Whether it’s transforming your home or yourself, it always signifies a change for the better. Though change can also infer to backbreaking work, especially when it comes to a home’s makeover, it’ll be just worth when you see the results. A trend that has cropped up over the years is the popularity of open concept kitchens. Not only do these kitchens afford an airier feel to the rooms, they also exude a modern design that appeals to most tastes.

Islands are a great addition to open kitchens, as they help to substantiate the space. You may want to bend the rules a little and not place the island counter right in the middle of the kitchen. Instead, you can build the standalone island perpendicular to a wall or a row of counters for a modern twist.

Another more popular option, is to use the island counter as a soft boundary between the kitchen and the rest of the home.

Counter surface

The most obvious function is the extra surface it provides – an obvious boon to any space-starved kitchen. Since the island will most likely be the central focus of the room, place important appliances there. These include items that you use daily, like the coffee machine or toaster.

You might want to consider installing pipes that will connect the water source to the island. This allows you to place your washing sink on the island, giving it the prime position it deserves.

Since washing up will be something you’ll always be doing, the island counter is arguably the best spot to put it. here’s no place like home but in the case of this luxury detached house in the Greek village of Arachova, this holiday home is changing the rules. Under the project of the construction and operation of highlevel holiday homes by the construction company Airtec & Yampolis, founders Vassilis Karavas and Sofia Apergi collaborated with famous design studios and gave this holiday home a high level of quality and abstract style by the domestic and international standards.

This area in Arachova was chosen because it combines the unusual natural beauty and the magnificent views of the traditional village of Arachova and the Delphic landscape. It is near to the new ring road leading to the ski center and near the road to Athens, and it has an infrastructure that ensures a pleasant and comfortable stay during all seasons.

The clear lines, modern materials and the proper allocation of space are clearly, the highlights of this 2100-square-foot house. Each space has been studied separately and comprehensively, so as to serve the modern lifestyle that complements the relaxation and enjoyment of the magnificent views.

The sleek monochromatic tones; the heavy doses of natural materials like wood and stone; the color accents of the warm fabrics of the furniture; all create a stunning backdrop. This is evidently so in the main living and dining area. Sharing the same area, a pop of purple from the Elliot purple couch from Vercelloni gives the natureinspired dining setting some much needed colour.

Though awash in mainly neutrals, the dining set stands out effortlessly with its well-arranged furniture pieces.

The handsome wooden dining table sports thick, sturdy legs which go impeccably with the six dining chairs in minimalistic forms. Cutting a fine figure, a slightly curved standing lamp hovers over the dining set and serves as the perfect focal point; even without illumination.

Against it is a fitting backdrop of a kitchen with black cabinetry.

Glossy worktops in brown cap the black counters which sport a paneling design. Extending towards the divider next to the kitchen, the consistency of this streamlined pattern bestows the cooking space with a modern and elegant appeal.

BEDROOM-BATHROOM Just like the public living zones, the intimate areas are merged seamlessly as well and this allows light to bathe the space in opulence.

Just overlooking the kitchen is the loft. It is used as a guestroom and is enclosed with metal bars that allow visual contact with the main space.

This adds to the industrial style that is in sync with the wood and stone elements. Furnished with a large bed and a comfy Zoe armchair with footstool from Vercelloni in a strong orange colored fabric, the guestroom makes a cosy hideout spot from the rest of the cavernous home.

Heading upstairs, the wooden stairs are painted black and connect the two levels of the residence.

The second floor consists of three bedrooms with en suite bathrooms while the storerooms and laundry and boiler room stand alone.

The owners’ favorite room is the master bedroom. With black wood paneling and cabinets, customdesigned bed and desk furniture and special details like the minimalist

fireplace in the wall opposite the bed, it’s no wonder the occupants love their gorgeous sleeping boudoir.

That’s not all as it is connected to a completely open-concept bathroom.

With no walls, no barriers or dividers segregating the space, the entire bath suite is bathed in natural light. A hydro massage bathtub from Duravit which was designed by Philippe Starck graces the room with an imposing presence and allows its occupants to relax after skiing on the peaks of Mt. Parnassus. Adding to the tranquil setting is the animal print leather rug and large windows overlooking the garden and the village of Arachova.

