ALK. by Anne-Laure Kempeneers is a newly based high-end womenswear brand. Twice a year we design a ready-to-wear collection with an eye for detail. Focussed on craftsmanship in textile design we value the handmade and cherish the ancient crafts-techniques. Every collection is built around and inspiring concept. Connected to that story we design a broad range of textiles and prints resulting in a rich collection. Translating these textiles in our designs every collection we are inspired by one specific culture with its own traditional costume. Keeping its heritage alive and translate its design elements for new generations. Where material-use is an thought-out part of every collection our aim is to design garments with a long durability. Encouraging our customers to do the same, every garment will have a care tag. Explaining the best ways to care for that specific garment, resulting in a prolonged durability. For us fashion is about beauty, it is supposed to bring joy to ones life. We create exquisite pieces, give people garments to cherish. Womenswear caracterized by a classic feminine silhouet with a rich and colourful twist through textile design.

The
conscious consumer
We believe that the production of clothing should be done in a responsible way. Give consumers the possiblity to purchase well thought-out products with a long durability and a fair price/quality rate. The price range depending on the textile applications, embroideries, and embellishments of the garment varies from 120,- to 900,-. Valuable materials, the craftsmanship and time put into the garments influence in this matter.

ALK. aims at the conscious consumer. Someone who demands to know and cares about the story of the product. The use of material, where and how it is produced and under what conditions. She is aware of the consequences overconsuming has on the earth, and therefore chooses quality over quantity. She values craftsmanship and has an interest in the heritage and traditions of different cultures. Her consicous consuming behaviour comes along with a love for nature, she treats it with the utmost respect. Not affraid to reuse, she owns a lot of vintage and second-hand pieces. Combined with the couple of high-quality pieces she purchases per year it results in an outspoken elegant style. Feminine, but perky through textures, patterns and colours. Due to only purchasing a couple of new garments per year she has a big budget to spend. Next to the vintage and second hand items one of her favourite designer is Dries van Noten.

The rich appearance of ALK. is reached through an in depth textile design process. Handmade woven pieces, embellishments, embroideries and applications are our strenght. Connected to that the material-use is an thought-out part of every collection. High quality materials and natural fibers like felted wool, silk organza and cashmere are used in as much 100% qualities as possible. It will ease the recycling process once the garments are worn-out and give the possibility to reuse the fibers. The recycling process for fiber-blend textiles is more complicated and those garments are more likely to be send to landfill once worn out. We think it unneccesary to burden the environment like that, and prefer a closed-loup production for our garments. We aim to create high quality garments with a long durability. The first steps are taken by us through material use and construction, but the next steps are to be taken by our customers. Durability depends on quality, but care is as important. We want to inform and teach our customers about the right ways to take care of our and their garments. Therefore each garment will have and extra tag, the care tag. It will have information about how to reduce environmental impact, and prolong the durability of that garment. How to wash, how to dry and how to take care for the valuable pieces. We are aware of the negative impact the textile-industry has on the environment. This is our way of reducing that a little, step by step, through our customers.

p r o d u c t i o n
The production of the collections will partly take place in our atelier in Amsterdam, and partly in a factory in Nepal called ‘Be Suited’. This factory is a result of a project from Studiojux.org, and is located in the capital of Nepal, Kathmandu. Studiojux.org started this factory, in this location to create jobs in one of the poorest countries in the world. It is a small factory with 20 employees, all educated by the factory itself. ALK. chose this specific factory because of the ethical aspect. We think Studio JUX has an inspiring idea, providing jobs and stimulate a local economy. Providing an education, and therefore a future for these individuals. Giving them the opportunity to develop themselves, and become a professional in the industry. Currently, Studio JUX is full owner of the factory, so it can easily implement fair labour standards, values and work according to Western quality standars. The company is also a member of the Fair Wear Foundation, an independent auditor of labour circumstancest. Out of considerations of empowerment, Studio JUX is slowly pulling out of its factory ownership, so it can become its own full and legal owner. Be Suited produces clothes for fair+eco clothing brand Studio JUX. Their aim is to work in a sustainable way. That is the other aspect that encouraged ALK. to choose this factory. We are aware of the negative impact the textile industry has on the environment, and therefore we want to produce as environmental friendly as possible. Be Suited gives us that opportunity. Our collections will partly be made in this factory, and partly in our atelier in Amsterdam. The handwork, embellishments, applications and embroideries in our textiles need preparation, and hours of intensive handwork. The textiles will be prepared in our atelier and then send to the factory for further production. With a focus textiles, the garments breathe craftsmanship. The detailed textile manipulations are made with effort and are timeconsuming. We do not make mass production pieces. High quality in material use, construction and finishings the garments have a long durability and are worth treasuring.

We aim to sell our ALK. by Anne-Laure Kempeneers products in the boutique deparment store Haussmann, a new luxury retail concept, to be opened the second half of 2016 in the historic centre of Amsterdam. Their focus will be on luxurious fashion and high quality products. They give young promising Dutch designers a chance to present themselves among other luxury brands and we, being a newly based high quality brand would like to be part of that. Next to that our collection will be sold via our webshop.

