TRUCKSTOP NEWS
ISSUE 327 AUGUST 2014
McBURNEY BURNEY CAPTURES GOLDEN GRIFFIN N orthern Ireland transport operator McBurney Transport has placed an order for a Scania Golden Griffin – the Limited Edition flagship truck being produced by Scania to celebrate its first 50 years in the UK. Ballymena-based McBurney Transport will celebrate its own golden jubilee in 2015, and to commemorate the occasion has opted for Golden Griffin number 50 from the Scania anniversary range, which is limited to just 50 examples. “I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate my own 50 years in business than by buying Golden Griffin number 50,” said McBurney Transport’s managing director, Norman McBurney OBE. “It is now more than four decades since I purchased my first Scania, and over the years the marque has played an important role with our fleet. “I would like to congratulate Scania on reaching its own UK half century and now look forward to celebrating our own 50th anniversary.”
Supplied by Road Trucks Ltd, Scania’s Larne-based dealer for Northern Ireland, the Golden Griffin model chosen by McBurney Transport is an R730 LA 6x2/2MNA Topline tractor unit equipped with a Scania DSC16 -21 Euro 6 engine, which delivers 730 bhp at 1900 rpm and 3500 Nm of torque between 1000-1350 rpm. Every Golden Griffin model comes with Scania’s luxury Griffin pack and an array of extras, ranging from a kitchenette to a TV/ DVD player. In addition, three luxury Scania packages – Black Leather V8, Prestige and Driver – are also fitted. All Golden Griffins will also feature a range of active and passive safety features, including Lane Departure Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control and Advanced Emergency Braking, and each truck will be equipped with a stateof-the-art entertainment system. McBurney ordered Golden Griffin number 50 to help celebrate its golden jubilee next year
FERRYSPEED CHAMPIONS CHANNEL ISLAND DAFS
F
our new DAF LF220 16-tonne trucks with Gray & Adams refrigerated bodies are the first Euro 6-compliant models to join the Ferryspeed fleet of 75 vehicles in the Channel Islands – and are already delivering fresh and frozen food from the port to hotels, supermarkets and wholesalers across Jersey and Guernsey. The vehicles are believed to be the first Euro 6 trucks on the islands, and are expected to be serviced and maintained by the DAF Service Dealer based in St Saviour, Jersey. Ferryspeed, which specialises in commercial freight to and from the Channel Islands, already has an extensive fleet of over 40 DAF trucks on the UK mainland and chose the new DAF LF for its fleet based in Jersey and Guernsey as it said it is the most efficient size for onward distribution from the port. Restrictions of large vehicle movements on the islands mean Ferryspeed’s larger trucks must stay within the immediate port areas when offloading from the mainland. The size of the islands and relatively limited road infrastructure means the annual mileage of the four new DAF LFs will never be substantial, however they will be kept
constantly busy – especially during the peak holiday season from April to September, when demand for chilled and frozen foods soars to meet the influx of visitors. The lower Euro 6 emissions, improved fuel economy and flexible engines of the new DAF LF make it a good fit for the regular drop-offs and shorter trips in a typical day’s use around the islands, the firm said. Reliability and refrigerated bodies are also crucial for Ferryspeed as it has to comply with the strict requirements of the Food Safety Act and HACCP guidelines, and is audited regularly. In addition, many of its customers also have their own requirements that Ferryspeed must comply with. Ferryspeed managing director Stan Markland said: “We are delighted to add the new DAF LF to our fleet on the Channel Islands as we know from previous experience it will do the job effectively and efficiently.” The Gray & Adams refrigerated bodies have the latest Frigoblock cooler units, while the new DAF LF chassis cabs, supplied by DAF dealer Adams Morey in Portsmouth, are distinguished by the new exterior and interior design. They are powered by DAF’s latest sixcylinder 6.7-litre PACCAR PX-7 engine rated at 220 bhp with 850 Nm of torque.
WEST COUNTRY HOOKS INTO GAS
E
uropean liquefied gas fuel supplier Gasrec has launched a new ‘open access’ bio-LNG filling station in the South West, at Junction 24 of the M5 - marking the first such station to be brought online in the West Country. The new low-emission facility is part of Gasrec’s growing national network and will initially supply around 30 trucks run by a number of the firm’s existing customers. Owing to the station’s strategic location, Gasrec said it anticipates strong interest from its existing and other retail and distribution customers using the M5 to access businesses in the South West. The facility is intended to help HGV fleet operators cut fuel and pollution costs and assist the government to meet long-term carbon reduction targets and improve air quality, particularly through the reduction in harmful SOx, NOx and particulate matter emissions. The Bridgewater site will be a state-of-theart pumped LNG filling station, supplying the company’s proprietary low-emission bio-LNG fuel. The flexible and modular facility will have the capacity to supply up to 80 vehicles per day, although it will ultimately be expanded to replicate Gasrec’s Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal near the M1, which is now capable of fuelling up to 700 gas vehicles daily.
“We are very pleased to have the support of a number of our customers as we open the West Country’s first bio-LNG filling station,” said Ben Sawford, Gasrec’s chief commercial officer. “Many transport fleet operators recognise the need to make substantial cuts in their emissions. While HGVs only represent one per cent of UK road vehicles, they produce a disproportionate 20 per cent of carbon emissions from UK road transport and a significantly higher proportion of the more dangerous particulate matter and other noxious elements. “As news of this West Country facility grows, I am confident many other retail and distribution businesses will see the benefit its location brings in terms of extending the reach of gas-powered HGVs accessing the region and through into Devon and Cornwall.” Gasrec said it is working closely with retail and distribution customers to develop a network of bio-LNG filling stations across the UK. As the infrastructure grows, the firm hopes it will provide businesses with the confidence to significantly increase their use of low-emission bio-LNG for deliveries across the country. Last year, the company secured European funding through the TEN-T programme to develop five ‘open-access’ stations in the UK by the end of 2015 - and two mobile stations in continental Europe. Held at the Oulton Park race circuit in Cheshire, the event gave invited guests their first chance to put the vehicle through its paces on UK roads. New Actros is the ultimate premium truck for longdistance transport. From the outset, designers and engineers were determined to provide the best possible comfort, driving dynamics, safety, productivity and operating economy, as well as a sweeping range of cab sizes, engine ratings and options, allowing customers to tailor vehicles perfectly for any application. The current Actros holds the Guinness World Record for fuel economy at 40 tonnes gvw, but road tests have shown the new model is seven per cent more frugal when specified to meet Euro 5 emissions regulations, while the ultra-clean Euro 6 version shows a four per cent improvement. The 81 guests took turns to head out on a 17-mile test drive, carefully chosen to simulate a variety of typical driving conditions. Each of the four demonstrator trucks provided for the event made 10 journeys - a total of almost 700 miles covered on the day. On each trip, the mpg figure achieved was recorded and at the end of the day the winner was Craig Stewart, logistics manager at Widnes-based Ray Stewart Haulage, who averaged an impressive 11.4 mpg in the 510 bhp V8-powered Actros 2551, and 11.8 mpg in the 450 bhp Actros 2545 model. Royal Mail courts Sunday deliveries
R
oyal Mail has said it is gearing up to trial Sunday parcel deliveries later this summer to addresses within the M25 motorway in a move that comes only a days after rival parcel delivery firm DPD announced its plans to become the first to offer Sunday deliveries nationwide (Truckstop News, July). Royal Mail Group’s express parcels business, Parcelforce Worldwide, will launch a Sunday delivery service this month for online shoppers through participating e-retailers, while Parcelforce Worldwide will make the service available to contract customers across the UK. Royal Mail Group’s CEO, Moya Greene, said: “Through these new Sunday services we are exploring ways to improve our flexibility and provide more options for people to receive items they have ordered online.” Royal Mail also said it is also opening
its distribution network later on a Saturday and on Sundays to enable larger e-retailers to hand items ordered by shoppers on a Saturday afternoon and Sunday to Royal Mail for delivery on a Monday. DPD said it welcomed Royal Mail’s Sunday delivery trials, but the company’s CEO, Dwain McDonald, said there is a difference between Royal Mail’s ‘trial’ and DPD’s full, UK-wide Sunday service. “I’m not surprised by this announcement from Royal Mail and it is one we would welcome. We’ve had a fantastic response from retailers wanting to set up Sunday deliveries. “Many of them have run 24/7 operations for some time, but the parcel volumes now being discussed mean Sunday deliveries have become very viable for us. “Having Royal Mail on board with new innovations like this can only help to spread the word and accelerate the adoption of Sunday deliveries in the UK.” McDonald said DPD ran Sunday delivery trials in London and Manchester earlier in the year, and the reaction from recipients was overwhelmingly positive. In addition, 77 per cent said Sunday deliveries would positively influence their online purchasing decisions in future. “While Royal Mail’s trial is significant, I believe our offering is light years ahead and far more appealing to recipients and retailers,” he said.
Driver stress levels on the rise
M
ore than two-thirds (71 per cent) of hauliers say driving in London is now more stressful than it was two years ago, a new study has revealed. The research, carried out by HGV routing specialist PIE Mapping, also found nearly half (46 per cent) of truckers said they were driving more frequently in the city than in 2012. PIE Mapping CEO Freddie Talberg said he was not surprised by the figures: “HGV drivers seem to be increasingly frustrated with congestion, particularly during regular working hours, and this is exacerbated by a
lack of awareness of the rules for driving at the weekend and at night time.” According to the study, 70 per cent of those hauliers surveyed plan their journeys to avoid driving in London at night and weekends when routes are less congested. “To journey at night, hauliers need to approve their routes in advance by submitting them to London councils,” said Talberg. The survey also revealed more than half of hauliers (55 per cent) have had to pay fines for using roads in London without prior permission.

