editor’s note

hot stuff As many would say, the kitchen is the heart of the home. A hot spot for friends and family to get together, the cooking space has a people-friendly sort of magnetism. It is the exact reason why some homeowners would choose to splurge on their kitchens rather than for the rest of the home. And mind you, furnishing a kitchen is quite a hefty expenditure. Just the appliances alone can cost a bomb. Though there’s no real way to cut down on your expanses (well, sloppy workmanship equals to a kitchen bound to break down in no time), you can still look into creating a cooking space that will serve you better or for a longer time. Be it going for the most durable surfaces on the market or shopping for high-tech appliances, these are just some options you could consider. With that, our Kitchen issue this month aims to guide you into building the kitchen of your dreams. From hot layouts to really cool appliances, this issue is really the A-Z of kitchens! Starting from page 22 (Month By Month), pick up tips on how to make your kitchen a more people-friendly place. In the case of choosing all the main fixtures, turn to page 30 (Elements) for popular backsplash styles and page 38 (Practical) for ideas on mixing and matching cabinetry with worktops. There’s also a cool spread of high-tech major appliances on page 34 (Focus) and handy small appliances on page 53 (Spotlight). With all these juicy content this month, we know you can’t wait to get started so we won’t keep you here any longer! Have a blast! Cheers,

A moment of folly

Make your home shine with statement home décor pieces from new concept store Gilt & Folly Text Cherell Soon

What’s the buzz?

Though it makes less impact than full-fledged furniture, home décor and art pieces are essential bits and pieces which complete the home setting. Picking the right ones to complement your home however, is a different story.

Recognising the demand for distinct home accessories, luxury furniture brand store Proof Living has expanded its wing with a debut concept store. Gilt & Folly, as it goes by, is offering a sparkling selection of statement sculptures, quirky décor items and even exotic art pieces!

Why we love it?

Though not the largest concept store around, we love that the 2000-square-foot store is like a mini showroom. With the home accessories mixed and matched together with furniture and shelving units, you can easily visualise

how the pieces would work for your home, and steal some design ideas at the same time. Best of all, simply pop by next door to its subsidiary Poltrana Frau retail store to look for ideal furniture pieces to pair with your new Gilt & Folly homeware!

Must-buys!

These décor pieces with quirky forms are sure to garner much attention on any bare console table or shelving unit! Retailing at S$395 (Leaning tower of Pisa sculpture) and S$125 (Owl art sculpture on branch).

What’s hot?

Not just limited to a smattering of renowned furniture brands, Gilt & Folly lives up to its name of whimsical, unique finds with home accessories from all over the world. There are lighting and furniture from brands Visual Comfort, Barbara Barry and Riva 1920, and artwork from

heart’s desire

With the opening of its brand new flagship store here, Hong Kong lifestyle brand Goods of Desire is all set to bring a new wave of quirky Asian culture designs to your abode Text Cherell Soon

What’s the buzz?

Why we love it?

Letting modern city dwellers in Asia stay true to their roots, it’s heartwarming to find a brand that glorifies Chinese tradition. But beyond just honouring heritage, we love how Goods of Desire cleverly (and playfully) incorporates lots of tongue-

What’s hot?

With a floor area spanning more than 6,000 square feet at The Central in Clarke Quay, expect the local flagship store to be packed with a vast selection of the brand’s signature collections including genres such as

in-cheek and controversial design ideas. For instance, there’s kitchenware sporting motifs of nostalgic Hong Kong street mailboxes; pillows and back cushions with Chinese newspaper prints and servingware with actual prints of Dim Sum on it!

its home country! Says cofounder Douglas Young on his brainchild: “Beyond the controversy and comedy of our designs, Goods of Desire is first and foremost about celebrating authentic Asian culture.”

Featuring Goods of Desire in Stanley Plaza, Hong Kong

Inspired by the rich heritage and colourful culture of Hong Kong, Goods of Desire was dreamed up by architects Douglas Young and Benjamin Lau in 1996. After gaining much recognition for its quirky modern Chinese designs, the 16-year-old brand has finally been brought in by local lifestyle and fashion retailer LifeStyle Scene Pte Ltd. To be precise, Singapore has the first flagship store outside of

Fashion, Gift Ideas, Homeware and Furniture. And there’s no compromise on quality as well. Over at Goods of Desire, genuine craftsmanship goes hand in hand with top-of-theline materials such as silk, linen and solid wood.

Must-buys!

What could bear more significance of the Chinese culture than Chinese chess? Made to resemble chess pieces, these poufs are a perfect mix of tradition and contemporary styles. Retailing separately at S$99 (cover) and S$30 (filling). Goods of Desire is located at 6 Eu Tong Sen Street,#02-08, The Central. Visit www.goodsofdesire.com for more information.

hat with the common space constraints evident in HDB flat units and even condominium apartments, it is the reason why homeowners turn to the wallless solution of open plan kitchens. With it quickly gaining favour over enclosed kitchens, this contemporary layout has strong advantages that will help maximise space, visually and functionally, to the fullest. Besides that, here are other key factors you should know to guide you towards creating a more efficient open-concept kitchen.

Design: Sky Creation

Types of open-concept styles

Openconcept kitchen YES or NO?

It’s a “YES” when: You entertain often.

Sky Creation

Say “NO” when: You don’t cook very often or your kitchen has an exhaust hood.

You prefer to cook in private.

Your kitchen is on You want to watch over your kids while you cook.

You are a neat cook and your kitchen is spotless most of the time.

You don’t have ample storage space and your kitchen always looks cluttered.

the petite side.

Your kitchen is mostly used for heavy cooking.

Semi open-concept

Design: Arc Define

The fully open-concept kitchen is one without any boundary walls to separate the cooking area from the rest of the public zones. Completely in sync with the living or dining area, the space is conjoined into one and as such, makes the entire home a seemingly bigger one since there are no individually cordoned off areas. However, it is important to note that an openconcept kitchen requires an effective design layout that should follow the golden triangle (the placement of the fridge, sink and hob that optimises work flow). This is why depending on their cooking habits, most homeowners turn to professional interior designers to conceptualise a fitting kitchen system that would work for them.

Design: Arc Define

Fully open-concept

The essence of the openconcept design is the feeling of spaciousness. This can be enhanced by having suspended bottom cabinets and top hung cabinets that do not reach all the way to the ceiling. Adding recessed lighting to the top and bottom of the cabinets will also create the illusion of floating cabinets.

