Myers makes room for T

trong growth and improving market conditions has seen haulier Myers Group Ltd take delivery of two Renault Range T460.26 TML E6 6x2 tractor units on a full repair and maintenance contract with BRS Ltd. The Range Ts are the first Euro 6 vehicles to join the fleet of 50 tractor units, which comprises of 25 DAF and 25 Renault Premium 460s, and operates out of the company’s Maidstone site. Myers’ customers are international forwarders and trailer operators, and the new Range Ts will provide traction services across the UK from South Eastern and Eastern ports. The company operates a dual purchasing policy for its commercial vehicle fleet, with half its vehicles on outright purchase and half on contract hire through BRS. “Fuel efficiency is a key factor, especially for our contract hire fleet,” said Myers Group MD, Tony Myers. “The Renault Premiums are strong on fuel and the Range Ts have been good from the off.

“They’re continuing to do very well, achieving 8.8 mpg – which is around the same as the Premiums. It’s early days as they’ve only been on the road for three weeks, so we expect their fuel efficiency to improve.” Driver acceptance is very important for a company that prides itself on the professionalism and loyalty of its fully employed drivers, and Myers said his drivers are happy with the new Range Ts. The trucks are additions to the fleet and the decision to expand follows an upturn in business over the last year. “We’re very busy, mainly from continental companies and in particular, from Belgium and Holland,” Myers said. “The import/export sector is a good pointer for the economy. We’re the first to feel the pinch and the first to notice when things start to improve. “Once we’ve evaluated the first two Range Ts fully, we’ll be speaking to BRS about adding further trucks to our fleet, and with a view to replacing the Premiums throughout 2014,” he concluded.

DRIVER CPC TRAINING PDP training on the up

n the first six weeks since the UK’s Petroleum Driver Passport (PDP) became fully operational in January, 137 drivers undertook written assessments with a pass rate of over 90 per cent, and 53 drivers successfully completed their PDP practical assessment, according to a report from Skills for Logistics. More than 6000 petroleum tanker drivers in the UK will need to obtain a PDP card during 2014, and the report said 18 organisations are now approved to deliver PDP training and assessment, with a further 21 in the approval process. Seventy per cent of the centres approved or in process of approval are ADR centres, which are anticipating that many customers

will seek an integrated service of ADR and PDP training and assessment. According to the PDP scheme, companies employing tanker drivers can source PDP and ADR classroom training from an external supplier, but carry out the annual PDP practical assessment in-house using their own driver assessors. “Employers, tanker drivers and training providers across the country are rising to the challenge of ensuring all petroleum tanker drivers obtain a PDP card during 2014,” said Brian Worrall, independent chair of the Downstream Oil Distribution Forum (DODF). “We are closely monitoring the progress of the PDP scheme and will do all we can to help all those involved in implementing PDP.”

Pizza firm calls out for cold rentals

ational food manufacturer Domino’s Pizza has ordered an additional fleet of 26-tonne dual-temperature refrigerated trucks from Burnt Tree’s new Refrigerental division. The extra vehicles, which are all 26-tonne DAF CF75.310 6x2 rigids, were ordered to help the pizza-maker cope with a seasonal spike in demand. The DAFs are fitted with dualcompartment refrigerated bodies built to ATP Class C Standard and feature Carrier Supra Silent 1150MT multi-temperature refrigeration systems. Each truck also has a near-side pallet-width side door, as well as double rear doors and a 1500 kg retractable tail lift. “When we heard Burnt Tree had launched a new refrigerated vehicle rental business last year, we were keen to work with them during this period of increased volumes, as they

were able to supply us with trucks that are particularly suited our intensive nationwide distribution operation,” said John Lee, group transport manager at Domino’s Pizza. Domino’s currently runs a 100 per cent refrigerated, 60-strong distribution fleet, operating an intensive delivery programme in the UK with each store getting three deliveries a week. The 26-tonne DAF rigids are delivering Domino’s own in-house dough for the pizza bases, as well as stocks of toppings and all retail packaging to each individual franchise store. The vehicles are currently based at the company’s main production facility at Milton Keynes. “It’s pleasing to see major brands, such as Domino’s, responding so positively to our fresh approach to temperature controlled vehicle rental,” said Mark Howell, contract hire and Refrigerental director at Burnt Tree. Hargreaves hops onto dual-fuel trial

