Kylie Wallach & Marc Zmijowski 11.25.2017

By Andrea Bosco Stehle | Photos by Kristen Wynn Photography Kylie Wallach was working 12-hour shifts as a chemist at Mylan in Morgantown, W.Va., with little social time. On the search to find her match, she joined Match.com and soon after met Marc Zmijowski, a funeral director at Pavlic and Melenyzer Funeral Homes in the Mon Valley. From the very beginning, a sense of humor personified their relationship: with a play on Marc’s career, the couple’s save the date photos were taken in a cemetery and read “till death do us part.” Those vows came to life before 300 guests at Peters Creek Baptist Church in South Park in a late November ceremony. Prior to, the pair posed for first look photos at the Cathedral of Learning in Oakland alongside their large bridal party – 13 bridesmaids and 13 groomsmen. The anticipation built, as did Kylie’s nerves and emotions – it had been less than a year since her grandmother passed away. During photos, a lady bug landed on her shoulder. She swatted it away and it returned, landing on the train of her sparkly fit and flare gown and refusing to leave. It road on her lap all the 10

way to church and flew away just as her dad escorted her down the aisle. “I never imagined my grandma not being there,” Kylie says. “But I knew in my heart she was there with me and that was comforting.” Following the traditional ceremony, guests made their way into the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh-Green Tree ballroom, where they welcomed the newlyweds with bread, salt, rosemary and a shot of Slivovitz, as per Croatian tradition as a sign of fertility and good luck.

Inspired by the bride’s gown, the room was filled with romantic florals in blush tones. Before dinner, Kylie and Marc did their first dance to Andy Grammer’s “I Choose You.” Then, they invited guests to nosh on Signature Dessert’s white cake with raspberry and almond filling, and cookies baked by family and friends. In fact, there were so many cookies, they flipped the cocktail-hour room into a cookie table room! Kylie intended on surprising her mom with a mother-daughter dance to a song close to their hearts, “The Glory of Love” by Bette Midler. Turns out, her mom, who has a beautiful singing voice, recorded the song and surprised Kylie in return. The bride, in her Kate Spade Keds, danced the night away with her groom and their families until she was whisked out by her new husband while wearing his great-grandmother’s scarf on her head, a symbolic Croatian tradition. “You envision your day for so long,” Kylie said. “It was such a fun day. Everything went so well.” Observer-Reporter Weddings 2018 Bridal Guide

Simchah Joyner & Rob Capiola 1.13.2018 By Andrea Bosco Stehle I Photos by Justin Boyd Photography

Proving true love prevails, Simchah Joyner and Rob Capiola began their road to forever in good times and in bad. Five months before their planned May 2018 wedding, Rob’s father was given six weeks to live following a diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia. They hurried to move their big day up to January and did so with ease. “We planned everything in a month to make sure he could be there,” Simchah says. “He was only around for two weeks to the day after the wedding. It was like he knew. I’m just so glad he could be there. A few days before he passed, he was calling me his new daughter. I’m so glad we could do that for him.” The emotional day was extra special for the couple, who was married in a beautiful ceremony at the Omni William Penn Hotel in Downtown Pittsburgh. The bride donned a sheer, delicate dress with floral touches, a style she unexpectedly fell in love with. She tucked a pair of cuff links that belonged to her late father in her draping bouquet of large white lilies and sparkly accents. In the tight time frame, Simchah curated much of the reception decor using Pittsburgh Wedding Flea Market, Etsy and Amazon. Pretty pieces in blush pink and rose gold were on display at J. Verno Studios, where the newlywed’s 110 guests gathered to celebrate. Much like how they felt that day, Simchah and Rob did their first dance on “clouds” to Bob Marley’s “Is This Love” with effects by SoundWaves Event Group. Centerpieces made with branches, blush pink roses, white pearls and gold bows filled the tables as guests noshed on bites by Sausalido, and of course hundreds of cookies, including the bride’s favorite – carrot cake cookies – baked by family and friends. The couple’s tasty almond cake by Giant Eagle featured fresh strawberries and strawberry filling. “Everyone did a really good job,” says Simchah. “Our vendors were so unbelievably helpful. It all worked out perfectly.” One of her favorite parts of the day? Seeing Rob’s face at the altar. “I walked down to ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow,’ a song that brings up so much emotion for both of us in a good way,” Simchah says. That night, the fun continued during an after party at the Birmingham Bridge Tavern. Simchah and Rob, who both work in sales, are currently planning their European honeymoon to Paris, Barcelona and Croatia, where Simchah hopes to don her wedding dress again for photos. 12

