Summerschool 2015

SUMMERSCHOOL Objectives This course will offer you different methods to improve your creative potential and experience collaborative working. We will offer you tutorials to develop and visualize your own ideas relating to Design, Interaction, Media and Urban Spaces of Berlin. You will therefore have inputs from several invited experts. As well, you will undertake some inspiring explorations of Berlin´s hot spots of design, museums and urban life. There will also be a workshop of creative body work in the nature of Berlin´s surrounding countryside. Design Thinking and Design Prototyping will empower you to produce some concrete results.

Who is this course addressed to?

This summerschool workshop is open to students with strong interest in collaborative working and in creative explorations. You should enjoy working together with others, be open for experiments and be interested in learning several tools of interactive objects and environments. Design and technical skills are not necessary.

Methodology Learning by seeing, exploring, researching, modeling and comparing: A mix of theoretical lessons, explorative field trips and discussions.

Introduction to Design In the first week you will get an introduction to design, especially industrial and communication design. You will learn about the roots and history of modern design and get a short overview of the themes and tasks for the next three weeks. Trips to Berlin‘s design hot spots like the International Design Zentrum or the Werkbundarchiv (Museum of Things) will get you immersed.

Design Thinking The visualisation and designing of your ideas relating to your task setting, Design Thinking and Experience Prototyping are the main themes of the second week. We will give you the foundation of the systematic tools for this playful and popular design innovation method. After two days of intensive collaborative working at btk, Berlin and greater Berlin will be your playground for experiences and exploration.

Design Prototyping The last week is dedicated to giving you the tools to prototype your ideas. We will support you with hands-on workshops in sketching, paper prototyping, physical prototyping and media spaces.

A final presentation will give you the opportunity to get broad feedback from all summer school participants.

INNOVATION & DESIGN

In dem Kurs Interaction & Design wollten wir innnerhalb von drei Wochen Studenten aus verschiedenen Nationen mit unterschiedlichem Wissenstand zu produktiven Teams zusammen führen und ihnen als „No Designers” Grundlagen der Gestaltung und Interaktion vermitteln. Die Aufgabenstellung für die Studenten bestand darin im Hinblick auf sinnvolle mediale Dienstleisungen explorativ die Potientale unterschiedlicher Orte in Berlin zu erkunden.

Nebenbei und zwischendurch sollten durch Gast-, Impulsvorträge, Workshops und Übungen die dafür nötigen Skills vermittel werden. An zwei Tagen fanden Exkursionen nach Dessau in die Bauhaus-Universität und nach Drahnsdorf in ein altes Gutshaus statt.

»TIMEMAP« Anstelle einer festen linearen Struktur ging es uns um ein Netzwerk von Angeboten und Übungen mit unterschiedlicher Verzweigungstiefe, die am Ende zu einem konkrete Ergebnis führen sollen.

Schwer vorstellbar, dass dreissig Studenten aus unterschiedlichen Nationen es in diesem Klassenraum zwei Wochen lang aushalten werden. Aus dem drögen Lehrraum für Frontalunterricht sollte eine kreatives Spielfeld für kreative Lernformen werden. Dafür gab es verschieden Planungspiele in denen am ersten Tag auch die Studenten einbezogen wurden.

DESIGN THINKING ALS EINE METHODE FÜR KREATIVE PROBLEMLÖSUNGSPROZESSE...

Design Thinking ist eine kreative Problemlösungsstrategie, ein bewährter Ansatz, um Menschen über die Auseinandersetzung mit einer bestimmten Fragestellung zusammen zu bringen. Denn eine der Grundideen von Design Thinking ist, dass gerade komplexe Probleme am besten im Kollektiv, das heißt durch das Zusammenspiel unterschiedlicher Standpunkte und Kompetenzen, gelöst werden können.

BENÖTIGT »SETTINGS« FÜR EIN GUTES TEAMWORK UND INSPIRATION...

