Queridos amigos Tan solo el hecho de que nos estéis leyendo en estos momentos es señal de que hemos podido hacer una de las cosas que más nos gusta y satisface: trabajar una entretenida parrilla de contenidos para nuestra edición de verano. Es imposible obviar la difícil y preocupante situación por la que venimos pasando desde hace meses. Pero también es cierto que ante las adversidades, el ser humano se fortalece. Por eso y porque todos los que confiáis en nosotros desde hace años os merecéis que sigamos aquí, dispuestos y con todos nuestros recursos para afrontar nuevas entregas de KE Sotogrande Magazine, lanzamos nuestra edición digital de verano con las mismas ganas y el mismo entusiasmo del primer día. De manera que sí, que el verano está aquí. MACA RENA Gómez Aunque el papel que más ha popularizado el rostro de Macarena Gómez sea el de Lola Trujillo en la serie “La que se avecina”, la realidad es que si algo acumula esta cordobesa con sangre leonesa es trabajo y experiencia en cine, televisión, cortometrajes, videoclips, teatro y publicidad. Tras una voz dulce, que parece tornarse ingenua, se esconde una actriz con un profundo conocimiento de su juego ante las cámaras y sobre los escenarios, que le ha permitido la formación, el trabajo y el esfuerzo incesante. Hoy por hoy, afincada felizmente con su marido y su hijo en tierras catalanas, la actriz se centra en levantar sus propios proyectos de producción y continúa multiactiva en una profesión que le permite seguir disfrutando y aprendiendo. ¿Qué tiene Macarena Gómez de cordobesa y qué de leonesa o catalana? Yo soy cordobesa de nacimiento y de espíritu. Corre sangre leonesa por mis venas y soy una enamorada literalmente de un catalán y de la tierra catalana. Son dos provincias y una comunidad a las cuales amo muchísimo. Si para ti ser actriz es como un juego, ¿cómo te gusta jugar la partida? ¿Cuáles son tus mejores técnicas de juego? Para mí interpretar es un juego, porque gracias a Dios me divierto haciéndolo. También porque me da muchas satisfacciones. No me gusta hacer trampas. He llevado mi carrera profesional durante veinte años sin pisar a nadie, estoy donde estoy gracias a mi esfuerzo. Como si estuviera jugando al parchís, casilla por casilla sin comerme a nadie. Mi mejor técnica es trabajar mucho, porque mientras más trabajo más aprendo. Y conforme más aprendo, más tácticas adquiero y mejor sé interpretar.

Behind that sweet voice that is almost naïve, is an actress with a profound knowledge of the game in front of the cameras and on stage. This has allowed her to gain experience working and putting in effort the whole time. These days this actress is happily settled with her husband and son in Catalonia where she is centred on building up her own production projects and continues to be very active in this profession that allows her to enjoy and learn continuously. What part of Macarena Gómez is from Cordoba, from Leon or Catalonia? I am from Cordoba, born and bred, and in my soul. I have blood from Leon running through my veins and I am literally in love with a man from Catalonia and Catalan soil. They are two provinces and a region that I dearly love. If being an actress for you is like a game, how do you like to play it? What are the best techniques of the game? Acting is a game for me, because thankfully I enjoy doing it. It also gives me a lot of satisfaction. I do not like cheating. I have been in this business for twenty years without stepping on anyone’s toes; I am here thanks to my endeavour. It is like playing Parcheesi, square by square without stepping on anyone. My best tactic is to work hard because while I am working, I am learning. The more I learn the more tactics I gain and the better I am at acting.

En qué te ha beneficiado para tu trabajo como actriz tu pasado como bailarina clásica? Me ha beneficiado porque el hecho de subirme a un escenario, enfrentarme a un público y bailar, me ha dado muchísima seguridad cuando luego estoy en el teatro o cuando tengo que enfrentarme a la cámara de cine o televisión. Por otro lado, me ha permitido tener un conocimiento de mi cuerpo muy grande y eso lo utilizo mucho a la hora de componer personajes. Teniendo padres médicos, ¿cómo llegó la decisión de querer ser actriz? Yo he tenido la suerte de que mis padres desde muy chiquitita me han inculcado el amor por el arte. A los 4 años me apuntaron a ballet, me llevaban a ver mucho teatro, al cine, a museos… Yo era muy buena estudiante y muy responsable. Y a los 14 años, cuando les dije que quería ser actriz mis padres estaban encantados, me apoyaron y me llevaron a estudiar a las mejores escuelas. Me dijeron que si no me iba bien, tenía capacidad para estudiar otra carrera. Pero a la vista está que me ha ido muy bien y mis padres se sienten muy orgullosos de mí. ¿Qué es lo más valioso que te han enseñado tus padres? Mis padres desde muy chiquitita siempre me dijeron: querer es poder. Todo lo que quieras conseguir en la vida, a base de esfuerzo y de trabajo lo conseguirás. Y creo que lo he conseguido.

How has your past as a classic ballet dancer helped you as an actress? It has helped due to the fact that I have been up on stage, facing an audience and dancing. This has given me a great deal of confidence when I am in the theatre or behind the camera on film or TV. On the other hand, this has allowed me to get to know my own body a lot better and how to use it when I have to portray the roles. Both your parents are doctors, when did you decide on becoming an actress? I have been lucky from an early age my parents have taught me to love the arts. When I was 4, they signed me up for ballet, they took me a lot to the theatre, cinema, museums...I was a very good student and very responsible. When I told my parents at the age of 14 that I wanted to become an actress, they were delighted and supported me, and enrolled me in the best schools. They told me that if things did not work out, I had the ability to study another degree. Clearly, things have gone well for me and my parents are really proud of me. What is the most valuable thing your parents have taught you? My parents from an early age have always told me that where there is a will, there is a way. Everything you want to achieve in life with work and effort, you can. And I believe that I have fulfilled my goals.

Ahora como madre, ¿cuáles son los valores que te gusta inculcar a tu hijo? Aún es muy pequeño y le enseño los valores que creo se le deben inculcar a un niño: compañerismo, solidaridad, respeto, tolerancia… Pero lo que sí me gusta mucho es explotar su lado creativo, he descubierto que desde muy pequeñito es una persona muy creativa e imaginativa.

Now as a mother, what are the values you are teaching your son? He is still very young and I am teaching him values I think should be taught to a child, comradeship, solidarity, respect, tolerance... But what I like most is for him to explore his creative side. I have discovered from an early age he is a very creative and imaginative person.

¿Qué personaje ha sido el mayor reto hasta el momento? Los dos personajes más difíciles para mí, que han supuesto un reto han sido Tana, en la película Del lado del verano, de Antonia San Juan, porque era un personaje muy introvertido, que no expresaba sus sentimientos y eso está muy alejado de mí. Tuve que hacer un gran ejercicio de contención. Y el otro en Pieles, porque no podía ver los ojos de mi compañera actriz. Sentía que no era capaz de reaccionar. Yo soy una actriz que trabaja mucho a través de la mirada y el no poder usarla para transmitir pensamientos o emociones… y, al mismo tiempo, no poder ver la mirada de mi compañera, hizo que me sintiera un poco perdida durante el rodaje. Sin embargo luego el resultado me gustó mucho.

What role has been the biggest challenge so far? The two roles that have been the most difficult and challenging are Tana, in the film “Del lado del verano” directed by Antonia San Juan, because the character was very introverted, who did not express her feelings and that is very different to me. I had to make a big effort to restrain myself. The other was Skins (“Pieles”) because I could not see the eyes of my female co-star. I felt that I could not react. I am an actress who works a lot with eye contact and not being able to use it to transmit thoughts or emotions... And at the same time, not being able to see the look on my colleague’s face, meant that I felt a bit lost during filming. However, I really liked the end result.

¿Cuál sería el papel de tu vida? El de ser madre. Creo que es el papel más difícil de interpretar. Además de poder seguir viéndote como Lola Trujillo en La que se avecina, ¿en qué proyectos podremos verte próximamente? Voy a estrenar el próximo 24 de julio una película que he coproducido, que se llama Amor en polvo. Tengo muchas películas que desgraciadamente se hacen con bajo presupuesto y están guardadas en un cajón y no sabemos cuándo van a salir a la luz. Una de ellas se llama 75 días y otra, Las pesadillas de Alberto Soto. También tengo algunos doblajes, entre ellos una peli de animación. Aunque más que nada ahora estoy muy involucrada en la producción, estoy intentando levantar mis propios proyectos: una serie de televisión, una película y cortometrajes.

What would be the role of your life? Being a mum. It is the most difficult role to play. Apart from being able to see you as Lola Trujillo in La que se avecina, what other projects will we be able to see you in soon? A new film called “Amor en polvo”, which I have co-produced, premieres on 24th July. I have a lot of films that unfortunately are low budget and have been kept in a drawer and we do not know when they will be released. One of them is called “75 días y otra,” “Las pesadillas de Alberto Soto.” I also have some voice-over acting jobs, one of them is an animation movie. But if anything, I am now more involved in production and am trying to develop my own projects: a TV series, a feature film and short films.

