Embracing the Opportunities Ahead

Happy New Year, everyone! 2022 is over, and 2023 has begun! Are your arms spread wide to embrace the opportunities ahead? I always try to identify three areas to capitalize on when a new year begins and then commit to those areas as the year progresses. The opportunities I see ahead in 2023 that every dental technician at any level should commit to are:

1. Education: The best way to build income and opportunity at any level is to bring more value to the marketplace by keeping up with continuing education and new products. Some examples are: ‘How to Create a Smile,’ ‘Full Mouth Rehabilitation,’ ‘How to Complete Ten Units in a Day Instead of Six,’ etc. Creating higher aesthetics and quality prostheses will lead to a more billable value, equaling a higher income for all. This year the Scienti c Committee has put together sessions they know will pique everyone’s interest. There will be subject matters such as solutionbased modernization of dental labs to systematic approaches for predictable outcomes, zirconia shade analysis, spatial awareness needed for digital work ows, and how nature and illusions work in the art of dentistry. The goal is to have everyone learn at least two to three new things per session. I am also incredibly excited to announce that we will be having a collective afternoon session together with all our colleagues. So, get ready for an exciting technical- lled afternoon at the PDC with Dr. Ed McLaren and his associate tech Jed Archibald. They will be lecturing on ‘How to Create Nature – When to Employ Digital and

Hand Creation Techniques.’ This will be fantastic education for ALL technicians of any specialty that will showcase how to create more value using nature.

2. Fees: Building more value into created prosthetics is always a fantastic way to boost income; however, another business approach we must all be aware of is t hat with an in ationary environment like we are in. I recommend ALL labs make an in ationary adjustment to their product fees, which is, at the minimum mirroring the BC Dentist Association Fee Guide – an increase of 6.8% for 2023. The DTABC will be making recommendations to lab members as information becomes available.

3. New Product/Technique Trends

: Always be on the lookout for the latest trends in treatments, whether from other markets, local key opinion leaders, or just a new request from a present client. O ering new products usually leads to providing more existing products as well, which creates more opportunities for everyone.

As we move ahead in 2023, I hope everyone will capitalize on the vast opportunities our profession has to o er. Always put your best foot forward in anything you create for a patient. Apply the three areas above, and 2023 will be amazing! God bless you all!

What goes up must come down, and what’s down will eventually go up, right? A group of individuals formed the ‘Sharp Thinkers Club’ and opined what the future might hold for markets and the economy in the upcoming quarter based on their go-to indicators. Sure, some things haven’t changed: investors are still worried about in ation, interest rates, and the war in Ukraine. But some things are di erent –we’ve seen mass tech layo s and mounting recession risks, and yet, investors have found reasons to be less pessimistic about 2023.

Dental technology has many similarities to the tech industry today. With a growing desire to adopt technology as the maker and shaper of a business, most labs have transitioned into the digital world. We can see by attending tradeshows, many companies, if not all, are selling some CAD/CAM, products, and materials which provide the same result. This standardization has allowed everyone to start from a blank slate and the only way to di erentiate oneself is to become creative in expressing our individuality. This process has allowed many dental technology professionals to become innovators and help build the successful systemic industry of dental technology we see today.

It is an established fact that we have a debt bubble. We have more debt than ever before in all asset classes. And the question is, what will pop that debt bubble? Up until now, in ation was a bigger problem than a recession. Today the FED is laser-focused on bringing in ation down, but how will they do that? By raising interest rates. And if raising interest rates continues to cause more pain in the economy, then we can either see a soft landing, a recession, or the FED change course and lower interest rates and in ation to avoid a recession. But if the FED continues to stay aggressive in raising interest rates, we can bet it will cause more economic pain. Based on how much pain this causes, it will a ect the debt bubble; the bigger the debt bubble, the bigger the crash. The bigger the bubble, the bigger the bust.

“Whether or not a recession is coming, around 40,000 companies close every month in Canada, but most months, a larger number open,” said Stephen Poloz, a former bank of Canada governor. So far, we’ve seen only a small uptick in closures, which is encouraging – the latest Stats Canada data, out in December 2022, showed 45,000 closures and 40,600 openings. Still, looking ahead, “We’ll probably have a period of excess closures,” Poloz says, and the degree of that excess will be telling.