In Bezug auf unseren Sommerworkshop haben wir diesen Prozess vor allem als ein gemeinsames, als ein soziales Event bzw. Erlebnis geplant. Dabei war uns ein bestimmtes Setting wichtig. Dies bezog sich auf die Seminarräume, die zu einer ebenso inspirierenden wie erholsamen Lernumgebung umgestaltet wurden.

Hier sollten Sozialformen möglich sein, die man in einem rigiden und disziplinierenden Seminarraum eher nicht vorfindet: z.B gemeinsam auf großen Kissen liegend über ein Problem zu sinnieren, sich in eine überdachte Sofaecke zurück zu ziehen oder sich den Ort der Kollaboration selbst zu gestalten.

Aber auch die zur Verfügung gestellten Materialien, bis hin zu den Reagenzgläsern für „Proben” der später zu explorierenden Orte gehören dazu.

»CULTUREL PROBES« Die Vor-Ort Recherchen in den verschiedenen Stadteilen Berlins sollte mit allen medialen Hilfsmitteln und allen Sinnen vorgenommen werden, wobei auch habtisch und taktil interessante sowie ortsbezeichnende Elemente, soweit sie für den Ort entbehlich waren, mitgenommen wurden.

Erkundung eines Ortes mit allen Sinnen (im Body & Space Workshop). Einige der besuchten Orte wurden auch noch einmal mental aus der Frosch- und Vogelperspektive durchwandert, um zu neuen Ideen zu kommen. Die Sitzkissen eigenen sich gut für ein entspanntes Arbeiten, allerdings luden sie auch sehr zum Schlafen ein.

...WOBEI AUCH ORTE AUSSERHALB DES KLASSENRAUMS ALS LERNUMGEBUNG DAZU GEHÖREN Dieses Setting war nicht nur auf den Seminarraum beschränkt, es bezog die ganze Stadt Berlin und ihre nähere Umgebung mit ein.

Wie soll man das verstehen? Im Grunde haben wir den Unterrichtsraum als eine Mitte oder als einen Ausgangspunkt gedacht, von dem aus Exkursionen und Recherchen in kleinen Gruppen in alle Richtungen stattfanden, um für ein gestelltes Problem eine Lösung zu finden.

Die Fragestellung lautete: Wie lässt sich für die eine oder andere typische Gegend von Berlin eine interessante Dienstleistung für Touristen entwickeln? I n der letzten Woche wurden die besten Ideen prototypisch umgesetzt, diskutiert und verbessert, so dass zum Schluss etwa zehn funktionierende, touristische Dienstleistungsideen präsentiert werden konnten.

»LAGEBESPRECHUNG« Früh am Morgen und in den Pausen fanden die Lagebesprechungen (Lauritz Lipp und Cyrus Khazaeli) statt.

Planungen mussten neu strukturiert, Zwischenpräsentationen, Impulsvorträge, Klärungsgespräche miteinander koordiniert werden.

short brief: This house was build 1860 for the prussian minister Otto von Manteuffel. He worked as an interieur minister for Friedrich Wilhelm IV. It is a typical manor house with stables for the agricutulture. Also the further fate was typical: In the times of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) this building was a school, kindergarten and citzien amt. The rear of the building is preserved, meanwhile the frontside was destroyed in GDR Times.

DIE HERAUSFORDERUNGEN Da die Studenten mit Berlin noch nicht vertraut waren, haben wir die nach unserer Meinung interessantesten zehn Orte zur Erkundung für innovative Dienstleistungen vorab ausgewählt und die allgemeinen Ortsmerkmale auf Setkarten zusammengefasst.

Die Studenten sollten sich für eine Areal entscheiden um daraufhin in den folgenden Tagen ihre Feldforschung zu betreiben.

TAG 4 TRIP:

DESSAU & WÖRLITZ Das Bauhaus (1919 – 1933), von Walter Gropius in Weimar gegründet, später in Dessau und Berlin ansässig, war die bekannteste Kunst- und Gestaltungsakademie des 20. Jahrhunderts und für Viele ein einflussreiches Vorbild.

