A DISTINGUISHED DOWNTOWN DESTINATION

A HISTORIC CITY, A HISTORIC INN

Originally built in 1892 by Waring P. Carrington and Martha Williams Carrington, Two Meeting Street Inn is deeply rooted in romantic history. Martha Carrington’s father left a $75,000 check on her satin pillow as a wedding gift, which was used towards building the home. On their fifth wedding anniversary, the Carringtons gifted each other two stained-glass Tiffany windows, which were installed on the front of the home and remain in place today. The Inn overlooks the Williams Music Pavilion in White Point Garden which was built in 1907 by Martha Carrington as a memorial to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Walton Williams, the original owners of the Calhoun Mansion. The house remained in the Carrington family until 1946, when Minnie Spell Carr, who lived across the street in the Ross Mansion at 1 Meeting Street, bought it and transformed it into an upscale bed-and-breakfast that became a popular destination for wedding receptions and for newlyweds and couples seeking a romantic getaway.

South Street Partners purchased the Inn from the Spell family in 2022 with the vision of restoring the Queen Anne Victorian mansion into a luxurious amenity exclusively for Kiawah Island Club Members. The preservation of the historical elements of the home was at the forefront of the restoration. Eddie Fava and e. e. fava architects led the sensitive renovation and restoration project with a comprehensive plan that ensured the original character and details were maintained while incorporating completely new mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems for a more enjoyable guest experience. Tupper Builders is highly regarded for their restoration and preservation of historic properties in downtown Charleston.

The thoughtful designs for the interiors and exteriors were inspired by and pay homage to the history of the Inn and its historical Charleston backdrop. By infusing modern craftsmanship while retaining authentic features–like the Louis Comfort Tiffany windows and ornate oak paneling installed by the original owners in the 1800s–Tammy Connor Interior Design achieved a fresh take on the Victorian design that is layered with storied arrangements of found and new pieces, unique collections complemented by textural and natural materials, color palettes rooted in nature, and above all, comfort. Landscape architect, Elizabeth Pope, carefully worked around the property’s original plants, accentuating the majestic live oaks and preserving existing historic materials and hardscape elements. The landscaping utilizes a classic Charleston palette with a modern twist, blending traditional plantings with vibrant pops of color and texture that evoke the charm of Charleston’s streets South of Broad.
