THE MUNICIPAL MARKET’S MOST RELIABLE LIFT STATION. GUARANTEED.

For decades, municipalities have trusted Gorman-Rupp for the most reliable heavy-duty sewage pumps in the industry. But even the world’s best pump can’t operate alone.

Effective wastewater handling requires lift stations with valves, controls, pipes and pumps that all work together to meet your sewage handling needs. If any one of these components fails, it can put your operation–and your investment–at risk.

Gorman-Rupp created the ReliaSource® line of packaged, fully customizable, above- and below-ground lift stations to eliminate costly service interruptions caused by inferior parts. Every component of a ReliaSource lift station–from the pumps, to the NEMA-rated controls, to the corrosion- and weather-resistant

fiberglass enclosures–is 100% Gorman-Rupp custom-engineered, manufactured and assembled. With Gorman-Rupp quality inside and out, ReliaSource lift stations outlast and outperform any other lift station on the market, delivering trouble-free performance you can rely on. Guaranteed.

Since 1913,
Green has provided solutions that build communities and improve lives.

It is a Marathon, not a Sprint

One thing I have learned over the years is that producing safe and reliable drinking water is something that does not just happen overnight, it is something that continues to happen year after year continually improving. The best part is that this marathon is a relay. It takes an entire team to ensure that we are continually working towards providing safe drinking water to our communities.

This relay has different legs where we as a team contribute to win the race.

The first leg is the regulator helping and advising to ensure we are working to meet drinking water standards. The next leg is the consultants working to design an efficient and effective water treatment process. After that, the relay is taken over by the manufacturers and contractors who provide materials and build our communities state of the art water treatment plants. Coming in on the anchor leg is the water treatment plant operator who works every day to ensure all of the hard work by the previous individuals pays off.

The unique part of this marathon is that there is no finish line, and the legs may be switched up at any time. New regulations may dictate a change in the process. The manufacturer may produce a new product that improves the quality of the treatment process for the water operator. The water operator may go to the consultant with an idea for treatment plant improvement. On top of all of that, the daily maintenance and periodic repairs need to be completed. Our process is very fluid and continues to strive for improvement. •

Career Zone – How to build a high-performing team

Being part of a high-performing team brings members a powerful sense of accomplishment and pride, and a shared purpose. You can clearly recognize these traits in those who win the Super Bowl, the World Series, and even a Top Ops or Pipe Tapping championship.

In turn, high-performing teams generate major benefits for their organization, including:

• High value and strong results for customers and clients

• A work experience enriched with a can-do attitude

• A competitive advantage

• A positive culture where all employees are valued and respected

• A high level of trust and camaraderie among staff Developing a high-performance team requires skilled leadership, coaching, commitment, intentional effort and strong individual contributions. Below are some suggestions for building a highperformance team.

Develop team norms

Ask each team member to reflect on their best team experience, then list key behaviors and traits that contributed to the positive experience on individual sticky notes. As a group, post the sticky notes on a common whiteboard and group them by into categories. These might include trust, openness, punctuality, inclusive, and treating others with dignity and respect. Provide everyone with a list of the common norms and refer back to it as needed.

Communicate to build commitment

Schedule weekly or bi-weekly check-ins between the team leader and each member to ensure everyone stays on track. Hold coaching and mentoring discussions as needed, including necessary but uncomfortable conversations. Ask each member to reflect on these questions:

• How have I contributed to positive team dynamics?

• What’s working well and where can we improve?

• If you were team leader, what is the first change you’d make?

• What do you wish you had the courage to tell me about the team?

• How can I be a better team member or leader?

Hold team members accountable

Team leaders should evaluate individual team member performances based on how well they:

• Model team norms

• Perform individual job functions

• Support the needs of the team and the organization In addition, team leaders should immediately address any counterproductive behaviors that hinder the team or organization’s goals. Examples of behaviors that should be stopped immediately include complaining about other team members or being demoralizing or toxic toward others.

Creating a high-performing team is within reach. It just takes an intentional effort, some skills and a commitment to team norms.

It’s been quite foggy out the windshield for many teams and organizations lately.

The last years have been blurry with a fast-moving and often divided world. We’ve experienced differing modes of communication, the expansion of remote workers, a global pandemic, issues of racism, social injustice and equity, political and economic uncertainty, all while continuing the pur-suit to maximize the experience, product, or service that you are delivering to the marketplace. The view of the road ahead has been quite foggy for many teams.

