Key School Report on Philanthropy 2020-2021

OUR MISSION Key School is founded upon the conviction that children are innately curious about themselves and the world; they want to learn, they want to discover, and they want to create. Our mission is to nourish and guide this natural exuberance, energy, and delight in the search for meaning, so that each student embraces lifelong learning and develops into an informed, thoughtful, and constructive member of society. With these beliefs and objectives in mind, we commit to: Provide a dynamic education that demands rigor, intellectual independence, creativity, interdisciplinary thought, and openness to differing perspectives through academic and co-curricular programs that teach students experientially, as active participants in the learning process. Guide and support students in their efforts to mature intellectually, socially, and emotionally; to make decisions for themselves and take responsibility for those decisions; to address their individual learning needs; and to broaden and deepen their talents and interests. Prepare students with the collaborative and competitive abilities and the communication and thinking skills they need to effectively undertake challenges and assume responsibilities in an interconnected, complex world. Cultivate a community in which teaching and learning are lifelong endeavors for all, pursued through reflection, private study, and communal engagement. Sustain an ethical school culture that respects the dignity of every human being, recognizes that liberty must be balanced by responsibility and individual action by the needs of others, and stresses to all members of a diverse school community the importance of trust, mutual respect, compassion, and service to others. Adopted by the Board of Trustees on April 30, 2014.

Dear Members of the Key School Community, During challenging times, the bonds of a community are tested. Challenging times are when the levels of strength, compassion, empathy, and generosity are there for all to see. This past year Key demonstrated what a truly amazing community it is. While the default of life at Key during the 2020-2021 academic year was framed by the impact of COVID-19, our students experienced a learning environment that was joyful, engaging and had countless moments of success and celebration. Our First School and Lower School students were positioned by mid-October to be on campus five days a week, and upon returning from Spring Break, their Middle and Upper School classmates were also able to be here every day. The countless hours of planning and hard work undertaken by my colleagues on the senior administrative team and the faculty and staff, was supported by our Board of Trustees and our remarkable parent body, which exhibited the patience and partnership that is the envy of other institutions. Key School’s ability to raise $793,224, the highest Annual Fund amount in the history of the school, at a time when we required significant, unbudgeted resources to create a safe environment for our students, is a testament to your investment in their success. The Annual Fund, be it restricted or unrestricted, is an essential resource stream that impacts the daily experience of every Key School student. Your generosity enabled us to spare no expense to make the past academic year as positive as it was. My sincere thanks to all of you who made a philanthropic contribution to the Annual Fund this year. Warmly,

Matthew Nespole Head of School

Dear Key School Community, WOW! I am humbled and in awe of the grit, determination, adaptability, creativity, grace, and generosity of EVERYONE in our beloved community. EVERYONE includes our students, faculty & staff, volunteers, current families, alumni/ae/x, parents of alumni/ae/x, grandparents, friends, the Parents’ Association, and our Board of Trustees. EVERYONE came together when we had to be physically apart. The outpouring of support whether it was time, talent, treasure, uplifting words, or a virtual hug has been inspiring. Over the last year, the Board of Trustees has been focused on how to support Matthew and his team during a time when there was no playbook and not enough hours in a day. Your generosity enabled us to respond nimbly to the changing dynamics and financial needs of our school. We were able to approve, without hesitation, the training, technology, expanded staffing, infrastructure enhancements to indoor and outdoor spaces, and so much more that was needed for the safest and best possible program during an extraordinary time. We, as a Board, are grateful to be emerging from this year on solid financial ground and setting our sights on the long-range strategic priorities we approved this spring. The priorities and goals of the strategic framework are grounded in our Mission and the essential questions we asked through the process that started in 2019 in constituent focus groups and surveys: What is a Key student? What is a Key graduate? What is an exceptional school? The priorities and goals are student-centric and interconnected. They will serve as the guide for setting the direction and organizing the work we do as a Board alongside Matthew and his team. We look forward to sharing more about this in the next several months. Thank you, EVERYONE, for all you do for Key!

Alanna M. Wright Board President

ANNUAL FUND

The Key community stepped up in a big way throughout the 2020-2021 fiscal year. Thanks to all of our generous donors, wonderful volunteers and thoughtful community – we were able to raise a total of $793,224 in unrestricted funds. In a time of uncertainty, our community was up for the challenge. The Annual Fund was able to achieve its goal by conducting the following:

Direct mailing over

2,000 individuals in our community

Fall Phonathon and Gazebo Giving Day which collectively raised over

$80,000 in donations and reached

over 400 people in one day

Spring Phonathon and Key’s BIG Give which collectively raised over

$50,000 in donations from 110 DONORS

Key's Class Giving Challenge, which engaged our alumni/ae/x community, resulted in

60 GIFTS from alums that live in 15 different

states across the country. The Class of 2004 won the challenge

Various efforts throughout the year, which resulted in

ANNUAL FUND

We depend on the widespread support of everyone who cares about our School. The broad variety of initiatives supported by the Annual Fund are only possible because of the Key community’s shared commitment to our Mission.

