can’t stand the term “anti-aging.” I turned 48 last month, which is dangerously close to 50. To be honest, I am unsure how I feel about these numbers. So it was, therefore, timely that we’re featuring the article “Aging with Passion and Purpose,” by Debora Shouse, in this month’s issue. After all, shouldn’t that be our goal? Shouldn’t we stop fighting aging with Botox and liposuction and instead have the guts and character to embrace it with passion and purpose? Perhaps the best advice in the article (spoiler alert) is when Dr. Bill Thomas points out that “once you appreciate yourself and your years, you can relinquish outdated expectations and seek to discover your true self.” WOW! Well put. Do you appreciate yourself? My gut says you don’t. And because you don’t, age only seems to bring more stress, weight gain, disappointment, and, worse, lipo and Botox! Try this exercise that’s in my new book, A Year of Inspired Living (shameless plug, amzn.to/2spoepK). Sit yourself down with a pen and a piece of paper and ask yourself, “What do I appreciate about myself and my years?” Then just write, freeform. You are going to be amazed at what shows up. It’s a good idea to tack this list up somewhere easily visible. Remember how you got to where you are now—with hard work, determination and a belief in yourself. Remember your amazing and unique qualities, appreciate yourself, and then demand that others do the same. Anti-aging is bulls**t! Aging with purpose—that is the key. What is your purpose in your second act? Shouse offers plenty of ideas to help us age with passion and purpose, but perhaps the most important is her advice to “fill the funnel with friends.” I think this is essential; the value of friendship is immeasurable. You must make time for friends; they will be critical supporting characters in your second act. If you find that your friend group has diminished over the years, then it is imperative you fill that void. I recognize that it’s not as easy as it sounds. Making friends in grammar school was a piece of cake since we didn’t come with the baggage of opinions and self-doubt. We also had access to other children for eight hours a day five days a week. The truth is nothing worth having comes easy (hello six-pack abs!); however, social media can help you start connecting with old friends. Reconnect and suggest a meetup for coffee. Speaking of meetups, there are a ton of Long Island meetup groups to join based on similar interests. Book clubs are another great way to meet people. Looking for more ideas? Sign up for a dating site, like NASingles. com or OurTime.com. Recently, one of our staff members joined OurTime and shared how much she is enjoying dating and meeting people. While they have not all been “love connections,” she is out there building new relationships with the supporting characters for the second act. Don’t wait. I recommend you begin creating a blueprint for the second half of your life, because, like Thomas points out in the article, “The best chapters may be near the end of the book.”

risten and Kimberly Chin, known as @ChinTwins, of Chinese and Irish descent, started modeling at a young age working for magazines such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Allure and Elle, as well as fashion houses such as Yohji Yamamoto, Kenzo, Gaultier, Armani, Valentino and Gucci. As youngsters, both shared a love for yoga and dance, which gave them the grace and poise that was instrumental to their success in the fashion industry. Both certified RYT-200 yoga instructors in their 40s now, these mothers, wives and sisters are in the best shape of their lives. The creation of their joint Instagram account in 2014 has grown through a worldwide community of followers that tune in to the ChinTwins for inspirational messages for mind, body and soul. Now living more than a 1,000 miles apart— Kimmy in coastal Alabama and Crissy in New York—their lives remain intertwined as they emulate each other and continue to share their stories, motivating and helping like-minded people to think and move outside the box. This month, the nonprofit jewelry brand Senhoa (Senhoa.org), is launching a jewelry collection designed by Cristen and Kimberly. Proceeds from the Clarity Collection will provide safe employment to survivors of human trafficking in Cambodia. For the cover, the twins were photographed by Cristen’s husband, Nigel Barker, a noted fashion photographer, author, filmmaker and former model himself. He is best known as a photographer and judge on the reality show America’s Next Top Model, and also hosted another show, The Face. 8

Thyroid Meds: Not Feeling Quite as Good as You Thought You Would?

The hallmark medications, like leof Hashimoto’s is the autoimvothyroxine, Synthroid, and mune process, and not the sometimes supposedly natural slowing of the thyroid. In Hashimoto’s, however, thyroiditis, an autoimmune disease that either our TG bus or TP enzyme, or accounts for about 70 percent of all hy- both, is/are destroyed by our body’s pothyroid issues. Chances are this is the confused and hyperactive immune real diagnosis you have if you have hysystem. That’s the story. As you see,

nowhere do I describe a slow thyroid or any other such myth. What would happen if your thyroid was pumping out T4 because your body is screaming that your metabolism is low, but there are no buses coming to transfer it to the liver? There would be excess T4 sitting in the thyroid but not the blood. What do you think happens if there was a pile of T4 in your thyroid? A vat of T4 would be called a nodule or a cyst. These are the realities of what Hashimoto’s does to the body. In order to truly help heal this situation, we must understand what is happening. For those interested in reversing and healing Hashimoto’s, a systematic approach of healing all the areas involved is necessary. Healing the gut, restoring and detoxifying the liver, unclogging the lymphatic system, balancing all the hormone systems of the body, and ridding the entire body of inflammation are some of the most important steps in healing Hashimoto’s. Appropriate treatments are necessary, such as acupuncture, dietary modification, and passive detox, to speed up and more deeply heal the body. There are really great and effective strategies to reversing Hashimoto’s and attaining high energy, losing weight naturally, and living life to its fullest. MonaLisa Touch: A Painless, Safe F Treatment for Vaginal Discomfort and Estrogen Deficiency

M

onaLisa Touch is a revolutionary treatment for women experiencing symptoms of menopause, or any other changes or conditions that may result in a decline in estrogen. This very natural change can be frustrating for women, and put a damper on their sexual vitality and overall mood. Some of the changes a woman might experience are vaginal dryness, itching, burning, painful sexual intercourse and urinary incontinence—all of which can be embarrassing, upsetting or both. Typically, estrogen creams are the go-to solution, but they can be messy, costly, time-consuming, and can even have adverse reactions. Women that have a history of certain cancers are not permitted to use these creams, and therefore have not had an ideal solution to their conditions until now. MonaLisa Touch is a C02 fractional laser that can relieve some of the most common side effects of estrogen deficiency. The noninvasive in-office treatment—performed by Dr. Gary Kasten, a boardcertified physician—uses technology similar to that of aesthetic lasers but is designed to encourage new collagen production in the vaginal walls. As the cells are revitalized, natural gynecologic functions can be restored. The noninvasive five-minute procedure does not cause any pain or inconvenient side effects, does not require anesthesia, and can produce successful results in just two to three treatments. The symptoms of estrogen deficiency can be devastating for women, but they do not have to signify the end of a chapter in their lives. The avoidance of sexual activity is very common among women going through these transformations, and it can be emotionally distressing for both the woman and her partner. MonaLisa Touch can restore vaginal health and comfort quickly, simply and safely. Source: Dr. Gary S. Kasten, DO, FACOG. For a complimentary phone consultation, call the office of Kasten at 631-244-2442. Office location: 1223B Montauk Hwy., in Oakdale. For more information, visit GaryKasten.com. See ad on page 23.

