Your Kids Are What They Eat Michelle Campbell is a qualified chef and one half of the ‘dynamic duo’ behind local business KinderChefs. Passionate about preservative and additive-free cooking, Michelle shares her top tips for healthy eating – and it all starts at the supermarket!

Leave the kids at home It’s difficult to stay focused when you have screaming kids in your trolley, leaving them at home means you’ll have more time to select the foods you really want, rather than the first ones you see!

Shop on the outside of the supermarket aisles Most supermarkets are designed the same way, with fresh fruit and veg, dairy, meat and breads on the outside aisles and processed foods in the middle. We really only need the foods that are on the outside aisles.

Only Organic Chef Michelle from KinderChefs shows us how to make some tasty meals that are free of anything artificial.

Fruity Danishes

Buy as much organic produce as possible

(makes about 12 mini ones)

It might be more expensive but organic food does have less pesticides, antibiotics and other chemical residue often found in other foods. Buying organic is also better for the environment and helps support small, local farmers.

Get the kids to add the sultanas and currants and roll the pastry

Cook as much healthy food at home as you can

2 tbsp sultanas

A freezer is a busy person’s best friend – make a bit extra every time you cook and freeze it for later in the week. Being organised means you will resist quick and easy meals that are often less healthy.

Become familiar with the really nasty additive and preservative numbers Once you know these numbers you will be able to make informed choices about the foods you choose for you and your family.

12 kidsdomain

kidsdomainmagazine.com.au

Ingredients ½ apple, grated

2 tbsp currants 2 tbsp dried apricots, chopped 1 tbsp honey ¼ cup raw sugar ½ tsp mixed spice Milk for glazing Puff pastry 1. Preheat oven to 200°c. 2. Put all of the filling ingredients into a saucepan and cook on low heat, stir until the sugar dissolves. Leave to cool. 3. Place the cooled mixture in a food processor and blend until slightly smoother. 4. Lay out the pastry sheet and spread the filling all over the sheet. 5. Roll the pastry into a sausage roll shape and, using a sharp knife, cut into six even pieces. 6. Brush the tops of the pastry with milk and cook in oven for about 15 minutes or until golden brown.

Tasty Chicken Nuggets (makes close to 1 dozen)

This recipe is gluten, lactose, dairy, additive and preservative-free. Get the kids to help grate veggies and roll the nuggets

Ingredients 500g organic chicken breast fillets 1 clove garlic, crushed finely ¼ small brown onion, finely diced ¼ cup carrot, grated ¼ cup zucchini, grated 2 tbsp parsley, chopped Sea salt to taste 2 cups gluten-free plain flour Olive oil for frying

1. Chop the chicken into medium-size pieces and put into a food processor with onion and garlic. Process until it resembles mince texture. 2. In a mixing bowl add chicken mixture, carrot, zucchini, salt, two tablespoons of flour and parsley. Mix until well combined. 3. Take a teaspoon of the mixture and roll in your hand as if making meatballs. Repeat until all of the mixture has been used. Place on a plate, cover and put in fridge for about 30 minutes. 4. Put a non-stick fry pan on medium heat with a good glug of olive oil. Take chicken out of fridge and flatten a little to make a nugget shape, roll in flour and gently fry until golden brown. Alternatively, you can make little star shapes or half moon shapes, have fun and let the kids get involved!

The Organic Stamp How do you know you’re really buying organic? Consumers should look out for the iconic organic bud logo and the Organic Growers of Australia sunflower logo to be sure they’re getting the real deal. The word ‘organic’ is not certified in Australia, which means any grower or producer of food can claim to be organic, with many fooling consumers using packaging that contains words such as ‘natural’ or ‘chemical-free’. Make sure you’re getting what you’ve paid for by checking for the proper certification. For more information, and a list of accredited certifying organisations, visit www.kidsdomainmagazine.com.au.

