SCOTLAND’S LEADING SOURCE OF INSPIRATION, EXCITEMENT AND RESOURCES FOR YOUNG SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS

YESC plays a leading role in growing interest and enthusiasm in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths subjects, inspiring the next John Logie Baird or Marie Curie through fun filled experiences and equipping schools with free science and engineering resources.

There are now more than 1,300 schools in our network, from Shetland to Dumfries, involving over 26,000 budding scientists and engineers.

Growing Interest and Sparking Enthusiasm Young Engineers and Science Clubs Scotland (YESC) is a Scotland wide primary and secondary school STEM education programme run by the Scottish Council for Development and Industry and supported by many of its members.

“Along with selecting key STEM subjects at school, joining my school’s Engineering Club was the most important choice I made when deciding to become an engineer. It isn’t always obvious at school what an engineer does but the freedom to combine maths and science to solve real problems soon sparked my interest. Thanks to joining an Engineering Club I went on to university to study engineering and then embarked on a varied, rewarding and hugely satisfying career in the Oil & Gas industry. Without being a member of my school’s Engineering Club, there is simply no way I would be an engineer today.” Alasdair Smith, Wood Group PSN “I enjoyed when the judges came round and asked us questions about what we have been doing throughout our time at Young Engineers. I can’t wait to do all my sciences at High School and learn more about Engineering” Pupil, Clarkston Primary School

Pupils test their problem-solving skills on a number of themed investigations and work alongside their teachers, real engineers and scientists to feed their curiosity and fire their imagination. Clubs run at lunchtime, after-school, or increasingly during class time, as part of the Curriculum for Excellence. The clubs are supported by many public and private sector partners.

“Your project ideas have enabled me to keep pupils motivated and engaged in our STEM Club” Teacher, Belmont Academy “The YESC team has been an invaluable support to us. The Coordinators bend over backwards to support and assist” Teacher, Newark Primary School “The SCDI Young Engineers and Science Clubs provide tremendous support for science activities and projects in schools across Scotland. Teachers, pupils and partner organisations all benefit from the amazing work of the clubs. They make a real and significant difference to science education within Scotland. I am honoured to be involved in Young Engineer and Science Club events where school pupils regularly demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of science in creative and innovative ways.” ways Dr Heather Reid OBE, Meteorologist & Science Education Consultant

Something for Everyone Our Pupils learn alongside their fellow pupils and real scientists and engineers. Their interest and enthusiasm is sparked with exciting, handson experiments and we help to build pathways to future careers in fun and engaging ways! Our Schools are fully supported by YESC; we help them to get their clubs up and running, access start-up grants, provide free resource kits and are always here to provide advice and assistance. Involvement in clubs allows teachers to enhance their own skills, whilst regular events and competitions provide networking opportunities and encourage sharing of best practice. Our Industry partners help to nurture Scotland’s next generation of scientists and engineers, by fostering an interest in STEM subjects at the grass roots level. Assisting local clubs is an excellent opportunity for continuing professional development of staff. For Scotland YESC supports the nation’s STEM ambitions and continues our long proud heritage of producing world leading scientists and engineers.

Feeding Curiosity & Firing Imaginations Our programme is mainly aimed at P5-S6 pupils with the wow factor provided by many partners allowing us to provide free bespoke science and engineering experiment kits. Our projects include: > Junior Saltire Awards: Harnessing the power of the sea. > Tweety Pi: NEW An exciting coding project for primaries. > Pi in the Sky: Our new coding project to create and log a weather station. > Go Forth!: NEW Civil engineering bridge building challenge. > Science on the Menu: A feast of foodie science experiments. > I’m an Engineer, I can help here!: NEW Flood Alert: Young Engineers to the rescue! > 3D Printer Engineering Design Challenge: Cutting edge technology in the classroom! > Sensational Science: Exploring the science of sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell. > Heather’s Hut: Learning how to turn Scotland’s weather into renewable electricity.
