TRUCKSTOP NEWS
ISSUE 329 AUTUMN 2014
DCPC DEADLINE ALMOST UP
D
rivers are being warned again of the impending arrival of the Driver CPC deadline, which is now only weeks away. After September 10, 2014, anyone wishing to drive a truck professionally will have to have completed their Driver Certificate of Professional Competence and hold a Driver Qualification Card (DQC), which is handed over on completion of 35 hours of periodic training. Without a DQC, drivers will be unable to legally drive a commercial vehicle after the deadline. Drivers who are still to complete their training are being urged to sign up to courses without delay, as there are still spaces left – though time is of the essence, as places are anticipated to go fast as the deadline gets closer.
The Freight Transport Association (FTA) said that at the beginning of 2014, it saw an increase in the rate drivers registered for training – with almost 15,000 new drivers who decided it was time to make a start on Driver CPC registering in the month of February alone. And according to DVSA figures, at the beginning of May approximately 750,000 HGV and PCV drivers were active on its driver training database, with an excess of 10,000 drivers coming onto the system every month. “The clear message to anyone who hasn’t completed their Driver CPC training yet – even if they haven’t started it – is that it’s not too late,” said FTA’s director of compliance management, June Powell.
With the deadline imminent, the FTA also repeated its warning to all freight operators that they should expect no exemptions or last-minute reprieve, stating the DVSA
will enforce Driver CPC and the traffic commissioners will take action against drivers and operators who do not take it seriously.
MAN UPGRADES TGX FLAGSHIP G erman truck manufacturer MAN has launched a new flagship truck. Dubbed TGX D38, it is designed as a high-performance option for ‘challenging’ transport tasks. It boasts a complete new driveline, including a new 15.2-litre D3876 in-line sixcylinder engine. Based on the same structure as the D20/D26 engines, it is available in outputs of 520 bhp, 560 bhp and 640 bhp. MAN claims the new powertrains offer lower AdBlue consumption (by up to 65 per cent) and an overall improvement of some three per cent in fuel consumption. The new trucks use a ZF AS-Tronic2 transmission, which is custom-built to suit the nature of the work the trucks are designed to do. A two-stage turbocharger offers full torque at just 930 rpm and makes the engine suitable for use in trucks suited to a wide range of operations, including long haul, construction and heavy haulage. GPS (Global Positioning System) incorporated into the cruise control system analyses approaching inclines and downhill sections of the route, adjusting the truck’s speed to achieve the best fuel efficiency.
Dubbed EfficientCruise, MAN claims – particularly with trucks used on long haul or distribution operations – fuel consumption can be lowered by as much as six per cent without loss of time over the route. The new engine incorporates various technologies to aid better performance and fuel economy – and make the units lighter and ultra-reliable. Domed valves increase
strength and remove flexing when they open and close, and MAN says the engine is of ‘stiffer’ construction, with steel pistons and a rigid crankcase, and a head designed to cope with the greater stresses of Euro 6. It uses a high-pressure fuel injection system developed in conjunction with Bosch, while ‘top-down’ cooling feeds coolant into the cylinder head directly to the areas under thermal stress. Use of high-tensile materials has shaved 160 kg off the weight of the new engine when compared to MAN’s Euro 5 D28 V8 motor. An ally flywheel is fitted, with cast engine mounting brackets, and the valve cover and sump made from highly durable impact-resistant plastic to help reduce overall weight, while engine noise emissions are also considerably lower due to the acoustic structure of the sump. An exhaust valve brake (EVB) offers up to 340 kW of braking power, while a Turbo EVB with increased braking power up to 600 kW is available for heavy-duty TGX D38 trucks. BrakeMatic controls the engine brake, Intarder (with 3500 Nm of braking torque and 500 kW of braking power) and service
brakes, which all work together to increase safety and lessen wear and tear on brake pads and discs and thus reduce vehicle downtime. Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) comes as standard with the MAN TGX D38. A full range of wheelbases – tractor unit and rigid chassis – and axle configurations make the TGX D38 suitable for a wide range of demanding transport operations. Available in both right- and left-hand drive form, the new TGX D38 uses MAN’s ‘wide’ cab line-up, including XL, XLX and XXL. It will be debuted at the IAA Show in Hanover, Germany in September, where MAN will also show off its 640 bhp version (a 41.640 8x4/4 D38 heavyduty tractor with gross train weight of up to 250 tonnes) for the first time.
HUWS GRAY EXPANDS DAF FLEET ‘MISFUELLING MISHAPS’ COST
B
uilders’ merchants Huws Gray has invested in 14 new DAF trucks worth approximately £1.2 million for its network of 44 depots across Wales and North West England. The new trucks will be the first Euro 6 models on its fleet of over 80 vehicles, and will be used for daily deliveries of materials to households and construction sites. The 14-truck order includes one DAF FA LF 180 16-tonne tipper, eight DAF FA LF 220 18-tonne dropsides and five DAF FAN CF330 26-tonne dropsides. All vehicles with dropside bodies (by Commercial Body Specialists Ltd) are also fitted with HIAB cranes for loading and unloading of materials wherever they’re required. “We’ve always found DAF trucks suit our job better, plus we’ve had less problems with them and always been able to get hold of any parts quickly – even going to collect them from the factory in Leyland, if necessary,” said Mike Cholomondley, Huws Gray transport manager. “We’ve looked at other trucks, but some of them were a bit too technical for our type of work and too slow to supply parts.
“The new vehicles will definitely reduce our carbon footprint and help us deliver goods even more efficiently and on time.” The new vehicles have been fully liveried and will be based at Huws Gray depots including Wrexham, Porthmadog, Wallasey, Moreton, Aintree, Bolton, Flint, Wrightington and Derby.

