In addition to a fine of £2000 per person, subject to a maximum of £4000, drivers could find themselves in front of a civil court if a stowaway is injured on their clandestine journey into the UK.

Nick Freeman – aka ‘Mr Loophole’ – said the government’s guidelines to hauliers “could have been written by a five-yearold”

Mr Freeman – aka ‘Mr Loophole’ – said: “The government has responded pitifully to the Calais migrant crisis and they have endeavoured to place the onus of controlling the UK border squarely on the shoulders of hauliers – and, in particular, drivers. “The provision of some extra fencing and some sniffer dogs does not begin to touch the problem, whereas soldiers and guard dogs might!” he added. “The government should be working in conjunction with the haulage industry, and drivers should not be penalised for owning up to carrying clandestine migrants. Instead, they should be incentivised to declare their find. “And the government’s guidelines to hauliers could have been written by a five-year-old,” he said. “The government is paying lip service to a very serious problem, which, apart from the obvious security issues, is causing a huge financial strain on the haulage industry and the wider economy. Will the government be prepared to compensate haulage companies who cannot survive this crisis? “Hauliers need to join forces and make joint representation to challenge the current legislation that appears to remove the role of preventing migrants entering the country from the UK Border Agency and places it on to the drivers of wagons, coaches and even cars,” he concluded. “The government must grasp this thorny issue and prevaricate no more.”

GIRDER BRIDGE MAKES LIGHT WORK OF FIRST HEAVY LOAD

A

new Goldhofer G²/K 600 high girder bridge with a load capacity of 600 tonnes operated by German heavyhaulage specialist Kahl Schewerlast has passed its first test with flying colours – hauling a 261-tonne transformer over 80 km. The load – a 300 MVA transformer (11.2 x 3.8 x 4.4 m) built by Siemens – was first shipped by barge to the Westfalen power plant in Hamm, and from there taken by road to the TenneT substation in Paderborn-Elsen. Following roll-on/roll-off transshipment using a Goldhofer 14-axle self-propelled vehicle (to avoid the additional expense of using cranes), the transformer set off on a journey that included eight roundabouts and a 90-degree turn onto a level crossing. Only a few traffic signs and some traffic lights had to be dismantled prior to the arrival of the gigantic rig, which had an overall width of 4.6 m. With an enormous stroke of 2145 mm, the G²/K 600 was raised to negotiate the roundabouts along the route. The complete push-pull tractor trailer rig, with 2x 16 axles, had a total weight of 550 tonnes. With transport dimensions of 84 x 4.60

x 4.70 m, the axle load came in at 15 tonnes, which was compliant with the regulations. “I am delighted to see our high girder bridge has now made its debut on the road and has done a great job, too,” said Stefan Fuchs, Goldhofer CEO. The priorities for the engineers working on the high girder bridge included an optimised deadweight-to-payload ratio and unique load distribution to produce an axle load of less than 12 tonnes. Goldhofer said the reduction in loads imposed on roads and bridges when using the G²/K 600 to transport extremely heavy items like generators, transformers, motors and turbines means fewer detours have to be made – so journey times and costs are also reduced. With a power rating of 300 MVA, the transformer is used to convert the voltage from 380 kV to 110 kV as a link between the extrahigh voltage and high-voltage grids. According to TenneT, the situation is comparable with a slip-road connecting a motorway with a lower-level road. Theoretically, a 300 MVA transformer has the capacity to supply electricity to about 450,000 households.

NEWTON IN THE PINK FOR BREAST CANCER CAUSE

B

osses at Newtown Waste Solutions and Skip Hire are making a statement in their bid to support Breast Cancer UK’s Think Pink campaign by having their new MAN trucks dressed in shocking pink. “This really is going to be something,” said Martin McLindon, director of the Motherwellbased company. “We have the Think Pink branding all over these trucks and we might even be getting the drivers to wear pink hi-vis to go with it. “We are backing Think Pink because it is such a worthwhile cause. So many people’s lives are touched by cancer and we know that every penny donated will go to helping fight this cruel disease,” he added. The new trucks will spend the coming months going about their work promoting the charity, and will also be heading to fundraising events and trade shows to help raise more cash and awareness. “In the past, I have done a number of cycle rides for our nominated charities, including riding from Edinburgh Castle to Buckingham Palace,” McLindon said. “But next year I am cycling to the exhibition in Birmingham, and I am hoping having a truck there will encourage some of our contacts to support our cause.”

McLindon said he has not been short of volunteers to drive the specially liveried vehicles. “At first I thought it would be difficult to get any of the lads to drive the pink truck, but the response was brilliant,” he said. Thomas Griffin has been selected to drive the TGS on a daily basis, and is keen to show support as both his mother and sister are battling cancer. “We are hoping both my mother, Mary, and sister, Brenda, are about to be told they are in remission,” he said. “This is such a worthwhile cause and I am happy to be driving the pink truck about and raising awareness. So many people are affected by cancer these days.” Newtown Waste and Skip Hire is gradually building on its fleet with MAN vehicles. “We have been dealing with MAN for about eight years now, and have just taken over a company,” McLindon said. “This new skiploader and hookloader are replacing vehicles that came from there, and when the others need replacing, they will be MAN. “The MAN depot is only about two miles from where we are based and the service is second to none, and that is why we keep going back,” he concluded.

