COSGRAVE’S NEW RUBBER CUTS COSTS

IN-CAB CAM FIRM NAMES ITS DRIVER OF THE YEAR

D

Company MD Brian Cosgrave reckons Michelin tyres are proving cost-effective

L

imerick-based family-run container transport specialist Cosgrave Transport has adopted a Michelin tyre policy across its fleet of 27 trucks and 75 trailers after the performance of Michelin’s steer axle tyres impressed managing director Brian Cosgrave. Prior to switching to Michelin tyres, Limerick-based Cosgrave Transport fitted a range of well-known tyre brands, but found steer tyre wear so aggressive that tyres had to be turned on the rim every six weeks. In some cases, steer tyres supplied as original equipment suffered major shoulder wear after just six weeks in service. The firm said that when the first 315/80R22.5 Michelin XZE2+ test sets were fitted, tyre life rose significantly. Cosgrave turned the Michelin steer tyres on the rim just once during their first life in service, and they clocked up an impressive 220,000 km before being regrooved. “Our fleet undertakes a lot of regional work and the deteriorating condition of some of the older roads in Ireland really take their toll,” Brian Cosgrave said. “Pronounced cambers and ruts caused by years of trailers operating on super singles were causing

terrible premature tyre wear. It was pushing up our running costs and eating into valuable workshop hours. “The difference in performance since we started fitting Michelin replacement tyres has been incredible. We’re getting a very respectful mileage performance from the tyres and roadside downtime is a rare occurrence. As a result, we now fit Michelin products on all axles.” Cosgrave also specifies Michelin tyres as original equipment on new trucks and trailers joining the fleet. “It cost us €750 to have 385/65R22.5 XTE3 tyres fitted on each of our new Dennison trailers, but it’s worth it,” he said. “When you consider the total value of ownership we’ll unlock from each of these Michelin casings, it more than covers the additional cost.” Cosgrave Transport operates its own on-site workshop, where staff inflate tyres to bespoke pressures defined by Michelin for each vehicle type. The workshop team also ensure tyres follow the tyre-maker’s multiple lives policy, with the new X MultiWay 3D XZEs fitted on the steer axle, X MultiWay 3D XDE Remix tyres on the drive axle and Encore remoulds on trailers.

river safety and compliance solutions provider Lytx Europe Ltd has announced Ian Peters of DS Smith as the winner of its International Driver of the Year Award. Peters was selected as a result of his excellent driving behaviour, demonstrated while following Lytx’s DriveCam programme, which the firm said has helped him to become a safer driver. The DriveCam programme, which combines sophisticated data analytics with video review, allows commercial drivers and fleet managers to identify the root causes of risky driving among their fleets. The International Driver of the Year Award recognises drivers who have shown they are able to consistently operate their vehicle in a safe and responsible manner, demonstrating the fewest number of risky driving incidents that would indicate a requirement for coaching. DS Smith driver Peters, who has been a professional driver for 16 years, said the DriveCam programme helped him to become a safer driver and also demonstrate his professionalism to his employer. “DriveCam has given me a much greater awareness to situations that may arise or develop,” Peters said. “I’m now much more proactive, rather than reactive, in my driving style. I have been able to evolve and demonstrate my professionalism to my employer and my colleagues and feel safer as I do so.” Peters has worked for DS Smith for nine years, using the Lytx’ DriveCam programme for the last five. Lytx VP and general manager for Europe, Paul Jones, who presented the award to Peters, said: “Lytx congratulates Ian on this fantastic achievement. Our

DS Smith driver Ian Peters reckons the DriveCam system has made him safer behind the wheel goal is to make sure drivers always get home safely to their families and the level of safety Ian has achieved is a real testament to the DriveCam programme.” Peters added: “For drivers just about to embark on the DriveCam programme, I would say to treat the camera as your friend – it is there as much for you as it is for anybody else. You can learn from it and improve your professional techniques; I certainly have in the last five years. “I feel less stressed and fatigued through the way I now drive. A good example of how my style of driving has changed would be my approach to traffic lights. When I approach a light that is green, I will slow down to a speed that I can stop safely and without activating the camera if the light was to change to red. Ultimately, my approach is therefore safer.”

olvo dealer Crossroads Truck and Bus Limited in Rotherham has supplied what it believes are the first new series FH rigid/drawbars to go into service in the UK. The two 14-plate 6x4 double-drive configuration prime-movers have joined the 20-strong fleet of Sheffield-based Universal Recycling Company, which recently also put a 63-plate Volvo FMX 8x4 hooklift into service. The independent family-owned and managed business has operated Volvos for over 40 years. A lovingly refurbished 6x4, 1979 T-reg F7 rigid, driven by three generations of the Universal Recycling Company’s owners, points up the differences in size and overall specification compared to the latest Volvos. The F7 was defleeted 10 years ago and may be seen at shows in the future. The FHs, which are additional trucks in

the Universal Recycling Company fleet, were purchased in response to increasing demand for the Yorkshire company’s services. Coupled to drawbar trailers and operating at 44 tonnes, they will be used to collect and deliver recyclable materials from sites across the UK. ”Product quality, the spacious new FH cab and driver appeal were key to the company’s decision to invest in the new trucks,” said Universal’s director, John Hughes. ”The new trucks are on a five-year Repair and Maintenance contract with Crossroads and in terms of parts availability and dealer service, Volvo is the best in the country.” The FHs were specified with the 13-litre engine rated at 540 bhp and are fitted with Hyva hooklift equipment. The FMX is equipped with the 500 bhp version of the Euro 5-spec 13-litre engine, and is also fitted with a Hyva hooklift. Universal took its new FHs on a five-year R&M contract

The new Mercedes-Benz Actros premium long-haul tractor unit range was the star attraction for some of the North-West’s leading road transport operators, at a launch event staged by leading dealer Enza.