MOTORISTS MILLIONS
ritish motorists are unnecessarily paying out over £60 million a year in wasted fuel, repairs and follow-on costs after mistakenly putting the wrong fuel in their cars at the pump. New figures from Halfords Autocentres revealed as many as 123,000 vehicles a year in the UK suffer a ‘misfuelling mishap’ – in many cases leaving them with a hefty bill from £500 to over £3000. While the rising cost of motoring means that 47 per cent of drivers spend most of their disposable income on motoring, in the last 12 months a motorist has put the wrong fuel in their car approximately once every four minutes. “Diesel cars now make up almost 50 per cent of cars sold in the UK and have become more refined to cater for customers used to quieter petrol-powered cars who are making a switch to more economical diesels to keep their motoring costs down,” said Halfords Autocentres’ Rory Carlin. “Our garages see significantly more

misfuelling cases during March and September – the peak months for new car purchase – than any other, which is largely made up of new vehicle owners who aren’t yet used to driving a diesel and have consequently made a mistake at the pump.” The cost of wasted fuel and repairs alone ranges from £200 up to £2500 in severe cases, where rectifying the mistake involves replacing fuel filters, diesel pumps and diesel particulate filters. However, this can be the tip of the iceberg once roadside recovery or garage call-out fees (£100-150), refilling the tank (£100), not to mention lost work or leisure time, extra transport costs and the inconvenience involved (approx. £150) are added. “Our advice to any motorist who realises they have put the wrong fuel in their car at the pump is not to attempt to drive off. If you have already driven away before realising your mistake, stop as soon as it is safe to do so because circulating the incorrect fuel can cause further unnecessary engine damage.”

Merc unveils self-driving Actros
Periodic Driver CPC Training from Mercedes-Benz real training, not box ticking.
M
ercedes-Benz has unveiled its vision of the future of road transport – a self-driving Actros which can steer itself along the motorway at speeds of up to 85 kmh and respond to a range of traffic situations without the need for driver intervention. Truckstop News was shown a live demonstration of what Merc has dubbed the ‘Future Truck 2025’, which took place on a closed-off section of Germany’s new A14 motorway just outside of Magdeburg on July 3. During the test, the truck successfully manoeuvred itself out of the way of overtaking emergency vehicles and around a simulated oil spill, while the driver was left to carry out ‘other work‘ – such as completing order notes or booking a parking space at a truck stop – on a tablet computer while his seat was swivelled 45 degrees away from the steering wheel. However, the German manufacturer was keen to stress it still sees the role of the driver as vital, as there are many instances where manual control must be taken to ensure safe passage. At the moment, the technology – which Merc is calling ‘Highway Pilot’ – is only suitable for driving the truck along stretches of motorway; and even then, the driver must be ready to take back control at a moment’s notice should the onboard computer deem it necessary and send out an alert. The system works by the truck’s computer analysing data received from stereo frontmounted cameras and radars positioned around the vehicle, and also from threedimensional maps and signals received
from other vehicles on the road. These work to ensure the truck stays in lane, correctly negotiates bends and maintains a safe 60 m distance from the vehicle in front, and can react to approaching emergency vehicles or lane blockages ahead of time. “The truck of the future is a MercedesBenz that drives itself,” said Merc board of management member, Dr Wolfgang Bernhard. “The Future Truck 2025 is our response to the major challenges and opportunities associated with road freight transport in the future.” But Merc noted that for the system to work, there’s much that needs to be done to upgrade the world’s road and communications infrastructure – which lies in the hands of politicians. However, Merc said it was confident its technology would be ready for market soon if the world’s governments can agree on a unified and cross-compatible communications framework. “If the legislative framework for autonomous driving can be created quickly, the launch of the Highway Pilot is conceivable by the middle of the next decade,” Bernhard said.
Cornish truck stop now open
C
ornwall Services has officially opened in Roche, on the A30 (near Bodmin). The £12.5 million development, employing 200 people, is the first major service station in Cornwall and the only services on the A30 between Exeter and Penzance. It is located at the Victoria Interchange junction on the A30, less than 10 minutes from Bodmin. Phase two of the development will see the addition of a 70-bed hotel with a restaurant and a dedicated Tourist Information Centre on site. Work on phase two will start this year and is due to be completed in 2015. The services include a petrol filling station, a main amenity building with food and drink concessions, some retail outlets including WH Smiths, a cash point, WIFI and 18 dedicated bays for HGVs. There is also a charging point for electric cars, free air, and coach and truck drivers have a dedicated washroom block. Cornwall Services is also signed up to the SNAP scheme for HGV drivers.
“It is fantastic to now see the services complete and to open the doors to our first visitors,” said scheme Development manager, Mark Upton. “We wanted to give anyone passing through on their way to Cornwall a relaxing environment to stop and refresh and benefit from all the services and amenities they would typically expect. But, at the same time, we wanted to welcome them to Cornwall with a little taste of what is to come.” Sitting on a 58,500 m2 site, Cornwall Services has been built with its locality in mind - bringing with it a taste of Cornwall for visitors. Along with all the well-known brands expected at a service station, such as WH Smith, Costa, Subway and McDonald’s, Cornwall Services said it will be championing some of the very best Cornish food and drink with three local food concessions on site Hugo Woolley’s Cornish Delish, the Open Oven Pizza Company and Sausage n Roll.