FLEETBOARD IS WARBUTRON’S BREAD AND BUTTER

Warburtons reckons FleetBoard is helping cut its carbon emissions

n ambitious scheme to slash diesel consumption and exhaust emissions by installing Mercedes-Benz FleetBoard telematics systems across its fleet of 750 distribution vehicles has helped bakery company Warburtons win a coveted national fuel efficiency prize. The firm was named Fuel Efficient Operator of the Year in the annual Logistics Carbon Reduction Scheme (LCRS) awards after cutting its diesel consumption by more than eight per cent, which represents an annual reduction in carbon emissions of 1719 tonnes. LCRS is a free-to-join industry initiative set up by the Freight Transport Association (FTA) to record, report and reduce carbon emissions, and its awards scheme recognises companies that have made the greatest contribution towards achieving this goal. Warburtons’ fleet is dominated by 7.5- and 14-tonne rigid trucks, which make 18,000 deliveries per day from 24 depots nationwide. The company had already taken steps to cut its fuel use, specifying automatic engine cut-off systems on all new trucks to prevent wasteful idling, and choosing automatic transmissions to improve mpg returns. Its 12 in-house driver-trainers also deliver courses in safe and efficient driving techniques, over and above statutory Driver CPC requirements. However, group transport manager Mark Sutcliffe said the biggest single impact on fuel efficiency and carbon emissions has come from its installation of telematics. “The whole process of conducting an initial evaluation, then rolling the system out, educating drivers and backroom staff in the use of the FleetBoard equipment and its supporting software, monitoring and then working to improve the results, took 15 months of hard work by our teams,” he said. “But through this initiative we have not only reduced fuel consumption and carbon emissions, but also evolved our culture of continuous improvement in distribution and levels of

Read the paper online at www.transportcafe.co.uk

engagement across our teams.” Warburtons carried out two trials of FleetBoard telematics. The first involved five vehicles, operated by six drivers, at one of its distribution sites. The results suggested further investigation was warranted so a wider, deeper selection of 30 drivers across several depots were invited to take part. The latest additions to Warburtons’ fleet are Mercedes Atego 13-tonners, but the company runs trucks by other manufacturers and the equipment works equally well with all. The operator used FleetBoard’s Vehicle Management Performance Analysis programme to provide detailed feedback on the performance of each truck – and driver – on its fleet. Reports produced in-depth information on factors including harsh braking, over-revving, ‘green band’ driving, use of engine and exhaust braking, number of gear changes and speeds, as well as recording the vehicle’s gross weight and the ‘degree of difficulty’ of its route. The software can also track the position and time of the vehicle at every point along its route, its weight, fuel consumption and a host of other factors, as required. “FleetBoard has given us an accurate picture of driving performance throughout the working day, and how driving style impacts on our fuel consumption,” Sutcliffe said. “We focus on the scoring system, which gives drivers marks out of 100 based only on driving style – mpg is not a factor in this calculation – enabling all drivers to be compared equally regardless of their vehicle or their journey. In this way we were able to ‘iron out’ differences between individual trucks and routes. “From an initial baseline score of 65, the average FleetBoard score for drivers across all our depots rose steadily through the 15 months of the implementation, to finish at a high of 90,” he added. “Many individuals were consistently scoring well into the 90s and our encouragement for all drivers to raise their performance continues. These results by our drivers mean that we have already achieved our business case benefits.”

THE INDUSTRY IS AT FAULT

It is with great interest I and many others in our industry are hearing and reading about the driver shortage in the UK. It has been talked about in our national media and on some national TV and radio outlets; all our favourite trucking magazines have quoted or included articles on this massive problem; the FTA has held seminars and the RHA is asking for £150m to help sort out the problem. Yet no one has the decency or common sense to ask those in this profession the real reason for the looming driver shortage. Or do they prefer to be blind and ignore the real reason and simply look for an easy and short-term solution without actually tackling any of the issues that have brought it about? The profession of driving (or ‘trucking’) has always been kept alive by those within the close family of a driver or on recommendation from him/ her. And this is the real reason there will be a driver shortage, and no amount of money asked for by the RHA will solve the problem. If drivers cannot recommend and entice new drivers, then there is little hope of the many hundreds, if not thousands entering this profession to solve the driver shortage. The industry MUST talk to those already in the profession to find out why no one would recommend it to others considering it, and then resolve those issues so the role of trucking can become attractive – and, in fact, bring new blood into the Industry. No youngster or person being made redundant or leaving Her Majesty’s

Services would consider this profession under its current terms of long hours and poor reward. With the internet and social media, they are able to ask questions, look around and find out if it is a sensible career choice – and when doing so will get a very clear message to look elsewhere. As was expected, the RHA thinks money is the solution to all problems. It prefers to turn a blind eye, ignore the issues and, in a dream world, hope it will sort itself out. Those in this profession of trucking are and always have been the biggest recruiters. Sons and daughters following dad’s footsteps, recommending it as a good career choice, and encouraging the new recruits. Now we have a profession of truckers, proud in their job, but fed up of all the rules and regulations, lack of respect, poor conditions and long, unsocial hours with poor reward, which in reality would discourage rather than recommend this as a career and choice of direction. When this industry, its leaders and Associations recognise and respect drivers as their main asset, talk to us and help to sort out the issues, then maybe the driver shortage could be a thing in the past. But until then, I suspect things will continue to get worse. Companies will fail to find good and competent drivers, then look abroad to recruit and incur far greater cost in repair and management, and suffer the consequence of not being able to employ highly skilled and proficient UK trained drivers.

