CV SHOW HIGHLIGHTS MERCEDES-BENZ SINOTRUK The German commercial vehicle manufacturer proved a major presence at the CV Show. Keen to present its full lineup of trucks to visitors, Merc had no fewer than 32 trucks on display inside and outside the NEC. On the stand inside the hall were high-spec Actros 6x2s, an Antos 4x2 rigid, Unimog U430, Econic skip-loader and lighter-weight FUSO Canter 3C13 chassis cab. Outside the arena, the manufacturer showcased a full collection of A-range trucks from Actros to Atego. Mercedes-Benz was also keen to emphasise the efficiency of its Euro 6 trucks by way of its Fuel Challenger programme, which compares real-world fuel efficiency of its vehicles in a like-for-like test against competing marques. Alongside new trucks, Mercedes also highlighted the quality of its used vehicles

DAF TRUCKS

DAF was back at the NEC this year with a focus on driving down operating costs. Flying under the DAF Transport Efficiency banner, the Dutch manufacturer highlighted a raft of new features and services designed to deliver cost savings for hauliers. Product developments and enhancements making their UK show debut included Eco Mode as standard, Silent Mode (on CF and XF Silent models), Predictive Cruise Control, Predictive Shifting, Advanced Emergency Braking System, Lane Departure Warning System, MX Engine Brake and Driver Performance Assistant. On the show stand was a CF 440 FTG Space Cab, XF 510 FT Super Space Cab, Construction CF 440 FAD Day Cab and an LF 180 FA Day Cab. Meanwhile, outside the NEC the manufacturer put four more trucks on display, each equipped with some of DAF’s latest hardware.

DAF CF 440 8x4 chassis with Day Cab and MX-11 engine drew plenty of attention

ISUZU TRUCK

Italian truck-maker Iveco exhibited a trio of trucks on its stand, led by a Stralis Hi-Way AS440S56TX/P 6x2 twin-steer tractor. Fitted with the company’s top-power 560 bhp engine (which uses Hi-SCR to avoid the need for EGR at Euro 6), the Stralis packed Iveco was pushing its EGRan array of on-board free Euro 6 engine technology extras, from touchscreen infotainment and telematics system to additional on-board comforts for the driver, aluminium air tanks, advanced safety aids (including a lane departure warning system) and adaptive cruise control. A typical fleet-spec Stralis Hi-Road AT440S42T/P 4x2 tractor unit joined it on the stand, along with a lighter weight 7.5-tonne Eurocargo 75E16 chassis. Alongside its trucks, the Italian firm debuted its Iveco Vision concept vehicle. Iveco said the vehicle represents the evolution of its Daily range, and is centred on low environmental impact mobility and a dual-energy system which self-adapts to the most suitable traction mode – one exclusively electric, ensuring zero local emissions and low noise levels, while the other is hybrid (thermoelectric) and suitable for longer journeys and extra-urban operations. Features include ‘see-through’ front pillars for improved driver visibility, plus a rear-view camera displayed on a panoramic screen above the windscreen.

It’s long been felt trucks produced in Asia aren’t up to competing on the European market. The wrong drivetrains, small cabs, poor designs are all criticisms which have been levelled at trucks designed and built in Asia over the past few years. Well wake up and Chinese construction chassis smell the coffee, debuted at Birmingham because Sinotruks – which are being imported by Harris Group of Ireland, the same company which is the main importer of Hino trucks – are none of these things and, at first glance, appear to offer a very decent product. According to the sales blurb, the A7-series offers a ‘great value-for-money, simple and reliable truck’. Taking a look inside the cab, it offers decent levels of comfort. The interior fit and finish is good, and the layout, instrumentation, seating etc all appear to be well up to European standards. An 8x4 mixer chassis on show featured a decent power plant at 380 bhp, ZF9S1820 transmission, leaf springs, ABS, disc brakes on the front axles, with drums on the rear.

CARTWRIGHT

Isuzu Truck took to the CV Show to launch its new Euro 6 12-tonne GVW Forward chassis. The new model features a compact overall footprint as well as a generous carrying capacity of 7952 kg. The compact Isuzu F120.240 4x2 rigid has a low chassis height and is available with either Isuzu’s Easyshift or manual transmissions. It packs the manufacturer’s economical Euro 6 four-cylinder 5.2-litre diesel engine producing 237 bhp and 765 Nm of torque. Also making its debut was Isuzu’s Euro 6 Urban N75.150(E) short-wheelbase chassis, featuring a BritTipp all-steel tipper body and a payload of 3780 kg. Isuzu said it’s part of a programme of pre-bodied tippers with full European Community Whole Vehicle Type Approval (ECWVTA) which are available off-the-shelf for customers that require a tipper in a hurry.

