FH500 IS LOGGER FIRM’S RECOVERY RANGE T HITS THE ROAD FIRST NEW TRUCK

eaver Transport of Whitchurch, Shropshire has taken delivery of its first ever new truck – a Volvo FH500 6x2 tag-axle tractor unit. “My father, Graham, who founded the company some 65 years ago, passed away four years ago this May and I wanted our first-ever new truck to be in his memory,” said managing director, Nick Weaver. “He swore by Volvo, so when it came to ‘biting the bullet’ and investing in a new truck rather than used, I turned straight to the Hartshorne dealership in Shrewsbury.” The FH with a Globetrotter XL cab and medium-height suspension features a tag axle, which was insisted upon by Nick. “We like tagaxles a lot!” he said. “For our business the tagaxle is so much better than a mid-lift as much
of our work is on forest tracks where traction and manoeuvrability are key.” The new truck features a 12.8-litre D13K engine producing up to 2500 Nm of torque, and Volvo Engine Brake providing up to 375 kW of retardation. The new truck joins eight other FH tractor units at the company, all of which were purchased through used truck channels. “There is also a tenth truck, an old F12 that I’m in the process of restoring,” added Weaver. The new truck was also specified with Volvo’s on-board weigh system. “We run close to – or on – the GVW most of the time, so a reliable weigh system is invaluable,” Weaver said. “The system is really good, extremely accurate and definitely something we’d go for again.”

ollowing a tour of Renault Trucks’ factory in Lyon, France, Karen Yuill Recovery Ltd has switched to Renault for its latest fleet additions. The Hamilton-based light and commercial vehicle recovery specialist has taken delivery of a 40-tonne Range T430 4x2 tractor unit with Night & Day cab and Renault Trucks Master L1 H1, both supplied by Renault Trucks Scotland. The tractor unit, on a 36-month contract hire through BRS Ltd, joins Karen Yuill Recovery’s latest business venture – a multi-car transporter carrying vehicles involved in road traffic accidents for insurance companies. The Renault Master operates as a roadside service van, repairing customer’s vehicles. “I was so impressed by what I saw on the factory tour that I placed an order for a Range T and Master Van,” said Karen Yuill Recovery director, Willie Kerr. “The efficiency, build quality as well as the testing prior to the vehicles going on the road gave me the utmost confidence they were the right trucks for our business. “The new Range T has been brilliant and the driver’s love it, especially the comfort and the ‘fancy toys’, and it’s proving itself well on economy too” he added. “And the service from Renault Trucks Scotland and BRS Ltd has been great.”