La reapertura no podía haberse planteado mejor ya que, al margen de toda circunstancia extraordinaria advenida, la nueva reforma estaba programada. Esta decisión de cambio responde al formato de negocio de KE, donde cada cuatro años se lleva cabo alguna renovación. Como explica su alma máter, Antonio Sancho, “creemos que nuestros clientes se lo merecen y siempre nos lo agradecen”. Y este año con más motivos, porque 2020 marca una fecha clave en la historia de este icono de la vida social y gastronómica del Puerto de Sotogrande. En julio se cumplen 30 años de su apertura, completando así tres décadas de historia llenas de perseverancia personal y profesional volcadas sobre un establecimiento que forma parte del crecimiento de la urbanización. Ahora KE nos ha sorprendido con un cambio que nos hace vivir aún más la vida del puerto, mientras desayunamos, almorzamos, cenamos o simplemente tomamos el mejor de los aperitivos. “Hemos integrado mucho más el local en el puerto, ahora incluso estando en el interior, la sensación es de estar en la terraza, en el exterior”, explica Antonio.

The reopening could not have been envisaged better, regardless of the extraordinary circumstances which came about, the new refurbishment had already been planned. The decision to change is in line with the KE business format in which a refurbishment is carried out every four years. As its alma mater, Antonio Sancho explains “we believe that our clients deserve the best and they are always grateful.” This year there are even more reasons because 2020 marks a key date in the history of this social and gastronomic icon in Sotogrande Port. This July, 30 years will have gone by since its opening, therefore completing a history of three decades full of personal and professional perseverance that are part of the growth of the urbanisation. Now KE has surprised us with a change allowing us to enjoy the life of the port all the more while we have breakfast, lunch, dinner or simply enjoy the best appetisers. “We have integrated the premises much more in the port, now even when you are inside, you will feel as if you are on the terrace, outdoors,” Antonio explains.

Que quién ha orquestado esta reforma. No podían ser otra persona que Rocío Moreno, todo un referente de estilo en la decoración de interiores. La familia del Grupo KE volvía así a depositar toda su confianza en Meridiana y su equipo de profesionales, de la zona, y con los que suelen contar en su día a día hace años.

Wondering who has orchestrated this refurbishment? It could not have been anyone other than Rocío Moreno, highly regarded in interior design. The KE Group family have placed all their trust once again in Meridiana and their team of professionals from the area, and those who they have counted on for years on a day-to-day basis.

Poca controversia lleva decir que probablemente KE sea uno de los rincones de Sotogrande por donde más gente pasa al cabo del año. Es apuesta segura. Factores como la calidad, el buen servicio y la ubicación se mantienen tras 30 años de experiencia y siete reformas. “La vuelta a la normalidad va a ser complicada, pero efectivamente abrir con una nueva imagen ayuda a crear más expectación”, reflexionaba Antonio Sancho.

We would not cause much of a stir by saying that KE is one of the places in Sotogrande where more people flock together during the year. It is a safe bet. Factors such as quality, a good service and location have been maintained during 30 years of service and seven refurbishments. “Getting back to normal will be complicated, but effectively opening with a new look helps to create expectation”, Antonio Sancho reflected.

Esa es la idea, que ante circunstancias adversas la esencia siga siendo la misma y si sirve para mostrar la mejor versión, el futuro se ve de otra manera. Según nos comenta Antonio Sancho, una de las claves de KE a lo largo de su historia es que es “un sitio mimado”. Y lo de esta temporada es una renovación a disposición de un fiel concepto de negocio, que ayuda a mantener el concepto de KE vivo.

That is the idea, despite adverse circumstances, the essence is still the same and if it serves the purpose of showing the best version, the future looks different. As Antonio Sancho tells us, one of KE’s keys over the years is that it is “a pampered place”. This season’s refurbishment is faithful to the business concept which helps to keep the KE concept alive.

La niebla nos envuelve y adormece en la ruta hacia un mundo desconocido. Los rumores sobre seres extraordinarios me van guiando a través de caminos que se cruzan y se alejan. Un fondo difuminado acrecienta la sensación de viajar por una especie de túnel del tiempo.

The mist surrounds and numbs us on the route towards an unknown world. The rumours about extraordinary beings guide us through paths that cross and fade away. It is a blurred background giving the sensation that we are travelling through a time warp.

Paisajes sedados; siluetas recortadas en un bosque de tinieblas carente de perspectivas; fantasmas que logran acercar el cielo y la tierra a fuerza de disipar las formas y los volúmenes. Un juego visual que consigue hechizarme en esta misteriosa escenificación de la naturaleza. La niebla del amanecer crea un áurea de romanticismo y ensoñación. Todo parece fundirse hasta destilar una paz expectante en la que imaginación y visión deben convertir en realidad la fantasía que se me presenta en cada momento. La brumosa atmósfera es una especie de invitación a explorar lo que la naturaleza esconde en la lejanía detrás de ese velo fantástico. La niebla confiere a todo lo que me rodea de tintes de irrealidad. Consigue limar asperezas a escenas de vidas marcadas por una lucha constante por la supervivencia. Hasta los colores pierden toda su fuerza y palidecen en una armónica gradación que da protagonismo a los amarillos, ocres y rojizos. Experimentar la naturaleza en lugares aislados y maravillosos, es algo que me ayuda a entender e interiorizar el sorprendente y fascinante planeta en el que nos ha tocado vivir.

Calm scenery; cut out silhouettes in a forest of darkness without perspective; ghosts that bring the sky and the land closer by making the shapes and volumes fade. It is a visual game that manages to spellbind me in this mysterious scene of nature. The mist at dawn creates an aura of romanticism and dreaminess. Everything seems to fuse together until it reveals an expectant peace in the imagination and vision that must turn fantasy into reality in every moment presented to me. The misty atmosphere is a kind of invitation to explore what nature is hiding in the distance behind this fantastic veil. The mist empowers everything that surrounds me with a hint of unreality. It manages to smooth scenes of life over that are marked with a constant struggle for survival. Even the colours lose all their strength and become pale in a harmonious gradation where yellows, ochres and reds are the protagonists. Experiencing nature in wonderful, isolated places is something that helps me to understand and interiorise the surprising and fascinating planet that we live on.

Los personajes que buscamos, al igual que los del resto de las etnias de Nepal, han aprendido a convivir con los duendes de mundos increíbles. Mundos que se muestran entre gasas que suavizan el paisaje y dan protagonismo a los seres que aparecen entre la penumbra que me envuelve. La espesa niebla invita a nuestra intuición e imaginación a comprender las actividades que se representan ante nuestros ojos. Tras aquel gigantesco tronco se esconde una vida aferrada al bosque, un teatro gigante en el que actores visibles e invisibles representan una función que no desean finalizar.

The people who we are looking for, like the rest of the ethnic groups in Nepal, have learnt to live with the spirits of unbelievable worlds. Worlds revealed between fine layers that soften the landscape and give prominence to the beings who appear in the twilight that surround us. The dense fog encourages our intuition and imagination to understand the activities that appear before our eyes. Behind the giant tree trunk there is a way of life hidden clinging to the forest, a giant theatre where the visible and invisible protagonists play roles they do not want to end. It is a lair they do not want to leave for fear of encountering a desert that severs their roots.

Una guarida de la que no quieren salir por temor a encontrarse con un desierto que les arranque de sus raíces.

Perhaps the mist distorts the perception of things that come before us. Maybe it is close to making some dreams become real.

Puede que la niebla distorsione la percepción de las cosas que se me presentan. Puede que esté cerca de conseguir que algunos sueños se conviertan en realidad.

Perhaps the tales of my childhood are not so far-fetched than one would have thought. Maybe the spirits have a home and it is here before my eyes.

Puede que los cuentos de mi infancia no sean tan fantasiosos como uno pudiera pensar. Puede que los duendes tengan un hogar y esté ante mis ojos.

They say that the mist increases the feeling of sadness. However, I feel euphoric, sensing that the spirits of the forest will clear the way through the haze to guide me to the stronghold of my legendary characters.

Dicen que la niebla acrecienta la sensación de tristeza. Sin embargo, me encuentro eufórico, presiento que los espíritus del bosque me disiparán el camino de la bruma para guiarme hasta el reducto de mis personajes de leyenda.

At last, the Raute appear from the darkness to show me their culture which they have managed to hide and keep separated from the globalised world that surrounds us.

Por fin, los Raute aparecen entre las tinieblas para mostrarme una cultura que ha conseguido permanecer oculta y separada de la globalización del mundo que nos rodea.

Dedicado en cuerpo y alma al cortometraje desde los 12 años, este joven director con nombre celestial en un mundo de terror, apenas habiendo traspasado la barrera de los 30 ya ha levantado su primera película. Dedicated in body and soul to short films from the age of 12, this young director who has a heavenly name in a world of horror, is barely in his 30s and has already made his first feature film.