All set for Shropshire Show
D
ubbed the UK’s ‘friendliest’ truck gathering, the Shropshire Truck Show returns in 2014 to its regular venue of Oswestry Showground after a year’s break – but with a new date: Saturday 6 & Sunday 7 September. Show director Jason Lunn from Independent Event Management said: “Last year’s break from the Oswestry site has allowed them to develop the showground, improving the roadways and toilets – and we are pleased to see a new grandstand in place for the main arena. We’ve had fantastic comments from everyone about our return to the venue and look forward to our new September date, which we hope will give us better weather!” Manufacturers are rebooking their stands at the show with a large display of industry and general trade stands. There will also be a second arena this year dedicated to the recovery display, so that they can perform without having to move around the site. Attractions this year will feature new main arena entertainment, with the first appearance

Truck speed limits set to rise
T
he government has proposed hauliers across England and Wales could see a £11 million-a-year boost in earnings as a result of raising the speed limit for trucks on single-carriageway roads to 50 mph. In addition, the government has also launched a six-week consultation on plans to increase the speed limits for HGVs on dualcarriageways from 50 mph to 60 mph Transport minister Claire Perry announced the move as part of a package of measures the government hopes will cut congestion, reduce dangerous overtaking and “help get the country moving”. Heavy goods vehicles over 7.5 tonnes are currently stuck at 40 mph on single carriageway roads – a speed limit set in the 1960s and at odds with other large vehicles on the country’s roads, Perry said. “We’re are doing all we can to get Britain moving and boost growth,” she said. “This change will do exactly that and save our haulage industry £11 million a year. “Britain has one of the world’s best road safety records, and yet speed limits for lorries have been stuck in the 1960s. This change will remove a 20 mph difference between lorry and car speed limits, cutting dangerous overtaking and bringing permitted lorry speeds into line with other large vehicles like coaches and caravans. “Current speed limits for HGVs were introduced around 50 years ago and need to be updated given improved vehicle technology.” Geoff Dunning from the Road Haulage Association welcomed the move. “This

Government is also looking into raising speed limits for trucks on dual carriageways evidence-based decision by ministers to increase the limit to 50 mph will be strongly welcomed by hauliers and their drivers. The current limit is long out of date and the frustration it generates causes unnecessary road safety risks.” However, road safety charity Brake has condemned the plans. “Put simply, when vehicles travel faster, it takes them longer to stop, increasing risk,” said Brake deputy chief executive, Julie Townsend. “It is very well evidenced that increases in speed equal increases in crashes and casualties. “At the same time, the road safety justification for this move is dubious: we are not aware of evidence it will help tackle risky overtaking, which should be addressed through other means. Pronounced speed
differences between traffic can pose a risk, but the way to address this is by preventing car drivers going too fast, not speeding trucks up.” The change in speed limits for HGVs on single carriageways will come into force in early 2015 and will bring England and Wales in line with other European road safety leaders, such as Denmark and Norway. Depending on the consultation responses, the increase for dual carriageways will come in at the same time. The existing limits continue to apply until the change has been put into effect. The Department for Transport said it is urging English councils to use local powers issued last year to restrict traffic to 30, 40 or 50 mph where necessary because of pedestrian and cyclist use of roads, where the road is located and the layout.

GETTING HITCHED
I would like to ask if you could put a picture of my mum and stepdad’s wedding at Woodlands Water (aka Woodeys) in Ancaster, which took place on July 12? There names are Diane and Brian, and I had the privilege of taking my mum in the lorry I drive for David Harrison Haulage, of Stamford. I’ve been driving lorries since
I was 21 – I’m 26 now, and I’ve been with David Harrison Haulage for four years. The lorry is named after my mother, as she enabled me to become a lorry driver. I’m the only lorry driver in my family – my stepdad a civil engineer. Darryl Lane By email

THANKS TO BIG GEE
Big GEE, the name on the truck windscreen, M5 south passing Bristol. My wife smelled burning, but I couldn’t. It went away – then the gentle vibration in the steering wheel started just as we entered the road works with no hard shoulder. It was a 50 limit, but I slowed the motorhome to 40 and then the nearside front tyre blew. Why, I don’t know, as it only had a couple of thousand miles on it. I called 999 and then walked up the inside of the crash barriers to warn approaching traffic, as we were on a slight bend. About five minutes later, a large truck pulled in 30 yards behind us, and my first thoughts were he had run over the same debris as us and had problem – but he did it to protect us. The driver dismounted and walked up the carriageway waving a fluorescent jacket to warn the motorists, and he stayed with us until the police arrived. So he has our sincere thanks and he was gone before I had a chance to say thank you. Adrian Kerton By email

