has been said that a hangover is the wrath of grapes, but more often than not it is the wrath of several craft beers, half a bottle of Scotch & four too many Root Beer Barrels at the Green Parrot. The inal 69 days of the year bring us Fantasy Fest, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years & no less than 9.85 Sloppy Sundays. As visitors & residents of the best chain of drinking islands in the world, it is our duty to treat every day like a holiday. Drinking Season is upon us, and, as always, Bar Tab is here to help. We know you gave up on drinking water years ago, so we are pleased to present some of the best hangover cures from across the globe adopted for the naturally occurring environment of the Florida Keys:

20 kwBarTab.com

Key Lime Dry: Half a lime & apply it to the armpit of your drinking arm before you start drinking. They swear by the method in Old San Juan & claim a lemon will work just as well. Make it a Keys cure by using fresh Key limes, graham cracker & sweetened condensed milk. Fat people will love you. Rooster Pooh Tea: Cowboys in the Old West tamed their hangovers with a nice brew of rabbit pooh. You’ll have better luck with our feathered friends here & it’s a great excuse to beat the shit out of the rooster who kept you awake all night. 5K Cure: Native Americans kicked off their hangover with a brisk run & completed the cure by licking up their own sweat. Believe it or not, Key West has a ine looking group of it runners. Save your energy & grab a beer near the inish line of the next race. Grab a hottie & start licking. Tell the police it’s a cultural thing.

The 800: An ancient Sicilian tradition prescribed dried horse penis as a cure for over-imbibing. The local police force apparently frowns upon removing the penis’ from their mounted patrol, but a visit to the 800 block of Duval Street will present several people willing to give you their penis. Many of them are hung like horses. Voodoo: Haitians start the morning by placing 13 pins in the cork of the offending bottle & calling on the spirits to remove the poison from their bodies. Forget the pins; drink some Emergen-C & head to the cemetery. You will be in good company knowing that no matter how shitty you feel, the rest of the people there are worse off. Sex On The Beach: A Roman tradition involved a quick trip to the vomitorium followed by a day of sex with one of the town scribes. Add some Key West style by seducing a BarTab columnist with ine food, booze & kinky sex. Don’t forget to brush your teeth. The Hemingway: When all else fails you have two choices. Drink the pain away or head to Idaho & kill yourself. Rooster Pooh Tea suddenly doesn’t seem like such a bad option.

Happy Hangovers. David L. Sloan is the co-author of

The Key West Hangover Survival Guide & author of the newly released Key West Bucket List. Buy a dozen copies now and consider your Christmas shopping done. www.FatRedPen.com

I

t’s been said that for every action, there is a equal opposite reaction. IF the “action” is the many events we host here in the Florida Keys to attract tourists the opposite reaction is to stage an event quite the opposite, shortly after the real event. To the fact is that us locals try to keep these “events” to ourselves. But now (because I’ll write just about anything for money), I let you tourists in on the little known “opposite” events you MAY be able to join in on this year if ya know where to find em. In early October most of our time here is consumed with hurricanes, stocking our homes with enough firewood & dried meat to get us through our long frigid winters, & our local elections. One mayoral candidate claims to have been abducted by aliens. PS. I’m voting for him. We then gear up for the world’s 2nd largest mobile insane asylum “Fantasy Fest” I’m not going to dwell on this topic too much except to say that this

year the new rule is that guys must get a permit to wear a thong as part of your costume, the rule with girl thongs is simply, if your thong is big enough to have tied down the luggage on top of your minivan leave it in the hotel room. After you tourists leave we stage “Amish Fantasy Fest.” It gives our over worked livers a rest & we all look forward to the horse drawn buggy parades, quilting, pie baking & pole barn raising competition. The traditional Amish beard is optional, but recommended. Right after the Fest “Parrot heads in Paradise” to take over the town to celebrate everything Jimmy Buffet. From his early potty training success to his legendary money counting skills. If it involves Jimmy, this large group of devotees celebrate it, all week! After the last flowered shirt & foam parrot hat has headed home we move on with our annual local worship of our real favorite artists Donny & Marie Osmond. The fun starts early as Marie leads her witches’ coven in their quest to conjure up the spirits to ensure good weather. & Donny performs a raveup version of his hit “Puppy Love” on radio host Bill Hoebee’s Show. The event culminates with a free drunken Donny & Marie concert at sunset. “She’s a little bit country & he’s a little bit rock & roll” & it’s all just flat-out madcap fun (as you can imagine).