Asking for money, talking without any common sense, ignoring the facts and failing to resolve the issues will not help bring more new blood into this profession. Talk to drivers, find out why no one will recommend it, help solve the issues and work together with us to make the profession attractive and gain the new recruits required to keep the economy moving, companies in profit and a future for this industry. For the last 20-30 years, this great UK industry has lost all respect for the once very proud “Knights of the Road”, who gave their heart and soul into being the best, working hard and long hours to bring about profit. And yet our conditions and welfare stood still and we became an easy target for rule and regulation. Pay stood still, and failed to increase. If this industry wants to recruit drivers, then look at the real problem. Find out why many are looking elsewhere for a career, hanging up their keys and calling it a day, and why we cannot recommend to others and deter, rather than encourage. There will be a driver shortage unless the industry acts and respects those already in the profession, and talks and works with us. Drivers are your main asset, so stop treating us as numbers and talk to us, and then this industry will live another day. Or in five years, the UK haulage industry will only find new drivers from abroad and suffer the consequences. Barrie Tozer www.truckersworld.co.uk

DOUBLE-EDGED STORY

This is a bit of a doubled-edge story. I was diagnosed with progressive MS last year, and on informing DVLA, I was left driving from June till November, at which time they revoked my HGV licence and left me with car licence. I was expecting this – but I was then asked to go for a medical assessment at the DSA, which came as a surprise as every other MS sufferer I spoke to said they got their car licence back, minus truck entitlement. But as they never had or intended to drive a truck, it did not matter. I went for the assessment and asked the examiner what the test was. He assured me it was not a test, but after I went out he told me I did not look in the mirror enough and was steering with one hand. I pointed out to him that up until a few months before I was driving a 44-tonne artic, but he replied that this did not impress him. So I have now had my car licence taken away. When I asked him about his medical training so I could get an idea of whether he was qualified to asses me, he told me he had none – he was a driving examiner! Yet the DVLA said the reason for revoking my licence was because of my MS! I pointed out I have been driving trucks since I was 17; I am now 52 have never been in a road traffic accident or have been done for dangerous driving. But that did not count. I pointed out I had my Driver CPC, but that was no help. I am not on medication and I do not suffer fits or blackouts, yet my professional driving record and my card means absolutely nothing. After 35 years in transport, I have been totally turned over by the DVLA, and my card means nothing other than another way to fine professional drivers for doing their job. Rant over. SERVICES SAFETY

Summer is here and motorway services are very busy. But as a truck driver, I am very concerned about motorway service area operators allowing cars, caravans and vans etc to park in the area designated for HGV parking. With children and adults running around while trucks are manoeuvring, it’s an accident just waiting to happen. Time for a campaign to end this. George Purdew By email

The latest film from District 9 director Neill Blomkamp is a story about a ground-breaking AI robot who gets kidnapped from its creator and taken under the wing of a dysfunctional street gang. As ever with Blomkamp, the effects are mesmerising – and the story in this one is good to boot and delivers a surprisingly strong punch at the end.

This book paints a somewhat gloomy and depressing picture of protagonist Martin Dole’s life during Thatcher’s Britain of the 1980s. It’s certainly a frank and forthright tale, and pulls no punches in the way it portrays the struggles of a long-term unemployed man trying to find a job and scratch together a living while society seems hell-bent on getting in his way. At 120 pages, it’s a fairly short tale, but it’s easily readable and will no doubt resonate with anyone who has had to deal with unemployment at some Rating:  point in their life.

Formed in 1985 by former guitarists of Yes and Asia (Steve Howe) and Genesis (Steve Hackett), and fronted by vocalist Max Bacon, GTR (short for ‘guitar’) survived just two years: this album, and two singles. A very guitar-orientated album, but one that somehow manages to be far more AOR and ’80s mainstream than its origins might suggest.

ontinuing his review of compensation claims, Steven Hinchliffe looks at a situation experienced by a reader of Truckstop News who was seeking an award of personal injury compensation. In this particular case we will look into the claim in detail and in this part examine the initial difficulties experienced, and then look at the outcome in the next issue. All of the accident victims mentioned in these articles are clients of my firm, Hinchliffes Solicitors. They have kindly given permission to disclose details of their real life experiences resulting in personal injury claims, and the steps taken to make an accident compensation claim. All these clients contacted my firm after seeing our details in Truckstop News. In this two part article I highlight an accident involving a HGV driver who had an accident in the EU while loading his trailer, but was he able to bring a successful personal injury claim in England? As with previous articles, the common factor is the often significant effect on the injured person’s life (physically, emotionally and financially) and although using the existing legal process to make personal injury claims as a means of redress cannot truly compensate for the trauma and inconvenience suffered, it can help not only

