A club zombie walks

for a local cause

Sunday morning was very rainy. The gloomy weather complimented the success of the Portland Zombie Walk. This is the first volunteering service we did for our club. As 7 "zombie" Key Club volunteers, we supplied "Nial's Zombie Control Service" their needs for help: Assisting and Guiding the zombies to the event's predetermined route. Kate, Chris, Clare, Cory, Jordan, Jeri and myself wore "FLASHY" vests for the event so we would stand out from the zombie crowd. What is the Zombie Walk? It's a walk of 1,000 zombie fanatics who brought their gory and scary imagination to life! Some were so serious that if you would try to initiate a conversation--they would just give you a dead look and groan "ARGGHHHHH". Vampires, zombie nurses, marriage-gone-wrong-children-babies, name it and everything is there!

My key clubbers evaluated that more projects should be like this--- Fun, Original and Worthwhile. I'm still in the progress of imposing in their minds WHAT KEY CLUB REALLY IS. Key Clubs from our division should join the walk next time so it would be more fun and zombifyiing-some!

Best November 2011 Club Recap

?

In this month of October, David Douglas Key Club has continued to burn with enthusiasm. “Our flame of youth has only begun to spread into the hearts of our followers, but in time, it shall incite vigor and compassion within their souls and spread like wildfire.” says TOHRO (The Order of High Ranking Officials) Anyways, our school’s Club Fair was highly fruitful, resulting in over a hundred members signed up for our next meeting, which is this Tuesday, on the 1st of November. As we had hoped, the new faces seemed to be absolutely mesmerized (or rather shocked and concerned) in learning about the devastating effects of neonatal tetanus, thus we were able to convert them (beg them earnestly) to join our cause in fighting the disease. We were able to “over a hundred mem- entice them with the lure of an international awareness project (Project Elimibers signed up for our nate), aimed at educating people about neonatal tetanus and providing next meeting” vaccination for countless women who are just about our age. Therefore, here we are with a 100+ members, and a goal for the future: making the biggest impact we can in the elimination of neonatal tetanus. Prior to this school wide event, we did a little side project with the few members that we had. During one of our meetings, President Jenny Nguyen brought in a bunch of crafts supplies, and as a group we all spent our lazy afternoon writing empowering messages about “staying tough”, “being brave”, and “enjoying the beauty in life”. Subsequently, we sent these messages to children in hospitals who were terminally ill. After learning about the hardships that these children faced as a result of their illnesses, we were truly moved. Each letter was addressed to: a little hero, a fairy princess, and other magnificent beings. This was truly a heartwarming experience. (I know, I cried inside....) Following these two events, we, the members of David Douglas Key Club, participated in our very first group volunteer event of the year, at the Children’s Book Bank. Led by President Jenny Nguyen, for two hours the members immersed themselves in the task of restoring damaged children’s books. By the end of their shift, a good pile of books were ready to Editor of David Douglas High School be processed and delivered to children 4

Facebook Overlays from Key Club International Communications The International Communications Committee has released Facebook picture overlays. I think it would be awesome if every district board member (and general member!) put this as their profile picture for at least a week. The overlay allows you to select a theme in either Landscape or Portrait format, and it is designed in such a way that everyone can see your beautiful faces while simultaneously being introduced to Key Club.

2011 DISTRICT PROJECT:

KIWANIS CHILDREN CANCER PROGRAM

ABOUT THE PROJECT The Kiwanis Children Cancer Program was founded by Governor Frank Morehouse of the Pacific Northwest District of Kiwanis International in 2010. Kiwanis Governor Frank’s inspiration was a young cancer patient named Penny. Governor Frank worked at the hospital where Penny stayed. Penny was diagnosed with a brain tumor and would require surgery and radiation therapy. Penny would visit Governor Frank during her hospital stays and talk about what was happening to her. Penny eventually lost her battle with cancer. The KCCP is dedicated to Penny’s memory. The new Pacific Northwest Key Club District Governor, Varun Awasthi saw the need for this project. Our Governor made it his duty to ensure that Key Clubbers across our district knew more about children’s cancer, and make our contribution to curing cancer.

How can you help? The two greatest contributions you could make is to:  Help us educate  Help us fundraise  Sell KCCP Wristbands! (see page ) 10

The ELIMINATE PROJECT 2011-2012 eliminating neonatal & maternal tetanus WHAT IF YOU COULD SAVE A BABY’S LIFE? There are few events more joyful than the day a new baby is welcomed to the world. But in 38 countries, a dreaded disease quickly turns that joy into tragedy. Maternal and neonatal tetanus (MNT) kills one baby every nine minutes — that's 60,000 babies every year who will never grow up, make their mothers laugh, play with friends or dream about the future. The effects of the disease are excruciating — tiny newborns suffer repeated, painful convulsions and extreme sensitivity to light and touch. A significant number of women die from MNT each year too.

$1.80 (roughly) = 3 doses of tetanus vaccine