Since a fully open-concept kitchen might not suit every floor plan or is to everyone’s liking, some might opt for a semi open-concept cooking space instead. By choosing a contrasting flooring and adding a glass divider to separate the kitchen from the rest of the home, a visual boundary is achieved without physically closing in the space. This way, the spacious and airy aspect of the openconcept design can still be achieved, while heavy cooking smells can be contained within the kitchen itself. JUL

Why open-concept?

Bird’s eye view

Those with kids would be familiar with the constant need to look out for them and ensure they are not getting themselves into trouble. And what more perfect way to do so than an open-concept kitchen that lets you keep an eye on the little ones while whipping up a meal? But not only that; this layout also means it’ll be easier for you to entertain guests and host parties.

Two-in-one

One main reason for an openconcept kitchen space is the effect of spaciousness it creates. It makes full use of the room’s configuration and with more space, allows for an island counter that adds extra work and storage space.

Space effect

Space is a big consideration for many homeowners today and with an openconcept layout that connects to the rest of the home; why not combine the dining function and kitchen into one? This is especially feasible for open-concept layouts that have a bar counter or an island counter. These standalone fixtures which front the kitchen can be utilised as a dining space. Featuring Bosch appliances

Smoke alert!

With the kitchen area visible to the rest of the home, ample storage is necessary to keep the mess away. A majority of homeowners would choose to have their cookware stashed away in cabinets, but an interesting way to complement your openconcept design would be to throw in open shelving solutions. Not only can it work as an interesting focal point, it keeps your cooking essentials within easy access reach.

Having an open-concept kitchen means it has to be neat. There should be sufficient, practical storage space to hide away daily items like servingware and small kitchen appliances.

Art of camouflage

Instead of cracking your head over finding a suitable kitchen style to complement the rest of your home, why not allow it to fit right into the overall design element? Whether it’s the colour or style, you can create uniformity throughout your entire home with an open-concept layout. The result would be a smooth-flowing and neat visual feast.

Open shelving

With open-concept kitchens however, comes the challenge of keeping the cooking fumes and grease away from other areas of your home. Here are two easy solutions to combat this problem:

Sectioned away

Hide away your cooktop with a glass divider, without having to forgo an open-concept layout! While the dry kitchen, washing area and cabinetry can be kept in the open, having the option of a glass sliding door will ensure fumes and grease are confined to a small area. Keep it open when not in use to maintain the fluid flow of space.

Getting the open-concept style right

Upward solution

If you don’t have the luxury of space for a separate, cordoned off cooking area, invest in a powerful exhaust hood that can remove fumes, grease and smells while you cook. This will prove useful in preventing these undesirable smells from escaping beyond the kitchen. Featuring the Gaggenau Island Ventilation Hood AI 400

t shields your kitchen wall from water and grease stains, makes cleaning a breeze and blends in stylishly with the rest of the cooking area. To put it simply, the kitchen backsplash is quite the unsung hero of the kitchen. For those who frequently cook up a storm, choosing a suitable backsplash for the kitchen should be of utmost importance. Since installing that backsplash is ultimately a long-term decision, here’s an overview of the most popular backsplash materials that will help you make an uniformed choice.

30

JUL

Tiles

Many kitchen walls in local homes such as HDB flat units already come fitted with glazed ceramic tiles. While some choose to leave it as it is, those who want a more unique tile design may consider replacing them with tiles of another colour, texture, shape or size. Go timeless with the classic subway tile, be mesmerised by the shimmer of tiny coloured glass tiles or let your backsplash take centre stage with an intricate mosaic design.

Pros With the huge variety of materials, shapes, textures and patterns that tiles offer, you will be able to create a backsplash that truly brings out your personality. Modern, country or glamourous; the design possibilities are endless. In the event that a kitchen mishap causes the tiles to chip or break, repair is simple. Unlike changing an entire stone slab or metal board, only the affected tiles are replaced. If you do opt to keep the original kitchen tiles, be glad to know

that these glazed ceramic tiles are very durable, and their non-porous surface ensures easy removal of stains. Cons Grout lines are a foolproof trap for grease, dust and dirt. Be prepared for discoloured grout lines if they are not being cleaned diligently. Price While ceramic tiles are an affordable option, installing mosaic tiles can cost anywhere from S$14 to S$180 per square feet depending on the material and workmanship. Maintenance Wipe the tiles with a damp cloth after cooking and make the extra effort to clean the grout lines with an old toothbrush regularly.

A popular backsplash option, tempered glass bears the clean look befitting of the contemporary design in many local kitchens. With the inclusion of backpainted glass to the main stable of frosted and tinted glass designs, installing a glass backsplash can be the way to add a fresh pop of sheen and colour to your kitchen. Pros Scratch-proof and non-porous, tempered glass is durable and extremely easy to maintain. All these, in addition to its toughness and high resistance to heat, make it an ideal backsplash in a kitchen that

For safety issues, we recommend getting tempered glass instead of normal glass. Christopher Lee, D’Trenzo Interior

is heavily utilised. Being naturally reflective, glass also helps to brighten up the area. Cons Besides being prone to unsightly water stains, tempered glass may suffer from cobweb shattering due to sudden changes in temperature. After cooking, give it some time to cool down before wiping it down. Price Tempered glass with a thickness of 6mm to 8mm costs S$25 to S$40 per square feet. Maintenance Wipe it with a damp cloth and soap to remove grease and food stains after cooking. If you want a squeaky clean look, follow with glass cleaner and crumpled newspaper. Natural stone slab

The beauty of natural stone is hard to miss. Although it is more usually seen in flooring, some homeowners are requesting to have its alluring grains and tones plastered on walls as well. The most common natural stones used as kitchen backsplashes are granite and marble. While both exude much elegance, granite is the more suitable option for heavy cooking, due to its high resistance to heat. Pros Because no two slabs of stone are exactly the same, be assured that the look of your natural stone backsplash is unique and one of a kind. It fits effortlessly into most kitchen types, be it contemporary, rustic or Victorian. It can also be paired with matching countertops to give off a visually seamless impression.

32

JUL

Cons The porous nature of natural stone makes it susceptible to stains. To deter stains, the surface of the stone must be sealed periodically. Marble, unlike its hard grey counterpart, is not very resistant to heat and much more fragile, making it unsuitable to be used near the stove or any heat source. Price From S$2,500 to S$4,500; prices vary with thickness, country of origin and edge treatment. Maintenance Ensure that the stone is well-sealed. With a cloth or sponge, clean the stone with a neutral pH cleaner once a week. Splatters and spills have to be wiped up immediately. Suitable for everyday cooking? If properly sealed, granite may be suitable. Marble is a definite no-go.

