A big welcome to this year’s Kendal Mountain Festival – the largest and most diverse mountain film festival worldwide.

Mountain film lies at the heart of Kendal Mountain Festival and this year we have an outstanding line up which reflects the diverse and exciting work of some very talented filmmakers. We are convinced there are some future classics to see over the festival weekend.

Our lecture and live events programme remains the strongest and widest ranging of any outdoor festival – anywhere! But above all we are a mountain festival and this is reflected in our speaker list, which includes ground breaking mountaineers who have put their stamp on climbing history. For us a must see is Fred Beckey, who is still climbing at 89 – there must be a lesson here for all of us! The rest of the programme gives a diverse picture of contemporary adventure at the cutting edge. There’s a whole range of inspiring stories and we hope you enjoy them.

You may have noticed that there was another event in Britain this year – it’s a great pleasure to welcome four Olympians and Paralympians to ‘Kendal’. They bridge the world of competitive sport with that of adventure, endurance and wilderness.

This year marks the 30th Anniversary of the Boardman Tasker Award for Mountain Literature and so for this year – as well as the traditional Friday afternoon award ceremony – Kendal Mountain Festival is hosting a special gala event. Over the past thirty years the award has played a key role in encouraging mountaineering authors and we’re delighted to be able to celebrate this remarkable achievement and at the same time celebrate the lives of two great British mountaineers – Joe Tasker and Pete Boardman.

Kendal has always evolved and as with the increasingly diverse film programme we present, over the past few years we’ve seen a tremendous rise in interest in our Specialist Sessions – Snow Sport, Wild Water, Bike, Free Flight and Endurance. To fully encompass this demand we’ve established the Adventure Sport Village at the Dojo. This is new for 2012 and is where all of the Specialist Sessions will take place, along with a new marquee area full of exciting stands, displays and events.

Kendal Mountain Festival is defying the current economic gloom – and it should be obvious from reading this programme that this is an outstanding event. As Patrons we’d like to take this opportunity to recognise the hard work and dedication of the Festival Directors – pulling this together is a year round effort!

We’d also like to ask you to play your part as festival goers – please take a look at the ‘Supporting the Festival Page’ (Page 76) and then sign up and become a Friend of Kendal Mountain Festival.

But above all Kendal remains a gathering. It’s THE annual event for like minded people to get together and celebrate the wonder of wild places and adventure and just have a great time.

So enjoy the festival.

Sir Chris Bonington and Leo Houlding Festival Patrons

Kendal Mountain Festival’s vision is to inspire more people to explore, enjoy and represent mountains, wilderness and their cultures.

Film Club

In a new joint venture FILMCLUB is bringing a special free film screening of One Life to the Kendal Mountain Festival. Places are all free for schools and will be issued on a first come, first served basis.

This spectacular new documentary was made by the BBC but designed to be seen on cinema screens. They’re going for the big basics of nature here: how animals feed, breed and survive, from the small (frogs) to the big (elephants) and on land, sea and air. Daniel Craig takes over the narrating duties so often done by David Attenborough in the past, but of course it is the creatures themselves who are the stars: the seals, eagles, hippos and many more...

Book Event Boardman Tasker 30th Anniversary Commemorative Event

Featuring: Sir Chris Bonington, Doug Scott, Andy Cave, Roger Hubank and

Stephen Venables

Presented by Charles Clarke

In 1982 Pete Boardman and Joe Tasker disappeared at a key juncture during a bold attempt to make the first, full ascent of the entire North East Ridge of Everest. This award was instigated both as memorial to two outstanding mountaineers, but also to recognise their individual achievements as writers in the belief that the best way to honour their memory was through encouraging other talented authors within mountain literature.

For thirty years, ‘BT’ – as it is invariably known – has played a key role in championing mountain literature both at home and abroad.

To celebrate this key anniversary, Britain’s leading mountaineers and mountain authors –including Sir Chris Bonington, Roger Hubank, Doug Scott, Stephen Venables, Charles Clarke and Andy Cave – will take to the stage to both celebrate the award and think back thirty years to those epic days on Everest. With archive film footage by Jim Curran & Allen Jewhurst (Chameleon TV).