Trailer-maker Cartwright launched four new bodies at the show. The new products included a fleet curtainsider, aerodynamic home delivery vehicle, refrigerated trailer and a welfare vehicle for the construction sector. The home delivery vehicle features a new aerodynamic design and an ultra-lightweight body. The welfare vehicle is designed specifically for the construction sector and is capable of a 6+1 or 7+1 configuration, and comes complete with a built-in toilet cubicle and field kitchen. Cartwright’s other two units were exhibited outside the main exhibition hall. First was a fleet-specification single-deck curtainsider targeted at the general haulage market. Standard features include an EN-XL rated body, aerodynamic front aerofoil and aerodynamic sloping roof. Second was a refrigerated trailer which Cartwright said is available in single and double-deck configuration.

MICHELIN Tyre-maker Michelin showed off its 17.5 inch

and 19.5 inch tyres at this year’s show, following the roll-out of additional sizes in its all-new X Multi range. Six of the new tyres featured on Michelin’s stand, including three multi-position and three drive patterns. The company also launched its new ‘Pence Per Kilometre’ (PPK) tyre management contracts, which it reckons will save customers cash through improved efficiency. The fuel-saving commitment will be available on EFFITIRES contracts when fitting premium low-rolling-resistance tyres, which Michelin said makes it the first provider to contractually commit to fuel savings on its tyre management contracts.

AIR1 Additive firm Air1 was promoting the importance of quality AdBlue and contamination issues at this year’s show. With the introduction of Euro 6, many more vehicles are adopting SCR technology – meaning quality urea and full traceability is essential. Air1 was hoping to drive the point home with a display of a commercial vehicle catalyst, which had been sectioned so visitors could see exactly how fine and delicate a catalyst really is – and why it is imperative that quality AdBlue is used.

range of commercial vehicle wash equipment, ranging from its own products to those of its sister companies Working Water, Wickham Gensol and the newly acquired Archway TCS. The firm said the range was designed to tackle any shape of vehicle, from the simple to the most complex and awkward, and on any type of site. Products include automatic rollover and drive-through machines, underbody washes, jet washes and wash-down units.

It’s hoped the permitted 10 mph increase for HGVs on single-carriageway roads will help improve road safety industry as it will allow operators to use the additional speed, where it is safe to do so, and gain running cost benefits.” However, road safety charity Brake said it was disappointed with the new limits. “The decision to increase HGV speed limits is short-sighted and runs against work to more effectively manage traffic speeds and reduce casualties on our roads,” said Brake campaigns manager, Gary Rae. “The relationship between speed and casualties is a proven one, so allowing the largest vehicles on our roads to

reach higher speeds more often risks more deaths, serious injuries and additional cost to the taxpayer. “The government itself has admitted that this move will likely have no economic or road safety benefit,” Rae concluded. “It is a move designed to legitimise the dangerous behaviour of those who already break the speed limit while putting the safety of the law-abiding majority second. “It sets a dangerous precedent that if traffic laws are persistently flouted, the government would rather change them than enforce them.”

For the new Hitachi trains, they ran at just under 26 m and operated under STGO Category 3 load conditions. “This was a very high-profile movement and the trailers performed well throughout,” said Allelys transport manager, Robert Ford. “You can’t acquire a trailer for this kind of work off the shelf; we liaised closely with the design team at Andover to get the specification just right. capacity neck and a 60-tonne rear bogie, with each axle rated at 15 tonnes and built by Tecma in Italy – selected for its ability to make the specialist solid axles Andover required for the job. The two trailers also feature a robust Goldhofer steering system, which can reach full lock even when loaded and stationary. Also key to the specification is a hydraulic suspension, which allows for 260 mm of travel and can cope with the punishing action of driving across rail lines with a heavy load, while also offering height adjustment for loading and unloading. The trailers collected each carriage of the new train from a pair of rubber-tyred shipping bogies, which had securely held the 125 mph train on its journey by sea from Japan.

SPECIAL-EDITION TGX IS NO ROAR DEAL

G

erman truck-maker MAN has revealed a new ‘100 Years Edition’ of its flagship TGX D38. The special-edition truck will be available with 520 or 560 bhp engines and special equipment includes highlypolished stainless steel front and side bars with integrated LED accent lighting, oversize light bar with four halogen high-beam headlights, and stainless steel cab steps. On the exterior, the D38 features two flaming lions on both sides of the cab – and the lion motif continues on the seat coverings inside. “The ‘100 Years Edition’ offers the unique performance and efficiency of the TGX D38 with the added features of a real eye-chatcher – and all ex-works,” said Heinz-Jürgen Löw, director of sales & marketing, MAN. “I am already looking forward to seeing these trucks on the street.” The truck was premiered at MAN’s Trucknology Days in Munich, which took place over March 19-21. The manufacturer said it