It’s a must for homeowners who cook daily to clean their natural stone backsplash every time after cooking. To clean, just use water and mild detergent but don’t scrub excessively as it will cause the stone to lose its shine. Grace Wong, Brim Design

While mostly used in commercial kitchens, stainless steel is slowly making an entrance into home kitchens. Its sleek metallic appearance pairs well with stainless steel kitchen appliances like the refrigerator, oven and hood. If you find it too cold and stark for your liking, there is textured stainless steel or those with different grain patterns to inject some visual interest. Pros Heat-resistant, nonporous and thus stain-resistant, it is little surprise that stainless steel is used everywhere in commercial kitchens and now in domestic households. Like glass, stainless steel brightens up the kitchen and directs light into dark corners.

Cons Its ultra-modern look may give off industrial vibes, especially if the kitchen is set in a monochrome colour scheme. Offset the cold and clinical feel by placing the stainless steel portion to just above the stove and then pair it with other finishes. It can also be easily scratched.

Solid surface is not recommended for heavy usage. It is difficult to maintain and absorbs oil. Gisella Seah, Darwin Interior

Price From S$22 to S$120 per square feet; prices vary with thickness. Maintenance Wash it with water and mild detergent. Polish dry with a soft cloth. To remove stubborn fingerprints, spray on some glass cleaner, rinse thoroughly then wipe dry with a soft cloth.

Solid surface

Solid surface is a kind of acrylic, so it is not resistant to heat and stains. It is very prone to staining if spills are not cleaned up immediately. This material also needs special attention as it scratches easily. Kelly Lim, Sky Creation

Typically used for countertops, solid surface is a synthetic material that can also be used as a backsplash. When not made into a full-height backsplash, it is still common to find solid surfaces being used to create a cove backsplash that is integrated with the solid surface countertop in one piece. Pros Available in a range of solid colours and patterns resembling wood, tile and even natural stone, you have the luxury of picking a design that best complements your kitchen. As its production process enables the solid surface to be molded into any shape as desired, the countertop and backsplash

can be made together without any joints. This seamless transition from countertop to backsplash thus holds no crevices for dirt to accumulate. Repairs can also be done without any massive renovation work. Cons It can get scratched easily and may melt if heated to over 150 degree Celsius. Price From S$30 to S$100 per foot run Maintenance Clean with soap and water. Avoid using strong chemicals that are designed to clean ovens or remove paint. Suitable for everyday cooking? No JUL

The country look might be a favoured style in many kitchens abroad but with the space constraints of our local cooking quarters, it is not a realistic choice. However, by going for something in the middle between modern and country, you can still replicate the warmth by opting for all-white cabinets topped with plywood worktops. The clean, white hues will help project a larger illusion of space while wooden accents will usher in the cosy feel reminiscent of the country style.

Featuring the Brighton kitchen showcase with countertops in plywood in laminate finish, cabinet panels in Pronorm Classicline melamine and hanging units with Blumotion; Bosch oven, ceramic induction hobs and hood; GROHE Atrio sink mixer, all available at Interior Affairs. (On countertop from left to right): Sottsass Pepper Mill, S$299; Sottsass Chili Mill, S$299, all from Alessi. Trudeau red spatula, S$24; Trudeau blue flexible spatula, S$19, all from Tangs. Acacia oval wooden plate, S$29, from Muji. Linen/cotton tea towel (on oven handle), S$9, from Lemon Zest.

Keep clutter at bay by hiding all entertainment equipment behind closed doors. Opt for sliding panels to minimise space wastage. Consider fabric panels as feature walls or as cabinet doors. It’s amazing how the fabric panels will help absorb sound and give your home better acoustic ability.

t’s always a good sign when clients re-engage their previous interior designer for a new project or to redesign their current home. It speaks volumes of the designer’s talent, attention to detail and overall service levels. It also means that there is an unspoken element of trust between the clients and designer that has compelled them to go through the entire process together all over again. For Amy Tuah, the decision to engage Adrian Heng from SpaceOne ID came naturally. He had designed this same apartment in Tampines eight years ago and when the decision came to redo the place, Amy turned to Adrian for his expertise once again. Interestingly enough, the former project was also featured in our SquareRooms magazine at that time.

58

JUL

This time though, Adrian was given complete reign of the apartment allowing him to re-engineer the dated home to the beauty that now exists. With a timeless elegance in mind, he customised most of the furniture, giving the home a uniformed sophistication with a precise attention to detail. The living room, for instance, features a two-piece sofa and ottoman which can either be used as separates or as an oversized sofa bed (as intended) for lazy stay-in weekends and extended TV time. Bright turquoise accent cushions add a colourful take while blending in effortlessly with the dusty grey-blue sofa and the custom designed arm chair. The entertainment equipment is hidden neatly behind customised upholstered sliding cabinetry for a clutter free space,

while the subtle design elements of the upholstered panels adds a classic poise. But the show stopper in this area has got to be Adrian’s signature custom designed rug with bold black and white motifs that grabs attention while anchoring the entire space perfectly. Satin fabric window panels complete the look and hide the harsh rays of the afternoon sun flawlessly.

Continuing the classic allure from the living area, the dining room walls have been given a similar treatment. A clever combination of fabric upholstered panels and clear mirrors set in black leather laminates, provides a posh backdrop while serving to open up the space as well. Adrian custom designed a large 1.3-metre round marble top dining table with an upholstered body and base to match. The generously proportioned table provides an immediate grandeur to the space, which is complemented with oversized customised chairs, for a proportional finesse. The pendant light that sits above the table provides mood lighting and the delicate hanging embellishments cast a lovely shadow above and below.