At the opposite side of the room, two square porcelain sinks from TEOREMA serve as his and hers sinks. Fitted on top of a black hanging countertop, the sinks are well complemented by a large wall mirror parallel to the counter.

here is a certain minimalistic element to this HUDC maisonette designed by Distinct Identity.

Perhaps it is the white washed walls, wide open space and heavy use of glass that present this first impression.

That being said however, the home also embodies just the right mix of homely elements such as artwork and collectibles that work to keep it from feeling sterile and cold.

Most of the walls on the first floor were knocked down to create one large, open concept space that hosts the family area, living room, dining space and kitchen. This easy-breezy, open concept is further accentuated by Italian long strip homogeneous tiles and white walls, with wooden skirting around corners and walls adding a subtle contrast and warmth to the space.

The light coloured, finely textured flooring initiates the smooth, open concept brilliantly, giving this home its spacious, crisp ambience. Since the staircase sits right in the middle of the

The first area that greets guests is the family area. Open and closed storage cabinets in white laminates provide ample space to store necessary items and books. The designers kept the cabinetry cantilevered and off the floor to allow for easy cleaning and maintenance when required. cabinetry was left closed. Two modern classic armchairs present seating space for weekend reads. Designed to provide a conducive space for relaxing, playing games and reading, the family area is kept clean and barrier free so the kids have ample space to run free.

Right at the end of the open concept home, the dining area is blessed with a view of the world beyond. Originally, this area housed a balcony but the family decided to maximise the floor area even more by incorporating the balcony into the overall floor plan. The integrated area now houses the dining area. Keeping with the relaxed, crisp feel, a rough sawn finished light wood timber table is teamed with two different types of reproduction designer chairs to create a relaxed experience. A timber console and a large painting depicting lovely foliage help to lend a homely touch to the overall space.

A glass ceiling was also fixed above the dining space to maximise the double volume space and to house the pendant lamp that illuminates this area.

KITCHEN The open concept kitchen features a double galley configuration with one extended wall of cantilevered cabinets to allow for storage for kitchen and household essentials.

The kitchen shares the same design philosophy as the rest of the home, with a keen emphasis on keeping things organised and clean. A double galley kitchen provides ample preparation space for family meals.

This is complimented by a long wall of tall cabinetry that extends from the functional cooking zone to provide storage space for crockery and other essentials. It is interesting to note that most of the cabinetry is kept cantilevered to allow for easy cleaning and to ensure the space doesn’t feel boxed in with bulky units.

Strategically hung on the staircase landing wall is a large blue artwork that gives this home a dramatic but necessary burst of energy. This works incredibly well in the space, allowing view of it from almost anywhere on the first and second level.

Upstairs, a whole new atmosphere begins, with parquet flooring dictating the space for a warm, family-centric feel. More walls were broken down to allow maximum light flow throughout FEB

the double storey apartment. First off, the boundary walls that used to enclose the staircase were replaced by glass walls. This means the bedrooms on either side of the staircase domain are open concept as well. In order to create necessary privacy when required, roller blinds were put into place so the rooms can be cordoned off.

The kid’s bedroom and the next door room now share one large domain.

The family wanted the boys to be in the same room to encourage bonding time but with the added space created by the study, the boys never have to feel claustrophobic.

To maximise space in the boys’ room, bunk beds were chosen for this

room. The space under the window was also maximised with one wall of storage cabinets for all the kids’ belongings. A glass study desk and a white chair add a practical touch while still allowing the light to flow through the room easily.

A blue swing hangs in the corner for afternoon reads or leisurely naps. A sliding door was also put into place to allow the study to be used as a guest room if the need arises.

The last bedroom upstairs is the master bedroom. This is kept simple and spacious, with one long wall of full-height laminate wardrobes to keep the couple’s fashion under wraps. The master bathroom was also given a brand new lease of life and now exists as a white washed area. In order to keep the small room as spacious as possible, the bathroom vanity which features couple sinks is kept above the floor, with accent lighting underneath for a moody glow come night time.

enturing into this threebedroom condominium unit, one is greeted with lots of light – the first indication of an inviting and cosy home. But a walk around the apartment reveals that all is not as it first seems and something a lot more distinctive is going on. This brand new home for a family of four is, in fact, an eight-year-old resale apartment.

It shows no signs of wear and tear, all thanks to the successful revamp helmed by designer Cecilia Huang from Ultimate Interior Creation.