ADVERTORIAL

In this issue Steven Hinchliffe of the professional drivers’ “go to” Personal Injury specialists Hinchliffes Solicitors (see their advert on the front page) considers a

by providing financial relief by awards of compensation, but also requiring the guilty party to provide the required medical and rehabilitation treatment. In cases where the other party accepts responsibility for the accident but it may take some time before the injured person fully recovers, it may be possible for part of their compensation to be paid on account, pending the final valuation of the claim. This can be particularly helpful in situations where the injured person has not yet returned to work and their income has been reduced. CASE STUDY - INJURY WHILE LOADING TRAILER IN EU - PART 1 It is not uncommon for people on holiday in Europe to have a car accident in which they suffer an injury, and under European Law it is now much easier to have their compensation claim dealt with in the UK upon their return. What is the position with accidents suffered in the EU when you are working, as in this case when loading a trailer? Such a situation is less straight forward, but I hope this example will show that in certain circumstances the claim can also be dealt with back home. Many people would not bother to make a claim if they had to deal with foreign lawyers and insurance companies, sacrificing their opportunity for legitimate compensation. This case involves Mr M of Devises (name withheld at client’s request). In early autumn 2012 Mr M and a work colleague were in an EU country with a curtain sided trailer, collecting a load of large bags of powder. The bags had to be securely strapped before the 2 men could drive off. To do this Mr M had to get onto the trailer and there were usually steps at the back and a strap to assist with access. However, the trailer provided on this occasion was old with no steps, ladder or strap to help him. He therefore had to try and scramble up, and in doing so slipped and fell to the ground suffering injury. He rang his employer’s office in England to report the accident, and completed details in the accident book on his return to the UK. Mr M contacted us in February 2013 and because his employer was based in England we were able to assist. Once we had explained our contractual

Steven Hinchliffe terms and arranged legal expenses insurance for him (as protection from having to pay legal costs if his case was not successful), we wrote a detailed letter to his employer setting out the accident circumstances, the injuries he suffered, and why they were at fault and should compensate him for those injuries and associated financial losses. The matter passed to the company’s insurers, who were eventually persuaded to arrange and fund some much needed physiotherapy treatment to his shoulder and ankle. Having taken this step, it was then a surprise that a few weeks later the insurers denied that the company was at fault. Their position was that Mr M should not have tried to get onto the trailer and the accident was therefore his own fault. How did they think he was supposed to secure the load without getting onto the trailer bed in order to strap it? The insurers were being very difficult, and despite our counter arguments and submissions that their position could not be supported, they dug in their heels. Did Mr M throw in the towel or did common sense prevail? Read the conclusion of this case report in the next issue of Truckstop News. DRIVING WITHOUT INSURANCE This issue I am looking at the offence of using a vehicle without insurance. In particular, what the legislation is in relation to the offence, what the sentencing options are and what the court will consider when dealing with such an offence. Also, I will look at the statutory defence and whether a ‘special reasons’ argument can be submitted to avoid a licence being endorsed. To start at the beginning, the offence under consideration is using a vehicle without insurance. Under section 143(1)(a) Road Traffic Act 1988, ‘a person must not use a motor vehicle on a road or other public place unless there is in force in relation to the use of that vehicle by that persona policy of insurance’. Under section 145, the policy must be issued by an authorised insurer and must insure for death or bodily injury to any person, or damage to property, caused by, or arising out of, the use of a vehicle on a road in Great Britain – ie, third-party insurance. This is the overview, but is worth looking at the actual legislation. The legislation for the most common offences under Section 143 is as follows: Users of motor vehicles to be insured or secured against third-party risks. (1) Subject to the provisions of this Part of this Act — (a) a person must not use a motor vehicle on a road or other public place unless there is in force in relation to the use of the vehicle by that person such a policy of insurance or such a security in respect of third party risks as complies with the requirements of this Part of this Act, and (b) a person must not cause or permit any other person to use a motor vehicle on a road, or other public place, unless there is in force in relation to the use of the vehicle by that other person such a policy of insurance or such a security in respect of third party risks as complies with the requirements of this Part of this Act. (2) If a person acts in contravention of subsection (1) above they are guilty of an offence. When we do this, it becomes clear the offence is slightly more wide-

ranging in that it applies to using a motor vehicle in a public place as well as a road. Also, there are additional offences which can arise, namely causing or permitting a person to use a motor vehicle without insurance. So it possible that third parties can also be prosecuted under this legislation, and not just the driver. Offences of causing or permitting the uninsured use of a vehicle should be regarded as being as serious as using a motor vehicle without insurance. So what about a defence? Well, if there was insurance in place, that’s a complete defence. In addition to this, if we look at Section 143 (3), it becomes clear a statutory defence may be available under certain specific circumstances. Section 143 (3) states: (3) A person charged with using a motor vehicle in contravention of this section shall not be convicted if he proves — (a) that the vehicle did not belong to him and was not in his possession under a contract of hiring or of loan, (b) that he was using the vehicle in the course of his employment, and that he neither knew nor had reason to believe that there was not in force in relation to the vehicle such a policy of insurance or security as is mentioned in subsection (1) above. So this statutory defence provided by section 143(3) Road Traffic Act 1988 is primarily in relation to a driver who unwittingly drives his employer’s uninsured vehicle. Provided a worker can prove to the court that they satisfy the requirements of section 143 (3) (a) to (c) above, then they shall not be convicted. So to summarise, the test is: 1. The vehicle did not belong to him and was not in his possession under a contract of hiring or of loan; 2. That he was using the vehicle in the course of his employment; and 3. That he neither knew, nor had reason to believe, that there was not in force in relation to the vehicle such a policy of insurance or security. Where a driver has obtained a policy of insurance by deception, the