Held at the Oulton Park race circuit in Cheshire, the event gave invited guests their first chance to put the vehicle through its paces on UK roads. New Actros is the ultimate premium truck for longdistance transport. From the outset, designers and engineers were determined to provide the best possible comfort, driving dynamics, safety, productivity and operating economy, as well as a sweeping range of cab sizes, engine ratings and options, allowing customers to tailor vehicles perfectly for any application. The current Actros holds the Guinness World Record for fuel economy at 40 tonnes gvw, but road tests have shown the new model is seven per cent more frugal when specified to meet Euro 5 emissions regulations, while the ultra-clean Euro 6 version shows a four per cent improvement. The 81 guests took turns to head out on a 17-mile test drive, carefully chosen to simulate a variety of typical driving conditions. The route included single- and dualMark May reckons the new Mercedes-Benz Actros is ʻbrilliantʼ. carriageway roads. Each of the four demonstrator trucks provided for the event made 10 journeys - a total of almost 700 miles covered on the day. On each trip, the mpg figure achieved was recorded and at the end of the day the winner was Craig Stewart, logistics manager at Widnes-based Ray Stewart Haulage, who averaged an impressive 11.4 mpg in the 510 bhp V8-powered Actros 2551, and 11.8 mpg in the 450 bhp Actros 2545 model. Between journeys, guests also enjoyed ‘hot laps’ of the Oulton Park circuit in two-seater racing cars piloted by professional drivers. PERSONAL INJURY SPECIALISTS Transport manager Mark May of food waste and animal by-products recycling specialist John Pointon & Sons, summed up the feelings of many when he said: “It was a great day, very informative and enjoyable, and superbly organised. The new Actros is brilliant. The driving experience was fantastic and if the fuel performance figures are to be believed it will be an unbeatable all-round package. The previous Actros is a very good truck - but this new one is a huge step forward.”

Dyce DECLARES Actros its flexible friend

berdeen-based Dyce Carriers has taken delivery of five Mercedes-Benz New Actros tractor units with rangetopping GigaSpace cabs. Supplied by Mercedes-Benz Commercial Vehicles Aberdeen, all are 2551 models powered by 510 bhp straight-six engines driving through PowerShift automated transmissions. Dyce Carriers, which recently celebrated its 40th anniversary, has headquarters in Aberdeen and depots in Dalgety Bay, Fife, and Poole, Dorset. Its New Actros are on general haulage duties nationwide and represent additions to the company fleet, which now numbers 72 trucks, as well as a handful of vans and pick-ups. “We’ve had Actros tractors in the past and they’ve been good, solid performers - but the significant investments MercedesBenz Commercial Vehicles Aberdeen has been making to improve its facilities recently have convinced us the high-quality backup we demand is also in place,” said Dyce managing director, Jason Moir. “The dealer has given us all the assurances we could ask for about the level of service we’ll receive. “Our decisions on vehicle acquisitions are also heavily influenced by factors like value for money and image. The Mercedes-Benz Agility finance is very flexible and the rates highly competitive.” The Agility finance package offers similar benefits to a conventional hire purchase with

Flexible finance was key reason for Dyce taking five New Actros a Guaranteed Future Value (GFV), but gives operators extra options at the end of the term. The customer can choose whether to pay off the final lump sum and keep the vehicle, use the vehicle as a part exchange for a brand new one, or return it free of any further obligations, apart from an excess mileage charge if the initially agreed limit has been exceeded, and damage charges over

and above fair wear and tear. But as well as flexible finance, image was also a key consideration for Dyce. “The New Actros is a very striking piece of kit, with real presence on the road,” Moir said. “Ours have already attracted a lot of positive comments from customers and transport enthusiasts via our website, and the drivers’ comments have been extremely positive too.”

TGS tough it out in UAE

U

nited Arab Emirates-based construction company Saif Bin Darwish has bought 150 heavy MAN TGS 40.440 WW 6x4 tractor units in an order totalling more than €10 million. Saif Bin Darwish is one of the major civil and infrastructure engineering companies in UAE and has a long relationship of working with MAN. “We have trusted MAN for 35 years now and operate a fleet of 690 trucks,” said Andrew Carter, manager plant and rental division. “With the newly launched TGS WW 6x4 with Aero Package and TipMatic, we have rejuvenated our fleet to the latest standard.” Carter said the firm’s vehicles have to cope with very rough conditions and operate

on- and off-road, which means the company requires its trucks to be both robust and fuelefficient to achieve optimal performance. “Just last year we had three trucks crossing the one million kilometres mark with no major repairs over the last five years,” Carter added. “Because of this durability and reliability, we decided once again to invest in MAN trucks.” Saif Bin Darwish’s Operations Division is primarily responsible for equipment rental and transport. The main focus of its 690-truck fleet is to support the company’s projects and to provide material haulage services from the company-owned crusher in Fujairah to customers all over United Arab Emirates.

Pallet firm forks out for ‘perfect’ forklifts

uropean pallet network Palletways has switched to using Mitsubishi forklift trucks after breaking away from the longstanding forklift supplier which has serviced its Lichfield depot for the last 14 years. Last year, Palletways took the decision to source 60 GRENDIA LPG trucks and associated equipment from Jofson Mitsubishi – and a year on, the new trucks have proven so successful the switch could be copied at the firm’s other sites across the Continent. “After 14 years, it was a major decision to break away from our previous supplier,” said Palletways general manager, Dave Daniels. “Understandably, we were worried. But it was perfect. We couldn’t be happier.” The Mitsubishi GRENDIA model was selected following extensive testing and comparison of fuel economy and

short-shuttle performance against major competitors. An experienced Palletways forklift operator visited Jofson to finalise the trucks’ specification, with fingertip hydraulic controls and individual driver ID. Meanwhile, John Wright of Jofson created a bespoke service agreement to ensure the trucks would always deliver for Palletways’ intensive, round-the-clock operation. The GRENDIA forklifts came into their own over Christmas, when Palletways set new records for pallet movements in a single night. “We really put the trucks through their paces,” Daniels said. “Last night was fairly typical: we made 27,000 pallet movements. It’s incredibly hard work, 24 hours a day, six and a half days a week. I always say one year here is like five anywhere else, so a tough truck and great support are essential.”

