kids FEST

Why Peoples Gas supports Kids Fest Peoples Gas is proud to partner with the Observer Publishing Company and be one of the 2018 sponsors for Kids Fest in Washington County. Every year, we sponsor more than 200 community events throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania. Firstly, as a company we feel it is our moral obligation to support the many communities we serve. But the reasoning behind our efforts runs very deeply. We constantly question ourselves about where our resources can do the most good. Typically, our funding of community initiatives falls into two broad categories. We attempt to serve both basic human needs and economic development. We do this because we realized long ago that we are deeply integrated with our community and the health of our community enables our company to be healthier. We’re all in this together, customers, communities and our employees. In basic human needs, we support organizations like the Salvation Army, food banks, United Way, youth initiatives, volunteer fire departments and many others. In economic development, we support a number of start-up incubator efforts, job creation initiatives, job training initiatives and new market development projects. We also support county fairs, ongoing community venues, events like Kids Fest, and other events that all fall under the broad definition of tourism and visitor activities. Tourism is a multi-billion-dollar industry in Southwestern Pennsylvania, and this industry is multi-layered. It ranges from some of the nation’s largest sports teams and venues to relatively small, grassroots events that so often help define the unique character of the 18 Pennsylvania counties we serve. Tourism and community venues enhance the value of life with-

in their respective communities and draw in visitors from adjacent areas. Washington County is certainly unique and diversified. Kids Fest is one of its showplaces, and not just for the day of the event. On the surface, its single day of activities might seem to be overshadowed with some of the county’s other attractions. Washington is blessed with an abundance of excellent golf courses, colleges, lakes and recreational areas, covered bridges and even Meadowcroft, one of America’s most important archaeological sites. But the publicity of Kids Fest reaches far beyond the walls of Washington Crown Center, and it carries a very special message. Its publicity sends out some extremely positive information about the county and the people who live there. It says Washington County is a place for families and growth. It cares for kids. This is a message that resonates with people at very deep, emotional levels.

It’s also one of the great truths about economic development. Economic development is about more than money and development of commercial and residential real estate; it’s about strengthening families. Kids Fest offers a free day of fun and creative activities for children. This type of family activity may be among the most basic needs that any community can provide. It’s a basic need we recognize and support along with food security, heating security in winter, educational needs and environmental initiatives. It also highlights a whole range of local vendors and businesses, thus supporting traditional economic development. A quick glance at these businesses shows that among others, they are electrical contractors, a health system, auto companies, a moving company, real estate company, lumber company … the list goes on. What it demonstrates is that an entire community recognizes and is involved

with its children. That an entire community is so involved may be one of the strongest possible statements that the people who live there are looking to its future. At Peoples, we also have to look to the future. Like Washington County, we have to embrace what we’ve accomplished. We don’t have the deep history of the county; we only go back 135 years. Washington County goes back centuries further. But in our company’s 135 years of existence, we feel we’ve accomplished a lot together. The future is where we are both headed. The children of Washington have a bright future. There are new sources of energy uniquely centered in Washington County and new ways to use that energy in environmentally friendly ways. We’re entering an era of new technologies and new jobs. At Peoples, we’re looking at new technologies like combined heat and power and natural gas fuel cells. Both of these technologies use natural gas more cleanly than ever before and help customers reduce their energy costs. So, like Washington County, we’re invested in the future. It’s a dynamic region and we are fully part of it. And we support the kids at Kids Fest for all the above reasons and for another very important one – we realize that the kids there on March 17 jumping around in the inflatable fun zone and rushing about together in a dozen different games will very possibly be some of our future employees and company leaders.

kids FEST

Paying it forward Children’s Consignment Corner sales will benefit the Washington City Mission BY FRANCESCA SACCO Kids Fest is Washington County’s largest family-friendly event. The day is chock-full of live entertainment, an inflatable fun zone, sports and fitness areas, health and wellness zones and now, a children’s consignment corner. It’s the perfect place to pick up gently used children’s items like clothes, toys and furniture without breaking the bank. And while it’s a great addition for families, it will have an even bigger impact on the Washington community. A portion of the consignment fees will be donated to the Washington City Mission, and local business and event sponsor All Ways Moving and Storage has donated its services to deliver any unwanted items from the sale to the City Mission following the event. Johanna Hoyt, All Ways Moving and Storage owner, says selecting the City Mission as the Kids Fest Consignment Corner’s nonprofit beneficiary was the right move. “Without the support of the community members and local businesses, the City Mission would not be able to provide recovery and independence to those who have been displaced within our community,” she says. “Your donations to the City Mission will help provide hope and recovery for those in our community who struggle with providing warmth and nutrition for themselves and their families.” Founded in 1941, the City Mission strives to provide compassionate care and life recovery to struggling members of the community. Services include meals, the Hidden Treasures Thrift Store, the ANSYS Career Training and Education Center, Samaritan care, permanent housing support and