To create value for our members this year, the free online education will continue to maintain and enhance our knowledge of new and improved ways of creating precise dental prostheses. The ADTO will send out a link to all members for the date and time of each course. Many new in-person courses will be provided with ADTO discount rates as well. The Board would also like to remind members to investigate health insurance bene ts on www.adto.ca, and keep an eye out for the next ADTO summer event (more details will be provided closer to spring). We highly recommend that members get involved and provide constructive feedback by email, phone, and by visiting the ADTO booth in tradeshows. We will continue to monitor the economy, nd new avenues for bene ts, and continue to be the authoritative voice of dental technology in Ontario.

Employee Retention Strategies for Increasing Job Satisfaction

With trends such as ‘quiet quitting’ and employee burnout being top of mind for many, employee retention has never been more important. A high turnover rate negatively impacts not just your bottom line but is also a red ag for potential new hires. It also has an adverse e ect on the morale of the existing workforce. To improve employee retention, employers should build a strong workplace culture where employees feel valued and motivated to come to work. Remember, the work environment has a huge e ect on overall sta morale.

It’s important rst to understand why employees leave their jobs. Below are the most common reasons why:

• Feeling overworked and unsupported

• A need for better work-life balance

• Not happy with management or company culture

• Lack of recognition

• Feeling overworked and/or unsupported

Below are six ways employers can increase retention in the workplace:

1. O er competitive salary and bene ts

As a result of the rising cost of living, many people change jobs for better pay. O ering a good compensation package makes employees feel valued and motivated. Ensure you are not underpaying and o er salary as well as bene ts that are aligned with industry standards.

2. Provide clarity and transparency during the interviewing process

It’s important to be clear on the job expectations and responsibilities from the beginning, so there is no confusion. For example, if the job may require occasional overtime, it should be made clear during the interview. When the employee isn’t made aware of what is expected in a role, it can lead to work dissatisfaction and increased employee turnover.

3. Recognize and reward good work

Acknowledging the hard work of employees makes them feel valued and appreciated. Organizing work socials and holding contests around holidays with rewards, such as gift cards, is another way to keep employees motivated at work. Even a small gesture, such as a shoutout over team chats, is an excellent way to recognize good work.

4. Encourage a work-life balance

Overworked employees are at higher risk of feeling burnt out and stressed – causing them to be less productive. They are also more likely to view their work and workplace negatively. Encourage your employees to disconnect from work after their o cial work hours. It’s essential to set realistic workloads and deadlines. Set up one-on-one meetings with employees to o er support and ensure their workload is manageable.

5. Growth opportunities

Opportunities for career advancement, or the lack of it, are also reasons employees may want to switch jobs. Not being given the opportunity to grow within the company may leave employees feeling unmotivated. Talk to employees and ask about their career goals, then provide them with the necessary tools and resources to advance in their careers.

You can also mentor your employees to take on new roles within the company

and promote from within when looking to ll vacancies.

6. Check-in regularly with sta

You don’t need to wait until the end of the year to sit down with sta and see how things are going. Regular check-ins are important when it comes to employee satisfaction, and it’s an excellent opportunity to address issues when they arise rather than wait until they become a bigger issue that a ects the employee.

Consider having regular review meetings to have a quick chat with sta . This will also let employees know they can reach out to their employer/manager and request feedback or ask any questions they may have. Creating an open culture that values employee feedback is a great way to constantly communicate with sta .

Would You like a More Profitable Lab?

If you are reading this article, you probably already have a lab and have many years of experience with it, or you’re just starting out. Either way, overhead is always a big issue and can be a hungry monster eating up the net income. Some months may even cause you to wonder why you are doing it at all, right?

The headaches of owning a lab come in various intensities and varieties. There are new products, materials, technology of all kinds, in ation, etc. And, of course, these are all very important to produce your product and provide the dentist or denturist with the perfect result they want for their patients.

Currently, one of the biggest headaches for ANY business owner is the sta issues which include hiring new sta , no quali ed sta available to be hired, losing good sta ,

sta wanting raises (as if you magically had more money coming in with which to pay them more), and sta getting grumpy and slow if you don’t give them their raise, and so on.

Perhaps you also experienced your dental clients referring less business to you during the COVID-19 pandemic, and sometimes still to this day, because they see fewer patients, partially due to COVID-19 restrictions and cleaning regulations. As a result, some dentists have slowed down on purpose and some retired early.

Need I go further in terms of your shrinking pro tability? You still have the same rent to pay, and you still have your sta to pay unless you start downsizing them, and on top of it all, you have additional expenses in this new digital world because you need to acquire those

pieces of equipment to stay current and relevant.