Phil Carrick, Andy Murphy and Simon Beecroft undertook a cycling challenge in France as part of the L’Etape du Tour, an event which was first established in 1993 to allow amateur cyclists to test their legs on the route of one of the mountain stages in the Tour de France. This challenge, now in its 22nd year, has become the reference race for cyclosportive riders from all over the world. Phil, Andy and Simon joined a staggering 13,500 other entrants, riding in temperatures exceeding 30 degrees C, as they attempted to conquer the torturous climbs of the Tour, with the cycle challenge covering the last mountain stage of the 100th Tour de France. The course was a classic Alpine stage, taking in the climbs of the Cote du Puget (796 m), Col de Leschaux (944 m), Col des Pres

lugston Distribution, the logistics arm of the Clugston Group of companies, has announced a £2.15 million fleet expansion and renewal plan for 2014. The investment is part of the company’s strategy to develop its customer base across the UK by growing services in the fuels, bulk powdered food, intermodal and bulk ash movement markets, and follows a 20 per cent growth in revenue in 2013. The investment is being used to purchase 18 new Euro 6 Renault Range T tractor units and 14 new trailers. Clugston Distribution is also

looking to employ up to 13 new employees to support the company’s UK growth. “We are delighted the Clugston Board has chosen to support us further by backing our ambitious growth plans,” said David Heath, head of logistics at Clugston Distribution. “2013 was a great year for us and we are looking forward to continuing our success in 2014 and beyond. We are forecasting double-digit revenue growth again in 2014.” The new Euro 6 Renaults, which have already been ordered, will be split between fleet replacement and additional fleet capacity. The

nine additional vehicles are being split across different areas of the business to strengthen the overall operations. Clugston’s first two Euro 6 Renaults will be on the road in March delivering flour and other bulk food products. Four of the additional vehicles are being added to the bulk food powders operations and two to the industrial powder fleet, to support the company’s work with blue-chip cement manufacturers and ash producers. The remaining three will become part of the fuels fleet, taking the fleet strength of this operation

Over 10,600 of the original starting participants, including the three-man Paneltex team, finally completed the gruelling course – a record for the event. “As we approached the last climb with extremely tired legs, this was by far the hardest part of the course,” said Paneltex’s Phil Carrick. “But the support and sponsorship kept us all focused, knowing our cycle challenge was nothing compared to those who are unfortunate enough to need the services of Dove House Hospice.” The charity challenge is one of many undertaken over the years by staff at Paneltex and is part of the close association between the Hull manufacturer and Dove House Hospice. Dove House in Hull is a charity providing excellent care for people in the local community with life-limiting illnesses, and it is the only adult hospice in the area serving a population of 325,000. Clugston’s Range Ts will be used to transport flour and other bulk food products up to 16 vehicles on the Humber and Tees. Over the course of the last two years, Clugston Distribution’s workforce has grown by 40 people and the company has invested a total of £4 million on new vehicle assets. By the end of 2014, overall fleet numbers will be approaching 100 vehicles on the road.

Cappagh collects Canters for tipper ops

W

i mbledon-based civil engineering group Cappagh has ordered a new fleet of 7.5-tonne FUSO Canter tippers for use on its urban operations. The contractor, which said it had been won over by the Canter’s payload capacity, rugged durability and compact footprint, has taken delivery of 20 Canter 7C15s for use by tarmac gangs. “These vehicles are used to carry out utility work throughout the Greater London area,” said plant manager, John Gormley. “They transport debris away from site, while also bringing in tarmac and tools to complete the job. “The Canter is not too big, so relatively easy to manoeuvre in congested areas,” he added. “And at 3900 kg it will carry about half a tonne more than we’d get on a conventional 7.5-tonner, which represents a big win in terms of productivity.” The trucks were bought from MercedesBenz dealer Rygor, which is also responsible for sales and support of the popular FUSO light truck range. It took back 15 older Canters in part exchange, but Cappagh is

Arclid’s lean DAF makes the grade

C

heshire bulk tanker operator Arclid Transport has said it is pleased with its new weight-watching mid-lift axle DAF CF with ally wheels, which has resulted in a weight of just 7780 kg with a driver and half a tank of fuel. The firm said the combination of the lowweight CF tractor unit with an ally Feldbinder tanker means the outfit can achieve a payload of 28,300 kg at 44 tonnes gross weight. Around half a tonne is shaved off the weight of the CF by the use of 17.5 inch wheels on the lift axle, rather than the 22.5 inch wheels normally found on this type of 6x2. Further weight is saved by fitting Alcoa ally wheels – and the extensive use of ally in the 42 m3 tank also contributes to the low overall weight. “This is the first Euro 6 vehicle in our 25-strong fleet and I’m very pleased DAF has been able to provide us with a tractor unit that meets the new emissions standard, yet comes in at a very good weight,” said transport manager, Peter Conway. “As a result, and based on good experience since we first introduced this model in 2009, we’ve now made the FTP our standard when it comes to choosing tractor units. “We’ve also now adopted the practice of fitting the blowing and tipping equipment to the tank, rather than the tractor, and this brings several benefits,” he added. “It reduces the weight of the tractor, allows us to use the trailer with other tractors that are not fitted with a PTO, such as sub contractor vehicles,

Firm spec’d its new CF with weightsaving ally wheels and tank to boost payload

and cuts our fuel costs because we can use red diesel in the JCB donkey engine and there’s no idle running of the truck engine. Add to that the excellent payload we get from this configuration and we have a very productive and hopefully more profitable vehicle.” Conway said appearance is also important to the company, which led to the addition of skylights fared into the roofline, a roofmounted Kelsa lightbar with four spots and hazard beacons, extra lights above the fullwidth sun visor, and fog lights in the bumper. “With the tractor coming from the factory painted in our distinctive purple livery, we had only to add a white stripe and lettering to achieve a real head-turner of the truck that

presents a great image for our business,” Conway said. Based out of the firm’s headquarters at Arclid in Cheshire, the DAF and Feldbinder tank will be covering around 100,000 km a year delivering a range of products from sand to salt. Most work will be in the UK, but the company holds an international licence, so it can operate on the Continent. And Arclid’s TASCC registration brings added operational flexibility as it allows the Feldbinder tank to be used to carry food products as well as industrial materials. Arclid specified its new CF with Space Cab, DAF’s top-power 510 bhp MX-13 engine and a 12-speed AS-Tronic automated transmission.

