uwm's ENGLISH LANGUAGE ACADEMY The English Language Academy features three programs: THE INTENSIVE ENGLISH PROGRAM (IEP)

GRADUATE ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES (EAP)

The IEP is based on the Common European Framework of Reference and the Canadian Language Benchmarks. IEP students can be conditional undergraduate or graduate admits (contingent on graduate program approval). Conditionally admitted undergraduate and graduate students can move to full-time credit-bearing courses without submitting new TOEFL or IELTS scores.

Graduate students who are admitted with English required (TOEFL 68-78, IELTS 6.0) are required to take one course focusing on the skills where their TOEFL or IELTS sub-scores are the lowest – either Speaking and Listening or Reading and Writing. Any graduate student wishing to improve English language skills is welcome to take the EAP graduate level courses.

UNDERGRADUATE ENGLISH FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES (EAP) Undergraduate EAP courses are divided into two distinct sequences:

student employment International students can work up to 20 hours a week on campus while school is in session. But there are other employment opportunities for international students, too, including: CURRICULAR PRACTICAL TRAINING (CPT)

7

CPT provides off-campus work authorization after one year of study for students with an F-1 visa. A faculty member recommendation is required and a UWM immigration coordinator must authorize the employment. Employment must be a required part of the program and grant academic credit. Depending on the academic program, CPT options are limited.

OPTIONAL PRACTICAL TRAINING (OPT)

OPTIONAL PRACTICAL TRAINING STEM

OPT is authorization for employment in your field of study either before or after degree completion. Most F-1 students do 12 months of post-completion OPT after graduation. More than 80 percent of international students who apply for OPT have job placements within the first three months of graduation. Students apply directly to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for OPT.

Some students are eligible to apply for an 18-month extension during their initial 12 months of OPT, particularly students who have earned degrees in certain STEM fields and who are employed by companies registered with the USCIS. Students apply directly to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services for the OPT STEM extension.