What is the answer, then, to increasing pro tability despite all those barriers? I thought you would never ask!

1. Start by writing down every reason or barrier you feel will prevent you from increasing your pro tability. If you have a partner, make sure they write theirs down for you as well.

2. Now tear up that list into little tiny shreds and cancel all of those reasons! We want to get those out of the way and start looking at how it CAN be done.

3. Let’s assume you have enough basic equipment to do awesome lab work, though you may not have the latest digital scanners and printers. Those can be bought later when your pro tability has skyrocketed.

SPRING 2023 11

MANAGEMENT TIPS

4. Next, make a list of all your clientele and put them in three categories: frequent users of your lab, occasional users, and ‘once in a blue moon, but haven’t heard from them for a while’ users.

5. Contact each of your frequent users and arrange a short meeting with them in person or by zoom. You want to have a face-to-face, down-and-dirty conversation with each of them to see what you and your sta could do to make them happier with your services (not your fees). Write down what they say, and whatever you do, don’t try and justify or explain away why you can’t do what they’re asking for. Thank them very much for their input. Basically, you are looking for opportunities to improve the service that you are providing to them. When the meeting is nished, you could discuss this with your sta to see how you could meet and exceed the expectations of each of those clients per their requests. Then, start implementing these on a oneto-one basis with the requesting clients.

6. Repeat the same steps with the other two categories of clients.

7. Make a checklist of these improvements and appoint someone in your lab to be the quality control person who will check weekly that each of the changes on the list are being done (for example: a crown delivered on time or early, which was made by your best crown person for the client that particularly wanted that). When checked o for the week, this checklist is then given to you to see what still needs work and will also help keep the lab accountable. In addition, these actions should increase the amount of business sent your way, giving you more income.

8. Have a weekly budget meeting where you (and anyone else you feel should/ could be in this meeting) work out what marketing should be paid for over the next few weeks, what are the bills that must be paid, what can be put into savings, and what needs to be set aside towards the future when you need to buy some higher priced equipment

and supplies. In other words, you want to control the spending so the income doesn’t get wasted on frivolous things that are unnecessary to run the business e ectively and e ciently.

9. By increasing the income and controlling expenditures, you will be more pro table and can use some of that to buy better equipment that will, in turn, help to increase the revenue further. And there you have it. Businesses don’t grow by sitting back, watching them, and waiting. Pro table businesses evolve by being pushed forward by ambitious, driven owners who provide exceptional service above and beyond what is expected.

This first part covers how to interpret shade information into a ceramic build-up, and ceramic layering techniques for creating the illusion of a single restoration. The second part covers the final touches of contour, texture, surface colorants, and polish can take average looking porcelain and create an exceptionally esthetic result. These steps are critical to the success of dental restorations weather it is composite or porcelain, or now monolithic Lithium Disilicate or Translucent Zirconia. A detailed 10-step process of finalizing indirect restorations will be a focus of the presentation.

DTABC Member Profile

Meet Justin Ku, RDT,

Justin Ku is 21 years old, describes himself as half-Japanese and half-Taiwanese, and was born and raised in Richmond, BC. After high school, he entered into the Dental Technology Sciences Program at Vancouver Community College (VCC) to pursue his interest in the dental eld. He recently completed the 2.5-year program in February 2022 and has been working full-time ever since. He said, “Now that I have passed my national credentialing exams, I am excited to move to the next step of my career.”

When asked why he wanted to become an RDT, he replied that he wanted to follow in his family’s footsteps, but that wasn’t the only reason. “As a child, I went through several years of palatal expanders, retainers, and braces. Battling a lisp due to the bulky expander and the constant pain in my jaw and teeth, I dreaded every moment and couldn’t wait for it all to end. This whole

experience sparked a curiosity that inspired me at school to learn more about the anatomy of teeth and the inner workings of the mouth,” Justin said. At the end of high school, he was on the waiting list for UBC but felt he wouldn’t be motivated or nd the desire to go through at least four years of university, “And I had always wanted to use my hands to work,” he said. So, despite eventually receiving the acceptance letter from UBC, he chose to pursue his interest in the dental eld and committed to becoming an RDT.