urotunnel is celebrating the passage of its 20 millionth truck since services began on July 25, 1994. The milestone was reached on March 25, 2014 as a commercial vehicle made its journey through the rolling motorway on board a Freight Shuttle travelling from Coquelles, France to Folkestone. In 2013, the 15 Eurotunnel Freight Shuttles which operate 24/7, 365 days a year, carried almost 1.5 million trucks. The Freight Shuttle

service is used by more than 3000 major customers from every corner of Europe (including the Netherlands, Poland, Bulgaria and Slovakia), and makes 63,000 departures each year. The 20 millionth truck belongs to Emons Cargo BV – part of the Dutch Emons Group, which operates 160 modern 2WIN doubledeck vehicles. “We have used the Channel Tunnel since its opening 20 years ago,” said Eric Driessen,

commercial director of Emons Cargo BV. “We are frequent users and we are delighted and proud to have the 20 millionth truck to cross the Channel on board a Eurotunnel Shuttle. Jo Willacy, Eurotunnel commercial director, added: “We are especially pleased the 20 millionth truck to cross the Channel through the Tunnel is part of one of our earliest customer’s fleets. It is recognition of the professionalism of our employees and the quality of the service we provide.”

The two-year contract with Scania will see DFDS Seaways move an estimated weekly average of 75 truck chassis, produced in Scania’s largest factory in Zwolle, the Netherlands, which will be used in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The new contract comes in addition to the already existing shipment of truck chassis

on the freight routes from Rotterdam to Felixstowe and Immingham. The two routes will in total handle about 10,000 truck chassis per year. The contract is an extension of the operator’s current cooperation with Scania. DFDS Seaways already transports truck and bus chassis for Scania on the shipping routes between Gothenburg and Immingham, and on Gothenburg to Ghent. “We are very pleased with this new cooperation,” said Rob Olbertz, route director for the Rotterdam-Felixstowe route that offers three daily sailings per week in both directions. “It demonstrates DFDS Seaways’ reliability and high performance are recognised and appreciated by the customer.” Ferry operator DFDS Seaways will be shipping Scania truck chassis to the UK

etcalfe Plant of Penrith has invested in a pair of Thompsons Loadmaster bodies as part of its fleet renewal programme – with each having a specification finely tuned to a particular type of work. For general purpose tipping, the operator chose an all-steel Loadmaster Lite with single-skinned body, which it felt offered a combination of strength, durability and high carrying capacity. “We chose this version of Loadmaster for general, mixed traffic tipping, where loads are typically muck, stone and crushed recycled materials,” said company owner, Tony Metcalfe. “However, we needed an even stronger body for our really heavy work, such as site work and demolition. For these jobs, it had to be Loadmaster in ‘full spec’ – nothing else would really do.” The key differences of the maximumspecification Loadmaster over the Lite model are that it has an extra, full-length internal steel skin and is built with the addition of two front cornerposts. However, the Metcalfe specification goes a stage further by including Thompsons’ latest dual-purpose tailgate that enables easier load discharge. “By developing a really clever tailgate design that combines a conventional tophinged arrangement with an alternative ‘wide-open’ barn-door system, Thompsons has given us a body offering the greatest possible operating versatility,” Metcalfe said.

Metcalfe carefully spec’d its new Loadmaster tippers to suit their site work

“Really heavy, bulky loads such as demolition spoil, concrete and wire need a completely open body when tipping out. So with this tailgate and body combination, we have a truck that can load and tip absolutely anything.”

Mounted on 360 bhp Scania chassis and finished off with Harsh stabilised underfloor tipping gear, the new Loadmasters join Metcalfe’s large mixed fleet that includes low-loaders, tipper grabs, plant/machinery transporters and street cleaning vehicles.

berdeen-based Caledonian Logistics is taking delivery of 13 new MAN TGX 26.540 6x2 tractor units for its Aberdeen, Inverness and Cumbernauld locations. Most of the new 540 PS fleet replacements are already on the company’s high-mileage operation, which sees them covering over 350,000 km a year. Two units will be assigned to Cumbernauld for radial distribution work. All the vehicles are acquired on five-year Operating Leases through MAN Financial Services. Repair and maintenance will be carried out by MAN Truck & Bus Bellshill. “We invested £1.6 million in an MAN fleet two years ago, on a two-year Contract Hire package,” said the firm’s MD, Derek Mitchell. “Although the 440 PS units performed well, it was the two 540s that really stood out – so we have taken the decision to move up the power range for the majority of our premium duty tractor fleet. “Initial fuel economy looks to be favourable, although we expect productivity to improve further once the vehicles have ‘bedded-in’ in a month or two. “We have enjoyed fantastic service from MAN Truck & Bus Bellshill over the last

Caledonian said its new TGX fleet is delivering good fuel economy couple of years,” Mitchell added. “In the workshop, our trucks are turned round quickly and efficiently, and the MAN team always responds to our needs.”

Caledonian Logistics specialises in palletized freight distribution and is a member of Palletways and Partnerlink. The company was established in 1999 and now operates over 50 vehicles, including 40 maximum weight tractors, 18-tonne and 7.5-tonner rigids, alongside 14 ‘non-tacho’ vehicles.

TRL surveys drivers with diabetes

T

he Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) has announced it is investigating the experiences of UK fleet drivers who have Type 2 diabetes – especially those with Group 2 licences for lorries or buses. The study is exploring how professional drivers with Type 2 diabetes manage their condition, and looks at the effects of

certain medications on driving. According to TRL, there are close to three million people in the UK with Type 2 diabetes, and it is thought about 0.5 million of these drive for work – yet very little research has been carried out to support the needs of drivers with diabetes. TRL is asking all UK licenceholders with Type 2 diabetes who drive

professionally for work purposes to undertake an online survey, which takes about 20 minutes to complete. TRL said all responses will be kept anonymous, and drivers who finish the survey can enter a free prize draw – with first prize being £150. The survey can be found online at: www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/diabetes