Film Premiere Wide Boyz

Tom Randall, Pete Whittaker & Paul Diffley

The London Metro said, “Jammed in a Crevice”. The Daily Mail said, “They’ve Cracked It” and The Star stated “It’s Tough at the Top”.

Filmmakers Paul Diffley and Chris Alstrin documented Tom Randall and Pete Whittaker’s ‘wide boyz’ trip to the States, the story of two climbers who searched out the widest, dirtiest and hardest offwidths that this planet has to offer. The journey, the training, the routes and the failures – the whole story, no holds barred. It’s not about the grade, it’s about the experience and when it comes to ‘The Wide’ the experience is the same for everyone.

This testament to off-width pain and suffering shows for the first time, courtesy of RAB and Patagonia.

Marmot Night: The Shark’s Fin

Featuring Robert Jasper

How many mountaineers have climbed 8c? How many 8c climbers have also soloed the three great North Faces of the Alps in record time? Robert Jasper has and, astonishingly, those life-defining ascents form only part of the impressive CV of the man who will be the main attraction of Marmot Night.

Add to that an 8a first ascent on the Eiger, hard new routes in both Tierra del Fuego and Baffin Island and climbing Mt McKinley by two different routes in four days and it’s obvious we’re talking about an exceptional climber. Robert will begin the evening by talking about his much-celebrated first ascent of the ‘Japanese Direct’ on the Eiger North Face and delve into his long love affair with the Nordwand and the numerous climbs he has tackled on the historic mountain face. He will also cover his recent first ascent of ‘Odisea de Magallanes’ on Monte Sarmiento in Tierra del Feugo.

John Horscroft will be kicking off the evening by exploring Robert’s motivations and what makes him return time after time to the toughest climbs in the toughest locations.

Fun! Mountain Equipment Pub Quiz

Hosted by Andy Kirkpatrick

Last year’s inaugural Pub Quiz was a night to remember for many reasons –Kendal at its best; funny, anarchic and slightly out of control.

Once again this year Andy Kirkpatrick is at the helm so you can always expect the unexpected, while quizmaster Mick Ryan from UKClimbing sets the questions. We’ll be ensuring that topics range far and wide, including some rounds that may have nothing whatsoever to do with climbing. So make sure your team includes plenty of talent! Just 22 tables available – book early to avoid disappointment!

Tickets are sold individually, but the quiz will be structured in teams of six. If you want to enter as a team, buy six tickets and you can all grab a table together. If you just want to take part as an individual, buy a single ticket and scratch teams will be made up on the night.

Skiing the 7 Continents

Jim Blyth

Brought up in Ballater in the south-eastern Cairngorms, Jim says he had his first contact with mountaineering through his parents, primary school and the Ballater Scouts. Now a qualified mountain guide living near Chamonix, Jim specialises in ski mountaineering. As he says, “90% of my work is on skis, the majority of which is on exploratory trips anywhere in the world. Provided an area is safe and has mountains and snow, it should be visited – all countries I have skied in have given unforgettable experiences”. Jim also runs climbing expeditions to places such as East Africa (six trips), Jordan, Peru, Bolivia, Canada, New Zealand, Nepal and Tibet. After Friday night’s ‘Wide Boyz’ film premiere, Tom Randall and Pete Whittaker give a special lecture recounting the full details of their trip to the States, searching out the widest, dirtiest and hardest off-widths that the planet has to offer and beating the Americans at their own game.

The London Metro said, “Jammed in a Crevice”. The Daily Mail said, “They’ve Cracked It” and The Star stated “It’s Tough at the Top”. As Tom says, “What made the popular media interested in this obscure niche of climbing, I really don’t know. Within just a few hours I was asked to do an interview with BBC Radio Sheffield and one for BBC News 24 – crikey, I thought – do they actually know what an off-width is?”

The commission was awarded to Dom Bush, with the brief as follows: The Edgeland will look at the real and/ or the perceived physical, social, economic and cultural barriers that divide the post-industrial and economically depressed urbanised communities located around the fringes of the Lake District National Park from the rurally remote settlements that nestle in the mountainous landscape of the National Park itself.

Dom’s film will be premiered at this special screening with contributions from Richard Foster (Chief Executive, Brewery Arts Centre) and Richard Leafe (Chief Executive, Lake District National Park Authority).