Scania 112 & 142 at Work Author: Patrick W Dyer Publisher: Old Pond Publishing ISBN: 978-1-908397-87-4 Web: www.oldpond.com Price: £19.95 The latest in author Patrick W Dyer’s At Work series of road transport books paints a detailed picture of two of Scania’s most renowned and respected models: the T112 and T142.
First introduced in 1980, the trucks were constructed using Scania’s then quite new modular build system, which not only meant they covered a large operational weight range from 16 to 174 tons without requiring special types, but also provided the Swedish manufacturer with a large boost in production efficiency. Added to this, for much of its run, the 14-litre 142 was regarded as the most
I’m referring to two emails in your June 2014 edition from Karen Bancroft and Brian Diprose. Karen is right in assuming the Dutch government has extended the Driver CPC deadline. As indeed, I believe, have the Germans and the French. Being cynical, the reason the deadline has not been put back in this country is to me abundantly clear – it’s because the Driver CPC is just another tax, and I know I’m not alone in thinking
powerful production truck in Europe. Dyer’s book offers readers a wealth of details on the background of the trucks’ development, with early chapters focusing on their ancestors and the build-up to the 112 and 142’s initial release in 1980. From there, it continues to outline the design and introduction of the GPR series (so named after the three cab heights on offer), which replaced the previous LB series of forwardcontrol trucks. Offering stunning colour and black-andwhite photography throughout, there’s a lot on offer in this 44-page hardcover book, and classic truck fans – and Scania aficionados in particular – will find it a worthwhile and informative read.
this. God forbid the Powers That Be have to wait for the collection of their ill-gotten gains. With regards to Brian’s email, I agree entirely with every paragraph. Although, I admit, not without faults, after 30 years of driving to the Middle East, I feel extremely insulted that the faceless Mandarins have decided I do not know what I am doing. Now I’m retired (forced to, due to a stroke), I have the time to read all the trade periodicals and have seen the way the industry is going. It seems that everybody is ganging up! Health and Safety, traffic commissioners who are more interested in getting their photograph in the paper, as Brian mentioned the cyclist lunatic fringe, and numerous new regulations appearing by the minute. Not withstanding the Poles obtaining their CPCs by post! I am now retired, unfortunately due to a stroke – and even if that had not happened, I, like Brian, would not have submitted to another back-door tax. Incidentally, to those who may be interested, a stroke is a wonderful way to lose weight. Chris Hooper, by email

We have ladies shower and toilet, all newly built with working locks, so you can feel safe when showering. We are open 24 hours a day, and we also have a cafe on
After reading lately about all this nonsense regarding cyclists, I feel it’s time for drivers to put an end to this madness once and for all. I’m sure every one of your readers will have had an encounter with a cyclist, as I myself have had on many occasions. The worst case was when I nearly ran a cyclist over on the A85, just north of Lochearnhead. Any driver who knows the road will know how bad the corners are. With a full load of fish feed and only doing about 25 mph, I nearly hit him as, when I rounded the corner, he was there, legs going like the clappers but getting nowhere. With approaching traffic heading south, I had no where to go. Thankfully I stopped before I hit him. I am not against cyclists, but I don’t feel they should be sharing our roads. The deaths of cyclists causes devastation for the families and friends of those killed – and the motorists who killed them. I put an e-petition online to ban cyclists from British roads unless on proper designated cycle lanes – though I don’t mean those stupid painted lanes that eat into our lanes! If any readers would like to sign the petition, they can get to it through the following link: http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/ petitions/52449 David W Gunn By email

Held at the Oulton Park race circuit in Cheshire, the event gave invited guests their first chance to put the vehicle through its paces on UK roads. New Actros is the ultimate premium truck for longdistance transport. From the outset, designers and ADVERTORIAL engineers were determined to provide the best possible comfort, driving dynamics, safety, productivity and operating economy, as well as a sweeping range of cab sizes, engine ratings and options, allowing customers to tailor vehicles perfectly for any application. The current Actros holds the Guinness World Record for fuel economy at 40 tonnes gvw, but road tests have shown the new model is seven per cent more frugal when specified to meet Euro 5 emissions regulations, while the ultra-clean Euro 6 version shows a four per cent improvement. The 81 guests took turns to head out on a 17-mile test drive, carefully chosen to simulate a variety of typical driving conditions. ACCIDENT
In this article I highlight a not uncommon situation where a driver opens the doors of a lorry or trailer and part of the contents fall out on top of them. As with previous articles, the common factor is the often significant effect on the injured person’s life (physically, emotionally and financially) and although using the existing legal process to make personal injury claims as a means of redress cannot truly compensate for the trauma and inconvenience suffered, it can help not only by providing financial relief by awards of compensation, but also requiring the guilty party to provide the required medical and rehabilitation treatment.

