President’s Award

DETECTIVE RICHARD PEDONE Garden City Police Dept.

Since 2011 the President’s Award has recognized above-and-beyond volunteer spirit and contributions to the Village of Garden City. Detective Pedone will be honored for his efforts, as well as those of his department, especially on behalf of the children of our community. Local children first met “Officer Rich” in 1991 when he began teaching Project Pride, a program for fifth-grade students that poses the dangers surrounding drugs and alcohol. Back In 1995, Ernest J. Cipullo, the police commissioner at the time, introduced the Community Policing Division to address sensitive issues affecting businesses and residents. He handpicked Officer Pedone to tackle these challenges. In 1997 Officer Pedone was then promoted to youth detective and assumed a dual role of community policing and juvenile detective. “Detective Pedone has been a fixture at virtually every Village of Garden City event throughout his illustrious 30-year career here – and we are grateful that he dedicated himself to our community, our families, and most importantly our children,” said Tom McCambridge, president of The Garden City Chamber of Commerce.

Community Achievement Award GARDEN CITY VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPT

Established in 1974, this recognition commemorates outstanding professionalism within the Village of Garden City and beyond, through one’s position or vocation. The Garden City Fire Department’s rich heritage is rooted with the Independent Volunteer fire companies that began to form in the village in 1899 after a devastating fire at The Garden City Hotel. In 1920, in order to be more organized and bring these independent companies together, 31 local residents became “charter” members of the Garden City Fire Department, Inc. formally organizing the volunteer fire department. Soon after, the department was integrated into the Village Government. Since 1920, hundreds of residents – both men and women - have proudly served in the ranks of the Volunteer Fire Service in Garden City. Under the direction of a Volunteer Fire Chief and 3 Assistant Chiefs, the department utilizes a three tier approach to providing its vital services: with quality training and equipment, quick response and comprehensive fire inspection and prevention programs. All firefighters in the department, both volunteer and paid, train weekly to ensure their readiness for the various emergencies that may present themselves, including: fires, motor vehicle accidents, carbon monoxide incidents, hazardous materials incidents, electrical emergencies, severe weather, Garden City Fire Department Truck response, and more. In addition, throughout the year, firefighters attend various courses and live fire burn training at the Nassau County Fire Service Academy. The department has a fleet of apparatus that include four certified pumpers, two certified ladder trucks, a heavy rescue and command support vehicles. Within the fleet of apparatus, the department incorporates state of the art technology including thermal imaging cameras, hazardous gas monitoring equipment, mobile computers, and hydraulic rescue equipment. The department also provides a comprehensive fire inspection and prevention program to the village. Program enhancements include computer database pre-plans of area occupancies, rigorous fire inspections of schools, businesses and multi-family dwellings, and a devotion to public fire safety education through the department’s Fire Prevention & Education program. Each year the department educates thousands of students and residents through in-house safety classes, its annual fire prevention week program, and fire safety lectures throughout the community including at Adelphi University, area apartment buildings and local businesses. The department is always looking for new volunteer members and has a year-round open enrollment. Some regard being a volunteer firefighter as being one of the highest forms of community service. It is a great opportunity for residents to give back to their fellow neighbors in their time of need. Some of the benefits that come with being a volunteer firefighter include: free tuition at Nassau Community College as sponsored by the County of Nassau, real property tax reductions, great camaraderie, lasting friendships and more. A heartfelt Congratulations to all of the honorees at the 2016 Pineapple Ball for all that you do to make our incredible Village of Garden City a great place to live and work

A very special shout out to our great friend Detective Richard Pedone You always knew how to “teach our children well” that they “must have a code” to “try and live by” and you would “help them with their youth” as “they seek the truth” For this, above all, is why you are beloved in the Village of Garden City

?

February 27, 2001 as then Youth Officer Pedone (center) in conjunction with Judge Merril Biscone (left) gave a tour of the Village Justice Court and Police Station to Hemlock School Kindergarten Class as then five year old Tyler Biscone (21 years old today) and classmates watch, listen and learn about our local justice and law enforcement systems. This was the first of many tours that the duo gave to our students.

Dear Dad, Congratulations on achieving this presidential award. My whole life I grew up watching and admiring how greatly you impact everyone that surrounds you. I’ve always been honored to have you as my father who is so passionate about his career and helping people even if it is guiding them and being the change they need in their lives. It’s remarkable that you are being acknowledged not only for all your hard work but being honored for the person you are. This award means so much and acknowledges a legacy that you established filled with honesty, trust, generosity and most importantly your sincerity. There is no one else that deserves this award as much as you, you’ve always put your whole heart into every person that has an issue, every stranger in need and most importantly in raising me to want to strive and be at least half of the person that you are. You have affected the Garden City Community, your Police department, your friends and family in ways that you will never fully understand how greatly and powerful your words of wisdom and caring soul has changed all of our lives forever. I’m forever grateful for the life you have provided for me, the yellow brick road of support and guidance throughout my life and always telling and showing me that you love me. Hears to you dad and I hope you enjoy this award as much as I am by being your daughter. I love you very much. Love, Chell Bell

Congratulations to my husband Rich on receiving the President’s award. Your 30 years of devoted, professional service to the Garden City community is reflected in this award. This also represents a good man who treats everyone with respect, compassion, and a very generous open heart. Who would have thought that 46 years later here you are getting a presidential award. This just shows how much potential you have to succeed and achieve beyond anything we could have ever dreamed of. I never would have imagined that our lives would have transpired to what they are today, but that is mostly because of you and your impact on the ones you love. Over the years I have been so grateful for how you care for our daughter and me. You treat everyone as if they are a part of your family, which is so rare to come by. I’m so fortunate to be sharing my life with a loving, strong, compassionate and good man and father. There are no words to express how much you mean to our daughter and me.

Love you always and forever,

Liz