HMRC continues illegal fuel crackdown

N

early 80 tonnes of toxic waste have been removed from farm buildings in South Armagh after the discovery of a large diesel laundering plant by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). HMRC officers and the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) searched a disused farm in the Cullyhanna area in March. The laundering plant, capable of producing around 24 million litres of illicit fuel and evading almost £15 million in lost duty and taxes every year, was dismantled and the waste safely removed. “The volume of toxic waste we uncovered at this laundering plant is staggering and shows the total disregard these criminals have for the environment,” said Mike Parkinson, assistant director, criminal investigation, HMRC. “We have also stopped a large amount of illicit fuel entering the legitimate market, preventing further revenue loss and helping legitimate traders fight unfair competition.” In unrelated activity, a 24-year-old man from Antrim was arrested after HMRC accompanied by PSNI raided a filling station in the Antrim area on Monday, March 24. Officers discovered a van with concealed tanks delivering over 2000 litres of suspected

Periodic Driver CPC Training from Mercedes-Benz real training, not box ticking. Officials said the amount of toxic waste at the illegal fuel factory was “staggering” illegal fuel. Forecourt pumps, an underground storage tank, business records and a small quantity of cash were also seized during the operation. The man from Antrim was questioned by HMRC officers and has been released on bail. And on Friday, March 21, HMRC seized a 40 ft trailer during an operation in South Armagh. A search of the trailer revealed a large 33,000 litre fuel tank thought to be used to covertly transport illegal fuel in an attempt to avoid detection. Investigations are continuing.

Leyland plant marks manufacturing milestone

T

he 5000th DAF truck to be both built and bodied in-house at Leyland Trucks was handed over to Royal Mail at an event on Friday, March 28 at the company’s assembly plant in Lancashire. The DAF LF 7.5-tonne model will be one of the first Euro 6-compliant trucks in the Royal Mail fleet and is the latest of more than 700 PACCAR-bodied vehicles which have been supplied to the UK’s postal service. Paul Gatti, director of fleet and maintenance services, and Rob Cooksley, procurement director - vehicles, assets and logistics at Royal Mail, received the truck from Ron Augustyn, managing director of Leyland Trucks and DAF Trucks UK managing director Ray Ashworth. Leyland Truck’s in-house bodybuilding capability, which is unique amongst major European truck manufacturers, gives DAF the ability to offer customers a complete vehicle which fully complies with EC Whole Vehicle Type Approval (WVTA) regulations. These came into effect last year for vehicle manufacturers, but will not apply to the vehicle bodybuilding industry until October. As a result of meeting these regulations, DAF LF vehicles equipped with PACCAR bodies built exclusively in the UK by Leyland Trucks are now being sold in all EU member

Royal Mail LF was 5000th built-and-bodied DAF to roll off Leyland Trucks’ production line states without the need to meet regulations in individual countries. Outside the UK, the body being sold is the advanced aerodynamic Aerobody, which is designed to enhance fuel consumption and is also available in the UK. According to DAF, the Aerobody has shown fuel savings of five per cent in real operating conditions and up to eight per cent when the vehicle is running at normal cruising speed of 53 mph compared to a conventional body. “Our ability to produce PACCAR bodies in-house can significantly reduce delivery lead times,” said Ron Augustyn, Leyland Trucks managing director. “From the first part of the production process, where we assemble the truck chassis, to a finished vehicle coming off the line fully bodied, painted, lettered and ready for the road can take as little as 24 hours. “In the case of the trucks we are building and bodying for Royal Mail, we complete the vehicle, livery it, organise its registration and taxation and deliver it direct to a designated depot where it immediately enters service.” The vehicle being handed over to Royal Mail is a 7.5-tonne LF fitted with a 5.15 m long box body and a cantilever tail-lift. Power is from a 4.5-litre, four-cylinder PACCAR PX-5 Euro 6 engine rated at 152 bhp.

Cramplings’ Atego lifts linen

O

ne of the first new-generation Mercedes-Benz Atego light distribution trucks to hit UK roads is now hard at work in the colours of Great Yarmouthbased commercial laundry, Camplings Linen Services. Camplings’ truck is a 12-tonne Atego 1223 with ClassicSpace day cab. It arrived via the Norwich branch of East Anglian dealer Orwell Truck & Van and is the subject of a CharterWay contract hire agreement from Mercedes-Benz Financial Services. A long-standing Mercedes-Benz operator, Camplings runs a combined fleet of 14 trucks with sister business Swiss Laundry, of Cambridge. Most are 7.5-tonners, although the line-up also includes an 18-tonne Axor downplated to 15 tonnes, while Orwell is currently processing an order for a second – this time a Euro 6 Antos model. “Growing demand for our service has meant we’ve started to increase carrying capacity, and our latest 12-tonne Atego has replaced another 7.5-tonner,” said logistics

director, Paul Edleston. “We’ll be changing more of the smaller vehicles over time, but will have to retain a few, because access to some customer locations is restricted and we would struggle to get bigger vehicles in. “Our latest, low-emission Atego complements perfectly the culture and environmental strategy of our business; we take this issue very seriously and strive constantly to reduce water and power consumption at our factories.” The new truck has a 231 bhp Euro 6 engine which drives through a six-speed PowerShift 3 automated transmission. It is now collecting and delivering laundry for customers including hotels, restaurants and holiday parks throughout East Anglia. The truck’s purpose-designed laundry body is the work of GK Harvey Coachbuilders of Attleborough, Norfolk, and features a sideloading door, specialist racking and a 1000 kg Ratcliff column tail-lift with safety gates and hinged side-loading ramps for handling roll-on containers.

Cool trailers take AIM for Euro market

E

vesham-based UK and European temperature controlled and container shipping specialist A.I.M. Logistics has expanded its 50-strong vehicle fleet with the addition of three Cool Liners from Krone. Established in 2004 with just two vehicles, A.I.M. Logistics has grown rapidly and said it has ambitious plans for further development on an international scale. In addition to its traditional UK work, the company provides an end-to-end cold chain logistics service, including ambient frozen palletised loads, to customers in France, Belgium and Holland.

Company director, Ismail Elmagdoub, said A.I.M. Logistics is expecting to experience low running costs and an eventual high residual value for the Cool Liners – and to maintain a high-quality service, his company depends on a high standard of equipment. Accordingly, when making further moves onto the Continent, it was important the company selected trailers with a full European specification. “These trailers fit well with our commercial plan and are well proven in the European market,” he said. AIM Logistics’ new Cool Liner trailers are spec’d to operate on the Continent

Volvo Trucks has lifted the lid on its all-new FH series of heavy trucks, designed with the driver in mind and a focus on fuel economy.

