ntries are flooding in for the Truckstop News Truck Stop of the Year competition – and if you haven’t yet voted for your favourite establishment, now’s the time to do it! Our mission is to find out what you, our readers think should be crowned the UK’s best truck stop that offers everything a truck driver needs to stay clean, fed, watered and well rested while on the job. What we’re looking for is a truck stop that sets itself apart from the rest by offering a high-quality service to drivers every time. We’re talking safe, secure parking; clean toilets, shower and wash facilities; top-notch and reasonably priced food; and other basics such as a snack shop, driver’s bar, TV, wifi etc. Good value is the name of the game, and

we want to know the best place to find it. The winner of last year’s competition was Junction 29 Truckstop near the M1 in Chesterfield, which won over readers and our top-secret judges with its first-class facilities. Our judges said: “We found Junction 29 offered fully enclosed parking with high fencing and CCTV. It offers a full range of facilities including fuel and a truck wash, wifi and a well-stocked shop area. The cafeteria was very clean and offered a great variety of food, including some healthy options. The toilets and showers were absolutely spotless.” The closing date for this year’s competition is edging closer, so get your votes in now using the form on the right and let us know which establishment you think deserves to be crowned the next Truckstop News Truck Stop of the Year!

The Premiums replace 2008-plate DAFs and Scanias, taking the number of Renault trucks on the 40-strong FreightForce fleet to 14. The deal was secured following a structured procurement process that focused on whole-life costs, with the Renault Premium reportedly heading the field… for fuel economy, reliability and cost. The 10 new Premiums join FreightForce’s general haulage fleet delivering flexible transportation throughout the UK and Europe.

“The Premiums will replace DAFs and Scanias purchased at the front end of the recession when we took advantage of competitive packages offered by the truck manufacturers,” said FreightForce MD, Edward Miles. “Today our decision is based on whole-life costs, and our structured procurement process set out to identify the best end-to-end deal for our business.” According to Miles, the Renault Premium came out top based on the firm’s key criteria of fuel economy, reliability and whole life cost. Wrapped in FreightForce’s blue and green livery, the new Premiums will be on a full repair and maintenance contract through Norfolk Truck and Van.

he first of DAF’s new LF Construction chassis to come off the production line has been handed over to truck rental company Leeds Commercial at an event at the Leyland Trucks assembly plant in January. The ceremony saw DAF Trucks president Harrie Schippers hand over the keys to Leeds Commercial MD, Chris Miller. Leeds Commercial, which trades as LC Vehicle Hire, is a family-run firm that has been involved in truck rental for more than 50 years and which currently operates in excess of 2000 vehicles. The 18-tonne Euro 6 truck is one of 10 of the new LF Construction models ordered by the Yorkshire company along with 10 CF Construction trucks. “I’m delighted to be at Leyland Trucks to receive the keys of the first of the new DAF LF Construction model to come off the line,” said Chris Miller at the event. “We chose this model, along with the CF Construction, because it has been specifically designed to meet the demanding requirements of the construction industry, which is one of the four market sectors we serve. “We’re looking forward to these trucks delivering the reliability, durability, fuel efficiency and environmental benefits our customers expect.” The 18-tonne LF Construction is specifically designed for application within the building industry. The vehicle shares a family resemblance with the larger CF Construction, thanks to the specific black grille with larger

The LF Construction features distinctive steps and a 3 mm thick plate under the bumper to protect the radiator. The LF Construction is available with the 6.7-litre PACCAR PX-7 engine with ratings of between 164 kW (220 bhp) and 231 kW (310 bhp). DAF said it has the smallest turning

talian truck manufacturer Iveco is celebrating after securing second place in Dakar 2014, after Dutch driver Gerard De Rooy, behind the wheel of a Powerstar, was pipped to the post by Kamaz-driving Audrey Karginov. After yielding ground during the 11th stage, De Rooy was unable to catch up with his rival, just missing out on the opportunity to relive the success achieved in the 2012 Dakar. The other members of Team Petronas De Rooy Iveco also finished well: Dutchman Hans Stacey, driving an Iveco Trakker Evolution 3, took seventh place in the standings, while Spaniard Pep Vila and Frenchman Jo Adua took 10th and 22nd place respectively, both behind the wheel of an Iveco Trakker Evolution 2. Speaking immediately after he finished the last stage of Dakar 2014, De Rooy said: “It was a tough test. It was not a good idea to have the trucks and cars start together. That was also the case last year and we told A.S.O. (Amaury Sport Organisation). Eventually I did everything that was in my power. I had hoped that would be enough. We can at least be very satisfied with the team, our Iveco trucks and our performance.”

All the Iveco vehicles which started at the beginning of January from Rosario crossed the finish line at Valparaíso. Specially adapted to suit the extreme terrain and climate of the Dakar, the trucks were based on factory-produced models which were optimised for high energy-efficient performance. The vehicles were equipped with Cursor 13 engines, each with a displacement of 13 litres and capable of producing 900 bhp and a peak torque of 1100 Nm at 3800 rpm. The engines use the same technology as the newly introduced Euro 6 engines for Iveco’s heavy range vehicles. The Dakar is the most important off-road rally in the world and captures the attention of millions of fans every year. It started on January 5 from Rosario in Argentina, and finished on January 18 at Valparaíso in Chile. This year’s event was the longest Dakar since the competition arrived in South America. The route covered more than 9000 km in total, 5000 of which were special trials. There were a total of 13 stages to reach the Chilean port of Valparaíso, having crossed the highest mountain of the Andes in Bolivia.

uropean palletised freight network Pall-Ex has received some royal thanks after donating £20,000 to Carers Trust. The money was raised through the company’s ‘Penny-a-Pallet’ scheme, which was devised by Pall-Ex CEO and television entrepreneur Hilary Devey. The initiative has been running since 1996 and involves one penny being donated to the charity for every pallet delivered through the Pall-Ex network. The cheque was personally delivered to the president of Carers Trust, HRH The Princess Royal by Pall-Ex marketing director, Jean-Paul Benizri. Jean-Paul was representing Hilary at the Carers Trust Fundraising evening at Claridges Hotel in London. The evening raised a total of £145,000 and saw 200 guests enjoy an exquisite three-course dinner prepared by awardwinning executive chef, Martyn Neil, entertainment from Michael Ball and a charity auction hosted by Lord Jeffery Archer. “Carers Trust carries out vital work across the UK and it is a privilege to be in a position where we can donate such a large amount of money,” said Devey, who is also vice-president of Carers Trust. “The ‘Penny-a-Pallet’ scheme works extremely well as it grows in line with the business, allowing us to increase our donation year on year. Since launching the initiative, we have raised over £150,000 for Carers Trust. This is a testament to the growth of the Pall-Ex network and the ever-increasing number of pallets successfully delivered across the UK and mainland Europe.”