argreaves Logistics has announced it is taking part in the BTRACK EASI-LPG field trial to test a pioneering LPG combustion enhancement system which could improve mpg and reduce CO2 emissions by more than 15 per cent. Six companies are reportedly taking part in the trial, and Hargreaves is the latest to announce its involvement after Norbert Dentressangle reported in February that it was also taking part (Truckstop News, April). Hargreaves Logistics is currently testing a hybrid Scania 8x4 tipper that has been converted to run on a mixture of diesel and EASI-LPG. “We are thrilled to have been asked to get involved with the trial,” said Hargreaves’ fuel champion, Jay Laverick. “The vehicle will continue to operate with diesel as its primary fuel, but small controlled amounts of LPG will be blended into the air supply to improve the combustion process. “As the first vehicle of this type in the fleet, the simplicity of the system (a small LPG tank on the chassis) will also give us an easy introduction to the application of alternative fuels.” The EASI-LPG project attracted cofunding from the UK’s innovation agency, the Technology Strategy Board, to evaluate the impact of the potentially highly costeffective system.

Hargreaves is trialling a Scania 8x4 tipper converted to run on a mix of diesel and LPG Unlike typical ‘dual fuel’ diesel/LPG systems, EASI-LPG uses only small amounts of LPG to enhance the combustion of the diesel and increase energy release and is being referred to as an ‘LPG enhancement’ system. A single tank containing 45 kg of LPG is reportedly sufficient for a week’s

operation of a typical truck, and is expected to deliver a 20 per cent increase in torque, translating into an overall fuel economy improvement of at least 15.5 per cent. CO2 savings are expected to be in line with the fuel savings, with even greater reductions in particulates and NOx.

ransport training provider Novadata has reported a ‘huge’ take up for its Driver CPC course which gives drivers the option to go from non-starter to completion in just five days. The course allows LGV drivers to clock up their 35 hours of Driver CPC in one week to obtain their Driver Qualification Card (DQC). “Fitting in 35 hours can be tough in a busy driving career and for some people, doing it all in one hit can offer the best solution,” said Novadata MD, Su Winch. “So that’s one of the options we provide, along with individual seven-hour modules, including Saturday and Sunday dates.” LGV drivers have until September this year to obtain a DQC, but Winch said some drivers are finding it difficult to fit training around their work schedules. In some cases, taking a week out to complete all 35 hours can be

easier to manage. “Our five-day course allows drivers to obtain a DQC with ease,” she said. “The good news is our courses are really relaxed and friendly, and training is attendance only for drivers who obtained their vocational LGV licence before September 10, 2009.” Driver CPC can be completed in separate seven-hour modules, and drivers can choose from a range of topics which can help them achieve other qualifications such as first aid or ADR certificates, including radioactives and explosives. Novadata said places on its courses are filling up fast. “We are already having to turn down candidates for specific dates and we’re adding extra weekend dates to try to help drivers to complete their Driver CPC training in time,” said Winch. “So we recommend booking as early as possible.”

Freight exchange goes free for six

new freight and transport exchange is hoping to attract new customers by offering its services free for six months. The West Wales-based Vehotrans freight and transport exchange said it has already gained nearly 500 members, and is growing every day. The European-wide exchange is being offered free for the first six months to new customers, and has gained more than 1400 followers on social media website Twitter, with loads posted automatically on the site. “There are other exchanges in the UK, but they all offer different things,” said marketing manager, Carl Davies. “We wanted to build a site that offered everything under one roof at a very competitive price – why spend on different sites when you can just spend on one? “We wanted to build a flexible exchange where our members can tell us what the industry needs, and we will adapt to what is needed to make it work,” he added. Vehotrans is built around smartphone applications, which can be used with Apple, Android and Blackberry phones, complete with live mapping for loads and driver availability.