or those with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), strength training, lowimpact aerobic exercises and stretching can help build muscle; prevent stiff joints; improve endurance; and benefit the heart, bones and mood. A few examples of exercises include: Yoga Who it’s good for: Almost everyone can benefit, even people with tender, swollen joints. Yoga offers two great benefits for those living with RA. Yoga and other deep-relaxation techniques will help reduce joint inflammation while promoting a healthy immune system. Another perk is that gentle stretching is a great way to maintain movement and mobility. Pilates Who it’s good for: RA patients that want stronger muscles. Pilates strengthens muscles and stabilizes joints. The “shoulder bridge” is a good place to start, and is done by lying on your back with knees bent and arms along each side of your body. Contract the abdominals and lift the pelvis as you exhale through pursed lips. Be careful not to arch your back or over flex your knees. Inhale through the nose and hold the position. Exhale to lower your pelvis back to the ground, and repeat the exercise. Tai Chi Who it’s good for: People looking for a low-impact exercise. Sun-style (pronounced SOON-style) tai chi reduces pain, improves mobility and strengthens the body through slow movements. In general, don’t practice tai chi longer than the amount of time you can walk comfortably. Golden Mercury-Free Dentistry, Part 2

P

ro-amalgam dentists would have us believe that the mere strength of silver or amalgam fillings should outweigh all the harmful effects of mercury, which may be released in these fillings. Thus, they make no effort in working in a mercury-safe environment and continue to use mercury in dental fillings. Other dentists try to keep a mercury-free environment by not using amalgam fillings in dental restorations. However, this alone is not enough in protecting the patient and all others present in the dental surgery from mercury. The ideal mercury-free dental surgery has no mercury or amalgam at all. When a mercury-free dentist is tasked to remove old amalgam fillings in some patients, stringent measures are employed to ensure the safety of the procedure. To begin with, a mercury-free dental surgery should be equipped with an air purification system, which removes all mercury fumes released during the removal process. This would protect staff of the dental clinic as well as other patients present in the surgery. The patient and the dental staff performing the procedure may also be given alternate sources of air, such as oxygen masks, to prevent inhalation of mercury fumes. During the procedure, a rubber dam should be securely placed around the teeth involved to prevent swallowing of harmful amalgam particles. Again, a high-volume suction evacuator should be used in the process to quickly remove all particles and fumes emanating from the amalgam filling. High amounts of heat are generated during removal of amalgam fillings, and not only does this heat release more mercury fumes but, in extreme cases, it also causes pulpal death of the tooth involved. While drilling into these fillings, the mercury-free dentist therefore ensures that the amalgam filling and the drilling bur are cooled with a constant stream of water. Mercury-free dentists also believe in removing old amalgam fillings in chunks. This allows for removal of whole portions of the fillings to significantly reduce the release of mercury. Throughout the process, the mercury-free dentist considers the safety of the patients and all others present. This makes the somewhat dreadful thought of amalgam replacement a safe and necessary part of routine dental practice. We are pleased that these steps are ardently adhered to at Golden Dental Wellness Center, and we continuously seek to provide the best care for our patients.

I

t’s hard to ignore the media these days and not connect how important nutrition is to overall health and wellness. Nutrition is especially important in the way we feel and how our bodies deal with infections. Lack of certain nutrients can significantly impact many of the processes that our bodies utilizes in order to fight off bacterial infections. Periodontal inflammatory disease is caused by uncontrolled infection that goes untreated, causing an immune response by the body. Lack of vitamin D, for example, can constitute a higher risk of tooth attachment loss in patients with periodontal disease. Vitamin D has anti-microbial properties that can diminish the amount of bacteria in the mouth. Tooth loss associated with periodontal inflammatory disease can ultimately affect the dietary quality and nutrient intake. Poor nutrient intake can increase the risk for systemic diseases. Poor nutrition is also caused by dietary decisions we make. Unhealthy eating can lead to other oral problems, Jonathan Richter, DDS such as dental caries, also caused by bacterial infection. Sugars are a primary factor involved in developing dental caries. Consumption of processed sugars allows for bacteria present in the oral cavity to feed and produce an acidic byproduct, which lowers the pH. This acidic environment contributes to the demineralization of the tooth enamel. This destructive effect is caused by the consumption of sodas, juices, energy drinks, and many other products loaded with unhealthy sugars. What can you do to help prevent inflammation? Having good dental hygiene habits and consuming a well-balanced diet is best when trying to maintain a healthy mouth. However, the best way to avoid inflammation on a cellular level is to have a diet containing foods that have anti-inflammatory properties. High fiber content found in fruits, legumes, vegetables and seeds provides the body with vitamin C and E, beta-carotene, and good digestive enzymes. Omega-3 fatty acids found in foods such as fish are essential in combating their inflammatory counterpart, omega-6 fatty acids. Antioxidants found in herbs and spices, such as basil, mint, curry, cilantro and turmeric, are believed to be as effective as hydrocortisone in fighting inflammation. The Role of Nutrition on Your Oral Health

A

study from Nagasaki University, in Japan, has found that reducing salt in the diet can cut down on the number of trips to the bathroom during the night. Researchers followed 321 men and women with high-salt diets and sleep problems for 12 weeks. Of the subjects, 223 reduced their salt intake from 10.7 grams per day to 8 grams and the remaining 98 increased their salt intake from 9.6 grams per day to 11 grams. The nighttime urination frequency rate for the salt reduction group dropped from 2.3 times per night to 1.4 times, while the increased salt group’s rose from 2.3 to 2.7 times per night.

Yoga Eases Eating Disorders

CandyBox Images/Shutterstock.com

R

esearchers from Brown University, in Providence, Rhode Island, have found that regular yoga practice can help reduce anxiety and depression in young women with eating disorders. The scientists followed 20 girls between the ages of 14 and 18 that were enrolled in an outpatient eating disorder clinic that comprised the larger control group. Those selected agreed to participate in a weekly yoga class and complete questionnaires after six and 12 weeks, assessing their anxiety, depression and mood. Of those that started the study, five attended all 12 yoga classes and six completed between seven and 11 classes. Researchers found decreases in anxiety, depression and negative thoughts among those that participated in the yoga classes, with no negative side effects. Another study from the University of Delaware, in Newark, supports these results. Half of the 38 residential eating disorder treatment program participants did one hour of yoga prior to dinner for five days and the other half did not. The yoga group showed significant reductions in pre-meal anxiety compared to the control group.

Tonsillectomies Help Only Temporarily

R

esearchers from Vanderbilt University Medical Center, in Nashville, Tennessee, examined the effectiveness of tonsillectomies in children with recurring throat infections. Using data from nearly 10,000 studies of tonsillectomies, the scientists analyzed illness rates and quality of life for young patients following the surgery. The analysis found that children experienced a notable drop in school absences and infections in the first year after the surgery, but that these benefits did not persist over time. Dr. Siva Chinnadurai, an associate professor of otolaryngology and co-author of the report, believes, “For any child being considered a candidate for surgery, the family must have a personalized discussion with their healthcare provider about all of the factors that may be in play and how tonsils fit in as one overall factor of that child’s health.”

