Uplifting idea... In a small kitchen, wall-mounted units provide valuable extra storage space, but open doors at head-height can get in the way. Magnet has come up with this clever soft-close bifold door, which opens upwards and out of the way, offering easy access to what’s inside. It is shown here in Astral Blue. Visit magnet.co.uk or call 01325 744093 for more ideas on kitchen innovation.

Q A
How can I give my plain kitchen a modern look on a budget? The easiest and cheapest way to update any room is through accessories, and the kitchen is no exception. With the simple addition of matching canisters and utensil holders you can create a whole new feel, and new tea towels and oven gloves will complete the look. If you have a kitchen table or breakfast bar, why not introduce some modern salt and pepper grinders? The Matrix set, shown above, from T&G Woodware (01275 841841, tgwoodware.com) costs £17.99 and offers zingy colour and modern design all in one.

On display By having all her glassware on display Michelle finds she has plenty of storage space in her cupboards.

Michelle Johnston converted a groundfloor bedroom into a kitchen-diner FEATURE VICTORIA JENKINS PHOTOGRAPHS WILLIAM GODDARD
WHO LIVES HERE? Michelle Johnston. WHERE IS IT? Bath. KITCHEN DIMENSIONS 5x6m plus dining area 2.5x4m. WHAT CHANGED? A bedroom and en suite bathroom were converted into an open-plan kitchendiner. Bifold doors were installed to provide access to the outside patio area.
‘W
hen I bought a 1970s awardwinning “upside-down” house in September 2010, I immediately set to work to reconfigure the layout and add a 3m extension to one end. I wanted to move the kitchen-dining area to the ground floor and it now takes up the space of the fourth en suite bedroom plus the new extension. The ground floor had been dungeon-like and I wanted to let in light and air. It meant digging up the original bedroom flooring before having the whole kitchen-diner re-screeded for a seamless link. The final touch was laying Crema Marfil marble tiles. Michelle Johnston

THE PROJECT Chic option The all-in-one extractor, carbon filter and light above the island makes a real statement.

GHO_0113_JohnstonKitchenMakeover.indd 19
■ Before installing the underfloor heating, the entire kitchen-dining area needed a new concrete layer to make it level. The underfloor heating was installed on top and then the floor was re-screeded. If this had not been done then the marble tiles placed above would have cracked in due course. ■ Four bifold glazed doors were installed to lead in to the garden. ■ A false wall was built to hold the bespoke floor-to-ceiling shelving, cupboards and drawers. It is made of double thickness MDF bolted together. ■ Michelle had spotlights and the wiring for the appliances all hidden behind the framework of the shelving for a seamless look. ■ The walls and ceiling were painted in Suede 1 from the Paint & Paper Library. ■ An island unit houses the sink, hob and food preparation area.

BUYING ADVICE
Built-in ovens
Do your homework before you buy to ensure you get the best oven for your needs…
Cook up a storm in the kitchen with a sleek and streamlined new built-in oven
SIZE & CAPACITY
Ovens are available in single and double designs and each has their benefits. Single built-in models are a good option for smaller kitchens, measuring just under 60cm tall, and can be fitted into a kitchen unit or under the countertop. Double ovens offer more flexibility and capacity and you can set each oven differently to suit your cooking needs. Most on the market are built-in and offer a combination of a multifunction or fan oven situated below a smaller conventional oven with grill. They usually measure just under 90cm tall and are fitted into kitchen units at eye level.
ENERGY RATINGS
Say goodbye to hours of oven cleaning with a pyrolytic model that will do all the hard work for you. QUADRO® ZOP3790XK single pyrolytic oven, £429, Zanussi.

hether you’re a pro in the kitchen or tend to stick to more simple recipes, a new oven can work wonders at giving your skills a boost and can’t fail to add instant style. As our lives get busier, any gadget that helps save time and effort will always get our vote and the new generation of built-in ovens has never been so intelligent, easy to use and programme-packed. Electric ovens are efficient at maintaining an even temperature, distribute heat evenly and there’s a wealth of models to choose from at every price point. Fan ovens provide an even temperature throughout and heat up quickly, saving energy and reducing cooking times. You should be able to