“Drivers on the move can upload and post statuses, which cuts down on traffic management time,” Davies said. “The benefit is it gives them more time to do other things. Gone are the days of having to phone your drivers for ETAs, collection times or updates on delays. The app can post live availability at a touch of a button.” Davies said customer confidence and safety are an important part of the Vehotrans approach. “Once you take out a subscription, we’ll be using a reputable credit checking agency to check all our customers at no extra cost,” he said. “We also have a feedback system for our customers’ piece of mind.” However, Davies admitted the business would take time to become established. “What we’re offering is nothing new, but you’re getting six months to bed yourself in to the site and then it’s only £199 for the full package for 12 months. You would be spending three or four times that on other sites. “It makes economical sense in these hard days of the transport industry to cut costs – and for our customers to make more money,” he concluded.

arry-based tanker specialist PM Rees & Sons has taken delivery of its first ever Iveco heavy trucks, supplied by Glenside Commercials, which took over the Iveco sales franchise for South East Wales in April 2013. The company’s order for three Stralis HiRoad AT440S46TX/P high-roof tractor units followed managing director Peter Rees’ first look at the new Stralis range at the CV Show last year, and the appointment of Glenside Commercials to represent the Iveco brand locally. “We visited the Iveco stand and we liked what we saw,” Rees said. “We’d previously been a two-marque fleet, but we’ve been gradually replacing one of the brands due to recurrent engine problems. It left an opening for another truck manufacturer, and the Stralis Hi-Road appears a strong contender. “We’re looking forward to putting the new

Ivecos through their paces and seeing how they perform.” Built at Iveco’s European heavy truck factory in Madrid, the Stralis Hi-Roads will operate at up to 44 tonnes with a mix of chemical tanker trailers, as well as with skeletal trailers carrying either tank containers or regular ISO containers for general haulage. The vehicles join a fleet of around 50 trucks and will operate nationwide, as well as on occasional European work. Expected to cover up to 125,000 km in their first year, the Iveco trio will remain on the fleet for four years and have each been built to full ADR specifications. Each Stralis is powered by a FPT Industrial 10.3-litre Cursor 10 engine, capable of producing up to 460 bhp between 1550 and 2100 rpm, plus 2100 Nm of torque between 1050 and 1550 rpm, driven through an EuroTronic automated transmission.

The company is part of the One51 Group’s Clearcircle Environmental division and is using the trucks to collect scrap metal and other related waste materials within a 100-mile radius of the firm’s Bolton operating base. Company site manager, Jason Wilson, said the good performance of earlier DAF models in its seven-strong fleet was a key factor in the decision to purchase the new LF. “Ours is a demanding business and we need trucks that are durable and reliable, which our DAFs have proved to be,” he said. “The new LF model also looks good, which enhances our own image when they are at customer premises making pick-ups or out on the road. “They came out of the factory painted in metallic grey and to a very high standard of finish, requiring us only to have the Hyva equipment fitted and the vinyls applied.” Fitted with Hyva skiploading equipment, each truck is making up to 10 drops a day mainly carrying 8 cubic yard skips, which gives them a potential payload of up to nine tonnes – though they have the flexibility to handle larger skips and containers of up to 16 cubic yards.

Smith Metals rates DAF’s reliability and performance The new DAF LF FA Construction model has a nominal gross weight of 19 tonnes and is plated at 18 tonnes for UK operation. As its name implies, the model is designed to meet a range of demanding duties in the building and waste management sectors with features such as a vertical exhaust, increased approach angle and higher ground clearance to cope better with challenging site conditions, which Smith Metals’ vehicles occasionally encounter. Power for the DAFs is from the new 6.7-litre PACCAR PX-7 engine, with Smith Metals opting for the 220 bhp version of the six-cylinder Euro 6 engine. A six-speed manual gearbox was also specified.

Pike’s early Actros proves a winner

imperne, Dorset-based supermarket trolley maintenance specialist KJ Pike has said its early delivery of a 4x2 New Actros 1851 tractor unit in November 2012 – a full 13 months before the latest round of EU emissions regulations came into force – is paying off. “Our trucks don’t cover high mileages, which is why we keep them for seven years or more,” said the firm’s financial director, Christian Pike. “We wanted to protect ourselves against future emissions controls in London and other cities, while also maximising its potential resale value by buying the cleanest, ‘greenest’ vehicle we could. “At the time, Mercedes-Benz was the only truck-maker offering a viable Euro 6 product, which was good news because our other vehicles are all by the same manufacturer.” Plated for operation at 38 tonnes gcw, the New Actros has a range-topping GigaSpace cab, a 510 bhp straight-six engine and PowerShift 3 automated gearbox. It works with one of KJ Pike’s four Gray & Adams