Medical team heads to Newark show
B
arnetby Medicals has said it is proud to announce its presence at Truckfest Original, due to be held at the Newark & Notts Showground on August 30-31. The firm said it will have a marquee where visitors can come and meet staff, or even undertake a full HGV/other driver’s medical examination. “Why not combine the Truckfest visit with a medical to save the hassle of taking a day off to visit the doctor?” said Barnetby Medical’s Ajay Vora. “This is offered at a very competitive price of £40, including the sight test.” The firm has been doing medicals for 25 years, but until recently was part of an NHS surgery in North Lincolnshire. Due to the popularity of its services with drivers, some coming from long distances, the company set up in separate premises and now concentrates solely on medicals.
“We also do other workplace medicals, including hearing, vision, lung function, drug testing, confined space and airside to name a few,” Vora said. The medicals at Truckfest need to be prebooked to enable Barnetby to take drivers’ details and give a time slot for when the examination can be done. The firm will then print off the DVLA medical form complete with the driver’s personal and health details, with the process taking approximately 30 minutes from start to finish. BEAULIEU BASH!
Our pick of the trucks on show at the second Truckmania event held at the Beaulieu National Motor Museum
N
ow in its second year, Beaulieu’s TRUCKMANIA – held in the attraction’s parkland over the May Bank Holiday weekend – featured hundreds of trucks and a variety of activities for its 5500 visitors to enjoy. A star attraction was Transformer Optimus Prime, who greeted visitors alongside the Optumus Prime truck – an American Peterbilt 360. Double the number of vehicles attended this year, with 270 trucks of every size and age on display, from vintage and veteran commercial vehicles to brand-new airbrushed trucks, plus a good selection of American commercials. Companies attending the event included Dalton’s, Harris Transport, Gary Parsons, TWT Logistics, Swift Carriers, Breadmore Commercials and M&N Transport. Alongside them were a range of vintage and veteran trucks brought along by Bournemouth & Poole Preservation Society, as well as a collection of traditional Bedford trucks. World-famous monster truck Bigfoot wowed the crowds with two daily displays,
while in the arena, visitors got involved in Tug-a-Truck, pitting their strength against a PMP Forward Ltd and Dalton’s lorry cabs to see how quickly they could haul one over the finish line. Another activity keeping the crowds entertained was Truck-agility, which saw truck drivers competing in manoeuvring tests, including hitching and unhitching a trailer carrying a bath tub full of water – and dozens of plastic ducks! As well as gaining the fastest time, the challenge was to spill as little water – and ducks – as possible, with penalties added to the time for any ducks thrown out of the bath. The overall winner, in 11 mins 35 secs, was 21-year-old Joe Vickers, a fork-lift truck driver with 2Start Training, the Portsmouth and Reading-based HGV and fork-lift truck driving school. Joe had the fastest time and gained the least penalties, having ‘lost’ only 13 ducks. He was presented with a winner’s trophy, and Autoglym car-care pack and £100 cash.