t may sound chaotic, but graphic designer and owner of Nest Studio Carly Schwerdt is at her best when surrounded by children chatting, paint swirling and messy little fingers happily creating. As the owner of the Magill Road studio gets set to celebrate the store’s 10th year, the mum-of-two says that although the Adelaide shop front is now home to a range of products and creative services, first and foremost her aim has always been to “nurture children’s creativity through quality art classes”. “Running the studio has presented many opportunities over the years”, says Carly, but at the helm of all of this is the idea that started it all – and that was the vision to create a space where children could explore the world of art. “I believe creativity underpins all learning, so fostering your child’s creativity is really important for their development. I also believe that play is the most powerful, yet simple, way in which creativity can be practiced and encouraged.” Of course, during the past 10 years the ‘Nest’ has grown considerably and it is now also home to a range of vibrant adult art classes, an inspirational studio store and successful textile design house, Umbrella Prints.

“The label Umbrella Prints is owned by myself and business partner Amy Prior. We have been hand screen printing and producing organic fabrics together for over six years now – our love of gorgeous patterns and colour brought us together and continues to inspire us”, she says. Umbrella Prints’ fabrics and products are now sold all over the world, from Tokyo to Vienna, the US and the UK. Carly hopes the label’s 2013 collection, which is soon to be released, is just as well received. “This time around we have also included an exhibition of new artwork and an exciting new jewellery line - there is no time for rest,” she laughs! And this is just the way she likes it – a bustling store, overflowing art classes, a successful textile business, two young children... and the list goes on! “It’s not easy,” she adds, “but I wouldn’t have it any other way!”

Party at Nest Studio! Stuck for ideas for your child’s next party? If they’re the arty type why not head to Nest Studio? Carly and the girls offer fabulous kids’ art parties, where children design their own screen prints for a takehome cotton bag. For more information visit www.neststudio.com.au.

Basking in her success, Katie-lee has now started an Adelaide event and has also recently embarked on a number of other ventures in the South Australian capital, taking over the previously named North East Kids Market and getting set to launch her very first Lifestyle Expo in April. “The Lifestyle Expo is targeted at the entire community and will

right pops of colour, a selection of classic replica pieces and a scattering of painstakingly restored and homemade treasures come together to create this fun and instantly inviting space. Mum Natalie is quick to point out that six-year-old Alex initially requested a ‘pink’ room. “Like most little girls she insisted on pink – I coerced her into compromising with some pink, mixed with blue, red and yellow!” The result works, with the mish-mash of bright hues working as a fun accent to the more traditional fabric-covered toy chest and remodeled doll’s house. “I bought the doll’s house second hand and fixed it up for Alex for her third birthday – I painted it in the same colour as the outside of our house and as Alex’s cubby house.” But Natalie’s craftsmanship doesn’t end there, the clever mum-of-two also created all of the artwork and reupholstered the toy chest, which takes pride of place beneath the plantation shutters. “I love making things for Alex’s room, so it is forever changing! I especially love the reupholstered chest; it had been sitting in my dad’s shed for years, I found some blue patterned fabric from designerguild.com and used it to recover the top. It now doubles as a seat and storage for some of Alex’s toys.”

Other key pieces include a replica Eames coathanger from livingedge.com.au (“the colours went perfectly in her room!”) and the David Trubridge pendant light. “When the light is turned on it creates a beautiful floral pattern on the ceiling – Alex loves it,” says Natalie. “I adore great bed linen and all of Alex’s comes from Out Of The Cot on Magill Road. The cushion that sits on her replica Barcelona Chair matches the fabric used to cover her toy chest, and it is also from designerguild.com. “I love continuing to find or create unique pieces – the latest addition is the large colourful artwork that hangs over her bed, I painted this myself. Next on my list is a gorgeous cowhide rug from Mark Tuckey. I saw this beautiful rug at his store on a recent trip to Sydney and I just love it. Actually, everything in the store was beautiful!”