The best leaders and organizations understand that cleaning off the windshield and the view of the road ahead is a necessity for those who are traveling with them. It’s not reactionary; it’s proactive. The best team cultures are committed – day in

and day out, month in and month out, year in and year out – to removing obstacles from the view and aligning their people on the next actions needed for the road ahead.

Leaders often beckon their people to “Trust the Process” but then are surprised or frustrated when people don’t just magically fall in line. The idea of ‘trusting the process’ is good in theory, but all too often the ‘process’ is blurry due to a lack of clarity on the game plan or the inability of the mes-senger to communicate the road ahead. Therefore, the ‘process’ is unclear and ‘trust’ is nowhere to be found.

The best leaders and teams on the planet understand their role is to help navigate their people through the fog and to continue to advance the mission. Here are five necessities to help your team navigate through the fog:

IDENTIFY OBSTACLES

Don’t assume everyone sees or has been willing to be honest about the obstacles, challenges, and threats you are facing as a team. Take time to step back as a team and identify the obstacles that lie ahead and assure the team that you will face them together with a solutions-focused mindset.

RECLARIFY YOUR MISSION/ VISION AND VALUES

Take a step back and make sure people’s sight is clear on the mission/ vision and values of your team. The mission is WHY you are going on the journey you’re on. It is the heartbeat and soul to all your efforts. The vision is WHERE you are heading as a team or organization. It’s the dream of what is

You can count on us for all your uid handling solutions! 952-758-6600 / 800-211-6432 www.electricpump.com Summer 2022 | Breeze 17 Click HERE to return to Table of Contents

possible and what can be created together. Paint the picture of what you hope to create that doesn’t exist and what that future vision looks like. Your values are HOW you are committed to traveling along the journey. They are the compass that helps you know that you are on track with HOW you’re committed to traveling. Values aren’t dictated to us, but are discovered, discerned and identified by participatory discussion.

ARTICULATE THE GAME PLAN

It’s hard to “Trust the Process” if we aren’t fully sure what the actual game plan is or the process for moving forward. Take time to articulate the strategy moving forward and why you’ll approach it the way you are as a team. The strategy is WHAT you are going to do proactively to bring the mission, vision and values to life. It’s the game plan that clarifies the priorities, people, and next actions to bring the dream into reality.

DEPOSIT TRUST AS THE MESSENGER

Trust does not magically exist between people or leaders and a team. It is bartered every single day by the deposits we make in the relationship over time. Do we do what we say we are going to do? Do we hold ourselves and others accountable for holding

up our end of the commitment? Leaders deposit trust by being transparent about the obstacles, what hasn’t been successful, and by honor-ing their commitments. As the messenger, they deposit trust by owning the next stretch of road ahead and jumping in with the team to seek solutions.

CASCADE CONSISTENT MESSAGES

As the strategy and game plan becomes clearer, rinse and repeat the message throughout the team and organization. Marketers remind us that it takes seven times for a consumer to hear a message before they take action and the same thing is true for cascading messages throughout your organization. Communicate the game plan over and over and over again and then continue to update the progress being made along the way.

Every time you return to these discussions and seek clarity as a team, the fog doesn’t quite seem so thick. The path forward becomes clearer. Your team may not have all the answers, but they’ll have a compass with clear direction on where to head.

The best cultures proactively help their people navigate their way through

the fog, together. They are grown, developed, cultivated, and led with intentionality. The process for developing high-performing and engaged teams never stops and the best leaders, teams and organizations are committed to setting the temperature in how they hire, onboard, do performance evaluations, develop emerging leaders, and recognize excellence. The best leaders invest in their teams and how they travel, together.

If you’re experiencing fog, division, negativity, blame, blurry vision, disconnection or uncertainty, it may be time to clean off the windshield!

STORAGE TANK VENTS

Installation and Pressure Regulation Can Make All the Difference

ne small appurtenance can make a big difference for water storage tanks. Vents help regulate water pressure and are a vital part of any storage tank. As storage tanks fill up with water, the air is displaced and exits through openings, such as vents and overflows. When water is withdrawn from the tank, the air has more space and can create a vacuum. An over-pressurized tank can create a vacuum, cause the tank to dent, or even collapse in extreme cases. Vents help prevent over pressurization.

Pressure-vacuumed, frost-proof vents are required according to AWWA D100 11 recommendations. Vents should be sized to relieve vacuum during peak flow times. AWWA D100-11 states that “Tanks equipped with roofs shall have a vent above the top capacity level, which shall have a capacity to pass air so that at the maximum flow rate of water, either entering or leaving the tank, excessive pressure will not be developed”.