GIST POTTY OVER FRUIT CONTRACT
L
ogistics specialist Gist has been awarded a two-year contract with In2food (formerly known as Spring Valley Foods) to manage the supply chain of its growing range of fresh fruit pots from the airport to retail stores in the UK and Europe. South African-based In2Food supplies prepared fruit including mixes of mango, melon, passion fruit, pineapple, kiwi, apple, citrus, pineapple and grapes, and Gist will manage more than 25 different lines of fruit pots from their arrival in the UK from South Africa by air. Despite the high levels of complexity involved, Gist said it has created a timeefficient supply chain that delivers the fresh fruit products in the minimum of time, maximising the products’ shelf-life. The fruit leaves South Africa to arrive ready
for purchasing on retail shelves in the UK, Netherlands and France within 36 hours. This process includes preparing customs documentation and customs clearance, picking up the product from the airlines and transporting it to Gist’s depot for processing, picking and delivering to retail stores. “Chilled fruit products require quick and efficient turnaround times from the airlines to the retail shelf – something Gist can provide for us as a simple and complete package,” said In2food general manager, Peter Black. Gist CEO Martin Gwynn added: “Gist’s global supply chain capability has a specialist focus on time- and temperaturecritical products, which is well-suited to In2food’s global movements of fresh prepared fruits into the UK.”

autliner and bulk haulage specialist Cooper Buckley Ltd has taken delivery of three new Euro 6-powered MAN TGX 26.480BLS 6x2 tractor units – with a further unit ‘on option’ for later in the year. The company said MAN ‘goodwill’ has gone a long way to securing repeat business, over and above anything provided by MAN’s competitors. With MAN making up 75 per cent of the Cooper Buckley fleet since the introduction of the marque in 2010, these latest Euro 6 models follow two Euro 5 MAN TopUsed tractor units acquired in October last year. The Cooper Buckley fleet now totals 35. The new vehicles are acquired as fleet replacements and are already in service on the Cooper Buckley’s ongoing contract with a leading oats and breakfast cereal producer. Despite the trucks only just hitting the road, Cooper Buckley has said it is very pleased with initial fuel returns of 8.0 mpg for its

MAN’s ‘goodwill’ was the reason Cooper Buckley took its latest Euro 6 TGXs maximum-weight bulk operations, which consists of taking oat-feed to farms and returning raw oats back to processing plants. “We’re very pleased with initial fuel economy,” said managing director, Frank Buckley, “and we expect figures to improve over time. We also have a half-tonne extra payload compared to another truck manufacturer’s same-specification model we were considering. “But it is the goodwill from MAN and the outstanding back-up from our local MAN dealer, Beech’s Garage in Stoke-on-Trent that sets MAN apart,” he added. “We have only used MAN for a few years, but no other manufacturer has been prepared to forge such a close working relationship with us – a relationship that is tailored to our very specific needs.”

TRAINING BLUNDER
I don’t think I’ll be the only old-timer to agree with the letter from Brian Diprose in the June issue of Truckstop News – what else could the Driver CPC be other than a backdoor tax on drivers? Any driver who came up through the ranks and learned his trade with 40 ft flatbeds on general haulage will get very little, if anything, from the DCPC. At least I got it for free; long-term agency drivers like Brian and owner-operators are paying twice: once for the course, and again for the lost work. The fact that you can sit through the same seven-hour session five times and qualify for the card says it all. In fact, if you know the right people, you don’t even have to sit through 35 hours of ‘training’ – just supply your details and the relevant cash amount and the card will magically appear on your doormat.
REST IN PEACE
It’s another case of chinless wonders in government offices with nothing better to do than dreaming up schemes that simultaneously bring in revenue for the government and their pals in the private sector. Think back a few years to the law they wanted to bring in where drivers who wore glasses or contact lenses would have to pass a minimum eyesight level with their glasses/contact lenses off. If you couldn’t pass this test, you lost your licence; and the reason for this was given as maybe your glasses would fall off, or you might lose a contact lens. How many driving jobs would that have created? The jobless total would’ve dropped dramatically – NOT! But it would’ve created revenue for all the driver training centres when the Job Centres shunted the unemployed their way. Colin Black, by email
Vintage Lorry Funerals took David Cotterell, manager of Portsmouth Truckstop, on his final journey to Warblington Cemetery on Friday, May 2. The 1950 Leyland Beaver had been booked by David’s son, John Cotterell, and he decided to keep the 64-year-old vehicle’s presence secret from everyone outside his own family. The Portsmouth Truckstop staff were amazed when the Vintage Lorry rolled into the yard and the staff gathered in front of the vehicle. Portsmouth Truckstop is a 24-hour operation with around 100 vehicles parking overnight most weeks, and the four bedrooms on site are taken most nights. The
location of the site, close to the A27 and the A3(M) intersection, is visited by drivers from all over Europe using the South Coast ports, in addition to regular drivers who call in for meals throughout the day. The café also provides a meals service to local companies. David Cotterell had been Portsmouth Truckstop manager for nearly 20 years and the best friend of director David O’Donnell for over 45 years. He was always happy, the type of bloke who would do anything for anybody, he had a heart of gold. David Cotterell was a joker and he liked to play pranks on the staff. David is sadly missed by the Portsmouth Truckstop staff and drivers who regularly visited the site. David Hall, by email