Ciara Yingling & Arthur Heilman II 07.29.2017 By Francesca Sacco I Photos by Megan Wylie Ruffing, Wylie Images

It wasn’t love at first sight for Ciara Yingling, 28, and Arthur Heilman II, 27, but persistence paid off. The couple met on the dating app Plenty of Fish in January 2014, and had their first date at a Columbus Blue Jacket game in Columbus, Ohio, shortly thereafter. Fast forward to June 2016, when Arthur proposed at a restaurant within walking distance of Nationwide Arena, where they had their first date. “It was a big deal,” Arthur says. “I had her girlfriend come in from out of town and surprised her.” Ciara says Arthur “nailed their engagement on the head,” and the newly-engaged couple immediately celebrated with family and friends at a congratulatory brunch thrown by Ciara’s parents. But their happiness was temporary halted after Arthur’s mother passed away from breast cancer and Ciara’s father became ill. “Our wedding was a day of celebration following a tough year,” Ciara says. The couple, who wed at the Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church, in Wheeling, W.Va., celebrated their nuptials with a reception at Oglebay Resort. Special moments, like having Ciara’s dad put on her veil and headpiece and Arthur sharing a special dance with his older sister, remain highlights. Ciara, an operations project manager at a mortgage company, and Arthur, a police officer, honeymooned at the Secrets Maroma Beach Riviera in Cancun, Mexico, and live in Columbus.

Nicole Bell & Ryan Chmura 6.10.2017 By Nicole Barley I Photos by Elizabeth Victoria Photography Though they worked in the same community for years – Ryan Chmura as a police officer, Nicole Bell as the school district’s director of special education – their paths never crossed. Even after they were introduced by a mutual friend, the timing wasn’t right, because Nicole was dating someone else. Ryan, however, remained hopeful and persistent. A few months later, they shared a first date, where, after ordering ribs, Ryan learned that Nicole is a vegetarian. “I like glitz and I am a bit of a girly girl. He likes tractors and farming,” says Nicole, who realized that, in the end, those differences didn’t much matter. “Ryan’s just the sweetest guy and that’s what won me over. He was the nicest gentleman and still is.” The couple was engaged at The Tara Country Inn in Sharon, Pa. Although every sign that evening pointed to yes – Ryan running mysterious errands in the afternoon, a romantic dinner at their favorite restaurant, a bottle of Champagne – Nicole began to doubt. (Plus, she checked for a ring box and couldn’t find one!) It wasn’t until after dinner, as they strolled around the property, that Ryan proposed. They returned one year later, on a sunny day in June, to be married in that same spot. Nicole’s father escorted her down the aisle, to Pachelbel’s Canon in D, to the grand stair32

case at The Tara, where they were wed by Pastor Wayne Rapp. Promising to be each other’s “partner in life and my one true love,” Nicole and Ryan said “I do” in front of 135 guests. The animal-loving couple honored their beloved Weimaraner, Jasmine, who had passed away earlier that year, by lighting a candle in her memory. Next, it was time to celebrate on The Tara’s tented patio. The theme? “Purple bling!” Everything shimmered, from the three-tier bedazzled cake and glittery cookies, to the crystal-adorned centerpieces and chandeliers lighting the evening. Not to mention Nicole’s high heels, completely covered in rhinestones! The evening included sunset photos at the lake at Tara, and a first dance to “Johnny Cash” by Kid Rock. Nicole credits her mom, sister and friends for making the wedding day run so smoothly. “My advice to any bride is super plan so that you can take in every moment,” she says. The next day, the couple donned their wedding attire once more for a photo session with Nicole’s show horse, Only Mist Once, affectionately known as Roger. Rather than leaving for their honeymoon, the couple headed off to a horse show on Monday morning. They hit the beach in July, unwinding in Riviera Maya. Observer-Reporter Weddings 2018 Bridal Guide

Margaret Beckom & Chris DiNardo 12.30.2017 By Francesca Sacco I Photos by Redford Photography