Meditation and Music Aid Memory in Early Stages of Alzheimer’s

A

new study from West Virginia University, in Morgantown, reveals that listening to music and practicing meditation may help improve memory function for those in the beginning stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers asked 60 adults experiencing subjective cognitive decline (SCD), a common predictor of Alzheimer’s, to engage in kirtan kriya musical meditation or listen to other music for 12 minutes a day for three months, and then consider continuing for an additional three months. Scientists measured the memory and cognitive function of the 53 participants that completed the six-month study and found significant improvements in both measurements at the three-month mark. At six months, the subjects in both groups had maintained or improved upon their initial results.

fter 25 years’ experience in medical practice and research, Dr. Hannah Hershoff decided to leave her lucrative medical doctor career to create healing jewelry. A phone chat with a cousin who took a trip from China totally changed Dr. Hannah’s life. Dr. Hannah learned that the mystical stones from a remote area of Southeast China near her hometown have incredible spiritual healing properties. After extensive research, Dr. Hannah learned that the five natural elements in the stones had served several dynasties of Emperors over thousands of years. This information excited Dr. Hannah enormously and motivated her to test the spiritual healing effects of the stones. A few weeks after wearing Dr. Hannah’s bracelets, three out of four individuals reported they gained confidence, improved their self-image, sensed more connections to loved ones, and experienced a reduction in anxiety. This dramatic positive feedback encouraged Dr. Hannah to leave her medical career and work full time on Sara Yo healing jewelry. Dr. Hannah says, “I am so glad I have made this career change decision, as I truly believe in the power of spiritual healing. businessspotlight Energetic Skin Care:

Awaken Your Inner Beauty by Michele Horan

R

evite’ Skincare, in Syosset, takes a “holistic” approach to renewing and rejuvenating the skin/body by the balancing of vital energy utilizing a product line that is based upon Traditional Chinese Medicine and the five element theory. The skin is the largest organ of the body and always offers a telltale sign of what’s going on inside the body as well. Any type of energetic imbalance or blockage in the flow of energy, or “chi,” will reflect externally through manifestations on the face and body. The proper flow of energy is essential for health and vitality. Locating and identifying blockages is the foundation of “energetic skin care,” which is the form of skin care offered at Revite’; it is designed to restore and maintain the body’s holistic balance with nature by transforming with the seasons.

The skin will tell a story of what’s happening on the outside, the inside, and even in your inner soul. Take, for example, mature skin that is showing signs of aging, dehydration, lack of tone, fine lines and wrinkles—Revite’ would treat these issues by using the “water element” as the base of a threestep skin program. Women experiencing menopause and hot flashes want to calm and cool the body by using the “fire element.” Inflammatory conditions, such as psoriasis and eczema, are also directly related to an energetic imbalance of the fire element. Skin experiencing excess oil, blackheads and brown staining is thought to be due to a lack in flow of vital energy circulation. The three-step program for the “wood element” would be recommended. All skin conditions manifest due to an imbalance of one or more of the five elements. The ingredients of the Revite’ product line are all plant-based, including plant extracts, essential oils, minerals, antioxidants, algae and clay masks. They are the same elements Mother Earth provides for trees, flowers and

plants, which grow with beauty and abundance and “become” more beautiful with age. What is it that we can learn from the “Tree of Life”? What is the tree doing that we aren’t? The tree remains connected to its source from the beginning. It feeds off Mother Earth and the elements of the Earth, and becomes self-sustaining and all knowing. The external supply is automatic. Compare a 100-year-old tree to a 100-year-old human being. Who looks better? The tree outlives us, outgrows us, and “out knows” us! It’s time to begin a “new way” and reattach our broken branch back to feeding off Mother Earth and the natural elements. Revite’ Skincare can offer you the key to open the door and start you back on the path to healing and transformation. Beauty will change your selfesteem, and empower you to live with passion and purpose. It offers connection to your self, society, community, and in turn, ripples into the world. It starts one person at a time. Achieving a mind/body/soul connection is the key to optimal health, wellness and vitality. Aging with Passion and Purpose Finding Fulfillment, Creativity and Meaning by Deborah Shouse

W

ant to age well? The answer isn’t in your 401k. Self-acceptance, a positive attitude, creative expression, purposeful living and spiritual connections all anchor successful and meaningful aging. In fact, these kinds of preparations are just as important as saving money for retirement, according to Ron Pevny, director of the Center for Conscious Eldering, in Durango, Colorado, and author of Conscious Living, Conscious Aging.

Savor Self-Acceptance

While most people believe adulthood is the final stage of life, Dr. Bill Thomas is among the creative aging experts that identify another life chapter: elderhood. “Elders possess novel ways of approaching time, money, faith and relationships,” says Thomas, an Ithaca, New York geriatrician and fierce advocate for the value of aging. “The best chapters may be near the end of the book,” Thomas continues. “Once you appreciate yourself and your years, you can relinquish outdated expectations and seek to discover your true self. Then the world can open up to you,” says Thomas. “Living a rewarding life means we are willing to say, ‘These chapters now are the most interesting.’” During this time, rather than feeling consumed by what we have to do, we can focus on what we want to do. 24

Fill the Funnel of Friends

For older people, relationships offer foundational connections; but as we age, friends may drift away, relocate or die. “Successful aging requires refilling our funnel of friends,” says Thomas, who considers socially engaged elders with friends wealthier than a socially isolated millionaire. “Notice opportunities for interacting and connecting,” advises Shae Hadden, co-founder of The Eldering Institute in Vancouver, Canada. Talk with the checkout person at the grocery store or smile at a stranger walking her dog.

Cultivate a Positive Attitude

Our beliefs about aging shape our experiences. A Yale University study found that older individuals with more positive self-perceptions of aging lived 7.5 years longer than those less so inclined. Connecting with positive role models helps us release limiting beliefs and embrace an attitude of gratitude instead. Other life lessons can be gleaned from observing how negativity affects people physically, emotionally, and socially. Holding onto regrets traps us in the past zapping energy and self-worth; it also keeps the best in us from shining out says Pevny. He suggests a simple letting-go ceremony, with friends as witnesses. If possible, hold it in a natural outdoor setting.

www.NaturalAwakeningsLI.com

EdBockStock/Shutterstock.com

At one of his conscious aging retreats, Pevny created a fire circle. Mike, 70, had been a dedicated long-distance runner for most of his life. Now plagued with mobility issues, Mike decided to let go of regrets. He brought a pair of running shorts into the circle and talked about what the sport had meant to him— its joys, challenges and camaraderie. Then he tossed the shorts into the fire, telling his friends, “I am letting go so I can find a new purpose and passion.”

Understand Our Life Stories

Creating our own life review helps us acknowledge and understand our most significant experiences and reminds us of all we’re bringing to our elder journey. Pevny offers these approaches: n Develop a timeline, dividing life into seven-year sections. For each, write about the strongest memories and most influential people. n Consider what matters most, from people and values to challenges and dreams. n Write to children and grandchildren, sharing tales of our life’s most significant events and lessons. n Record key stories on audio or video.

