TOP-POWER DUO G MARK BIRTHDAY BASH

lasgow-based plant hirer and rail engineering specialist AB2000 has marked its 20th anniversary with the arrival of two flagship Volvo FH16-750 tractor units. Supplied by Volvo Truck and Bus Centre North & Scotland, Blantyre, the pair feature I-Shift gearboxes, Globetrotter cabs and 6x4 chassis with hub-reduction axles. Operating to STGO CAT 3 specifications, the trucks were ordered with a five-year Volvo repair and maintenance contract. Vertical exhaust stacks and Dura-Bright wheels also complement their appearance. Founded by Adam Bruce in 1995, AB2000 currently operates a fleet of 10 HGVs, eight sweeper trucks, 14 mobile cranes and 240 pieces of plant equipment. “Volvo trucks have always performed well in our fleet, but a previous FH16-580 tractor unit used on heavy haulage operations was an exceptional vehicle,” said transport manager, Cameron Barr. “It paved the way for the arrival of these two FH16-750 flagships.” AB2000 maintains all its equipment inhouse and the two new FH16-750s will haul a mixture of low-loader and crane ballast transporting trailers. Scotland’s unpredictable winter weather often requires AB2000 to deliver fast responses to railway line incidents, such as landslips and the after-effects of high winds or deep flood water. “Our client’s area of rail track responsibility stretches as far as Wick in northern Scotland, and we can be required to transport heavy equipment to the Highlands at relatively short notice,” Barr added. “That is part of the reason we chose the FH16-750, which is the most powerful truck available and these new arrivals deliver the reliability and performance levels crucial to our contracts.”

DVLA CONSULTS ON LICENCE SWAP FOR SWISS TRUCKERS The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has launched a consultation on proposals to allow drivers who hold a licence to drive large vehicles issued in Switzerland to exchange it for a British equivalent if they become resident in the UK. The consultation is set to run until February 27, 2015. The DVLA said it had been exchanging driving licences with car or motorcycle entitlement with Switzerland since 1984, and the new consultation seeks to extend the agreement to allow the exchange of large lorry and bus licences as it deems the Swiss licensing and testing standards as equal to those in the UK. Therefore, it said, there would be no risks to road safety by extending the agreement, and it would mean drivers moving to the UK will be able to exchange their Swiss licence and be able to work in the commercial sector without having to apply for a British provisional licence and having to take and pass the test again. DVLA said it currently exchanges around 1500 Swiss driving licences each year with car or motorcycle entitlement, and it estimated that if it extended the agreement, it would receive around 500 applications for exchange each year for truck and bus licences. SCANIA: EURO 6 UPTAKE IS ENCOURAGING

Scania held a 17 per cent market share of the over-18 tonnes market in 2014

S

cania, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in the UK in 2014, has reported a total of 4752 trucks registered over the past 12 months. Of these, approximately 80 per cent were Euro 6 models. “Our truck registrations represent 17.3 per cent of the UK 18-tonnes-and-above market,” said Scania (GB) managing

director, Claes Jacobsson. “Regarding the uptake of Euro 6, operators have been quick to embrace our new, fuel-efficient technology.” Jacobsson said Scania’s sales of parts and services, including trailer/tanker support and tail-lift and refrigerator maintenance, are also developing positively. “During 2014, we also further developed

our portfolio of operator support services, where products such as Optimise, our driver training and on-going driver coaching service, enable our customers to ensure they derive the best possible economy and maximum return on their investment.” He said sales of used vehicles and Scania Truck Rental also performed well in 2014.

F

oodservice wholesaler Bidvest 3663 is running its first Mercedes-Benz trucks following a successful fuel performance trial with a demonstrator. The company ordered 40 Antos rigids – all 18-tonne 1827 models with the sole exception of a 26-tonne 2532 – as well as six 7.5-tonne FUSO Canter 7C15s, from Scottish dealer Western Commercial. The trucks are being fitted with insulated box bodies and multitemperature Frigoblock refrigeration units by Gray & Adams. “The move to Euro 6 prompted us to take a fresh look at the market,” said Bidvest 3663‘s director of fleet, Graham Rennie. “The Antos is clearly well designed and we’ve heard good things about its fuel economy, while the fact that so many Euro 6 Mercedes trucks are already on the road and operating reliably was another plus point.” Rennie said the firm trialled an 18-tonne demonstrator, specified to match the trucks it was already running. “It certainly lived up to its billing, returning noticeably better mpg figures than our fleet average,” he said. “On the strength of that performance, we were happy to order our first Mercedes-Benz trucks.” Bidvest 3663 has a UK head office in High Wycombe, along with four regional distribution centres and 24 depots nationwide. Its Antos are now working from premises in Bicester and serving customers across the South East, including Heathrow Airport. The FUSO Canters, meanwhile, are based at a depot in Ivybridge, near Plymouth. “The Canter is not much bigger than a 3.5-tonne van, but it offers an excellent body and payload capacity,” Rennie said. “Even with a fridge body, we can still carry three tonnes of product.”