What’s your view? Star
Letter THE WRONG AGE FOR ROAD RAGE Having held a licence and at it for 50 years, I reckoned I had seen and witnessed it all; and for one who only does an odd day now and again, you would think there is little more to experience from the aggressive motorist. Oh, how very wrong to think so. So just recently, I was returning back in early believing I’d had a unique day on the road. No toy-boy cut-ups, no vile jibes or offensive gestures, no jumped-up huff and puff of McDuffs superseding their point of intelligence; indeed a near-perfect day as you could get in the rat race which has now become the public highway. Having travelled back over the Manchurian Way, I got to the Liverpool Road end (that’s the stop-and-crawl-along-at-2 mph end. It was at this time I and most of the other motorists in the jam became aware of a honking horn and some loud, foul rantings. Most motorists were mesmerised. Looking around, I spotted a car slowly crawling down the slip road to join into the main carriageway. The car was being driven by a young man and he was clearly directing his loutish behaviour towards me. Why, I don’t know. He was screeching F’s and C’s and jabbing his fist at me, pointing at my motor. I gestured a dismissive wave of my hand, shook my head to indicate I was not playing. I had done nothing wrong. Most of the motorists gazed on, totally mystified at his continued behaviour and threats. Still on the slip road, this lout started to move forward of me, trying to pull into the main carriageway. It was at this point it happened. I doubt if a primate could reenact this move. He leapt out of the car, leaving the door wide open, jumped up the front of my unit, grabbing hold of the wipers, pushed his spitting, screwed-up, screaming face into my windscreen, F’ing and C’ing and making no sense whatsoever.
I didn’t understand a word of it, so I leaned forward and told hime loudly and firmly “to get down now”. Surprisingly, this he did and appeared to move away to the left, still muttering abuse, walking back to his car. Two ladies at the side of me had become very worried and frightened, so I waved them around to go forward in their car. I went into gear and moved off, then a hand grabbed my mirror arm, and up came screaming lout again, putting his screaming head through the open driver’s side window. Well, this then had become a case of impending assault, and my right to self-defence. What else would this crazy lout do next? So I took the initiative by placing my hand against his forehead and aided and abetted Newton’s law of gravity to place this assailant back on terra firma. The lout did not land too gently and he clutched at his leg, screeching “Ouch!”. I then stared right down at him and made it quite clear: last chance, last warning, do not climb up again or I will get out and slap you with my bus pass. I think he then realised how hefty and grizzly I looked, and his loutish persona wasn’t working on me. He had just made himself the laugh of the city bypass. I did get a little cheer from a chap in a van. The last I saw of this idiot was in the middle of the Mancy Way, clutching a limb with not much to shout about. So I returned to the depot, reported the incident and called in at the police station on the way home. I made a complete report, as it happened – and it’s a damn good job I did. I was asked several questions, including if I had collected names of any witnesses (which I hadn’t). So they said they’d check CCTV footage and track down any evidence, though this came to nothing due to high vehicles blocking vision. The police thanked me for my report and
EURO TREKKING
thanked me for keeping composed during the event, which could only be described as road rage. They rang me a bit later to tell me there had been no complaint towards me, and they had not managed to trace the other party. Around a week later, I was on holiday, sailing around the Canary Islands, when I received a phone call. The police (another region) wanted to speak to me over an allegation of dangerous driving and cutting up a car on the highway. As soon as I got back home, I rang the officer in question who was again very helpful and had no idea I had already reported the full incident on the day it occurred. Apparently, the ‘other party’ made a hasty phone report some days later. The officer apologised for not being aware of my previous report, and I went through it with him again. I then answered the allegation of dangerous driving and cutting up. It is not just luck and coincidence that I have help a squeaky-clean licence for over 50 years. As for cutting up, how can anyone cut up a car that was not even on the same carriageway, and when you’re in a traffic jam doing 2 mph? The officer thanked me and said he would speak to the other party. He was quite convinced I had done nothing unlawful. If you run this story, the point I’d like to make is always report the facts of a serious incident, which could be deemed a criminal act, before some cretin puts in a tale of fiction as a belated cover in the aftermath. Remember, drivers: your licence and CPC can be removed on matters other than driving offences. A lout can be a lout and keep his car licence, though this may not be the case for us truck drivers. Too often, thugs get away with laughable justice, when we get hammered all the time. I hope this point is taken and understood.

I read the letter from Mr Vick in the April issue’s letters with interest. I miss the days of T forms, obtaining permits from Newcastle, queuing on the stairs at Dover to get paperwork stamped on the way out, stopping at Aachen to get all the paperwork done and the diesel dipped, which meant time for coffee and a chat with other drivers along the way. Having a wallet full of different currency was all part of the fun of driving abroad. I can remember when Felixstowe would be a sea of yellow Curries of Dumfries lorries, Brinor, Morrison Freight, Foulgers to mention a few more local ones. Where have the Thompson Jewitt’s gone, and Lowes of Paddock Wood? Most hauliers that do still undertake European work use more and more East European traction, and it’s no longer Polish trucks – its Slovenian, Croatian, Hungarian, Slovakian, Estonian and Latvian, and more and more of them are pulling unaccompanied trailers out of Felixstowe, Immingham and Killingholme. English, French and German trucks are left to do internal work only, and the sight of an English truck abroad is a rarity as freightforwarders slash rates to the bone. No, the borders coming down was the end for international haulage and if Brexit puts an end to foreign trucks carrying out cabotage in this country, it may be a good thing for us Brits and maybe rates will start to rise.