Haulaway hails debut Arocs E

ast Sussex-based operator Haulaway has invested in one of the UK’s first MercedesBenz Arocs eight-wheelers. Supplied by local dealer Rossetts Commercials, the Arocs 3245 is fitted with a PowerShift 3 automated gearbox and is powered by a six-cylinder, 12.8-litre Euro 6 engine rated at 330 kW (450 bhp). It has also been spec’d with a ClassicSpace M day cab and Hyva hook-loading gear and ‘easy sheet’ system. Haulaway provides waste management services to trade and domestic customers. It operates a materials recycling facility at its headquarters in Hailsham, where it also crushes and screens aggregates to produce sub-base for resale, and supplies wheelie bins, skips and roll-on/roll-off bins with capacities of up to 50 cubic yards.

The family-owned company’s all-Mercedes-Benz fleet of 15 trucks includes skip-loaders from 12.5-18 tonnes gvw, 32-tonne grabs and tippers as well as hook-loaders, and 26-tonne Econic refuse vehicles. “Our business is all about sustainability,” said firm MD, Colin Holloway. “We achieve high recycling rates through our various operations and vehicle systems, thus minimising the environmental impact and costs to our customers of sending waste to landfill. “With its Euro 6 engine the Arocs offers reduced emissions, while it is also noticeably quieter than our other eight-wheelers. So this new vehicle can only reinforce the image of our company as an environmentally sensitive operator.” The Arocs is now working alongside a similarly-equipped 8x4 Actros. “That truck has performed brilliantly and will be a tough act

The new Mercedes-Benz Actros premium long-haul tractor unit range was the star attraction for some of the North-West’s leading road transport operators, at a launch event staged by leading dealer Enza.

Held at the Oulton Park race circuit in Cheshire, the event gave invited guests their first chance to put the vehicle through its paces on UK roads. New Actros is the ultimate premium truck for longdistance transport. From the outset, designers and engineers were determined to provide the best possible comfort, driving dynamics, safety, productivity and operating economy, as well as a sweeping range of cab sizes, engine ratings and options, allowing customers to tailor vehicles perfectly for any application. The current Actros holds the Guinness World Record for fuel economy at 40 tonnes gvw, but road tests have shown the new model is seven per cent more frugal when specified to meet Euro 5 emissions regulations, while the ultra-clean Euro 6 version shows a four per cent improvement. The 81 guests took turns to head out on a 17-mile test drive, carefully chosen to simulate a variety of typical driving conditions. The route included single- and dualMark May reckons the new Mercedes-Benz Actros is ʻbrilliantʼ. carriageway roads. Each of the four demonstrator trucks provided for the event made 10 journeys - a total of almost 700 miles covered on the day. On each trip, the mpg figure achieved was recorded and at the end of the day the winner was Craig Stewart, logistics manager at Widnes-based Ray Stewart Haulage, who averaged an impressive 11.4 mpg in the 510 bhp V8-powered Actros 2551, and 11.8 mpg in the 450 bhp Actros 2545 model. Between journeys, guests also enjoyed ‘hot laps’ of the Oulton Park circuit in two-seater racing cars piloted by professional drivers. PERSONAL INJURY SPECIALISTS Transport manager Mark May of food waste and animal by-products recycling specialist John Pointon & Sons, summed up the feelings of many when he said: “It was a great day, very informative and enjoyable, and superbly organised. The new Actros is brilliant. The driving experience was fantastic and if the fuel performance figures are to be believed it will be an unbeatable all-round package. The previous Actros is a very good truck - but this new one is a huge step forward.”

Suffering physical & financial pain?

Haulaway’s new Arocs 3245 tipper is one of the first to be put to work in the UK to follow,” Holloway said. “But I’m confident the Arocs will live up to expectations. “It is clearly built for the job and has fantastic ground clearance, while cab comfort is also much improved and early mpg returns of 7.5 mpg when fully freighted are very encouraging.” Mercedes’ Arocs range of tractors and four-, six- and eight-

wheeled rigids is available in a wide range of variants and with gross weights from 18 to 250 tonnes. Haulaway’s Arocs is the subject of a Mercedes-Benz Repair and Maintenance Contract under which it will cover 60,000 km per year, with servicing and inspections undertaken at Rossetts Commercials’ Eastbourne workshop.

Anti-skid tech stretches to semis olvo Trucks has announced it will begin fitting its innovative Stretch Brake anti-jack-knifing technology to FH and FM tractor unit and semi-trailer combinations in 2014, following the system’s successful implementation on drawbar outfits over the last two years. For trucks with trailers, slippery winter roads and downhill gradients represent a tough challenge for drivers due to the risk of the vehicle becoming unstable and, in the worstcase scenario, starting to jack-knife. In these situations, Volvo’s Stretch Brake has been designed to automatically retard the trailer and straighten up the truck if things begin to go awry on slippery down gradients. The system complements the truck’s electronic stability program (ESP). While ESP is at its most effective at higher speeds, Volvo said Stretch Brake is only operational at speeds below 40 kmh. “One might call Stretch Brake a kind of low-speed ESP,” said Mats Sabelström, brake specialist for Volvo Trucks. “As the