has produced new paint colours for the model: MAN stone grey metallic, MAN D38 red, MAN steel blue metallic and MAN crystal white metallic. Dura-Bright EVO aluminium wheels are also fitted. In-cab comfort is taken care of with airsprung comfort seats for the driver and codriver with lumbar vertebra support, shoulder adjustment and heating. Sun blinds, reading lights, foot supports and armrests are also included, along with a multi-function steering wheel, independent heating and a coolbox. MAN’s ‘Plus’ infotainment package is also included, which combines upgraded sound system, MAN Media Truck Advanced navigation radio with specialist truck-navigation software, USB input for music and a charger for smartphones, infra-red remote control and Bluetooth hands-free system. MAN will be launching the ‘100 Years Edition’ TGX D38 throughout Europe, with the first customers taking delivery of the trucks in July 2015.

MILLERS PULLS IN TOP- MOUNTAIN HIGH ON T TWINS POWER RECOVERY SPECIAL E ast Midland waste management recycling firm Mid UK Recycling Ltd has added two 44-tonne Renault Range T460 6x2 units with walking-floor trailers to its 70-strong, Scania-dominated fleet. Supplied by Thompson Commercials in Boston, the new Range Ts joined Mid UK Recycling’s transport division, Mountain Transport. They are the first units supplied with factory-fitted load indicators which show both the unit’s and trailer’s weights on the dashboard, and are coupled to two French-manufactured Legras FMA15 moving-floor trailers. The Range Ts collect waste residues from across the UK for recycling or further processing into recovered fuels, with the

ancashire-based Millers of Longton Ltd has taken delivery of its first-ever brandnew recovery vehicle – a Volvo FH16750 6x4 rigid equipped with a 40-tonne rotator fitted by Boniface Engineering of Thetford, Norfolk. The truck was supplied by Thomas Hardie Commercials of Preston, for which Millers has carried out recovery services over the past 10 years– often using its Volvo FH12, which it purchased four years ago. “The FH12 is now 11 years old, but it has proved to be such a dependable workhorse,” said Millers director, Jack Miller. “Based on this experience and our relationship with Volvo, it

was really a ‘fait accompli’ that for our firstever brand-new truck we’d turn to Volvo.” Since its arrival at Millers, the top-power FH16-750 rigid has proven a worthy addition to the fleet. “This really is a fantastic truck,” Miller said. “Everything about it is lovely. It’s a good truck to be in, a good truck to drive and I would say the 750 is ‘top of the game’ in terms of horsepower. In fact, ‘it does everything it says on the tin’. “Ultimately, our business is about being relied upon when something’s gone wrong,” he concluded. “Our customers are relying on us, often in difficult circumstances, so we need the ultimate in dependability from our vehicles.”

IMMIGRANT CRISIS REACHES “EPIDEMIC” LEVELS

T

he problem of illegal immigrants in the French port of Calais attempting to gain access to the UK by boarding trucks en route to ferry terminals has reached “epidemic” proportions, according to new figures released by the Daily Express. The British newspaper said border officials are catching more than 100

stowaways every day – and said critics are now labelling the problem a “national security crisis”. The Express reported 30,000 migrants were caught attempting illegal entry into the UK between April and December 2014, representing a rise of 57 per cent over 2013 figures.

trucks being assessed alongside a Scania and an MAN for fuel efficiency, driver acceptance, service and downtime. “We have previously had a great experience with a Renault Premium and have recently read great things about the new Euro 6 vehicles in the press and had a favourable demonstration,” said transport director, Nick Mountain. “It was these factors, together with a great package from Thompson Commercials, that persuaded me to go with the two Renault Range T vehicles. “The vehicles have been on the road a few weeks and the drivers have been very receptive – in fact, one of them who has been driving for over 20 years commented it was the best truck he’d ever driven!” Mountain’s good experience with a Renault Premium helped sway its recent T purchase

What’s your view? Star Letter PASS MASTER Firstly thank you for printing my letter – I was chuffed to see it in issue 339. I am also pleased to be able to inform you that I have recently passed my Initial DCPC Module 2 and have booked my Module 4 for early next month. I found a training package on the internet that has been very useful. It is provided by Driving Theory 4 All and can be found at www.drivingtheory4all.co.uk. It cost me £18 for 60 days’ access to all of the reading material needed and 60 practice case studies, each comprising of between five and nine questions.