Deadpool Actors: Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Gina Carano Certificate: 15 Run time: 108 minutes Price: £9.99 Yes, another Marvel comics movie – but what a breath of fresh air. If your capacity for 12-rated, family-friendly superhero tussles is waning, Deadpool’s brand of irreverent, fourth-wallbreaking and decidedly adult mayhem may well restore your faith. But it doesn’t just bring superb action – it’s also incredibly funny, with the sardonic lead character played to perfection by Ryan Reynolds. Rating:

The Beeb has released a second volume of special-edition covers of classic ’80s tunes as performed by modern artists, and pretty good it is too. No attempt at disguising it, not even in the PR – this is pure keyboard-driven radio-friendly melodic rock al a 1980s. The stand out though has to be the vocals, and not just the harmonies which are terrific in themselves. In a first ‘blind play’ I actually thought I was listening to the awesome John Miles (Music… is my first love) at his Rebel peak. That good! Rating:

nless provided by the State or some other benefactor, everything we acquire and every service we use costs us money. However, until March 2013 this was not quite the position with most Personal Injury claims, as up to then anyone injured in an accident that was someone else’s fault could be assured that if their claim succeeded they would keep 100% of their compensation, as their solicitors’ costs in making the claim would be paid by their opponent (usually the opponent’s insurers). If the claim was lost they would have legal expenses insurance that would pay the expenses incurred by their solicitors during the case and also cover any liability to pay their opponent’s legal costs. Fuelled by the insurance industry lobbying, Government changes came into effect in April 2013 and transformed the landscape dramatically. Successful claimants could no longer recover all their legal costs from their opponent and instead became liable to pay their solicitors a proportion of their compensation towards these costs. Fortunately, legal expenses insurance remained available to meet costs liabilities in failed cases.
ADVERTORIAL
In this issue Steven Hinchliffe of the professional drivers’ “go to” Personal Injury specialists Hinchliffes Solicitors (see their advert on the front page) considers
“SOLICITORS’ COSTS IN PERSONAL INJURY CLAIMS AND WHY THEY ARE IMPORTANT TO YOU”
“Solicitors make a lot of money - why can’t they absorb the shortfall in costs so the injured person can still have 100% of their compensation?” Attractive as this argument may be, it is a fact of life that firms of solicitors are businesses and without sufficient income to cover their overheads and liabilities they will go bust. In fact, over the last 3 years or so a significant number of firms (both large and small) have failed, usually because they had to borrow too much from their banks to keep going and then found they did not have sufficient income to pay their debts. They fell victim to the new era in Personal Injury claims, which requires firms to be leaner and more efficient, while still maintaining professional standards. “Why do solicitors complain that life is tough, when they now take part of their clients’ compensation to pay their charges?” Even though an injured person now pays part of their own legal costs this usually does not come close to making up the shortfall in the costs previously recoverable from their opponent. In April 2013 when the Government slashed the level of legal costs the guilty party has to pay, it also imposed limits on the amount solicitors can deduct from their clients’ compensation. The formula is complicated, but generally there is a deduction limit of 25% of the compensation, but this can vary depending on the differing contractual arrangements offered by each firm. Usually, solicitors can deduct up to 25% of a client’s compensation, but this must include VAT and therefore just under 21% of the compensation relates to the firm’s actual fees. In addition, some firms charge the cost of a legal expense insurance policy, together with any expenses the opponent has avoided paying (eg for medical records or search fees). Insurance companies set premiums according to risk, and for a legal expenses policy the premium is higher in contested cases where Court proceedings have been issued, and higher still where the level of compensation recovered is more than £25,000 and here a premium of £2,500 would be commonplace. At the other end of the scale, for a low value uncontested claim the premium can be as little as £35. For example, if your claim succeeds at trial and your compensation is £30,000 and you had instructed Firm A, they could charge 25% of your compensation, plus an insurance premium of £2,500 and an unrecovered
Steven Hinchliffe expense of say £350. This would total £10,350. However, if you had instructed Firm B, who agreed at the outset to cap all deductions at 25% of your compensation (including the insurance premium and unrecovered expenses), they would only charge you £7,500. The difference between what the 2 firms would deduct would therefore be £2,850. This shows how important it is for you to double check what your total costs exposure might be before you chose which firm of solicitors to instruct to handle your accident claim. There are other limitations on what solicitors can apply the 25% deduction to. Firstly, they must have done enough work to justify the deduction as the 25% is not a commission. Also, if the claim includes compensation for future losses (eg lost income if the client can no longer work) these must be excluded from the calculation. Generally, if the compensation is a few £1,000 in most cases the full 25% deduction will be justified, but if it is around £50,000 or more and the work done by the solicitors was fairly modest, the injured person can expect a much lower percentage to be deducted. Legal costs is a complicated issue. Do not be afraid to ask your solicitors exactly what their arrangements are as once you have signed their contractual papers it will be too late to change your mind. You do not have to be a professional driver to seek our help - anyone hurt in an accident (eg members of your family or friends) can contact us for advice. I had the following letter from a truck driver who felt he had been harshly treated by a roadside enforcement officer. The driver wrote to the authorities as follows: ‘I was travelling from Erith distribution centre back to the Dartford Crossing. I have done this journey only a few times in past. The first time, the access road to the crossing northbound was closed for roadworks, on the last occasion it was open to all traffic and high vehicles had access to Tunnel 2 via a break in the barrier. ‘On approach to the roundabout, the weather was raining and dark and there was no sign indicating restrictions for my vehicle. I approached the roundabout and proceeded to exit the roundabout as indicated for the Dartford Crossing. Just as I entered the slip road, I noticed the sign height – however I was already on the slip and had another vehicle in front and behind me, so it was impossible to stop safely and rectify my error.
2. Accident Spot Feature in Truckstop News - Issue 368.indd 1
‘I immediately pulled over at end of the slip in a safe position and approached Dartford security officers. I explained what had happened and they escorted me safely back to the roundabout with directions on how I need to access the tunnels with a 4.8 m trailer. On entering the bridge over the M25, I was asked by a patrol officer to follow his to their examination area. At this point, I was requested to hand over my paperwork and licence. I was asked about the error, so I explained what had happened. The officer then issued me with this fixed penalty of £100 and three points. I again explained, but to no avail. This was a genuine mistake and I immediately realised this and made sure I safely corrected it, so I feel this is very unfair given my actions. I sent a letter regarding this to the authorities, but I received an indifferent reply to pay my penalty as soon as possible.’ The response the driver received was as follows:
04/05/2016 15:30
‘Thank you for your correspondence. Following consultation with our legal team and the issuing officer, a decision has been made that the above fixed penalty is to stand. Please see below the response from the issuing officer regarding this matter: “Thank you for your letter, as you can see from the map attached there are three signs on
the road you took to get to the Dartford Crossing. Therefore, the Fixed Penalty Notice still stands.”’ This all happened over Easter and has left the driver feeling badly treated. I would be very interested to see whether other drivers have had similar experiences. If you have, please let us know at tsn.ed@kelsey.co.uk

MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICE IF YOU ARE BUYING HGV DRIVER LICENCE TRAINING
O
n Friday 12th February, RTITB launched its new HGV Driver Training Standard, the first of its kind in the HGV driver training profession. RTITB set out the desire behind the creation of the Standard which was to create a marketplace where everyone knows what high quality HGV driver training looks like and how to find it. The Driver Training Standard has been created to help improve and maintain standards in truck licence acquisition training so that purchasers of the courses can have confidence in what they are buying. The Standard provides an audit-based approval system that checks the standards of instructors, vehicles and premises and provides all approved organisations with dedicated training materials, resources and support for HGV instructors. A licence acquisition training course currently costs around £2000-£3000, with only a 52% (approx.) first time pass rate, it’s a big gamble. RTITB aims to have an overall first time pass rate of 75% for training conducted by Standard approved organisations. “The new Driver Training Standard will greatly benefit drivers, employers, and the transport industry as a whole, particularly as part of the solution to the ongoing skilled driver shortage” says Laura Nelson, Managing Director of RTITB. “This is the first time such a standard has been set. It is designed to improve the quality of the training learners receive. The standard ensures drivers are taught to be
safe and productive at work, and provides a benchmark to measure the training given. It will also help identify organisations which provide good quality training and deliver more than the minimum required to gain a ‘pass’ on the DVSA test. Just look for the stamp of approval.” adds Laura Nelson. The courses delivered are structured around the four modules required for vocational LGV licence acquisition and was developed in conjunction with industry experts, logistics employers (both large and SMEs) and highly experienced and professional training providers. Using a Standard approved training organisation provides assurance that training will be conducted to a high standard; just look for the logo. To purchase Standard approved HGV licence acquisition training please call +44 (0)1952 520200 (option 6) or email lgv_ trgstandard@rtitb.co.uk with details of your requirements. For more information about the standard please visit www.rtitb.co.uk.