YEARDLEY RECKONS TRUCKERS “MOST LIKELY” TO KEEP EYE ON MPG ON RISE IN ADR T ruck drivers are most likely to monitor their fuel efficiency to cut costs, despite not footing the bill personally, according to new research from RAC Business. With fuel prices at the forefront of many operators’ minds, the RAC’s study on driving habits found 40 per cent of drivers actively watch their MPG and adapt their driving style to save diesel. The survey, conducted as part of the RAC’s annual Report on Motoring, found four in 10 (40 per cent) of commercial drivers changed their driving behaviour to keep their miles per gallon low, compared to just 27 per cent of private vehicle owners who pay for their own fuel. Overall, two thirds of company vehicle drivers (66 per cent) said they monitored the fuel consumption of their vehicle,

BYC said fewer UK operators are willing to undertake European ADR movements

compared to less than half (44 per cent) of private vehicle owners. Latest figures from HMRC show the amount of fuel used by vehicles on the UK’s roads has dropped slightly from 52.83 billion litres in the financial year 2000/01, to 50.71 billion litres in the financial year 2013/14. “Technology can help drivers keep track of fuel efficiency, and vehicles themselves are becoming more sophisticated at self-monitoring,” said RAC Business services director, David Aldridge. “The increasing use of telematics could also be altering driver behaviour. When your speed and journeys are being monitored by your company, inevitably this will have a knock-on effect on how efficiently you drive.”

ovements of ADR chemical traffic in Europe experienced “massive growth” during 2014 for the second year running, according to a report from British haulier Brian Yeardley Continental (BYC). BYC managing director, Kevin Hopper, said the movement of dangerous chemical goods to and from Europe was increasing because of legislation changes and a tightening of controls governing the transport of chemicals by road across the Continent. “BYC saw a 25.87 per cent increase in ADR (hazardous chemical) movements alone in 2014, and our audit figures show we moved 6,067,604 kilos of ADR in 2014 – an increase of 1,569,997 kilos compared to 2013,” Hopper said. “We are finding fewer hauliers who do European work want to handle ADR cargo due to the increase in controls, and this has been of great benefit to us. “We have expanded our fleet to cover this extra business, all of our trucks and trailers are equipped with full ADR equipment and we now have two DGSA (Dangerous Goods Safety Advisors) available 24/7 to ensure all documentation necessary is checked before the cargo is collected and starts its journey,” he added.

The skip-loader was manoeuvring into position for the pick-up, but struck the worker as it was being driven through a narrow route between the full skip and a fence. He was in hospital for a total of 17 days and needed considerable physiotherapy after he regained consciousness, after which he spent eight weeks at his parents’ for further monitoring and care. He has since been diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder by his GP and has not been able to return to work. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) prosecuted Kier MG Ltd at Chelmsford Crown Court after an investigation found the company didn’t have sufficient procedures in place to keep workers safely away from vehicles moving around the site. Kier MG Ltd, of Tempsford Hall, Sandy, Bedfordshire, was fined a total of £160,000 and ordered to pay costs of £9,809 after pleading guilty of the charge.

Dial-A-Loo opted for 6x2 rear-steer TGM

ial-A-Loo in Gateshead has added an MAN TGM 26.340BL 6x2-4 BL with recycling tank to its portable toilet and waste removal fleet. The new Euro 6 model joins five existing MAN trucks supplied by local dealer MAN Tyne Tees, and is already in operation throughout the North East. The 26-tonner with rear-steer axle is fitted with a dual-compartment (2000 gallon waste and 1250 gallon fresh water) vacuum tank manufactured and fitted by Buckinghams of Kenilworth. The new addition to the fleet is being used for emptying septic/effluent waste holding tanks, and for supplying fresh water to construction sites around the North East.