Although Chris DiNardo, 37, and Margaret Beckom, 31, occasionally crossed paths in their 20s, the pair didn’t start to date until Halloween of 2016. The couple, who claim they always had bad timing, finally connected with help of Margaret’s older brother and Chris’s college roommate, Thomas. They’ll never know if it was a planned or chance encounter, but they haven’t been apart since that fateful meeting. “Our hearts started racing once we saw each other,” Chris says. “The rest is history and everything has fallen into place.” After proposing on a vacation in San Diego in February, they tied knot in Las Vegas in July without family and friends knowing – so as to not ruin their Dec. 30 nuptials at Bella Sera in Canonsburg. “We got married by Spock,” Chris says. “I got my ring in the gift shop of the Gold Nugget. Tamlynn Bachetti & DJ McDade 9.23.2017 By Nicole Barley I Photos by J. Jane Photography

Tamlynn Bachetti and DJ McDade met as neighbors in the residence hall at California University. On New Year’s Eve five years later, DJ popped the question – though, Tamlynn ruined the surprise. While walking to the Ice Rink at PPG Place with friends and family, she insisted that DJ tell her what he was carrying in his pocket. “I knew it wasn’t his keys. I’m nebby!” she says with a laugh. Unable to keep it a secret any longer, DJ asked, “Do you want to do this now?” before dropping to one knee. Immediately, Tamlynn burst into tears of excitement. Needless to say, they didn’t make it to the skating rink. DJ and Tamlynn requested a low-key rehearsal dinner of beer, pizza and cheesecake. They wed the next day, on a perfect fall afternoon at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church. The location held special meaning for the bride, as her grandparents were the first couple married in there in 1962. The couple stopped to take photos on the grand staircase and gazebo at The Residence at Hilltop Personal Care Facility, where Tamlynn works. A number of her residents joined the wedding, and the couple returned later to share slices of wedding cake. “It was a special day for me. I wanted it to be special for my residents, too,” she says. Next, they celebrated with 350 guests at the Donora Borough Building, sharing their first dance to “My Kind of Crazy” by Brantley Gilbert. Tamlynn paired a handmade birdcage veil with an Alfred Angelo Disney Fairy Tale Collection gown, a fit-andflair, New Orleans-inspired dress with elaborate beading. The real standout? Her fuchsia hair, styled in loose, romantic curls. “DJ knows I always do different colors, but he didn’t know until he saw me the night before at the rehearsal dinner. It was bright, vivid purple and pink. That was my ‘wow’ moment.” Not to mention, her hair perfectly matched the bridesmaids’ plum dresses. The bride requested an “extravagant” cookie table, and she was not disappointed! The nearly 300 (!) dozen cookies spanned six tables and include traditional favorites like Lady Locks, biscotti, pizzelles and tiny cannoli. Guests took heaps of goodies home in containers that read “I Stole These Cookies from Tamlynn & DJ’s Wedding!” “We didn’t have any left!” says Tamlynn. The couple recently grew into a family of three, thanks to the addition of their dog, rescued from Action for Animals Humane Society – a Tennessee Brindle named Cosmo. 36

Playing dress up Bridal-styled shoot brings Pittsburgh women together By Harry Funk As a salon owner who makes it a point to keeps up with trends, Upper St. Clair resident Tamara Artnak has taken part in a concept that’s catching on: bridal-styled shoots. The idea is to take photographs and video of a bride-to-be sampling varieties of the various products and services that go into planning a wedding, with the resulting images helping to promote the vendors involved. Artnak, who owns Luxe Hair Salon in Collier Township, decided to take the initiative to organize such an event. “This particular one, I really wanted to focus on women,” she says. “There are a lot of women in business who are popping up, and we all help each other.” She travels often to New York multiple times a year for training and inspiration from all the latest in the bridal industry, and she shared her thoughts about the shoot with Carolyn Klasnick-Brooks, co-owner of Post Script Films in the South Side. “She and I put our heads together, and we just started thinking, we really need to bring these women of Pittsburgh together,” Artnak says. “It would be really nice to have our own work that we can show our clients.” Meanwhile, she recruited future bride Paula Simmons, South Fayette Township’s recreation director, to serve as the model for the shoot, which took place in September at Bar Marco in the Strip District. “We really prepared well beforehand, and I think that was the key to making it a good shoot,” Artnak says. Donating the props was Tricia Derry, owner of Vintage Alley Rentals in Crafton Heights, which supplies period pieces for film sets, weddings and other special events. Photography was by Leeann Marie of Cecil Township, who strives for “images that truly tell the story of your wedding day,” she says on her website. “Coming from an engineering background, I also have a strong focus on organization and professionalism.” Along with Luxe taking care of hair styling, lash extensions and makeup, other participants in the shoot were: Wanderlust Weddings and Events, Bethel Park. Co-founder and event producer Samantha Loshelder worked on de38