An energy efficient oven will help reduce cooking times and save on your bills. There is a host of A-rated models on the market at very affordable prices, so there’s no reason to go any lower than this. You will also come across ovens awarded an A+ (A-10%) or A++ (A-20%) rating that means they are 10% or 20% more efficient than a standard TOP TIP A-rated model. Always check first

cook a variety of different dishes at one time without the worry of strong flavours crossing over as the circulating air breaks up odours. Most multifunction ovens combine a fan and conventional oven with a grill and offer ultimate cooking flexibility. They work by using a mix of different heating elements plus a fan. Gas ovens are cheaper to run than electric but you’ll find less choice around; only 10 per cent of built-in ovens sold are gas. Because they are heated by a flame at the rear of the base and hot air circulates as it rises, there will be greater heat at the top of the oven and it won’t distribute as evenly as an electric model.
catalytic oven liners that will help break down food spills and make oven walls easier to clean or, if that still sounds too taxing, choose an oven with a pyrolytic programme. Just press a button and all dirt and grease will be eliminated, leaving a neat pile of ash to sweep away.
FUNCTIONS/PROGRAMMES
All ovens offer a variety of functions and the choice available will vary on how much you are prepared to spend. A steam function provides a quick, healthier cooking method at mealtimes and look out for an automatic recipe function, which selects the best times and settings.

hen I was planning my new kitchen I wanted to get the best appliances I could afford, not just for convenience but for energy saving too. The oven and dishwasher ticked all the boxes as they can both be used at half capacity. Even the four-slice toaster can be used for two! To ensure maximum worktop space I chose an under-counter fridge and freezer. I had worried the fridge would be too small, but it has one half-depth shelf, which means I can still stand tall things in the front. Nigel Lloyd

Nigel was able to change the hinge around on the fridge door so that it opens from the left, away from the wall.
On the floor
SPEAKING FROM EXPERIENCE Nigel says: ’One of my more indulgent purchases was a wine cabinet. It looks great and does keep the wine cool but, as with most wine cabinets, the temperature reacts to the ambient temperature of the room, so if I want very cold wine in the summer, I still need to put the bottles in my normal fridge.’
The vinyl floor looks like wood but is more forgiving of spills. Nigel uses an electric steam cleaner to keep it clean.
Window wow Nigel wanted shutters but, as a more economical choice, installed wide-slat blinds instead. ‘They still look great and take up less space than blinds would have.’

BUYERS’ GUIDE
BUYING ADVICE
Dishwashers
SIZE
There are a few different sizes of dishwasher available. A full size or standard 60cm dishwasher is the largest, while slimline 45cm models get the thumbs up for compact spaces and smaller families. You may also consider a countertop design that isn’t much bigger than a standard microwave.
Save time, money and water with a new dishwasher, packed with the latest features
PLACE SETTINGS/CAPACITY
The capacity of a dishwasher is determined by how many place settings it has, i.e. the maximum number of plates and eating utensils the machine can wash, excluding any saucepans, serving dishes or utensils. A standard machine will usually feature 12 but some now offer 14 or as many as 17 place settings. You can expect 6–9 place settings in a slimline model.
PROGRAMMES
The amount of programmes will vary depending on the machine, but will usually include a main wash, eco wash, quick wash and rinse-only cycle. One of the most impressive is a sensor wash, which works out how dirty your dishes are, then adjusts the time, amount of heat and cycle time accordingly.
RATINGS
Every dishwasher has an energy efficiency grading ranging from A-G, with A being the most efficient. Each model will also be rated for drying and cleaning performance.

Kitchen styles…
Kitchens to suit your budget
If you only have a modest budget to renovate your kitchen, you don’t have to skimp on style. Read on for tips and inspiration ◀ Nicely framed
White kitchens…
under £10,000
Even on a budget you can find a smart, innovative kitchen. Keep a close eye on all the different costs and be prepared to do a few weeks of research before making your purchases, keeping an eye out for online bargains and upcoming sales. White cabinetry never looks out of date and you can update your scheme by just painting the walls.
The addition of a glossy black splashback and some timber details makes all the difference in a white kitchen. Glass splashbacks can be costly so look online for bargains, or consider painting the walls in the colour you require and adding plain glass panels (using toughened/laminated glass), which can be cut to the size you require from a high-street glazier.
CLEVER BUYS ❊Internal fittings such as
pull-out racks and corner units can bump up your spend on cabinets; look at drawer units and open shelves as less costly options. ❊Look out for special offer ‘packs’ for sinks and taps, oven/hob/ extractor sets and free-standing fridge-freezers.
◀ Thinking ahead
Painted finishes can be refreshed in years to come. Start with ivory or white for a few years, then add your own colour using hardwearing eggshell. Shaker kitchen in Ivory finish, from £7,000 for a kitchen, Trend Interiors, 0121 765 3601, trendinteriors.co.uk.

▶ Island designs
The island concept is hugely popular at the moment, and is an excellent use of space in an open-plan kitchendining room. If the sink is being moved to the island unit, it also makes sense to site the dishwasher in the island, not just for the convenience but also for the plumbing.