ottinghamshire-based specialist haulier Freelance UK is investing in young talent with the purchase of a Euro 6 truck for its newest – and youngest – fully qualified driver. Antony Parkes, 19, is reputed to be one of the youngest people in the country to gain an HGV Class 1 licence. The teenager is among just two per cent of heavy truck drivers in the UK under 25 in an industry that is calling out for young talent. Antony now drives a new top-of-therange 520 bhp Renault Range T 6x2 tractor unit, which he runs across the Midlands and the length and breadth of the country. Freelance was established in 2001 and specialises in moving plant and access machinery around the UK and Europe from its site in Ollerton, Nottinghamshire. The firm invested £90,000 in the new Renault truck, supplied by East Midlands Renault Trucks distributor RH Commercial Vehicles (RHCV). The top-of-the-range Range T joins a fleet of 15 LGVs and numerous trailers. “We are always looking to improve our

fleet and invest in new technology,” said Freelance UK director, Holly Porter. “This latest purchase will allow the business to expand now the economy has picked up. “The truck proved fantastic value for money,” she added. “However, the proof was certainly in the driving; my father came back from the test drive and told us we were buying this truck, and that we were giving it to Antony to drive.” In the UK, just two per cent of LGV drivers are under 25, while 13 per cent of drivers are over 60. The average age of an LGV driver is 53. Many are coming up to retirement, while not enough young people are coming up to replace them. “Antony is already a very competent driver who compliments our excellent team perfectly,” Holly said. “There is a real shortage of young people within the industry. Many companies won’t invest in young talent, but it is our opinion that if we don’t invest in training young people, then our pool of drivers will just dry up. “We, as a business, are willing to invest in people that possesses the right attitude,” she concluded.

“We have used MAN Trucks ever since we started in 1989,” said company director, Joseph Bell, “and we have an excellent rapport with the local dealer MAN Tyne Tees. We have purchased a number of MANs over the years, both new and pre-owned, and the dealer has a good understanding of what we are looking for in a truck. “It’s important our drivers are happy with their equipment,” he added. “They all report the new MAN is very comfortable and quiet, and the MAN TipMatic autobox is very responsive.” Dial-A-Loo supplies portable toilets to the construction industry and public events. The company also supplies and delivers effluent tanks and water bowsers.

TREAD CAREFULLY, WARNS CEMEX N ot surprisingly with the cold, icy weather, February is the worse month of the year for slips, trips and falls at work, according to construction operator CEMEX. Reviewing incidents that occurred over the last three years, nearly half of all incidents among CEMEX’s bank of 350 drivers were slips, trips and falls – so the firm has launched a new safety awareness campaign aimed at its own drivers and those of its contractors – but is also applicable to all colleagues working in construction. The CEMEX campaign highlights the following range of safety-first procedures that should be taken on board by anyone working with vehicles: ■ Don’t jump off vehicles. (Health and Safety Executive), every year around 2000 drivers and workers are seriously injured in falls from vehicles. ■ Step in. If you see something that is unsafe or a colleague doing something that could harm them, ‘step in’ and say something to help them. ■ Ensure you and your colleagues keep surfaces you walk on clean and uncluttered. ■ Keep your boots clean and in good condition. Mud and grease could make the soles slippery. ■ Report defects such as broken handholds and slippery surfaces. Slips and trips cause 11,000 major injuries each year across UK industry according to the HSE, with over 80 per cent resulting in fractures and over 90 per cent of injured parties being absent from work for at least one week.

Parliament has recognised the inherent dangers caused by drivers of motor vehicles when using mobile telephones while driving and brought forward specific legislation. There has been an unacceptable increase in the number of vocational licence holders using mobile telephones without a hands free device while driving large goods and passenger carrying vehicles. This practice is unacceptable and presents an undue risk to road safety. Studies have indicated that even the use of hands-free devices can distract a driver to the extent that they may be prevented from applying the requisite care and attention. A report for an offence received from an enforcement agency that a vocational driver has used their mobile telephone while driving without a hands free device in the last three years will result in that driver being called to a hearing before the traffic commissioner. Each case will be decided on its own facts and merits and the presiding traffic commissioner will be keen to ascertain the reason the driver is engaged in the telephone call. In cases where drivers are speaking with their employers or their customers, the traffic commissioner may consider the effect this might have upon the operator’s repute”. So you are likely to be called to a hearing in order to show cause why an order should not be made. The guidelines which a traffic commissioner will be considering are to suspend vocational entitlement for 14 days, 21 days if driving a commercial vehicle, to commence with immediate effect. For a second and/or subsequent offence to multiply accordingly, for example, second offence in a commercial vehicle 2 x 21 days.