Attract The “Pirates in Paradise” festival goes next during this week. You can’t swing a dead cat around without hitting someone dressed like a pirate. But after a week of plundering, rum & looting the karma police deem that we stage our “anti-pirate week.” A week where we try to return some of the stuff we stole from you tourists during the year & switch to gin for a week. Then it’s on to the World Championship powerboat races. Large, flashy, loud, expensive boats slash through the water at breakneck speeds. The amazing part is that this sport has never caught a huge fan base or TV sponsors soothe winners get barely more than a trophy & gas money. You can even see the boats up close on Duval Street at night often covered with power boat racers biggest fans… strippers. To offset the intense noise of the powerboats we bring in mimes to race rowboats the following week in an effort to give our noise traumatized sea life a break. A few of the other “opposite” events we do here include – The “Anti Hemingway” Festival where in lieu of honoring the keys best writer Hemingway, we celebrate the keys worst writers. I’m being honored this year. If you’re planning on entering the lookalike contest remember to wear tiger skin briefs & get a spray on tan, FYI.

Finally right around Thanksgiving we have our annual “Turkey Trot.” Widely considered the Kentucky derby of live turkey racing. Followed by our annual Ulysses S. Grant Parade. Our tribute to the man historians called “our drunkest president” literally hundreds of Grant look-alikes stumble down Duval Street in authentic civil war garb & real swords. Critics say it’s dangerous, but photographers & tabloid news shows really seem to love it. The alternative events I’ve mentioned are pretty much only for well informed locals, out patients, federal agents & the film crew from the movie “Jackass 4” but a well placed $20 bill to the right person (me) might get you directions to some of these equally cool but less publicized (until now) events.

Bill Hoebee is the host of Keys TV’s Club Hour & can be heard weekdays 2-7pm on the Florida Keys #1 radio show, “Hoebee in the Morning” on SUN 99.5 FM.

BT: How do you spend your nights off? K: Slightly affected by whichever vodka flavor I’ve chosen. BT: And your days? K: Sleepy, usually. I do one day shift a week & the rest are nights, so my days are usually rather sluggish. by Lars McGowen BT: Full name, years in Key West, favorite color? Kristin Elizabeth Marchetti, 7-1/2 years in Key West & my favorite color would have to turquoise. BT: It’s 5 o’clock on Friday, where are you? K: Happy hour at The Lazy Gecko, most likely. BT: Favorite vodka flavor? K: Usually just regular, plain old vodka, but I get crazy sometimes & go with Cherry or even Rangtang. BT: Do you have a favorite craft beer? K: Lately, I really like the Banana Bread Beer. Not being a big beer drinker, I would have to go with that one. BT: Are you serving more tricks or treats? K: Well, I don’t know. Probably, if you consider cocktails being treats, I’d have to say treats. BT: What costume won’t you be bartending in this year? K: A pirate costume because I’ve had to do that too many times. I won’t be bartending in a cheerleader costume either.

BT: What do you like most/least about your job? K: Most is that it can be really fun. You do get to entertain people a lot & that’s a good time. Least is the people that come in & when you ask them, “How are you doing today?,” they say, “But Light.” BT: Best Fantasy Fest party? K: I work a lot during Fantasy Fest, so I don’t really get to go to all the events. But I try to hit the Fogarty’s Red Party & the Finnegan’s Green Party. BT: What’s your favorite menu item at the Sports Page? K: That’s a tough one. Lot’s of good stuff. I love our pizza, probably our pizza. Lately my favorite’s the Buffalo Chicken pizza. BT: Do you have a specialty drink or a specialty shot? K: I make a delicious Sports Page lemonade which has tons of booze in it & tastes very much like something nonalcoholic. BT: Any other shout-outs or plugs? K: No, just hi to everybody at the Sports Page. Thanks for showing up every day. kwBarTab.com