using mobile phones while driving
Parliament has recognised the inherent dangers caused by drivers of motor vehicles when using mobile telephones while driving and brought forward specific legislation. There has been an unacceptable increase in the number of vocational licence holders using mobile telephones without a hands free device while driving large goods and passenger carrying vehicles. This practice is unacceptable and presents an undue risk to road safety. Studies have indicated that even the use of hands-free devices can distract a driver to the extent that they may be prevented from applying the requisite care and attention. A report for an offence received from an enforcement agency that a vocational driver has used their mobile telephone while driving without a hands free device in the last three years will result in that driver being called to a hearing before the traffic commissioner. Each case will be decided on its own facts and merits and the presiding traffic commissioner will be keen to ascertain the reason the driver is engaged in the telephone call. In cases where drivers are speaking with their employers or their customers, the traffic commissioner may consider the effect this might have upon the operator’s repute”. So you are likely to be called to a hearing in order to show cause why an order should not be made. The guidelines which a traffic commissioner will be considering are to suspend vocational entitlement for 14 days, 21 days if driving a commercial vehicle, to commence with immediate effect. For a second and/or subsequent offence to multiply accordingly, for example, second offence in a commercial vehicle 2 x 21 days.

I have noticed an increasing number of queries relating to vehicle load security, dangerous loads and overloading of vehicles. This month, the number of queries relating to overloading has been the greatest – so it seems like a good time to have a closer look at this issue in cases 28 - Hinchcliffs Solictors - Truckstop News - Autumn 2014 - Half Page .indd 1 where there is a prosecution. The need to ensure vehicles are used within their legal weight limits is established by the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986. The failure to comply with the regulations in relation to goods vehicles and passenger vehicles is an offence under the Road Traffic Act 1988. The Road Traffic Act 1988 states at Part II CONSTRUCTION AND USE OF VEHICLES AND EQUIPMENT, General regulation of construction, use etc. Under Breach of requirement as to weight: goods and passenger vehicles. That a person who—
(a) contravenes or fails to comply with a construction and use requirement as to any description of weight applicable to— (i) a goods vehicle, or (ii) a motor vehicle or trailer adapted to carry more than eight passengers, or (b) uses on a road a vehicle which does not comply with such a requirement, or causes or permits a vehicle to be so used, is guilty of an offence. It can be seen that this creates three separate offences of using, causing or permitting. Most enforcement
One of the offences some drivers have committed is using a mobile phone while driving. The legislation defines this offence as follows: No person is to drive a motor vehicle on a road if he is using a hand-held mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind. No person is to cause or permit any other person to drive a motor vehicle on a road while that other person is using a handheld mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind. No person is to supervise a holder of a provisional licence if the person supervising is using a hand-held mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind at a time when the provisional licence holder is driving a motor vehicle on a road.
following: sending or receiving oral or written messages; sending or receiving facsimile documents; sending or receiving still or moving images; and providing access to the internet. If you’re caught using a hand-held mobile phone or similar device while driving, you can expect to get an automatic fixed penalty notice. This means you’ll get three penalty points on your driving licence and have to pay a fine of £60. However, your case may go to court. If it does, you may also face disqualification from driving on top of a maximum fine of £1000. If you were driving a PCV or heavy goods vehicle, you could face a maximum fine of £2500. Also if the matter were considered of a serious nature you could face prosecution for other road transport related offences, which carry more serious sentences.
So these are statutory defences to the offence action centres on the ‘user’ offence. This offence is a of overloading and is the reason why enforcement strict liability offence. Volvo wants your Future Truck entries
T
o celebrate the historic landmark of the 200,000th Volvo truck to be registered in the UK since the company began trading here in 1967, Volvo Trucks has announced a design competition to attract the truck designers and engineers of the future of road transport. Volvo said its competition, called Volvo Trucks: Truck of the Future 2050, offers the opportunity for anyone, whatever their age or background, to have some fun trying to predict what the truck of 36 years hence will look like – and how truck design may have to respond to the infrastructure of the future. Anyone can enter and send in creative designs they think will address the question of how trucks could be used in society in the year 2050. The individual winners will go on a once-ina-lifetime visit to meet the Volvo Trucks design team in Gothenburg, where they will see their entries displayed in the Design Studio. “The winning designs will demonstrate creative thinking that will help the Volvo truck
driver and operator more than three decades from now, work productively, economically and safely with all other road users,” said Volvo Trucks managing director, Arne Knaben. “We are very, very keen to encourage children, young adults and students to take part in what will be a fun competition.” Entrants are invited to submit their designs via special website at www.volvotrucks.co.uk/ design There are three age-related entry classes: a) Up to 11 years old, b) 11 to 18 years and c) over 18 – but Volvo said there will be only one winner per category. In addition to design visuals, each entry must also include a brief explanation of the thinking behind its features. The designs must be for a long-haul or regional distribution truck, configured for the UK road transport industry, as they see it might be, in thirty-six years’ time. All entries must include sketches of the cab interior as well as the vehicle’s exterior. Closing date for entries is Friday, October 3, 2014.
Trial rise for A9 speed limit
S
cottish Parliament has said it will allow trucks over 75 tonnes to travel up to 50 mph (10 mph more than the standard UK A-road limit) on the A9 road between Inverness and Perth as part of a three-year trial. “There can be journey time savings, and savings can be produced for companies and, ultimately, customers by bearing down on