The design brief to her was straightforward: create a space to cater to each family member’s needs without compromising on aesthetics.

To achieve that, Cecilia decided to incorporate low maintenance yet luxurious-looking materials such as laminate, marble and parquet into the space. Along with an earthy colour scheme for most parts of the home, the end result is a living space brimming with modern and luxurious elements.

The main living zone is divided into two areas; a living area overlooking the boardwalk and the dining area.

Cecilia’s mastery of space configuration shows through in the clarity of both areas; with its custom-designed features and minimalist detailing.

Taking centre stage in the living area is a beautiful laminate feature wall with wood grains and a matching console.

With its linear clean-cut design, the hanging console emits a floating effect and this accentuates the soothing palette of creamy tones in this space.

Awash with dark woody tones, the dining area is graced with a dark and handsome dining set of hanging cabinets and a matching dining table.

For seating, Cecilia added a built-in booth seating and clad it with plush padded seat cushions in creamy striped patterns. Dark wallpaper plastered on the back of the booth seat further amps up the warm and cosy quality in the dining area.

Right behind the dining space is the kitchen. The homely style further extends to this cooking space, which has been thoroughly refurnished with brand new kitchen cabinets, granite worktops and homogenous floor tiles.

Taking into account of the homeowner’s cooking habits, Cecilia made sure to incorporate a great deal of storage

space for their heavy cooking demands.

Decking the walls with an L-shaped counter and overhead cabinets, the floor space is kept clear by flushing the major cooking appliances neatly against the cabinetry.

With a generous flow of natural lighting seeping into the full-height windows of the master bedroom, Cecilia decided to create a serene sleeping boudoir oozing with opulence. An earthy colour scheme of beiges and browns is put in place and is splashed across the cabinetry, walls and flooring. Swathed in neutral shades, most of the custom-built furnishings are thoughtfully designed for practical uses. The simple wall-to-ceiling timber cabinet for instance, is a versatile storage unit that comprises a wardrobe, display shelves and even a vanity table.

Instead of infusing the usual kiddy themes for the two children’s rooms, Cecilia modernised it and designed personalised spaces that highlight their individual personalities. For the son’s room, a turquoise wall defines it vividly.

To complement this strong shade, the rest of the room is kept in neutral hues so as not to overwhelm the eye.

More storage space is introduced by transforming the bay window into a shelving unit to store the son’s favourite toys and books.

For the daughter’s room, it takes on a simpler style with whitewashed walls. The all-white room is punctuated with lots of woody textures and this is prominent in the parquet flooring, study desk and matching television console.

One part of the bay window area is turned into a study corner while the other is retained with a bay window seat.

In harmony with the rest of the apartment, the tranquillity of the master bathroom and guest bathroom is achieved with soothing colours and sophisticated bathroom fittings. Not wanting the vanity area to appear overly plain, Cecilia added striking design elements by applying bright mosaic tiles on the walls and granite countertops.

Glass doors encase the shower areas plastered in ceramic wall tiles of gradual hues.

When asked about the design process and overhaul, Cecilia reveals that smooth communication and a well-planned design concept was the formula to this successful revamp. She says beaming: “It brings me joy to see a home that my clients are happy and proud to live in.”

any homeowners are clueless when it comes to renovating and decorating their homes.

Often you find that the design of a new home doesn’t really reflect the homeowner’s personality but is rather an extension of what they’ve seen in magazine or other creative sources.

While this can be good for some, this savvy homeowner chose to have it her way. The result is a new and improved double storey apartment with an eclectic vibe that the homeowner can truly appreciate.

You won’t find ostentatious feature walls or minimalist design lines in this home. Rather, a redesigned unit that is like a diamond in the rough. Its renewed sense of spirit comes from the creative ingenuity of designer Moh at Momo & Partners - who had to work closely with the homeowner to incorporate all her existing furniture and collectibles. This included integrating old grilles, oriental pieces, vintage style armchairs, modern elements and a mash up of pieces that the homeowner loves.

Parts of the original home such as the upstairs and downstairs flooring were maintained and given a fresh polish and varnish for a new lease of life. Existing built-in cabinetry under the windows in the living room were also spared the axe but given a fresh coat of paint so they shine and add an oldschool charm to the mix.