Details were scarce when we went to press ahead of the official launch on September 5, but the Swedish manufacturer told Truckstop News the new FHs will be available in both Euro 5 and 6 form, and pack a vast amount of upgrades and improvements. Leading the charge for fuel efficiency is Volvoʼs new I-See function (Truckstop News, issue 301). The system, which works alongside the I-Shift automated transmission, is claimed to cut consumption by five per cent by storing information about the route the truck drives along. “The next time the truck uses the same route, I-See operates the accelerator, gears and brakes to ensure progress is as economical as possible,” said Claes Nilsson, president, Volvo Truck Corporation. An additional five per cent saving in fuel use is possible with Volvo Trucksʼ new Fuel Package. This package encompasses training and monthly assistance – Fuel Advice – and its aim is to cut fuel costs by changing driving styles and increasing knowledge of how to drive for maximum fuel-efficiency. Volvoʼs new I-Torque Euro 6 driveline – production of which for the European market will get under way in autumn 2013 – should make for additional fuel savings. “ITorque reduces fuel consumption by up to With its new Volvo FH series, Volvo is ʻpushing four the envelopeʼ in re-defining what a premium per cent. Together with I-See and other minor truck can offer. improvements, the result is fuel consumption can drop by up to 10 per cent. For the average truck, this can equate to a saving of up to 4100 litres of fuel a year,” Nilsson continued. On-road manners have received much attention, and Volvo is claiming the new trucks offer exceptional handling thatʼs much like a car. “To put things into perspective, we can even offer independent front suspension, although initially only on left-hand drive vehicles. This world-first takes handling to unsurpassed levels in the truck world,” Nilsson said.

Also of benefit to drivers are improved seats and driving position, optimised to provide a better view of the road. This is aided by an increase in the cabʼs usable window area and an innovative slimmer rear-view mirror design. Stalks and controls are arranged in priority so the most important ones are now closest to the driver, and the steering wheel now has a neck tilt function – another world-first in the truck world. Safety is high on the agenda, An all-new cab structure features more upright A-pillars, which give the cab an additional 1 m3 of interior space. This means an extra 300 litres (10.5 cu ft) of storage capacity, as well as greater comfort on board.“The cab is optimised both for work and leisure time,” Nilsson said. “A better bed, integrated parking cooler, new lighting and low noise levels among other features, all increase the chance of pleasant relaxation and a good nightʼs sleep, which in turn means drivers are less tired and more alert.” Production of the Volvo FH will start in spring 2013 for the European market.

DRIVER FIRST-AID INITIATIVE GAINS MEDICAL INDUSTRY BACKING

river First Assist, a road safety initiative which seeks to reduce road fatalities through incident firston-scene training, has announced it has earned the support of The Faculty of PreHospital Care (FPHC) of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Pre-Hospital Care is a branch of medicine provided by the ambulance service, doctors and nurses. The aim of the FPHC is to unite the various groups involved in pre-hospital care and set and maintain clinical standards through promotion and education of the speciality. “Pre-hospital care is a vital part of managing the aftermath of an RTC, and having DFA-trained volunteers to begin the care before the arrival of the ambulance could significantly increase the chance of survival of those critically injured,” said Dr Colville Laird, chairman of the Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care. “We are pleased to be supporting the initiative. We believe it’s a revolutionary idea which has the potential to save the lives of many and assist our emergency services, with hundreds - and hopefully soon even thousands - of volunteers who are trained to provide an immediate response,” he added. Launched last year, Driver First Assist (DFA) said it is aiming to almost halve the number of deaths caused by road traffic collisions by training professional drivers to provide emergency first aid before the arrival of the emergency services. The DFA courses are run by current and recently retired members of the emergency services, who use their experience to teach participants

how to manage the scene of an RTC in the first critical minutes. DFA said over half of RTC deaths occur before the arrival of the emergency services, a large number of which are caused by a blocked airway. Death from a blocked airway can occur in just four minutes, which is currently half the target response time for ambulances in the UK. DFA specifically targets professional drivers who are most likely to come across an RTC and are therefore best placed to help prevent road side deaths where an immediate or quick response is critical. David Higginbottom, founder of Driver First Assist, said: “We’re delighted to receive the support of the Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care. Having such a well-valued organisation supporting us will help promote our initiative to a wider audience and highlight the requirement for trained volunteers to assist in the first stages of an RTC.”

MODEL MAN MAKES CV SHOW DEBUT

igital tachograph hardware and software provider Tachosys has revealed its latest commercial vehicle project - a replica MAN TGX model truck fitted with an ECU, digital tacho, tracking and Driver Decision Support (DDS). Tachosys has built its 1/14th scale TGX to include fully working electrics and three forward/reverse gears – but it does not end there, as the company went on to develop a proprietary and fully featured vehicle ECU with CANbus. This in turn is connected to a latest model Stoneridge Exakt digital tachograph. Tachosys said the speed for the tachograph is accurately picked up from its mated sensor, which has undergone full workshop calibration. The model behaves just like the real thing and is operated by use of a custom Android app which can control a vast range of driving functions and ancillaries, such as lights and indicators. The model is designed to show off the capabilities of Tachosys’ next generation digital download tools, which offer functions including vehicle tracking, FMS monitoring, bluetooth connectivity and both analogue and digital inputs. The Tachosys TGX is fitted with a digiDL-ex, which will allow it in real-time to remotely download tachograph data, provide GPS co-ordinates, measure

KBC BACKS LICENCE CHECKS AFTER NEAR-MISS

T Tachosys built the high-tech model to help explain the principles behind its digital tacho tools fuel usage, power and speed; feedback tachograph mode changes and DDS data; and provide bluetooth support for Android tablets or phones. The high-tech model truck will be on display at the CV Show, where data from the vehicle will be fed back to a web-based server, and the results will be passed live to a large screen behind the vehicle for show-goers to see. Tachosys’ technical director and principal, Ian Frost, said: “This started as a small project to show off Remote Download and our enhanced capabilities at the CV Show, but inevitably it turned into something considerably more. “I won’t ever calculate the cost as it would be simply scary, but I feel confident it will be a great way to convey all the principles.”