Particularly interesting is how trucks coming to the UK in the 1970s had their final drive ratios changed during the PDI to suit local conditions; at one point, Mercedes was building V6, V8, V10 and even V12 truck engines, fascinating stuff about which, as with so much else here, the reader is keen to know more. A fine subject intelligently tackled, but which really demands a much bigger format.

FMX fleet rocks West Coast
WCH director said the Euro 6 FMX is a “proper muckaway truck”
D
eliveries have begun of an order for 16 Euro 6-compliant Volvo FMX 8x4 tippers placed by muckaway specialist West Coast Haulage Ltd – which mark the first Volvos the company has operated. All 16 of the new-series construction trucks were supplied by Truck and Bus Wales & West at Pontypridd and will be maintained on a three-year Repair & Maintenance contract there. Based at Ystrad Mynach, Hengoed, South Wales, West Coast Haulage Ltd operates 30 trucks. The 16 new Euro 6 FMXs are replacements for non-Volvo vehicles, and deliveries of the new trucks began recently – with all 16 are scheduled to be in service by July. The Day-cab FMX eight-wheelers are powered by Volvo’s D13K-420, 13-litre engine rated at 420 bhp (309 kW), which delivers 2100 Nm max torque between 860-1400 rpm. West Coast Haulage Ltd specified the vehicles with Volvo’s VEB+ engine brake, and the automated gearbox is the latest version
of the I-Shift and features distribution and construction software. Rear suspension is B-Ride High. West Coast Haulage Ltd director, Pat Sexton, said the Euro 6 FMXs are currently returning fuel economy of 9.25 mpg. “The FMX is a proper muckaway truck,” Sexton said. “Ground clearance is very good from all angles, there’s a good bumper and we like the front towing eye, which is mounted direct to the front of the chassis frame.” Bodywork is by Thompsons and Edbro TS Series twin-cylinder, underfloor tipping hoists are fitted. According to Sexton, the new FMXs will stay in service for between three and four years to attract optimum resale value. West Coast Haulage is engaged in fulfilling numerous large civil contracts for the biggest construction companies in the UK. These contracts include groundworks and muckaway at major road improvement, widening and infrastructure schemes on the UK motorway network, such as those on the M1 and the recently opened Barnstaple by-pass in Devon.

injured by defective work equipment, in this case involving a curtain sided trailer and a supporting post. As with previous articles, the common factor is the often significant effect on the injured person’s life (physically, emotionally and financially) and although using the existing legal process to make personal injury claims as a means of redress cannot truly compensate for the trauma and inconvenience suffered, it can help not only by providing financial relief by awards of compensation, but also requiring the guilty party to provide the required medical and rehabilitation treatment.

Parliament has recognised the inherent dangers caused by drivers of motor vehicles when using mobile telephones while driving and brought forward specific legislation. There has been an unacceptable increase in the number of vocational licence holders using mobile telephones without a hands free device while driving large goods and passenger carrying vehicles. This practice is unacceptable and presents an undue risk to road safety. Studies have indicated that even the use of hands-free devices can distract a driver to the extent that they may be prevented from applying the requisite care and attention. A report for an offence received from an enforcement agency that a vocational driver has used their mobile telephone while driving without a hands free device in the last three years will result in that driver being called to a hearing before the traffic commissioner. Each case will be decided on its own facts and merits and the presiding traffic commissioner will be keen to ascertain the reason the driver is engaged in the telephone call. In cases where drivers are speaking with their employers or their customers, the traffic commissioner may consider the effect this might have upon the operator’s repute”. So you are likely to be called to a hearing in order to show cause why an order should not be made. The guidelines which a traffic commissioner will be considering are to suspend vocational entitlement for 14 days, 21 days if driving a commercial vehicle, to commence with immediate effect. For a second and/or subsequent offence to multiply accordingly, for example, second offence in a commercial vehicle 2 x 21 days.

A number of people have asked me if the rules regarding the use tachographs and drivers’ hours compliance vary between member states of the European Union. The simple answer is that if you are undertaking a journey which is subject to tachograph laws, then the laws should be the same. The area which I have been questioned about relates to break and rest compliance, the minimum rest requirements and maximum driving times are contained in Articles 6 to 9. The common areas which seem to cause issues often relate to these articles. So to help I have given a brief overview of these areas to assist. In particular, the rules relating to ferry journeys and rest requirements. But to start with I have looked at the 4.5-hour rule. The Regulations are clear as to what is considered to be a break and state that after a driving period of no more than 4.5 hours a driver must take a break of at least 45 minutes unless that driver is taking a rest period. The break which is taken in a 45 minute block must not be interrupted. However, it is possible to replace the full 45 minute break by one break which must be at least 15 minutes
One of the offences some drivers have committed is using a mobile phone while driving. The legislation defines this offence as follows: No person is to drive a motor vehicle on a road if he is using a hand-held mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind. No person is to cause or permit any other person to drive a motor vehicle on a road while that other person is using a handheld mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind. No person is to supervise a holder of a provisional licence if the person supervising is using a hand-held mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind at a time when the provisional licence holder is driving a motor vehicle on a road.
following: sending or receiving oral or written messages; sending or receiving facsimile documents; sending or receiving still or moving images; and providing access to the internet. If you’re caught using a hand-held mobile phone or similar device while driving, you can expect to get an automatic fixed penalty notice. This means you’ll get three penalty points on your driving licence and have to pay a fine of £60. However, your case may go to court. If it does, you may also face disqualification from driving on top of a maximum fine of £1000. If you were driving a PCV or heavy goods vehicle, you could face a maximum fine of £2500. Also if the matter were considered of a serious nature you could face prosecution for other road transport related offences, which carry more serious sentences.