transportation costs,” said Scottish transport minister, Keith Brown. “There can also be more certainty about planning and how long it will take to use the road.” The news has been met with approval from the industry, with the Road Haulage Association stating it was ‘delighted’ the plans received government approval.
Highlands and Islands MSP and road safety campaigner, David Stewart, said he was also in favour of tests for the new speed limit: “A local HGV driver approached me in December 2012 and asked me to do all I could to help the local hauliers get the speed limit for HGVs on the A9 increased from 40 mph to 50 mph,” Steward told the Strathspey and Badenoch Herald. “I was only too happy to come on board, as I am aware a lot of road collisions on the route are caused by frustration.
“When you have one set of vehicles able to travel at 60 mph and others at 40 mph, you are going to get long tailbacks, queues and then frustration kicks in. “It is my hope that if HGVs can travel at 50 mph and other vehicles at 60 mph, then there will hopefully be less frustration caused as most drivers will happily travel at a constant appropriate speed,” he concluded. If the trial of the new speed limits proves a success, government said it will consider upping the speed limit in 2018.

ruton, Somerset-based livestock haulier AE George Haulage Ltd has become one of the first UK operators to put a new 44-tonne GTW Volvo FH 8x2 tridem drawbar into service. The company, which operates a fleet of 20 trucks on livestock haulage, was founded 84 years ago in 1930 – and the firm’s Russell Woof said that with some older farms having limited yard access for heavy trucks, good manoeuvrability is essential for its fleet. AE George’s new tridem was supplied by Truck and Bus Wales and West, Gurney Slade and is on a seven-year Gold R&M contract with Uptime Assurance. Woof said that with the need to ensure the welfare of the transported animals, reducing unscheduled vehicle downtime is crucial. Volvo’s 100 per cent Uptime Assurance therefore provided peace of mind as, through online communication, Volvo technicians can monitor the condition of the trucks’ vital components before a planned maintenance appointment. “Volvo is the only manufacturer to offer a tridem-configuration 8x2 with this combination of lifting and steering axles number two and four,” Woof said. “It means the turning circle of this new FH 8x2 tridem is actually better than that of a standard 26-tonne GVW six-wheeler.” He added that rearsteer, in particular, is invaluable when negotiating narrow winding roads and manoeuvring between buildings
Bruton’s AE George spec’d Volvo tridem for tricky rural deliveries and machinery in busy farmyards. Spec of the FH tridem includes a 13-litre Euro 6 engine rated at 500 bhp, Globetrotter cab with leather upholstery and extra locker storage. Woof said the tridem is proving effortless to drive. “The driver is away three or four nights a week as we deliver to most of the UK, from Cornwall to Cumbria. The quality of the driving experience in the FH definitely contributes to reducing driver fatigue.” AE George Haulage operates the FH tridem both as a drawbar and with just the prime mover, depending on the number of animals to be transported. With an adult pig weighing an average 120 kg, a typical load of 125 pigs is equivalent to a 15,000 kg payload on the three decks of the Pezzaioli bodywork. When in use, the trailer can also carry an additional 100 pigs.

he European Union’s Transport Council has given its support to plans seeking to amend the rules governing truck weights and dimensions, in a move which has been welcomed by the European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (ACEA). ACEA said the revision of the Directive on the weights and dimensions of commercial vehicles will provide “a unique opportunity” to reduce CO2 emissions more efficiently from heavy-duty vehicles. “Industry should have the flexibility to make use of revised rules to deliver even cleaner and more efficient trucks in the most cost-effective manner,” said ACEA secretary general, Erik Jonnaert. “Allowing an extension of the current maximum length of vehicles and vehicle combinations, while complying with legal requirements, will enable the industry to incorporate both existing and future fuelefficiency innovations into their designs,” he added. The road transport industry has long advocated revising weights and dimensions rules to further increase truck efficiency.
This includes using the most cost-effective solutions – such as permitting the wider use of the European Modular System (EMS), which EMS improves fuel efficiency without negative safety impacts or increased road wear, and can be implemented quickly and at low cost. However, ACEA said the implementation of the new rules must take into account the time it will take truck manufacturers to implement the new designs into a new generation of commercial vehicles – with the typical product life cycle for a new truck being 10-15 years. This, said ACEA, means manufacturers need to know about a new regulatory framework several years before its implementation. “The industry is committed to continuing to improve truck safety,” Jonnaert said. “Safety technologies that prevent accidents happening in the first place are the best way forward.” ACEA said the use of new technologies such as cameras and proximity detectors to improve forward, side and rear visibility will provide a quicker, more flexible and more efficient way to improve the safety of pedestrians and cyclists than re-designed cabs.