Hoy navega entre España y Estados Unidos manteniendo activa su clara vocación con ambiciosos proyectos –algunos aún por desvelar- y sin descuidar un ápice su trayectoria docente con Estudio V. Justo el día que nos atendía acababa de emitirse el primer tráiler de Voces en TVE. Feliz y contento, el cineasta algecireño Ángel Gómez nos confirmaba el estreno en cines el 24 de julio. Reflexivo y sosegado pero a la vez tremendamente activo en su charla, el director nos transmitía ese espíritu apasionado e insaciable, marcado por una profunda preparación y una implacable tenacidad que hoy lo hacen merecedor de todo lo que ha conseguido y lo que está por venir. ¿Cómo planteaste desde el principio el rodaje de Voces? Siempre me ha movido el cine de terror, misterio, suspense… Es en lo que he estado construyéndome a mí mismo como cineasta a lo largo de toda mi carrera en el mundo del cortometraje. En el momento de hacer mi película este iba a ser el terreno, continuar con la línea que llevaba basada en un cine de terror electrizante, de terror psicológico, con altas de dosis de lo sobrenatural y paranormal. Un terror que buscara provocar en el espectador cierto sobresalto, cierta tensión y angustia. Es ir al máximo de lo que el espectador de este género pretende encontrar en una película así. ¿Cómo ha sido la experiencia con el elenco? Contentísimo, ellos se han volcado al 110 por ciento. Un trabajo actoral, profesional y de compañerismo absoluto. Me han respaldado en todo momento, se han entregado en cada línea de diálogo, en cada pequeña acción que su personaje llevara a cabo, han agarrado a cada uno de los personajes que interpretaban desde el primer momento. La verdad que han sido una entrega y un sacrificio muy grandes. Se han dado unas jornadas agotadoras para ellos y han trabajado a la perfección, manejando muy bien todo el aparato físico y toda la tensión corporal de los personajes. Así como todo lo que tienen que llevar los personajes a nivel emocional, teniendo en cuenta que todo está cimentado en torno a un drama. Y casi al final del rodaje os sorprende la pandemia… Dentro de lo que cabe hemos sido muy afortunados. De repente veía que un día nos cancelaban el rodaje a falta de una jornada y media aproximadamente de terminarlo. Pero lo viví con cierta tranquilidad porque yo, conocedor de la película al completo, sabía que lo que quedaba por rodar era absolutamente prescindible. Eran escenas de aderezo estilístico, de recursos generales y demás que, por supuesto, yo hubiera querido rodar pero que al final el espectador nunca lo va a echar en falta. En nuestra conciencia quedará la cosa de haber rodado ciertos detallitos, que podrían haber enriquecido un poco ciertas partes, pero mínimo.

These days he spends his time travelling between Spain and the United States keeping an active vocation alive with ambitious projects, some yet to be revealed, and without neglecting an ounce his teaching career with Estudio V. The very day he came to see us was when the first trailer of Voces (Voices) was broadcasted on TVE. The filmmaker from Algeciras Ángel Gómez was happy to confirm to us that the release in cinemas will be on 24st July. Thoughtful and calm but at the same time extremely active in his interview, the director instils that passionate and insatiable spirit, marked by a profound preparation and an impeccable tenacity that is worthy of everything he has achieved today and what is still to come. How did you envisage filming Voces from the start? I have always liked horror movies, mystery and thrillers…This is what I have been building up to throughout my career in the world of short films. From the moment of making this film, this was going to be the genre continuing the line based on an electrifying horror film, psychological horror with high doses of the supernatural and paranormal. It is a horror movie that aimed at giving the spectator shocks, a certain tension and anguish. It reaches the peak of what the spectator expects to find in a film like this. How has your experience with the cast been? Really pleased. They have given it 110 percent. Professional acting work and a team spirit at its best. They have supported me at all times, delivered in every line of dialogue, delved into every character that they have interpreted from the first moment. To be honest, there has been great dedication and sacrifice. There have been exhausting days for them and they have worked to perfection, managing all the physical elements very well and the body tension of the characters. As well as everything the characters needed on an emotional level, taking into account that everything is centred on a drama. Almost at the end of filming, the pandemic caught you off guard… Under the circumstances we have been very lucky. All of a sudden one day, filming was cancelled approximately a day and half before finishing. But I was quite calm about it because I was familiar with the film as a whole and I knew that what was left to film was dispensable. They were scenes of additional dressing, general resources and so on. Of course I would have liked to have filmed them but in the end the spectator will not miss them. On our conscience the feeling will linger that certain little details could have enhanced some parts but minimal issues.

¿Cómo valoras la importancia del equipo? En el cine es fundamental. Aquí si quieres ser individualista, tienes por delante una carrera muy breve. Dependes mucho de profesionales que son los que al final van a acabar haciendo tu película, esto es una paradoja pero es así. El director es el que visualiza y gesta todo el aparato final de la película, el que lo define, lo dibuja, lo diseña… Pero el equipo es el que realmente pone la mano de obra y el que tiene que tener una capacidad artística enorme y a su vez una capacidad intelectual y emocional, que les permita entender tus directrices, tus sensaciones, toda la transmisión de emociones que tú vas a querer contar. Y todo eso traducirlo en notas musicales, encuadres, dirección de escenarios, de arte, de luces, fotografías y colores, texturas, interpretaciones, entonaciones en el caso de los actores… En mi caso he tenido la suerte de rodar con una gente muy muy profesional en este proyecto. Después de haber ganado más de 50 premios en todo el mundo con tu corto Behind y en plena adaptación a película en Estados Unidos de la mano de Lionsgate y Sam Raimi. ¿Esperabas esa repercusión? Para nada. Es verdad que hubo algo muy singular y es que era la primera vez que yo ahondaba en el tipo de terror que siempre supe que quería hacer, sobrenatural. Es el cine que básicamente empecé a hacer con 12 años: historias de fantasmas, demonios, casas encantadas… Siempre me ha fascinado el cine de los 70 de parapsicología y de connotaciones sobrenaturales y luego toda la oleada de terror asiático que vino a finales de los 90. Un día me entero de un acontecimiento que me inspira a escribir esta historia, por eso Behind tiene connotaciones con la realidad. Era un corto más, teniendo en cuenta que significaba volcar tu vida en ello. Pero de repente algo ocurre, todo empieza a fluir: selecciones, premios -que yo había ganado ya varios premios y selecciones, pero lo que se vivió con Behind a veces te daba la risa nerviosa. Al final a esto se le da una importancia relativa. Lo importante es que el corto esté seleccionado y se vea en cuantos más festivales mejor, con cuanto más público mejor.

How do you value the importance of teamwork? In the film industry it is fundamental. If you want to be an individualist, you will have a short career. You depend greatly on professionals who ultimately make the film for you. It is a paradox, but that is how it is. The director is who visualises and manages all the final output of the film, who defines, draws, designs it...But the team are the ones working hands on and have to have an enormous artistic capability as well as intellectual and emotional capability, able to understand your direction, your feelings, and all those feelings you want to transmit. All of this is translated into musical notes, frames, scene direction, art, lights, photography and colours, textures, interpretations, intonations in the case of the actors...In my case I have been lucky to film with extremely professional people in this project. After winning more than 50 awards all over the world with your short film Behind and a full adaption to film in the United States through Lionsgate and Sam Raimi. Did you expect such a repercussion? Not at all. There was something very unique about it and it was the first time I delved into the type of horror that I have always wanted to make, supernatural. It is basically the film making that I started to make when I was 12: stories of ghosts, demons, haunted houses...I have always been fascinated by the cinema of the 70’s – parapsychology and the supernatural connotations, and later the wave of Asian horror which came at the end of the 90’s. One day I found out about an event that inspired me to write this story. That is why Behind has connotations of reality. It was just another short film, which meant throwing your life into it. But suddenly something happens, everything starts to flow, selections, prizes, I had already won various awards and selections, but what was experienced with Behind sometimes gave me a nervous laugh. In the end you have to give it a relative importance. The important thing is that the short film is selected and it is watched in as many festivals as possible, the greater the audience the better.