Survival Strategies for High-Risk Situations

Will Gadd

Some might call Will an over-achiever, others merely a man that’s having a good time.

His many achievements include: Establishing the hardest mixed ice climbing lines in the world. Setting the world distance record for paragliding. Twice. Kayaking down dozens of first ascents across North America. Winning the Canadian National Sport-Climbing Championships. Four times. Winning three gold medals at the X Games. And the Ice Climbing World Cup. Winning the US and Canadian Paragliding Nationals. Flying a paramotor across the USA. First one-day ascent of the tallest mountain in the Canadian Rockies, Mt. Robson. Solo. Climbing ‘the hardest ice route in the world’, Helmcken Falls in Canada with compadre Tim Emmett. Will’s presentation, in his own words is: “basically about tools for survival in the mountains and life that I’ve learned both the fun and the hard way...” In association with Black Diamond.

Berghaus Night Part 1: An Adventurous Gene

Karen Darke

“Luckily I’ve got an adventurous gene, as life in a wheelchair is full of unexpected adventure...“ So says Karen, a keen runner, climber and all round outdoor addict until the age of 21 when she fell off a crag and became paralysed from the chest down.

Karen began pursuing alternative ways to access the outdoors. Handcycling across the Tien Shan and Karakoram mountains, then the length of the Japanese archipelago. Sea kayaking 1,200 miles of the Canada/Alaska coastline, crossing the Himalayas by handcycle, and a 600km traverse of the Greenland ice cap in temperatures below -40 degrees. Climbing El Capitan, the giant granite rock face in Yosemite National Park was a huge mental challenge, getting back on the ropes and working through the fear. All this was perfect preparation for what was to come next... being selected as part of the British Cycling Team for the London 2012 Paralympics in the sport of handcycling, and gaining a fanastic silver medal!

Berghaus Night Part 2: Autana Nights

Leo Houlding & Alastair Lee

Earlier this year, top adventure climber (and Kendal patron) Leo Houlding hatched a plan; to make a first ascent on a Venezuelan tepui, approaching through thick jungle and climbing the wall ground-up in the best possible ‘Heart Of Darkness’ style. And speaking of style, there to record the epic was adventure filmmaker extraordinaire Alastair Lee.

Cerro Autana is a spectacular tepui situated near the Colombian border. The team chose a line on the east face where 100% humidity, 35-degree heat and torrential downpours combined with mosquitos, flies and a dozen different species of ants made for an irritating backdrop against the more serious menace of tarantulas, scorpions and deadly snakes. After a dangerous approach through vertical jungle, weaving up roots and vines, through hanging gardens and waterfalls, the team forged a 400m route that they called The Yopo Wall (E6 6b, A1). For Kendal, Leo and Al present lots of behind-the-scenes stories and action, deleted scenes and bloopers including a ‘Behind the Trees’ rib-tickler where filmmaker Al Lee does an on-stage character assassination of the rest of the crew. Not to be missed!

Ines Papert

At end of the world. Far away from civilisation. Exposed. Remote… Ines Papert takes you on a journey into her world. Ines tells about her successes and failures, sharing joy with companions, a zest for life, loneliness and moments of happiness. We get an emotional insight into the life of the professional mountaineer, learning about passion and calling, ethics and tradition and an answer to the question; how does a single mother deal with the responsibility for her son alongside the risks of mountaineering? Ines talks about ascents spanning the south-east face of Mount Kyzyl Asker (5,842 m) in Kyrgyzstan, redpointing Super Cirill (9 pitches, 8a/8a+) in the Bavona Valley, Switzerland, and two road-trips across the Scottish highlands.

Arnold Fanck –Bergfilm

Matthias Fanck

If the genre of Mountain Film, or Bergfilm could be said to have a father figure then it would undoubtedly be Arnold Fanck. A pioneering filmmaker between the wars, Fanck – using techniques quickly adopted by the rest of the film industry – directed a whole raft of classic feature films set in the mountains. While his films were works of fiction he invariably filmed on location in the high mountains and his techniques had a major influence of documentary filmmakers.

