The Key School is founded upon the conviction that children are innately curious about themselves and the world; they want to learn, they want to discover, and they want to create. Our mission is to nourish and guide this natural exuberance, energy, and delight in the search for meaning, so that each student embraces lifelong learning and develops into an informed, thoughtful, and constructive member of society. Taken from the Key School Mission Statement as adopted by the Board of Trustees on April 30, 2014.

Dear Members of the Key School Community, This year I have the opportunity to look at Key through the lens of both the Head of School and a PAL, which is our acronym for parents of alumni/ae. The experience Key provides its students is remarkable, and, in large part, the success of our program hinges on the generosity of our community. With my daughters off to college, I see how the Key experience has positioned them to not only excel, but also embrace their next learning experience with confidence and enthusiasm. I am humbled and deeply appreciative of the philanthropic support and spirit of volunteerism our community demonstrated this year. The impact it has on our students is immeasurable. The Annual Fund provides approximately 4% of our overall operating revenue, making those funds essential to school operations. Exceeding our budgeted Annual Fund goal in 20182019 enabled the School to delve more deeply into professional development activities for our faculty, and positioned Key to explore new initiatives on a faster timetable than planned. The volunteer efforts of our Parents’ Association provided new opportunities for us to build our sense of community and, as we have done every year in recent memory, we exceeded our budgeted fundraising expectations for the Annapolis Book Festival. The hard work of the Parents’ Association resulted in a gift to the School totaling $128,612. Finally, the continued philanthropic support of our efforts at Fusco Athletic Park have positioned this amazing venue to serve our students for generations to come. The generosity shown by our community for this campus enhancement has positioned us well to begin the exciting work of making elements of Key’s new Campus Master Plan a reality on the main campus. Overall, Key raised nearly 1.5 million dollars during the 20182019 year. On behalf of the faculty, staff and administration, I want to thank all of those who helped Key with their philanthropic gift. If not for your support, Key would not be the wonderful place of learning it is. Thank you for supporting the School, but most importantly, thank you for supporting the children who attend it. Dear Key School Friends, I would like to offer my appreciation for the incredible philanthropic and volunteer support, and overall efforts of our faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and students this year. As a result of this support, our School is well-positioned for continued success. In addition to exceeding our goals for the Annual Fund, Endowment, Annapolis Book Festival and Parents’ Association; we continued the work needed to keep Key at the forefront of independent schools. We are thrilled to have seen Fusco Athletic Park open this past spring. It was a special experience to finally see our teams playing at this state-of-the-art facility. This is the largest capital project in the School’s history and will be an enduring legacy for generations. We completed a Campus Master Plan this year, resulting in an exciting view of what future campus improvements might look like. This was an exhaustive effort across all of our constituencies, led by the architectural firm of Hord, Coplan & Macht. The plan will serve as a roadmap for campus utilization and future capital projects. We took steps to update our 2020 Strategic Plan to guide us in the many decisions required to execute on our mission. The process is being led by the Long Range Planning Committee of the Board of Trustees and is expected to be completed in the next year. A central element of this plan is a capital campaign for an arts and innovation center. This long-awaited project will provide the first-class facility needed to support our program. A feasibility study has been completed and next steps are being developed. It has been my pleasure, again this year, to lead your Board of Trustees. They continue to be forward-thinking in their efforts to insure the School’s sustainability. I want to thank our retiring trustees, Liz Filter, James Hayes and Steve Stavrou for their generous support and service. I am pleased to welcome new trustees, Tom Baum, Julius Clark, Jared Littman, and Sejal Mattu; and look forward to their participation. THERE’S JUST SOMETHING ABOUT KEY... It might be the combination of our strong academic program, focus on collaboration, and commitment to discovery in all its forms. It could be that we encourage our students, from their first day at Key, to be active learners, to develop and refine their academic and character skills, and to navigate every challenge with a sense of confidence and excitement. But of course, it’s not just one thing that makes Key special; in fact, it’s the melding of all these things and more that creates the Key experience. Every student who attends Key makes it their own. Key’s community of donors makes it all possible and their motivations for giving go beyond a simple budget equation. The Key community gives because they are our partners in the education of our students—because they share Key’s vision for education and for our students’ futures and wish to invest in both. Gifts to Key support each of our students as well as their shared journey here. Schools are indeed shared journeys for both students, families, faculty and staff, and the community. The generosity of our donors over the 2018-2019 school year has helped Key to remain the remarkable institution that it is. Each year we pause to mark our milestones—to celebrate the accomplishments of our students and faculty, to reflect and to acknowledge the promises we have made to future Obezags.