Explore the Arts

The changes that aging brings can mire elders in depression and isolation. “Older people need to be brave and resilient,” says Susan Perlstein, of Brooklyn, New York, founder emeritus of the National Center for Creative Aging, in Washington, D.C., and founder of Elders Share the Arts, in New York City. “To age creatively, we need a flow of varied experiences, exploring new activities or reframing longtime interests from a fresh perspective.” Expressive arts can engage people’s minds, bodies and spirits. A George Washington University study shows that people engaged in the arts are happier and healthier. Perlstein understands this firsthand, having begun taking guitar lessons in her 70s. Motivated to play simple songs for her new granddaughter, she subsequently learned to play jazz and blues tunes and joined a band. “I’m doing something I love,” says Perlstein. “I’m meeting diverse people, learning new things and enjoying a rich life.”

The answers can lead to fresh settings, including local community centers and places of worship. Many universities have extension classes for lifelong learners. State arts councils support programs, and museums and libraries host helpful activities. Shepherd Centers encourage community learning and Road Scholar caters to elders that prefer to travel and study.

Discover a Purpose Older people are our retirement some people feel purgreatest resource. We need Upon poseless and lost. They yearn for someto nurture them and give thing that offers up excitement, energy and joy. Hadden invites people to be them a chance to share curious and explore options. “We’re what they know. designing our future around who we are ~Susan Perlstein, founder, National Center for Creative Aging and Elders Share the Arts Musician John Blegen, of Kansas City, Missouri, was 73 when he realized his lifelong secret desire to tap dance. When Blegen met the then 87-year-old Billie Mahoney, Kansas City’s “Queen of Tap,” he blurted out his wish and fear of being “too old.” She just laughed and urged him to sign up for her adult beginner class. He asked for tap shoes for Christmas and happily shuffle-stepped his way through three class sessions. “Tap class inspired me, encouraged me and gave me hope,” he says. “Now I can shim sham and soft shoe. It’s a dream come true.” To unearth the inner artist, ask: n Which senses do I most like to engage? n Do I enjoy looking at art or listening to music? Do I like sharing feelings and experiences? If so, a thrill may come from writing stories or plays, acting or storytelling. n As a child, what did I yearn to do; maybe play the piano, paint or engineer a train set? Now is the time to turn those dreams into reality. n How can I reframe my life in a positive way when I can no longer do activities I love? If dancing was my focus before, how do I rechannel that energy and passion? If puttering in the garden is too strenuous, what other outdoor interests can I pursue?

and what we care about now,” she says. Try keeping a journal for several weeks. Jot down issues and ideas that intrigue, aggravate and haunt. After several weeks, reflect on the links between concerns that compel and those that irritate. Perhaps we’re intrigued by a certain group of people or a compelling issue. “A concern points to problems and people you want to help,” Hadden observes. This can range from lending a hand to struggling family members, maintaining our own health, volunteering for a literacy project or working to reduce world hunger. “Choose what inspires you to get out of bed each day, eager to move into action.”

Develop Inner Frontiers

People in their elder years may still be measured by midlife standards, which include physical power, productivity and achievement. “They come up short in the eyes of younger people,” dharma practitioner Kathleen Dowling Singh remarks. “But those standards do not define a human life.” Rather, aging allows us to disengage from the pressures of appearances and accomplishments. As we release judgments and unwanted habits, we can increase our feelings of spirituality and peace. “When doors in the outer world seem to be closing, it’s time to cultivate inner resources that offer us joy and meaning. We have the beautiful privilege of slowing down and hearing what our heart is saying,” says Singh, of Sarasota, Florida.

Acknowledge Our Shelf Life

“We cannot speak about aging and awakening without speaking about death and dying,” Singh believes. “We need to confront our mortality.” Meditating on the coming transition opens us up to the blessings of life. We can ask ourselves deep questions such as, “What am I doing? What do I want? What does this all mean? What is spirit?” Singh believes such searching questions are vital. None of us knows how much Earth time we have to awaken to a deeper, fuller experience of the sacred.

Help the World In today’s world of chaos and crisis, the wisdom of elders is more important than ever. “Older people need to be engaged, using their insights to help the Earth, community and world,” Pevny says. Creative aging is about improving the future for subsequent generations. In 2008, longtime educator Nora Ellen Richard, 70, of Overland Park, Kansas, wanted to be of greater service. She

Rewriting Your Genes: Why Proper Nutrition Can Save Your Life by Stephanie Jaworowski, MSACN

C

hronic diseases are on the rise, causing more and more deaths among Americans. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, heart disease, cancer, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease and diabetes are the leading causes of death for Americans. But what if we told you there is a way to prevent all of these conditions? You may be thinking, “But I have a family history of cancer, so I am doomed to have it too.” WRONG! Just because we have a genetic predisposition toward a certain disease, does not mean we will suffer from the same illness as that of our family members. In fact, by ensuring that we live a healthy lifestyle and provide our body with proper nutrition, we can prevent certain genes from turning on. Genetic changes are not only influenced during fetal development, but are influenced throughout a person’s lifetime through dietary and environmental factors. Each individual obtains their own subscript of genes from their parents. However, it does not mean that this is a life sentence. We have the abil-

ity to rewrite our story and live the life we want, not the one we were given. If caught early, genes have the ability to be reversed through therapeutic intervention—not only for an individual but for their future children as well. The Standard American Diet (SAD)—one high in meat, dairy, fat, sugar and refined, processed junk foods— has become our new normal. Unfortunately, this is the exact type of diet that can initiate a cascade of inflammation, leading to altered gene expression and chronic disease. Inflammatory foods include gluten, dairy, corn, soy, sugar, trans and saturated fat, processed foods, artificial sweeteners and additives, and fried foods. The more we consume these foods, the more our genetics are altered, leading to chronic disease. Inflammation has become one of our biggest issues. In fact, obesity, hypertension and Type 2 diabetes are all states of chronic inflammation. When our body is inflamed, we produce inflammatory markers that can alter human function, including how our body breaks down fat, stores glucose, and

how easily things are passed into and out of our cells. When these processes are altered, normal biochemical signals are influenced and begin to perform abnormal reactions. When we are in a state of chronic inflammation, these reactions occur day after day, having a lasting effect on our body. An increase in the production of inflammatory markers will cause immune inflammatory diseases, and this inflammation over time will turn into illnesses, such as heart disease, diabetes, thyroid disease and other autoimmune diseases. So, what does this mean? A prolonged inflammatory state can be a cause of age-related chronic conditions. Now that we know inflammation can lead to chronic diseases, it is important to decrease this inflammation through diet and proper lifestyle. As mentioned earlier, SAD is rich in processed and inflammatory foods. An anti-inflammatory diet—one mimicking a Mediterranean diet, which is high in olive oil, plant-based foods, legumes, fresh herbs and fish, and limited in red meat—will provide our body with a tremendous amount of vitamins, minerals and omega-3 fatty acids (the good, anti-inflammatory fat). This type of diet will have the opposite effect of SAD, and will keep our body in a healthy, noninflamed state. Regular physical activity is also key in reducing inflammation. Exercise has been shown to reduce the production of inflammatory markers, as well as assist in the control of blood sugar and fat levels. So, take control: eat well, exercise and rewrite your story! Rodney Yee on Yoga as a Way of Life

You can blink and half your life is gone. You can’t always be busy, busy, busy; you have to decide how to fill your life.