policy will be valid so far as liability under section 143 is concerned until the insurers have taken steps to ‘avoid’ it. The courts take a very serious view of offences involving using a vehicle without insurance. The offence is triable only summarily, in other words in the Magistrates’ Court. The Court can impose a fine, but must endorse and may disqualify. If there is no disqualification, the court must impose 6-8 points on the licence. When reflecting upon the seriousness of the offence, the court will consider the effect of aggravating and mitigating factors. Examples of matters which are aggravating factors are where a driver has: never passed test; gave false details; was driving a large goods vehicle or passenger service vehicle etc; driving for hire or reward. Also, any evidence of sustained uninsured use. Mitgating factors might include: where the responsibility for providing insurance rests with another; a genuine misunderstanding; a recent failure to renew or failure to transfer vehicle details where insurance was previously in existence. As indicated above, The Road Traffic Offenders Act 1988 s.44 provides that endorsement is mandatory for, among other offences, a contravention of the Road Traffic Act 1988 s.143(1), unless there are special reasons for not endorsing. When presenting a ‘special reasons’ argument, it must demonstrate the four minimum criteria that must be met for the court to accept there are ‘special reasons’ for committing an offence. These are: it must be a mitigating or extenuating circumstance; not amount to a defence; be directly connected with the commission of the offence; and be one which the court ought properly to take into consideration when imposing sentence. Hopefully this has given an insight into the offence, but this is only a broad overview and you should consider seeking advice from a specialist.

CONCRETE PUMP FL CHASSIS

IS THE RIGHT MIX

E

asymix Concrete of Croydon, South London has taken delivery of a new Volvo FL-210 4x2 rigid from Volvo Truck and Bus Centre London at Croydon. The 12-tonne GVW truck with rear air suspension, is fitted with a Schwing Stetter SP500 groundline concrete pump capable of placing 50 m3 of ready-mix concrete per hour. “This is a pretty unusual unit as Schwing Stetter doesn’t tend to mount its pumps on Volvo trucks,” said Easymix Concrete managing director, Steve Brown. “That said, we absolutely wanted to use a Volvo FL and Schwing Stetter in Hanger Lane, Perivale carried out the work and handled the Whole Vehicle Type Approval for us.” The new Volvo joins nine truck mixers at

Easymix Concrete, most of which are Volvo. The FL has a 4.7 m wheelbase and is powered by a Volvo D5K210 four cylinder, 5.1-litre engine producing 210 bhp and up to 800 Nm of torque at 2800 rpm. Power is transmitted to the road via a six-speed overdrive Volvo I-Sync automated gearbox. As with the company’s other mixer trucks, the Volvo FL is equipped with a four-camera system for all-round visibility. It also features a nearside low kerb window. “Because we generally work within a 35mile radius of here, we cover pretty much the whole of London,” Brown said. “As such, when specifying this truck we needed it to be Euro-6 compliant. This level of technology meant it was a natural choice to turn to Volvo, as I completely trust the trucks and the dealer support.” The Volvo FL – like the mixer trucks already run by the company – is on a Volvo Gold Repair and Maintenance contract. Easymix Concrete was started by Steve Brown 11 years ago with one openback truck that required him to manually mix on site. The company now has 23 employees, 15 trucks and its batching plant in Croydon The firm’s new 12-tonne GVW truck with rear air suspension is produces 50,000 m³ of fitted with a Schwing Stetter SP500 groundline concrete pump concrete per year.

P

ump Pal is a clever gadget invented to make refuelling easier – and we have 20 to give away to lucky Truckstop News readers in our free prize draw! It was created as a simple device that keeps the refuelling nozzle engaged by taking pressure off your grip while at the pump. It will stop dispensing fuel when the tank is full using the pump’s auto shut-off capability. Pump Pal was invented because one of the founders experienced pain and discomfort refuelling on a very cold winter morning. During market research, the top issues that drivers were looking for help with when refuelling were: cold pumps, stiff pump triggers, dirty hands, hand mobility issues, large fuel tanks and poor grip to refuel. Pump Pal is ergonomically designed and supports people suffering with any condition affecting dexterity and grip, including (but not exclusive to) acromegaly, arthritis, oestoarthritis, tendonitis, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, De Quervain’s, tenosynovitis, Raynaud’s disease, tennis elbow, Parkinson’s, Clateral epicondylitis, Buegers disease, Ganglion cysts and repetitive strain injury.

B&A BRAGS ITS NEW BODIES ARE BEST

B

ristol & Avon Group has taken delivery of a new batch of high-spec Scania tippers fitted with heavy-duty Charlton Quarrymaster bodies. Actively engaged in waste management, recycling, land remediation/earthworks and aggregate supply, B&A requires its tippers to be highly versatile – which, it said, made Charlton’s all-steel heavy-duty Quarrymaster body an ideal option. “I’ve long been a fan of Charlton products,” said B&A’s owner, Kevin Berkely, “and as we have grown, so too has Charlton continued to

provide exactly the type of tipper body we need. “While our Quarrymasters are super-tough, they are also very easy to use – the curved sides and floor makes discharge of any load particularly clean and easy. We now specify our bodies with automatic tailgates too, which really speeds up the operation,” he added. Key features of the standard 14.3 m³ Quarrymaster design include double-skinned, single-piece sides, a curved Hardox floor and steel front spillboard. Additionally, B&A specified raked rear ends with air-operated

tailgates, electric sheeting, side access ladders and LED side marker lamps. Shot-blasting and full finish painting has also been completed in-house by Charlton at its factory in Dover. Mounted on B&A’s preferred sleeper-cabbed Scania chassis and fitted with front-end tipping gear, the new trucks have an unladen weight of 13,200 kg. Now operating over 35 Charltonbodied 8x4 tippers, Bristol & Avon Group has five new Quarrymasters joining the fleet this summer, with another five scheduled for early next year.