NEW TACHOGRAPH RULES

Have you got used to all the tachograph rules and regulations? Well, they are about to change again. I accept that at first glance, the changes might not appear 15 - Hinchcliffes - Truckstop News Issue 337 - Accident Spot Half.indd 1 561/2006 as wide-ranging as- those introduced by Regulation (remember that?), but the Regulation which is due to take effect on March 2, 2015 is detailed and quite wide-reaching. In introducing REGULATION (EU) No 165/2014 OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL (of February 4, 2014 – the date it was passed in Europe), it states it is a regulation on tachographs in road transport, repealing Council Regulation (EEC) No 3821/85 on recording equipment in road transport and amending Regulation (EC) No 561/2006 of the European Parliament and of the Council on the harmonisation of certain social legislation relating to road transport. The Regulations set out the requirements for the construction, installation, use, testing and control of tachograph recording equipment. In the midst of the regulations, it introduces some exceptions which will have quite a wide-reaching impact. The new regulation increases the journey distance for exemptions from 50 km to 100 km from the operator’s base. This will apply to vehicles or vehicle trailer combinations with a maximum weight of 7500 kg, which are: * Used to carry materials, equipment or machinery for the driver’s use in the course of their work, and when driving the vehicle is not the driver’s main activity. * Used to carry goods and are propelled by natural or liquefied gas or electricity. * Vehicles used to carry live animals from farms to local markets or from markets to local farms or slaughterhouses. Previously, at Article 13 of 561/2006, it stated:

One of the offences some drivers have committed is using a mobile phone while driving. The legislation defines this offence as follows: No person is to drive a motor vehicle on a road if he is using a hand-held mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind. No person is to cause or permit any other person to drive a motor vehicle on a road while that other person is using a handheld mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind. No person is to supervise a holder of a provisional licence if the person supervising is using a hand-held mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind at a time when the provisional licence holder is driving a motor vehicle on a road.

following: sending or receiving oral or written messages; sending or receiving facsimile documents; sending or receiving still or moving images; and providing access to the internet. If you’re caught using a hand-held mobile phone or similar device while driving, you can expect to get an automatic fixed penalty notice. This means you’ll get three penalty points on your driving licence and have to pay a fine of £60. However, your case may go to court. If it does, you may also face disqualification from driving on top of a maximum fine of £1000. If you were driving a PCV or heavy goods vehicle, you could face a maximum fine of £2500. Also if the matter were considered of a serious nature you could face prosecution for other road transport related offences, which carry more serious sentences.

OVERSIZE EXCAVATOR MAKES E MOVE TO CENTRAL ASIA

uropean heavy-haul specialist Van der Vlist has transported a 54-tonne excavator from the operator’s headquarters in Groot-Ammers, The Netherlands, all the way to Turkmenistan. The machine, which measured 11.28 m x 3.45 m x 3.59 m, had to be moved via road for a proportion of its journey – though the lion’s share of the move was completed using Russia’s extensive rail network. Van der Vlist said it moved the excavator, along with parts amounting to around 17 tonnes, by road to Northern Germany, where they could then be shipped across to the Baltic region. Upon arrival, the machinery was transferred to the rail terminal, where the tracks were removed to reduce the height of the load to make it suitable for mounting on the rail trailer. All parts were then secured in place for the onward journey to central Asia. Finally, the trailer was unloaded in Turkmenistan where the machine could be re-assembled, ready to start work.

SWEDES RUN CLOSE TO THE EDGE Edge Transport began running Volvo trucks 18 months ago and driver feedback has been positive

F

amily-owned pallet distribution, transport, storage and warehousing services provider Edge Transport has taken delivery of the first new-series Volvo trucks to enter service with its 32-strong truck fleet – 12 of which are now Volvos. The new Volvos – six FM-450 6x2 tractor units and three FL-250 18-tonne gvw 4x2 rigids – were supplied by Thomas Hardie Commercials at Deeside. All the trucks, including the FLs, have been placed on Gold R&M contracts with Volvo’s Uptime Assurance. Maintenance of the trucks is carried out overnight at Thomas Hardie’s Deeside depot. Thomas Hardie also services and MoTs Edge Transport’s trailers. Covering between 80,000 and 150,000 km a year, the 11-litre, 450 bhp FM artics are double-shifted – often hauling single-axle trailers on pallet deliveries during the day on the narrow lanes of rural Wales. The FMs’ second shift sees them on trunking duties during the night. By contrast, the FL 18-tonners will cover between 65,000 and 80,000 km a year each. Specification of the FMs includes I-Shift automated gearboxes, and the FLs are all