ransport services company KBC Logistics has signed up to Licence Bureau’s licence-checking service after nearly finding out the hard way the consequences of not ensuring compliance. After previously checking driving licences and counterparts every six months, KBC Logistics transport and compliance manager Dave Ashford received a knock on the door from two CIDs and two traffic collision investigation officers last June. On June 9, one of KBC’s drivers had been involved in an accident in his private car and the Essex-based haulier was subsequently notified the driver was disqualified. The driver’s licence had been manually checked in November 2012, but unaware to Ashford, he had been subsequently disqualified in March 2013. Fortunately, the driver was being used on shunting duties and did not drive a truck on public roads. Ashford could have faced notable penalties for both himself and the company if the accident had happened at the wheel of a KBC truck. “Even though on this occasion I had fulfilled my obligation, it was a scary prospect to think this could have been any one of my operational drivers and it identified a flaw in my systems,” Ashford said. “I have since signed up to Licence

Bureau. I chose them because they proactively notify me if there is an issue with any of my drivers, and they also include skeletal records for non-UK licence-holders. “Just recently I had a call from them telling me one of my drivers with a Polish licence possesses a UK counterpart with six points,” he added. “I would have no way of knowing this unless the driver had informed me. Not surprisingly, he hadn’t!”

Held at the Oulton Park race circuit in Cheshire, the event gave invited guests their first chance to put the vehicle through its paces on UK roads. New Actros is the ultimate premium truck for longdistance transport. From the outset, designers and ADVERTORIAL engineers were determined to provide the best possible comfort, driving dynamics, safety, productivity and operating economy, as well as a sweeping range of cab sizes, engine ratings and options, allowing customers to tailor vehicles perfectly for any application. The current Actros holds the Guinness World Record for fuel economy at 40 tonnes gvw, but road tests have shown the new model is seven per cent more frugal when specified to meet Euro 5 emissions regulations, while the ultra-clean Euro 6 version shows a four per cent improvement. The 81 guests took turns to head out on a 17-mile test drive, carefully chosen to simulate a variety of typical driving conditions. using mobile phones while driving

Parliament has recognised the inherent dangers caused by drivers of motor vehicles when using mobile telephones while driving and brought forward specific legislation. There has been an unacceptable increase in the number of vocational licence holders using mobile telephones without a hands free device while driving large goods and passenger carrying vehicles. This practice is unacceptable and presents an undue risk to road safety. Studies have indicated that even the use of hands-free devices can distract a driver to the extent that they may be prevented from applying the requisite care and attention. A report for an offence received from an enforcement agency that a vocational driver has used their mobile telephone while driving without a hands free device in the last three years will result in that driver being called to a hearing before the traffic commissioner. Each case will be decided on its own facts and merits and the presiding traffic commissioner will be keen to ascertain the reason the driver is engaged in the telephone call. In cases where drivers are speaking with their employers or their customers, the traffic commissioner may consider the effect this might have upon the operator’s repute”. So you are likely to be called to a hearing in order to show cause why an order should not be made. The guidelines which a traffic commissioner will be considering are to suspend vocational entitlement for 14 days, 21 days if driving a commercial vehicle, to commence with immediate effect. For a second and/or subsequent offence to multiply accordingly, for example, second offence in a commercial vehicle 2 x 21 days.

I have recently received a number of enquiries from agency workers asking what sort of protection or employment rights they have. So this month I thought it would be useful to look in some detail at the position of agency workers and what rights and protection they have. Starting at the beginning, a agency worker signs up with an employment agency to work for one or more of their clients. They often undertake specific pieces of work or are engaged for a fixed period; their work is therefore usually temporary. However, agency workers can be engaged on an open-ended basis and engagements do not have to be short term. They may last for some time, depending on the needs of the client to which they have been assigned by the employment business. A summary of some of the main rights of agency workers is below. The Agency Workers Regulations 2010 which came into force on 01 October 2011 and introduced new rights for agency workers, including: 1. The right to the same pay and other “basic working conditions” as equivalent permanent staff after a 12week qualifying period. 2. Access to collective facilities and to information about employment vacancies from day one of their assignment. A summary of the claims an agency worker can bring under the Agency Workers Regulations 2010 are as follows: For those agency workers who are employees,

One of the offences some drivers have committed is using a mobile phone while driving. The legislation defines this offence as follows: No person is to drive a motor vehicle on a road if he is using a hand-held mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind. No person is to cause or permit any other person to drive a motor vehicle on a road while that other person is using a handheld mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind. No person is to supervise a holder of a provisional licence if the person supervising is using a hand-held mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind at a time when the provisional licence holder is driving a motor vehicle on a road.

RUN FOR LIFE

I’m looking for help to raise awareness to my charity event. I’m am truck driver, one of the growing number of females doing this job, and I am looking to run a marathon of 26 miles to raise funds and awareness for prostrate cancer. I decided on this cause because of working in a male-dominated industry, and my stepdad has also been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

I’m hoping fellow drivers will get behind me and offer support – and possibly sponsor me! I’d be grateful if you could share my Facebook page (www.facebook. com/amandathon19072014), and also print a link to my Just Giving page (www. justgiving.com/amandathon19072014), where people can go to sponsor me. Men need to be aware of their prostate and should keep an eye out for any signs of

The writer of our Star Letter will win a fantastic Scania R-series tractor unit with tri-axle curtainsider trailer in the colours of NG Bell & Son Ltd of Newtownards, Northern Ireland worth £84.99!

A FITTING TRIBUTE Sadly we lost our Dad to cancer earlier this month. He was a life long truck driver and an avid reader of your paper. We wondered if you would consider running a short piece which would be such a fitting tribute to one of life’s greats. For his final journey he was fittingly

of roping and sheeting, taking fresh produce to London markets, through to carrying plant and machinery. He even had time to move the odd multi million pound yacht. For his final journey, it seemed perfectly fitting to be conveyed to his final resting place on the back of his own truck. The last load of a dying breed of driver. Emma Coles, by email

DUTCH DEADLINE

I have just heard that the Dutch government has extended the Driver CPC deadline by two years. For the sake of fair competition, is the UK government going to do the same? Please could you put this out to your readers for their attention to this matter, so maybe they can petition their MPs if we are still being held to ransom by having to complete it by September this year? BOOK Scania Trucks 3

Author: Felix Jacoby Publisher: Wieland Verlag GMBH / Nynehead Books ISBN: 978-3-938711-70-5 Web: www.nynehead-books.co.uk Price: £28.50 Rating: «««««

Marking the third volume in this occasional series, freelance road transport journalist Felix Jacoby has scoured Europe to compile a compendium of some of the most impressively customised Scania commercial vehicles.