¿Imaginaste en algún momento que tu carrera iba a ser así? Una cosa es lo que yo soñaba de niño y otra es la realidad que se puede conseguir. Además de lo que se está consiguiendo, hay muchas cosas con las que me muerdo la lengua por no contar y que estoy deseando desvelar porque son inmensas y me emocionan enormemente. Entonces poniendo todo esto sobre la mesa, uno lo mira y dice: no me lo esperaba que pasara con 30-32 años. Yo esperaba que me iba a costar años y años el poder levantar una película. Te puedo decir que lo esperaba y que no a partes iguales. Pensaba acabar algún día haciendo cine independiente en España y todo esto que está pasando me parece que es precioso. Estoy muy emocionado. Con una agenda así, ¿cómo se mantiene el contacto con la tierra natal? Mi relación con Algeciras es muy estrecha, toda mi familia está allí y no pasan dos meses sin que baje a la tierra, porque a mí me tira muchísimo. De hecho, uno de mis planes utópicos en un futuro no muy lejano es vivir en Algeciras y moverme para según qué cosas. Pero uno de mis planes es estar allí, que estoy muy tranquilo, muy feliz, que tengo a la gente que quiero, que tengo a mis allegados, a mi familia… Se vive muy cómodo, la verdad. ¿Qué no debe faltar en una buena película de terror? No deben faltar los buenos personajes. Pudiera parecer que lo más importante es el resorte, el mecanismo, la traca de feria, el efecto…y para mí no. Creo que sin la parte humana y la parte emocional, el truco se queda desprovisto de cualquier efecto o de cualquier resultado. Y de esto hemos visto tropecientas películas, que recurren al efecto pero no cargan las cintas desde la base emocional de los personajes. Esto es algo que yo siempre pretendo trabajar en profundidad con mis personajes, darles matices, características, elementos empáticos que hagan que al final el público pueda llegar a vincularse con esa situación, subirse a la historia, para que cuando empiece la montaña rusa de horror si realmente estos personajes me importan, me va a importar lo que les ocurra.

Did you imagine that one day your career would be like this? It is one thing to have dreamt it as a child and the other is the reality which can be achieved. In addition to what I am achieving, there are so many things that I am biting my tongue about and I am dying to reveal because they are huge and I get very excited about them. Taking all of this into consideration, one looks and says: I did not expect this to happen at the age of 30-32. I expected to take years and years to be able to make a film. I can safely say that I equally expected it as I did not. I thought that one day I would end up making independent films in Spain and everything that is happening is wonderful. I am very excited. With a schedule like that, how to stay in touch with your homeland? My relationship with Algeciras is very strong, all my family are there and two months do not go by without me going back because it attracts me very much. In fact, one of my utopian plans not so far in the future is to live in Algeciras and to travel when it is necessary. But one of my plans is to be there, as I am very calm, very happy, I have the people I love there, my dear ones, my family...You live comfortably, to be honest. What shouldn’t there be missing from a good horror film? Good characters shouldn’t be missing. It would seem that the most important things are the resources, the mechanisms, the fireworks, the effects...for me it is not the case. I think that without the human part and the emotional part, the tricks are devoid of any effect or any result. I have seen zillions of films, which depend on effects but they do not charge the film with the emotional base of the characters. It is always something I try to work on profoundly with the characters, give them hints, characteristics, emphatic elements which in the end the audience can connect with the situations, get into the story so that when the rollercoaster of horror begins, if the characters mean something to me, I will be concerned about what happens to them.

Fotos: Simón Picazo ¿A qué tiene miedo Ángel Gómez? En la punta de la lanza está el miedo a la pérdida de los seres queridos, creo que eso nos aterra a todos y condiciona muchísimo. Más allá de eso es verdad que he sentido una cierta liberación. Yo soy una persona bastante intensa, tengo una energía que a veces me desborda a mí mismo. Pero todo eso era fruto de una necesidad y ansia de llegar a cumplir lo que es el sueño de una vida, que en mi caso es un sueño absoluto y rotundo desde que tengo juicio. Antes de rodar Voces mi miedo era no ser capaz de lograr algo así en mi vida y esto me atormentaba profundamente. Toda mi vida giraba en torno a esto. Yo vivo por y para el cine, por y para hacer cine. Pero es verdad que de repente hay algo dentro de mí que ya respira y dice: ya lo has hecho, ya ese miedo no existe. Pero esa vocecilla que siempre tenemos todos cuando nos metemos en algo muy arriesgado estaba ahí y era un miedo que me movía mucho y ahora ha desaparecido. Ahora hay otro tipo de inquietudes pero no van más allá de una ambición de seguir creciendo.

What is Ángel Gómez afraid of ? At the forefront is the fear of losing loved ones, I think that this terrifies everyone and affects us greatly. Beyond that it is true that I feel a certain sense of liberation. I am quite an intense person and I have an energy that sometimes overwhelms even me. But this is a necessity and desire to achieve what is a dream in life, which in my case is an absolute dream as far back as I can remember. Before filming Voces my fear was not being able to achieve something like that in my life and that tormented me profoundly. All my life, it revolved around this. I live for film, and to make films. But it is true that something inside me breathes and says: you have done it, fear does not exist. That little voice, which all of us have when we get into something very risky, is there and it was a fear that made me move a lot and now it has gone away. Now there are other concerns but it does not go beyond that of an ambition to continue growing.

There is no doubt that polo and golf are signature sports in Sotogrande. Four out of the nine golf courses scattered around the borough of San Roque are located within the urbanisation. The flagships are Real Sotogrande Golf Club, the mythical, first course and Real Valderrama Golf Club, the best course on Continental Europe since 1988 and which hosted the historical 32nd edition of the Ryder Cup in 1997. This turned it into the first club on Continental Europe to achieve this milestone. After came the Volvo Masters and the Andalusia Valderrama Masters, making it the Mecca of Golf. On top of these other courses of unquestionable standing were added namely La Reserva and Almenara. Since the beginning of Sotogrande the introduction and growth of polo came naturally with the construction of the mythical beach polo ground in the 1960s. However, we cannot deny that if there is a season to look forward to in Sotogrande with particular enthusiasm, that has to be summer. It is a season in which the population triples, favouring much desired reencounters at its beaches, beach clubs (El Octógono or Trocadero, formerly Cucurucho), the terraces at the Port or Marina, sports clubs, long awaited reunions at villas or even on the open sea, spending an unforgettable day with the backdrop of the Strait of Gibraltar and the Continent of Africa. This perhaps could be one of the most peculiar summer seasons of all, although no less exciting. The summer of 2020 comes under a precedent never experienced before and for those who are cautious and have a sense of responsibility, this will combine with the idiosyncrasy of an urbanisation that is tremendously brilliant in every sense. In the summer of 2020 we shall see each other again, play golf, padel, tennis, ride a horse, enjoy nautical sports, unforgettable evenings of polo or see the sunset on the open sea. In summer stay healthy as much as possible

Por fin llega el verano, las ansiadas vacaciones, nos hemos estado preparando y cuidando a conciencia, y de un día para otro nos relajamos de tal forma que se nos olvida todo aquello que habíamos puesto en marcha meses atrás para llevar una vida saludable. Pues debo deciros una cosa, en verano toca cuidarse ¡y más que nunca! El calor, la pérdida de rutinas, la disminución de estrés mental…todo ello contribuye a que dejemos aparcados nuestros hábitos, pero voy a daros algunos consejos para que en verano sea más fácil cuidarnos y mantener una alimentación saludable. 1. CINCO COMIDAS AL DÍA: abusar de comidas copiosas y dejar mucho tiempo entre una comida y otra no van a ayudar a nuestro metabolismo para poder mantenernos saludables, ya que esto favorece la reserva de energía en forma de grasa. Debemos priorizar un esquema de al menos 5 comidas al día: Desayuno, media mañana, comida, merienda y cena. 2. ELIGE FRUTAS Y VERDURAS FRESCAS Y EN CRUDO: su contenido en agua va a mejorar nuestra hidratación, además de aportarnos vitaminas, minerales y fibra ayudando a nuestro organismo en funciones reguladores fundamentales. 3. MÉTODO DEL PLATO: somos un país donde culturalmente defendemos los tradicionales “picoteo”, primer plato, segundo plato y postre, pero está demostrado que en un único plato podemos incluir todos los nutrientes que necesitamos en cada comida. El plato ideal debe estar compuesto: 50% hortalizas y frutas, 25% proteína magra (baja en grasa) y 25% hidratos de carbono priorizando siempre las formas integrales (pasta integral, arroz integral, pan integral…). 4. CONTROLA LAS RACIONES: si no seguimos un esquema de al menos 5 comidas al día, lo más probable es que lleguemos con demasiada hambre a las comidas principales; esto hará que nuestra

At last summer is here, the long awaited holidays which we have been getting ready for, and from one day to the next we begin to forget about everything we had started months before to have a healthy life. But I must tell you that in summer you need to look after yourself, now more than ever! The heat, the lack of routine, the reduction in mental stress, all of these things mean that we leave our habits aside, but I am going to give you some advice to make it easier to look after yourself and maintain a healthy diet in summer. 1. FIVE MEALS A DAY: overindulging with big meals and leaving a long period of time between each one is not going to help our metabolism stay healthy as this causes the storage of energy as fat. We should make sure that we have at least 5 meals a day: breakfast, mid-morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack and dinner. 2. CHOOSE FRUIT AND FRESH VEGETABLES AND EAT THEM RAW: their water content improves hydration, as well as supplying us with vitamins, minerals and fibre helping our organism to regulate itself properly. 3. DISH METHOD: we are a country that is proud culturally of the traditional starter, first course, second course and dessert, but it has been shown that one dish could include all the necessary nutrients we need for each meal. The ideal dish would comprise of: 50% vegetables and fruit, 25% lean protein (low in fat) and 25% of carbohydrates, always prioritising wholegrain varieties (wholegrain pasta, rice and bread).