equipped with Volvo’s I-Sync automatic transmission. The firm’s managing director, Jonathan Edge, said the company will shortly be placing orders for a further six Volvo trucks – in this case, two FH tractor units and four FL rigids. Palletline member Edge Transport, which was founded in Chester in 1933 by Jonathan Edge’s grandfather, will soon be moving from its premises near Wrexham to a purpose-built facility next door to Thomas Hardie Commercials on the Deeside Industrial Estate. The company’s first Volvos were three FL 4x2 rigids on ’62 plates, which were purchased 18 months ago. “Our drivers like the Volvos,” Edge said. “They have given us very positive feedback about the FLs and the FMs. I think running Volvos is a big plus as far as the drivers are concerned. “I spend a lot of time talking to our staff and the drivers take a great deal of pride in their trucks. We have recently taken on six newly qualified drivers and we are also talking to West Cheshire College about expanding our apprenticeship scheme.”

TRAINING TO ‘FILL THE VOID’ IN LOGISTICS SKILLS

T

he Freight Transport Association (FTA) has entered into a partnership arrangement with City & Guilds in a bid to ‘fill the void’ of skills development in the logistics sector. FTA has said it believes the industry has been “overlooked by government” for funding to support vocational training because of the absence of a nationally recognised qualification framework. FTA said its partnership with City & Guilds will provide nationally recognised qualifications across a range of professions with the aim of providing a more complete range of skills development opportunities in the logistics sector. “The logistics sector has been overlooked

by government for too long for skills funding, partly because it lacks a national vocational training structure or recognised qualification structure,” said James Hookham, FTA managing director of policy and communications. “FTA’s partnership with City & Guilds will aim to deliver that and help fill the void in skills development opportunities in the logistics sector.” The first of the FTA – City & Guilds qualifications will be for Commercial Vehicle Fleet Management and a level 3 qualification, equivalent to current Transport Manager CPC, will be launched during 2015. FTA and City & Guilds said it will announce development of further qualifications during 2015.

What’s your view? Star

Letter STAY POSITIVE – BUT DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT Following the Star Letter for January 2015, I am all for agreeing the industry should not be brought down further, but I think all the negative press is managing to do a great job on its own by writing about all the negative issues. Without a doubt there is a serious shortage of drivers at this time and it certainly doesn’t seem to be getting better. It is now time for the FTA/RHA and other bodies to start looking at what can be done to improve the situation. I for one am one of the statistics you read about. I have a current licence (just renewed), DQC (up to date). In fact I am off to do day one of the second phase next week.

It is now almost 10 years since I drove a truck and earned money from it. I am in the industry and occasionally drive a brand-new truck from the manufacturer’s dealership to the Operating Centre for kitting out before joining the fleet. I remember vividly just how bad drivers were treated when arriving at site for tipping. I have never felt so degraded in my life. So one morning I arrived at the depot and literally handed my notice in and walked. I just could not face another day. I went on to ESSO white fleet, which was a wholly different job and I enjoyed my contract. When I finished, I did not want to go on any further

AIR OF THANKS

Ray and Pam Morgan would like to thank all truck drivers and staff of the Newport City Truck Stop for their generosity in the collection for the Wales Air Ambulance. Over the Christmas period 2014, you raised a grand total of £74.10 for this well-deserved course. A final total of £805.50 was presented to Wales Air Ambulance on January 12, 2015 in Swansea. Lastly, may we wish you all a very Happy New Year. Ray A Morgan Newport

and went on to study transport along with CPC national and international, and dropped into European transport management. I have seen drivers come and go over the last 10 years, and sometimes I can see why. Older drivers retiring, which you can say is natural loss, but younger drivers are just not interested in sleeping away at night in the cab. We need to find an incentive that makes trucking a whole lot more enjoyable. For a start, parking facilities need to be improved to offer facilities such as gymnasium and better washrooms. I watch some of the trucks in the USA and Canada and they are like home

from home. The European trucks are pretty awful. Totally uncomfortable with no room to stretch out and relax, cook food and generally switch off for the rest period. If we had some of the trucks like the International, the Peterbilt and the Kenworth, then even I would like to have a go. The wage for a young lad being away In a truck is not good at all, and no wonder they turn their noses up at it. Seeing the industry falling apart like it is really depresses me. We need to bring back incentive to the younger ones. Like the Army, we have to give them a chance at the younger age. If a fighter pilot can bomb around

book presents a honest, down-to-earth account of the trials and tribulations of running tipper trucks and plant machinery in a tough and unforgiving sector of the industry. Written with authority by an author who has gained no shortage of experience over his career (classic truck and Foden enthusiast Marshall now works as a project manager for demolition specialist, Keltbray), this book is filled with interesting anecdotes and is ably illustrated by a generous selection of photographs of the trucks and plant hard at work on various projects across the years. our skies at 21, surely we pick some mature young drivers. They will love to give it a go. Make the job look attractive. Change the truck style, like I said. Give some decent rest facilities to the drivers and have the delivery sites treat the drivers like human beings. I think old drivers and new drivers alike would look at the industry in a different light. We need to keep the safety standards as high as possible and make the drivers feel they are very much part of the supply chain. Those that don’t, for sure we do not need in the industry. LOW-ROOF FH CABS MARKED FOR MINING OPS