In the master bedroom, the original wardrobes were torn down in order to create a more generous bedroom space. The new wardrobe doors ensure Amy has a more tailored approach for her fashion needs, while concealing the entrance to the en-suite bathroom. This ingenious approach not only allows the space to be maximised but it ensures the room stays clutter free. The original teak flooring was also stained a dark walnut shade to provide a more conducive atmosphere that works ingeniously with the updated design language. The bed is teamed with an upholstered headboard, while floating bed side tables with 15-millimetre tempered glass legs provide an elegant addition to the space. Adrian chose French style organza blinds to dress up the windows and provide more

privacy here. He also maximised the space potential in the master bedroom by creating a chic study corner that has adequate storage for Amy’s paperwork and personal files. Sitting under one of the room windows gives this area the added advantage of a steady stream of natural light during the day. A customised rug with graphic detailing and a custom designed day bed sit elegantly at the end of the bed, completing the bedroom. The last portion of this apartment that was completely redone is the common bathroom. Dated, worn and in much need of an update, Adrian pulled out all the original fittings and surfaces, allowing him to energise the space completely. For starters, black

and white quartz tiles were used on the walls and continue up towards the shower head. This clever design trick leads the eye in and draws the attention towards the inner chamber where the light streams through. Adrian then custom made a stylish solid surface basin here, thereby creating an element of space for the otherwise smallest room in the home. Homogenous wall tiles were then added to the mix with black laminate cabinetry completing the sophisticated space and providing ample storage so the bathroom stays organised. Much thought and planning was incorporated so the bathroom has adequate storage for a clutter free environment for years to come.

A single armchair in matching fabric to the sofa completes the living room perfectly.

1

Most people are aware that the best way to achieve a clean and spacious feel is to go for an overall white colour scheme. Besides that, it also works exceptionally well when you are trying to tone down extravagant design details as seen in this European-style home.

2

Introduce subtle details of the European look with hints of gold and luxurious home décor items like mirrors, candelabras and intricately designed table lamps.

3 4

In order to create consistency throughout different areas in your home, sticking to a similar cabinetry design can serve as a unifying element.

U

nquestionably luxurious but often difficult to execute, let alone maintain, the glamourous European style is not the most obvious choice for most local homeowners. With its ornate design elements and sometimes over-the-top colours and textures, it can be overwhelming to take, especially for smaller homes. But when fused with a modern approach, the combination can be a perfect balance of sleekness and grandeur; as exemplified by this four-room HDB flat.

Home to a married couple with a soft spot for the European style, the middle-aged owners are no strangers to the theme – their previous home was constructed in the classic European style but it was more popular in the sixties. Following the trend of the contemporary style of today, the couple decided that combining the classic appeal with modern functionality would be a more practical solution. And that is exactly what designer Angela Tantry from Metaphor Studio was briefed upon.

If there’s an area which is not utilised often, consider concealing it. For instance, the designer stashed the dressing unit within the full-length wardrobe to help keep the design lingo in the bedroom visually neat and uncluttered.

KITCHEN (top left) Against the white laminate cabinets, the granite countertop creates a luxurious contrast. LIVING & DINING (opposite) Decorative wall panels with intricate mouldings are the main design feature of this European-style home.

With that, after taking close to three months with the overhaul, she transformed it into whitewashed space with a distinct European flavour. Keeping to an overall opulent white colour palette which sets the contemporary tone, the essence of the European style is evident within subtle design details and specially selected furnishings which fit the theme. As seen in the living area, the walls are dressed with decorative wall panels with mouldings which immediately infuse the space with a regal presence. To complete the look, Angela affixed mirror frames on each panel and since mirrors can project a stark and cool feel, framed paintings were added in the middle of each frame. This adds more visual interest amidst the sea of whites and reflective surfaces. Replicating the same design of wall mouldings onto the ceiling, she created a recessed ceiling feature which gives the perception of a higher ceiling. And since the homeowners prefer a fan rather than air-conditioning, a ceiling fan with reflective blades was chosen to serve as the focal point of this ceiling feature.

WALKWAY (top) The open-concept layout of the kitchen makes the hallway seem brighter and less narrow. DINING AREA (left) Decked with a painted steel fixture, the entire whitewashed wall of the dining space serves as a full-height white board.

GUESTROOM (above) The spare room is kept spacious for a multitude of purposes including studying, leisure, yoga sessions and as a guestroom. UNIQUE TOUCHES (opposite) To complement the Japanese theme, tatami flooring and cherry blossom wallpaper are incorporated.

For the dining space, Philippe Starck ghost chairs grace the oval dining table with poise. With its see-through effect, it minimises visual clutter. Interestingly, the wall next to the dining set is actually a painted steel fixture made to function like a white board so the homeowners can choose to write on it or stick on magnetic memos. Similarly catered to the couple’s needs, an open-concept kitchen layout was proposed since the homeowners would only be using it mostly for baking rather than cooking. With no heavy cooking smells or grease to contain within the cooking space, Angela laid the kitchen with two long counters standing parallel to each other. And to maintain a consistent design theme within the connecting kitchen and living and dining areas, she

utilised laminates with spray painted wood mouldings for the custom made counters and overhead cabinets. To instill the extravagance of the European style into the master bedroom, boundary walls were hacked away to merge two rooms into one spacious space. With more room to play around with, Angela put in a raised platform with a step to helm the bed. To plush it up, it is carpeted on top and then plastered with tinted mirrors at the sides to evoke a light and airy feel. Paired with timber teak flooring, the combination of soft accents and other sumptuous-looking materials pull together a luxurious yet dreamylooking sleeping boudoir. In order to maintain this serenity, Angela incorporated a dresser unit within the wardrobe so as to keep the overall look visually uncluttered. JUL

WARDROBE (opposite) Now you see it, now you don’t. The dresser unit is hidden within the wardrobe to keep the overall look visually neat.

Here comes the surprise of the home: A Japanese theme room, complete with tatami flooring and cherry blossom wallpaper. Functioning as a study area, leisure or yoga corner and also a guestroom, the multi-purpose space was designed to accommodate the homeowner’s different lifestyle needs. Apart from the splash of colour and attention from the wallpaper designs, the room is kept simple with a monochromatic palette so as not to overwhelm the area. Looking back at the transformation of this home, every step of the way has been carefully planned to achieve the intended results. From the main living zones to the sleeping quarters and right down to the spare room, the timeless essence of the design scheme and strong functionality make this home a home for keeps. JUL

I

magine spending 10 years of your life transforming the home of your dreams into a paradise of perfection. That was what business woman Laetitia Goninet did and it is indeed a journey she will never forget nor regret. Call it determination or pure passion, this French lady had her heart set and there was just no compromising in any way. It was on holiday, while taking a stroll with her husband, when Laetitia spotted this dreamy old villa set in a beautiful village not far from Marseille, South of France. Struck by its natural surroundings of green valleys, ravines and breathtaking views, they decided immediately that they wanted to live here and by a stroke of luck, they found the perfect place in a week’s time. However, their good fortune didn’t last and the house they

found looked like it was still stuck in the seventies. Think old fashioned windows, brown floor tiling everywhere, tapestry with tacky, floral patterns in the bathroom and a tired-looking swimming pool. Most people would have given up at that point but it didn’t deter Laetitia from making this house her home. She actually declared: “It will take as long as it will take but we will restore it!” LIVING AREA (top) Facing the cement chimney near the front entrance, the sand-colored shag rug, sprinkled with Laetitia’s handmade boiled wool pebble-shapped cushions, is reminscent of the nearby beaches. KITCHEN COUNTERTOP (opposite) Modifying the pendant lamps from ALINEA (alinea.fr) with Ikea lamp shades, the concrete island counter evokes less of a clinical feel and more of a warm and homely vibe.