BT: Full name, from, favorite color, year in Key West? Curtis James Grass, Long Beach, CA, red & 7 years. BT: Discuss your rise as the island’s favorite bartender? C: My rise in Key West started when they invented Pearl Plum Vodka. That pretty much catapulted me into the elitist that I am today & it continually puts me in a winning position. Pearl Plum Vodka is probably the tastiest Vodka I’ve ever put on the table. BT: So what is your signature drink? C: It’s called a Plum Lemonade & you can only get it here because I put my finger in every drink I make. BT: I was going to ask favorite Vodka flavor, but I think we’ve covered that already. C: No, my favorite Vodka flavor is Jameson. BT: If money were no object, what would you do tomorrow? C: I would buy a midget. BT: Have you ever rode the Conch Tour Train? C: No. I’ve rode behind it though. BT: How do you spend your nights off? C: Usually with a glass of Chablis. I don’t drink it. I just keep it by my bedside. It just makes me feel more sophisticated. BT: What are your days like? C: They lead into my nights, which is really cool.

by Lars McGowen BT: How about your most memorable Halloween? C: My most memorable Halloween was, probably, when I was 12 & I got a kiss from a girl that was in a Yoda costume, or a guy that was in a Yoda costume. Don’t write that. BT: Best Fantasy Fest party? C: Best Fantasy Fest party is going to have to be 2011 because I’m running into everybody I haven’t seen in a long time. And my birthday falls on the day of the parade. And the Wet T-Shirt contest at Dante’s on Thursday afternoon. BT: Have you ever been on a float? C: For Fantasy Fest? No. BT: Do you have any costumes picked out for this year? C: Yeah, a Ron Burgundy outfit because we’re all going as the cast of Anchorman. BT: Any other shout-outs or plugs? C: I’d like to thank all the people at Dante’s for continually supporting me, all my friends. I’d like to thank all my friends here at Dante’s because this is, honestly, the only place I’ve ever worked where it’s not just co-workers, it’s family. kwBarTab.com

BT: Full name, favorite color, from? Chrissy Garrison, from Southern California, & blue. BT: Have you found a happy medium between living in Key West & working in Key West? C: I travel a lot. So, I get off the rock every chance I get. BT: If money were no object, what would you do tomorrow? C: Pay off all my friend’s bills. BT: What are 3 Fantasy Fest essentials? C: Alcohol, showing skin & wearing leather.

BT: A German tourist walks into a bar, asks for a beer. What do you give him? C: A Budweiser.

BT: How long have you worked in the Key West bar scene? C: Forever [laughs]. Officially, since 1984.

BT: Are you a sweet angel or a naughty dominatrix? C: A naughty angel.

BT: Describe your slinging style in five words or less. C: Put up or shut up.

BT: Tell us a little bit about Tattoos & Scars. C: It’s the coolest bar on the island right now & it’s going to be for years to come. It’s turned into a great local spot. We have really good music & great happy hours. We have two happy hours, one from 4 to 7pm & one from 2 to 4am for the service industry people. So it’s awesome.

BT: What’s your most memorable Halloween? C: Two Fantasy Fests ago. It was before they had the nonude ordinance. I was at a bar outside on the street, & I saw more cock & balls than anybody ever met in my life. I swear to God I did. It was really scary. BT: What’s your drink of choice? C: Crown & Coke. BT: What are your days like? C: I lay out nude at the Southernmost all the time. BT: What’s the sexiest outfit you’ve ever bartend in? C: I was body painted as the American flag from head to toe. 34 kwBarTab.com

BT: What about the Titty Tuesday party? C: We’re not allowed to be nude as long as somebody can see you from a residence, but so far there are no residents around here, so everybody’s going to be nude [laughs]. BT: Any other shout-outs or general plugs? C: Let’s see. I’d like to do a shout-out to Pete’s Piano Bar because they’re great & they have really good people working for them. Also, all my co-workers at Tattoos & Scares.