Interdisziplinäres Denken und Arbeiten in den Bereichen Kunst, Design, Handwerk und Architektur war beispielhaft. Der neuartige Aufbau des Studiums in Vor-, Werk- und Baulehre hatte von Anbeginn den Praxisbezug zum Ziel. Gesellschaftliche Erfordernisse, zeitgemäßes Entwerfen und Produzieren unter Verwendung neuer Materialien und der industrielle Herstellungsprozess wurden aufeinander bezogen.

Der Einfluss auf die Entwicklung der verschiedenen Kunstrichtungen und Designdisziplinen im 20. Jahrhundert ist enorm: die Auffächerung der abstrakten Kunst und heutiges Grafik-, Produktund Industriedesign sowie die moderne Architektur sind tief in der Bauhauslehre verwurzelt.

Ihre praktischen Ergebnisse wie theoretischen Vorgaben lassen sich auch heute noch als Orientierungsmarken und Inspirationsquelle nutzen.

Wir hatten die Möglichkeit, verschiedenste technische Innovationen zu testen. Hier wird die 3D-Brille „Oculus Rift“ noch durch eine Wärmelampe und einen Ventilator unterstützt.

TECHNOLOGISCHE PERSPEKTIVEN Dieser Tag stand ganz im Fokus der Praxisrelevanz von Innovationstechniken für Unternehmen. Unter der Anleitung von TrendONE haben wir exemplarisch Produktinnovationen für das Unternehmen Tchibo generiert. TrendONE führt aus einer neutralen Position in einen kundenspezifischen Innovationsprozess.

Der Workshop startet mit einer Impuls-Keynote, in der branchenrelevante Micro-Trends vorgestellt werden. Sie dient als Inspirationsbasis, mit der der Kunde im Anschluss selbst kreativ ans Werk gehen kann. TAG 6 WORKSHOP: DRAHNSDORF // AUTOR: ANDREA WEIGT

BODY & SPACE

Our body is a vehicle of awareness. Bodywork helps to explore how to enhance creativity by using the whole self. From early education we learn to focus on our mental level and forget to include our bodies sensibility. In this workshop playful exercises in nature help to reintegrate the physical and emotional intelligence into the creative process.

Often a workshop starts out with a movement exploration. Sensations of the body are the first focus. They trigger emotions and inspire the imagination. Images appear which are drawn or otherwise presented visually. Through writing the experience can be connected to ideas, themes and stories. The method can circle back so that themes and images can inspire a new round of movement to refine the outcome. Technology Required: Tablet with Location Services, Gyroscopic Sensorr and Camera - this is standard on todays tablets and smartphones.

Rules of the game: playing in teams of 2, 4 different starting points, Trivia questions which can be answered via YES / NO, End point: the hive. Information needed to give the right answer is placed throughout the garden and can be „found“ be moving arround and watching the display.

The winner gets to give a plant a nickname and a coupon for seeds of that plant

Der alte Bahnhof mit seiner charakteristischen Backsteinarchitektur ist das zurückgebliebendes Relikt einer vergangenen Zeit. Bahnhöfe waren ein zentraler Bestandteil des kulturellen Gepräges des Berliner Umlandes. Neben dem üblichen Personenverkahr wurden die Berliner durch diese mit Nahrungsmitteln versorgt. Sie waren zudem Ausstiegspukte für viele Sommerfrischler. Heute stehen viele Bahnhöfe leer. Die Aufgabe bestand darin für diesen verlassenen Ort an den alten Lebensadern Berlins ein zeitgemäßes Nutzungskonzept zu entwickeln.