Timber plantation shutters were applied to the balcony entrance area, creating a relaxed vibe that lends an element of resort chic to the otherwise eclectic space. The new balcony space is splashed in cement screed flooring for a raw infusion that blends in effortlessly with the industrial style furniture. An old-school black and white bamboo chick was applied to the boundary of the balcony wall to keep the rain and extreme glare out while adding to the old-world charm of the home.

Since the original kitchen was dark and dingy, Moh suggested breaking down walls in the original kitchen in order to create a large open concept space. The homeowner wanted to

incorporate a laundry area within the kitchen so he suggested keeping everything under wraps. For this reason, a white washed brick structure with sliding panels was created to host the washing machine and utility area.

This neat and concealed laundry zone works well within the new open concept kitchen while still allowing plenty of natural light to pass through to the rest of the home.

An L-shaped kitchen is defined by white laminate cabinetry that affords ample storage and hosts the oven and dishwasher neatly. Since one wall was broken down, the stove top was moved to the island cook top providing a large preparation space for homecooked meals.

The dining space sits just beyond the kitchen and utility area, at the base of the staircase. Unlike most homes that try and keep all piping completely concealed, this free-spirited home has one exposed pipe coming down from the ceiling. Even though it might seem like an eyesore to some, leaving the pipe exposed somehow adds to the relaxed, unpretentious feel that this home embodies.

Since the staircase was rather dimly lit, Moh removed one staircase railing completely, while keeping the original wall-mounted banister intact.

This allows more light to penetrate and creates an open, free-flowing feel. In order to introduce even more light to the stairs and the upstairs study room, the boundary wall was knocked down and bi-fold plantation shutters put into place.

This allows ample light to penetrate the staircase area and the study perfectly.

LIVING AREA The living room has a very real feel to it and is made up of the homeowner’s existing furniture including an Oriental console, vintage arm chairs, a modern sofa and a vivid rug.

The windows in the study were also boxed in for a more exclusive, updated feel, giving the room a cosy, but relaxed atmosphere.

The master bedroom toilet also received a considerable amount of work.

The new and improved bathroom was made about two feet larger, giving the otherwise small space some breathing room. The vanity counter and sink were moved just outside the main toilet in order to create a better flow of space and give the bathroom more room. White cabinetry provides storage here and ensures the space stays neat and tidy.

Ultimately, the good looks of this humble home provide a timeless space for the homeowner to enjoy and entertain in. The combined effort of smart design aspects like the breaking down of walls to create more light and space coupled with clever consideration while incorporating the homeowner’s quirky elements is exactly what sets this home apart from the rest.

or any growing family, having ample storage space is a great necessity. With kids in the picture, clutter can multiply in a matter of days and without sufficient room to stash it away, any stylish home can look unsightly. Aware of the mess that can arise with the shortage of storage space; the family living in this three-bedroom HDB flat unit wanted a low-maintenance and spacious home.

To accede to their request, the designers from AX Image adopted a white colour scheme for the shared living and dining area. Walls were whitewashed and the floors were laid with high-gloss homogenous flooring. To let in more natural light, the boundary walls separating the kitchen from the livingdining area were hacked away. Glass sliding doors were put up to demarcate

both public zones instead and to keep heavy cooking smells at bay.

After this drastic overhaul, the living-dining space immediately looks more spacious. The designers then created a feature wall by adorning one of the walls with a large laminate partition.

Recessed lighting was laid at the back of the mocha-coloured laminate feature and this brings along a sense of lightness and warmth. To keep with the sleek modern style, the chic combo of two light-coloured leather sofas flanking a black floor rug emits understated sophistication.

As one enters into the private areas, two of the bedrooms are furnished with custom-built stow away beds. This allows occupants of the room to have a larger space when their beds are unused. Both rooms sport different design schemes as to differentiate the varying lifestyle preferences of the occupants.

One features a feminine style with matching floral touches on the cabinetry while the other emits a masculine appeal with a monochromatic colour palette.

For the master bedroom, it features a walk-in-wardrobe which is semi-enclosed. By hanging string curtains to cover the entryway and using strips of laminate to enclose the rest of the area, the walk-in-robe retains a sense of privacy and yet does not feel closed in.

tilising lots of white at home is a good idea to most people, however this basic colour can also create havoc when used in an overwhelming amount. Too much white can render the home cold and sterile and go against a relaxing home ambience. For these reasons, a white on white palette for this Mandarin Gardens apartment was discouraged by the design team from Brim

Design, and clever design features creating texture, while keeping with the desired white-based scheme, were put to use.