Growing Up Five-year-old Harvey’s room gets a makeover with a selection of carefully chosen vintage toys and sentimental artworks. photography APPLESEED PHOTOGRAPHY words LAURA MAPPAS

right splashes of red, colourful bunting and a scattering of quirky vintages finds give Harvey’s room a decidedly rustic charm. The clever mix of old and new adds warmth to the high white walls of this otherwise minimalistic space. Mum Anna admits she “hates clutter”, so her youngest son’s room was always going to be sparsely decorated, with just a few colourful vintage toys and special artworks on display. “Our home is quite contemporary, which I like, but the challenge with a new home is they can sometimes lack a bit of soul and character. To try and overcome this I have thrown a few old, eclectic pieces, such as the original vintage fireman helmet that used to belong to my husband when he was a boy, in with modern buys such as the name canvas from KidZone and the brightly coloured bunting from Out Of The Cot.” The mix works, with the coordinating colours and carefully chosen toys giving Harvey’s space a more grown-up feel. “Harvey is five-and-a-half now so he has outgrown the toddler phase, but is obviously nowhere near his teenage years yet. The challenge with this room was to come up with something in between.”

“We decided on a double bed for his room – we tend to play musical beds in our house so we thought by having a bigger bed we would at least all get a decent night’s sleep! It’s also great at story time as our eldest son Hudson jumps in and we all snuggle together. The quilt cover, which was picked up from David Jones last year, has been teamed with a cowboy and Indian comforter set from Seed.” Other key pieces include the Expedit Bookcase from Ikea (“you will find at least one piece of Ikea furniture in most children’s rooms – I must say, the Expedit Bookcase has been brilliant!”), a David Bromley painting and an Indian headdress, which was picked up on a holiday to Bali a few years ago. “I love the vibrancy of Harvey’s room, and I love that when I look around I see sentimental pieces that bring back special family memories – like the little piano accordion toy that my grandfather used to bring out at family get togethers, and the framed picture that my cousin hand-drew for Harvey for his birthday a few years ago. I love that she made it with love, it’s these little special touches that make this space work, giving the room the character and soul that it needed.” kidsdomainmagazine.com.au kidsdomain

Safe Sleeping Safe infant sleeping bags have several benefits says Dorothy Crosby, education manager from SIDS and Kids South Australia. An infant sleeping bag that is the correct size for your baby, with a fitted neck, armholes or sleeves and no hood, prevents the need for extra bedding, reducing the risk of your baby’s face and head becoming covered. Sleeping bags also encourage babies to sleep on their back, the preferred sleeping position in the prevention of SIDS, and prevent little legs getting caught in cot rails. Here are a few of our favourites…

Black & White “I A fascination with historical photographs and a love of simple, clean design inspired local photographer Simone Hanckel to photograph special family moments in black and white. words LAURA MAPPAS

t was always my dream to be a writer,” says Simone, “but it wasn’t until I picked up the camera that I realised my passion was actually telling stories with images rather than words.” After the births of her two sons, Morgan and Toby, Simone says her vision became clearer – she wanted to create a career that incorporated her love of photographs and her new fascination with parenthood. “Creating a career out of something you love to do is such a blessing,” says Simone, who has now been photographing families in and around Adelaide for over 10 years. “Photographing children is a joy – I walk in as a stranger and by the end of the sitting I usually have one child on my lap, another holding my hand and many promises to come back and play again!” “What drives me to record these special moments is the feeling that time is moving so swiftly. I know what it means to watch

your children transform before your eyes, my oldest is now in high school and you wish you could just stop for a moment to drink them in! That’s why photographs are so important to a family.” The decision to shoot only in black and white was instinctive with Simone’s vision tending towards emotion, symmetry and texture. “Black and white isolates the subject and tells the real story, it is such an extraordinarily powerful medium. My clients also love the timelessness of black and white and how stylishly it fits into their décor. I adore the way little faces shine in a beautiful black and white print. They’re luminescent!” Building a business with a young family was an enormous challenge for Simone, with the most important lesson learnt being that you have to be careful with your time. “Trying to keep strict business hours and keeping a healthy perspective on what needs to be done now and what can be left for later has meant a far happier life for myself and my sons”, she says. “I’m mindful that being present in our own lives is just as important as documenting those same beautiful moments for other families. My boys also get a wonderful lesson in watching their mum create success from sheer drive and passion while keeping a peaceful family life.” Creating time for both family and career has paid off in recent years, with Simone receiving multiple awards, including AIPP South Australian Family Photographer of the Year in 2011. However, the real rewards come from the families that welcome Simone into their lives year after year. “Watching a family grow, from that first glimmer of excitement over a new pregnancy to young adults leaving home is an absolute privilege. I couldn’t imagine a better career.” kidsdomainmagazine.com.au kidsdomain

mothers’ group

New mums say local exercise program has helped them shed kilos and beat the baby blues. words LAURA MAPPAS