extile rental provider CLEAN Linen Services said it is hoping to make big savings on fuel while also cutting its carbon footprint after setting its first FUSO Canter Eco Hybrid on the road. Supplied by Rygor, Reading, the vehicle is assigned to collection and delivery work in London, where CLEAN said it is achieving fuel returns of 26-31 mpg. The Maidenhead, Berkshire-based firm has now ordered a second identical vehicle from Mercedes-Benz Rygor (Merc’s dealer network is responsible for Canter sales and support in the UK). “We strive to be as environmentally efficient as possible, and the Canter Eco Hybrid compliments the efforts being made in our plants to minimise our carbon footprint,” said CLEAN financial director, Martin Oxley. “But we operate in a very competitive environment, so have to be conscious of our costs as well. The fact that the vehicle also adds up from a business point of view is crucial.” The factory-built 7.5-tonne Canter Eco Hybrid features an 110 kW (150 bhp) diesel engine which works in parallel with a slimline 40 kW (54 bhp) electric motor, which is positioned between the clutch and DUONIC automatic transmission. Having set off using electric power alone, the vehicle switches to a combination of diesel and electric operation once a speed of around 6 mph (10 kmh) has been reached. Depending on the power demand, the electric motor also supports the diesel at higher speeds. Switches between modes are seamless and require no input from the driver. CLEAN’s first Eco Hybrid is the subject of a CharterWay contract hire agreement with Mercedes-Benz Financial Services, under

veco dealer Hendy Van & Truck has delivered the first concrete mixer to be built on the Italian manufacturer’s rugged new Trakker Hi-Land 8x4 chassis in the UK. Launched at last year’s CV Show, the Trakker Hi-Land AT340T41B becomes the second Iveco to join Southampton-based Johnston Services’ five-strong fleet of mixers. It will be used to deliver loads of concrete and mortar to construction sites as far as Oxford in the North, Weymouth in the West and Brighton in the East. “We have already got a previous-generation Trakker on the fleet which has been excellent on fuel and the drivers love it,” said company director, Iain Johnston. “It was also our first multi-wheeler with an automated transmission, and since then we haven’t looked back.” The company has specified its latest 32-tonner with an EEV-rated 12.88-litre FPT Industrial Cursor 13 engine, capable of producing up to 410 bhp between 1380 and 1900 rpm, plus 2100 Nm of torque between 900 and 1380 rpm. The engine features a fixed-geometry turbo and a waste-gate valve, and guarantees the torque necessary to cope with the most challenging terrain when making deliveries offroad. “Everything about this new generation vehicle is exactly right; the chassis, driveline and cab are perfectly set-up for our type of work,” Johnston added. The new Trakker Hi-Land will be in operation five and a half days per week, including night work, and is expected to clock up to 50,000 km per annum. It will remain on fleet with Johnston Services for at least six years, with all servicing undertaken by Hendy Van & Truck. The Trakker Hi-Land features a revised day cab design which offers similar levels of comfort found in the road-going Stralis Hi-Street, but packaged to suit the needs of operators with a requirement to run both on and off the road. Completing the specification is a EuroTronic automated transmission, which is fitted as standard in all new Trakker models. Built for Iveco by ZF, it features a gear selector built into the steering column stalk for ergonomic operation.

ACCIDENT

W

ith so much negative media coverage being circulated by the insurance industry, the press and even the Government, it is little wonder that many people are put off from making an accident compensation claim. Innocent injured people are made to feel as if they are in some way fraudulent by making a claim, when it is they who have been made to suffer because of the neglect or incompetence of someone else, such as their employer or the driver of a vehicle. Many people find that even after a minor accident they are unable to work for a couple of weeks because of their injuries, and then they find their wages are reduced (or not paid at all) resulting in household bills mounting up and domestic misery. Insurance companies take the view that those who have suffered minor injuries should just put up with the situation and not make a claim. For them, the loss to the injured person of perhaps several hundred pounds in wages and the pain and inconvenience experienced in the recovery process is not worth bothering with. However, they are very willing to receive your insurance premiums and you may be aware that currently most of the well known insurance companies are experiencing a significant increase in profits. I hope most readers will see through the tactics of the insurance industry and its supporters and not be put off from making legally justified and legitimate claims when they have been injured. I must of course declare an interest, because if more people instruct my firm to make injury compensation claims, the busier my staff will be, thus creating greater income and profit for my firm. However, in every successful claim it is the client who is the party that really feels the benefit. In relation to Personal Injury law, the legal system is supposed to put you back to the position that you would have been in had the accident not happened, but of course in reality this is usually impossible and

If an offence involving excess alcohol and driving, or being in charge, of a vehicle is in front of the courts the matter will be likely to have started with a suspicion of an individual being suspected of an excess alcohol related offence. If tests point to the individual being over the alcohol limit then the matter is likely to continue and culminate ultimately in a court hearing. There are different offences which can occur and different penalties which can be imposed. Below are some of the potential offences and penalties which may apply if a driver is charged and found guilty of a

hand to offer legal advice to Truckstop News readers. If you require advice or further information, head to www.marshallglover.com or call on 0844 801 1422. One of the offences some drivers have committed is using a mobile phone while driving. The legislation defines this offence as follows: No person is to drive a motor vehicle on a road if he is using a hand-held mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind. No person is to cause or permit any other person to drive a motor vehicle on a road while that other person is using a handheld mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind. No person is to supervise a holder of a provisional licence if the person supervising is using a hand-held mobile telephone or a hand-held device of a specified kind at a time when the provisional licence holder is driving a motor vehicle on a road.

following: sending or receiving oral or written messages; sending or receiving facsimile documents; sending or receiving still or moving images; and providing access to the internet. If you’re caught using a hand-held mobile phone or similar device while driving, you can expect to get an automatic fixed penalty notice. This means you’ll get three penalty points on your driving licence and have to pay a fine of £60. However, your case may go to court. If it does, you may also face disqualification from driving on top of a maximum fine of £1000. If you were driving a PCV or heavy goods vehicle, you could face a maximum fine of £2500. Also if the matter were considered of a serious nature you could face prosecution for other road transport related offences, which carry more serious sentences.

Parliament has recognised the inherent dangers caused by drivers of motor vehicles when using mobile telephones while driving and brought forward specific legislation. There has been an unacceptable increase in the number of vocational licence holders using mobile telephones without a hands free device while driving large goods and passenger carrying vehicles. This practice is unacceptable and presents an undue risk to road safety. Studies have indicated that even the use of hands-free devices can distract a driver to the extent that they may be prevented from applying the requisite care and attention. A report for an offence received from an enforcement agency that a vocational driver has used their mobile telephone while driving without a hands free device in the last three years will result in that driver being called to a hearing before the traffic commissioner. Each case will be decided on its own facts and merits and the presiding traffic commissioner will be keen to ascertain the reason the driver is engaged in the telephone call. In cases where drivers are speaking with their employers or their customers, the traffic commissioner may consider the effect this might have upon the operator’s repute”. So you are likely to be called to a hearing in order to show cause why an order should not be made. The guidelines which a traffic commissioner will be considering are to suspend vocational entitlement for 14 days, 21 days if driving a commercial vehicle, to commence with immediate effect. For a second and/or subsequent offence to multiply accordingly, for example, second offence in a commercial vehicle 2 x 21 days.