Concrete is a durable and lowmaintenance choice of flooring but to glam it up, have it polished to show off a nice sheen.

If you are planning to infuse many strong colours on wall coverings or furnishings into your abode, unify the space by using the same flooring for all areas.

3

The advantage of having an open-concept kitchen is that you get a good vantage point of the living and dining areas. Install a bar counter or island counter that faces these public zones to benefit from this advantage.

JUL

75

sp a c es

So moving ahead firmly with her decision, plans were made to redefine the whole house. Some boundary walls were hacked away; the lounge area and kitchen space were reconfigured and swapped places. With the overhaul moving smoothly, Laetitia’s reno plans suddenly came to halt when she could not find anyone to do up her floors with polished concrete. Eventually, through a magazine article, she discovered artist and architect Marylène Tortora from Marseille (www. ouillecapique.fr). After a phone call to Marylène, she agreed to coat and polish Laetitia’s concrete floors.

76

JUL

While her father took care of the framework and concrete floors; Marylène, the coating and polishing of all the concrete surfaces such as floors, kitchen, fireplace and bathroom, Laetitia conceptualised a balanced mix of styles for various areas all unified by the same concrete flooring. The layout of the rooms reflects on Laetitia’s gregarious nature and gives this house a friendly and sociable vibe. Case in point: the open-concept kitchen extends into the living room and dining room. From where the kitchen’s concrete island counter is, there is a clear overview of the living room and dining

room even when one is busy preparing food on it. Laetitia exclaims: “It’s really nice to cook while chatting with my guests. It is a house where we take real pleasure in entertaining and receiving people. bathes the entire space in splendour. Vivid and bright, almost all of the living spaces are showered in constant light. Adding to that is lofty windows that offer magnificent views of the surrounding nature. With nature and lots of daylight on her side, Laetitia furnished her home with cushions, lamps, sculptures and paintings made with her own two hands. Taking up courses in painting, drawing and sewing, the determined soul gave up her business career to devote all her energies to her home and her family. It is a lengthy but selfdisovery type of endeavour, to fuel a personalised home created little by

little, depending on her travels, findings and desires. Renovated from scratch and then filled with handmade creations such as copper tube lamps, pebbleshaped cushions and sculptures, the amount of love and effort invested wholeheartedly into this home is truly inspirational. Though it took a decade and various sacrifices for Laetitia to mould it into the home of her wildest dreams, it is time well spent for her. Summing it up succinctly, she says: “I cannot imagine living anywhere else. I have found my home, my haven of peace and this is where I want to see my children grow up.” JUL

N

o one likes to live in a cluttered, over complicated space. It makes coming home from a long day at work a chore in itself and is just not good for the soul. But how can you create a sense of calm in your home if you’re one of those individuals with a penchant for collecting things. Whether it’s designer toys, plush figurines or books, the ideal solution would be to create an abode that has plenty of prearranged storage and display space to accommodate your hobby. Keeping this in mind, the savvy homeowners of this Bishan flat realised that in order to accommodate their collectibles, the entire design and build home would have to be custom designed for this purpose. The couple knew that they wanted a modern concept that would stand the test of time so the design team from Distinct Identity went to work quickly to recreate their space. Putting an emphasis on crisp, clean lines, the team focused on creating a minimalist inspired home with subtle design details. Realising that many

minimalist homes lack personality and can be sparse and feel uninhabited, the designers chose to create interest by playing with shapes and design accents. On top of that, personalised custom designed cabinetry was created to accommodate the wife’s vast array of collectibles without allowing the house to feel cluttered. The minimalist scheme is first evidenced in the living room. The couple didn’t want anything too bulky so the design team came up with a crisp white feature wall plus storage area to house the TV and speakers. High gloss white laminates dominate the space, while subtle design strips and panels add just the right amount of pizzazz so the space is never boring. In order not to make the unit feel too boxy, the designers curved off the edges of the unit for a sleek, polished look. he young couple that calls this fourroom condominium unit home favoured something clean and modern looking, a task that the designers from Brim Design acceded to with much aplomb. Having worked with the pair previously, they are attuned to their preferences, and kept to a simplistic style by going for whitewashed walls and lightwood elements

throughout the humble abode. For fear of a resulting gloomy space, the designers were told to opt for white furniture as much as possible. Keeping to the original flooring of beige marble tiles, they ensured the living area looked pristine and bright, but not monotonous, with the clever addition of a light brown shag rug. Just behind the living room, the dining area is decorated

minimally, but features a large custom-made mirror frame hanging against the wall. Although originally added for Feng Shui purposes, it also adds a touch of personality to the previously flat and bare space. This perfectly illustrates how a strong focal point like a simple mirror can easily substitute an entire feature wall. This three-year resale condominium unit needed no major renovations and took about two months to

complete. During this time, they added a wooden sliding divider to the entrance of the balcony, as requested by the homeowners, who wanted more privacy. The spacious balcony stretches across the length of the main living zones, and the sliding divider is an innovative addition that lets in some filtered sunlight, whether one is enjoying a meal in the austere dining room, or lounging on the plush ivory leather sofa in the adjoined living area.

As the study was an important factor for the couple when choosing their new home, the homeowners made it clear that they wanted a design that was not run of the mill. Understanding their needs, the designers went with a minimalistic approach and created a hanging concept work counter that takes up the length of the room. With minimal furniture and a countertop that is flushed against the window wall, not

only is it a smart space-saving technique; it also gives the area a clean and updated appearance. Last but not least, with its pristine walls and simple furnishings, the sleeping quarters evoke a similar aesthetic as the rest of the house. One feature that stands out is the wood-based white strip panel that tucks away the bathroom from sight, providing an element of surprise to an otherwise customary living space.

With their creative know-how, the designers at Brim Design pride themselves on their flair for practical, everyday ideas and a keen eye for design trends. This boutique interior firm caters to residential and commercial projects of all kinds to suit most budgets. Another key element that accentuates its modernity is the application of cove lighting, which is tucked within the recesses of the ceiling and emits a soothing appeal throughout the home. Not only does the lighting give the space a sophisticated and cosy atmosphere, it highlights the clean-cut style of the modern home.