In a special retrospective – and first in the UK – Arnold’s grandson, Matthias Fanck will guide you through his grandfather’s work, highlighting why he was such a great filmmaker whose work has stood the test of time.

Indefatigable

Fred Beckey

Mountain legend Fred Beckey is still climbing at 89, every day if he can. The mountaineer and author is renowned as ‘one of America’s most colourful and eccentric mountaineers’ – unofficially recognised as the all-time world-record holder for the number of first ascents credited to one man.

His reputation is well known among climbers, captured in a T-shirt ‘Beware of Beckey: He will steal your woman, steal your route’.

For Kendal, Fred will talk about his life and climbs with reminiscences from the Sierra Nevada to the Cascade range, to British Columbia, the Yukon and Alaska.

He’ll cover first ascents in the Canadian Rockies, the Bugaboos, Wyoming and the Coloradan mountains, plus the American deserts with images and film.

At the beginning of April, it really starts to get light again. Lifting the powerful silhouette of the 400 million year-old mountain known to the Sami as Vassitjåkka.

The wind-sculpted landscape surrounding it is covered in cold, white, feathery snow. An instructive playground for generations of skiers. This is where we found the inspiration we were looking for to create our new clothes and ski backpacks, designed in collaboration with two of the most experienced freeskiers we know, Per Jonsson and Asbjørn Eggebø Næss.

Presented by Haglöfs, the Swedish outstanding outdoor equipment manufacturer and supported by Whitedot Skis, this is our biggest Snowsports event ever.

We have a host of entertainment and chat from the ‘Godfather of Free-skiing’ – Mike Douglas from Whistler Blackcomb. Mike will be presenting the European première of his stunning new film ‘Tempting Fear’. We will also have the skier and star of the film, Andreas Fransson and skier producer Bjarne Sahlén on stage to talk about the story behind the film. Andreas Fransson has been called the boldest extreme skier in a generation. Over the past three years he’s logged first descents in a half-dozen countries, battled back to life from an accident that nearly killed him and become the most talked about skier in the epicentre of all things extreme – Chamonix, France. All this plus the latest snow film offerings from around the mountains of the world.

The event will also feature an afternoon session ‘Ski Test’ by Whitedot Skis and ski and board sessions at the local Kendal Snowsports Club.

British Mountain Guides

Mike ‘Twid’ Turner, Andy Nelson, Owain Jones

The British Mountain Guides are a small group of high experienced and qualified professional mountaineers and climbers. Through their own extensive adventures, Alpine Guides enthuse and train mountaineers to help them accomplish their own dream climbs.

Three short lectures will show the breadth of their travels and work. It’s an ideal opportunity to be inspired and learn how to make steps towards your own adventures. A question and answers session will follow each talk.

Mike ‘Twid’ Turner – Rock Climbing Around the British Isles and World Wide Rock Trips

The ‘nuts and bolts’ of climbing. Moves on ‘trad’ and sports climbing, adventure further afield around the world and build to greater expeditions like big walling.

Andy Nelson: Scottish Winter Climbing

Andy will show some pictures of Scottish winter climbing to give an insight into what British Mountain Guides can offer and give a flavour of the winter climbing game, from classic gullies to modern snowed up rock buttress routes.

Owain Jones: Introduction to Alpine Mountaineering

The talk is intended to provide top tips and ideas for anyone who wants to make the step from the UK mountains and crags to those of the alpine ranges of the Western Alps. Relevant to beginners and for those with some alpine experience seeking new challenges.

Mountaineering has produced the biggest body of artistic work of any sport – bar none. Spreading out from the festival hub at the Brewery Arts Centre is a network of art that reflects the diversity of the mountains and the mountain experience.

New for 2012 is our Mountain Art Trail, at venues throughout Kendal and the South Lakes.

Freya Horsley

“Led by my responses to landscape, light and weather and also by the process of painting itself, I make paintings that refer to both the permanent elemental nature of land and a more ephemeral sense of fluidity and change. Soaring mountains, eroded cliffs, and rugged moorland form a backdrop to the flux and movement of rolling skies, vast seas and shifting light”

In the Warehouse.

Tom McNally

Tom McNally is a landscape and climbing photographer based in the Keswick area of The Lake District. As an avid climber, mountaineer, fell runner and mountain biker, Tom spends as much time in the mountains as possible.