A two-island layout is a very appealing idea if you have the space available. Here, one island is designated for cooking, the other for prep and washing up. under £10,000 Choose wood cabinetry if you want to achieve a warmer look in the kitchen; it’s still a ‘neutral’ option, and can be teamed with a huge variety of colours and textures.
◀ Glossing over
Wood-effect cabinets are given a modern twist in a high-gloss finish. Here, a deep plum accent colour adds another dimension to this contemporary kitchen. Handleless doors keep the look slick and streamlined while a pale floor lifts the overall look. TOUCHES
Laminate work surfaces, upstands and splashbacks are often a good choice for large kitchens, where you might want to reign in the budget a little. Team work surfaces with matching upstands for a very neat look – it also solves the problem of uneven walls looking messy between wall and work surfaces.

A hit of colour makes instant impact, but a kitchen doesn’t have to be drowning in colour – even just a few bright shades will cheer up a scheme.
▲ Red hot
▲ Sherbert fizz
There’s nothing like a shot of clashing pinks and oranges to add vibrancy to a colour scheme. Use eggshell if you’re painting over existing cabinetry. Bongo Jazz, Orange Fizz and Rock Candy eggshell, £13.09 for 0.5ltr, Collective Passion range at Dulux, 0844 481 7817, dulux.co.uk.
It takes a lot of courage to create a colour scheme as bold as this one, but the strength of the red is broken up with mosaic tiles, a set of white wall cabinets and stainless steel appliances and accessories. Red is the perfect warming colour for a cold room. This scheme would look good at the end of an open-plan space – creating a focal point. Abstrakt High Gloss Red kitchen with metal effect edging, also in Black, Grey and White, from £76 for a 600mm base cabinet, from Ikea, 0845 358 3363, ikea.co.uk.
◀ Mellow & muted
Grey is the ‘new’ neutral, and it does have the advantage of working with strong colours as well as the more subtle pearly and silvery greys. Add strong slices of colour by simply painting the splashback area above the work surface and between wall cabinets like this bright yellow wall here. Emulsion is tough enough if there’s no sink or hob in the vicinity. Masoni kitchen in Grey, from £5,444 for the cabinets shown, Wickes, 0845 274 1000, wickes.co.uk.

If your walls are a bit on the wonky side, a relatively inexpensive way of revamping them is to use tongue-and-groove panelling (available at DIY stores). Inspiration for a luxurious look
If you have a bit more to spend, there are myriad designs to choose from to give your new room a truly high-quality feel White kitchens…
◀ The white room
Of course, everyone’s budget is different, and there are lots of factors that push the budget up or down. If you decide to go for something highend, consider the longevity of the design; the beauty of a white kitchen is that it can be adapted with colourful accessories to create a new look so you don’t need to spend a lot to change it.

COST CONTROL ❊ Remember, appliances and
work surfaces can have a huge impact on your kitchen spend. ❊High-end work surfaces, such as granite and marble, can cost from £300 per linear metre. ❊Appliances can add up as well. Range cookers can cost from around £1,000 to £5,000+.
◀ Ceramic & stone
The more costly kitchen ranges have a greater choice of materials used for the door and drawer fronts. One of the latest from Alno is a ceramic material that has a beautiful smooth feel. Cera kitchen in Oxide Avorio, from £25,000, Alno, 0870 043 3742, alno.co.uk.

By downloading special apps to your phone or tablet computer you’ll be able to monitor the progress of a wash cycle, pre-heat the oven ready for your return from work or just start the dishwasher. There’s even scope to download specific wash programmes designed for your favourite laundry detergent. Even the traditional range cooker has been influenced by technology; the new AGA i-Control can be controlled using a smartphone.

martphones are also influencing the look and usability of our ovens and hobs with full colour touch screens set to be a ‘must have’ feature. You’ll not find many touch screens on basic ovens yet, but top-of-the-range models with hundreds of programmes can really benefit. I’d love a wood floor, but is it suitable for a kitchen-diner? Wood swells and contracts with temperature and humidity, so for durability in the steamy atmosphere of a kitchen you may want to choose an engineered version. These floors are still made from wood, but the floor is created in layers that make it more stable than solid flooring. The Oak Erve three-strip oak wood floor (shown here), from £30.96 per sq m, from the Avanti Range at Kährs, 02392 453045, kahrs.co.uk, comes in a satin lacquer, matt lacquer or nature oil prefinish.

What are the alternatives to a tiled splashback behind my hob? Glass splashbacks are a practical and popular alternative to tiles, and will do a great job of protecting the walls in cooking and sink areas. You can opt for plain glass, a coloured version that’s as bold as you’d like, pattern, marble or wood veneers or fantastic images, such as this Beach Icon-Glass splashback from Glassdomain, 0121 236 6637, glassdomain.co.uk. Both standard and bespoke sizes are available with prices starting from £180. Glass splashbacks are easy to keep clean, and made from toughened glass for safety.