LOOKING FOR A HERO Can anyone please help me find the lorry driver who saved my daughter’s life on the night of Friday, March 27? Charlotte is a 19-year-old medical student from Liverpool University and was travelling home for Easter on Friday night when her bright yellow coloured VW Polo broke down in the slow lane on the south-bound M6 roadworks. With no hard shoulder, and vehicles passing her in the only other lane at 50 mph, there was no escape route for her. She was distraught and near hysterical when a hero lorry driver in the outside lane stopped his lorry, holding up the oncoming traffic, and he pushed my daughter in

While none of the scenarios in the practice case studies are the same as in the actual test, they are brilliant for getting you in the right frame of mind for the test and as a heads-up as to what type of questions are coming your way. Using this package, I achieved a score of 48 out of the 50 questions – which is testament to its quality. Again, many thanks for printing my letter and thanks for a brilliant paper. her vehicle – yes, PUSHED her BY HIMSELF – to safety some way up the roadworks. It took seconds, but this kind, gentle giant of a man saved my daughter that night. Charlotte was too emotional to take his details, so I need help to find him so we can thank him for his act of heroism. Perhaps your readers can help? Was he your dad/uncle/brother/husband? Many, many thanks, Suzan Croxford Via Facebook If anyone can help track down this hero driver, let us know at the usual address and we’ll pass it on –ed.

DVD The Ultimate Collection ARTIST: Paul Simon LABEL: Sony Music Price: £10 (Amazon)

CD

Strange as it may seem, this is the first single-disc collection of the best of Paul Simon’s solo work and tracks from Simon & Garfunkel. It’s an eclectic mix that spans a range of musical styles and brings together a host of classics, from You Can Call Me Al and Graceland to The Boxer and The Sound of Silence. Rating:  Good stuff indeed.

Author Colin Peck has put together a fine compendium of trucks at work on the roads in Britain and on the Continent during the heady days of the 1980s. Printed by Veloce as part of its Those were the days… series, the paperback book runs at 96 pages and includes over 100 cracking (mostly full colour) photos of lorries on the job alongside some insightful (and nostalgic) information about the manufacturers active at the time. British marques covered in the manufacturer A-Z include Bedford, Dennis, ERF, Foden, Ford, Leyland, Scammell and Seddon-Atkinson, alongside European producers such as Astra, Berliet, DAF, Faun, FTF, Ginaf, Iveco, MagirusDeutz, MAN, Merc, Scania, Tatra, Volvo and lots more. Comprehensive and compelling, this is well worth picking up.

CD

Harem Scarem’s 13th release (really? Never would have guessed!) is slightly heavier than expected, and far less melodic than frontman Harry Hess’ 2012 solo release Living In Yesterday. As for Thirteen, if you’re a fan of Whitesnake or maybe Def Leppard, buy it – you’ll love it. Rating: 

DVSA DELIVERS NEW LOADING GUIDE FOR DRIVERS

T

he Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has produced a new guide to help commercial vehicle drivers and operators transport loads securely. The guide, which DVSA said has been developed with co-operation with the transport industry, sets out information such as who’s responsible for load securing; the consequences of poor load security; and how DVSA enforces the rules. At the same time, it aims to give practical advice about loading different types of vehicles and carrying different types of loads. The guide includes videos so drivers can find out what DVSA looks for when it stops a vehicle at the roadside, and how different load securing systems can be used to ensure safe carriage. DVSA said during 2013, it issued over 2000 prohibitions to vehicles which presented a road

safety risk because of their load security. “Everybody involved in the transport chain needs a good understanding of load securing,” said DVSA chief executive, Alastair Peoples. “The guide shows examples of good practice that can be used, and the serious consequences of poor load securing. “DVSA will continue to take action against drivers and operators who transport unsecure loads. I encourage all operators to take time to read the guide and follow the practical advice.” Jack Semple, director of policy at the Road Haulage Association (RHA), added: “We are pleased to have been involved in the production of this guide, particularly in ensuring the responsibility of the consignor, who is loading the vehicle, is given equal prominence to that of the operator and of the driver.” To view the guide online, visit http://bit.ly/1HUsAKy

I have recently been asked a few questions regarding the use of red diesel, in particular in works vehicles. There is some very -useful byNews HMRC this topic. 13 - Hinchcliffes Solicitors Accident guidance Spot half pagegiven Truckstop - Issueon 341.indd 1 The first thing to say is that as a rule of thumb, apart from specific scenarios, you must always use duty-paid fuel. So, what are rebated fuels, and can they be used as fuel in a road vehicle? Rebated heavy oils include gas oil, usually marked and dyed, also called red diesel and kerosene. Broadly speaking, you cannot use that as fuels in a road vehicle. It is against the law to use these oils (for example, gas oil or kerosene) as fuel in a road vehicle unless you get a licence from HMRC to pay the difference between the full rate of duty on the fuel and the rebated rate actually paid on the fuel used. There are some circumstances whereby a vehicles can use rebated heavy oils as road fuel. However, only vehicles which are specifically excluded from the legal definition of ’road vehicle’ may use rebated heavy oil as road fuel. These are known as ‘excepted vehicles’. Unless the vehicle is included as an ‘excepted vehicle’, it counts as a ‘road vehicle’ and must use fully duty-paid fuel. There are circumstances whereby it is possible to repay rebate to allow rebated oil to be used on the road. In exceptional circumstances, you can repay the rebate on