POLL LABELS SNACKING DRIVERS AS ‘DANGEROUS’

ating or drinking while driving is nearly as dangerous as using a mobile device – whether handheld or handsfree – and greatly increases a driver’s risk of being in or causing a collision, according to new data released by driver safety firm Lytx Europe Ltd. Lytx found drivers who eat and drink while driving are 3.6 times more likely to be involved in a collision than those who do not, due to the distraction it causes. This is almost as high as the collisions resulting from use of a mobile device while driving – where Lytx’s data showed drivers using a hands-free device are 4.6 times more likely to be involved in a collision, and those using a smartphone or tablet are 4.7 times more likely to be involved in a collision compared to drivers who did not. “I see people eating while driving almost every day,” said Del Lisk, vice president of
safety services for Lytx. “We know distracted driving is a significant factor in vehicle collisions, and our predictive analytics show distractions such as eating and drinking or use of smartphones and tablets are among the leading causes of collisions. “Everyone should consider that the next time they think about eating behind the wheel. Getting into a collision and potentially causing serious injury simply isn’t worth it.” Lytx UK general manager Paul Jones added: “Approximately 1750 people were killed and 200,000 people were injured on UK roads in 2012, according to the most recent DfT figures. The fact is the majority of these incidents are due to human error and are avoidable. “We’re dedicated to using our technology to help professional drivers adopt safer driving habits and measurably reduce the risk that is happening on our roads every day.”

orthwest England-based KC Autos has announced it will be replacing 10 of its existing delivery and collection fleet with new Isuzu trucks after running a number of Isuzu twin-deck car transporters in its fleet for the past few years. Ten brand-new Forward N75.190 7.5-tonne chassis/cabs, each fitted with a Dyson TR3 TDLW twin-deck transporter body, have now gone into service working out of five repair facilities covering Cheshire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, North Wales, Staffordshire and the West Midlands.
Commenting on the decision to exclusively specify Isuzu, David Cotterill, KC Autos’ owner, said: “Based on our previous experience of the Isuzu marque, we have found them to be totally reliable and they give us excellent levels of service throughout their working life. The vehicles support our continued strategic growth plans to become the premier vehicle repair group within the region.” The vehicles represent an investment of around £400,000, and all 10 vehicles will each cover in the region of 800 miles a week.

GOV PRAISES LONGER TRAILER SUCCESS
he government has published its second annual report on the trial of longer semi-trailers, as it presses ahead with tests of the new equipment which it hopes will reduce traffic and cut carbon emissions.
The longer semi-trailer trial was launched in 2012 and allows companies to apply for a share of 1800 allocations to operate longer vehicles until the trial ends in 2022. The vehicles enable more goods to be transported at once, allowing operators to
reduce the number of trucks on the road. The new report showed that between 600,000 and 900,000 vehicle kilometres have been saved by use of the longer semi-trailers in the trial so far, which has therefore resulted in reduced emissions of carbon and other pollutants. The report also proved longer semitrailers are operating safely, with a lower rate of injury incidents than standard commercial vehicles. While these are preliminary results, the the government said they give reassurance that longer trailers are at least as safe as other trucks. “Longer semi-trailers enable freight companies to transport more goods more efficiently, so could have significant

economic and environmental benefits,” said transport minister, Stephen Hammond. “It is great news these longer lorries are now delivering real results in fewer journeys, and it is encouraging they have been involved in fewer incidents than standard lorries.” Hammond said longer semi-trailers can provide significant economic and environmental benefits to the UK. It is hoped the operational trial will enable the industry to show the benefits these trailers can bring to the country. The trial is expected to save over 3000 tonnes of CO2 over 10 years, with the overall benefits estimated at £33 million over 10 years.

Volvo Trucks has lifted the lid on its all-new FH series of heavy trucks, designed with the driver in mind and a focus on fuel economy.
→ M1 South
Details were scarce when we went to press ahead of the official launch on September 5, but the Swedish manufacturer told Truckstop News the new FHs will be available in both Euro 5 and 6 form, and pack a vast amount of upgrades and improvements. Leading the charge for fuel efficiency is Volvoʼs new I-See function (Truckstop News, issue 301). The system, which works alongside the I-Shift automated transmission, is claimed to cut consumption by five per cent by storing information about the route the truck drives along. “The next time the truck uses the same route, I-See operates the accelerator, gears and brakes to ensure progress is as economical as possible,” said Claes Nilsson, president, Volvo Truck Corporation. An additional five per cent saving in fuel use is possible with Volvo Trucksʼ new Fuel Package. This package encompasses training and monthly assistance – Fuel Advice – and its aim is to cut fuel costs by changing driving styles and increasing knowledge of how to drive for maximum fuel-efficiency. Volvoʼs new I-Torque Euro 6 driveline – production of which for the European market will get under way in autumn 2013 – should make for additional fuel savings. “ITorque reduces fuel consumption by up to With its new Volvo FH series, Volvo is ʻpushing four the envelopeʼ in re-defining what a premium per cent. Together with I-See and other minor truck can offer. improvements, the result is fuel consumption can drop by up to 10 per cent. For the average truck, this can equate to a saving of up to 4100 litres of fuel a year,” Nilsson continued. On-road manners have received much attention, and Volvo is claiming the new trucks offer exceptional handling thatʼs much like a car. “To put things into perspective, we can even offer independent front suspension, although initially only on left-hand drive vehicles. This world-first takes handling to unsurpassed levels in the truck world,” Nilsson said.