PROOF AT LAST: BAD DRIVERS ARE “UNSEXY”!

B

ad driving significantly reduces levels of attractiveness in potential partners, with women finding it particularly offputting, according to the first ever scientific study into driving skills and desirability conducted by the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM). Finally answering the long-debated question about whether poor driving skills put a dampener on romance, the experiment found bad drivers to be 50 per cent less attractive than motorists with good skills. The IAM teamed up with behavioural psychologist Jo Hemmings for the study. Candidates were shown videos of both good and bad driving while being tested for their levels of attraction towards the driver using pulse rate, pupil dilation, blink rate and body language. Attractiveness dropped from 4.8 to 2.8 in women, proving the most significant reduction, with 84 per cent of candidates reporting more negative feelings towards the driver after experiencing their incompetence on the road. The pulse rate of 60 per cent of female candidates increased while watching bad driving manoeuvres, with a 20 per cent increase for a third indicating a significant rise in stress levels. And it’s the aggressive and confrontational manoeuvres that were found to be most unattractive to women – with road rage, illegal overtaking and tailgating topping a list of gaffes that provoke the strongest negative reactions. In contrast, reactions in men were found to

be less significant, with just over a quarter (28 per cent) reporting a dislike for the driver after seeing them behind the wheel. Body language indicators showed that for men, instead of stress, frustration was the overwhelming response. Candidates were found to frown, become agitated and shift position as they watched videos of parking, turning the car around or other examples of distracted or preoccupied behaviours. “There is no doubt that across the board, most candidates – and nearly all of the women – found bad driving to be a turn-off,” said behavioural psychologist, Jo Hemmings. “However, it’s interesting to look at the reactions of different genders. Some male reactions to bad driving included laughter and amusement, indicating men have a less mature emotional response to bad driving than women, who instead furrowed their brows and shook their heads.” According to the study, the top five driving behaviours that turn off women were found to be: 1. Illegal overtaking 2. Road rage 3. Bad parking 4. Texting while driving 5. Three-point turn And the top five driving behaviours that turn off men were: 1. Three-point turn 2. Talking selfies at the wheel 3. Texting while driving 4. Driving the wrong way round a roundabout 5. Bad parking

Study found road rage was one of the biggest driving behaviour turn-offs for women The experiment follows independent research by the IAM which uncovered bad driving as one of the UK’s biggest first date turn-offs. Road rage was the worst firstdate faux pas for almost half (46 per cent) of Brits, while a similar number say texting at the wheel leaves them wanting to end a date then and there. A further one in 10 (11 per cent) are irritated by someone who takes 15 minutes to park, while an eighth of Brits (13 per

cent) find overly cautious drivers who go under the speed limit off-putting. “Overall, the experiment supports the hypothesis that bad driving elicits strong instinctive responses, with a correlated effect on levels of desire,” said Hemmings. “However, it’s evident women have a stronger negative reaction to bad driving than men, and find bad drivers considerably less attractive as a result.”

REMOTE SKIPLOADER TECH BOOSTS SPEED & SAFETY

P

owerday of London has become the first operator to take Hyva’s recently announced TRR remote-control skiploader into its fleet. Comparing Hyva’s latest TRR model to skiploaders with conventional fixed-position, lever-operated controls, Powerday’s transport manager Bill Cox said: “Hyva’s remote control system makes operating skiploaders markedly safer, easier, faster and more productive.” For vehicle operators in the waste handling and recycling industry, achieving the highest possible safety standards is paramount. Skips are often loaded and unloaded in congested, awkward or hazardous environments, necessitating careful handling and precise

positioning of the skip by the vehicle driver. Hyva said its new remote-control crane frees up the driver from a fixed working position, enabling them to view the loading and unloading of the skip from anywhere around the truck. With trucks usually collecting and delivering many skips a day, the overall speed of the skiphandling process is also an important factor – and Hyva reckons its electronic control system increases speed to all the skiploader’s individual operating functions such as lowering the rear legs and extending the reach of the arms. “In the real world, Hyva’s new electronically controlled skiploaders work faster and offer us the potential to handle an extra skip per truck per day,” said Bill Cox. “An equally significant Hyva reckons its remote-control skiploader system advantage may well come reduces the risks of on-site from a reduced potential accidents for accidents and their subsequent insurance costs.” Working out of Powerday’s extensive recycling facility at Old Oak Common in West London, the company’s first two Hyva TRR skiploaders have been fitted to 250 bhp 18-tonne GVW DAF LF chassis. The firm said a third Volvo-based vehicle is due to enter service shortly.

