Kentwood’s History
THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME
In January 1981, five brokers at Van Schaack and Company, Jack Bradbury, John Burns, Roger Campbell, Jim Nussbaum, and DeWayne Willardsen, formed the beginnings of their own distinguished brand, which would become Kentwood Real Estate.

The incorporation papers were signed by Roger Campbell, on March 19, 1981 and the principals began the arduous task of creating a quality brand, starting with the company name. “We wanted a name that was easy to say, easy to spell, memorable, and upscale,” said Campbell. “We referenced a map of England and looked at the names of cities and counties. We initially settled on The Kent Company, and then changed our minds.”
Other names in consideration were Remington, Winchester, Camelot, Essex, Sussex, Kenwood, and finally Sherwood.
The Sherwood Company’s advertising agency designed a logo containing a tree. The name didn’t last, and the Founding Five returned to the original “Kent” idea, and added “wood,” creating Kentwood. The Kentwood Company became the final, permanent name, and the tree in the logo remained, absent Robin Hood’s hat.
Over the years, principals came and left, but the core of Burns, Campbell, and Nussbaum remained. Campbell and Nussbaum are still associated with the firm today. Other recognizable names in Denver real estate history who were at one time owners of the company and/or partial owners of specific offices are Dee Chirafisi, Hank Edler, John Fitzpatrick, Julie Hummel, Bill Moore, Peter Niederman, Jim Theye, and Chris Vuletich.
The original office was located in the Denver Tech Center. The partners opened a boutique location in Cherry Creek in 1982, which closed in 1986.
In 1987 Bill Moore, CEO of the nationally renowned Moore & Company purchased 40% of Kentwood. At the same time, John Fitzpatrick purchased 10%, completing the leadership team that would carry Kentwood into the future.
The benefits to this merger were obtaining Moore & Company’s top five agents, access to Moore’s national relocation network, an infusion of cash, and Jerry Weigand in the role of managing broker – notably Weigand and his wife, Sandy, remain Kentwood brokers today.
The company’s name changed to The Kentwood-Moore Company from 1987 - 1997.
During this time, Campbell remained President and Fitzpatrick, “Fitz” became the General Sales Manager. Together they created an era of growth, leading the company into the new millennium. Fitz remains with the company today.
In 1997 when the Kentwood-Moore joint partners on the Moore side sold Moore & Co. to Coldwell Banker, the Kentwood Company owners took back full ownership, and the original name was restored.
In October 1998, 33 agents at Moore & Company’s Cherry Creek office joined together to launch Kentwood Real Estate Cherry Creek (KCC). A number of those agents are still with the company, including the current President/ CEO, Gretchen Rosenberg.
In 1999, the KCC partners added two additional principals, Dee Chirafisi and Jim Theye, to open Kentwood Real Estate City Properties (KCP), an upscale real estate office in LoDo specializing in downtown properties. Chirafisi’s brainchild and passion, Kentwood Real Estate City Properties was well ahead of the development explosion downtown.
In 2007, Peter Niederman and Bill Moore purchased the majority of the company and Niederman assumed the role of CEO. Niederman, Moore, Campbell, and Fitzpatrick saw the company through the worst financial crisis and market downturn since the Great
Depression and grew the company to 200 agents and $2.4 billion in sales volume in 2015 – a record high for sales volume per agent across the United States.
Campbell and Fitzpatrick stepped away from management in 2011 and remain with the company as brokers. Luisa Staerkel assumed the role of Managing Broker in the DTC office. Moore retired a few years later, and passed away in 2019.
Peter Niederman, a nationally respected CEO, continued to grow the company, and the Kentwood name continued to represent the top boutique brand in metro Denver. He sold the three residential offices, along with the Denver Rental division, to Berkshire Hathaway’s HomeServices of America in June 2016.
Niederman remained CEO of the company after the sale to HomeServices until January 2018. He was instrumental in starting Kentwood’s Commercial division, and also created a Business Development division out of the relocation department. In 2017 HomeServices Lending was added to the Kentwood family of companies, and was rebranded to Prosperity Home Mortgage in 2019.
In January 2018, Niederman transitioned to the role of Chairman, and handed over day-to-day operations to the current President/CEO, Gretchen Rosenberg. In 2019, Niederman retired from Kentwood operations.
Brandon Brennick manages the Denver Tech Center office, Rebecca Ferguson manages the Cherry Creek office, and Thomas Dutzer manages the City Properties and Boulder Valley offices. Sarah Tyler is the manager of the Northern Properties office located in Fort Collins.
In late 2018, Kentwood moved north, with the opening of the Kentwood Real Estate Northern Properties office located in Fort Collins, Colorado. Expect to see thoughtful and measured growth in the future, and for the Kentwood name to remain synonymous with top-tier brokerage services in Colorado.
Gretchen Rosenberg’s vision for the company, as the current President/CEO, is to continue fostering excellence in everything Kentwood stands for.
She has been with the company since 1998, and is proud to lead one of the most respected real estate brands in the U.S. The addition of COO Dierk Herbermann in 2019 has added to the bench strength of leadership, passion for excellence and commitment to our brokers.
Today’s real estate landscape is complex and changing. Kentwood Real Estate’s leadership team has positioned the company, and our next generation of brokers, to continue paving the road of success our founders began building in 1981.