We Urgently require Professional Class 1 (C+E) Drivers
Also of benefit to drivers are improved seats and driving position, optimised to provide a better view of the road. This is aided by an increase in the cabʼs usable window area and an innovative slimmer rear-view mirror design. Stalks and controls are arranged in priority so the most important ones are now closest to the driver, and the steering wheel now has a neck tilt function – another world-first in the truck world. Safety is high on the agenda, An all-new cab structure features more upright A-pillars, which give the cab an additional 1 m3 of interior space. This means an extra 300 litres (10.5 cu ft) of storage capacity, as well as greater comfort on board.“The cab is optimised both for work and leisure time,” Nilsson said. “A better bed, integrated parking cooler, new lighting and low noise levels among other features, all increase the chance of pleasant relaxation and a good nightʼs sleep, which in turn means drivers are less tired and more alert.” Production of the Volvo FH will start in spring 2013 for the European market.

TRUCKPOL STRIKES AT FREIGHT CRIME GANG
C
ommercial vehicle crime fighting partnership Truckpol has reported it has received significant interest from both the police and the wider industry in support of the initiative since its relaunch in March. As a result, the service said the National Business Crime Solution (NBCS) is now engaging with over 40 police forces and 150 officers from across the UK to help provide up-to-date freight crime data – and its work has already led to some successful arrests. Truckpol told Truckstop News it was recently contacted by the police following information relating to two incidents that involved the theft of goods from vehicles while in transit. The officers working on the incident were keen to explore whether this formed part of a wider series of crimes, or whether Truckpol was aware of any similar incidents. To find out, TruckPol circulated the details in an alert distributed to the police network and were subsequently contacted by officers who informed them of a method of operation (MO) prevalent in Eastern Europe, whereby offenders illegally obtain goods while the vehicle is moving. Truckpol subsequently alerted businesses to this MO and the possible link
to comparable incidents and asked them to send in any details of similar unexplained losses that may form a part of this series of crimes. Truckpol collated all of the incident details and, thanks to close engagement with the Central Motorway Policing Group, provided detailed information on the recorded movements of the convoy of suspected vehicles. The information gathered by the NBCS led to an organised police operation in which one of the suspected vehicles was stopped, and as a result 11 suspects were arrested – all originating from Eastern Europe. All of the suspects were remanded in custody on a conspiracy charge and are currently waiting to be sentenced. John Traynor, director of security, TNT said: “I was particularly impressed at the speed which TruckPol was able to collate and disseminate information between the industry and the police. This ensured these offences were stopped before this emerging trend became a significant crime series. “The ability of TruckPol to co-ordinate the information led to a timely police operation and the successful arrest of those involved. This is clear evidence of the value of sharing data across the industry and bodes well for the future of TruckPol.”
SAT NAV SNAFU LEADS TO STUCK TRUCK Truck got stuck in narrow country roads after following unsuitable route on sat nav
A
truck driver who was blindly following directions provided by a sat nav device has managed to get his vehicle stuck in a narrow country lane, according to a report from Hertfordshire Police. Officers were called to the scene in the village of Watton-at-Stone, near Stevenage, on July 4 after the articulated truck became wedged across a small rural junction between two tall hedgerows. The police said the truck ran aground when its low-riding trailer became stuck on a grass mound situated in the middle of the

joining roads, which occurred as the driver was attempting to manoeuvre the vehicle through the tight lanes. No details were released concerning the destination of the truck, though the police reported they had to close a section of road around Church Lane and Perrywood Lane for a period of two hours to enable a specialist recovery team to free the stranded lorry. An officer from Hertfordshire Police tweeted pictures from the scene, along with the warning: “Sat navs are amazing pieces of equipment – don’t always trust them!”

We are looking to recruit LGV C+E Drivers (LGV1) and Customer Delivery Drivers across a number of our John Lewis and Waitrose branches and distribution centres.
LGV C+E Driver (LGV1)
Competitive salary + benefits | Various locations Whether you’re completing branch deliveries or supplier collections, you’ll be a visible face of the business. So, as well as being confident with all the health and safety elements of the job, you’ll need to be good with people too. As comfortable driving a standard tractor unit as you are a 44-ton double deck trailer, a rigid vehicle or a command steer trailer, you’ll have LGV experience, a C+E driving licence, a full DCPC with drivers qualification card and a valid digital tachograph card. We’re looking for people with impeccable accident records; bring us all this, and a calm personable attitude, and you could be perfect for the role.
Customer Delivery Driver
Competitive salary + benefits | Various locations From loading the delivery vehicles to delivering to our customers’ homes, you’ll take responsibility for both the goods you’re carrying and the reputation of our business. Customer service is our number one priority here, so going the extra mile to make sure that every customer is happy is going to be a key part of your job description. Add to that a good knowledge of relevant driving regulations and experience in a similar role and you could be exactly who we’re looking for. For the John Lewis Customer Delivery Driver roles there are training programmes which will provide you with the potential to broaden your skill set and build the tools to perform a range of installation services on the job. For John Lewis you will need a C1 driver licence, drivers qualification card and a valid digital tachograph. This is driving with a difference. To find out more about where the roles are based, the hours available and to apply, please visit www.jlpjobs.com Please sign up for Job Alerts on the website to be notified of future vacancies across all of our Waitrose and John Lewis distribution centres and branches. Closing date: Wednesday 10th September 2014. The John Lewis Partnership operates without discrimination and embraces diversity; this is reflected in all that we do.
The Partnership starts here