Clutter is further done away with in the master bedroom by removing unnecessary furniture pieces such as bedside tables. Also, sticking to the bare essentials such as a mattress without a bed frame gives the impression of a bigger sleeping boudoir. One striking element in the room is the custom-made feature wall

which is constructed out of Stucco. This decorative plaster gives a unique texture to the wall, and adds a distinctive splash of colour with its different variations of grey. The kitchen adopts a simple, classic black and white theme consistent with the neutral colour scheme evident in the rest of the home. The glossy jet black granite countertop is

balanced out by the white wooden cabinetry, which is dashed with hints of navy blue, further emphasising the modern and trendy theme. In the study room, shelves align the walls to house the homeowners’ countless number of books. Storage space is maximised by using the entire floor to ceiling area, allowing the rest of the room to appear more spacious.

ther than adhering to certain designspecific requests due to Feng Shui concerns in this home, designer Joseline Sim from Darwin Interior was given the freedom by the homeowners to play around with textures, colours and furnishing choices. She was also tasked to ensure that the home was outfitted with ample storage space for the homeowners’ needs.

Although this was the first major renovation work that the place had seen in years, she transformed the space into a warm and cosy apartment in just six weeks. First on the agenda was stripping the home of its dated furniture. Then, to meet the increasing needs of the homeowners who enjoyed collecting items from their numerous trips abroad. She incorporated a multitude of cabinets and display counters

into the overall design scheme to control the clutter whilst retaining a clean and modern appearance. The main living zone is swathed with neutral tones in an earthy colour scheme of browns and creams to complement the existing granite flooring. To add visual interest to the living room, she lined the wall behind the flat screen television with textured medium-density fibreboard (MDF) panels with an ivory spray paint finish. Orange LED lighting also highlights each row of the family’s exquisite liquor collection. Moving to the dining area, Joseline utilised a smart storage solution by using a cabinet to not only maximise space, but also serve as a divider from the living area. By putting up warm floral wallpaper that adds to the inviting ambience of the place, a feature wall defines the dining area.

Still keeping to the highly functional style of the living and dining rooms, the private quarters evoke a sense of individuality to suit and complement the lifestyle of the occupants of each room. The key feature of the adult son’s bedroom is the walk-in wardrobe. Taking up a third of the room, it is a practical solution for his growing collection of ties and clothes. Unlike the masculine and calming brown-and-grey combo used in the previous room, Joseline toyed with a vibrant orange to play up the youthful charm of the grandchildren’s room. A row of cabinets lined with laminate sporting an intriguing 3D textured effect laminate is connected to the built-in bed. Serving as the side table, the room is also dressed with a study desk and hanging cabinets of the same design and material for a uniformed take.

Whether you're looking for a simple design upheaval, or a complete home makeover, Darwin Interior has the expertise to meet your needs. Their designs are always "human-oriented", emphasising their innovative ways to catering creative designs to fit your lifestyle. So when the design team at Fuse Concept was tasked with the transformation of a HDB apartment unit into a vintage-inspired abode with an industrial appeal, they took it upon themselves to not only create a living space, but also a time capsule into the past. After a fervent exchange with the homeowners on their requirements and wants, the design team decided to make the most of the four-bedroom apartment’s space and knocked down the living and dining room walls to create an open plan area. aving a hard time deciding on the perfect kitchen layout for your cooking space? With a lot to consider such as the available kitchen space, your cooking habits and how to segregate your kitchen efficiently from the rest of other public zones, it’s something best left for the experts to decide. That was what the homeowners of these four kitchens had in mind when they engaged i-Bridge to conceptualise and then materialise their dream kitchens. The first, the most striking of the lot, is definitely the kitchen with a black and yellow colour theme. Fitted with a yellow coloured glass backsplash, the cooking quarters dazzles with modernity. To advocate the abundance of natural lighting streaming through the windows, the walls are lined with hi-gloss laminate

counters in pristine white. Adding to the expanse of the light flow is the application of granite worktops which is tough enough to withstand the daily grind of heavy cooking sessions. Moving to another kitchen which is decked in a purple glass backsplash, the walls are painted in a similar shade to complete the picture. Since the kitchen is only used for light cooking, the designers chose a sleeker design scheme with glass shelves flanking the walls. More glass elements are utilised by demarcating the kitchen from the rest of the home with a glass sliding door. This also helps to contain the cooking smells only in the kitchen.

Though this next openconcept kitchen does not have a glass sliding door to keep the cooking smells away from the rest of other zones, a cooking hood helps to minimise the flow. Besides the open plan layout, the use of light-coloured solid surface worktops and laminate cabinets adds the impression of a more spacious kitchen. For a hint of colour contrast, dark coloured glass backing is fitted on the wall. In the last kitchen, sleek black wall tiles paired with glossy coloured glass backing create a stylish cooking space. White solid surface worktops and acrylic cabinets line the walls and make up a sleek monochromatic colour scheme.

f you think pink is too feminine a colour for a young couple’s start-up home, think again. Though it is not advisable to overwhelm your entire home with a fullon pink theme, a clever mix of contrasting colours can provide a good balance and transform your space into a stylish sanctuary. Located in Punggol, this four-room HDB premium flat home to a young couple strikes the perfect balance.

JUL

Their request seemed simple enough; they wanted a cheerful home that is bright, spacious and cosy. But, the homeowner also wanted her favourite pink colour thrown into the mix. While most designers would stick with a white theme to achieve a spacious and bright space, designer Danny Fong from Ideal Design took up the challenge of working in a pink hue into the home.