Firm said Isuzu Forward was its new 7.5-tonne vehicle of choice

F

ollowing the successful operation of its first two Isuzus which have been in service for just over a year, specialist national green services provider Glendale Managed Services Ltd has taken a further two Isuzus to work on specific new contracts in the North London area. The latest Isuzu N75.190 Forward Euro 6 rigids, in the distinctive Glendale livery, are involved in the maintenance of trees in the London Boroughs of Harrow and Hillingdon, handling a range of arboriculture applications from supporting routine treefelling to annual pruning programmes. “Glendale is a relatively new user of Isuzu trucks, taking our first Isuzus in 2014,” said Stuart Darbyshire, commercial director at Glendale Managed Services. “We were really impressed by the demonstration vehicle supplied by our local dealer and subsequently bought two new 6.2-tonne GVW Isuzus on the back of this initial contact. “Both the original Isuzus performed really well in service, so we decided to duplicate the order for our 2015 requirements – but this time, moving from 6.2-tonne vehicles to the latest Euro 6 7.5-tonne specification,”

Read the paper online at www.transportcafe.co.uk

he added. The two new 7.5-tonne rigids have been specified with Isuzu’s Easyshift automated transmission and feature a secure storage/ toolbox compartment behind the cab and a compact tipping body. In operation, the vehicle is equipped to tow a chipper, which feeds the tipper body with woodchip waste. All four Isuzu rigids have been supplied by local dealer Cornwallis Commercials Ltd, and the latest two 7.5-tonne vehicles are based in Glendale’s South East region, operating from its Watford depot. “Based on the performance of the four Isuzu trucks over the past 18 months, we now consider the Isuzu Forward to be the standard 7.5-tonne vehicle for our fleet,” said Darbyshire. “It has become the template for future purchases at 7.5 tonnes.” Now in its 25th year, Glendale Managed Services Ltd is the UK’s leading supplier of specialist green service solutions for the management and maintenance of green environments. It operates through a nationwide depot network that is split into four regions covering the whole of the UK.

TIME TO FUEL UP SET TO INCREASE AS VAN TRAFFIC RISES

T

ime spent refuelling is becoming a critical issue for HGV operators – and the time trucks spend on the forecourt is soon going to increase, according to The Fuelcard People. The cause of the rising fuel court congestion is down to a predicted marked rise in van operations in the UK over the next few years, said the firm’s group marketing manager, Steve Clarke. “Moving the same load in smaller vehicles means more traffic,” he said. “That is challenging, but is only the tip of the iceberg. There will be a real effect on HGVs from greater van traffic.” The number of LCVs is expected almost to double during the next five years, which Clarke said will have consequences for all motorists. “Vans refuel more often than trucks. They carry the same goods, on the same journeys, but require more frequent refuelling – and the result is higher forecourt demand,” he said.

“That means queues. The longer it takes each driver to complete the process, the worse it becomes. Unless everyone gets in and out quickly, there will be queues before the pumps and bottlenecks rejoining the road.” Clarke also suggested long lines of vehicles trying to leave a filling station could have safety implications. “A constant stream of vehicles trying to feed back onto the carriageway means other drivers have to slow down or move over,” he said. “Either means congestion and, possibly, sudden braking. That is a potential hazard. If vehicles are unable to leave the exit slipway, traffic will back up right through the filling station and cause queues before it. “The facts are simple,” he concluded. “There will be another 2.5 million vans on our roads by 2020, so getting vehicles of all sorts through forecourts as quickly and efficiently as possible will be crucial.”

Steve Clarke said higher forecourt demand will lead to increased congestion as vehicles try to rejoin the highway

Supplied by Norwich Dealer Orwell Truck & Van, the Arocs will spend most of its time transporting the 10-tonne slabs of steel that serve as ballast to secure the 300-tonne mobile crane during operations. It will also be used to carry demolition equipment and undertake other heavy-duty tasks. Quinto Crane & Plant was founded in 1977 and serves regional and national hire customers from its headquarters in Norwich, and a network of six branches across East Anglia and the East Midlands. The company was acquired in a multimillion pound buyout last year by husbandand-wife team Oliver and Hannah Arnold. They have already injected a total of £2.5 million into the fleet, with further investment planned – as well as launching a Demolition & Dismantling division. “There is a construction-related synergy between our established lifting and machinery moving services and the new demolition and dismantling operation, which will benefit our clients,” said Oliver Arnold. It is, however, cranes that Quinto will continue to be best-known for, and the company offers a comprehensive range of lifting equipment, as well as training courses which are fully accredited as meeting recognised national standards. The firm’s 625 bhp Arocs made its debut on the Orwell Truck & Van stand at the 2015 Norfolk Show and features a Turbo Retarder Clutch. This works in conjunction with the 16-speed PowerShift 3 automated transmission and can handle 3000 Nm of torque – significantly more than a traditional torque converter. “We have to get into some tight and

The Arocs is the subject of a MercedesBenz Repair and Maintenance Contract and will be inspected and serviced by the workshop team at Orwell Truck & Van’s Norwich branch. Medical cover

Q

I am going into hospital to have an operation and will be off work for about eight weeks. As an owner-driver, I don’t want to lose my regular contracts, so I am thinking of using a driver agency to give me a driver. How will this affect my insurance?