The entire floor was overlaid with a light coloured laminate to set the tone for the crisp home. Rather than finishing the wall with a wallpapered surface, the designer opted for a white exposed brick wall to give the home character; its rugged but white-washed appeal

To save cost, units from Ikea were used, with two shoe cabinets lining the wall as a cheaper alternative to a custom-built entertainment unit. At the same time, it allows ample storage space and blends in effortlessly with the simplistic design. The originally enclosed kitchen was converted into an open concept kitchen by removing the boundary walls. White cabinetry topped with a black worktop was then affixed to provide a contrast to the all-white setting.

In the conjoined dining area, an element of space is introduced by adding a Philippe Starck Top dining table with transparent pleated legs. The illusion of more space is further created by hiding the unsightly utility area with frosted glass doors. On

the other side, a full wall of storage space for suitcases and shoe cabinet is hidden behind classic white louvered doors.

The designers also utilised louvered doors for the wardrobe in the single bedroom. As an attached bathroom was not included

in the original floor plan, the space was reconfigured, giving the master bedroom its own ensuite, with a full wall of louvered wardrobes and black and white tiles from Ikea. They then applied warm grey and white striped wallpaper to the wall which offers subtle textured appeal.

Home to a teacher, she wanted a living space that could meet her lifestyle needs. Thus, she engaged designer John Lau from Chapter One and laid down her requirements for a modern sanctuary.

Working his magic in the living area first, John

adhered to a striking colour palette of black and white shades. This is evident in the custom-built television console and hanging shoe cabinets which are both framed by a thick white laminate frame. For the floors, he laid marble flooring to evoke a gorgeous luster and this complements the feature wall which is decked in tinted mirror finishing.

In the next area, John turned it into a study and

dining space. It is outfitted with a jet black long table with a lustrous sheen. Used for both work and dining purposes, the multi-faceted table is extendable and has a drop-leaf extension. It is exceptionally useful when the homeowner has company over as it can accommodate more guests when needed.

Moving on to the rooms, John reveals that two of the rooms were merged together to form a more spacious

Behind it lies a medley of wall-mounted cabinets with a tinted mirror finishing. This same finishing can be seen on most of the cabinetry in the room and even in the back of a specially carved out niche on the wall. Since adding two bedside tables would disrupt the visual flow of space in the room, a recess was cut out from the wall to allow the homeowner to store her bedside essentials at ease.

hoosing practicality over flashy design themes, the young couple living here wanted a home of modern sensibilities. They engaged designer Andy Tan of D’Trenzo and he crafted a cosy home for the young homeowners. Nothing is over the top here and this attributes largely to the timeless essence within this four-room HDB apartment unit.

Beginning from the foyer, a striking laminate cabinetry extends all the way into the dining area. Sharing the same space with the living area, the dining space is segregated from the other public zone with different choices of paint hues. This goes impeccably with pale homogenous floor tiles and with the laminate feature panel with gorgeous wood grain patterns. Andy also made sure not to waste any

space here by incorporating storage space into the bay window. It is lined with laminate cabinetry sporting the same wood grain patterns.

Into the kitchen, it evokes a simple yet sophisticated style with dark brown wood grain laminate counters.

Since the couple cooks regularly, white solid surface is utilised for the worktops for heavy usage and other practical reasons.

WE LOVE: Since the dining area is positioned near to the front door, the shoe cabinet acts as a divider and a privacy screen.

Out of the public areas, Andy adhered to a consistent design scheme of wooden and dark tones for the private zones as well. These recurring design elements are a perfect match since it ushers in a sense of warmth to the bedrooms. It is especially prominent in the master bedroom, as it is decked with dark tinted mirrors and a dark laminate feature wall to helm the flat screen television.

Of all the rooms, the master bedroom received the most radical overhaul.

It was merged with another room to create one large space. This made enough

room for a walk-in closet constructed of dark tinted glass. Keeping with the design scheme, the flooring is decked with laminate tiles with wood grain patterns.

This immediately sets the tone for a sophisticated resting space.