Understanding what the homeowners needed, Daphne first worked her magic in the connecting living and dining zone. Daphne executed a complete overhaul. She overlaid the existing tiles with homogenous tiles in soothing shades of brown. his apartment unit’s irregular floor plan might pose as a hindrance to some designers; but the design team from Mofasis saw it as a refreshing challenge to unleash their creativity. With odd-shaped corners sited in certain areas of the home, the talented team managed to

turn every awkward corner into a functional and stunning space. Starting from the dry and wet kitchens, the designers created a breezy and modern cooking arena where the homeowners, a young swanky family, could whip up a storm. A simple long counter in hi-gloss white is

stationed in the dry kitchen and is accompanied by a lower-tiered dining table. This arrangement facilitates the easy serving of piping hot food from the wet kitchen or baked creations from the dry kitchen. Over at the other side, the designers affixed kitchen counters and overhead hanging cabinets on the wall. The overall dry kitchen is also kept neat and clean by flushing the major kitchen appliances against the white cabinetry. And as to keep up the clean-cut and modern style of the space, the dry kitchen is demarcated from the wet kitchen with the sleek application of a glass divider. For the chill-out and study space, the designers decided to enclose the area with glass dividers as well. This allowed light to stream through the glass and flood the entire room with natural light and a soothing feel. Since the room encompassed an oddshaped corner, the designers balanced that off by filling up

Adding to that serenity are folding doors which quietly tuck away the ensuite bathroom.

or this young family, their three-bedroom home in Woodlands is a clever display of their style preferences. Like many urbanites, their design brief was created out of a simple concept: an elegant space swathed in monochrome colours. As the colour scheme chosen is heavily drawn on in the interior design world, designer Darren Lim from Plush Living chose to update the theme with a whimsical mix of patterns and textures.

The moment you step inside the 1109-square-foot home, there is little doubt that this is the living space of a family with exquisite tastes. Punctuated with black and white furniture pieces, the living, dining and kitchen areas are combined into an openconcept layout – a choice that is likely to make storage easier in view of the apartment’s limited floor space. An eye-catching silver cushioned wall decks one side of the living area; housing their flat screen tube

box and black glass TV console. Cream homogenous tiles line the floors and are the only feature in the space that deviates from the colour scheme. At the other side of the living area, a black and white six-seater dining set is the prime spot where guests gather for the family’s dinner parties. Instead of dark wallpaper, tinted glass walls and clear mirrors bearing concealed storage space are employed to give the apartment an illusion of light and space. And while most of the walls are clad in dark wallpaper, the kitchen is a refreshing departure with its stark metallic cabinets, pale solid wood surfaces and stainless steel fixtures. The modern furniture pieces which were carefully

selected by Darren are sure to give all who enter the space something to talk about. In a classic palette of silver and black, the master bedroom’s walls and furniture contrast greatly with its parquet floors. As Darren prefers not to overwhelm the room with too much solid black, he dressed a bare wall in dark floral wallpaper. A masculine yet sophisticated floor-to-ceiling black PVC cushioned headboard stands at the opposite end, with a matching bay window settee. To clear the room of excess storage furniture, the designer selected a storage bed for all of the couple’s needs.

T

o call this three-bedroom condominium apartment in Newton a typical bachelor’s pad is an understatement. The owner – a professional – is a repeat client of the design team from Renozone and he wanted something modern with a personal touch. Taking that into account, the designer embarked on a five-week journey to

construct a home that would fit his requirements. The result? Splashed in a largely monochromic colour theme, the bachelor’s pad is littered with idiosyncratic designer pieces that reflect the owner’s exquisite taste. Given that the apartment caters for only one, the owner had the freedom of utilising the space as he desires. The living and dining areas were combined into

one expansive space, with marble floor tiles expanding its way into the corridors of the sleeping quarters. The walls were painted dark grey to match the lightweight dark curtains of the floor-to-ceiling windows. A pair of designer stools and table stand against the window, offering a soothing spot for the owner to indulge in the stunning view of the cityscape. To match, several designer

pieces such as a leather sofa, an iconic armchair, a cowhide rug and eye-catching stainless steel lighting were carefully selected by the designer and the homeowner. To further reflect the owner’s taste for the unconventional, the design team chose a sophisticated six-seater dining set for the

dining space. Mirrors were added on the walls, in place of paint, to create the illusion of space in the corner. Just opposite the dining area is the kitchen. As the prime location to host many dinner parties, the kitchen adopts the colour scheme of the rest of the apartment with its black homogenous flooring

and white laminate cabinets. A custom-designed wine cabinet is installed below the sink to house the owner’s vast collection. Like all yuppies, the owner amassed a huge collection of personal accessories and clothing. Merging two bedrooms into one, the design team created a walk-

in-closet in the master bedroom which is linked to the attached bathroom. The walk-in ensuite features stainless steel and laminate racks separated by glass panels. The dark parquet boards which line the bedroom floors were replaced by grey homogenous tiles and matching walls in the bathroom.

hough the homeowners of this four-room HDB flat unit requested for a low-maintenance home, designer Bernard Ling from Rezt & Relax did not think of compromising on the aesthetics just to fulfill that. In fact, he created a chic family haven for the family of four living here and all it took was a fuss-free design theme to hold everything together.

Starting from the living area, he decked the floors with polished homogenous tiles to set off a simple yet sophisticated vibe. One of the walls is affixed with a large hanging TV console in glossy white which fills most of that wall. To facilitate easy cleaning, he left the base of the console empty so that homeowners could clean the floor space beneath it. On top, a simple false ceiling feature

was mounted and adorned with spotlights and cove lighting to project a warm, soothing glow. For the dining area which is a picture of contemporary chic, it is plastered with laminate panels sporting an oxidised metal pattern. Serving as the feature wall and a strong contrast against the mostly whitewashed home, Bernard

installed bench seating padded with PVC cushions to inject a cosy feel. At the side of the wall lies a glass sliding door which leads to the cooking quarters. To ensure the homeowners do not knock onto it accidentally, he opted for frosted glass and dressed it up with streaks of modernlooking decals. The dark colour theme

of the dining space is evident in the master bedroom as well. Since the room is on the petite side, Bernard decided that a consistent colour and design scheme would be less overwhelming on the whole. First, he put in a full-height wardrobe with sliding doors bearing textured crocodile skin-like motifs. To ensure that the rest of

the room followed a similar design, he created a feature wall made of laminate panels in monochromatic shades and placed it at the back of the headboard. Arranging it in a modern pattern of contrasting shades and then finishing it off with a dark tinted mirror at the side, the feature wall complements the sliding wardrobe to a tee.

Started in 2001, Rezt & Relax is the brainchild of design partners Wilson Teh and John Foo. Their portfolio includes a wide spectrum of residential and commercial projects with clients such as Mayer, Jean Yip, Sticky Rice, as well as hotel projects in Dubai. The team at Rezt & Relax believes in offering creative design solutions and trend forecasts to help owners to simply relax and unwind in the comfort of their homes.

living area, the floor is lined with glossy homogenous flooring while one of the walls is dressed with a laminate panel bearing marble grain patterns. The rest of the wall is plastered with strips of tinted brown mirrors which, together with the hi-sheen flooring, add to the impression of space. The mix of matching furniture pieces in the living area were personally selected by John and so is most of the furnishings within the home. In the dining area, John’s strong eye in aesthetics prevails in the dining set which was also chosen by him. The marble tabletop echoes the main design feature of the marble feature wall in the living area. Also consistent with the design theme is the application of fulllength clear mirrors lined on the dining area’s wall to double the impression of space.