4. CONTROL PORTIONS: if we do not follow a regime of at least 5 meals a day, we will most likely get to our main meals feeling very hungry; meaning that we will digest more than our organism needs and resulting in gaining more kilos when we go back home.

KE nutrición | En verano toca cuidarse ingesta sea más elevada de lo que nuestro organismo necesita y el resultado pueden ser los kilos de más que nos acompañarán en nuestro regreso a casa. Si conseguimos además comer despacio, la señal de saciedad llegará a nuestro cerebro 20 minutos después de haber empezado a comer, y de esta forma podremos alimentarnos solo de lo que realmente necesitamos. ¡La ansiedad y las vacaciones no son buenas compañera! 5. COCINADO: las formas de cocinar los alimentos que debemos priorizar son horno, vapor, hervido y plancha que favorecerán nuestra digestión. En verano muchos alimentos podemos consumirlos en crudo quizás con mejor predisposición que en otras épocas del año; optar por ensaladas y sopas frías son sin duda una opción muy saludable e interesante desde el punto de vista nutricional. 6. MEJORES FUENTES DE PROTEÍNA: idealmente consumiremos pescados, huevos, carnes de ave, cortes magros de carne y legumbres como fuentes principales de proteínas. Las legumbres son una opción muy olvidada en verano, pero debemos recordar que en frío y con un buen aliño pueden ser una base enriquecedora de ensaladas y acompañamientos. 7. EL POSTRE SE NOS ANTOJA: en verano, con el calor, somos más vulnerables al sabroso “helado”; existen formas saludables de hacer helados caseros como son las paletas de frutas a base de fruta y agua congelada. Además, la fruta fresca en forma de macedonias naturales e incluso acompañadas de yogur son una alternativa muy saludable para evitar la tentación de los helados tradicionales. 8. EVITA LOS FRITOS DEL CHIRINGUITO: vacaciones es sinónimo en muchos casos de comer fuera de casa más de lo que hacemos habitualmente; afortunadamente esto no significa que no podamos mantener nuestros buenos hábitos, ya que SIEMPRE podemos optar por alternativas saludables en los restaurantes de comida mediterránea. ¡No abuses de los caprichos! 9. MANTÉN UNA BUENA HIDRATACIÓN: en verano más que nunca debemos estar muy pendientes de aportar agua a nuestro cuerpo, ya que las pérdidas se aumentan debido a las altas temperaturas y la humedad propias del verano. Hay que garantizar de forma general un consumo de al menos 2L de agua al día; esto podemos conseguirlo bebiendo agua mineral, infusiones frías no azucaradas, sopas frías con bajo contenido en sal… Sobre todo, y muy importante, no esperes a tener sed pues ese momento indica que nuestro cuerpo ya tiene un grado de hidratación importante; adelántate a ello, y mantén un ritmo constante de hidratación en tu día a día.

Anxiety and holidays are not good companions! 5. COOKING: the methods of cooking food should ideally be baking, steaming, boiling and grilling that favour digestion. In summer a lot of food can be eaten raw as opposed to other seasons in the year; without a doubt opting for salads and cold soups is a very healthy and interesting option from a nutritional point of view. 6. BEST SOURCES OF PROTEIN: ideally consume fish, eggs, poultry, lean cuts and legumes as main sources of protein. Legumes are often overlooked in summer, but eaten cold accompanied by a good dressing they can be a delicious way to accompany salads and side dishes. 7. THE DESSERT WE FANCY: in summer, with the heat, we are more tempted to delicious ice cream, but there are healthy ways to make home-made ones like ice lollies made of fruit and frozen water. Also, fresh fruit in natural fruit salads or with yoghurt is an alternative to avoid the temptation of traditional ice creams. 8. AVOID FRIED FOOD AT BEACH BARS: a holiday is a synonym in many cases of eating out more than usual; fortunately that does not mean we cannot maintain our good habits as we can ALWAYS opt for healthy alternatives at Mediterranean cuisine restaurants. Do not overindulge in treats! 9. STAY WELL HYDRATED: in summer more than anything we should be very aware of hydrating our bodies with water as we lose a lot when there are high temperatures and with the humidity of summer. As a general rule you should drink at least 2 litres of water a day; we do can do this by drinking mineral water, cold infusions without sugar, cold soup with a low salt content and above all, most importantly, do not wait to get thirsty as this is an indication that your body is already dehydrated so be a step ahead maintaining a constant hydration on a daily basis. 10. MOVE ABOUT!: physical exercise is part of our day-to-day lives, to a lesser or greater degree, everything counts! Remember something really important: “do not start a diet you know will end some day, change your lifestyle to one that will always be with you (yes, even in summer and on holiday!).”

La razón de existir de Nuevo Hogar Betania viene de la mano del activismo social de su fundadora y directora, la linense Begoña Arana. Entidad social y personalidad inherentes que revelan con su trayectoria, la creencia en una estructura social que permita dar cabida tanto a la actuación como a la prevención en el marco de los colectivos en riesgo de exclusión social.

Nuevo Hogar Betania reason for being comes hand in hand with founder and director from La Linea Begoña Arana’s social activism. This social organisation and inherent personality which are revealed by their development, the belief in a social structure that has room both for intervention as well as prevention in the structure of groups of people who are at risk of social exclusion.

En 2012, con tan solo 26 años, Begoña consiguió levantar de las cenizas un centro que entonces estaba estructuralmente abandonado. Después de un arduo trabajo de campo y sin ningún tipo de respaldo económico, decidió presentar su proyecto al Ayuntamiento. Para ella, el detonante fue una llave y un período de carencia de un año. Sin dudarlo ni un segundo, se enfrascó en el cometido de presentar proyectos nacionales e internacionales para conseguir fondos económicos. Y un día empezaron a venir de vuelta, lo cual unido a sus ganas y su transparencia en la gestión desde el principio hizo fluir una colaboración en cadena, donde todo el trabajo ha sido voluntario.

In 2012, at the age of just 26, Begoña managed to lay the foundations of a centre which was at the time structurally derelict. After some arduous field work and without any economic help, she decided to present this project to the Borough Council. For her, this was the determining factor, the key in a period of a year. Without doubting it for a second, she engaged in presenting projects on a national and international scale in order to receive economic help. And then one day this paid off, combined with her willingness and transparency in management from the beginning, made it possible for collaborations to occur one after another where all the work has been voluntary.

La directora de Nuevo Hogar Betania nos contaba que en tres años consiguieron toda la finca -4.000 metros cuadrados-. Era el momento de convertir en actuaciones su idea original, que era la promoción y el desarrollo del ser humano.

The director of the Nuevo Hogar Betania has told us that within three years they had got hold of the whole plot of land, 4,000 square metres. It was the moment to turn her original idea into actions which was to promote and develop human beings.

Actualmente, la entidad tiene 30 proyectos en marcha, dedicados a la promoción de menores desfavorecidos en situación de vulnerabilidad, mujeres, inmigrantes, población mixta, exreclusos y reclusos. Su actuación e implicación con los sectores más desfavorecidos les ha hecho convertirse en recursos acreditados del Ministerio de Igualdad y de Protección Internacional de mujeres y menores víctimas de trata de seres humanos por explotación sexual. Nuevo Hogar Betania es un referente nacional en el área de la mujer y de personas sin hogar; así como en el ámbito de acciones de innovación, generadas mediante una metodología propia, aplicada a las personas con las que trabaja para obtener el resultado, que es la normalización de sus vidas.

Currently the organisation has 30 projects in motion, dedicated to the promotion of underprivileged minors in a situation of vulnerability, women, immigrants, multi-racial population, former inmates and inmates. Their work and commitment among the underprivileged sectors, have meant that they have been recognised by the Ministry of Equality and the International Protection of Women and Minors victims of sexual exploitation. The Nuevo Hogar Betania is a national reference in the field of women and homeless people; as well as in the sphere of innovative actions, generated by their own methodology, applied to people who they are working with in order to normalise their lives which is the required result.

KE solidaridad | Begoña Arana Pero la realidad está ahí, latente ahora más que nunca. De tener una población diaria de 320 personas, la entidad ha pasado a tener 950, según nos explicaba Begoña. Son cifras que responden a todos los servicios de los que disponen, tanto residenciales como ambulatorios. Nuevo Hogar Betania ha sido el único recurso de comedor social adherido a la Red de Garantía Alimentaria de la provincia de Cádiz que no ha parado de funcionar durante todo el estado de alarma. Y desde ese primer fin de semana, nos explicaba la directora, todo lo producido ha sido sin financiación pública, generando entre el 14 y el 16 de marzo, 96 plazas residenciales nuevas. Además, se ha venido ofreciendo el servicio de catering a mayores de 65 años que vivían solos y más familias, debido a la crisis del covid-19 y sin ser el perfil, se han sumado al comedor social. “El impacto ha sido brutal, además va a ir empeorando y obligatoriamente nosotros necesitamos financiación privada y pública, sobre todo”, explicaba Begoña.