When donations are made to the Annual Fund you see the following programs impacted:

Key’s Greatest Need

Financial Aid

Teaching and Learning

Libraries and Technology

Fine and Performing Arts

Outdoor and Environmental Education

Physical Education and Athletics

Campus Upkeep

5%

The Annual Fund makes up roughly of the School’s annual budget. Gifts this year, in particular, were crucial to keeping our School safe and functional throughout the ever-evolving global pandemic. Gifts to Key supported expenses related to COVID-19 to prepare the School for hybrid learning and safely bringing students back to campus.

IMPACT REPORT

RESTRICTED ANNUAL FUND

Key has more than thirty Restricted Funds, which allows a donor to direct their money specifically to a program, department, or priority that either enhances that annual budget or allows Key to add new programs and priorities. Some of the ways these funds were used this past year include:

Three full-pay scholarships (Marcella Yedid Scholarship, Jackson Scholarship and Perry-Boucher Family Scholarship) for deserving students who otherwise would not be able to afford the cost of a Key School education

Dan Schmoyer Physical Education Fund, with money raised going to support physical education budgets

Lower School Thinkering Studio Fund, with money raised supporting new materials for students to learn and explore

Unity Gardens Grant, spearheaded by faculty members Amy Cline and Carol Mahoney, in conjunction with Key’s 4th Grade support, went to learning about healthy ecosystems and biodiversity, and helped build a native plant garden in between the Manse Addition and Katharine Hall

Upper School Furniture Fund, helping Key purchase new furniture for all of the Upper School Humanities classrooms

Student Support Fund, providing scholarships to help Key students pay for additional co-curricular activities such as Model Congress and Model UN

Additional restricted gifts were made to support, among other things, rain/ weather gear for Key faculty/staff who assisted with pick-up and dropoff last year, new basketball uniforms, the Upper School Robotics team, Diversity Equity and Inclusion efforts, and Lower School assemblies (via the Arts Council of Anne Arundel County)

IMPACT REPORT

ENDOWMENT/CAPITAL PROJECTS During the 2020-2021 school year, your dollars were hard at work supporting Key School’s students, faculty and staff in a variety of ways. Whether providing opportunities for professional development, providing technology to students and families, supporting updates to classrooms to create a safe learning environment, or expanding tools and software used by faculty and staff, your gifts positioned Key and our families to weather many of the challenges a global pandemic brought. ENDOWMENT UPDATE

CAPITAL PROJECTS UPDATE

Funding for Key’s Endowment helps ensure Key’s financial position for the years to come, thereby serving as a catalyst for excellence in support of Key’s Mission. Experiencing double-digit growth, Key’s Endowment continues to do well and positions the School for long-term success and impact.

The health, safety and happiness of our students is a top priority. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, Key was able to provide a safe environment for students to learn and grow. Your gifts supported:

There are nearly 20 Named Endowed Funds, each with funds designated to support specific priorities at Key School. Endowed funds have a major impact on students, faculty and staff. For example, thanks to one endowed fund, over $17,000 was applied to the 2020-2021 financial aid budget for Upper School Students. Another endowed fund supported professional development for Upper School faculty which included: Development of a continuation of the Calculus AB course, called Calculus II/III Attendance at numerous virtual conferences on a variety of topics Support for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion initiatives across the division

The installation of UV lighting on all 125 HVAC systems to clean the air and disinfect for both bacteria and viruses in all academic buildings Installation of new air purifiers to classrooms Professional development for faculty in support of distance learning The purchase of tools, supplies and materials to support on-campus learning, including: PPE, alcohol, disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer, thermometers, technology and cameras, plastic desk shields, individual supplies for First and Lower School students, enhanced Wi-Fi, electrostatic sprayers for more efficient room disinfection, and additional software licenses to manage programming and education Increased on-campus cleaning staff, including seven day porters who remain on campus each day to continually clean and disinfect

While much of the school year was different, a bright spot was watching students enjoy the fields and courts at Fusco Athletic Park. This spring, our Key School athletes were able to practice and compete at the Park. Generous gifts from our donors ensured that students had a safe, well-manicured athletic park to fully enjoy.

WAYS TO GIVE When considering a gift to Key, there are many opportunities that will not only support the excellence of the School’s outstanding programs, but may also provide a tax-deductible contribution to the donor.

Cash Contributions Unrestricted gifts of cash are the easiest and most popular way to support Key School. The School accepts gifts of cash including payment by Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express. Credit cards can be processed online at keyschool.org/giving or in the Advancement Office during normal business hours. Checks should be made payable to Key School. Simple Giving The Advancement Office can process automatic weekly, monthly or bi-monthly debits to your credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express) or checking account. Please contact the Advancement Office for more information. Matching Gifts The impact of a contribution can be greatly increased by a matching employer gift. When considering a donation, consult with your

employer and, if applicable, forward a completed matching gift form to the Advancement Office with your contribution. A matching gift can dramatically increase your support for the School. Stocks And Securities Gifts of stock or securities benefit the donor and the School. This type of gift is a tax-deductible contribution and the donor may avoid paying capital gains tax on the appreciated stock or security. Your broker and the Advancement Office can provide information and assistance. Deferred or Planned Gifts Gifts of real estate, tangible personal property, bequests, life insurance, or Charitable Trusts are of great value to the School and may provide many advantages to the donor. Please contact your personal financial advisors or the Advancement Office for information on planned giving opportunities.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS This report would not be possible without the aid of several members of the Key community. To those of you who have contributed your time and expertise to this project, we thank you.