Rhiss Interior Pte Ltd

For the private areas, here was where John really worked his magic in maximising every inch of space. In the son’s bedroom, he worked in a movable divider to separate the walk-in-wardrobe from the main sleeping quarters. It allows the male occupant to move the entire divider to close off the entire wardrobe when he needs more floor space. This is especially useful when he has company as he will need more space to fit in an extra mattress. In the daughter’s room, a platform was installed to host the bed and to conceal plenty of hidden storage compartments as well. Outfitted with pull-out drawers at the side and lift-up boards to cover the concealed storage space within the base, this multi-purpose platform helps to maintain a clutter-free environment.

hen you visit Bella Nails salon, “serenity” is really the best word to describe the interior. It’s obvious that the salon was designed as a quiet sanctuary for customers who are here for a pampering session. Prior to renovation, the owners have always favoured an understated yet feminine style – a look that can only be pulled off with

exquisite workmanship and an attention to details. They soon found designer Lily Gimfil from The Montella, who shared their vision on what they were looking for. From the onset, what was less obvious was the thoughtfully directed interior space. hues and punctuated with splashes of maroon and purple. A shoe cabinet crafted from laminate with wood grains which sits in the entrance is the first feature that greets customers. A square-shaped display panel was then constructed in the hanging wall cabinet near the entrance; giving the owners of the retail space a spot for aromatherapy candles – an essential addition to their wellness concept.

To separate the entrance from the pedicure station, two dividers with circular patterns were purchased from Series Supply and fixed on raised platforms. Paired with organza curtains that isolate each armchair, they give customers some privacy while they are attended to by trained manicurists. Sitting on

the platform are also customdesigned laminate wash basins in the same colour theme as the rest of the space. Constructed out of acrylic shelves and mirrors, a display unit lines one end of the wall while a beige wallpapered feature wall decks the other end. Besides providing entertainment

3M raises the bar of optimum living with two must-have additions for your home

If you think you have everything you need at home, here are two products from 3M that might change your mind. Renowned for its ingenious and practical selection of home solutions, 3M has done it again with its window films and water filter systems which contribute to a more wholesome level of living in your home. Though these may seem as just common household wares that your home can do without, you will most likely be impressed by its multitude of useful features. For starters, as the inventor of window films back in 1966, no one does it better than 3M with its comprehensive range of sun control films. Besides blocking glare and up to 99.9 percent of the UV radiation that streams from your windows to your living space, it prevents your furnishings, flooring, artwork and photos from fading. Aside from that, these films reject solar heat which means your home will not heat up as easily. That way, you won’t turn to your air-conditioner and fan to beat the heat that much and this in turn, helps you to conserve energy at home.

148

JUL

Though Singapore generally has a clean supply of tap water, the 3MTM Water Filter ups the benchmark by providing cleaner, clearer and better tasting water. It can eliminate more than 85 percent of particles that are 160 times finer than a human hair. Furthermore, it enhances the taste of water by removing undesirable chemicals such as selected volatile organic chemicals. And when it’s time for a filter change, the LED monitoring device has a quick change design which enables a filter change in seconds with an easy twist. Plus, with its NSF certified 3MTM Water Filter system, it is a quality product that you can trust. Tested and certified by the NSF organisation, it meets the requirements of strict public health standards. Enjoy all-in-one wash-up convenience with Wasser Bath’s sinks Most people think of doing the dishes as a menial chore but when you have an adept sink with the right tools, it will lighten the load. Take Wasser Bath’s ixiss sink package for instance. This German brand sink is equipped with a cool array of matching accessories that will definitely make washing-up less of an arduous task. Made of stainless steel, the drop-in/top-mount sink is complemented with other stainless steel add-ons such as a soap dispenser, waste basket, soap tray and dish drainer. Not only does it make the entire sink look more aesthetically pleasing and complete, each add-on boasts its own function. The soap dispenser for instance, is a handy touch at the side where you can dole out dishwashing liquid easily without making a mess. Equally convenient is the refillable bottle where you simply screw out the top to replenish the washing liquid.

Be equally impressed by the waste basket as it traps waste into a deep basket which can be cleared easily. Even with a full load, the basket has a big clearance hole which allows the water to drain smoothly as to prevent clogs. On the other side of the sink, the soap tray gives you access to place dishwashing essentials like dishwashing liquid bottles and sponges. Also helpful is the dish tray, a removable basket where you can hang out clean dishes to dry or use it to wash vegetables and fruits. Available with a one-year warranty, this sink set’s functionality is made even more prominent with its universal sink mixer hole which suits all types of mixers. It is definitely a dream set for those who want convenience at their fingertips in the kitchen. just dazzling

With the application of luxurious stones, this spacious doublestorey project by YCM Consultancy and Construction Pte Ltd has undergone quite a spectacular transformation

From a single-storey semi-detached house to a spacious double-storey home with an attic and a swimming pool, this family home is the masterpiece of YCM Consultancy and Construction Pte Ltd. Joining hands with its subsidiary company YCM Interior (Singapore) Pte Ltd whom provided the stones and sanitary wares, YCM Consultancy and Construction was in charge of the entire design and build. For the roomy 3700-square-foot house, the YCM team created seven rooms and four bathrooms in total. There’s a spacious master bedroom which is outfitted with an extensive walk-in wardrobe. Connected to the sleeping quarters as well is a bath suite which is decked in high quality KLM Beige marble and Dark Emperador marble. By adding in these exquisitelooking marble pieces, the entire bathroom is immediately bathed in grandeur. It elevates the aesthetics of the master bath suite and with its lustrous surface, helps to direct more natural light to widen the spacious space further. Venturing downstairs where the public zones reside, the same concept of luxurious materials has been applied in the living, dining and kitchen areas. Using only one consistent type of flooring or Ottoman marble to deck the floors, this maintains a seamless flow of design and space within these areas. Furthermore, with the kitchen having an open plan configuration, the absence

of walls helps to advocate the stream of light and space. With all the marble flooring in place, the entire first level of the home oozes with sublime sophistication. Thanks to the meticulous selection of beautiful materials by YCM Consultancy and Construction Pte Ltd and YCM Interior (Singapore) Pte Ltd, they have achieved the intended results which make this doublestorey house shine with opulence.
