JUST OVER a year ago, in this same magazine, we commented that “the true value and expertise of your insurer is best measured when there is a problem”. Well, nobody could have forecast the perfect storm of a global pandemic and a hardening market that we’ve faced over the past year. In our industry of managing and mitigating risk, it’s our job to expect the unexpected, and we’re pleased to say that, as a business, our COVID response was a fairly seamless transition.
“We already had a number of sta set up with fl exible working arrangements, so this, along with a robust business continuity plan, meant we had the framework in place to ‘fl ick the switch’ when COVID hit,” says Ross Webster, MECON’s general manager. “This ensured that, despite some minor hiccups, we were able to maintain our high standard of service to our trusted business partners.
“The construction industry has been less impacted by the pandemic than many. This meant that business continued to fl ow in through the (digital) door for us. In fact, government subsidies, the hardening market and the withdrawal of some key markets in our space meant that workloads have increased dramatically. This has meant that, rather than innovate or diversify our product range, we’ve focused on our core business, supporting the sector when it was most required.
“MECON’s investment in our people, in training and education, and in our unique start-to-fi nish claims management leaves the business well positioned for whatever the year ahead may bring. We will continue to focus on our core products. Sta training and broker education will be a key priority for us to ensure we continue to collectively fi nd the best solution for our clients.”
Now in its 18th year, MECON Insurance has been recognised for its business achievements and ethics across coverage, service levels and claims. In 2020, for the fi fth year in a row, MECON was the Brokers’ Pick for construction in Insurance Business’ Brokers on Underwriting Agencies survey.

Additionally, MECON’s claims administration has been recognised by LMI ClaimsComparison, achieving a 5-star claims service rating for construction and 5 stars for contractors’ plant, based on speed, proactiveness, accuracy and fairness. We were also named as a fi nalist for the 2018 and 2019 Mansfi eld Awards in the specialist category.

I’m writing in an e ort to extend our gratitude for the e orts of MECON over the past 30-odd months.