Simple Strategies for Staying on Track by Marlaina Donato

R

enowned yogi and international teacher Rodney Yee, of New York City, has maintained an inspired yoga practice for 37 years while juggling career obligations, fame and family life. While the benefits of yoga are increasingly well known—from stress reduction and pain management to a more limber body and inner peace—Yee is also aware of the challenges to maintaining a consistent practice. Here he shares insights on the pitfalls encountered by both beginning and advanced students. “My advice is to first get rid of self-berating behavior, including judgmental inner dialogue. In many aspects of life, we are constantly measuring ourselves against a standard, which is a waste of time and energy,” says Yee. With a professional background in classical dance and gymnastics, Yee decided to give yoga a try at a nearby studio when he craved more physical flexibility. “As many people do, I came to yoga for a reason. I was a dancer with tight joints. After the first class, I couldn’t believe how I felt. It was not at all like an athletic high; I had a sense of well-being and knew what it means to feel peaceful and clear.” For people with jam-packed lives, finding time for exercise can be daunting. Yee suggests a relaxed approach to scheduling yoga into a busy day. “As the rishis [Hindu sages] say, we shouldn’t ‘try’ to meditate, not try to force a natural state. To say, ‘I have to do yoga,’ just puts another thing on our to-do list. Sometimes discipline is needed, but another part of discipline is not about force.”

30

Long Island Edition

Different approaches to yoga abound, and part of staying motivated may include exploration of a variety of traditions as individual needs change due to lifestyle, health, interests or simple curiosity. Yee reminds us to go with the flow and follow how we feel in the moment. “Different schools of yoga exist because each offers something different. There is a form for all of our moods and a practice for how you feel at any given time.” Reflecting on how his own practice has evolved through the years, Yee recollects, “In my 20s and 30s, my yoga practice was arduous, including three to four hours of strong, physical work and a half hour of pranayama [breath work]. Then for 20 years, it involved a lot of teaching. Over the past 17 years, my practice has become more subtle, with a focus on sequencing and meditation; it’s about how to do this all day long in the context of my body and my life; about being both centered and in the world. In some way, we’re always doing yoga, as we already take 20,000 breaths a day. From a philosophical and ethical point of view, yogis have no choice but to practice.” Because many American women have found their way to a yogic path, men often assume it’s primarily a women’s niche. But yoga has been a male practice for nearly 2,500 years in other countries. Yee encourages men to not feel intimidated. “Why not try something that can help you improve your business, family life and even your golf game?” he queries. While Yee believes in a no-pressure approach, he also suggests inviting ways to foster consistency. “If you are just beginning, set aside a half-hour before going to bed or get up a half-hour earlier. Also note that pain is less to be avoided than learned from.” Wisdom can come from dedication to a yoga practice. Yee’s philosophy is, “You can blink and half your life is gone. You can’t always be busy, busy, busy; you have to decide how to fill your life. As spiritual teacher Ram Dass counsels, ‘Be here now.’ Train yourself to bring body, mind and heart together and fully drink from that.” Learn more at YeeYoga.com. CLARITY ABOUT

Coconut Oil by Pamela A. Popper, Ph.D., ND

C

oconut oil is represented as having almost magical properties. Some people claim that coconut oil is a cure for Alzheimer’s disease, hypothyroidism, cancer, and almost any and all health conditions. But are these claims true? The nutrient breakdown alone says that coconut oil is most likely not a health-promoting food. One tablespoon of coconut oil has 116 calories and 14 grams of fat, 12 grams of which are saturated fat. To put this in perspective, lard has only 5 grams of saturated fat per tablespoon. But many advocates of coconut oil say that the high saturated fat content does not matter, and increases in plasma cholesterol resulting from coconut oil intake do not matter either. They cite populations, such as the residents of Kitava and the Minangkabau of Indonesia, that eat a diet high in coconut oil and yet maintain excellent health. Let’s start with the approximately 2,500 residents of Kitava, many of whom are farmers. The Kitava diet is

concentrated in tubers (yams, sweet potatoes and taro), fruit, fish and coconut. They do not eat dairy products or processed foods, or drink alcohol, coffee or tea. The macronutrient makeup of the diet is 69 percent carbohydrate, 21 percent fat, and 10 percent protein. Not surprisingly, based on this diet, the Kitava have lower body mass index, lower blood pressure, lower overall cholesterol, and lower LDL cholesterol than people living in Westernized countries. Also not surprisingly, there is almost no heart disease in this population. The diet of the Minangkabau also includes coconut and coconut oil but is slightly different. The Minangkabau diet is concentrated in vegetables, rice, fruit, fish and coconut, and coconut is the primary source of fat in the diet. Beef and chicken are consumed on special occasions; pork is not eaten; and lamb, goat and wild game are rarely eaten. But the diet is much higher in fat (30.2 percent), and a significantly higher percentage of that fat is saturated fat. The Minangkabau have the highest rate of hypertension in Indonesia at 23.6 percent, and also the highest proportion

of overweight people at 36 percent. Apparently the high-fat eating and coconut oil intake are not working out so well for the Minangkabau. The bottom line is that the diets and health status of populations like these, which are frequently mentioned on websites promoting coconut oil, do not support the idea that people should include coconut oil in their diets, eat a high-fat diet, or be unconcerned about plasma cholesterol. Proponents say that coconut oil’s main saturated fat, lauric acid, has been shown in some studies to increase HDL levels. This is true. But increasing HDL levels has not been shown to make a positive difference in long-term health outcomes; in fact, studies have shown that drugs and supplements that increase HDL cholesterol do not improve health outcomes, and in some cases, worsen them. The effect of lauric acid on LDL cholesterol depends on which fat it replaces in the diet. If it replaces vegetable and polyunsaturated fats, it increases LDL; if it replaces butter, its effect is usually neutral. 5 Reasons You Should

DETOX YOUR BODY by Vanessa Galati-Drew

E

xhaustion, skin problems, body aches, digestive issues, weight gain— these are all signs that it may be time for a body detox. In today’s world, we are constantly being exposed to a multitude of toxins everywhere we go. Air pollution, food preservatives, carcinogens, medication overload, cleaning products, and even chemicals in the water we drink. Added up through time, these toxins can cause major health problems, lack of energy, irritability, sugar cravings, skin irritations, bags under the eyes, and lack of general well-being. 1. Get an Energy Boost By cutting out extra sugar, caffeine, trans fat, saturated fat, and replacing them with fresh fruits and vegetables, you’ll be getting a natural energy boost; one that comes without a resultant crash. An ionic foot detox can give you the boost of energy

you’ve been looking for. 2. Rid the Body of Any Excess Waste Cleansing the colon with colon hydrotherapy is an important part of the detoxing process because those toxins need to exit the body, and a backed up colon can cause them to be reintroduced into the body, rather than exiting as planned. Sticking with fruits and vegetables even after the detox program is completed is a good way to keep things moving. 3. Helps with Weight Loss Weight loss is made easier when the cells are optimized to break down fat. Heat is often a catalyst for breaking down fat in the body. Often boosting the body’s natural heat utilizing a FIT Bodywrap is important in a cleanse. The heat from a FIT Bodywrap actually breaks stored fat down and converts it