Last year, ScreenSafe joined with the Road Haulage Association (RHA) to introduce Smart Test and encourage haulage operators and fleet managers to prepare for new laws in drug-driving being implemented this year, and the introduction of roadside drug testing devices which will lead to a significant rise in drug-driving testing. Foster said she wanted to experience a day in the life of a typical truck driver first hand to better understand the pressures they are under, and how drivers stay alert and manage safety risks they encounter during their work. “I was discussing with ELB Partners the upcoming changes to the drugdriving laws, and how road hauliers

can ensure their drug and alcohol policies are up to date,” Foster said. “They invited me to join a driver for the day – what an opportunity, I thought! FUEL DUTY ‘BIGGEST BUGBEAR’ FOR OPERATORS

ember hauliers of European palletised freight specialist PallEx have overwhelmingly railed against the rising costs of fuel as a major sticking point for the logistics industry. In a survey the network issued to each of its UK members, every response but one highlighted fuel costs as the first area they would like to see addressed in 2014 – which CEO Hilary Devey has branded “crucial”. Every business that responded also said they did not think the government does enough to support the logistics industry, and undervalues its role in the economy. The current Fuel Duty rate of 58p per litre represents a significant bulk in the costs of running a haulage business, with diesel for some costing up to £450 per truck every day. “I’m not at all surprised that fuel came up as such a major sticking point for our members,” Devey said. “Transport is the foundation of a strong infrastructure. Whether personal journeys or commercial haulage, road transport leads to more money spent elsewhere in the economy. If the costs of products and services are reduced as a result of cheaper transport, the economic benefits are enhanced.

Pall-Ex members said addressing fuel duty should be a government priority “Meanwhile, if those transport businesses that are in a tight spot now were given a break by way of a reduction in fuel costs, then their survival and the employment of their workers is good news for both the

national and regional economies, and the logistics sector as a whole. So why must we all pay such extortionate amounts?” Pall-Ex said its members’ concerns are mirrored by the national transport sector, and that the rising cost of fuel is an unnecessary strangulation on the growth of both the industry and the economy.

A-TEAM VAN IS NATION’S FAVOURITE

ew research published by Direct Line for Business has revealed the A-Team’s classic GMC Vandura is the nation’s favourite van. Despite the cult TV show ending in 1987, the A-Team van has become an enduring pop culture icon capturing 43 per cent of the vote. Thousands of Britons voted the iconic black and metallic grey vehicle with is characteristic red stripe, driven by Sergeant Bosco Albert ‘BA’ Baracus played by Mr T, in the show as their favourite. The intrepid Scooby Gang’s Mystery Machine, a modified Chevrolet Greenbrier van often featured in the animated series along with Shaggy, Scooby, Fred, Velma and Daphne, was voted the nation’s second favourite van with 20 per cent of the vote.

This was followed appropriately in third place by Del Boy’s three-wheeled Reliant Regal ‘Supervan’ from the enduring classic television show Only Fools and Horses. Rounding out the top five favourite vans were Wallace and Gromit’s Anti-Pesto pest control van with 10 per cent of the vote, and Postman Pat’s Bedford HA with seven per cent. The Postman Pat movie scheduled for release in 2014 may, however, stir affections for the classic postal van. “Over 25 years later, the A-Team still holds a special place in the heart of motoring enthusiasts – though it is unlikely Hannibal, BA and company would have been able to get insurance given their unique line of work,” said Jasvinder Gakhal at Direct Line for Business.

DRIVER SUSPENDED FOR USING MOBILE AT THE WHEEL

truck driver has been suspended from driving HGVs for 21 days by Scotland’s deputy traffic commissioner, Richard McFarlane, after he used a hand-held mobile phone while driving. During the hearing, McFarlane heard from two Police Scotland offices who had observed driver Gary Lynn, of Kilmore Grove, Coatbridge, while on mobile patrol on Riverside Drive in Dundee on June 28, 2013. The officers said he was holding a black item near to the front of his face and talking on it as he approached the junction with South Marketgait. They observed him driving using the device for approximately 300-400 m before stopping him at a set of lights. One of the officers subsequently issued Lynn with a fixed penalty of £60. In evidence to the deputy commissioner, Lynn explained he was required to make contact with his destinations before arriving

