How to Use a Capo on an Acoustic Guitar - Easy Guitar Tutorials A capo is a device that raises the pitch of the strings on a guitar by fretting them at the desired fret. For example, a capo installed at the second fret on a guitar in standard EADGBE tuning would then have an open tuning of Gb, B, E, A, Db and Gb. The following steps will show how to use a capo on an acoustic guitar.

•

1 Examine a quick-release capo. This is a pair of spring loaded rollers mechanically similar to a clothespin. One roller is a rubber covered bar that holds the strings down and the other roller is covered with elastic or nylon and has a curvature that matches that of the guitar's neck.

• 2 Install a quick-release capo. This is a simple matter of holding the capo open, slipping it around the guitar's neck at the desired fret and gently allowing the capo to close.

• 3 Use a quick-release capo to change keys quickly between songs to accompany different singers while retaining the same voicing.

• 4 Observe a clamp-style capo. This type fits from the side of the neck and is more difficult to install but allows for capoed tunings that leave some strings open.

• 5 Build a makeshift capo with a pencil and a rubber band. Find a pencil with flat surfaces rather than a round one. Place a flat surface of the pencil across the strings at the desired fret and tie one end of the rubber band around one end of the pencil. Bring the rubber band around the neck, wrap it tightly around the other end of the pencil and tie it off.