ISUZU LAUNCHES APPRENTICESHIP SCHEME
A14 PLANS NEED TO BENEFIT ALL, SAYS FTA
T
he Freight Transport Association (FTA) has said serious consideration needs to be given to proposals for improvement of the A14 between Cambridge and Huntington after a 10week consultation on the development of the route was recently launched by the Highways Agency, with the road set to benefit from a £1.5 billion investment over the coming months. The money will be used to improve access to areas including Brampton, Swavesey, Bar Hill and Girton, while the project will also look to maximise the economic benefits of the area to provide a boost to the local economy. However, the FTA highlighted a number of concerns regarding the placing of the new road and the impact it could have on UK hauliers and businesses in the region. “Now the government has abandoned all thought of tolling the A14 near to Cambridge, it is time to look seriously at the Highways
Agency proposals to develop this stretch of the road network, which is so important to strategic freight movements,” said Malcolm Bingham, FTA head of road network policy. He added understanding the impact on journey reliability for hauliers should be a paramount concern for the agency when moving ahead with this development, and therefore encouraged logistics providers, businesses and local residents to take part in the consultation process. Interested parties are able to now have their say on how the scheme should progress and whether further amendments to the plans are required to maximise the benefit of the investment in the local transport network. Roads minister Robert Goodwill concluded: “The redevelopment of the £1.5 billion A14 scheme is vital to the economic development of the region, helping to support and unlock growth across the east of England.”

suzu Truck (UK) Ltd (ITUK) has launched a new Advanced Apprenticeship Programme to help its dealers train their top technicians of the future. ITUK said the truck industry faces potentially severe staff shortages as the skilled population ages, meaning there is an essential need to have enough highly trained technicians to meet the growing demands of customers and their commercial vehicles. The ITUK Advanced Apprenticeship Programme is in conjunction with Skillnet, which will handle the recruitment of suitable candidates and contact the Isuzu dealers to find out exactly what they are looking for in an apprentice. Skillnet has a nationwide network of resources in schools and colleges, enabling the company to provide top-class candidates for each participating dealership. The dealers will be required to employ the young apprentice for a minimum of one year and, subject to satisfaction on both sides, a commitment of a further two years is required to complete the apprenticeship. At the end of the three years, the apprentices will progress on to Isuzu’s own Master Technician programme. ITUK said the investment in time and money for the dealers is a relatively small price to pay for the income a top-quality apprentice can generate over the 36 months of their training. “We have set up this training programme because we want to develop the best technicians in the world,” said Tim Hicks, general manager of training at ITUK. “We are looking for enthusiastic school or college leavers who want a great career in a growing industry.”
ITUK said its apprenticeship scheme will bring key skills into the industry The first stage of the Apprenticeship qualification includes: VCQ Level 2 in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair; Functional Skills Level 2; and IMI Technical Certificate Level 2. The Advance Apprenticeship qualification includes: VCQ Level 3 in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance and Repair; Functional Skills Level 2; and IMI Technical Certificate Level 3. A number of ITUK dealers have already joined the programme. Martin Ward, MD of Weston’s Car & Commercials in Hitchin said: “We’ve signed up because we want to invest in the future of the industry, our brand, our business and of course our customers. We’re looking for young people who are enthusiastic, dedicated, are willing to learn and have the commitment necessary to achieve the qualification that will give them a great career.”

HA WARNS TAILGATERS TO BACK OFF
T
he Highways Agency is seeking to remind drivers to keep their distance in response to claims from road safety charity Brake that six in 10 road-users admit to risky tailgating. The survey, conducted by Brake and Direct Line, also shows 95 per cent of drivers are sometimes concerned about vehicles driving too close behind them. “Safety is our top priority and we are committed to continuing to reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on our roads,” said Highways Agency traffic management director, Simon Sheldon-Wilson. “Congestion on our roads is estimated to cost the economy £3 billion each year, and
a quarter of this is caused by the 430,000 incidents we deal with annually. “Fourteen per cent of casualties on our roads are caused by people tailgating. That’s why we’re reminding people to stay safe and keep at least a two-second gap from the car in front.” DVSA’s chief driving examiner, Lesley Young, said keeping a big enough stopping distance is crucial to staying safe, particularly in fast-moving traffic. “Always allow at least two seconds from the vehicle in front, and at least double this in bad conditions,” Young said. “Not doing so could have tragic consequences. If in doubt, remember the saying: ‘only a fool breaks the two-second rule’.”
HANCOCK ELIMINATES EMPTY RUNNING AE Hancock said joining a freight exchange platform boosted its profits almost immediately
S
tockport haulier AE Hancock Ltd reckons it has virtually eliminated empty capacity and increased the profitability of its business after joining a freight exchange network at the beginning of the year. Since becoming a member of Haulage Exchange, the company said it has been able to fill over 90 per cent of empty return loads resulting in a 20 per cent boost in turnover in the first month alone worth £8000. AE Hancock said it realised it was not making the best possible use of its fleet because it did not possess the necessary