rebated heavy oil and then legally use it as road fuel, or, if the oil is kerosene, as fuel to propel ‘excepted vehicles’ or as fuel in the engine of a road vehicle. In order to do this, you must have a licence from HMRC, known as a ‘red diesel licence’ before you can pay the rebate on rebated heavy oil. Red diesel licences are primarily designed for ‘excepted vehicles’ that normally do not travel on public roads at all. HMRC give this authority only where a vehicle must occasionally use public roads in exceptional circumstances, where HMRC accepts it would be unnecessarily obstructive to require the user to take the necessary action to avoid using rebated heavy oil on the public road. Any anticipated use of the public road must be a rare and very limited occurrence. Each application will be judged on its merit, but it is unlikely that HMRC will authorise your application for a licence if you expect to use the public road regularly or as part of a routine. HMRC is also likely to refuse any applications in respect of vehicles that have no entitlement to use red diesel under any circumstances. To come back to the issue regarding ‘works trucks’, these vehicles are considered to be ‘excepted vehicles’. To qualify as a ‘works truck’, the vehicle must be a goods

vehicle designed for use in private premises. It must only be used on public roads: (a) for carrying goods between private premises and a 13/04/2015 vehicle on a road within one kilometre of those premises (b) in passing from one part of private premises to another (c) in passing between private premises and other private premises in a case where the premises are within one kilometre of each other, or (d) in connection with road works at the site of the works or within one kilometre of the site of the works In the context of this category, a goods vehicle is a vehicle constructed or adapted for use and used for the conveyance of goods or burden of any description (whether in the course of trade or not). Typical works trucks include fork lift trucks, ‘shunt’ vehicles designed to haul articulated trailers and their goods around sites, and special vehicles which lift and move freight containers around sites. Typically, the vehicle will have a maximum speed well below road traffic speeds of 30+ mph and will lack many of the features, such as braking and lighting systems, required under the Road Traffic Act 1988. A tractor towing a trailer is not a works truck.

CONTAINER MERCS MAKE THE GRADE DJB Haulage chose Actros 2545 with BigSpace cabs for its latest fleet additions

W

ells-based operator DJB Haulage has placed an order for five more Mercedes-Benz Actros tractor units as a result of its current tractors’ “outstanding” fuel economy and positive driver feedback. The operator is part of the ADMP Group, which has also commissioned another 28 Actros over the last two years. The majority of these vehicles also wear the DJB Haulage livery, while the rest work in Willmotts Transport colours. All are Actros 2545 models with flatfloored BigSpace cabs and 449 bhp straightsix engines with PowerShift 3 automated transmissions. The latest arrivals are based at DJB’s new two-acre depot on Southampton’s Marchwood Industrial Estate, and pull 40 ft and 20 ft skeletal trailers, including specialised ‘splitter’ versions. The operator moves over 15,000 containers a year for shipping lines and freight forwarders. Willmotts Transport, meanwhile, operates from the logistics centre at the Group’s headquarters on the Quarry Way Business Park in Shepton Mallett, Somerset, and offers a wide range of transport and warehouse storage services, with a particular focus on the retail sector. It

is also a member of the Palletforce network. Willmotts Transport and DJB Haulage run a combined fleet of 80 trucks, all but nine of them 44-tonne tractor units. As recently as 2011, only four of its vehicles were by Mercedes-Benz. Today, more than 30 wear three-pointed stars, with two other marques accounting for the remainder. “With regular returns of 9-10 mpg the Actros is, on the whole, the most fuelefficient vehicle on our fleet,” said Group transport manager, Andy Tuck. “The latest Euro 6 versions are proving every bit as economical to operate as their predecessors. “Our drivers are also very happy with their roomy, well-appointed cabs, while the strikingly modern appearance of the Actros on the road can only enhance our own company’s image.”