SAMWORTH SETTLES ON ITS FIRST 35 VOLVOS
New trucks are the first Volvos on Samworth’s 100-strong fleet
I
n the largest single order for trucks ever placed by the company, 35 FH tractor units have joined the fleet of chilled foods logistics specialist Samworth Brothers Supply Chain. These are the first ever Volvo trucks to enter service with the 100-strong fleet. The company is the transport and distribution arm of Samworth Brothers, a food manufacturer which owns well-known brands such as Ginsters and Soreen. Samworth Brothers Group is a fourth generation family business with headquarters in Leicestershire. The order comprised 34 FH460 6x2 tractor units plus a special white-liveried FH500 driver training vehicle. The latter is equipped with I-Shift Dual Clutch and extra seats. The truck is used exclusively by drivers undergoing training with the operator’s recently launched Driver Academy. As well as developing the professional driving skills of existing drivers, the Driver Academy is also involved in recruiting and training new drivers from both inside and outside the company. Known as the ‘Warehouse to Wheels’ initiative, Samworth Brothers said the programme fits with its vision and values, where a culture of opportunity and learning is in place to allow staff to achieve their full potential. “A significant factor behind Volvo’s success in winning the 35-truck order was the fact they grasped the Driver Academy concept and worked with us jointly to come up with the special training vehicle,” said Samworth Supply Chain general manager, Matthew Preston. “Suppliers need to add value to
Company specified extra seating in its FH500 driver training vehicle what they traditionally would bring to the usual purchasing and supply negotiations. Volvo successfully did that with their proposal to supply the Driver Academy vehicle. We wanted the best truck for exclusive use by the Driver Academy and with the FH500, I-Shift Dual Clutch, with its extra seating, we believe we have that.” The procurement process also involved a fuel trial. “We looked at five makes over a four-week period,” Preston said. “Each manufacturer recommended the truck type they offered for the fuel trial and we measured fuel usage via the truck’s telematics and also at the diesel pump.” Each vehicle was trialled with a mix of single and double-deck trailers to balance the workload and ensure a fair trial. So far, Preston said the new FHs are performing ‘above average’ for the fleet. The trucks, which are all replacements, are maintained in-house by the Samworth Brothers Supply Chain Vehicle Maintenance Unit at Leicester. Support is provided by Volvo Truck and Bus East Anglia’s dealerpoint at Bardon, who were also involved in the training and hand-over process.
FTA RESCUES TACHODISC FROM ADMINISTRATION
W
arrington-based tachograph equipment and compliance software provider Tachodisc Ltd has been acquired by TDUK Ltd, a subsidiary of the FTA, which stepped in to buy the business and “certain assets” after Tachodisc entered administration in April. TDUK has taken control of Tachodisc with immediate effect, and has charged FTA’s
director of operations, June Powell, with overseeing the business. The company will now trade under the new name TDUK Ltd. “Tachodisc fits well with FTA’s current services and operation, and this acquisition will help ensure the industry remains compliant,” said FTA chief executive, David Wells.

BRITISH TRUCK FLEETS CONTINUE TYRE TREND SHIFT
T
yre-maker Michelin has reported demand for truck tyres on the UK replacement market is continuing to show a steady shift to 315/70R22.5 fitments – driven by the growth of Euro 6 registrations and operators realising the total cost of ownership benefits offered over traditional low aspect ratio 295/80R22.5 tyres. The tyre manufacturer pointed to figures released by the European Tyre & Rubber Manufacturers Association which show the 295/80R22.5 – the long-time favourite of UK hauliers – has decreased its share of the UK's replacement market by three points since 2010. Meanwhile, over the same time scale, the 315/70R22.5 has increased its share by 3.4 points, and the 315/80R22.5 by 0.6 points. Michelin said this trend is strengthening year on year, with the 295/80 decreasing by one point between 2014 and 2015 and the 315/70 growing by 1.7 points – figures closely mirroring its own new tyre sales. “More and more operators are realising that moving to 315/70 tyres can reduce their running costs and open access to the very latest generations of products, which tend to be developed in this size first due to its popularity across Europe,” said Guy Heywood, commercial director of Michelin Tyres. “Our own surveys and trials we've carried out in conjunction with truck manufacturers have shown the benefits offered by 315/70 tyres – particularly in terms of fuel efficiency and tyre longevity. “Now operators are experiencing these
Michelin said 315/70R22.5 tyres are now the most popular replacement on UK fleets benefits in their own fleets too, it’s driving one of the most notable changes in tyre buying habits we’ve seen this side of the millennium,” he concluded.