Overgrowth is the concept for the F/W 2016-2017 collection. A story inspired by the recent focus on sustainability and the returning of our respect and care for nature. The world has entered a new epoch, the Anthropocene. An era in which humanity is influencing every aspect of the earth and in which they are the largest drivers of change. In this worlds society, where nature is being destroyed and undervalued, a certain power of awareness is working its way up. The rhythm of nature is slowly rising, with a beat so loud It cannot be ignored. This concept is about the balance between mankind and nature. The relationship between these two. We are used to a world where mankind is cultivating nature, we are controlling almost every part of it. The marks of our presence are in all its ecosystems. So then there’s our scenario. What would happen if instead of people cultivating nature, nature will be cultivating people? Give nature the chance to grow back, to take its rightful place and to eventually rise in its earlier state. To let it overgrow our creations on this planet, like the way mankind has overgrown nature before. I want to create an awareness within our society. Awareness about how we are treating nature now, how we have to stop taking everything it has to offer us, and learn to share this world. I will do this by showing its beauty and let people see how inspiring and magnificent it can be. The first concept, Solid Systems, is where nature is overgrowing the dry, concrete, manmade cities. In this phase nature is organised and graphic. It shows its ability to not only grow wild, but also be clean and minimalistic. Then there’s Rich Reflection, where nature overgrows the transparent, mirroring surfaces. A contrast between the smooth and translucent manmade objects and the textured, colourful nature. Inspired by the blooming flora of the coral reefs. Shimmering, slowly becoming more three-dimensional. The story ends with Native Nature. Overgrowth in its biggest form, voluminous and raw. Inspired by the rough layered barks of trees. Surfaces become more wild and the materials are unravelling. The high-end collection based on the contrast between the concrete, smooth, manmade surfaces and the irrational, blooming and colourful nature. There’s a focus on quality and craftsmanship in both material and construction. Divided in three sub-concepts the overgrowth of nature is presented through the use of applications, embroideries, embellishments, the use of cords and prints. With a natural gradient the textile manipulations are slowly increasing, taking over the garment, to a point where you can no longer see the base material. Triggered, inspired and fascinated by it, this will be our plea, our homage to and for nature.

Every collection we combine two inspiring stories. A collection is built around a story, a concept. Connected to that story we design a broad range of textiles and prints, resulting in a rich collection. While translating these textiles in our designs we add an extra dimension. Crafts are an important part of our collections; embroideries, woven pieces, and prints are returning aspects. We believe craft is woven into culture. In order to preserve this cultural heritage every collection we are inspired by one specific culture with its own traditional costume. We translate the design elements for new generetions, in a modern way. Together with the textile story every collection will have that connection, an interesting combination of the concept and the ethnical story resulting in new silhouettes and designs. For our F/W 2016-2017 collection we focussed on the traditional Japanese costume. One of the most well known garments, and cultural heritage, in Japan is the kimono. Kimono is a collective noun for a variety of traditional garments, it means ‘ thing to wear’. It includes the kimono, haori (short jackets) and the obi (waistband). The kimono comes in many types and sizes. It depends on the gender, age and marital statis of the wearer. This collection is inspired by the silhouette of the kimono. Coats in floorsweeping lengths, and sleeves extremely wide at the wrist. V-shaped necklines and overlapping closures. A focus on the waist, and an occasional macrame belt inspired by the Japanese obi. Pleats are creating vollume from the waist down to a midi length and the side split is a returning design-element in the collection.

Solid Systems The textile story of F/W 2016-2017 is divided in three substories. Where nature is clean and graphic at first, it unravels and becomes more voluminous and threedimensional. Solid Systems The story starts with a chapter about organised nature. It’s ability to not only grow wild and messy, but to also be clean and minimalistic. Sharp cut leaves with graphic lines, perfectly shaped plants that look as if they have been created by mankind. A contrast between the concrete, manmade cities and a bright green nature. Grey, dry and hard materials as a base, overgrown by the more supple and soft materials in an organised way. Thick felted wools with metallic beads and silk embroideries. Layered surfaces with wool, tulle and calcic textures. Cut out graphic shapes in the textiles are combined with prints that show a graphic, magnified nature. Sharp cut leaves become big placed prints, combined with textured prints, growing with a natural gradient. The colours are a combination of grey, green and white in different shades. Deep and dark grey tones to bright, living greens.

Rich Reflection Where nature overgrows the transparent, mirroring surfaces. A contrast between the smooth and translucent, manmade and the textured, colourful nature. Inspired by the blooming flora of the coral reefs where the underwater world is influencing its surroundings. With a focus on the various textures and bright colours, the shapes grow and become more voluminous. The textiles have a mirroring quality, they are shimmering and seem to be moist. Textile manipulations are rich and frisky in material and colour. This is the part where everything is becoming more three-dimensional, flowers are created out of cords and sequins, the manipulations become more layered. The prints are inspired by the colourful flowers in their endless different shapes. Created by using different materials on top of each other, transparent transfer foil, paint prints and embroideries combined result in bright layered prints. Grey is a base colour in this part. The shimmering qualities of the textiles create different shades from every point of view. A vibrant red in multiple tones and blues and greens as accent colours.

Native Nature Overgrowth in its biggest form, voluminous and raw. Inspired by the rough layered barks of trees, nature grows wild and increasingly influences the silhouette. With a focus on textures, everything becomes oversized. Materials are unravelled and the textile applications are piling up. Big tassels, macramÊ knotted pieces and fringes are covering the base material until it’s no longer visible. Voluminous, two-coloured neoprene’s with a jersey feeling form the base, combined with wools in different qualities, cotton cords and firm jerseys. Deep green, grey, black and blue are combined with a vibrant orange and a grey-ish blue to light up the whole.