Justin noted that he was pleased with his educational experience when studying to become an RDT. “My education experience at VCC was very positive; the teachers and sta there were very patient and knowledgeable. Many of the teachers took time from their days to come and teach us, with most having a lab to manage on their own. This gave us students an idea of what the real world would be like once

we graduated.” Unfortunately, with the COVID-19 pandemic in full e ect during his second semester, the in-person classes had to be shut down. “With a eld that requires so much hands-on training, full lockdowns due to COVID-19 jeopardized our learning and practice time. We were unable to use the school facilities due to the pandemic, but the VCC teachers created new online classes and exercises for us to do from home, given the limitations. Their hard work and dedication to the next generation of technicians set a great example for me to follow in the future,” Justin exclaimed. Despite these challenges, Justin felt like his classmates supported each other and helped everyone succeed during these times.

After graduating from VCC in February, Justin set his sights on obtaining his license. “The rst obstacle was the knowledge exam. Coming from a more academic background, I felt more comfortable preparing for this exam. I spent two weeks reviewing the material required, and on the exam day, I felt I performed well, and it re ected in my results,” he said. “The biggest challenge for me was the performance-based

assessment (PBA) portion of the licensing exam. The new changes would take it from a ve-day to a four-hour exam, with each station being 20 minutes long. In school, I had always struggled with my speed in my work, and not being very artistically gifted, the hands-on work did not come as naturally for me as it did for some of my other classmates,” he continued. So, to study for the PBA, he spent another two weeks practicing in every eld – bending wires, waxing-up crowns, making dentures and RPDs. Still, he was anxious when it came time for the exam, he explained. “Despite all this practice, I was very nervous when it came time for the exam. With my con dence not there, my hands were shaky, and I constantly checked the time instead of just focusing on the task. But, in the end, I prevailed due to my training at VCC and my practice leading up to the exam.

Now that Justin is o cially an RDT, he had quite a bit to say when asked about his immediate goals. “My immediate goals as an RDT are to further my knowledge and skills in the eld. A few skills I think are important to learn now are the wax-up and the traditional skills of a technician. Many skilled, older technicians are moving on, and I think it is important to pick up those skills from them while they are still practicing.” While Justin is still young in the eld, he says he feels more comfortable working with the digital component of the lab, so learning the hands-on skills (the thing he says he needs the most practice with) from those available to help seemed like the best option. He’s currently working in his father’s lab, so when asked about his ve-year plan, he said he’s presently gaining experience from the day-to-day operations and helping to problem-solve any issues that might occur. “This gives me insight into the full scope of the lab instead of just from a workstation,” he said. “In the future, after I become more knowledgeable and skilled, I will look to take my skills away from the bench to obtain more clients and expand the lab’s workforce. Taking a more managerial approach to the lab will help me gain more knowledge of the business and allow me to be more personable with the clients and create new opportunities for the lab to grow,” Justin continued.

He also said that he would like to develop his people skills to work well with others and create a trusting group of people who want to work with him long-term.

Since graduating, Justin has worked in his father’s lab – D&R Dental. He rst started working part-time in 2019 when attending VCC and has been working fulltime for almost a year. When asked how it was going, he replied, “The experience has been great so far! I am able to learn and see many di erent cases and deal with each case directly through each step of the fabrication process. My mother also runs a lab adjacent to my father’s, so I can absorb knowledge from both of my parents while at work every day.” He said he has a lot of freedom on what to work on as well as the chance to use the various emerging digital technologies in the eld. “I have begun to work on surgical guides and have found a keen interest in implant technologies. Working with software like 3Shape and Implant Studio has allowed me to integrate my strengths from my hobbies and my interest in dental anatomy. In addition, the ability to experience many aspects of the lab, from the model stage to the nal nishing stage, really allows me to fully understand the process and work required to make a quality product.

When asked about some of his highlights so far in his budding career, he stated that the people have been incredible. “Being a young person

coming into a brand-new environment was a little daunting, but the supportive gures welcoming me to these new environments made me feel at home. Everyone I talked to would answer all of my questions, give me great advice, and provide an opportunity to work on real cases,” he said. This helped Justin build much-needed con dence in himself and gain crucial insight into how other labs operate. When asked about his biggest challenges, he repeated the national credentialing exam. “With the exam not being o ered in Vancouver, I had to go to another province and take the exam using di erent equipment in a foreign

environment. In addition to this, the format of the exam had just changed, leaving many not certain about what to expect. All of this, combined with my naturally slow working pace, I felt I had a lot on my hands in order to become an RDT.”