network of partners and customers nationwide to avoid high levels of empty running. But joining a freight exchange network of more than 3000 transport businesses located across the UK, Ireland and mainland Europe, the company has been able to secure a significant number of loads per month through the platform by listing available capacity and identifying suitable loads that match with the locations of their vehicles. The company said it has been able to develop valued relationships with likeminded hauliers, including a core network of 20 operators that are responsible for a growing proportion of the additional loads. Furthermore, AE Hancock said it has identified additional business prospects as a result – for example, the company has become FORS (Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme) accredited to take advantage of increased demand for work in London, while the planned acquisition of an 18-tonne curtainside vehicle with tail-lift is a direct result of the opportunities presented via freight exchange. “Haulage Exchange has become an integral part of our day-to-day operation, supporting our ambitions to grow the business,” said AE Hancock Ltd’s Dawn Hancock. “We had previously been reliant on our customer base within the North West of England, but we now have access to opportunities across the UK and internationally. The impact was almost immediate, helping us to effectively fill available capacity and make best use of our assets.”
UNIPART RIDES THE RAILS WITH DUAL-FUEL MANS
B
ibby Distribution has converted five MAN tractor units to dual-fuel LPG for Unipart Rail, which the firm said will save up to £200,000 of fuel and cut CO2 emissions by 10 per cent over the next five years. The two firms have worked together since 1998, with Bibby Distribution operating 30 vehicles for Unipart Rail – some of which run in excess of 200,000 km a year. The switch to LPG is expected to take over 66 tonnes of CO2 out of Unipart’s vehicle operations. The company said that with fuel bills accounting for around 30 per cent of the overall contract cost, it is hoped the move will also significantly slash operating expenses. “Fuel usage comes with both financial and environmental costs, so we were delighted when Bibby Distribution proposed a solution that would help cut both without compromising on service,” said Duane Trower, Logistics Operations director at Unipart Rail. “We’re already seeing substantial savings both in terms of cash and carbon emissions, and we’ll be breaking even on the investment in less than 18 months.” The five MAN TGS 26.440 LS units were converted to use both diesel and LPG by G-Volution at a cost of £8500 per vehicle. The conversion consists of fitting an additional LPG tank that is typically one-third of the size of the diesel tank. An onboard computerised optimiser then analyses the
engine output requirements during a journey and sources fuel from either tank as required. To support the vehicles, Bibby also installed an LPG tank at the vehicles’ home depot in Doncaster, allowing quick and easy refuelling as the units return to the hub each day after delivering refurbished train bogies across the country. Given the vehicles are double-shifted and clocking up thousands of miles a year, they were considered ideal candidates to deliver a quick payback. With LPG costing around 50p per litre compared to £1.07 per litre for bulk diesel, it is estimated the payback period is around 14 months with a minimum saving of £29,000 per vehicle over a five-year lifespan – although changes to fuel prices could see this extend to as much as £40,000 each. “Escalating costs and cutting emissions are continual challenges for 3PLs, but dualfuel vehicles are a genuine long-term solution that will support customers – and LPG is more than suitable for green band driving,” said Bibby contract manager, Robert Earl. “Through these vehicles, we’re keeping Unipart Rail – and by extension the rest of the country – on the move at a lower cost to the client, and a lower cost to the environment.” Based in South Yorkshire, Unipart Rail is a major supplier of train components in the UK. The privately owned company also specialises in the refurbishment of train bogies from its Doncaster site.
TOUGHER SENTENCES FOR BANNED DRIVERS
A
lmost all fleet operators are in favour of a change in the law that would see tougher prison sentences for disqualified drivers who cause death or serious injuries, according to a new poll by telematics specialist TrackCompare.co.uk. A total of 96 per cent said they approved of the government’s proposals, which were announced by justice minister Chris Grayling on May 6. Under the new law, drivers who cause death while disqualified will face up to 10 years in jail. Banned drivers who cause serious injuries will face up to four years’ imprisonment. The current maximum sentence for causing death while driving when disqualified is up to two years’ imprisonment. There is no specific offence of causing serious injury by driving while disqualified. “We thought most fleet operators would back the proposals, but the figure of almost 100 per cent was completely unexpected,” said TrackCompare director, Kjell Anderton. “It just goes to show professional drivers are as keen to support road safety as the

rest of the population.” Anderton said respondents felt strongly about the issue and left a range of comments. Messages ranged from ‘lock them up!’ and ’10 years isn’t enough, way too lenient’ to ‘it will help reduce deaths, definitely’ and ‘we should be tougher on those caught driving while disqualified before they kill’. The government said it took the decision to change the law after listening to the concerns of victims’ families, and said it intends to implement the changes early next year. Justice minister Chris Grayling said his aim was to ensure drivers who cause harm face tough penalties. He said he planned to launch a full review of all driving offences and penalties, and harm caused by unlicensed and uninsured drivers will be among them. Meanwhile, Greg Mulholland, MP for Leeds North West, asked Grayling to make it a presumption that licences will be suspended as a condition of bail for people charged with killing as a result of criminal driving.

Volvo Trucks has lifted the lid on its all-new FH series of heavy trucks, designed with the driver in mind and a focus on fuel economy.
→ M1 South
Details were scarce when we went to press ahead of the official launch on September 5, but the Swedish manufacturer told Truckstop News the new FHs will be available in both Euro 5 and 6 form, and pack a vast amount of upgrades and improvements. Leading the charge for fuel efficiency is Volvoʼs new I-See function (Truckstop News, issue 301). The system, which works alongside the I-Shift automated transmission, is claimed to cut consumption by five per cent by storing information about the route the truck drives along. “The next time the truck uses the same route, I-See operates the accelerator, gears and brakes to ensure progress is as economical as possible,” said Claes Nilsson, president, Volvo Truck Corporation. An additional five per cent saving in fuel use is possible with Volvo Trucksʼ new Fuel Package. This package encompasses training and monthly assistance – Fuel Advice – and its aim is to cut fuel costs by changing driving styles and increasing knowledge of how to drive for maximum fuel-efficiency. Volvoʼs new I-Torque Euro 6 driveline – production of which for the European market will get under way in autumn 2013 – should make for additional fuel savings. “ITorque reduces fuel consumption by up to With its new Volvo FH series, Volvo is ʻpushing four the envelopeʼ in re-defining what a premium per cent. Together with I-See and other minor truck can offer. improvements, the result is fuel consumption can drop by up to 10 per cent. For the average truck, this can equate to a saving of up to 4100 litres of fuel a year,” Nilsson continued. On-road manners have received much attention, and Volvo is claiming the new trucks offer exceptional handling thatʼs much like a car. “To put things into perspective, we can even offer independent front suspension, although initially only on left-hand drive vehicles. This world-first takes handling to unsurpassed levels in the truck world,” Nilsson said.