Cowern takes T with Renault

Company boss Clive Cowern tried out the Range T at Millbrook last October and came away impressed

H

aulage and pallet distribution specialist Clive Cowern Transport Services is taking delivery of three Renault Range T 460.25 tractor units into its Scania-dominated fleet. The Range Ts are supplied by Renault Trucks Midlands on a two-year contract hire deal through BRS Ltd and will go on the road in early 2014. Joining Clive Cowern Transport’s 44-strong mixed fleet, the three Range Ts will operate out

of the company’s Bridgnorth site undertaking general haulage and covering up to 140,000 km per year. The decision to select the Range Ts follows company MD Clive Cowern’s visit to the Renault Trucks’ ‘Be Part of the Story’ launch event for the new range at Millbrook Proving Ground last October, where he was able to put the new truck through its paces around the two-mile banked high-speed circle and hill route. “The Range T drives really well and the

MP slams M1 speed limit plans

A

n EU bid to cut pollution by slapping a 60 mph speed limit on motorists using a 32-mile stretch of the M1 has been savaged by an MP. Rob Flello, chairman of parliament’s Freight Transport Group, said a proposal to put the brakes on traffic between Junctions 28, near Matlock, and 35a, north of Rotherham, was “deeply flawed and would cause far more damage than benefit”. The Labour MP urged the government to push the idea onto the hard shoulder and ‘resist Brussels’. He said: “I can’t see BMW drivers from Bonn having to observe a speed limit on the autobahn, and yet Mr and Mrs Smith from Leicester will be forced to trundle up the M1 at 60 mph.” Mr Flello spoke after the Highways Agency, launching a consultation on the scheme, said the existing 70 mph limit was having ‘adverse effects on air quality’ and that cutting it would reduce emissions. It also said the new limit would deliver ‘reduced congestion, increased capacity and improved journey time reliability’. The agency said the restriction would apply from 7 am to 7 pm all week and was likely to remain for ‘several years’.

Failure to act, it added, was not an option. But in a letter to the government, Flello said: “Of course, improving air quality is of paramount importance, but this is the wrong approach. “The proposed speed restrictions will increase congestion on this critical route, increasing air pollution and harming both the regional and national economy. “They also fail to take into account the development of new engine technology which is making both commercial and private vehicles cleaner and more efficient.” The MP, who represents Stokeon-Trent South, said ministers should instead meet commercial vehicle manufacturers and focus on cutting congestion. His concerns, backed by much of the transport industry, are shared by the RAC, which has warned they could pave the way for similar restrictions on other sections of motorway. It has also said there would inevitably be a negative impact on business efficiency and individual mobility. The consultation closes on March 3. If approved, the new limit would be introduced in 2015.

gearbox is superb, which is what we were looking for,” Cowern said. “The cab is very well laid out with a good floor, so I can’t see any of our drivers complaining – which is important, because driver appeal is a key factor for us. “Fuel economy and reliability are critical to our operation, so we are looking forward to running the Range Ts against Euro 5 Scanias to put them to the test. If the Range Ts perform to expectation, we will be ordering more,” he concluded.

Barker Ross chases new drivers

B

arker Ross Logistics has formed a new, dedicated driving recruitment team which will be based in its Northampton office on the M1 corridor. The division will sit within the Barker Ross company which supplies forklift truck, multidrop, Class 1 or 2 drivers, administrators and supervisors. The driving team will be recruiting for temporary and permanent driving roles, offering an e-training health & safety programme and a dedicated support package for new starters. “We have a great deal of expertise in supplying temporary and permanent workers to all industries, but have found there has been increasing demand for drivers from an agency people can trust,” said the new team’s manager, Simon Gimson. “So it has been a logical step for us to form this dedicated division. Our dedication to thorough vetting, the fact we put safety first attracts clients and the emphasis we put on candidate care means we have the pick of the drivers.” Gimson added Northampton is an ideal place to run the new recruitment team, as the motorway network provides access to logistics and distribution companies along the M1 corridor and is centrally located for the rest of the UK.

Swedish manufacturer said its Streamline course can boost fuel efficiency for operators

S

cania (GB) Ltd has launched a one-day Streamline Euro 6 product course to provide fleet owners, fleet engineers and transport managers with comprehensive knowledge and practical experience of the manufacturer’s new aerodynamic truck. The course is delivered on-site at operator’s premises and includes an on-road driving experience in the customer’s own vehicle, suitable both for drivers and non-drivers. “The introduction of the Streamline vehicle represents a significant development for Scania product, and coupled with Euro 6 it has the potential to considerably affect operating costs,” said David Hickman, director – Services

Development & Service Sales for Scania (GB). “For example, in a recent independent test it was found the fuel consumption of an experienced driver on a known route could be increased by as much as four per cent when using the latest technology to best effect. “To get the best from our Streamline Euro 6 vehicles, it is essential managers appreciate the technology and understand what is required to achieve maximum efficiency in operation.” The one-day Streamline Euro 6 familiarisation course can be delivered to up to four delegates at a time, depending upon experience. WREFORD’S NEW TWINS DIG IN

N

orthampton operator SW Wreford Transport has taken delivery of two new DAF XF460 tractor units, with the firm earmarking one for making regular runs to Marseille and the other for undertaking intensive container work out of Felixstowe. The two DAF twin-steer FTG XF460 Super Space models are the first Euro 6 trucks to join the more than a century-old family firm’s 100-vehicle fleet, which is involved in general haulage both in the UK and on the Continent, groupage and dedicated contracts. Although on quite different work, each of the new DAFs is expected to cover a similar annual mileage of around 125,000 km. “We run a large number of DAFs and we know they are reliable and good on fuel, but that’s only part of the equation,” said fleet director, Andrew Wreford. “We have to consider parts costs and residual values as well. And we greatly value the first-class support we get from our local DAF dealer, Brian Currie, with whom we’ve had a long-standing relationship, and also direct from DAF itself.” Part of that support will come early in 2014 when fitters from the company will spend time at DAF’s UK headquarters in Oxfordshire attending a training course covering the

new technologies being used to achieve Euro 6 compliance. “We have a large and well-equipped workshop in which we maintain our own vehicles and do some third-party work and which includes an ATF lane,” Wreford said. “Being able to keep our fitters right up to date on the latest developments in truck technology is important. In the case of our new Euro 6 DAFs, that means both SCR technology and a more advanced form of EGR, along with diesel particulate filters – which are something new to us.” The trucks were spec’d with MX-13 engines rated at 460 bhp (340 kW) to give 10.45 bhp/tonne of power-to-weight at 44 tonnes, and 2300 Nm of torque between 1000-1400 rpm. A 12-speed AS-Tronic automated transmission and single-reduction drive axle completes the driveline.