A

It is quite probable your motor policy is covering only you to drive at the moment, as this would be saving you money as apposed to an ‘any driver’ policy. So, firstly you are going to have to insure your vehicle for the agency driver(s), and this will increase your motor insurance premiums. You must then advise your transit and liability insurer, as temporary Employers Liability cover will need to be added for the period you will be off work.

Double or nothing?

Q

I am about to buy a second truck virtually exactly the same as my current one, but my insurance company is quoting me virtually double the premium of my first vehicle, as it says the new vehicle will have to earn its own no-claims discount over the

next four years. Can you offer me any help please, as it just does not make it viable to run a second vehicle if I have to pay double the insurance premium.

A

Unfortunately, each insurance company has its own systems and rules, and regretfully your particular insurer treats each additional vehicle as having no insurance history. Some insurers will in fact mirror or copy the no-claims discount to a second vehicle, while others may perhaps allow at least some no-claims discount for additional vehicles. If you happen to be close to your next renewal date, you must shop around and I’m sure you will find much more competitive premiums for the two trucks through another insurer. However, if you have only recently renewed your policy, I would not normally ever suggest cancelling an existing policy mid term as it can be expensive to do so. In your circumstance, however, if running a second vehicle makes good economical sense in every other way, then it is essential

you find an insurer offering the most competitive terms possible.

Train to gain?

Q

If my drivers attend a driver training course, will it reduce my insurance premiums?

A

Simple enough question, but unfortunately there’s not quite as simple an answer, as it depends upon your claims history and your particular insurer. As a broker, I offer discounts to well-managed fleet operators as they cause me much less work due to them having far fewer claims. Driver training courses have proved to reduce the number of claims, so I myself very much encourage their usage. However if you already have an excellent claims record, then your premiums could already be at their lowest possible with your particular insurer, so no immediate saving would be offered. If the driver training meant your claims experience stays in excellent shape, then it could be argued it will be making ongoing saving year on year.

TELEMATICS TOOL ENABLES DRIVERS TO CHECK SCORES ON THE FLY

M

iX Telematics has launched a new MyMiX tool in its MiX Fleet Manager system that aims to provide truck drivers with 24-hour access to key information about their performance via the web or a mobile device. “For successful fleet operators, it’s no secret: engaged drivers mean better business,” said Steve Coffin, marketing and operations director for MiX Telematics Europe. “MyMiX is yet another way we’re helping our

customers cultivate a culture of safer driving, which ultimately leads to more efficient fleet operations. “That’s because drivers are at the centre of a fleet operation and have a direct impact on the business and environment – from fuel consumption and carbon emissions, to customer service and road safety,” he added. “Getting drivers proactively involved in a continuous improvement process boosts accountability and delivers tangible business

benefit.” MyMiX is available to all customers and provides drivers with daily and weekly scores as well as six-month trends. Drivers can also drill down and view significant driving events on a map – such as harsh braking or speeding incidents. The app also allows drivers to see how they rank compared to site and organisation averages, while being able to view data and scores across all the vehicles they have used.

WARWICKSHIRE CONVOY DELIVERS THE GOODS FOR CHARITY

O

n August 22, the Shakespeare town of Stratford-upon-Avon welcomed truck drivers from around the country who were gathering for Warwickshire Charity Truck Convoy. The convoy rolled through the town for the second year running, raising money for children’s charities, which benefited from over £5000 being raised during the event. Organiser Glyn White said: “Each year we plan to get bigger and better and raise more money for charity, but let’s not forget that without the drivers giving up there time, we wouldn’t be able to pull off this fabulous event. “In particular, our thanks go to Joe Bartlett for sponsoring the event, though credit has to go to all who took part.” After the convoy, the trucks arrived at the picturesque Coombe Abbey Park in Coventry, where they remained for the weekend for the public to see. According to the organisers, next year’s event is already being planned to be bigger and better, so be sure to add it to your diary.

Bond is back in this new novel from acclaimed writer Anthony Horowitz, here writing as Ian Fleming. The story takes Britain’s debonaire spy back to his 1950s heyday – and alongside the superb action, international jet-setting and villainous plots, it sees the return of one of the series’ most infamous Bond girls… Trigger Mortis By Anthony Horowtiz Publisher: Orion £18.99

Jason Slade of Slade Fuels, a Lancashirebased fuel card provider, takes a look at this month’s fuel-related news

Filling you in on filling up

Truck convoy raised over £5000 for children’s charities

In some areas of the UK, for the first time since 2001, the regular pump price for diesel is lower than that of unleaded petrol. While this is sure to be good news for businesses with diesel fleets, even greater news is that this is predicted to remain the case for quite some time. Thanks to new refining capacities in the Middle East and the strong pound against the dollar – the usual fuel trading currency – diesel is predicted to be the cheapest of the main two fuel options for the foreseeable future. In contrast to the experiences of many fleet vehicle-based businesses in the previous few years, which have seen a host unavoidable scale-backs caused by huge increases in the cost of filling up, this diesel price plummet could result in higher profit margins and business growth, giving the UK’s economy a welcome boost. Businesses that have chosen to run a fleet of petrol vehicles in the past may now look towards investing in diesel engines, taking advantage not just of the current price drops, but also of the elevated fuel economy that diesel offers in comparison to unleaded petrol. Add to this the further savings that can be made in vehicle tax due to lower CO2 levels and, in my opinion, diesel wins the prize for Pump of the Month for August 2015.
