As & A2 revision
intensive courses 2009
Helping ensure success…
WHAT HES DOES OFFER? Hes caters principally for students sitting AS and A2 modular examinations. Previously its unique programme was exclusive to Hampstead but is now more widely available in Kingston-upon-Thames and Beaconsfield also. The Module-dedicated approach it pioneered provides for unparalleled flexibility, accommodating students typically in groups of six or fewer, where they revise only with those preparing for identical unit exams.
IMPORTANCE Continuing modifications to Advanced Level structures have not made the overall examination process less difficult and the AS/A2 combination remains a demanding proposition. In the current academic climate they are crucial to a student’s future: conditional offers from long-established universities have become increasingly difficult to satisfy and those failing to do so are far less likely to secure a place on the degree course of their choice. Certainly good results in AS units taken during the first year greatly strengthen a student’s UCAS application, moreover in view of Universities recent access to individual module scores.
OBJECTIVES Specifications currently in force are extensive and it would be invidious to attempt exhaustive revision of every topic even during a concentrated course. In this time, however, most students probably underestimate what can be achieved in a small group under the guidance of an expert tutor. HES aims to prepare students for imminent AS & A2 unit examinations and realise their academic potential by: • Module-dedicated courses typically in groups of six students or fewer • Intensive revision of key subject matter • Instruction in examination technique • Improvement of study and revision skills • Enhancement of understanding HES students leave in a confident frame of mind, better equipped to optimise the time remaining at their disposal.

Helping ensure success… TUITION HES tutors are all highly-qualified and vastly-experienced graduates with wide-ranging teaching backgrounds. In all cases they are current or past examiners and therefore possess first-hand knowledge of the requirements demanded by the Examining Bodies. Productive courses offer sufficient focus on individual requirements coupled with the benefits derived from the group dynamic. Experience shows that such revision is optimal with small numbers. Typically, therefore, AS & A2 classes comprise fewer than six and English Text Sessions and History Seminars are even smaller. Students have the opportunity to establish contact with their Tutor in advance in order to consider the topics causing difficulty. Invigilated examination practice normally takes place during the concluding forty-five minutes of each course. Papers are marked with detailed comment by the Tutor and then returned to the student.
COURSE FORMATS AS & A2 modules occupy a single day and, subject to the schedule, a student may combine as many of these as desired. Important and significant variations do exist in a particular subject between the various specifications available from Awarding Bodies. You will not need to be told, therefore, that it would be unwise were students to revise with those preparing for different unit exams. Modern Foreign Languages - the focus is on Grammar, Listening & Writing, Reading & Writing, and Speaking. The courses involve two common Seminars with a third session devoted to a particular Specification. English Literature - structured around Shakespeare and a wide variety of popular Text Sessions. The majority of courses involve eight hours tuition including any invigilated examination practice, or 3 x 8 hours for Modern Foreign Language Courses. Module revision begins at 9.00am and finishes at 6.00pm except in the case of certain half-unit courses which are scheduled either in the morning, from 9.00am - 1.00pm, or afternoon from 2.00pm - 6.00pm. A one hour break is taken for lunch. The numerous facilities of Hampstead Village, Kingston-upon-Thames or Beaconsfield Old Town are on each venue’s doorstep.
