LUCKY VEGA
LUCKY VEGA (IRE) Fee: $19,250 | 15.3hh Lope de Vega (IRE) x Queen of Carthage {USA}, by Cape Cross (IRE) The first Group 1-winning son of the elite sprint sire Lope de Vega (IRE) to stand at stud in Australia, Lucky Vega enters his second season at stud in Yulong following a successful season at The Irish National Stud where he covered a full book of mares. At age two, Lucky Vega produced a convincing win on debut in Naas. Just 2 starts later he blitzed his rivals by 3.5 lengths in Ireland’s premier two-year-old race, the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes. In doing so he not only beat The Lir Jet who came off a solid Royal Ascot win having beaten America’s sprinting sensation, Golden Pal, but he also defeated the European Champion 2YO and subsequent World Champion 3YO in St Mark’s Basilica by 4.5L. Previous winners of the Group 1 Phoenix Stakes are breed-shapers Danehill Dancer and Johannesburg. On returning at three, Lucky Vega notched an impressive third in the first British Classic of the year, the Group 1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket. After a game effort in the Group 1 Irish 2000 Guineas he finished his career with an impressive 2nd in the stallion-making Group 1 St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot, in what was an incredibly competitive year for 3YO European milers. His first Southern Hemisphere season saw him cover 119 mares, including the exceptional Group 1 winner Unforgotten and Miss Barley, the dam of Gytrash, exploiting the successful Lope de Vega x Fastnet Rock cross.
“Lucky Vega was one of the very best sprinter-milers of his generation in Europe. He had a lot of early speed to win a 1200m G1 as an early 2YO. He raced 6 times at G1 level and finished 4 times in the top three. He is by the elite stallion Lope de Vega and he is free of Danehill, not bad for an $18K service fee.” Louis Le Metayer Astute Bloodstock.