WE CAN HELP YOU REACH YOUR WELLNESS GOAL

4. Stronger Immune System A working lymphatic system balances the body’s fluids, absorbs fat into your system, and helps your body’s immunological defense. It’s important to keep it in tip-top shape. Bio-electric lymphatic drainage improves the entire circulation of the body. 5. Healthier Skin A detox will also improve your skin’s appearance. Far infrared heat therapy helps in a detox because it assists in clearing certain skin conditions, including acne, eczema, psoriasis, burns and any skin lesions or cuts. Detoxifying the body has been practiced for many centuries in many different cultures to relax, rejuvenate and replenish the body. When we eliminate these harmful toxins from our body and then nourish our body with whole healthy foods and nutrients, it renews our ability to maintain optimal wellness and prevent disease. FABULOUS FAN FARE Healthy Tailgating Foods to Cheer For by Judith Fertig

E

at, play, party… and repeat. We may call it tailgating, fangating, homegating, a watch party or simply eating with friends before a big game. According to the American Tailgaters Association, in St. Paul, Minnesota, an estimated 50 million Americans tailgate annually. Whether we’re on the road or at home, making the menu healthy is a winning strategy for hosts and guests. Here, two experts divulge their winning ways. Says Debbie Moose, author of Fan Fare: A Playbook of Great Recipes for Tailgating or Watching the Game

at Home, Ivy League schools like Princeton and Yale claim credit for pregame picnics that 19th-century sports fans packed into their horse and buggy for local road trips. Moose lives in the tailgate trifecta of the North Carolina triangle, home to Duke, North Carolina and Wake Forest universities. She enjoyed discovering that University of Washington sports fans from the Seattle area like to sail to their chosen picnic spots, while University of Hawaii folks grill fish on hibachis in Honolulu. Moose naturally prefers healthy, Southern-style fare such as deviled

eggs and marinated green bean salad, which can be served hot, cold or at room temperature. “At the game or at home, your guests will be moving around, so go for foods that can be eaten with one hand,” she suggests. She also plans her menu around color, universal appeal and variety because it’s healthier than just serving a mound of barbecued chicken wings and a big bowl of potato chips. She likes recipes that can do double duty; her black bean summer salad with cherry tomatoes and corn can function as a colorful side dish or as a salsa for nonGMO blue corn chips. “Recipes that you can do ahead of time make things easier on game day; just pull them from the fridge and go,” says Moose. Daina Falk, of New York City, grew up around professional athletes because her father, David Falk, is a well-known sports agent. Excitement-generating sports are in her blood and inspired her to write The Hungry Fan’s Game Day Cookbook. She knows that most of the tailgating in her area takes place for football and baseball games and NASCAR races. On HungryFan.com, Falk serves up tips for every fangating/homegating occasion, from the Kentucky Derby to the Super Bowl. “Keep your menu interesting,” says Falk. “I always like to feature a dish for each team. For instance, if you’re hosting an Alabama versus Washington watch party, you could feature an Alabama barbecue dish with white sauce and oysters or other fresh seafood. Both dishes are characteristic of the local foods in the universities’ respective hometowns.” Falk recommends buying more local beer than needed to make sure not to run out. Game day guests can get hot and thirsty, indoors or out. Supply lots of filtered water in non-breakable containers. For easy entertaining, Falk recommends biodegradable dishes and cups. “Whenever there are a lot of people in one room, especially when they’re drinking, a glass will likely be broken,” she says. “Save yourself cleanup and the risk of glass shards by committing to temporary cups and plates that are Earth-friendly and compostable.” Judith Fertig writes cookbooks and foodie fiction from Overland Park, KS (JudithFertig.com).

THE POWER OF FOOD TO

Fight Cancer by Joel Fuhrman, M.D.

I

f we implement the scientific information we now have at our fingertips, we can win the war on cancer. We are not powerless against cancer; it is not determined primarily by genetics or chance. The American Institute for Cancer Research estimates that 35 percent of all cancers are preventable through healthy lifestyle measures; I propose that we could prevent far more than 50 percent of cancers if Americans would embrace a nutrientdense, plant-rich diet. As I describe in my book Super Immunity, G-BOMBS (greens, beans, onions, mushrooms, berries and seeds) are the foods with the most powerful immuneboosting and anti-cancer effects. These foods help to prevent the cancerous transformation of normal cells, and keep the body ready to attack any precancerous or cancerous cells that may arise.

G – Greens

Cruciferous vegetable phytochemicals inhibit a wide range of cancer-promoting cellular processes, including angiogenesis; the angiogenesis inhibitors found in cruciferous vegetables prevent new blood vessel growth, which is needed for tumor growth. Eating cruciferous vegetables regularly is associated with decreased risk of breast, prostate and colorectal cancers.

B – Beans

Beans are unique because of their very high levels of fiber and resistant starch—carbohydrates not broken down 38

Long Island Edition

by digestive enzymes. Fiber and resistant starch reduce the total number of calories absorbed from beans, reduce cholesterol levels, and are metabolized by healthy gut bacteria, leading to protection from colon cancer; eating beans, peas or lentils at least twice a week has been said to be linked to a 50 percent drop in colon cancer risk. High bean intake is also associated with a decreased risk of esophageal, stomach, kidney and breast cancer.

O – Onions

Onions, leeks, garlic, shallots, chives and scallions not only lend great flavor to meals, these vegetables are known for their characteristic, eyeirritating organosulfur compounds, which help to prevent cancer. Eating onions and garlic frequently is associated with reduced risk of digestive cancers. These vegetables also contain high concentrations of anti-inflammatory flavonoid antioxidants that contribute to their anti-cancer properties.

M – Mushrooms

In one Chinese study, women that ate at least 10 grams of fresh mushrooms (about one button mushroom) each day had a 64 percent decrease in breast cancer risk. Phytochemicals from many types of mushrooms have shown anti-cancer effects against www.NaturalAwakeningsLI.com

stomach, colorectal and prostate cancer as well. Plus, white, cremini and Portobello mushrooms are unique in that they contain aromatase inhibitors—compounds that reduce the production of estrogen and are thought to protect against breast cancer. Keep in mind that mushrooms should only be eaten cooked: Several raw mushrooms contain a potentially carcinogenic substance called agaritine, and cooking reduces agaritine content.

B – Berries (and pomegranate)

Berries’ plentiful antioxidant content helps to reduce blood pressure and inflammation, prevent DNA damage that leads to cancer, protect the brain against oxidative damage, and stimulate the body’s own antioxidant enzymes. Berries and pomegranate are antiangiogenic foods, and have anti-inflammatory effects that may protect against cancer and other chronic diseases. Pomegranate (similar to mushrooms) is one of the few foods that contain natural aromatase inhibitors—substances that inhibit estrogen production, which may reduce breast cancer risk.