The founder of this organisation from La Linea believes the need to drive the motivation of the people who want a change, who need help in a given moment to achieve their wellbeing within their limits.

Por ello, Nuevo Hogar Betania se basa en un sistema profesionalizado, no asistencialista. “Porque entonces no te estoy ayudando ni estoy cooperando en tu vida. Yo te refuerzo y paralelamente te tengo que ir asesorando para que tú tengas herramientas propias para poder generar tus propios recursos”, aclaraba la directora.

That is why Nuevo Hogar Betania is based on a professionalised not a care aid one. “Because in that case I am not helping you nor I am cooperating in your life. I back you up and at the same time I have to advise you so that you have the right tools to be able to generate your own resources,” the director explained.

Los resultados están al alcance de todos, es una realidad. Y por ello la entidad viene siendo reconocida como referente en el ámbito social. Pero sin duda, uno de esos reconocimientos que mayor impacto ha causado ha sido el Premio Social Princesa de Girona en 2019, otorgado a Begoña Arana por su trayectoria profesional. Según nos contaba ella misma, la experiencia vivida ha sido fascinante, enriquecedora y muy positiva. A lo que se suma la notable repercusión que ha causado tanto en su vida como en la entidad. “El giro para mí ha sido brutal, con posibilidades de participar en universidades, como lo estoy haciendo, dando seminarios virtuales, haciendo coaching, conferencias, oportunidades de trabajo… Y para la entidad, visibilidad, reconocimiento, valor…”, reconocía Begoña.

The results are there for everybody to see, a reality. That is why the organisation is being recognised as a reference in the social sphere. But without a doubt, one of those recognitions that has caused the highest impact has been the Princess of Girona Social Prize in 2019, awarded to Begoña Arana for her professional career. As she has stated herself, her experience has been fascinating, enriching and very positive. Added to this is the significant repercussion in her life as well as for the organisation. “The change for me has been amazing, with the possibility in participating at universities as I am doing, giving online seminars, doing coaching, conferences, work opportunities...And for the organisation, visibility, recognition, values....” Begoña acknowledged.

Nuevo Hogar Betania tiene actualmente sede en La Línea, Algeciras y Málaga. Pero la intención de su fundadora es seguir avanzando e instalarse entre País Vasco y Barcelona, ya que para la población de riesgo que viene de África y hace aquí su primera parada, tiene una segunda en esos puntos del norte, lo cual les ayudaría a medir el paso y las condiciones de estancia hacia otro país de Europa. Y a nivel personal, las pretensiones de Begoña siguen escalando, “quiero estar en cooperación internacional, porque creo que los orígenes hay que potenciarlos, estoy segura de que todos no quieren venir a Europa”. La carrera de esta linense no tiene techo y con ella, el futuro de Nuevo Hogar Betania promete seguir perseverando en el empoderamiento de las personas, proyectando y potenciando otras opciones, trabajando en la actuación y en la prevención a partes iguales.

Nuevo Hogar Betania has centres in La Linea, Algeciras and Malaga, but the intention of its founder is to continue developing and establishing centres between the Basque Country and Barcelona as people at risk who come from Africa make their first stop here and then head up to different places in the north. Therefore it would help them to have a steppingstone and have living conditions in order to get to another country in Europe. On a personal level, the intentions of Begoña continue to be more ambitious, “I would like to be in international charity organisations because I think we have to develop their places of origin, I am sure not everyone wants to come to Europe”. The career of this person from La Linea has no limits and with her, the future of Nuevo Hogar Betania promises to continue to persevere, empowering people, projecting and boosting other options, working on action and prevention on equal terms.

KE Práctico | Carlos Duclós

Carlos Duclós La habilidad de Carlos Duclós consiste en hacer doblete. De esas circunstancias que salen de manera natural porque a su afición, se añade el desempeño diario de una profesión altamente técnica. Con su cámara colgada al cuello, este práctico del Puerto de Algeciras da rienda suelta a la pasión que siente por la fotografía desde siempre y nos permite estampas insólitas de la Bahía de Algeciras y de un puerto visto desde las entrañas. Carlos es sevillano, pero tras treinta años de profesión primero como marino mercante, después como capitán y en los últimos diez años como práctico en el Puerto de Algeciras, se siente adoptado por esta tierra. “Ser práctico tiene unos momentos muy duros, pero tiene otros que compensan mucho y más en este puerto. Aquí puedes hacer maniobras con barcos de todas las nacionalidades, los más grandes del mundo”, nos explicaba Carlos, que a su vez valoraba el privilegio que le supone seguir en la punta de su profesión y poder dormir en casa. Trabajar como práctico en el primer puerto del Mediterráneo “acelera mucho la experiencia”, reconocía Duclós, en lo que se refiere a llevar a la praxis todos los conocimientos técnicos en un entorno en el que tan solo el año pasado, según datos de la Autoridad Portuaria, se registraron 29.077 entradas de barcos. Lo que supone 80 barcos diarios. Y en este “gigante que nunca duerme”, como lo calificaba Carlos, están los prácticos para controlar, gestionar y coordinar todas esas entradas y salidas.

The ability of Carlos Duclós consists of playing two roles. Due to circumstance they come naturally because on top of his hobby, his everyday job is highly technical. With his camera hung on his neck, this maritime pilot from the Port of Algeciras has always let his passion for photography loose and giving us unique pictures of the Bay of Gibraltar and the port seen from its core. Carlos is from Seville, but after a 30-year career, first as a merchant seaman and later as captain and the last ten years as a maritime pilot at the Port of Algeciras, he feels at home in this land. “As a maritime pilot there have been some very difficult moments, but it has been worth it on other occasions and more so in this port. Here you can do manoeuvres with vessels from different countries, the biggest ones in the world,” Carlos explains. At the same time, he values the privilege of being at the forefront of his profession and being able to sleep at home. Working as a maritime pilot in the main port in the Mediterranean “accelerates your experience much more,” Duclós acknowledges. He is referring to putting into practice all the technical knowledge in surroundings that, according to the Port Authority, the entrance of 29,077 vessels ware registered only last year. This means 80 vessels every day. And here “the giant never sleeps,” as Carlos calls it, maritime pilots are there to control, manage, and coordinate all the incoming and outgoing vessels.

Llegar a ser práctico no es tarea fácil. Una intensa carrera a base de experiencia y oposiciones donde tienes que demostrar ser el mejor y especializarte en el puerto donde se vaya a desarrollar tu actividad. Ese largo e importantísimo esfuerzo después tiene su recompensa, reconoce Carlos. “Nosotros lo que vendemos son conocimientos teóricos del puerto”, empezaba para explicarnos las funciones de los prácticos. Que dicho así parece sencillo. Carlos, al igual que sus compañeros, cada vez que llega un barco a la bahía son los responsables de llegar hasta él –merced a los caprichos de la meteorología- subir y en cuestión de cinco o diez minutos, conseguir que confíen en él.

Becoming a maritime pilot is not an easy job. It is an intense career based on experience and public exams where you have to demonstrate you are the best and specialising in the port where you carry out your work. This is a long process that takes a lot of effort but eventually it brings its reward, Carlos acknowledges. “What we sell is our technical knowledge of the port,” and then he started to explain all the duties of a maritime pilot. It seemed like easy work explained that way. Carlos and his colleagues alike, have to get to a vessel every time one arrives in the bay and are at the mercy of the weather, then go onboard and within five or ten minutes make them trust you.

“Es una lucha técnica y psicológica, son unos momentos muy delicados y con muchísima responsabilidad. Entras en un barco y tienes que hacer a la tripulación tu equipo rápidamente, que vean que eres una persona que sabe lo que hace. Por eso demostrarles tus conocimientos, tu seguridad y tu templanza en los primeros momentos es muy importante”, nos explicaba Carlos. Y “el subidón”, como él lo define, viene cuando ya ha conseguido atracar un barco de los más grandes, todo ha salido bien y el capitán se lo agradece.

Esta decisión hizo que cada práctico, además de su trabajo habitual, se hiciera responsable de un departamento determinado, que en el caso de Duclós es el de calidad y medio ambiente. La eficiencia en este sentido ha sido tal que actualmente son totalmente autosuficientes a nivel energético y de recursos y para garantizarlo, este mismo año han estrenado sede en un edificio nuevo e independiente.