BT: What are 3 Fantasy Fest essentials? F: A great costume. I can’t - do you really want me to say broads & alcohol? [Laughs] BT: Tell us about your new CD. F: All original music, a little bit of funk, a little bit of jazziness, a little bit of rock all mixed into one. BT: Full name, favorite color, from? Michael George Patrick Festa, green, from Pittsburgh, PA.

BT: Musical influences? F: My father & the Dave Matthews Band.

BT: How did you get your start in the Key West music scene? F: A month after I got here I was fortunate enough to play a show with Lance Taylor & that got me moving at The Good Life for their Christmas party in December of 2008.

BT: Why do you play? F: Because it makes me happy & to pay the bills. I’ve always wanted to do it. I’m not trying to be a rock star - I’m just trying to make a living off of it.

BT: Have you found a happy medium between working in the restaurant gig & playing music? F: I have. I’ve made playing music my full-time job & working in the restaurant business my part-time job.

BT: Is it hard to keep things fresh? F: Yes, it’s very hard. I think, I get into the habit of writing about the same thing. It’s sometimes difficult to find inspiration. BT: Is there anything that you’re, perhaps secretly, you’re the best at? Beer pong, darts, water polo? F: Usually, when I drink, I get the notion that I’m the greatest pool player on the face of the earth, but I usually get my ass kicked by chicks.

BT: What kind of music do you play? F: I subconsciously play anti-love songs. & the style of music is kind of a mix between sublime & hip-hop. BT: What would happen if you covered the Thunderdome song by Tina Turner? F: I don’t know it, but I think I would rock it. I’m gotta learn it. BT: What are you doing when you’re not working? F: Writing music, enlightening myself & sleeping. 36 kwBarTab.com

BT: Any other shout-outs, secrets, or shameless plugs? F: Just a thank you to Derek & Robin Menard for bringing me to Key West. Bobalu’s for helping us out, helping us get started on this musical journey. Shout-outs to all the females who’ve inspired me to write my anti-love songs.

Are You Ready for Some Football?

(And if So, Could You Explain it To Me?)

It’s

football season folks & once again, that leaves me as the loneliest girl at the bar. I don’t understand football. I mean, I know it’s a game about gaining yards, scoring touchdowns & defending territory. What I mean is, I don’t get what’s fun about watching football on television & feeling a part of a team’s spirit. Before you roll your eyes, I should mention this isn’t one of those sports bashing articles where a non-fan ridicules football fans for their antics & team loyalty. Actually, this is quite the opposite. As the odd man out here, I’m pretty sure there’s something wrong with me. I want to participate, really, I do, & I’ve tried to watch & understand the love you all seem to have for the sport & its players. I long to be excited each time a player catches an exceptional pass. I so want to cheer when one of those monstrous linebacker tackles another player like he was nothing but a tin can waiting to be crushed. I want to squeal with you when

40

By Leigh Pujado

a touchdown is scored & the player does one of those knee-wobbling dances by the goal post. I even want to paint my face, slap on a team jersey & scream at the television with you until we both have some serious laryngitis. You all seem so very excited about your teams & I want to be excited too, but sadly I just cannot seem to connect to all the hoopla. And unfortunately I enjoy watching the game as much as I enjoy watching paint dry. How did this happen? How can it be possible that an entire bar full of people are riveted by a football game, hopping up & and down, blood pressure skyrocketing, having the time of their life, & I’m not even marginally entertained. It makes not sense. I love bars. I love beer. I love dressing up in costumes.... especially “group-themed”