Brittany bigs-up giant gas ferry

B

rittany Ferries has announced it has placed an order for a new gas-powered vessel to add freight capacity on Spanish routes. The ferry will be the firm’s largest yet – and one of the biggest such ships in the world. What’s more, the company said it will also be the cleanest, most environmentally friendly ship to operate in UK waters as it will run on liquefied natural gas (LNG), which emits about 25 per cent less carbon dioxide during combustion than marine fuel oil and burns with no smoke. It is entirely free of sulphur, and is very low in nitrogen oxide emissions. Brittany Ferries and STX France have been co-operating for two years on a study regarding the feasibility of powering a ferry by LNG. The ship, costing €270 million (£225 million), will be built by STX France in St

Nazaire and will enter service in late spring 2017. The new ship will replace Brittany Ferries’ current flagship, Pont-Aven, which will move to the Portsmouth-St Malo route. Operating on the longer routes between UK and Spain, she will have many of Pont-Aven’s features, but with a much larger garage. Simon Wagstaff, group freight director, said: “This order represents a huge investment and a long-term commitment by Brittany Ferries to its highly successful services to Santander and Bilbao. “The new vessel will provide significantly more freight capacity to northern Spain. Furthermore, the range and quality of facilities provided for freight drivers by the new vessel will set Brittany Ferries apart from its competitors.”

Young drivers’ time to shine

S

cania’s Young European Truck Driver competition, which is aimed at promoting the highest standards of driving and road safety among Europe’s young drivers, is returning for a sixth time in 2014. During the event, entrants from 26 countries will compete throughout the year for the ultimate prize of a new Scania R-series truck worth €100,000. “Young European Truck Driver has been the world’s premier driving skills competition for more than 10 years now,” said Scania (Great Britain) Ltd managing director, Claes Jacobsson. “During this time, many thousands of young drivers have participated, and all have worked hard to develop their performance behind the wheel as they endeavour to be crowned Europe’s top young truck driver. “We are immensely proud of this record, as it means commercial vehicle drivers the length and breadth of Europe are now driving more safely and efficiently as a result. Young European Truck Driver is open to all LGV C+E drivers aged 35 or under. This year, all entries are being made via the website www. scania.co.uk/yetd – where drivers registering for the event are asked to create an online profile, after which they take a multiple-choice driving-knowledge test from which the 12

Working together, we can help build a better industry for all. leading entrants will be determined. These top 12 performers will be then invited to a driving skills event at Scania’s Milton Keynes headquarters on Sunday, July 27. Here, participants will be whittled down to ‘six of the best’, each of whom will be invited to take part in the Young European Truck Driver UK Final at Truckfest Original on August 30/31 at the Newark & Notts Showground. Once the UK’s overall winner has been selected, he or she will travel to Sweden as the guest of Scania (GB) to take part in the European Final (September 12/13), which is where the event’s top prize of a new Scania R-series truck will be awarded. Closing date for entries into this year’s competition is June 15.

The new FAD CF85 410 Grab Loader vehicle is the latest to be added to Cardy’s 10-strong DAF tipper fleet, which delivers aggregates including sand, gravel and recycled products such as crushed brick and concrete as well as collecting waste material from project sites around the East of England.

Cardy Haulage said new DAF Grab Truck highlights renewed confidence in construction

The business has invested in the new vehicle - which is the second one on its fleet - to handle the increasing number of homeimprovement, self-build and landscaping projects currently being undertaken in the region. The vehicle’s central grab facility is suitable for material removal from sites where there is no digger presence, and for generally inaccessible locations such as over low walls or fences where the use of diggers or similar machines is not possible. The drivers of the vehicles are fully trained and certificated to operate the specialist grab equipment. Wendy Cardy, speaking on behalf of the family-owned and run business, said: “The new Grab Loader is particularly popular with small independent construction companies who are seeing an increase in the number of individual home build and other commercial projects in the county. “There is a new confidence in this type of building project, which is why we have invested in the new truck – and we hope to see this additional activity continue as it is a sign things are picking up across all sectors,” she added.

At Mercedes-Benz we like to do things properly and we think you do too. So when it comes to driver training, we always aim to go that bit further and deliver a product that is ahead of the rest. That’s why our training is more about improving every aspect of driver and industry professionalism, and not just about reaching a legislation standard. We’ve put a lot of thought and effort into our courses too, and not only are they fully interactive and interesting, we’ve made them enjoyable too. Come see. Come train with us. We’re professionals and we think you are too. For more information call 0800 090 090, or visit www.mercedes-benzdrivertraining.co.uk.

Volvo Trucks has lifted the lid on its all-new FH series of heavy trucks, designed with the driver in mind and a focus on fuel economy.

Details were scarce when we went to press ahead of the official launch on September 5, but the Swedish manufacturer told Truckstop News the new FHs will be available in both Euro 5 and 6 form, and pack a vast amount of upgrades and improvements. Leading the charge for fuel efficiency is Volvoʼs new I-See function (Truckstop News, issue 301). The system, which works alongside the I-Shift automated transmission, is claimed to cut consumption by five per cent by storing information about the route the truck drives along. “The next time the truck uses the same route, I-See operates the accelerator, gears and brakes to ensure progress is as economical as possible,” said Claes Nilsson, president, Volvo Truck Corporation. An additional five per cent saving in fuel use is possible with Volvo Trucksʼ new Fuel Package. This package encompasses training and monthly assistance – Fuel Advice – and its aim is to cut fuel costs by changing driving styles and increasing knowledge of how to drive for maximum fuel-efficiency. Volvoʼs new I-Torque Euro 6 driveline – production of which for the European market will get under way in autumn 2013 – should make for additional fuel savings. “ITorque reduces fuel consumption by up to With its new Volvo FH series, Volvo is ʻpushing four the envelopeʼ in re-defining what a premium per cent. Together with I-See and other minor truck can offer. improvements, the result is fuel consumption can drop by up to 10 per cent. For the average truck, this can equate to a saving of up to 4100 litres of fuel a year,” Nilsson continued. On-road manners have received much attention, and Volvo is claiming the new trucks offer exceptional handling thatʼs much like a car. “To put things into perspective, we can even offer independent front suspension, although initially only on left-hand drive vehicles. This world-first takes handling to unsurpassed levels in the truck world,” Nilsson said.