For its connecting bathroom, Andy adopted a similar colour tone and affixed dark homogenous tiles on the walls and floors.

He also chose to deck the space with laminate vanity counters sporting wood grain patterns. And just like every part of this home, even the bath suite embodies the clean-cut yet classy style.

ome to two sisters, this four-room condominium unit has a fun yet tasteful streak which spans throughout the spacious home. The pair of siblings had turned to designer Nick Pang from Ideal Design for his expertise and he has definitely created a gorgeous home for them in a matter of just six weeks. They had first approached him with

the intent of injecting lots of colours into their home and looking at the results, Nick has clearly acceded to their request.

All areas of the home are awash in different shades and Nick chose to adorn just one main colour for each area.

As seen in the living area, it is swathed in earthy tones which induce an inviting appeal.

For the dining zone, the wall is decked with three sliding panels which conceal an unsightly bomb shelter.

Recessed lighting was fitted at the back of the panels for decorative purposes. The laminate panels also sport geometric patterns which go in line with the storage units in the living area.

Keeping to the design

scheme of an anchoring colour palette, the kitchen is clad in hot red, black and white shades. The leading colour is clearly red as it is splashed generously on the cabinetry. The crimson shade is also utilised as the coloured glass backsplash.

ost people would have accepted the small stature of this HDB flat unit as it is but for designer Florence Ong from La Bonne Vie, she viewed it as a challenge to put her design ingenuity to the test. Home to a mother and son, they wanted their small home to be equipped adequately to cater for the both of them.

Since there is only one bedroom, Florence decided to create another room for the son by putting up a laminate divider within the living area.

With the space now split up into two areas, the larger area serves as the living area while the smaller space allows enough room for a single bed.

Aware that the son would require at least some storage space, Florence affixed a

raised platform to hoist the bed and incorporated hidden storage compartments within the platform. She also turned the bomb shelter located just next to the room into a compact walk-in-wardrobe.

In the public zones, Florence hacked away the boundary walls of the kitchen and it is now occupied by a bar counter which has storage compartments on both sides of the cabinetry.

The side that is nearer to the front door allows the homeowners to squirrel away their footwear while the other side is used to store cooking appliances.

The rest of the kitchen space is also maximised to the fullest as it hosts a simple dining set for two. As to add to the impression of space in this multi-purpose cooking and dining space, Florence sealed up the

Peering into the bedroom, we see gold being used as a romantic gesture in this design scheme. Cabinets and walls have been whitewashed to allow the bed area to standout as the main event of the room. The soft fluorescent lights that outline the inner perimeter of the headboard cast a warm glow over the bed. The lights also help to highlight the texture of the dark gold headboard.

Evident in the most parts of the home, the whitewashed walls are teamed with cement screed flooring. The clean, industrial chic look is further accentuated by furnishing the rooms with minimal but noteworthy furniture. One such example is the living room. The spacious area is adorned with Scandinavianstyle wooden furniture. Most of the pieces line the walls; save for an antique trunk

which is used ingeniously as a coffee table. This arrangement gives Hart’s three growing children plenty of room to run around without bumping into the furniture. On the bare walls, Hart’s works are displayed proudly and it adds colour and personality to the otherwise staid space.

Keeping to the simple yet distinctively pared down style, a walkway between the living area and dining

area is graced by personal mementos of Hart’s family.

Once again, his favourite works jazz up the plain walls.

Heading to the dining area, the dining set includes a white laminate table top which is matched with designer chairs and a long bench. With such a simple-looking dining set, this allows the iconic form of the dining chairs to show up in the best light.

Moving on to the kitchen, the first focal point that catches the eye is the stove and hood. Since the walls are decked with all-white cabinetry with orange worktops, the jet black stove and hood pop up prominently within the palecoloured setting. The major appliances are flushed neatly against the cabinetry and this evokes a larger sense of space in the kitchen.

ike many aspiring homeowners, the young couple living in this double-storey terrace house dreamed of a gorgeous home that would appeal to all their senses.

They wanted a spacious sanctuary with a sprawling garden. To materialise their dream home, they engaged the expertise of designer Yong Sen from Rezt & Relax and it was brought to life within a short timeframe.