S

wedish truck-maker Volvo has announced its FH and FH16 sleeper cabs are now available as an extra-low roof version, designed specifically for mining operations with high demands on productivity or service applications where height is restricted. “Certain customers need both low cab height and high load capacity,” said Roger Brorsson, product manager for Volvo FH at Volvo Trucks. “The FH and FH16 with low cab roof offer them the possibility of a vehicle with up to 750 bhp and a gross combination weight of 120 tonnes.” The FH and FH16 with low-roof height come with the same driveline and flexibility as the other cab versions, though Volvo pointed

to a couple of key differences. The roof has been lowered by 190 mm and it is entirely flat, since aerials and other equipment have been relocated elsewhere. With a potential total height of 3.2 m, this version fits within the regular 3.4 m height limit of mine tunnels. For extra safety and protection against falling rocks and other hazards, an aluminium roof shield is available as an option. The roof shield adds 15 mm to the cab’s total height, and in addition to protecting both the driver and truck, Volvo said it also reduces in-cab noise levels. The FH and FH16 with low cab roof is available to order for left-hand drive markets with immediate effect.

VIDEO TRAINING TO BOOST DRIVER PERFORMANCE

R

Turner (Haulage) Ltd has revealed it has started using the Lytx driver safety programme to increase driver safety and help drive down operating costs. The firm, which operates over 50 vehicles in its fleet, implemented the Lytx system which combines predictive analytics with a coaching programme to improve driver performance and prevent collisions. “Our top priority for the last year was to introduce a video event recording system to our fleet, but we initially found it challenging to find a cost-effective and efficient way to implement the technology without burdening our fleet managers with large quantities of data,” said Paul Davison, fleet engineer at R Turner (Haulage) Ltd. “Lytx’s experience and user-friendly implementation appealed to us as we knew we could achieve instant results by using the video clips to coach drivers – something we had not done in the past. We were also able to negotiate a subsidy to our insurance premium as a result of having the cameras installed.”

Transport minister Claire Perry said: “People in this country rightly take pride in our national flag, which is why I am delighted it will now be displayed on British driving licences.” The European Union flag has been displayed on full driving licences since photocards first came into use in July 1998, and the government said more than 127 million photocard licences have been issued to date.

SFL SHUTS ITS DOORS T he board of Skills for Logistics (SfL) has announced it is to close the business and is considering placing the company into administration as a result of pressure placed on the business by the trustees of its pension scheme, which SfL joined following its inauguration in 2003. The news comes just months after SfL launched its Standard of Excellence for Driver CPC courses (Truckstop News, December 2014). In a statement, SfL said its significant pension deficit and subsequent on-going recovery

payments had placed extreme pressure on the business, and its requirement to become entirely funded through employer projects has meant it has struggled to replace revenue streams and continue to fund pension recovery payments. “Given its reduced activity level in 2015 and obligations to the pension scheme, the board felt it would be better to seek alternative options for the continuing industry skills projects,” said a statement from the board. “We are therefore appointing an administrator and starting to work with our stakeholders to find a natural home for any on-going projects.”

JOST THE JOB FOR NFT

NFT spec’d JOST lube-free fifth wheels after successful six-month trial

U

K chilled food logistics business NFT has selected JOST lube-free fifth wheels to be factory fitted to 65 Volvo units specified in the last 12 months. NFT said even a modest weight saving on the tare weight of its vehicles can produce significant savings when multiplied across its entire fleet running 365 days per year, and total food miles are reduced by maximising the payloads. According to the company, the challenge when specifying the fifth wheel for its fleet lay in finding a solution which would eliminate grease build-up on the catwalks and service connectors to improve vehicle safety and appearance, plus make the task of coupling and uncoupling trailers much cleaner for its drivers. “We were looking for a lube-free fifth wheel to specify on the latest batch of vehicles and so we set up a meeting with the local JOST sales manager. We had a trial unit which we ran for over six months – a little over 150,000 km – which performed faultlessly. So the decision to specify the product was a nobrainer.” Jannine Burt, regional fleet & sales manager for JOST UK, explained that while the top plate liners provide a lube-free connection, it is still essential the lock jaw is properly lubricated to ensure reliable locking of the kingpin. This task is performed by the ‘LubeTronic 1 Point’ system, which provides fully automated lubrication, ensuring only minimal grease is used in combination with the special coating on the lock jaw. “This system ensures the lock jaw performs reliably without the need for driver intervention,” she said.