S – Seeds

Countless studies have demonstrated the cardiovascular benefits of nuts. Seeds and nuts are also a helpful food for weight loss. Some seeds—flax, chia and sesame, in particular—are rich in lignans, plant estrogens that protect against breast cancer; in one fascinating study, women were given flaxseeds daily after being diagnosed with breast cancer, and reduced growth and increased death of their tumor cells was found after just four to five weeks.

Build a strong nutritional foundation: Base your diet on nutrient-rich plant foods.

Plant phytochemicals work synergistically to boost immune function and prevent cancer from developing. There is an additional perk too: These same foods protect against heart disease, diabetes,

per; spelt is higher in zinc; rye is higher in potassium; wheat is higher in magnesium; and wheat and oats are higher in iron. Eat a variety of whole grains to ensure maximum benefits.

THE GRAIN BREAKDOWN by Brenda Davis, RD

W

hole grains (also called cereals) are small, hard, dry seeds that grow on grass-like plants. They are staples for most populations around the world. The most widely consumed grains are wheat, rice and corn (botanically, corn is a grain, but from a culinary sense, it tends to be used as a starchy vegetable). Other popular grains are barley, rye, oats, kamut, spelt and millet. Pseudograins, such as amaranth, buckwheat, quinoa and wild rice, are similar to grains in both their nutrition and culinary uses, but they are not in the same botanical family. Are whole grains healthy foods? Absolutely. Whole grains provide about half of the world’s protein and fiber. They are rich sources of B vitamins (especially thiamin and niacin) and vitamin

E. They are also good sources of minerals, including manganese, selenium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, zinc and copper. Whole grains contain a variety of phytochemicals and antioxidants. Are some whole grains healthier than others? Yes, there are several considerations when trying to select the healthiest whole grains: 1. Type of grain. Like all foods, there are variations in the nutritional value of different grains. Pseudograins tend to be slightly higher in protein and minerals than true grains. Of the true grains, oats, wheat, kamut and spelt are the richest in protein. Whole grain rice is higher in vitamin E than most other grains; kamut is higher in selenium; oats are higher in manganese and cop-

2. Color of grain. The more colorful whole grains generally contain more antioxidants and phytochemicals. For example, red or black quinoa or rice contain more phytochemicals than beige quinoa or brown rice. 3. Processing of grain. We use whole grains to make many popular food products, such as bread, pasta, readyto-eat breakfast cereals, crackers, cookies and snack foods. Generally, the more heavily processed the grain, the lower the nutritional value and the higher the glycemic index (a measure of how much a food affects your blood sugar after eating). The most nutritious whole grains are called “intact whole grains (e.g., barley; kamut; spelt and wheat berries; quinoa; wild rice; brown, red or black rice; buckwheat, etc.). Sprouting these grains further increases nutrients and phytochemicals, reduces anti-nutrients and releases stored forms of nutrients. Cut grains (e.g., steel-cut oats, 12-grain cereals, bulgur, etc.) are also healthful choices, as they are minimally processed and generally contain no additives, such as sugar, fat and salt. Rolled grains (rolled oats, rolled barley, etc.) are also nutritious but are more quickly absorbed into the bloodstream than intact or cut grains. Shredded grains are also acceptable choices. Ground grains (e.g., whole-wheat flour, oat flour, etc.) should be used less often and in moderate amounts, as foods made with flours tend to contain more additives and are much more quickly absorbed. Flaked and puffed whole grains are more heavily processed and are best minimized. The whole-grain hierarchy below summarizes the least-to-most healthful whole grains. The Whole-Grain Hierarchy Intact Whole Grains (e.g., quinoa, barley) Cut Whole Grains (e.g., steel-cut oats) Rolled Whole Grains (e.g., rolled oats)

Shredded Whole Grains (e.g., shredded wheat) Ground Whole Grains (e.g., whole-wheat flour) Flaked Whole Grains (e.g., kamut flakes) Puffed Whole Grains (e.g., puffed wheat) Frequently Asked Questions Why are refined grains less healthful? When grains are refined, most of the fiber, vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals are lost. For example, when we turn wheat into white flour, we lose about 80 to 90 percent of the fiber, 70 to 80 percent of the vitamins and minerals, and 90 percent of the phytochemicals. For optimal health, we want to avoid or minimize the use of refined grains (e.g., white flour, white rice, couscous, white pasta, etc.). What type of bread is most healthful? Bread is a very popular food around the world. Sprouted breads (bread made from sprouted grains and dehydrated or cooked at a low temperature), such as manna breads, are an excellent choice. Breads made from sprouted grain flours are preferable to regular flour breads but still can be quite light and fluffy. Generally, the denser the bread, the more slowly it is absorbed, and the more healthful it is. Breads containing intact grains, nuts and seeds are better choices. Very heavy breads (e.g., breads you can practically stand on) are best. Sourdough bread is less likely to cause food intolerance, and despite its significant carbohydrate content, sourdough bread is considered a low-glycemic-index food; it will likely cause a gradual increase in blood sugar levels rather than a spike. Fluoride Alert Excess in Food and Tap Water Harms Pets by Karen Becker

I

n 2009, an Environmental Working Group (EWG) study found that bone meal and animal byproducts in eight of 10 major national dog food brands contain fluoride in amounts between 1.6 and 2.5 times higher than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommended maximum dose in drinking water. Some fluoride from tap water used in the manufacturing of pet food contributes to this. Olga Naidenko, Ph.D., lead researcher of the study, remarks, “A failed regulatory system and suspect practices by some in the pet food industry puts countless dogs at risk of ingesting excessive fluoride.” Fluoride occurs naturally in rocks, soil and thus some food plants and water supplies. More enters food via use of fluoride-based pesticides and commercial processing facilities. The EWG advises that two-thirds of all Americans, along with pets and farm animals, are exposed to artificially fluoridated tap water.

Fluoride Dangers to Humans While fluoride exposure hasn’t been studied in dogs or cats, according to 42

Dr. Joseph Mercola, ample research points to the dangers of fluoride to human health, including: n Arthritis n Bone cancer (osteosarcoma) n Bone fractures n Brain damage and lowered IQ n Damaged sperm and increased infertility n Deactivation of 62 enzymes n Dementia n Disrupted immune system n Disrupted synthesis of collagen n Genetic damage and cell death n Hyperactivity and/or lethargy n Impaired sleep (inhibits melatonin produced by the pineal gland) n Increased lead absorption n Increased tumor and cancer rate n Inhibited formation of antibodies n Lowered thyroid function n Muscle disorders

significantly higher probability for bone cancer than humans, with more than 8,000 cases diagnosed each year in the U.S., compared with about 900 human cases. According to the EWG, a dog drinking normal amounts of tap water would be exposed to 0.05 to 0.1 milligram (mg) of fluoride per kilogram (kg) of body weight daily. A 10-pound puppy that daily eats about a cup of dog food would ingest approximately 0.25 mg fluoride per kg body weight a day, based on average fluoride content in the eight contaminated brands it tested. Altogether, the puppy could be exposed to 3.5 times more fluoride than the EPA allows in drinking water. Large breed puppies may be exposed to even more fluoride due to higher water intake. Whatever the size and the appetite of a dog, combined fluoride exposure from food and water can easily become unsafe. Eating the same food every day, they may be constantly consuming more fluoride than is healthy for normal growth, leading to health problems and higher veterinary bills later in life.