Also of benefit to drivers are improved seats and driving position, optimised to provide a better view of the road. This is aided by an increase in the cabʼs usable window area and an innovative slimmer rear-view mirror design. Stalks and controls are arranged in priority so the most important ones are now closest to the driver, and the steering wheel now has a neck tilt function – another world-first in the truck world. Safety is high on the agenda, An all-new cab structure features more upright A-pillars, which give the cab an additional 1 m3 of interior space. This means an extra 300 litres (10.5 cu ft) of storage capacity, as well as greater comfort on board.“The cab is optimised both for work and leisure time,” Nilsson said. “A better bed, integrated parking cooler, new lighting and low noise levels among other features, all increase the chance of pleasant relaxation and a good nightʼs sleep, which in turn means drivers are less tired and more alert.” Production of the Volvo FH will start in spring 2013 for the European market.

If your claim is successful you keep 100% of the compensation recovered.

ith its new Goathill quarry now in full operation, Cowdenbeath-based stone and aggregates supplier Collier Group has taken delivery of a new, highly specified V8-engined Scania R620 6x2 tag-axle tractor unit. The truck is earmarked for operation with a Weightlifter stepframe bulk tipping trailer, and the outfit is fitted with Hyva hydraulic tipping equipment throughout. Collier said when it comes to spec’ing tipping gear, most of the hard work done during tipping is actually performed by the wet kit mounted on the tractor. “The quality, reliability and performance of the wet kit is really the key component when tipping with artics,” said company director, Duncan Collier. “Not just that, but the equipment has to be easy to use and easy to fit. “Controllability is also very important – usually we want a fast up/down tipping cycle, but sometimes we might need the trailer just to go up very slowly on not much more than engine tickover. “Hyva wet kits let us do everything – and

with complete reliability, too.” Backing up the artics in Collier’s fleet are a dozen Volvo FM rigids fitted with Hyva FE149 eye-end tipping cylinders, which work in conjunction with high-capacity bulk bodies built by Weightlifter Scotland. With their sides as high as the cab roof and a front bulkhead brought as close as possible to the cab’s rear wall, the maximum practical payload volume is achieved. “Whether trailers or rigids, bulk bodies are key to our operation,” Collier said. “They allow us to carry any product whatsoever, from stone and sand through to recycling materials. Using Hyva eye-end tipping gears inside the front bulkhead means they are also fully protected from accidental damage, which in turn gives us 100 per cent tipping reliability.” Working outwards from Goathill delivering a full range of sand, gravel and stone (including 40,000 tonnes of Rock Armour for Fife Council), the Collier trucks usually return carrying soil, road planings and demolition material for the company’s nearby waste recycling centre.

HATHAWAY READY FOR GROWTH

S

outh-West logistics provider David Hathaway Transport has said it is gearing up for growth following the completion of refurbishment work at its new depot in Royal Wootton Bassett. The company, which acquired the £1.2m property in 2013, has spent more than six months customising the 35,000 sq ft facility. Hathaway said its new facility, situated close to Junction 16 of the M4, is ideally placed to support the company’s existing customers in the Swindon, Reading and

Oxford area. It will also serve as a base from which to grow the operator’s presence in the South Central region. The new warehousing facilities will be managed by Buddy Earp, who joined David Hathaway in 2013. Earp is also responsible for overseeing warehousing operations at the company’s Yate headquarters. “Our rapidly expanding customer portfolio meant we needed to increase our warehousing capability,” said firm MD, Matthew Hathaway. “Close to our existing facilities in Yate, the site at Royal Wootton Bassett was a natural choice and it’s already proving to be a valuable asset. “Over the next two years, we plan to significantly grow our business and we want to be seen as the logistics partner of choice for organisations looking for a high-quality, bespoke service.” Founded in 1976, David Hathaway Transport specialises in pallet distribution, pallet storage, road haulage and warehousing. The company employs more than 100 people across its sites and has a fleet of 64 Hathaway’s new facility in Royal Wootton vehicles. Bassett sits close to J16 on the M4

A HILARY DEVEY DRAGONS’ DEN INVESTMENT

BOGNOR SCAFFOLD LORRY SEIZED

A

Bognor Regis scaffolder with an “obvious contempt” for the law and public safety has lost his appeal for the return of an impounded vehicle that was being used illegally. Traffic commissioner Nick Denton refused owner Nicolas Riley’s application to regain the confiscated vehicle, saying he had no confidence at all in Mr Riley’s truthfulness and readiness to comply with the law. Riley was stopped by government inspectors in November 2013 using an 18-tonne vehicle without an operator’s licence – which he needed to transport goods for his scaffolding business. An examiner from the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (incorporating VOSA and DSA) also found Riley – driving his 18-tonne lorry - had never passed a driving test for any vehicle over 3.5 tonnes. At the time he was stopped, he had no driving licence of any kind, as even his licence to drive cars had been revoked. Riley subsequently asked Mr Denton, the haulage industry regulator for London and the South East of England, to return the vehicle on the grounds that he had not used it unlawfully. During a hearing on December 17, Riley claimed that, at the time he was stopped, the vehicle was being used to move rubbish

from his mother’s house. He was therefore not carrying out any commercial work. However, Mr Denton noted photographic evidence from the DVSA which showed scaffolding equipment in the vehicle. In a written decision, Denton concluded Riley’s claim he was not using the vehicle for commercial purposes “stretches credulity”. The vehicle was carrying scaffolding, but Riley had failed to produce any evidence to support his claim that the vehicle was not being used in connection with his scaffolding business. Denton also took into account Mr Riley’s history of illegal operation. “Mr Riley has a history of operating without an operator’s licence, and indeed of driving without a driver’s licence and without insurance. He had previously been stopped in September 2012 driving a HGV without a driving licence for heavy goods vehicles, without insurance and without an operator’s licence. He was prosecuted and convicted for all three offences.” He added: “A year later, Mr Riley has committed all three offences again. Clearly he is someone who sets little store by the law. “He has persisted in driving an 18-tonne HGV without ever having passed a driving test for anything more than a car. His lorry remains confiscated and will now be disposed of.”