WARNED DAF: TRUCK ‘PLATOONING’ WILL DRIVERS AS THIEVES TARGET CASH IN THE CAB AUTOMATE DRIVING DUTIES T T ruck-maker DAF has demonstrated its ‘EcoTwin’ automated truck concept in front of Dutch and Belgian government officials on the N270 near Helmond. The trial involved two truck combinations – wirelessly linked via WiFi – driving a short distance from each other, with the driver in the second truck not being required to accelerate, brake and steer. According to DAF, this was the first such demonstration to take place in the Netherlands. The concept of two trucks cooperating by driving a short distance from each other using automated driving technology has been dubbed ‘2-Truck platooning’. DAF said the intention of its EcoTwin experiment with TNO – the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research – was to show the second vehicle is technically able to follow a short distance from the front vehicle, using radar and camera information, thanks to wireless communication between the two vehicles. During this process, the second vehicle can automatically accelerate, brake and even steer. The manufacturer said the objective of the project is to reduce the gap between the two truck combinations as far as possible, so fuel savings of 10 per cent can be achieved in the long term, along with equivalent reductions in CO² emissions. “Just because we have showed ‘automated platooning’ with two trucks is technically

feasible, that doesn’t mean we are actually there yet,” said DAF’s chief engineer, Ron Borsboom. “We still need to do quite a lot of development work to ensure the technology is completely reliable in any situation. “Issues like legislation, liability and

ruck drivers are being warned regarding the dangers of carrying large amounts of cash for on-the-road expenses and fuel purchases following a spate of robberies targeted at taxi drivers in recent weeks. With truck drivers having to take regular breaks because of road safety laws – often in remote places such as lay-bys – the potential risk of becoming a victim of thieves is significant. Fuel card provider UK Fuels said over the last month, taxi drivers in Dundee, Belfast, Edinburgh and Milton Keynes have been the target of robberies. It said they are easy targets for thieves as they’re known to carry cash, and stressed that other commercial drivers can be seen as ‘soft’ targets as they carry cash for fuel and other expenses. “Sadly, it is not uncommon to hear reports of drivers being targeted by criminals for carrying large amounts of cash,” said UK Fuels marketing director, Jakes de Kock. “Obviously drivers need to be able to pay for fuel, hotels, food on the go and so on, but it’s important for businesses to look into alternative methods of payment, such as fuel cards.” He said fuel cards can also help protect operators from internal fraud, as all expenditure is tracked and recorded. “It’s a sad fact that some drivers see expenses as an opportunity to subsidise their wage,” de Kock said. “Fuel obviously provides one of the best chances, as without monitoring in place, it’s difficult to say exactly how much fuel drivers are actually using.”

The Kuma Matrix is a powerful 12/24V boosted omnidirectional TV antenna that’s capable of receiving both digital and analogue terrestrial signals, and offers high receiver sensitivity and a high gain level from its built-in signal amplifier. The Matrix may not be the sleekest looking TV aerial on the market, but having so much bare wire on show is one of the reasons it far outperforms plastic-encased 12V TV aerials. The omnidirectional design eliminates the need to locate your nearest TV or radio transmitter, and ensures the Matrix performs well in all conditions. Although it’s designed for permanent mounting, the Matrix is so powerful it can simply be placed on the dashboard when being used and put away when not. WILLIAMS SETS SAIL WITH NEW XFS N

ewly branded Williams Transport Services, part of the Williams Shipping Group, has taken on a mixed fleet of top-spec Euro 6 DAF XF tractor units to furnish its specialist logistics and general haulage operations. Trucks include three XF510 FTG Super Space Cabs plated at 65 tonnes, two 44-tonne XF460 FTG Space Cabs and an XF460 FTR Space Cab with 47-tonne HIAB Crane. The new DAFs are the first to wear the company’s new livery and entered service on March 1, running throughout the UK and the Northern European mainland. Now an entirely DAF operation, Williams’ current Euro 6 trucks replace existing Euro 5 models, which the firms said had given “ultrareliable” service. Williams Shipping is a multi-disciplined operation, including towage and marine services, container hire and sales, warehousing, marine lubricant supply and an extensive specialist trailer hire fleet. The firm’s truck fleet has been all DAF for over 30 years.

“We have a number of heavy-haulage trucks performing some specialist tasks which demand some unusual chassis specifications,” said company director, Jonathan Williams. “Our local DAF dealer, Adams Morey, bends over backwards to ensure we get the precise equipment for our needs. “DAFaid is just so quick off the mark,” he added. “Having a well-drilled, highly-motivated roadside assistance service behind you is worth its weight in gold. Peace-of-mind counts for a lot in that respect.” Williams Shipping operates a range of specialist trailer equipment, including flat-beds and low-loaders, to accommodate a diverse array of loads. “Our drivers have to be multi-skilled,” added Williams. “Quay-side manoeuvres are hazardous enough, but our guys show enormous expertise outside the cab, too. Williams drivers have to be expert in securing awkward loads. Load restraint is a science in itself and, for obvious reasons, it’s crucial to our reputation.”