KE paisajista | Jesús Gómez Después de 30 años dedicados al diseño, muchas veces nos han preguntado si es la escala, el tamaño, lo más importante a la hora de valorar un jardín. Sobre este asunto, lo tengo claro… lo que importa no es el tamaño, sino la INTENCIÓN que ponemos en ello. La intención es lo que marca el interés de un espacio, la capacidad que tenemos para sacar el máximo partido. Eso, aparte del buen gusto, que creo que existe, el saber conectar el jardín con la construcción y que exista un diálogo coherente. El conocer la historia de ese arte, para dar con la intervención apropiada o para saber mezclar bien elementos distintos es, entre otros aspectos, lo que hace que un jardín hable. Y cuando digo hable, es que despierte nuestro interés cuando por primera vez lo visitamos. A todos nos habrá pasado que, al llegar a un lugar, podemos notar que ha habido una intención, un alma creadora que se ha preocupado en pensarlo y en canalizar el esfuerzo y la energía para desarrollarlo. Nos puede gustar o no, pero sentimos que hay un amor, una pasión, que ha habido una preocupación por dicho espacio y que las cosas no se hicieron de cualquier modo. Por eso, para mí, no importa tanto el espacio como la intención. La misión última de un jardín es volverte a tu “yo” de fondo, conectarte con lo que en verdad tú eres. Y eso, hay personas que lo consigue con una simple y bella agrupación de distintas macetas sobre una vieja mesa, o con un montón de troncos gastados y erosionados de la playa, agrupados en orden perfectamente imperfectos y rematados con tres piedras.

After 30 years dedicated to design, many times we have been asked if the scale and size are the most important elements when it comes to valuing a garden. About this issue, it is clear to me. The most important is not the size but the INTENTION that you put in it. The intention is what marks the space and the ability to make the most of it. Apart from the good taste, which I think exists, the knowledge of how to connect the garden to the building and there being a coherent dialogue. Knowing the history of that art to do the appropriate job and how to blend the different elements well, among other elements, is what makes the garden speak to you. When I mean talk, that is to say it awakens your interest when you visit it for the first time. It must have happened to us all that when we have got to a place, there has been an intention, a creative soul who has taken the trouble to think and channel their effort and energy into developing the garden. We may or may not like it, but we feel that there is love, passion and concern for the space where things were not done any old way. That is why, for me, the space is not as important as the intention. The final aim of a garden is to take you back to your background “self”, connect with who you are. There are people who achieve this with a simple and beautiful collection of different potted plants on

KE paisajista | Jesús Gómez La belleza no depende del espacio, sino de que la actuación sea la adecuada, la correcta, para que te haga transcender y disfrutar en estado de contemplación. Esto se consigue con un jardín, una música, una buena pintura, … Cuando nos pidieron colaboración para el jardín de esta vivienda, unas modernas casas adosadas, con dos jardines distribuidos en distintos niveles y una terraza en planta alta, observamos la arquitectura de líneas contemporáneas. No había mucho espacio, teníamos vistas a una bella finca de aguacates, a las montañas y al paisaje de fondo. Todos estos elementos eran importantes a tener en cuanta. Y ahí comenzamos a “rumiar” sobre en qué debería consistir nuestra intervención. Para el pasillo acceso peatonal utilizamos nuestras macetas, que pintamos en gris claro, al igual que el muro de entrada a la vivienda y utilizamos Nerium oleander (adelfas) de floración blanca, consiguiendo una pantalla que tapaba la pared del garaje y hacía más entrañable y menos dura la bienvenida a esta casa. Desde el salón principal se contemplan las vistas al valle con plantación de frutales y a las montañas de alrededor. Prescindimos del seto inicial que ocultaba absurdamente las vistas y usamos Nasella tenuissima “Pony tails”, con el fin de darle un aspecto más similar al del paisaje cercano, donde abundan gramíneas en estado asalvajado en los claros y bajo la arboleda, para así no ocultar y hacer crecer la sensación de amplitud de este “small garden”. Praderas de césped bermudas y setos de bambúes en los laterales, con el fin de generar mayor privacidad de las casas vecinas. Mobiliario moderno, en consonancia con la arquitectura, elegidos por la propietaria.

When they asked us to collaborate with the garden of this property, modern semi-detached houses with two gardens distributed on different levels and a terrace on the upper level, we can observe the architecture of contemporary lines. There was not much space but we have views of beautiful plantation of avocados, mountains and scenery in the background. All these elements were important to take into account. From there we started to ponder on what we needed to do here. For the pedestrian access passageway, we used plant pots which we painted light grey, the same as the entrance wall to the property and used Nerium oleander with white flowers, creating a display that covers the garage wall and making it more charming and welcoming to the house. From the living room you can enjoy the views of the valley with fruit plantations and the mountains in the background. We removed the hedge which was absurdly hiding the views and used Mexican feather grass Nasella tenuissima to give it a more similar look to the surrounding scenery where wild grasses are abundant in clearings and under the trees. In this way not concealing anything and giving this small garden the impression of space. Meadows with Bermuda

KE paisajista | Jesús Gómez Para el jardín lateral, que limita por un lado con la alta pared del vecino (son 3 plantas) y por otro con la casa de nuestra clienta, teníamos que pensar en un árbol que: 1. Tuviera una cierta tolerancia a la sombra, debido a la cercanía a edificaciones. 2. Tuviera un crecimiento columnar. 3. Creciera rápido, para ocultar el horror de una pared tan alta. 4. Pudiéramos crear, en tan poco espacio, un efecto de bosque con aire zen, que confiriera a este espacio un mayor encanto, con lo cual no debían tener amplias copas. Siempre he tenido la opinión de que la arquitectura occidental moderna, conecta y encaja bien con los jardines zen japoneses. Y es que, la esencia es la misma. La correcta y perfecta elección y distribución de pocos elementos no era cuestión de muchas mezclas. El mismo árbol repetido, Pyrus chanticleer, plantado sobre pequeños montículos que creamos con tierra para darle mayor movimiento al jardín. Estas montañas de tierra las cubrimos con Ophiopogum japonicum y Bulbine frutescens. Además, esta especie produce una bella floración en blanco en la temprana primavera, que se disfruta desde los dormitorios de la segunda planta y cocina y que bien recuerda a la famosa floración de prunus en Japón. Para hacer más disfrutable este mini bosque sagrado, colocamos, a modo de los jardines orientales, piedras como grandes lozas, que permiten el recorrido por este mini jardín y que fueron talladas a mano, como si de un Haiku (poema japonés) se tratara. En este caso, elegimos nuestro poema favorito de Santa Teresa de Jesús: “Nada te turbe, nada te espante, todo se pasa, Dios no se muda. La paciencia, todo lo alcanza. A quien a Dios tiene, nada le falta, sólo Dios basta”.

KE paisajista | Jesús Gómez De manera que si giramos y paseamos rodeando este pequeño bosquecillo, éste se puede convertir en un rato de meditación y como un sanador mantra, si repetimos el giro. En el acceso al sótano, donde se crearon jardineras de madera para contener el desnivel existente, plantamos Lyriope muscari, que, junto con Ophiopogum, que usamos para el minibosque, son de origen japonés, con el fin de acentuar ese aire oriental que buscábamos, además de que ambos soportan bastante bien los espacios sombríos. En la zona superior, saliendo del garaje, hay un pequeño jardín en forma de “cul de sac”, donde plantamos Phyllostachys sulfúrea. Con el fin de darle una cierta profundidad y aislarnos del exterior, aprovechamos unas antiguas esculturas de tigres en piedra para ubicarlos en esta zona y acentuar ese aire exótico. En la terraza de arriba se creó un porche con bancada y una discreta pileta, donde poder disfrutar de las tardes y de los bellos atardeceres. Gracias a una pequeña piscina con bellas vistas, esta zona se hizo más deseable y disfrutable. Para este espacio elegimos unas macetas vidriadas en blanco y usamos plantas crasas, que son de color suavemente glauco y resistentes al sol persistente. Junto a la piscina, un macetón blanco también con Fulcraea selloa, en un guiño a los cuadros de David Hockney, pintor del cual es gran admiradora la propietaria de esta casa, gran amante del arte.

From the entrance to the basement, where gardens of wood were created to compensate for the slope, we planted Liriope muscari together with Ophiopogon of Japanese origin, which we used for the small woodland and to accentuate the oriental feel we were looking for as well as being able to withstand spaces with little light. In the upper area, as you go out the garage, there is a small garden in the shape of a cul-de-sac, where we planted Phyllostachys sulphurea. This gives a certain depth and distances us from the exterior. We used some old stone sculptures of tigers and placed them in this area to enhance that exotic feel. On the terrace above, we created a porch with a bench and a discrete pool where you can enjoy the afternoons and beautiful sunsets. Thanks to this small pool with beautiful views, this area became more desirable and enjoyable. For this space we choose white glass plant pots and used succulent plants which are of a light glaucous colour and are resistant to long sunny periods. Next to the pool is a large white plant pot also with Furcraea selloa, a gesture to paintings by David Hockney, a painter who is greatly admired by the home owner, an art lover.