Also of benefit to drivers are improved seats and driving position, optimised to provide a better view of the road. This is aided by an increase in the cabʼs usable window area and an innovative slimmer rear-view mirror design. Stalks and controls are arranged in priority so the most important ones are now closest to the driver, and the steering wheel now has a neck tilt function – another world-first in the truck world. Safety is high on the agenda, An all-new cab structure features more upright A-pillars, which give the cab an additional 1 m3 of interior space. This means an extra 300 litres (10.5 cu ft) of storage capacity, as well as greater comfort on board.“The cab is optimised both for work and leisure time,” Nilsson said. “A better bed, integrated parking cooler, new lighting and low noise levels among other features, all increase the chance of pleasant relaxation and a good nightʼs sleep, which in turn means drivers are less tired and more alert.” Production of the Volvo FH will start in spring 2013 for the European market.

Thompsons touts new Northern factory
T
ipper bodies manufacturer Thompsons has announced it is opening a new Northern production facility to help the firm meet the demands of its growing list of orders. Thompsons said its current order book is stronger than at any time in the company’s history, which has led it to invest in extra production facilities that will boost its annual output of tipper bodies by around 25 per cent. The company said planning began some months ago, with feasibility studies being made around the company’s existing two factories in Blackburn. With the Lancashire sites already well-placed in the centre of the UK, the manufacturer determined it would either expand the existing facilities, or build an entirely new factory nearby. Thompsons currently operates three factories in Croydon, two in Blackburn, and owns Charlton Bodies in Dover. “Taking the gamble back in 2001 to
establish production facilities in the North of England was the biggest decision the company ever made,” said director, Scott Burton. “Yet in doing so, it established Thompsons as a truly national bodybuilder and with it the basis for most of our expansion over the last decade.” Known internally as ‘Blackburn 3’, Thompsons said the new facility will be producing new tipper bodies within six months – whichever option is chosen. “Our Blackburn sites are well placed to extend our market share, whether stretching horizontally from North Wales to Humberside or vertically from Birmingham to Scotland,” added Thompsons director Simon Shields, who looks after the company’s northern factories. “We can also draw upon a huge pool of people well skilled in tipper manufacturing, with the new facility obviously attracting additional manpower from around the area.”
McNally hails flexible friend
Thompsons said it needs a new facility to keep up with increasing orders

ounty Meath, Ireland-based McNally Logistics has widened the scope of its fleet with the addition of a Krone Profi Liner trailer which, the company said, brings a high degree of flexibility to its business. Specialising in groupage, insulation and steel loads throughout Ireland, the UK and continental Europe, McNally also provides daily cross-border services at home and in England, Scotland and Wales, with fleet depots are located in England and Ireland. To cope with the wide range of load requirements from customers in each country, McNally needed a curtainsider which could provide a variety of loading solutions – thus enabling the company to employ one asset across a diverse range of applications.
“It’s all about versatility,” said transport manager, Alan Reilly. “These Profi Liners are highly adaptable and with the variable roof heights, we can quickly go from high-density to high-cube loads according to the job in hand. “Furthermore, the sliding roof is ideal for crane loading and fast turnaround of steel. In addition, the Multi Lock load-securing system gives us 130 lashing points along each rave, meaning we can secure just about anything safely, quickly and securely – and even lash it from inside when the curtain is closed.” Established in 2013, McNally runs tractor units fitted with the latest GPS and fleet management systems to ensure close monitoring of vehicle movements and optimum efficiency across the fleet.
Broughton bigs-up Merc muscle
C
ardiff-based fresh produce wholesaler and distributor Peter Broughton Ltd is going for growth in partnership with Mercedes-Benz dealer Euro Commercials (South Wales), after having bought nine new vehicles in the last 12 months – including a 26-tonne Axor. The family-owned company has seen a marked increase in turnover in the last five years, after embarking on a strategy of expansion through acquisition - which includes the recently completed purchase of another business in Pontypool. First of the new vehicles to arrive were a
quartet of 3.5-tonne Sprinter 316 CDIs with refrigerated conversions. These were followed by two 7.5-tonne FUSO Canter 7C15s (Mercedes-Benz dealers also sell and support the popular Japanese light truck range), a pair of 15-tonne Atego 1524s and a 26-tonne Axor 2533L. All of its new trucks are fitted with insulated curtainside bodies by Transload of Andover, Hampshire, and wear striking new liveries designed by Martin Hopkins Partnership of Cardiff - each of which illustrates a different product from the Peter Broughton range. The vans are similarly signwritten.
The latest arrivals have lined up alongside nine more commercial vehicles. “We’ve bought other makes in the past,” said joint managing director, Nicholas Broughton. “But we’re now favouring Mercedes-Benz and will be looking to upgrade the remainder of the fleet with more vehicles from Euro Commercials over the next few years.” Peter Broughton is a member of the Fresh Produce Consortium (FPC) and delivers produce to other wholesalers, cash-and-carries, hotels, schools, colleges and universities, restaurants and caterers

throughout South, West and Mid-Wales, as well as Bristol and Cheltenham. “Mercedes vehicles enjoy an unrivalled reputation for reliability, durability and quality, as well as offering highly competitive ‘whole life’ running costs,” Broughton said. “The 26-tonner is our biggest vehicle yet. It has a 32 ft body and runs to West Wales each day, returning with fresh produce collected from suppliers. The Canter, meanwhile, gives us a payload of 4.0 tonnes – that’s half a tonne more than we’d get on a conventional 7.5-tonner and a crucial advantage in terms of productivity.”