TRUCKFEST TO TAKE 2015 BY STORM!

T

he East of England Showground, Peterborough plays host once again to the largest gathering of trucks and road hauliers in the UK during the May Day Bank Holiday. With hauliers and drivers experiencing pressure in a way that would have been unthinkable in the 1980s, Truckfest provides not only an image booster for the industry, but has also become the meeting place for

everyone who rely on road haulage. Truckfest organiser Live Promotions said it is delighted to welcome back MAN this year, which has been absent for a few years and will take its place alongside the other big six truck manufacturers who will be present at the show. One of the biggest innovations in the past few years has been the introduction of the haulier showcase, which enables large

and small operators to gain the spotlight at the industry event. This year will also see a new preevent Pro Truck Auction on Friday May 1. The sale will utilise the Arena hall and will provide a wide range of quality used commercial vehicles. The 2015 show will also feature the team from Lizard Lick Towing, who proved popular at the regional events in 2014, delighting visitors with their own brand of Southern charm. Plus, a competition will be drawn at Truckfest on day two to win a five-day trip to the home of the hit TV show Lizard Lick Towing, and get up close and personal with the Lizard Lick team. DART SAFETY SECURE TRUCK PARKING SYSTEM REVAMPED

Just off the A2 in Dover Oversize trucks will be turned around before they enter the tunnel

T

he Highways Agency has unveiled details of a new safety system for the Dartford Crossing that enables the identification and management of overheight vehicles and dangerous loads before they enter the tunnel. The job was previously carried out at the payment barriers, which have recently been removed as part of the new Dart Charge scheme. HA said vehicles carrying certain substances may require an escort though the tunnels, while others may be prohibited altogether and need to find an alternative route. The new system will use various detectors to identify the vehicles, signs to encourage drivers to get into the correct lane in good time, and barriers and traffic signals to control them – bringing them to a safe stop and turning them around if necessary. HA said the system has been extensively

tested over the last six months at a disused airfield, using vehicles from a local haulage company. Construction of the new system on the northbound carriageway commenced in late January, and is due to be completed by early April. HA said drivers of tall vehicles need to ensure they get in the correct lane as soon as possible after Junction 2. It warned drivers who fail to use the correct lanes will be in violation of traffic regulations and could face enforcement action from the DVSA – potentially a fine and points on their licence. Arrangements for drivers with hazardous loads are essentially unchanged – HA said drivers should continue to exit at Junction 1a and follow signage to the vehicle marshalling area, where they can be checked and escorted through the Crossing. The safety system will identify, stop and turn around drivers who fail to do this.

T

he Highways Agency has said one million vehicles had registered for new Dart Charge accounts by the end of December 2014, which enables drivers to use the crossing without having to pay the charge at a barrier. The Agency said early data suggested the new system has seen average journey times between 7 am and 7 pm fall by more than nine minutes southbound, and more than four minutes northbound when comparing the first two weeks of December and the end of November last year. According to HA, the “vast majority” of drivers are complying with the new system – though it pointed out it had started processing the first penalty charge notices, which will be issued to drivers who have used the crossing, but have not yet paid the crossing charge. HA said work to remove the booths and improve the road layout will continue until the spring.

PLATT TAKES TGX TRIO Platt’s new TGX tractor units are wrapped in rural-themed livery

L

lay, Wrexham-based animal bedding producer RA & CE Platt has taken three Euro 6 MAN TGX 26.440 6x2 tractor units on long-term contract hire through local dealer, AN Richards. The XXL-cabbed units feature ‘field of cows’ cab-wrap livery designed by FotoFire and fitted by Now Group in Oswestry. “The service and support we receive from AN Richards is second to none,” said Platt managing director, Caroline Thedens. “The team strives to keep us up and running. If there’s ever an issue, AN

Richards is onto it straight away. We really are very impressed indeed with the service levels.” Thedans said she was so impressed that Platt had taken the decision to move its entire truck fleet to AN Richards for regular servicing and maintenance – including its trucks from other marques. Platt has been producing high-quality animal bedding products to the agricultural industry for over 40 years, delivering to over 5000 dairy farmers across the whole of the UK and Southern Ireland.