“I am interested in capturing that special, often very brief moment when different components of the landscape harmonise to produce a scene that is genuinely breathtaking.”

Abbot Hall

Just across the road from the Brewery Arts Centre, Abbot Hall has one of the most important collections of mountain art in the UK. Over the festival period they have three important exhibitions on display. Normal Abbot Hall entry applies.

Around the Lakes with Edward Lear

The works by the great Victorian eccentric, artist and nonsense poet, Edward Lear (1812-88) includes four watercolours and drawings.

Helen Petts – ‘Throw Them Up and Let Them Sing’

Helen Petts’ film response to the life and work of artist Kurt Schwitters explores landscape, rhythm, texture, sound, improvisation and walking, using footage shot in locations that were a major inspiration to Schwitters: Norway, where he holidayed and first escaped to as a refugee from Nazi Germany and Loughrigg Fell, Rydal Terrace and the Merzbarn in the Lake District.

Kurt Schwitters

Abbot Hall has a wonderful collection of works by Schwitters which will be shown alongside Petts’ poetic and inspirational film, highlighting the power that the German artist still exerts on contemporary artists and musicians.

Brantwood East of the Lake, Coniston

John Ruskin – who settled at Brantwood in the shadow of Coniston Old Man – had an immense influence on the development of mountain landscape art. This house continues to be a centre of mountain art.

Angie and David Unsworth –‘The Materials of Mountains’

Angie

and

David Unsworth are traditional film photographers working as a creative partnership, in the English Lake District making contemporary photographs with 10x8 and 5x4 large format field cameras. In this exhibition they explore how these fragments of landscape, rich in their emotional resonance and personal interpretation, can move us beyond the merely representational to a landscape of thought and imaginative engagement.

The Festival aims to show the very best in mountain-based film, across the broadest spectrum. The film competition is the beating heart of Kendal, and sets it apart from other UK Film Festivals. Films are screened in ten competitive categories, with winners judged by a panel of film and mountain luminaries and – in the case of the People’s Choice prize – the audience itself.

A trophy sculpted by Andy Parkin, cash prizes up to £1000 will be awarded under the following headings:

The Judges

Lucy Creamer

Having been introduced to climbing in 1988 at college in Bristol, Lucy’s life took on a whole new direction. Thoughts of becoming a P.E. teacher were diverted to the world of outdoor activities and instructing. Consequently, she taught at various centres around the UK for a few years, living the life of a multi-activity instructor. But it wasn’t until the Bristol Climbing Centre opened in 1992, that with their support, she really started to feel like a climber. This was the point that as she says, “I made the brave/unwise decision to dedicate my life to climbing”. And the rest – as they say – is history and Lucy is now recognized as one of the world’s leading climbers. Twenty plus years down the line, Lucy’s happy to say, “it is still my one true passion”.

Hardest of the Alps

Bongo Bar

Directed & Produced by Paul Diffley

This film documents the first free ascent of Bongo Bar in arctic Norway by Scottish climber Dave MacLeod. Bongo Bar is a 400m route on the granite north face of Blamann. This face hosts many long, hard, aid routes and only in recent years have climbers begun to see the potential for these routes to be climbed free. The film follows MacLeod as he prepares to make the ascent. It combines footage taken of the first ascent, both via long lens and on wall cameras, with ‘handy cam’ video shot by the climbers themselves.

Wide Boyz

Directed & Produced by Paul Diffley & Chris Alstrin

The world of off-width crack climbing is a strange sub-culture rumoured to be dominated by knuckle dragging, bar brawling dirt bags! The climbing is tough, painful and bloody. Two climbers from England, Pete Whittaker and Tom Randall, set out to explore this world and climb the world’s hardest off-widths. They complete a brutal two year training regime, mostly spent hanging upside down in a suburban Sheffield basement, before embarking on a tour of the USA. The trip culminates in the first ascent of the ultimate off width test piece, Century Crack –the worlds hardest off-width.