SFL ON THE SEARCH FOR ‘EXCELLENT’ DCPC COURSES
S
kills for Logistics (SfL) has announced it is looking to create an endorsement for Driver CPC training providers which are deemed to be offering an ‘excellent’ standard of training to drivers that goes above and beyond standard course quality. SfL said it is calling on training providers and employers to get in touch to help develop the system, which it said will ‘sharpen-up’ Driver CPC and make it more relevant to employers. While JAUPT has the role of ensuring Driver CPC regulations are met, SfL said being legal doesn’t necessarily mean a training provider is ‘excellent’. To address this, SfL is stepping into the vacant quality custodian role and is developing the endorsement standard. SfL said the set of criteria for the assessment, which is currently being planned, will be based on high-quality training and business benefit. A live database will be created of all endorsed training providers, and of those who have had their endorsement removed by falling below the standard. SfL also said a crucial part of the process will be a programme of unannounced audits and ‘secret trainees’ to ensure the standard is maintained during the 3-5 year period between assessments.
Training providers can use the endorsement ‘kite mark’ in their marketing, which will be a market sign informing employers where to find good Driver CPC courses and will give the opportunity to benchmark training providers. Looking ahead, SfL said the scheme could be deployed on an EU-wide basis enhanced, for example, with language skills to make it relevant for UK drivers – which it suggested would further increase the pool of drivers with ‘excellent’ quality DCPC for employers. “This will not be a mandatory scheme, but we know there are many training providers who would like to compete on quality – and that there are employers and individuals who want visibility of the standard of DCPC they are receiving or employing,” said Skills for Logistics CEO, Dr Ross Moloney. “We expect a significant number of the 1400 approved DCPC training centres to engage with the process, to see how they measure up against others, and to gain the opportunity to examine how to improve their service, in addition to marketing their quality. “While JAUPT recognises you as being legal, Skills for Logistics will endorse you as being excellent.”
SfL said it is looking to highlight training companies that provide ‘excellent’ DCPC courses

R
ecruitment company Employ Recruitment UK are on the hunt for more than 65 truck drivers after having successfully landed £1.5m worth of contracts. The urgent appeal for drivers comes after the logistics specialist – whose clients include Sainsbury’s, DHL and Marston’s brewery – added a top high street retailer to its books, together with increasing contracts from its existing business partners. The company is set to hold a series of open days to help fill the vacancies, where potential drivers can meet the Employ Recruitment UK team and sign up for the vacancies. “We’re absolutely thrilled to secure these contracts and to be faced with such a wonderful challenge of filling them – fast!” said Sadie Weston, managing director at Employ Recruitment UK. “For HGV and LGV drivers in the Midlands currently seeking employment it presents a wonderful opportunity, as our current vacancies are for non- seasonal, steady ongoing work. “HGV driving can offer good earnings, and for someone with a family and other commitments it’s a great option because shift patterns are flexible so they can work the hours which suit them.” Employ Recruitment UK was formed in

GARRETT GRABS FIRST VOLVOS FOR 20 YEARS
W
est Country operator Ross Garrett has taken delivery of the first Volvo trucks to enter service with the family-owned company for 20 years. The three high-spec Euro 6-compliant FH 6x2 tractor units were supplied by Truck and Bus Wales & West, Gurney Slade, near Bath. The operator reports fuel consumption to be up to 8.1 mpg on a mix of low-loader plant haulage and platform trailer work, transporting concrete pipes for major construction projects. Following the untimely death earlier this year of the company’s founder, Ross Garrett, his son Luke has run the business. Ross Garrett was one of the haulage industry’s great characters and, said Luke, things were tough in the initial months after the death of his father. However, he reports that thanks to the support from his family and his ‘fantastic’ team of drivers, the future is looking bright for the proud Somerset haulier. Two of the three new FH Volvos were purchased as special ‘premium image’ trucks for drivers Alan and Paul: “I like to give all our drivers a good-spec truck,” Luke said. “Alan has been with us for 16 years so we felt we needed to provide him with a topof-the-line truck to show our appreciation. “Paul used to work for my father, although he has been away for a number of years.
After my father passed away, Paul made the decision to come back to us – so we allocated one of the new Volvos to him in appreciation of his decision to support us.” One of the trucks is a 500 bhp Globetrotter XL-cabbed 6x2 mid-lift, which is used to transport concrete pipes. The other two FHs are 6x2 tag-axle configuration with Globetrotter cabs, 13-litre 540 bhp engines, I-Shift automated gearboxes with Construction software and nine-tonne front axles with steel wheels. Uprated front springs help provide additional ground clearance. Upholstery in these two trucks is a hardwearing, ‘wipe-clean’ fabric to cope with the low-loader work. This mainly involves hauling Barber-Greene paving machines and associated asphalt-laying equipment, including back-hoe loaders and road rollers. All the FHs are on three-year Volvo Gold Repair & Maintenance contracts, which includes Volvo’s Uptime Assurance. Maintenance is carried out at Truck and Bus Wales & West’s workshops at nearby Gurney Slade. With annual mileage at around 110,000 km a year, the FHs tend to work between Cornwall, London and the Midlands. The low-loaders often delivering down narrow
lanes with steep hills, where the tag-axles’ ability to aid traction and manoeuvrability are a premium asset. Luke Garrett described the FH driving experience as ‘fantastic’: “The steering
