Station Plaza, Wyandanch

WELCOME

Thank you for supporting the efforts of the Wyandanch Plaza Association and understanding what it means to invest in people and a community on “the Rise.” A thriving creative sector is a powerful economic development asset which can be parlayed into other cultural and civic benefits. Exposing Long Island residents to beautiful, culturally significant arts programming and entertainment strengthens understanding, appreciation, and goodwill between people of different backgrounds. A significant number of people who travel through Wyandanch or who have heard of its ongoing community leader-led transformation are being exposed to all that Greater Wyandanch, Wyandanch Village, and the new Plaza have to offer. As some of you may know, the Wyandanch Plaza Association, Inc., is a rather new entity. It was formed as a charitable corporation in 2016 under New York’s not-for-profit corporation law for the purpose of assisting revitalization efforts being conducted by both private and public organizations within the Hamlet of Wyandanch, NY. WPA offers programs and events in conjunction with local partners, including arts & culture organizations and others, to encourage Long Island residents to visit Wyandanch Plaza for the purpose of catalyzing social and economic development through culture and the arts. WPA’s programs and events enhance the quality of life for residents and help support a strong positive community identity, a sense of place and of pride. WPA’s offerings supplement services provided by the Town of Babylon and Suffolk County. Thank you for your continued support on this journey, Russell C. Albanese, Chair

In Memory of Delano Hartley Stewart 1942-2017 Mr. Stewart, born in Panama to Reverend Waldaba Stewart and Ruby Stewart de Sealey, was the conscience of Wyandanch, a community he moved to in 1974, with his wife Anne and their young family. Mr. Stewart graduated from Canal Zone College where he studied English and Theater, and then, following a move to NYC, attended Columbia University’s Graduate School of Arts, where he studied Theater Administration. A consummate performer, he traveled the country and had extended engagements in NYC and Las Vegas under the name Danny Rae. Mr. Stewart was the founder and Director of the Bed-Sty Theatre, where he wrote, directed and produced plays. In 1971, he founded the Black Theater Alliance. He also served as a consultant to university and regional theaters for the United States Institute for Theater Technology. Where Mr. Stewart truly made his mark was in community planning and activism. After working for the NYC Community Development Agency, he helped his brother win election to the NYS Senate in 1968. He then worked as a senator’s aide- where he believed he made his greatest contributions to the improvement of the quality of life in underserved communities. In fact, one of his recommendations resulted in a law that created medical scholarships and tax incentives for doctors who agreed to serve in medically underserved communities. Upon moving to Wyandanch, Mr. Stewart owned and operated an insurance brokerage in the community. He focused on bringing about changes in the Wyandanch School System. He founded the Coalition for Better Government. He and the coalition fought the MTA to keep the Wyandanch Train Station running. And in 1984 and 1988, he served as LI campaign manager and co-campaign manager for Jesse Jackson’s presidential bids. In 1991, he founded the LI newspaper Point of View and in 2002, continuing his efforts to better his community, he helped organize a three-day workshop that produced Wyandanch Revitalization, a smart growth plan that called for a pedestrian friendly center at the train station and would include affordable housing, a restaurant district, and other economic development. It was to be the precursor to the current Wyandanch Rising redevelopment.