Verticalement Demode

Directed & Produced by Davide Carrari

It’s not the most difficult route in the world; it’s simply the most difficult ‘sports’ route that I have climbed. It has a long story which began when for the first time I asked myself – “what are the places like, where the sun sets every evening? Eternity is hidden up there, in a solitary, forgotten landscape in these mountains, small and ‘vertically old fashioned’ halfway between this place where I was born and the places where I have lived”: with these words and the images of the rock face he is climbing, Maurizo ‘Manolo’ Zanolla talks about his motivation and emotions on rediscovering a route that he identified many years before but which he had long believed impossible for him to face.

Le Dessous de Ganesh

A trip to India is always an unnerving experience, even if on a climbing trip it’s hard to ignore the chaos that reigns in this incredible destination. The stunning contrasts, odours, sounds and colours accompanied the Petzl team and local climbers on their adventures between Hampi and Badami. Gérome Pouvreau tells the story of the trip and his main project, the mystical route of Ganesh.

Autana

Directed & Produced by Alastair Lee

Adventure climber Leo Houlding and film maker Alastair Lee are back with another sumptuous production of truly epic proportions. This time Leo (UK) and fellow climbers Sean Leary (USA) and Jason Pickles (Salford) head deep into the Amazon in an attempt to make the first ascent of the east face of the remote tepui; Cerro Autana.

The action beings with a covert journey via military check-points and secret ports through Amazonas State. Our team of clandestine climbers disguised as tourists travel down the Orinoco River to the remote village of Ceguera where they make a traumatic psychotropic visit to the local Shaman to gain access to the sacred mountain.

From here sweltering humidity, porter chaos and an assortment of jungle nasties are just a part of this spectacular journey of selfdiscovery and big wall hunting. Follow our team of redoubtable characters as they find their way up the jungle infested rock face as they are amazed not only at the climbing but a luxury wall camp in the incredible Autana Cave system just below the summit of the tepui (highest elevated cave system in the world).

An adventure unlike any other, adventure film making takes another step into the unknown with superb results. Original, experimental, entertaining and visually stunning, Posing Productions presents; Autana.

Non Cosi: Lontano

Directed & Produced by Herve Barmasse

In 2011, Herve Barmasse chose the three most important mountains of his home in Italy’s Aosta Valley – Monte Bianco: Monte Rosa; and Monte Cervino – upon which to create three new routes. The three peaks, not coincidentally, are among the highest in the Alps. On Monte Bianco, with two Basque friends, Barmasse established a new route on the left pillar of Brouillard. On Monte Rosa, he put up a new route on the southeast face of the Punta Gnifetti with his father Marco. Finally on Cervino, in the face of high risk and difficulty, he established a new route on Peak Muzio, solo. All three climbing adventures were exceptional for their location, their remoteness and for the spirit that characterized them. And now all three climbs have been captured in the film ‘Not So Far’.

Tempting Fear

Directed & Produced by Mike Douglas Andreas Fransson has been called the boldest extreme skier in a generation. Over the past three years he’s logged first descents in a half dozen countries, battled back to life from an accident that nearly killed him and became the most talked about skier in the epicentre of all things extreme - Chamonix, France. What makes Andreas most intriguing, however, are his thoughtful musings on meaning from a life on the edge –a willingness to enter mental spaces that few have every experienced. In ‘Tempting Fear’ Sweden’s soft spoken ‘Adventurer of the Year’ explores a place in which fear overwhelms all emotions, playing both friend and enemy in a ‘pas de deux’ where death lies just one misstep away.

The Elder

Directed by Skip Armstrong;

Produced by Anson Fogel

At 68, Rob Elliot has guided 200+ trips on the Grand Canyon of the Colorado river in Arizona. How do you want to be remembered, when this life joins the wind? What did you leave, in these chasms, upon these lives, young and curious? What did you write? What dust in the rain, sand in the rivers? Those you touched, embraced and kissed, loved...what echoes there? How will it travel, your wisdom, your story, your suffering and joy? These walls, silent, deafening, ancient and new? What did you make of them, what did they make of you? A life running, teaching or learning, what is escape? What did you find? Wind replenishing rain, sun? Who did those thorns see? What did these waters wash from you? The stars, in the abyss beyond, how did they shine on you? Will you release the storm, the scars, whirling as they go, yet holding love, life? The luminous child, the harsh knowing of age, what did you leave behind?