to discuss unloading. He told McFarlane he was on such a call at the time of the police encounter, using a Bluetooth device to communicate. The device had been attached to the sun visor, but had fallen from the visor during the conversation. He continued using the device and attempted to reattach the device to the visor. He was also observed by the police officers switching the device from one hand to another. Reviewing the evidence in a written decision issued after the hearing, the deputy commissioner said the offence had taken place at a busy junction. This was one of the aggravating factors in the case. He also noted Lynn was driving a vehicle fitted with a manual gearbox and would have had to change gears a number of times as he executed some of the turns – all while holding the device. He added: “On any view he could not be

properly in control of the vehicle at that part of the journey, or indeed any part of the journey when he was holding/using the device. This in itself renders driver Lynn unfit to continue to hold the LGV and provisional PSV licences.” McFarlane also noted two speeding offences on his licence, which was endorsed with nine points at the time of the hearing. He concluded this was “not impressive for a professional driver”. Reminding the commercial vehicle industry of the dangers of using mobile devices while driving, the deputy traffic commissioner said: “I am in no doubt the use of such devices significantly compromises road safety, and their use in such circumstances must be discouraged. The traffic commissioner for Scotland and her colleagues have been at pains to highlight the dangers of using handheld devices while driving. In the interests of road safety, the use of such devices must cease.”

ondon and South East traffic commissioner Nick Denton has warned restricted licence holders about neglecting their legal duties when using vehicles fitted with digital tachographs. The reminder comes after he suspended a scaffolding firm for 21 days because of “serious and prolonged driver’s hours shortcomings”. Reflecting on other restricted operator cases at public inquiry, the traffic commissioner called for a significant improvement in standards. “It is simply not acceptable for operators to purchase vehicles fitted with digital tachographs and then run them without bothering to find out what the legal requirements relating to digital tachographs are,” he said. “The legal requirements are not a state secret – they are clearly set out on the government website, and trade bodies such as the RHA and FTA, as well as the trade press, are constantly issuing advice.

“Too many operators seem to be content to get their advice on digital tachographs from a bloke down the pub, rather than DVSA (formerly VOSA) or a trade body, Unsurprisingly, that advice turns out all too often to be completely wrong.” Denton said he found it astonishing that licence-holders are appearing at public inquiry having been reported for – among other things – failing to acquire a company tachograph card or any download software. “How can an operator seek to prove they are complying with the regulations – and crucially check whether their drivers are working within the driver’s hours rules – if they can’t download driver or vehicle data?” he said. “Restricted operators need to be alert to these requirements and the potential impact on their licence of failing to meet them. The responsibilities involved in holding a licence go rather deeper than just buying a few vehicles to carry equipment for your main business.”

BASSETT WRAPS NEW IVECOS

toke-on-Trent-based RG Bassett & Sons has added a pair of Iveco Stralis HiWay tractor units to its fleet, marking the first new trucks to enter service with its new livery. The delivery of the Stralis Hi-Way AS440S46TX/P tractor units follows less than two years after the company purchased an EcoStralis, which the firm said has consistently delivered an 8.75 mpg fuel economy – well above the fleet’s average. “With the launch of the new Stralis Hi-Way, Iveco has refined the cab further and given the truck a whole new dimension,” said joint MD, Ashley Bassett. “In my opinion, it’s lifted the status of Iveco and the strong and efficient driveline is now matched with a very driver-friendly package.” Bassett plans to run the new Ivecos until at least 2019, with a guaranteed manufacturerbacked residual value after five years in service – and an Iveco Elements repair & maintenance policy in place via supplying dealer Sherwood Truck & Van. “It’s a new concept for us as we’d previously run vehicles for longer,” said Bassett, “but we’re mindful that the typical industry ownership model is changing, and it’s becoming potentially more efficient and cost-effective for us to run a truck for five years and then sell it on for a second life. “It’s forced a rethink in our livery, resulting in these being the first brand-new trucks we’ve ever ordered in white and then had wrapped in vinyl. We’ve previously always had our trucks sprayed, but the residual value on a white truck will be that much better at five years,” he said. The nature of RG Bassett’s work means the Stralis Hi-Ways will operate primarily with curtainside trailers, carrying lighter-weight loads on outbound journeys, and heavier goods on the return. The firm said it is here that the EcoSwitch device in the original EcoStralis has proven beneficial, using the