costumes. I love to yell & I love to talk smack. So why don’t I like football? Maybe it’s genetic. Maybe I’m missing the sports fan gene. It’s certainly no fault of my upbringing. Based on my geographical history, I should be wearing only red & white this season & riding around town with an obnoxious Harry Husker sticker on my car rear window. I grew up in Nebraska, land where Husker Football-mania is as ubiquitous as corn & Republicans. Still, football never took root in my soul. I even attended the University of Nebraska back when they were winning championships & NEVER SAW A SINGLE GAME. During college football season I struggled to find alternative activities to watching “our boys” play as roughly 97% of the population sat glued to their televisions while the remaining 3% were seated in Memorial Stadium in Lincoln watching the game live. It was lonely to say the least. Football brings people together, people who under different circumstances, would never intermingle. For four quarters & roughly 4 to 6 hours, its fans are devoid of their individual ethnicity, language, religion & socio-economic

status. Yet it’s as American as apple pie. & I am an awkward slice of rhubarb. My best attempt at understanding this innate aversion I have to football is to think about my friend Melissa Shirley. Melissa is an Eagles fan. She’s nuts for the team, wears a jersey when they play, screams, hoots, hollers, gets cranky when they lose & sings & dances when they win. Melissa also, (and paradoxically,) hates musicals. She doesn’t get them. She doesn’t understand why the characters need to break out into cheesy song all the time & she really doesn’t understand why someone like me feels deeply moved by all that singing. When I see a football game on at a bar with a happy crowd surrounding & I feel that inexplicable turning of my stomach, I just imagine that this is how Melissa would feel if she were forced to watch a group of theatre nerds watching “Oklahoma.” (And I don’t mean The Sooners, I mean Rodgers & Hammerstein.) Doing this, in some, small, warped way, makes me feel connected to an Eagles fan. & if I feel connected to a Philadelphia fan, it’s pretty difficult to feel lonely during football season. What has technology done for dating?

Well, it makes it incredibly simple to keep tabs on anyone you’ve ever dated or wanted to — & exes never disappear. That’s true for dating in Key West, too. Just try going out on Duval Street without running into everyone you’ve ever slept with. I was still “the new girl” in town when I first realized just how small this island truly is. I met some girlfriends from work at the Green Parrot, & a group of guys were nearby at the bar. One of them worked with us & had been persistently pursuing me, another I had been out on a few dates with, one I had slept with on vacation before I even moved down, & the last one I had a huge crush on. How the hell did they all know each other? Welcome to Key West! It’s like middle school with sex. Now, let’s throw the Internet & iPhones into the mix, & you’ve got a recipe for some serious drama!

Remember the days when you’d ceremoniously delete a guy’s number from your phone, & sayonara! No more drunk dialing. No more late night hookups. You’d freed yourself from all temptation. Now, there’s email, texts, Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Flickr, Foursquare, BBM, blogs, websites, & YouTube. These social mediums are only getting more invasive & more viral. Forget Facebook stalking an ex, just see where’s he’s checked in on Foursquare or Facebook Places & then go to Rick’s or the Gecko to actually stalk him.

52

As if our little coconut telegraph wasn’t a reliable enough network for spreading gossip. You can’t sneeze in Key West without getting a reputation. People on this island know whom I’ve slept with before I even have! What about flirting? & by flirting, I mean sexting. What really yicks me out is that it’s just so easy, & I don’t need Tiger Woods or Anthony Weiner to prove this point. Just take the boys I work with. They carry on multiple flirtations with multiple girls, tourists & locals alike, via text all day long. Ladies, if you’ve sent a naked picture to that hot guy you met on vacation in Key West, I’ve seen it, & so have all of his friends. Don’t get me wrong, every time my phone dings when I’m involved in a text message love affair, my heart’s aflutter with anticipation, but then it quickly sinks into suspicion wondering who else Romeo is dinging. So what can we make of all of this? The way we flirt & date online is really just a manifestation of how we flirt & date offline. A player is a player is a player is a player. Technology has just made it that much easier to express our lusty little selves on many different avenues. & Key West is a lusty little island where all we really want to do is play. Proceed with caution! Questions? Comments? Advice? Want to ask Betty out on a date? Email her at singleontheisland@gmail.com or find her on Twitter @singleontheisle. You might get lucky…