Incorporating easy-tomaintain design elements, along with monochrome shades, Yong Sen carved a

Highlighting the generous space was important, so the staircase was positioned at the back, making the living space the first thing you see when you enter though the main door. on the second floor, Yong Sen merged two rooms into one and expanded the size of the existing bathroom.

Enclosing it with a Formica solid ply laminate feature panel which features a rotatable television feature, the spacious bath suite adopts a bold open-plan concept. Reminiscent of a resort-style bathroom, the Jacuzzi tub is hoisted on a platform lined with tiles.

To create a more relaxing space, a curved recess pattern was carved on both sides of the flooring. It was then lined with pale stone pebbles to evoke a tranquil feel.

Designer John Kow from Rhiss Interior sculpted a gorgeous living space for the two brothers living here.

The homeowners wanted their shared abode to take on a modern and classy theme and looking at the results, John clearly adhered to that. He also did not forget about the practical aspect as he executed some clever space configuration to

better allocate the space in this cavernous home.

Beginning from the openconcept living and dining zones, this space used to host a six-foot tall ceiling.

John felt that it was a waste of good space so he sealed it up to add to the second storey’s floor space. The newly reclaimed space is then used for a walk-in wardrobe at the second storey.

Venturing upstairs, one of the bedrooms exudes a five-star hotel-worthy feel.

John plastered a sprawling headboard of padded panels on the wall and this lofty feature spans upwards towards the ceiling. It is flanked by dark tinted strips of mirrors which add to its sleek appeal. On the other wall, grey wallpaper was utilised to create a masculine yet sensuous atmosphere conducive for rest and relaxation.

Two thick stainless steel strips frame this headboard and it is further flanked by strips of mirrors to evoke a larger sense of space.

eng shui is perceived as a good way to improve one’s luck but in the aspects of interior design, it often clashes with the intended style. This was the challenge issued to designer Jonathan Er from The Montella when he took up the renovation work for this threebedroom condominium unit.

The homeowners, a family of six, wanted to imbue feng shui plus sleek design details into

their family home.

To strike a perfect balance between the contemporary and feng shui elements, Jonathan swathed the entire home in a modern Victorian style. Starting from the living area, the design scheme is immediately prominent with its feature wall. Essentially white full height cabinets with a simple border design, the classy laminate feature of white wood grain patterns

Hidden storage compartments like this nifty contraption make up for the lack of space in this petite bedroom. serves as the television console as well.

Over at the dining area, it is hard not to be entranced by the spectacular feature wall which doubles up as a bookshelf and booth seating.

Instead of regular shelving, Jonathan proposed diagonal shelving units which infuse drama into the space. A sense of continuity is applied by adding streaks from the

diagonal pattern onto the booth seats. Another element that sports diagonal patterns is the specially selected base of the dining table. To break the diagonal setting, two plush dining chairs with a circular frame serve as much needed contrast.

In the master bedroom, an orange headboard sports diamond patterns similar to the dining area’s main feature.

Right next to the bed is a smart series of enclosed showcase cabinets with black tinted glass doors. Displayed proudly within it are the male homeowner’s classic timepieces.

For the other bedroom, the bed head area is clad in vintage wallpaper for a touch of grandeur. Since this bedroom is rather petite in size, he gave the room a boost in space by constructing a raised platform. Filling up the platform with lots of storage compartments, this extra level allows the occupants to squirrel away their clutter with minimal fuss.

However, choosing the right style can also be a mind-boggling experience and more so often than ever, most people don’t get it right the first time.

That’s when you need to engage the experts.

Take this intermediate terrace house for instance; the team from YCM Interior applied a gorgeous medley of marble flooring which contributes to its opulence. With two levels of space and an attic to fill, the YCM Interior team had their work cut out for them.

Thankfully, they worked hand-in-hand with their sister company Inspiration D to create a wonderful home for the homeowners.

The spacious floor plan also meant that the family living here can host many large scale parties or gatherings. To make the public zones conducive for entertaining, the team decked the open-concept dining area and kitchen with Volakas white marble flooring to induce a wider and more seamless expanse of space.

For the living area which is blessed with a high ceiling, the team dressed it with a feature wall made of gorgeous black marble to accentuate the lofty space. They even carved niches in the feature so that the homeowners can showcase their ornate collection of antiquities and ornaments. For a sleek contrast, they laid the flooring with Volakas white marble flooring. All in all, this home oozes with sophistication like no other.