Driving impressions
Virtually any driver would be more than happy to go to work in this truck. A Scania R580 LA6x2/4MNA Streamline, it has the superior V8 motor guaranteed to bring a smile to the face of even the most cynical truck driver. Although the interior colour isn’t to our taste (give us black any day), blue is a conservative choice and will have fairly wide appeal. The big Scania has a number of mod cons, not least of which are a coffee maker and microwave oven which come as part of Scania’s ‘Kitchenette’ package. What this truck is all about is the power and the technology. The big V8 has a growl to it that will keep the driver smiling, torque by the bucket load, the Scania GRS0905R transmission with Opticruise automated gear change system takes care of the gear changes and makes the driver’s life a lot less complicated, and the interior fit and finish is of a very high standard – with leather upholstery and a posh and comfy, wide, quilted bunk – all as you would expect from a high-end truck. As you drive the truck which, from the inside, is incredibly quiet, the Scania Driver Support system constantly monitors your performance and quite literally offers you advice via a ‘Driving Tips’ screen, with symbols and pictures that explain and illustrate what it is suggesting you do to improve your driving technique. Being a Scania, the truck has a real presence out on the road. Truckers approaching from the opposite direction pass admiring glances, while parked up in a lay-by to shoot some pictures of it, passing truckers were craning their necks to take a look at the big Scania. The technology here is fitted into a Scania Streamline, a truck designed and kitted out for maximum efficiency and productivity and first introduced with the original Scania Streamline

hill climbing, including use of gears, the accelerator pedal and vehicle momentum over varying topography, anticipation of numerous situations which are based on accelerations and decelerations and the interval between accelerating and braking, and the use of the brakes, harshness of braking (emergency or over-zealous braking) and use of the Scania Retarder and exhaust brake. Scania says its Scania Driver Support system extends the positive effects of driver training courses. It claims tests have shown Scania Driver Training can reduce fuel consumption by up to 10 per cent immediately, but when combined with use of its Scania Driver Support system, variation in fuel consumption is dramatically reduced from 15-20 per cent to around five per cent which indicates a far more consistent driving style.
T
he price of fuel may well have come down a little in recent weeks, but fuel still accounts for a major part of any transport company’s costs. So if drivers can be cosseted into treating a truck as their own (unless they are an owner-driver, in which case it will be their own), fuel savings and better mpg brought about by any ways or means can – and must – still be a target. Scania claims it has technology that can help drivers and operators achieve better mpg from their trucks, and it can also coach drivers into sharpening up their skills. The technology Scania is currently singing about is its Scania Driver Support system. It helps the driver get the best from the truck in a number of ways, including fuel consumption reductions through better driving technique. It also measures – in real time – anticipation, hill driving, choice of gears and braking. A driver’s anticipation is crucial in all driving situations. Approaching junctions and roundabouts, if the driver reads the road and gauges the situation with traffic ahead, he may be able to refrain from braking and, using the vehicle’s momentum, keep on the move. But there is more to being a good driver than that. A driver at the top of his profession will want to be smart, both in appearance and mentally, consistent in his technique, always turn in a good performance, take care of the truck and drive as economically as possible. But how does a good driver know he is retaining his hard-won skills? He can go for refresher courses, although time and cost will probably complicate things. There are some good DCPC courses that cover this area, but they are few and far between and are usually prohibitively expensive. So this is where the Scania Driver Support system can help. The system is standard on all Scania long-haul vehicles specified with a Scania retarder, a GRS gearbox and EBS. It constantly analyses data from sensors fitted in the vehicle and can help coach the driver and improve his performance. It gives the driver hints on how to improve, with tips and scores displayed in four categories in the instrument cluster. At the end of the shift, the accumulated score and overall assessment is shown and the driver (and/or operator) can gauge how well or otherwise he is performing. Among the measurements made are