Prevent High Ingestion of Fluoride

The EWG recommends owners purchase pet foods free of bone meal and other meals made from animal byproducts. It also suggests that government set fluoride limits in pet food that protect both puppies and large breeds most at risk for bone cancer. Dr. Michael W. Fox, an interna-

Fluoride-Free Feeding Tips n In homemade food preparation, avoid Teflon-coated pans, which may increase the fluoride levels in food. n Avoid cooking with fluoridated water, which concentrates fluoride in the food. n Avoid toothpaste or oral rinses intended for humans, to brush canine teeth. tionally recognized veterinarian and former vice president of the Humane Society of the United States and Humane Society International, recommends providing pets with fluoride-free water; spring water or reverse osmosis filtered water also works well. In preparing homemade food for a pet, make sure any added bone meal is free of fluoride and lead. Ethical bone meal producers will test for these contaminants; verify with the source. Fox suggests a good bone meal substitute might be fossilized oyster shell, dolomite or a synthesized or refined calcium supplement like calcium citrate, ascorbate, stearate or gluconate. Or, consider a pure tricalcium and dicalcium phosphate, blended with magnesium. Fox attests that bones from longer-lived food animals such as dairy cows, laying hens and breeding stock likely contain higher levels of fluoride than shorter-lived animals like chickens, calves and lambs. In his article “Fluoride in Pet Food: A Serious Health Risk for Both Dogs and Cats? he writes: “Fluorides accumulate in farmed animals over time from phosphate fertilizers, phosphate supplements, bone meal and fish meal supplements and pesticide and industrial-pollution-contaminated pastures and animal feed. The bones, fins, gills and scales of fish are often high in fluoride. He recommends raw food diets that avoid ground bone from older animals like beef cattle and adult sheep. SolarCity, is marketing tempered glass photovoltaic shingles that integrate with tile roofing materials to make the installation nearly undetectable. Tesla claims they’re three times as strong as standard roof shingles and guarantees them for the life of the house.

SOLAR HEATS UP Demand Surges as Prices Fall

N

ow is a good time to buy a solar system and get off the grid. Solar photovoltaic prices have fallen 67 percent in the last five years, reports Alexandra Hobson with the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA). It’s a boom period for solar—a record 14.8 gigawatts were installed last year in the U.S. Solar represented 39 percent of all new electric capacity added to the grid in 2016, surpassing natural gas (29 percent) and wind (26 percent). In the first quarter of this year, solar and wind together comprised more than half of all new U.S. power generation. The Solar Investment Tax Credit was extended for five years at the end of 2015, so homeowners and businesses can qualify to deduct 30 percent of the installed cost from their federal taxes. Also, there’s no upper limit on the prices for the qualifying panels. There are 1.3 million solar systems in the U.S. now, with a new one added every 84 seconds. Some 260,000 people currently work in the industry, double the figure of 2012. California is the leader in installed capacity, followed by North Carolina, Arizona, Nevada, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Utah. In 2016, the average residential solar system produced seven kilowatts, at an

average installed cost of $3.06 per watt, according to Hobson. A system costing just over $21,000 before taking the income tax credit yields a final net cost of $15,000. “It’s a perfect marriage for residential customers,” says Bill Ellard, an energy economist with the American Solar Energy Society (ASES). “The systems will produce electricity for about five cents per kilowatt-hour year-round compared to the average electric price of 10.34 cents per kilowatt hour tracked in March 2017.” New solar panel designs coming online mean even greater savings. Panels with built-in micro-inverters are cutting home installation costs for large central units (although their long-term, all-weather durability isn’t clear yet). A breakthrough at Japan’s Kobe University means single solar cells could achieve 50 percent efficiency, up from the 30 percent formerly accepted as the upper limit. Ugly panel frames may also be a thing of the past. More aesthetically pleasing frameless panels are expected this year from big players like SolarWorld, Canadian Solar and Trina Solar, with adapted mounting hardware. Producers like Prism Solar and DSM Advanced Surfaces are also working on frameless clear panels, with cells bound between panes of glass. These attractive clear panels are highly resistant to fire and corrosion. Tesla, which recently acquired

Solar Works for Many Now

For an average household electric load of 600 kilowatt-hours per month, for example, a daily dose of five hours of direct sunlight and four-kilowatt system will likely meet demand. For households with higher usage, especially in the South and West, bigger installations are the norm. “Solar system sizes have been growing fairly steadily as the price has come down,” Hobson notes. Thanks to Google Earth, solar installers usually know if a property has the right conditions; avoiding the fee for an onsite inspection. Houses with a southern orientation within 40 degrees of direct southern exposure are golden. Those with flat roofs work well because the panels can be tilted for maximum effect. Adjustable panels can also be adapted to the best angle per season. Panels can’t be in shade for a significant part of the day. Rooftop installers can work around vent pipes, skylights and chimneys. If major obstructions are a problem, ASES suggests a ground-mounted array or solar pergola, a freestanding wooden frame to mount panels. Solar systems heat swimming pools, too, offering huge operational savings over conventional heaters. They start at around $3,500 and average $5,500, compared to an average $2,664 for a fossil-fuel heater, reports HomeAdvisor.com. Determine if a state has net metering laws, which make it easy to sell excess power from a whole-home system back to the grid. Check for local tax subsidies on top of the federal 30 percent. The beauty of solar is that once the system is in place, operating costs are negligible. The lifespan of today’s panels is two decades and the payback is just two to three years. THE PATH TO HEALTHY LIVING STARTS WITH YOUR MOUTH

A DENTAL WELLNESS CENTER

ANATOMY OF A DENTAL IMPLANT What is a dental implant? A dental implant is a permanent solution to missing teeth. It is designed to substitute the root of a missing tooth acting as anchor for a new crown or set of replacement teeth. The placement of an implant occurs in three stages: Stage one: Insertion The implant is inserted into the bone Stage two: Uncovering A small incision uncovers the head of the implant in order to place a healing cap or abutment. Stage three: Impression In order to create a post and crown or denture, impressions must be taken. To be considered as a candidate for dental implants you must have sufficient bone to support the implant. Your periodontist can easily assess whether bone deficiency is present. In the event that the location of the implant is bone deficient your periodontist can choose to perform one of many safe and effective way to achieve bone density at that location (i.e. bone graft)

Why should I consider dental implants? A missing tooth can negatively impact your general health and that of your other teeth. Missing teeth decrease the ability to chew and it can allow other teeth to be lost, tipped or crowded. Implants improve comfort and provide easier eating and improved speech. Missing teeth can also affect your self-esteem due to poor appearance. Our office is committed to provide you with a treatment plan using metal free zirconium implants, which can help improve your beautiful smile naturally.