As Justin is just starting his career as an RDT, he has had little experience with DTABC so far but is excited about where his future may lead him. “My focus has mainly been on honing my craft, but with more

time and experience, I de nitely feel that a place on a committee or the Executive Board could come in the future. Coming from a family of technicians, I want the best for our eld and my fellow DTABC members, so nding the right place to make a di erence for the industry as a whole or for the generation of technicians to come after me is crucial.

What advice would Justin like to give anyone interested in becoming an RDT?

“For someone new to this industry, I would tell them to spread their time evenly through the physical and digital work ow. With CAD/CAM taking up much of the fabrication process, being pro cient in the digital side will increase your ability to predict and adapt to any new changes in the eld. On the other hand, practical skills are still essential to the craft, as the nished product will always need hands-on work to make it perfect for the patient.” He goes on to say that not all labs are digitized, so having the ability to work traditionally will create more opportunities for furthering one’s career. “Specialization is good, but to have the ability to adapt will help a newcomer nd success in many di erent labs.”

Outside of work, Justin can be found enjoying his time outdoors – particularly on the mountains snowboarding, in the lakes swimming or shing, and prawning in the local waters. “I snowboarded when I was younger and fell in love with it again recently. I have been improving my skills at Cypress Mountain, hoping to get the chance to visit some of the bigger mountains further inland,” he said. On warmer days, he likes to go paddleboarding with his friends or swimming in some of the local lakes.

“With such an abundance of outdoor activities on land, I also like to go out to sea. My friend runs his own chartering operation, and he takes me out on his boat from time to time. We will catch salmon or set traps for crabs and prawns, all of which I love to eat.” And lastly, on rainy days, Justin can be found playing video games with his friends or spending time with his cats at home and relaxing.

New Physioset TCR: 18 Xtra-Shapes made from Proven TCR Material

Zurich, Switzerland – November 2022: CANDULOR Launches 18 Additional Tooth Shapes and Creates an Extensive Family of Materials

CANDULOR has dedicated itself to developing and manufacturing arti cial teeth since 1936. The Swiss company attaches great importance to market feedback. Especially with a view to the American market, the need arose for additional proven shapes to meet current lab demands.

Diversity of shapes for your everyday work

The PhysioSet TCR tooth line has been complemented with 18 new shapes. A total of 48 age-appropriate anterior tooth shapes are available for the laboratory or dental practice to select from.

Alongside the PhysioSelect TCR tooth line with its youthful design launched in 2019, CANDULOR has created one of the largest material family with over 68 TCR anterior tooth shapes.

A family of materials provides assurance

Adaptation to the alveolar ridge, to abutments and antagonists, requires tooth materials that can be processed quickly. But also materials that reliably bond chemically to the base resin and which are plaque-resistant and abrasion-resistant.

The product family – consisting of the two tooth lines, PhysioSet TCR and PhysioSelect TCR – is made of the resistant TwinCrossedResin material, a modi ed polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) variant.

The polymer, but also the matrix, are evenly cross-linked and additionally tempered. This means that the pre-crosslinked polymer is again linked

to the matrix and condensed during production. This way, the tooth material meets the high requirements for plaque and abrasion resistance.

The extended product family with the additional 18 tooth shapes will be available from January 2023. You can obtain further information at:

Use Paper Responsibly

Today’s forest industry is working hard to become one of the greenest industries on earth.

Paper is an essential part of human civilization. While we all use and depend upon electronic communications, it is easy to ignore that it comes at an environmental cost. Worldwide spam email traffic creates greenhouse gases equivalent to burning two billion gallons of gasoline yearly, with numbers rising. More than $55 billion in toxic e-waste material is thrown away every year in the US alone, with a recycling rate of only 20% compared to 64.7% for paper.

No industry is perfect. But the paper industry has made, and continues to make, huge investments in environmental responsibility. Specifying and buying paper from certified sources ensures the continuation and growth of carbon absorbing forests. Using paper with appropriate amounts of recycled bre helps preserve forests, conserve energy, and maximize fibre usage through paper lifecycles.

“The Ivotion system has been a consistent winner in our clinic and lab. With reduced manufacturing times, less labour, and a product that has 3X the strength of conventional dentures, it is the number one choice in my lab. With Ivotion, we have reduced our post insertion appointments by 80% due to the high accuracy of the system. It has helped me build confidence and trust with my patients.“