back in 1991 – a redesigned 3-series given special attention to detail to aid smoother airflow around the truck and improve overall fuel efficiency.. The cab on the new version has smoother lines, a redesigned ‘wind cheater’ sun visor with integrated spot lights and aerodynamic aids that reduce wind resistance. Scania claims its Euro 6 engines will bring fuel savings of around two per cent alone, and a new Economy mode in its clever Opticruise cruise control (it also has power modes) can provide further fuel savings of between four and five per cent. With power, you need control – and drivers need to keep their driving standards in check. The Scania Driver Support system can do that. As it works in real time, drivers can use the technology to help them maintain high standards of driving, hone their skills while at work (no poring over books in their leisure time needed here!) and keep up their performance levels. Scania back-up has a legendary reputation for its response and effectiveness and it has a comprehensive dealership network that means you are never far from help should the worst happen. So all in all it’s a virtually perfect package!

FUTURE TRUCK COMP WINNERS PRAISED FOR INNOVATION
T
he winners of the Future Truck Design Awards have been revealed during a ceremony at the recent CV Show at the Birmingham NEC. The competition, organised in association with Transport for London (TfL), tasked budding designers from schools and universities to transform the traditional truck into a vehicle that’s even safer and smarter for deliveries in busy urban areas. The winning entrants took a variety of innovative approaches, which impressed the judging panel consisting of experts from industry and manufacturers, who said they saw the potential for many elements of the designs to be on the road in just a few years. “Our first Future Truck Design Awards
has been an incredible success,” said Ian Wainwright, head of TfL’s Freight and Fleet team. “We‘ve been overwhelmed by the quality, originality and innovation of the entries. “As London grows and becomes busier, we remain committed to improving road safety for all. By working with the industry they now recognise the safety of other roads users, as well as drivers and passengers, as a key part of the design process. “The Future Truck Design Awards has generated ideas that challenge the traditional look of the HGV, help inform future vehicle design and accelerate the process of building trucks specifically for safe, urban use,” he added. Winners were announced at the recent CV Show
Judges said they were impressed with the feasibility of winning entries
RANGE Ts RACE AHEAD FOR FORMULA 1 GRAND PRIX
The winning designs focused on alleviating a variety of challenges posed by traditional trucks. Visibility of other road users from the cab is a particular area for improvement, with entrants developing concepts such as rotating seats, all-round glass cabins and changing the position of the cab. The student designers also looked at ways of informing drivers of their situation without overwhelming them with data, such as computerised cyclist tracking that delivers tactile feedback through the steering wheel, and a communication system that uses the driver’s own sat nav to provide advance warning of manoeuvres to following motorists. The winners collected a variety of prizes, including work experience at Mercedes-Benz Trucks Special Projects Design Studio in Germany, a truck experience which includes discussion with Volvo design experts, a tour of the factory in the Sweden and the
opportunity to drive a truck, cash prizes and trophies. Winning entries were on display at the CV Show and will be exhibited at the Transport Museum in Covent Garden, London this summer.

RECYCLING OPERATOR TAKES ITS FIRST TGS TIPPERS
M
AN Truck & Bus has supplied four new TGS 35.400 8x4 tippers to Southampton-based Inert Recycling through the manufacturer’s Trucks To Go scheme. The vehicles were provided via MAN Rental and are on a full repair and maintenance contract. “We currently run a fleet of 25 tippers,” said Colin Donnelly, Inert transport manager. “Our MD, Keith Larner, felt the time was right to trial a new make of tipper to compare performance
against our existing fleet of 23 Mercedes. “The MANs were ready to go through the Trucks to Go scheme and we signed up for all four. They were on the road within weeks, and it has proved to be a very good deal for us.” The trucks will be servicing Inert Recycling’s landfill restoration business carrying inert soil to former landfill sites in the south of England. MAN’s Trucks To Go scheme enables operators to acquire ready-built trucks and bodies without the standard factory build lead times.
