CIVIL ENGINEERING
Civil Engineering is the design and development of everything that’s built around us, including key infrastructure such as roads, railways, hospitals, water and power supply and much more.
Civil Engineers are the scientific minds behind the way our towns and cities work. Combining their practical and theoretical knowledge of engineering, they are heavily involved in the planning, management, budgeting and analysis of projects, big and small.
Civil Engineering is a highly rewarding and varied profession, ranging from theoretical planning to hands-on practical aspects of projects – Civil Engineers can take great pride looking at skyscrapers and bridges, saying ‘I built that’.
What are the main duties:
– Working in an outdoor environment
– Applying maths in a real-life environment
– Helping to contribute to the safety and environmental aspects of a project
– Setting out and producing surveys to help manage quality on projects

QUANTITY SURVEYING
Quantity surveyors manage the costs and budget of construction and civil projects from the outset to completion. Therefore, you will ensure the costs of the project do not exceed the budget.
What are the main duties:
– More of an officebased work environment
– Managing the finances of a multimillion-pound project
– Liaising with subcontractors, suppliers, and clients
– Helping to ensure the financial success of a project
– Paying subcontractors and managing budgets for packages of works
– Becoming an expert in contracts, financial management and contract law

CONSTRUCTION SITE MANAGEMENT
Construction Site Managers deal with the day-to-day running of a construction project from start to finish and are responsible for overseeing timely project progress and client satisfaction.
What are the main duties:
– Day to day responsibility for delivering a project
– Working outside on a live project environment
– Front line management of people and resources
– Managing health, safety, and quality control
– Co-ordinating subcontractors and suppliers
– Working on projects such as schools, hospitals, office, and commercial buildings

A Keltbray apprenticeship is a career opportunity that incorporates structured on-the-job learning supplemented with academic qualifications, working alongside our experienced professionals. Keltbray will give you tasks to perform, and a training provider will equip you with the theoretical skills to perform those tasks.

Apprenticeships
EDUCATIONAL ESTABLISHMENT
You will be enrolled in to either a College, University or Training Provider depending on the apprenticeship you choose to undertake. They will provide you with the knowledge and understanding required to achieve your academic qualification.
WORK PLACEMENTS
You will gain hands-on experience in the workplace through allocated placements to help you develop a thorough understanding of your specialism in order to support your academic studies.
MENTOR SUPPORT
You will be assigned a mentor who will support your orientation into the workplace, provide an insight and understanding of the organisation and provide advice and guidance relating to the learning and training aspects of your apprenticeship.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
With all of our technical pathways, you will work towards a professional chartership such as Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE), Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).

The length of your apprenticeship will depend on your existing experience, qualifications and the job role you choose. This table explains the different levels of apprenticeship we typically offer at Keltbray:

Undergraduates and graduates
PLACEMENT PROGRAMMES
– Keltbray offer summer and year-out industrial placements to individuals who are planning on or currently studying for a construction-related degree
– We offer work placements in engineering, construction and surveying, allowing you to put theory into action on one of our projects
Keltbray’s placement programmes offer you the chance to gain valuable hands-on work experience before you graduate and, in many cases these opportunities often lead to a full-time graduate position
– Placements can vary in length, between 6-8 weeks for a summer placement and up to a year in length for your year-out industrial placement
GRADUATE PROGRAMMES
– We offer structured development in a professional workplace environment, leading to the appropriate chartered status
– We have well-established relationships with a range of professional institutions and industry partners, which means we can innovate our programmes ahead of the industry and nurture your skills to help you meet your ambitions

Ewart Mason DEMOLITION OPERATIVE
I was left unemployed after the COVID-19 pandemic. I came across an opportunity to become Demolition Operative Apprentice. The apprenticeship is a total of 18 months in which I will learn a number of skills such as slinger signalling, mobile elevating work platforms and asbestos awareness and removal.
These skills will allow me to progress confidently and competently in my role as a Demolition Operative. I am looking forward to completing my apprenticeship and gaining valuable experience.
It’s also a paid role so you won’t end up with huge amounts of student loan debt.
I believe that apprenticeships are one of the best ways to develop because it involves on the job learning that provides a structured pathway into your desired role.

Kirsty Antcliffe QUANTITY SURVEYOR
I first got into the construction industry as a Trainee Buyer. After a year I gained a greater insight into the construction industry and decided to pursue a career as a Quantity Surveyor as I liked spending time on-site and working within a wider project team.
I completed a ‘Level 6 Chartered Surveyor Degree Apprenticeship BSc (Hons)’ at Nottingham Trent University.
This was a five-year course followed by professional development via the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence leading to membership of the Royal Institute of the Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
I think an apprenticeship is a fantastic opportunity for anyone to learn valuable skills whilst gaining a qualification.
Furthermore, completing
Completing this route in contrast to a graduate route has definitely fastforwarded my career and enabled me to reach my goals quicker.
