Behind the name of Kendrick Homes lies over a century of craftsmanship, commitment to quality and pride in a job well done. William Kendrick, Black Country man and bricklayer, founded the company in 1880. Soon his reputation for skilled and conscientious work was winning him substantial contracts all over the region. Later, he was joined by his son, who continued to guide the company’s growth after the founder’s death at the ripe old age of ninety-one. Over the years the company has completed many prestigious projects from housing to industrial, hospitals, schools and municipal buildings. Today the fourth and fifth generations of the first William Kendrick continue to guide the company, proud to see the founder’s principles of quality craftsmanship still demonstrated in the work of Kendrick Homes.

Industrial heritage, parks & the city - on your doorstep It’s easy to see why this popular suburb of Selly Oak is a sought after area for both young professionals and families alike. There is everything you need right on your doorstep and it’s also perfectly situated for university and hospital staff. Schools, Colleges and Hospital There are a number of excellent primary schools nearby including St Mary’s, Cherry Oak and Water Mill and also plenty of options for secondary school education. These include boys and girls independent schools at King Edwards, Shenley Academy and Bournville School & 6th Form Centre, as well as the Selly Park and Cadbury Technology Colleges. Birmingham University has approximately 34,000 students and staff with campus sites at Edgbaston and Selly Oak where the University of Birmingham School – a training school for secondary aged pupils – is currently under construction. The new Queen Elizabeth Hospital is less than a couple of miles away. It was opened just a few years ago offering the very latest in healthcare standards and equipment. It is also the new home of the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine, caring for injured servicemen and women.

The Selly Oak in the Park

With Birmingham City Centre located just 5 miles away, it is a quick and easy commute for anyone working in the city or those looking for an even wider range of attractions, including nightlife and culture. The well-known Bull Ring and Mailbox shopping centres will soon be supplemented by the new Grand Central development in the centre of Birmingham with over 40 shops, 15 cafes/restaurants and a large John Lewis store due to open in 2015.

The name Selly is derived from variants of “scelf-lei” pasture land on a shelf or terrace of land – while the Oak element comes from a prominent Oak tree that formerly stood at the crossroads of the Bristol Road and Oak Tree Lane/Harborne Lane. The original Oak was finally felled in May 1909 and the stump removed to Selly Oak Park, where it remains to this day, bearing a brass plaque that reads “Butt of Old Oak Tree from which the name of Selly Oak was derived.

For other shopping and entertainment options there are many other places of interest within easy reach by bus or car including the suburbs of Harborne and Bournville – home to the world-famous Cadbury World – with the larger towns of Leamington, Stratford and Worcester no more than 40 minutes by car for a perfect family day out.

Selly Oak Park is in fact one of the jewels of the area. Opened in 1899, it is the largest public park in the Selly Oak district and was awarded Green Flag status in 2013. Covering more than 30 acres, this medieval deer park provides a pleasant oasis in a busy part of the City. As well as the usual array of play equipment, the park boasts an interesting Nature, Art and History Trail and is also home to an annual Summer festival.

A Little about the Lime This area was dominated by coalmining and limestone mining for generations and Lime Grove takes its name from the lime kilns which used to exist here. Limestone and coal would have been brought along the canal and emptied into the kilns, the burnt lime then extracted through openings at ground level and used as mortar for buildings and to improve crop growth.