THE CHALLENGE

My name is Jerry Gore and I am a 51 yr old insulin-dependent diabetic dad. Together with three of Britain’s best climbers – Calum Muskett, Matt Dickinson and Dave Gladwin - I attempted three of the Alps’ toughest routes this summer to raise money for a cause I am 100% committed to.

THE CAUSE

10 Nepalese young people with diabetes registered at Patan Hospital, Central Nepal, who can’t afford insulin and who without it will die within a matter of months not years. If I can get just 1,000 outdoor folk to contribute £10 in total, or £5 for each climb, the money raised will buy enough insulin to give back to these young Nepalese their lives and their hope. Insulin has given me the chance to live a full and meaningful life. I want to give the same opportunity to these children.

THE THREE ROUTES

Divine Providence S. Face of Mont Blanc – the highest and hardest mountain route in Europe Tempi Moderni, S. Face of the Marmolada – Dolomites – A 1155m. meter wall of extreme rock Le Chant Du Cygne, N. Face of the Eiger – 900m. of climbing up to E6 on the Geneva Pillar

The climbs were gruelling and did not go according to plan. I had many epics, problems and deep emotions along the way which I have recorded on my facebook page “Jerry’s Insulin Challenge”

Less than 20 climbers in the World have done all three routes. No Brit has to date. I have been training for two years for this. Injecting myself up to 8 times a day to get the insulin I need has been the easy part! For a non climber this challenge is hard to put into perspective but simplistically it required the athleticism and millimetre precision of Olympic standard gymnastics in an environment where a fall could be fatal.

THE CHARITY

Insulin for Life (IFL) is a not-for-profit global organisation based in Australia (www.insulinforlife.org) that donates life-saving insulin to countries in need. In Nepal insulin is unsubsidized, so it is unaffordable. Many adults and children die as a result. However in most first world countries there is a lot of excess stock which IFL relies on, receiving donated insulin that would otherwise be destroyed. Handling and transportation costs are paid for by donations or sponsors. By keeping costs low IFL has saved thousands of lives since it was founded it 1984.

Please donate now and mail your friends so that we save these young lives and make a real difference to the diabetic community in this tiny nation, one of the poorest in the world.

To date I have raised just over £3,000 so there is still a long way to go to reach the target of £10,000.

You can donate by credit card via my facebook page “Jerry’s Insulin Challenge” or direct via the Insulin For Life website - www.insulinforlife.org

In the box marked Insulin For Life: Nepal Project”, select the amount you want to donate from £5 upwards, then press “Give”.

Thank you for your support. My Nepalese friends are really going to need it!

Craghoppers

Travel & Outdoor clothing for an extraordinary world...

Craghoppers started making clothes specifically designed for the outdoors back in 1965. A group of guys in West Yorkshire were planning to climb Everest and wanted gear to withstand the harshest of conditions, so they researched and designed fabrics that would protect them from the extreme cold. All their preparation paid off as they successfully reached the summit of Everest. This was the birth of Craghoppers.

DID YOU KNOW THAT…

...adidas founder Adolf “Adi” Dassler and his wife Käthe had a passion for hiking in the mountains? A cobbler by trade, he was an enthusiastic athlete who back in 1934 developed original hiking boots designed specifically for high-altitude mountaineering, tailor-made in the Dassler workshop in Herzogenaurach.

He selected water-repellent full-grain cow leather for the shaft and soft calf leather for the lining. The insole, all outer sole components and the welt were made from organic-tanned sole leather. Both models available featured integrated crampons in the form of hand-forged iron fixtures produced by a local craftsman. Dassler chose a variety of solutions.

The sole of his own model of boot was equipped with special forged nails with serrated iron grips that clamped to the outer rim of the sole. Käthe’s boot had crampons that reached from the edge of the sole up to the ankle. A horseshoe with sharp points was nailed onto the heel of both models of boot.

The made-to-order Dassler mountain boot with integrated crampons weighed 933 grams in size 7½ (UK). The ladies model with an unusually narrow last weighed 660 grams in size 4½ (UK). Come visit our stall at the Sports Village throughout the duration of the festival and see how we’ve developed our products.