Also retained is the higher gearing for the EuroTronic transmission, which incorporates a special ECOfleet mode to automatically adjust to the loading of the tractor unit to help fine-tune fuel economy. Both new vehicles benefit from a comprehensive specification to ensure maximum driver comfort on-board. This includes full upper and lower ‘comfort’ bunks, air-suspended passenger seat with swivel function, drivers arm rest, door roller blinds, slide-out refrigerator with freezer. The trucks have also been supplied with air horns, daytime running lights and a roof-mounted beacon bar, for maximum visibility. A factoryfitted touch-screen display mounted on the dashboard also incorporates truck-specific European satellite navigation.

LOOKING BACK

I haven’t put pen to paper for many years, but for various different reasons I have been thinking of all HGV drivers I have worked with at a certain depot. The firm has been gone for many years, and most of us drivers are now aged over 50 – myself being 62 years. The industry has changed so much, but we stuck with it – but now age is not on our side, and in the last few years we have lost many high-quality drivers. Only recently, a very good work colleague of mine was laid to rest. I went to the funeral along with 20 of us drivers who worked with him. I couldn’t actually

get into the building as it was filled with people wanting to pay their respects to such a great driver and friend. One great memory of him for me was when he taught me to drive in snow – the exhaust brake drive. He was a real professional at his job. Although all this time has passed, we all remember each other’s names – along with the good and bad memories. But now we’re at the time in our lives where we watch the local papers to see who is next to leave us. God rest all of those truckers; their memories will drive on through those still standing.

I must say we all gain experience over time, but after 38 years there was always something new I learnt every day. Every day was different, but at the same time I had a routine: to make sure I returned safe. I always had one simple thought: If my load looks good and the paperwork looks good, I felt good inside and was ready to go. I am very lucky that I found a job that I loved. I loved waking up and going to work every day – it was a hobby that I actually got paid for! Tony Kingham By email

SNAPPED UP NORTH I thought you may be interested in a couple of photos for your newspaper. I am currently working in Hammerfest, North Norway with an oil company, and as an ex-driver who

RAISING STANDARDS Here’s my Thought of the Day (and most days for the last 32 years): Every company and every individual in the UK and the world, far from being derogatory, abusive and in any other way unpleasant, should be thankful. Thankful to the transport infrastructure, our industry, for EVERYTHING that they have. The clothes on their backs, the food in their mouths, the homes in which they live and the toys with which they occupy themselves. Without us and those like us, they would not have any part of it, and would spend every day wondering where their next meal is coming from. Luckily for them this industry is owned, for the most part, by lorry drivers – and operated by the same. A band of men who use, as a matter of course, profane language as their means of communication, an ignorant attitude in their interaction with others and a general appearance of uneducated stupidity. Until these men choose to present themselves in a better light, and company owners demand to be represented within the upper echelons of this society where they deservedly belong, the working life of all of us shall continue in the same vein as now – and we deserve nothing better. Details were scarce when we went to press ahead of the official launch on September 5, but the Swedish manufacturer told Truckstop News the new FHs will be available in both Euro 5 and 6 form, and pack a vast amount of upgrades and improvements. Leading the charge for fuel efficiency is Volvoʼs new I-See function (Truckstop News, issue 301). The system, which works alongside the I-Shift automated transmission, is claimed to cut consumption by five per cent by storing information about the route the truck drives along. “The next time the truck uses the same route, I-See operates the accelerator, gears and brakes to ensure progress is as economical as possible,” said Claes Nilsson, president, Volvo Truck Corporation. An additional five per cent saving in fuel use is possible with Volvo Trucksʼ new Fuel Package. This package encompasses training and monthly assistance – Fuel Advice – and its aim is to cut fuel costs by changing driving styles and increasing knowledge of how to drive for maximum fuel-efficiency. lmost two thirds (64 per cent) of SME owners in the transport sector are in favour of the living wage, a voluntary concept that asks employers to commit to paying staff a wage that covers the basic cost of living, according to a new report. The Close Brothers Business Barometer, which is a quarterly poll of SME owners and senior management, also revealed 37 per cent of of those in favour could see the policy being implemented in their business in the near future. “Rather than a legally enforceable level of pay like the national minimum wage, adopting the living wage is an ethical decision that businesses may take to ensure their staff can achieve a decent standard of living,” said Close Brothers’ Transport Division MD, John Fawcett. “The idea has been in the spotlight recently receiving widespread political support, but to date has seen limited backing from employers – so it’s interesting to learn such a large proportion are now considering its implementation.” The living wage currently stands at £8.55