ornwall-based HR Jasper & Son has added a 480 bhp Euro 6 Iveco Stralis Hi-Road rigid to its fleet, which the firm said will enable it to step up deliveries to London as the business expands. The family-run firm, which has operated since 1903, specialises in providing lamb for the wholesale and restaurant trade. It runs a fleet of six vehicles, all of which are Iveco. “We have seen increasing demand for our lamb from London and we needed a vehicle which has the power to cope with the hills we get around Cornwall, but which can also tackle inner-urban deliveries,” said transport manager, Steve Rogers. “We get great performance from our Stralis tractors, so we asked Iveco for a solution to our problem – and it proposed this high-powered Stralis rigid with a rearsteering axle.” The vehicle was supplied by Pannell Commercials and is mounted with a Gray & Adams reefer body, along with a Carrier Transicold Supra 1150 temperature control unit. HR Jasper & Son sources lamb from farms across the West Country to ensure it supplies only the highest quality meat for restaurants and wholesalers UK-wide. “Our fleet will make seven trips a week to London,” Rogers continued. “Iveco has provided us with the perfect spec truck for this journey, as it allows us to use routes that would be impossible for articulated vehicles.” The firm’s latest Stralis is powered by Iveco’s Cursor 11 engine with HI-SCR aftertreatment and will cover up to 150,000 miles a year. The company said it expects to keep the vehicle in service for eight years. All repair and maintenance will be undertaken by Pannell Commercials.

Company owner Glen Moore added: “We will have eight MANs in our fleet when this order is completed, and we hope this will be the start of a continued relationship with MAN. “The vehicles are lighter than our previous fleet and have given us a greater payload, which we appreciate,” Moore concluded. “The competitive deal and the three-year warranty helped seal the deal.”

BLUE ARROW’S

CHARITY

‘DRIVE WITH PRIDE’

Campaigning for the basic rights of lorry drivers

B

lue Arrow, one of the UK’s largest recruiters of lorry drivers, has just released a petition aimed at the Department for Transport challenging them to set and enforce minimum standards for lorry drivers’ toilet facilities across the UK.

Sign and share the petition here: tinyurl.com/drivewithpride

Addressing the needs of the industry

The motivation behind this campaign is clear and simple: it’s an issue that matters to drivers. Working closely with Gillian Kemp, founder of Truckers’ Toilets UK, Blue Arrow has built a body of evidence that illustrates the extent of the problem. What’s also become clear is that the availability of clean, working toilet facilities is preventing much-needed new drivers from joining the industry. Mark Manaton, Blue Arrow’s CEO, said: “Lorry drivers are the backbone of the UK’s infrastructure, and yet aren’t currently getting the basic right of access to clean, working toilets. We know first-hand that drivers are suffering. Our petition is the first step in our campaign to do something about it. It’s also vital in terms of the impending driver shortage – how can we attract young people to an

industry that can’t even offer them a clean loo?”

A target of 100,000 signatures

The aim is to secure the 100,000 signatures required to put pressure on the government to discuss this problem. But more fundamentally, the aim is to raise awareness of this issue, because it’s rarely discussed or understood outside the driving industry. The general public need to know the truth.

A promise to refurbish a truck stop Whatever the outcome of the petition, Blue Arrow is going to refurbish a truck stop toilet facility, and is calling on drivers to share their experiences of LGV toilet facilities across the UK. Despite only being released very recently, the petition has already secured a huge amount of support.

orklift truck manufacturer MOFFETT (part of Cargotec’s Hiab business) has said it will be donating and auctioning a special edition 70th anniversary truckmounted forklift for charity as part of its 70th anniversary celebrations. The special-edition truck will be a oneoff build featuring a custom paint finish in platinum silver and anniversary edition branding. The model type and specification will be selected to complement the fleet requirements of the winning customer. The manufacturer said the money raised from the winning bid will be donated to charities chosen by the winners and runners-up of the MOFFETT World Championship 2015. Qualification rounds began in April across Europe, South Africa, Australia and the USA, with the

championship finals being held in October in Dundalk, Ireland. “We encourage all of our customers to be generous with their auction bids, because MOFFETT will donate the entire winning bid to charity,” said Keith Quigley, senior vice president, truck mounted forklifts, Hiab. “By asking the finalists of the MOFFETT World Championship to choose their favourite charities in their home towns, we hope many local people will really benefit from the money raised. “We value our close working partnerships with our customers, and we think this is a fine way to celebrate our 70th anniversary.” The online charity auction will run until September 30, 2015 and bidders can find more information – and pledge their bids – by registering at moffettjubilee.com

And so, this issue we’re off to the Norfolk Broads and the picturesque waterside village of Horning, on the River Bure. This true old-fashioned English village boasts its own ferry, marina, shops, restaurant and tea rooms, as well as the beautiful church of St Benedict which was established

Based on the magical series of children’s books written by local author and creator of BeWILDerwood, Tom Blofeld, this is an experience not to be missed. If you’re looking for something a little more sedate, Burnham Thorpe is the birthplace of Horatio Nelson and offers a peaceful village to explore and All Saints Church, where Nelson’s father was rector. Close by, there is the windmill and watermill at Burnham Overy, or perhaps discover the main village of Burnham Market, about four miles from the sea. HAD AN ACCIDENT?