medical care. The City Mission also runs shelters for men, women, women with children, and veterans. Sara Lindsay, director of community programs at the City Mission, says community members tend to associate the mission solely with their shelter programs, and are rarely aware of their food pantry and community programs that are available to low-income families and individuals. Exposure and assistance from donors and volunteers

makes the difference. “The City Mission exists to serve individuals who face overwhelming barriers – like mental health concerns, addictions and physical limitations. We provide everything from food, shelter and clothing to counseling, case management, classes, career services and spiritual development,” says Leah Dietrich, director of residential programs. “But we simply can’t reach that goal alone – donors and volunteers help us provide the services that

we offer to our clients, but we also rely heavily on support from partnering community organizations. Our hope is that together we can help our clients move to independence and sustain their foundations with all of the resources that are available.” You can browse the Kids Fest Consignment Corner from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 17 at the Washington Crown Center in the former American Eagle space. n

ELECTRICAL SAFETY TIPS For Kids

NEVER stick fingers, toys or other objects into an electrical outlet. You might get hurt by electricity.

Electricity is helpful. It provides energy that we use to light our homes and operate lots of other things. But electricity can also be dangerous. Lots of people are hurt each year in electrical accidents. We could avoid the accidents by following these simple safety tips...

SE

Schultz Electric

NEVER place a hair-dryer, radio or other electronics near the bathtub or shower. Electricity and water are dangerous partners! NEVER pull a plug from an outlet by its cord. Electricity could jump from the cord and give you a nasty zap.

NEVER place your drinks on top of your video games or other electronics. They could easily spill, and get you zapped by electricity. NEVER climb trees near power lines. You might touch one by mistake and get zapped.

724-228-5869

STAY AWAY from places marked with warning signs. These places are very dangerous, even for adults!

PA license PA 039012

Anytime you need to use something that needs electricity, ask an adult for help! Remember, you can never be too safe!

Virtual visits WHS Virtual Care is just one more way that Washington Health System is providing patient-centered care to the surrounding community Washington Health System has been making great advancements by adopting new technology, particularly when that technology helps to make life easier and healthier for their patients. From their new stateof-the-art simulation education center, to handy smartphone apps, the health system is making it easier than ever to connect their patients with the best healthcare available. On Jan.1, WHS introduced an app that could possibly change the way you receive health care, all from your phone or computer. WHS Virtual Care allows you visit with a doctor at virtually any time of day and from any location. If you have an illness or injury that doesn’t require an emergency room visit, but is urgent enough to need immediate care, you can quickly log into the app and speak with a board-certified doctor. The process is simple. You can download the free and convenient app right from your smartphone’s store or marketplace. For those who don’t have a smartphone, the same program will be available via the WHS website. WHS recommends that you download the app and complete the quick registration process before you need care. Setting up your profile takes roughly 20 minutes and will provide the doctor with your background and health information so he or she is better able to diagnose you and recommend treatment. Your virtual visit will allow you to talk with a doctor, face-to-face, using your phone, tablet or computer’s builtin camera. If you don’t have video capabilities, an online chat function is also available. The doctor will be able to

diagnose, recommend treatment and even prescribe medication. Your primary care doctor does not need to be a WPG primary care doctor to utilize the app. WHS anticipates that the app will be incredibly useful for anyone who suffers from an urgent but non-emergency ailment like a sore throat, rash, earache, sinus infection, fever or cough. Instead of spending hours in an urgent care waiting room, or waiting days for an appointment with your family doctor, you can log in from the comfort of home, or wherever you happen to be. This is partic-

ularly convenient for busy parents, late-night illnesses and unexpected sickness during travel and vacations. The app also contains several features that increase its functionality. Patients have the ability to upload a photo and send it to the doctor for examination. You also have the capability to add another person on the line during the doctor visit. This function is great for students who are away at college and would like their parents to be able to sit in on the visit. Parents are able to add dependents or children under their main account, allowing for the easy selection of pediatric care. It’s also a

convenient tool for the elderly. A family member can attend the visit with them and everyone can stay in the comfort of their own home. Because the service is fee-based, patients are not required to have health insurance. Payment is made online, and is often less than an urgent care co-payment. Wait times vary, but the virtual waiting allows you to see the number of patients ahead of you, view videos and other educational health information, and you can even exit the app and receive a notification when the doctor is available to see you. n