52 kidsdomain

kidsdomainmagazine.com.au

I

t’s a mothers’ group and a fitness program all rolled into one, and the mums of Unley, Burnside, Prospect and Glenelg are raving about it! The Bay City Strollers aim to help new mums recover from the rigors of childbirth, while offering the added bonus of a supportive network of new friends. The carefully constructed workouts have been designed to specifically cater to mums at different fitness levels or stages of recovery from childbirth. Core stability, the reintroduction of cardiovascular fitness and strength training are all components, and for the more advanced mums there is the target of weight loss and getting back to their pre-pregnancy goal weight. But it’s not just the physical workout that mums benefit from, it’s also the social stimulation. “One of the greatest benefits we see with the mums is the social networks that they develop,” says Bay City Strollers’ director Tamie Moody. “Just being able to

get out of the house, enjoy a stimulating environment and share some stories with other mums, as well as getting a great workout, is hugely rewarding.” According to Tamie, exercising in a group environment offers a massive psychological boost and may even help ward off the baby blues. A University of Melbourne study supports Tamie’s claims, saying exercising in the first three months after giving birth can as much as half the risk of developing post-natal depression. Postnatal depression affects approximately 15 percent of all childbearing women, equating to around 35,000 Australian women per year. “Regular exercise can help prevent it,” says Tamie, “the results are improved self esteem, more energy, renewed confidence and a feeling of accomplishment.” Sessions are held every day and bookings can be made online at www.baycitystrollers.com.au or by calling 1300 882 129.

Juggling Act

We talk to a successful South Australian ‘mumpreneur’ to find out how she juggles family and business…

I understand that when you started out you were selling your products at a local market...

Melanie Seears from On The Gro www.onthegro.com Bit about your business On The Gro is a platform for designing and manufacturing unique and functional play solutions for children that are affordable and practical. I am always innovating new ways to make playtime fun for children, without the bulk and expense that often comes with purchasing new toys.

Describe your style My designs are quite eye catching, be it in the fabric design or the packaging, but it’s the simplicity along with the added functionality of the products that tends to really get people’s attention. I often hear people say, “why didn’t I think of that?”

54 kidsdomain

kidsdomainmagazine.com.au

I started with the concept of the Kush-ee® Mat and had some prototypes made, which I slipped into some handmade covers (thanks mum!) and sold them at the markets. They were really to test the waters and to see what type of response I would get from the public. Needless to say I was overwhelmed with the response and feedback, which ultimately encouraged me to dabble in manufacturing and greater volumes. From there the concept grew, the designs were refined, the product ideas broadened and, a couple of years on, we’re now stocked nationally offering over 10 different products.

What have been the main obstacles along the way?
There have certainly been a few ups and downs, some of which I didn’t really prepare myself for being new to owning my own business. One of the things that sticks in my mind is just how much money it takes to get a business up and running. It’s true, you have to spend money to make money!

How have you managed to juggle home life and running a business? Growing our family while the business was growing has had its challenges. When I first started out we had one child. We now have three children all under three and a half years. I have often had to combine family and work, taking our babies to trade shows with me over the years. It truly becomes a family business! However, I couldn’t do any of it without the amazing support from my husband and our families, who continually allow me to pursue my dream.

Valuable lessons learnt When things get tough it’s important to reflect on just how far you’ve actually come. A business will always throw at you twists and turns, it’s just the nature of life – but it’s how you handle them and how you persist that is the true accomplishment.

What’s next? On The Gro is rapidly expanding overseas. We’re now stocked across Asia and South Africa. Our aim this year is to expand into the UK, as well as release another new and exciting children’s product.