TRUCKSTOP NEWS

THE BIG

ARE YOU STILL FULLY COVERED BY YOUR INSURANCE? T here is a question all truck drivers need to ask themselves: ‘Have I been involved in a road traffic accident while driving my LGV at work?’ This would appear to be a very straightforward question to answer. However, if you have answered ‘yes’, you may find you are no longer fully covered by your insurer should you then have an accident in your own vehicle. This is likely to be the case if you have renewed your own insurance policy since the accident and failed to declare it. Andrew Drewary CMILT, consultant accident analyst working on behalf of 3Sixty Fleet, says: “Most lorry drivers who have had a road traffic accident in their employer’s LGV believe they only need report it to their transport manager. However, this is not the case – and failure to notify the insurer of their own vehicle or any policy they are a named driver, could have far-reaching implications.” Following a road traffic accident while driving a company LGV, lorry drivers will report the matter to their transport manager and complete the obligatory Accident Report Form. In most cases, this is the only thing they believe they have to do. However, for the more serious types of accident, they may be interviewed by an investigator from their employer’s insurance company or face

criminal driving offences following a police investigation. “Regardless how serious an accident is or how formal or informal the investigation is following an accident in their employers LGV, all lorry drivers have a responsibility to report the accident to the insurer of their own vehicle,” Drewary says. “The lorry driver should not be misled into believing it is just a matter for their employer to deal with. Failure to notify their own insurer could mean they are no longer fully insured to drive their own vehicle.” There is one main reason why most lorry drivers who have had an accident while driving their employer’s LGV do not report an accident to their own insurer. This is because they believe there is no need to, as the accident has not involved the vehicle they own and insure personally. To a degree, this is may seem a reasonable enough reason, but on the whole it is not a very good excuse for a lorry driver to use. On closer inspection of their own insurance policy, it will clearly state: ‘If you have an accident you must report it immediately.’ It does not specify that it has to be an accident in the vehicle they own. Most insurance policies are renewed automatically and the renewal information will normally advise that you do not have to do anything if you are happy with the new

premium. However, how many lorry drivers have received the renewal notification without giving another thought about the accident they had in their employer’s LGV? “There is a well-publicised driver shortage within the industry which is likely to last for a few more years,” Drewary continues. “Lorry drivers and their employers have invested a lot of time and money with Driver CPC training to secure their futures. However, failure to report an accident you have had to your own insurer when driving your employer’s LGV could mean you are no longer fully insured. Most people will only find this out when it is too late, and the consequences could be very costly indeed.” Failure to report an accident could affect the company as much as the lorry driver. Employers should look to introduce awareness seminars to bring this to the attention of their employees. As for the lorry driver, they need to report all accidents they are involved in to their insurer so they remain fully insured. Thereafter, they need to co-operate fully with any investigation their employer’s insurer conducts. This is to ensure they are not held liable for the accident, or at least to try and mitigate their liability. This will then reduce the effect the accident will have on their own policy premium or that of a policy on which they are a named driver.

FRANCE TO ADOPT DRIVER MINIMUM WAGE REGS

F

rench authorities are moving to apply a minimum wage on foreign drivers operating in the country in a step that follows Germany’s introduction of similar legislation at the start of the year. Germany controversially introduced a minimum wage of €8.50 per hour on January 1, and France has now confirmed it plans to impose a similar minimum hourly wage of €9.61 for drivers involved in cabotage operations within its borders. However, according to David Williams, the managing director of freight-forwarder Rhenus UK, the introduction of local wage rates for drivers travelling across EU territories is a backwards step “that goes against the ethos of the common, single market”. Williams added that the new rules could have a major impact on the UK’s export drive and add unnecessary red tape, bureaucracy and cost to Europe’s faltering emergence from the recession. “The free movement of people and

goods was one of the central pillars of the European market concept,” Williams said. “These moves bring complexity and cost to a trading bloc that is central to the prosperity of the UK.” Williams said he believed that if fully enacted, these raises in wage rates could increase haulage costs to EU countries by as much as five per cent. But he added that while there would be an inevitable hike in overall transport costs, there are steps UK firms can take to minimise the impact. “Our planning department has already started to examine new routes and load factors to minimise the number of milk runs within certain territories,” Williams said. “Our understanding is that any loading or delivery of goods within a country is classed as cabotage, attracting potentially higher local wage rates; while drivers passing through a region are currently exempt. “Luckily, we deal with high enough volumes to allow us to go direct with limited stops at distribution centres.”