IVECO “HUNGRY TO PROVE ITSELF” IN 2015 D espite harsh trading conditions in 2014, Iveco’s new UK managing director, Bob Lowden, has said the Italian manufacturer is embarking on an aggressive conquest plan for 2015 in a bid to do more business with medium and large fleets. Speaking at the manufacturer’s annual State of the Nation conference in January, Lowden said: “Our number-one goal is to get more drivers, fleet engineers and company bosses behind the wheel of a demonstrator. We know for a fact that today’s Stralis and Trakker models are every bit as competitive as every other

manufacturer on the market. Both products stand out for their driveability, cab comfort, economy and reliability – that’s confirmed by the feedback we get universally from demonstrations.” Lowden said the Iveco range has never been better and its network has never been stronger. “We are continuing to invest in standards – and stretching these – at every possible level,” he said. “It’s a win-win situation for customers and there are genuine benefits to be enjoyed from working with a brand which is hungry – even hungrier than the others – to prove itself,” he concluded.

Iveco is hoping to sell more trucks into large fleets during 2015

SCR-ONLY EMISSIONS TECH “A WINNER”

I

veco UK managing director Bob Lowden has claimed the manufacturer’s SCR-only approach to Euro 6 was proving “a winner” in the medium-weight truck market. He said vehicles in this sector were often struggling to reach and maintain the heat needed to minimise the need for regeneration, which makes the removal of EGR tech from the Eurocargo range a boon for operators. “When you’ve got a vehicle using EGR as well as SCR, that – as a number of operators have already told us they’ve found – is proving to be an operational Euro 6 headache,” Lowden said. “We’re not using EGR. So regeneration is not a problem with Eurocargo.”

Lowden said Eurocargo’s EGRfree technology at Euro 6 has gained widespread operator approval

T FORS NATIONALISED UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT

ransport for London (TfL) has awarded management firm AECOM a five-year contract to oversee and develop the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS), in partnership with the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) and Fleet Source. As well as the day-to-day management of FORS, the partnership will roll out the scheme nationally, making FORS accreditation available to fleet operators across the country. Established by TfL in 2008, FORS was set up to deliver safety, environmental and efficiency benefits for fleet operators by encouraging the adoption of best practice and industry standards. To date, more than 210,000 vehicles from more than 2400 companies are now accredited by FORS. The FORS Community Partnership (FCP) will take over the day-to-day running of FORS on February 17, with the requirement to make it a self-funding scheme. It said further developments and plans will be announced in due course. “We are delighted to be leading FORS through this exciting period in its development,” said the partnership’s operations director, Anne Johnson. “Our goal is to encourage, support and facilitate the geographical growth of FORS as the leading standard for fleet operators nationally, building on the success in London. From its strong foothold in the truck and van sectors, we aim to develop the diversity of FORS to other fleet sectors to achieve ongoing improvements to road safety.” Leon Daniels, managing director of Surface Transport at TfL, added: “This partnership is good news for the future of road safety and the wider impacts of freight and fleet operations not just in London, but across the country.”

FCP said it will instigate the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme across the country

POTHOLE PROBLEM ON THE RISE

T

ruck drivers are being urged to take extra care on rural roads after insurer NFU Mutual revealed a sharp rise in the number of claims it has received for pothole-related damage to vehicles. “People who work in rural areas already face huge problems with poorly maintained roads, a higher risk of accidents and a lack of gritting during the winter months,” said NFU Mutual rural affairs specialist, Nicki Whittaker. The insurer said claims for pothole-related damage rose by 63 per cent between 2012 and 2013, and said the trend is set to continue in light of recent weather conditions worsening the condition of Britain’s crumbling highways. “The situation is particularly worrying at the moment,” Whittaker continued. “Forecasted heavy rain means many deep potholes may be filled with water and, therefore, pose a real hazard for unsuspecting drivers. “The problem on rural roads could also be exacerbated if the water currently lying on road surfaces starts to freeze and causes further damage,” she added. While the majority of claims for pothole damage involve vehicle tyres and wheels, NFU Mutual said it has recorded a rise in the number and cost of accidents where drivers have either hit a pothole and lost control of their vehicle, or collided with another vehicle after swerving to avoid a pothole in the road. According to NFU Mutual’s claims data, the three worst areas of the country for pothole-related accidents are the South West, the North East and the Midlands respectively.