WINCANTON WINS WITH WHS

W

incanton has been awarded a three-year extension to its transport management contract with UK retail group WH Smith. According to David McKinlay, supply chain director at WH Smith, crucial to the contract extension was the way in which Wincanton demonstrated its ability to not only reduce operational costs, but also further cut WH Smith’s carbon emissions - a key corporate social responsibility target for the retailer. “With an increase in stores, currently 1042 locations on high streets and at motorway services and airports, together with aggressive fuel inflation, we needed fresh ideas and innovation to create a step-change in the way we were utilising transport,” he said. “I’m delighted to say Wincanton has met this challenge head-on, creating significant

economies of scale by combining our transport operations with those of other retailers and manufacturers.” To find the efficiencies, Wincanton deployed TMC (Transport Management Centre) telematics technology, simplifying the management of journeys and routes by optimising resources usage and productivity. In essence the system allows transport schedules to be run on a “bus stop” basis, with drivers and trucks allocated to preplanned routes, giving greater management of overall fleet performance and the ability to pre-advise stores of impending arrivals or delays. The contract covers Wincanton’s work for WH Smith hubs in Swindon, Dunstable and Birmingham, as well as managing the performance of collaborative partners in the South West, North West and Scotland.

CPC CONUNDRUM

Having read various articles about the required Driver CPC, which drivers will have to carry if they want to continue driving for a living, I find I must ask a few questions about having to hold this necessary document. It will cost me or the company I work for over £300, and as I will be 65 next January (2015), I don’t see how for a few months I will be a safer driver on the roads of Britain, just because I have been sitting in a classroom for 35 hours.

I have been driving for 47 years now, all over Europe. I’ve had my own international business for 15 years, I hold the original CPC and I am a qualified driver assessor, and I have never had a claim against me for a road traffic accident. During my time on the road, I have been picked on a few times by some very inexperienced drivers who will not have to satisfy anyone that they are good car drivers. Seems to me that again, HGV drivers are an easy target, and all

the future holds for this industry is a major shortage of home-grown drivers – though there will be plenty of foreign drivers to fill the shortages. So the end story is that drivers like myself with lots of experience with a short time left to go are being forced out of work unless we cough up to another government body. There must be many drivers in a similar situation to me. Frank Yates By email

CHRISTMAS SPIRIT I am senior chaplain for Glory Road Truckers Ministry. For the past three years at Christmas time, we have handed out gift bags to truck drivers at truck stops around the country. The gift bags contain Christmas treats, candy cane, chocolate bar, can of de-icer, scraper, polishing cloth, polish, diary, pen, gloves, hat, Jeff Lucas travelling light booklet, one of our contact cards, and a hand-written Christmas card with message of appreciation. We put all the gifts into a Christmas bottle gift bag. We left Stonehouse in Gloucestershire, at 06.30 on Saturday December 14, and our first stop was Junction 29 Truckstop on the M1 at Chesterfield. We arrived at 08.45, and as there were quite a few trucks there, we got on with handing the gift bags out to the drivers. The reaction was amazing – the drivers could not believe we were doing this for them. We had lots of “Wow, really?” and “No one has ever shown such kindness to us”. We even had a driver who said: “I thought people saw us as scum.” Isn’t that sad? We gave out 50 bags there, and

repeated the process at The Stockyard Truck Stop at Rotherham, Doncaster services, on the M18; and finally Killingholme Truck Stop, near Grimsby. Here we gave out another 30 bags to drivers, including a driver from Trafford Park, Manchester, who when we gave him a bag, he said with tears in his eyes: “In 42 years driving trucks, no one has shown such kindness to me.” We gave out 90 gift bags in total, and arrived back in Gloucestershire at 00.45 on Sunday morning, tired but extremely blessed. Glory Road has bookstands at truck stops around the UK, where drivers can pick up bibles, tracts, CDs, books etc. We give all these things away free of charge – freely we have received, so freely we give. We also help ex-Service personnel who came into driving after leaving the forces suffering from PTSD and related problems. We have recently filmed Songs of Praise for the BBC, which will be shown on January 18, 2014, and the piece features an exRoyal Marine sniper who served in the first Gulf War, and came to us for help with anger issues, low self-esteem and survivors’ mentality. I have been helping him for three years. He was very close to ending his life when he contacted us, but thankfully this story has a happy ending. However, quite a few don’t. Chris Newport By email

HERE, HERE! I would just like to say after reading Speakbacks in December’s issue of your fine newspaper, I completely agree with Arnold Clark’s letter on showers at motorway services and the standards (or lack of standards!) they are kept in. I do feel it should be something you could look into in more detail – and, yes, try and bring those bosses to answer. Chris Jones By email

British Military Trucks of World War One Author: Tim Gosling Publisher: Tankograd Publishing Web: www. tankograd.co.uk Price: €39

Rating: 

This new book from respected military author Tim Gosling takes a detailed look at the Britishand non-British trucks built for service in the British Army, Royal Navy and Royal Flying Corps during the Great War of 19141918. When you look at the numbers, the sheer scale of the conflict and the impact it had on European vehicle manufacturing

