PURPOSE OF THE DOCUMENT

To provide a snapshot of Kettering’s economy now and over the next 5+ years

To identify strengths and weaknesses of key sectors within the borough

To show links with partners and organisations to ensure a joined up approach is taken

To identify key objectives and actions over the short, medium and long term

This document provides the economic context for the Town Centre Strategy and delivery of the Area Plans that relate to specific development and regeneration sites.

THE KETTERING ECONOMY

Fast growing and centrally located in the UK, Kettering’s economy is increasing well above the national rates. The area has a mix of market towns and villages that complement the wider South East Midlands economic offer. It is well connected with continued investment in both road and rail that include the main arteries of the A14, A43, A47, A509, M6, M1 and the Midland Mainline service connecting Sheffield and London. The anchor of the local economy is the growing Health and Social Care sector and Kettering General

Hospital that serves the wider North Northamptonshire area. Transport, storage and wholesaling represent the other larger employment sectors in the local economy. Nationally and locally manufacturing sector employment numbers are in decline, but they still represent significant job numbers with particular strengths in Food & Drink and Leather and Textiles.

New employment areas such as Cransley Park and Kettering Energy Park are still developing with thousands of acres of employment land available to welcome more businesses to grow and prosper.

Modern multipurpose recreational, sports and business facilities are accessible at Kettering Conference Centre and Kettering Park Hotel. Major service and specialist businesses Kettering is also home to one of have located to established business the oldest theme parks in the UK parks including Telford Way Industrial Wicksteed Park, as well as the National Park and Kettering Business Park and Volleyball Centre, Kettering Town Kettering Venture Park. INFRASTRUCTURE AND CONNECTIVITY • Significant national investment in the A14/ M1/ M6 Catthorpe Interchange in addition to improvements to junction 7 to 9 on the A14 has been delivered, improving east to west connectivity and increasing capacity for growth. • Junction 10a/A14 delivery is anticipated as part of the eastern urban extension, Hanwood Park, comes forward. • Joint delivery of Weekley - Warkton Avenue, as part of eastern urban extension • Slade Brook Flood Alleviation scheme still required to enable allocated land in Kettering town centre to come forward • Electricity Grid is at capacity, new grid connection will need new large scale user to increase network capacity. • A43 widening is required to improve connectivity with Northampton • Isham Bypass is required to improve connectivity between A14 and A45 (and Wellingborough) • Electrification and rail line improvements to Midland Mainline