RESTO REQUEST

To be the most successful model, hobby and collectable toy company in the world

conveyed eight miles from Exeter to Crediton in Devon on the back of his own truck to his final resting place. Ken James was what they call one of the ‘old school’ truck drivers. He had spent his entire working life on the road driving trucks, a job that he took great pride in. After over 40 years in the industry, he saw great diversity and change. From the early days

The A4-format hardback book is full colour throughout which is just as well, as the photography is first-class. The book is divided into chapters covering a range of subjects, including Griffins at work in the Alps, five-axle outfits from the Netherlands, four-axle models, trucks pulling heavy machinery, Swiss cable-car service vehicles, German dumptrucks, bonneted fleets, vintage commercials and more. Offering over 400 colour photographs and dual German/English text, this 160page tome makes for a fine celebration of some of the most impressive Scania outfits on Continental roads.

This four-DVD boxset comprises four distinct programmes that celebrate some of the UK’s most enduring classic commercials. Volume one offers a mix of vehicle explorations, including a Leyland Comet mine-rescue vehicle, a 1926 Model T Ford lorry, 1934 Sentinel steam wagon and a Scammell Highwayman. Volumes two, three and four are tours

We are currently restoring a MercedesBenz 1936 V10 1988 twin bunk truck. The vehicle is an E-reg, and I was wondering if you or any readers would have any pictures of this type of commercial vehicle from back in the day that show what they used to look like brand-new? The Merc 1936 V10 model wasn’t available in England. The sister model to this was the Merc 1635. I have attached a picture of ours, so you can see what it looks like. Mark Allsop, by email Thanks for your email, Mark. We can’t put our hands on any relevant pictures in our archive, so we’ll put the call out to readers – if any of you can help Mark out with an image or two of a 1988 MercedesBenz 1936 V10 truck in good condition, please email them in to the usual address and we’ll forward them on to Mark –Ed.

TRAIN TO GAIN?

I am a professional LGV driver with 44 years’ experience, and although I would like to carry on for a few more years, I will not be taking my Driver CPC for the following reasons. I work for an agency, but work exclusively for one employer – a large fleet operator with a superb safety record and on-site workshop. In my time I have

of the best trucks at the such events as the Abergavenny Steam Rally, Bromyard Gala, the Bovington Military Vehicle Rally and more. Good stuff.

Audiobook The Book Thief

Author: Markus Zusak Read by: Allan Corduner Runtime: 14 hours Publisher: Random House Books Web: www.audible.co.uk Price: £17.99 (digital download) Rating: «««««

The Book Thief isn’t your typical World War Two story. Set in 1939 against a frigid Nazi Germany backdrop, its narrator chronicles the childhood of orphan girl and book-stealer Liesel Meminger, who is sent to live with foster parents Hans and

done multi-drop, long-distance and night trunking and shunting, and rope-and-sheet work for many employers, most of them household names. At present, I drive wagon-and-drag and artics to London shops, which demands a high level of concentration – especially now there are so many more cyclists whose sole purpose in life seems to be throwing themselves under my wheels. Of course, this self-righteous bunch of lawbreakers are not required to take any test or carry insurance, but are very quick to point the finger at the lorry driver when things go wrong. Another bone of contention for me is the insistence by the authorities on calling us professionals when we must be the only group of people who work for just above the minimum wage, risking ridiculously high fines as well as our licences. I read your article in the Spring issue regarding vehicle checks with the thought of how many more times have I got to hear this, having had assessment after assessment by a multitude of highly respected firms. My current employer, for whom I’ve worked for six years, assesses all of its drivers regularly and demands very high standards. The vehicles are fitted with FleetBoard telematics systems and bad driving is not tolerated. I dare say I could improve my driving, but in all my years I have never had the sack and have held a clean licence since 1983. For the few years I would like to work, I am not prepared to take my Driver CPC as I consider it to be another back-door tax. The proof of this is the driver can sit the same module five times to qualify. The only requirement on the driver is to attend the course, and does not have to prove he has learned anything. In short, it’s a joke. Brian Diprose By email

Rosa Hubermann. What’s unique is that we’re given a different perspective on a well-documented event – we see war from the side of a struggling German family only just surviving under Hitler’s rule. Liesel soon finds a companion in neighbour Rudy Steiner, and later an unlikely ally in Max Vandenburg, a Jewish man the Hubermanns let hide in their cellar. But it’s the narrator, Death, voiced by Allan Corduner, that really sets this one apart. Zusak uses a risky motif, but he pulls it off with ease. Corduner’s gravelly tones and effortless delivery work wonderfully with the serious subject matter, though that’s not to say The Book Thief doesn’t have its light, quirky moments.

95% of LGV drivers find our CAR insurance cheaper* What our LGV driver customers are saying:

I saved £264 on my car insurance, so I’m very pleased and Adelaide was also able to protect my No Claims Bonus.

Mr I. Leadbetter

My wife actually discovered Adelaide on the internet and suggested I try Adelaide for a car insurance quote as they look after LGV drivers. I happened to be finishing my CPC exam at the time and mentioned it to the trainer who said he’d not heard of this before. After insuring my car with Adelaide I was delighted to inform the trainer that this was a bona fide offer which he can recommend to the other drivers he trains.

Mr T. Horton

I was very happy with the car insurance price from Adelaide and also informed my Transport Manager to get the word out so that the other drivers in our company can benefit from this offer.

Mr A. Smith

” ”

I made a very good saving on my car insurance with Adelaide and as a result put up a poster at work to promote this unique service to the other 200 drivers in the company.

Mr S. McCarthy

Adelaide was voted the UK’s No.1 insurer for value-formoney in Auto Express Driver Power surveys 2012 & 2013