GOING UNDERGROUND I am writing to you because I have a problem with my Snooper DB8500. The problem is that when I am in Rotterdam, the Snooper, even though it is set to Tunnel Category B, still tries to route me via Category C/D tunnels – which, if you pass through the tunnels with the hazardous products we carry, it will incur a very heavy fine. Also in this area of Rotterdam is a prescribed hazardous route, which the Snooper ignores. I and three other colleagues have the same issues with the Snooper, and I contacted the company in June this year regarding the issue. Snooper informed me they cannot replicate this problem. Therefore, the problem remains with no solution. Through your newspaper, would you be able to ascertain whether this is a problem with just a few units, or whether it is a much wider problem across the whole range of Snooper units? David Hoyle By email Thanks for your email, David. We contacted Stephen Ballard, Snooper’s marketing & product director, with your query, and here’s his reply: “First, I would like to apologise that we did not manage to satisfactorily resolve your issue when you first spoke to our technical department. I am not happy that the only response we appear to have given you is that we couldn’t replicate the problem ourselves. Clearly you had an issue, or you wouldn’t have contacted us, so I am sorry we have not provided a better service in this regard. “Since Truckstop News contacted us, we have conducted some tests on the latest mapping and software available for Truckmate and as far as we can see, the tunnel code function now appears to be is mind-boggling. At the beginning of the war, the British Army had access to only 80 trucks and 20 cars – but compare that to the 59,490 motor trucks and 33,800 cars and ambulances at work for the Army by the end of 1918, and it’s clear to see how motorised transport was deemed crucial to the war effort. Publisher Tankograd is claiming British Military Trucks of World War One is the first book that presents a comprehensive and authoritative review of the vehicles at work during the war, which alongside UK builds, also covers trucks the British Army sourced from other countries (chiefly America). Alongside its exploration of the common marques and models roped in for military service, the book also delves into the more niche areas of manoeuvres that required manufacturers to create specialist builds of workshop trucks, tankers, gun trucks, steam wagons, traction engines and tractors. The book has been published to commemorate the 100th anniversary of World War One,

working as it should be. We have checked your account and note that you actually have old software on your unit, so it could be there was an issue with that version of the software. “We have also discussed the issue with Navteq (now called ‘Here’) which provides us with the core mapping and tunnel codes, and it has run further tests which again seem to suggest everything is working as it should be. “We have checked the the route with the latest mapping and software and Truckmate avoids the tunnels as necessary. This leads me to believe any issues you have seen are no longer present, and we are sending you and your colleagues the latest software and mapping on SD card to save you downloading it manually from our website. “Truckmate software has been designed to avoid legal restrictions and then to take the next best available legal route, but ADR is something different as that would involve us creating software directing vehicles on very specific routes in addition. This may be something that can be done in the future, and I have discussed this with our development team who are going to research it.” and has been limited to 999 copies. Inside its 200 pages, the book offers 396 black-andwhite photographs – almost all of which, according to Tankograd, have never before been published.

This box set bundles together a DVD and hardback book that takes a glossy look at classic commercial vehicles. The video content on offer contains interesting archive footage of some vintage British vehicles, and the book serves as a decent introduction to the subject. That said, there are more complete and in-depth DVDs and books available from other publishers that will better serve the more clued-up enthusiast.

STOBART SIGNS UP SPEEDING DRIVERS FOR NEW SCANIAS PILE ON THE PRESSURE

A

Stobart and AW Jenkinson fleets will receive new Euro 6 Scanias over next 24 months

E

ddie Stobart, AW Jenkinson Forest Products and Scania (Great Britain) have announced the continuation of a joint-procurement agreement which will see 1500 Scania Euro 6 vehicles introduced into the two operators’ fleets during 2014 and 2015. The agreement, which will see vehicles ordered on an on-going basis throughout the coming 24 months, covers a variety of specifications and transport applications. To date, an initial order for 150 chassis has been placed for a mix of 410 bhp G-series 4x2 models with sleeper cabs for the Eddie Stobart fleet, 450 bhp R-series 6x2 tractor units with Highline cabs for AW Jenkinson and a number of 450 bhp R-series

sleeper-cabbed 8x2*6 drawbar rigids for specialist operations with Stobart Rail. All vehicles supplied will be maintained by the nationwide Scania dealer network. “Our decision to continue taking Scania vehicles is based on their proven record within the Eddie Stobart and AW Jenkinson fleets so far, so we saw no reason but to continue this relationship as we enter into the Euro 6 production,” said Stobart Group CEO, William Stobart. “The new deal gives us a lot of flexibility going forward.” The agreement was sealed with a visit by William Stobart to the headquarters of Scania in Sweden on January 9, where he met with Scania CEO and president, Martin Lundstedt.

In the current climate, many workplaces are already stretched and employers are aware they have a responsibility to protect their staff from undue stress. “That is why it is important unauthorised absence is managed consistently and fairly to help minimise the impact on the wider workforce, and ensure diligent colleagues aren’t left to pick up the slack on a regular basis.” The Business Barometer also showed the ‘fit note’, which was introduced by the government to help minimise the cost of absenteeism, does not seem to be as effective as first hoped. As many as 30 per cent of employers polled in the transport industry say it has not lived up to their expectations.

survey of motorists in Britain, France, Germany and Spain conducted by MiX Telematics has revealed 63 per cent of all drivers admit to speeding while driving for work, with more than a third (34 per cent) admitting they speed every week. When asked why they do it, the most common responses were keeping up with traffic flow (53 per cent) and pressure to meet schedules (37 per cent). Among drivers in France responding to this question, 27 per cent reported their speeding was due to a lack of concentration. This response was almost double that of drivers in the other countries, the next nearest being Germany, where 14 per cent of drivers blame concentration lapses. “The knowledge that two-thirds of drivers in Britain, France, Germany and Spain routinely speed while going about their employer’s business is a concern to companies in each of these countries,” said Steve Coffin, marketing and operations director for MiX Telematics (Europe). “Our survey also found more than three quarters of all drivers – 77 per cent – receive no training whatsoever related to speeding while driving for work.” In terms of where drivers speed, more

than 40 per cent of all drivers who admit to speeding while driving for work said they do so on motorways, main roads and in urban areas. There were, however, some significant differences among these drivers, with drivers in Britain saying they are most likely to speed on motorways (63 per cent), drivers in Germany on main inter-urban roads and drivers in France and Spain reporting the likelihood of them speeding is approximately equal regardless of the type of road upon which they are travelling. Overall, drivers reckon there’s only a small chance of serious consequences for exceeding the speed limit. Should there be a consequence, drivers reported being stopped by the police is the most likely. In terms of drivers being fined for exceeding the speed limit over the past 12 months, truck drivers led the way with 17 per cent receiving penalties, compared to 14 per cent of van drivers, 12 per cent of bus and coach drivers and nine per cent of passenger vehicle drivers. In most cases, the driver was far more likely to pay the fine than his/her employer, the only exception being bus and coach drivers where the split was 50-50.