Parliament has recognised the inherent dangers caused by drivers of motor vehicles when using mobile telephones while driving and brought forward specific legislation. There has been an unacceptable increase in the number of vocational licence holders using mobile telephones without a hands free device while driving large goods and passenger carrying vehicles. This practice is unacceptable and presents an undue risk to road safety. Studies have indicated that even the use of hands-free devices can distract a driver to the extent that they may be prevented from applying the requisite care and attention. A report for an offence received from an enforcement agency that a vocational driver has used their mobile telephone while driving without a hands free device in the last three years will result in that driver being called to a hearing before the traffic commissioner. Each case will be decided on its own facts and merits and the presiding traffic commissioner will be keen to ascertain the reason the driver is engaged in the telephone call. In cases where drivers are speaking with their employers or their customers, the traffic commissioner may consider the effect this might have upon the operator’s repute”. So you are likely to be called to a hearing in order to show cause why an order should not be made. The guidelines which a traffic commissioner will be considering are to suspend vocational entitlement for 14 days, 21 days if driving a commercial vehicle, to commence with immediate effect. Working mainly in the Benelux arena, the Euroliner-style trailers are specified with an easyoperation sliding roof and will carry mixed loads including coils, IBCs, cages and pallets. Also, Krone’s standard-fit Multi Lock loading system is designed to afford maximum strapping flexibility for coping with a wide range of loads. Krone said that with 126 strapping points along each side rave, each with a two-tonne capacity, the Multi Lock provides almost limitless strapping permutations, thereby increasing the trailers’ versatility while ensuring safe and secure

loading. Furthermore, for added safety and speed, the driver can secure and release the straps from inside the trailer while the curtains are closed. “Flexibility is key to ensuring we can match the same trailers to a host of different tasks,” said Active Transport’s Mark Yates. “With these trailers, we can put virtually anything on board and in any configuration, which gives us a ‘onetrailer-fits-all’ solution. “This means that not only can we pitch for a wider range of work, but also we don’t run the risk of trailers standing idle.” Yates said Profi Liners also offer a low tare weight. “With our Mercedes and Volvo units fully fuelled, we can achieve a payload of 28 tonnes – which of course comes into its own when carrying high density loads.”

ECO RUBBER CUTS FUEL BILL FOR DIXON Operator claims Michelin’s X Line Energy tyres have greatly improved its fuel economy

words, County Dublin-based haulier Dixon International has announced it is switching to Michelin X Line Energy tyres across its fleet after a trial showed it could slash fuel use by more than five per cent. The firm conducted a six-month trial on six tractor units – three using Michelin 315/70R22.5 X Line Energy tyres, the others using the fleet’s existing premium tyre brand fitment. Tested on long-distance, high-speed European routes in keeping with Dixon International’s typical operations, the Michelin-fitted tractors averaged a 5.2 per cent saving in fuel. This saving was so significant that the company has switched immediately to a full Michelin replacement policy, as well as specifying them as original equipment on new trucks and trailers. Michelin X Line Energy tyres have already

been factory fitted to 20 new Volvo FH tractors, entering service as part of the firm’s fleet of 110 trucks and 170 trailers. “We use around 500,000 litres of fuel a month,” said the firm’s director, Michael Dixon. “And based on the results of the tests, we could save more than 300,000 litres a year once the whole fleet has converted to Michelin. The cost of that fuel saving would be more than our yearly tyre bill. So by changing to Michelin, we’re effectively getting free tyres.” Dixon also plans to fit X Line Energy tyres to trailers within the fleet. “We are awaiting delivery of 30 new Schmitz Cargobull trailers arriving on X Line Energy tyres, so we hope to see even greater savings once the whole truck and trailer combination is operating on Michelin’s fuelsaving tyres,” he said.