COUNTRYSIDE:MANTEUFFELS HERRENAUS & Tag am äußersten Rand unseres Recherche-Gebiets: Im Sinne unserer Idee, dass ein Denk- und BAHNHOF Ein Gestaltungsprozess auch ein Gemeinschaftserlebnis sein kann, haben wir alle Studenten für einen Tag in den Projektraum Drahnsdorf geladen, um dort mit gemeinsamem Essenkochen, mit einem Body & Space Workshop (Seite __) , mit Recherchen, Wanderungen und Lagerfeuer den Tag zu verbringen.

Drahnsdorf steht stellvertretend für zahlreiche strukturschwache Dörfer und Landschaften rund um Berlin. Ganz in der Nähe des alten Herrenhauses, dem Zentrum unserer Arbeit, liegt ein verlassener Bahnhof.

Dieser wurde zu einer unserer zehn Recherche-Areale. Eine Gruppe stellte sich die Frage, wie man das kleine Bahnhofsgebäude wieder zu neuem Leben erwecken könnte. Könnte es ein Internetcafe, ein Tante-Emma-Laden, eine Werkstatt werden? Ausgehend von solchen naheliegenden Ideen spannte sich der Faden weiter hin zu einer Idee, die den Bahnhof als Ausgangspunkt und Kommunikationszentrum eines Land-Gardening und Food-Sharing Projektes vorsieht.

Ein erster Versuch sich einen Überblick über den Ort zu verschaffen. Das spätere gebaute Modell vom Bahnhof mit seinem Nutzungskonzept hat sich leider nicht erhalten.

RESULTS: ZINEB EL OMARI, NAIMA OMANI, TAHIRI JOTEY

LITTLE TURKEY: KOTTBUSSER TOR Our task was to design a real place in the neighborhood of Kottbusser Tor in Berlin-Kreuzberg which bridges cultural and commercial aspects of orient and okzident.

Research Poverty and drugs appeared in this neighborhood in the 60’s. That made German citizens leave it. It then hosted Turkish immigrants who searched for cheap housing even if uncomfortable. Actually, during the Cold War, the government subsidized West Berlin, which needed more manpower and hired Turkish labor workers. As the Turks were expected to work and then go back to their country of origin, nobody thought immediately about their integration. Turkish community was marginalized.

Even today many Turks in Berlin have ”small” jobs and are not very well integrated into the Berlin community.

Persona We chose to work on a persona who is in his twenties and has Turkish native parents: Kazim Mezut, Age : 23, Profession : server Ideation To address this issue, we designed Kotti Mall, a combination of a small shops, a cultural center and an App. It is supposed to be beautiful and clean and to mix Turkish with German culture. It has two bicultural floors (Oriental and Occidental shops and food) a garden terrace and a wall for night projections about both cultures.

The digital part of Kotti Mall is a smartphone App which only works if you are using the wifi of the mall. The functionality and content has to be so unique, that people come to this place to contribute und benefit from the content provided. The main function is to switch your perspective. Every snack bar, shop and cultural offering is represented in the App. If you tell the App what you are doing, the App switches perspective and presents to you, what someone with a different cultural background would have chosen, would have done. INSIDE-OUT: DAS BETAHAUS „Once allotted to our hotspot: betahaus, we discovered that it was a start-up possiebe all the tools, rooms, risirse and machinery, to help a young, single person or persons, to self-produce.

At the basis of this experience lies the coworking experience, which consists of brainstorming and free use of ideas. but perquanto betahaus is efficient, and inspiring on the inside, the building is anonymous and inappropriate for large activities that take place.

So, thinking that the activities of meetings and events or workexperience were not enouth, we decided to focus on the possibility to set in on the exterior without necessarily changing its architecture. Focusing our energies on the concept of the relationship between inside and outside, we decided that we arranged panels of different colors and different bright and where there was a brick wall, between the window and the window, through a provision that would make the optical effect of ascent (more divided at the base, and thicker at the top, the top floors of the building).

The system works thanks to sensors, placed in each room of interest, six areas, of betahaus, able to detect the presence of people inside them, users betahaus, equipped with magnetic card-mail, and then through a system numerical identification, vary the intensity of color of a panells will base the number of people occupying a given area.