Typically, vents are found on top of aboveground tanks, which means they are well away from potential contamination on the ground. Tank roofs should have vents above the top capacity level (TCL), according to AWWA D100-11 5.5. The vents should have the capacity to pass air so that excessive pressure won’t develop when the maximum flow rate of water is leaving or entering the tank. Overflow pipes are not considered tank vents.

The main vent should be near the center of the roof, even if additional vents

are required. The vent located at the tank’s center should be at least 20 inches and be a minimum of 4 inches in height. The vent must be removable if it is in the center, according to AWWA D100-11 7.4.3.2.

The vent should be in an accessible spot so inspections, maintenance, and repairs can be carried out safely. Access to vents, according to AWWA D100-11, are required. For multicolumn tanks, an outside tank ladder will suffice. An access tube ladder works for single pedestal tanks. Handrails should be installed around the top of the tank to meet OSHA standards.

Vents should have watertight coverings that help prevent precipitation and dust from entering the tanks. Vents should be equipped with No. 24 mesh screening. That will help keep out insects, birds, bats, mollusks, rodents, amphibians, and reptiles that can contaminate the tanks.

A pressure-vacuum screened vent or a separate pressure-vacuum relief mechanism should be provided, which will operate if the screens frost over or become clogged, according to AWWA D100-11 5.5.2. The screen or mechanism should be designed so there’s no damage from being clogged and will return to normal functioning after removing the blockage.

Vent screens should be protected from vandalism and unauthorized entry. However, they should be accessible enough to inspect, repair, or clean. Screens should be tightly fitted and properly located to prevent animal entry. Poorly maintained vents and screens can be sanitary hazards.

Screens in areas with freezing temperatures should be designed to open, discharge air, and reclose at pressure differentials greater than 1 inch but less than 2 inches of the water column, according to AWWA D115-17.

Snow and ice pile up around vents block the air passage. Frost-proof, pressure vacuum vents have breakaway mechanisms which are spring-loaded or equipped with a pressure pallet. Spring-loaded vents open, preventing freezing. Pressure pallets raise with rising pressure, which allows air to circulate in or out. Don’t let the name fool you – tanks located in warmer climates need frostproof, pressure vacuum vents just as much as those in chilly ones. The vents also deter insects and birds from building nests. Bird spikes can be placed on vents to help prevent birds from building nests.

The Northeast gets quite a bit of snow and ice each year, which means structures should be designed to handle

A FEW

winter storms. That isn’t always the case. There was an instance where a storage tank’s vent froze, causing the tank’s roof to cave and water to pool knee-deep. The tank’s owner was out $500,000 to

repair the damage that could have been solved by installing a frost-proof, vacuum pressure vent for a fraction of the cost. While manways and overflows are tank openings, neither is designed for

airflow. As the name implies, vents provide ventilation for airflow. Tanks that are improperly vented can create external pressure on the tank. That means the tank could buckle, dent, and, in worstcase scenarios, collapse.

Dents or buckles can appear in the most awkward places – like a town’s logo. In many towns and cities, the tallest structure might be a water tower. It’s often the first thing visitors see, so it’s common to have the town’s name painted across it or some emblem. Imagine driving through a town and looking at the water tower to see a caved-in water tower, making the town’s name hard to read. It doesn’t paint a good impression. That occurred in one city that’s tank froze due to lack of water circulation. The tank vent froze, over pressurized, causing a dent.

Riveted tanks or tinman tanks, so called as their shape resembles that of The Wizard of Oz character, usually have finial balls that provide enough ventilation. According to AWWA Manual 42, vents should replace finial balls when doing maintenance or repair work if the tank is remaining in service.

Installing and maintaining a frostproof vacuum pressure vent may not seem like that big of a deal, but it could potentially make all the difference between a functioning tank, and one that over pressurizes and suffers damages.

MINNESOTA AWWA TEAM TRIVIA CONTEST

The Young Professionals Committee will host a Trivia Contest to raise funds for the David B. Morris Endowment Fund.

We are asking businesses to support the contest with prize donations and/or table sponsorship

The David B. Morris Endowment Fund is used to support education through scholarships that help advance the technology needed for providing safe drinking water to people of Minnesota. Please join us as sponsors for the Trivia Contest with a donation of $100 as an event sponsor and/or donate a prize.