Basado en los mecánicos, Austin A90 Atlantic, fue desarrollado por Donald Healey en 1956, para ser producido internamente por su pequeña compañía de automóviles Healey en Warwick. Healey construyó un solo Healey Hundred para el Salón del Automóvil de Londres de 1952, y el diseño impresionó a Leonard Lord, director gerente de Austin, que estaba buscando un reemplazo para el fracasado A90. El diseño de la carrocería fue de Gerry Coker, el chasis fue construido por vigas cruzadas, produciendo una estructura relativamente rígida sobre la cual montar la carrocería, soldando de manera innovadora el mamparo frontal al marco para mayor resistencia. Based on Austin A90 Atlantic mechanicals, it was developed by Donald Healey to be produced inhouse by his small Healy car company in Warwick. Healey built a single Healey Hundred for the 1952 London Motor Show, and the design impressed Leonard Lord, the managing director of Austin who was looking for a replacement of the failed A90. The body styling was by Gerry Coker, the chassis was built by cross bracing making it a relatively rigid structure upon which the body was mounted and innovatively welded the front bulkhead to give it a greater strength. In order to keep the overall vehicle height low, the rear axle was underslung and the chassis frame passing under the rear axle assembly.

Lord struck a deal with Healey to build it in quantity. Bodies were made by Jensen Motors using Austin mechanical components from Austin’s Longbridge plant. The car was renamed Austin-Healey 100.

The “100” was named by Healey because of the car’s ability to reach 100 mph (160 km/h). Apart from the first twenty cars, production of Austin-Healey 100 were finished at Austin’s Longbridge plant alongside the A90 and based on fully trimmed and painted body/chassis units manufactured by Jensen in West Bromwich, in an arrangement the two companies had previously explored with the Austin A40 Sports. 14,364 Austin-Healey 100s were produced.

The 100 was the first of three models which were later named the Big Healeys in order to distinguish them from the much smaller Austin-Healey Sprite. The Big Healeys were often referred to by their three-character designators instead of their models, as their model names do not reflect the differences and similarities well. This 100 is a model built for the 24hours of Le Mans. It was the last of this series.

It is a single variety white made with our variety of Palomino fino in albariza soils. La gran obra de Viñedos Verticales, un proyecto que se forma con una gran unión y colaboración de Vicente Inat, enólogo de Bodegas Descalzos Viejos (Ronda) y Juan Muñoz de Bodegas Dimobe situado en la Axarquía malagueña. Viñedos ubicados en Moclinejo, a los pies del mediterráneo, con laderas de pizarra y brisa marina. Un excelente vino blanco elaborado en fudres de 3300 l., donde obtiene una crianza de 10 meses. 90% Moscatel de Alejandría y un 10% de Pedro Ximénez. Una producción limitada de 5.364 botellas anuales. Nos encontramos un coupage de: Moscatel de Morisco, Pedro Ximénez y Doradilla (variedad autóctona de Málaga). Un blanco fresco, fácil de beber para disfrutar en este verano atípico y que es ideal para acompañar a todo tipo de pescados, mariscos, arroces y fideguá. A new Project by Bodegas Excelencia, situated in Ronda. It is a young, fresh, light and very aromatic wine. We find a coupage of Muscat of Morisco, Pedro Ximénez and Doradilla (a native variety from Malaga). It is a fresh white, easy to drink and enjoy during this atypical summer. It is ideal to accompany all types of fish, seafood, rice and fideuá.

Quizás sea difícil sintetizar de mejor manera al personaje y su obra, en su contexto vital, que en estos versos que le dedicó su amigo Rafael Alberti.

Joaquín Peinado, nacido cuando acababa el siglo XIX, ha sido uno de esos pintores distintos a los que el tiempo está haciendo justicia. Quizás por el tiempo difícil que le tocó vivir, por su carácter reservado, su timidez o su discreta bonhomía, su figura no brilló en vida como lo está haciendo ahora.

Joaquín Peinado was born at the end of the 19th century and is one of those different types of painters which time is doing justice to. Perhaps due to the life he lived, his reserved character, his shyness or discreet bonhomie, his stature did not shine in life as it does now.

Peinado nació en Ronda en 1898, comenzó sus estudios en el internado del Colegio Británico de Gibraltar y con apenas 18 años se trasladó a Sevilla para estudiar Comercio. La casualidad quiso que su afición por la pintura se convirtiera en su profesión.

Peinado was born in Ronda in 1898, he started his studies at the British boarding school in Gibraltar and at the young age of 18, he moved to Seville to study Commerce. What was his hobby by chance turned into his career.

Por influencia de los hermanos pintores Mario y Dario Villares, que pasaban unos días en Ronda y vieron las cualidades artísticas del joven, su padre lo trasladó a Madrid donde comenzó su formación en la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. Acabados sus estudios en la capital de España, su destino, como casi todos los artistas de su generación, fue París.

As a result of the influence of sibling painters Mario and Dario Villares, who spent several days in Ronda and had seen the qualities of this young artist, his father moved him to Madrid where he started his studies at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. Once he completed his studies in the Spanish capital, his destination like most artists of his generation was Paris.

Su actividad en París fue intensa. Entabla amistad con el grupo de artistas españoles que residía en la capital francesa. Con ellos pasa interminables jornadas de tertulias, fiestas y política. Pero la esencia, el centro de su vida parisina, era la pintura. Y así, en el año 1924, durante la primera exposición en la que participó, en el Salón de Otoño de Paris, ocurrió algo verdaderamente relevante en la vida de Peinado: Pablo Picasso, que visitaba la exposición, se detuvo ante una de sus pinturas y comentó: “Ésta debe ser de un español”, sus acompañantes le dijeron: “no solo es español, sino también es malagueño y de Ronda” y a partir de ahí comenzó una intensa y recíproca amistad que sólo acabó con la muerte del pintor malagueño.

His activity in Paris was intense. He made friends with a group of artists who lived in the French capital. With them they shared many social gatherings, parties and politics. But the essence, the heart of Parisian life, was painting. Thus in 1924, during the first exhibition he participated in, at the Salon d’automne in Paris, something significant occurred in Peinado’s life: Pablo Picasso, who was visiting the exhibition, stopped by one of his paintings and commented “This must be the work of a Spaniard”, one of his companions told him: “not only is he Spanish but also from Malaga, from Ronda” and from then on he shared a deep and reciprocal friendship that only ended when the painter from Malaga died.

Su actividad como pintor fue incesante, participó en multitud de exposiciones en Paris y en toda Francia, colaboró en Amsterdam en los decorados de la obra “El retablo de Maese Pedro”, de su amigo Buñuel, y en Ronda como decorador y asesor artístico en el rodaje de la “Carmen” que dirigió Jacques Freyder, en 1927 gana el Premio de la Diputación de Málaga de Pintura, participa en exposiciones colectivas sobre las vanguardias de la llamada Escuela Española de París, expone en México y Checoslovaquia y poco años antes de morir, en 1965, es nombrado miembro de la Real Academia de San Telmo en Málaga.

His activity as a painter was incessant, he participated in several exhibitions in Paris and all over France, collaborated in Amsterdam on the set of the play “Master Peter’s Puppet Show” by his friend Buñuel, and in Ronda he made film prop and was the artistic adviser for the shooting of “Carmen” directed by Jacques Freyder. He won the painting prize from the Provincial Government of Malaga in 1927, participated in collective avant-garde exhibitions called Spanish School of Paris, exhibited in Mexico and Czechoslovakia and a few years before his death was named a member of the Royal Academy of San Telmo in Malaga in 1965.

The paintings of Joaquín Peinado are of diverse concept and content. Picassian and neo-classical. Orthodox and heterodox cubism or neo-cubism to Bores, sometimes surrealist influences or geometric abstraction, almost mathematical.

Magnífico retratista: pintor del alma en facetas fragmentadas a modo de diamante recién pulido. Pero también pintor del cuerpo en sus magníficos desnudos. Gran paisajista, pero fiel a su alma rondeña austero y sobrio, con predominio de la llamada “abstracción geométrica”, donde se sustituye el dibujo por un entramado de follaje y ramas determinantes de los campos de color, como muy bien lo define y describe Juan Manuel Bonet. En sus paisajes destaca lo marinero y su ambiente: botavaras horizontales y verticalidad de mástiles, faros y torres de iglesia.

A magnificent portrait painter: painter of the soul in fragmented facets like freshly polished diamonds. He was also a painter of magnificent nudes. A great landscape painter but also true to his austere and sober Ronda soul, predominantly called “geometric abstraction” where he substitutes the drawing to a decisive tapestry of foliage and branches in a field of colour, as Juan Manuel Bonet defines it so well. In his landscape paintings naval scenes stand out: horizontal booms and vertical masts, lighthouses and church towers.

Pero sin duda es el pintor del bodegón, reinterpretado y adaptado a su visión del mundo y la pintura. Sus vasos, botellas, flores, fruteros, copas, cafeteras, siempre sus molinillos de café... ahora cúbicos, ahora facetados, siempre en elegantes colores...son la dignificación de lo mundano y lo cotidiano elevándolos a la categoría de lo excepcional y único.
