1. Preheat fan-forced oven to 200°C. Line a baking tray with baking paper then add pumpkin and rosemary, season generously with salt and drizzle with olive oil. Roast for 30 minutes or until pumpkin is tender and starting to brown. Take tray out of the oven and drizzle with Verjuice. Return to oven and cook until Verjuice has evaporated. 2. Meanwhile, heat milk with bay leaves in saucepan over high heat until almost boiling, remove from heat and leave to infuse for 10 minutes. Remove and discard bay laves and keep milk hot. 3. Melt butter in saucepan over medium heat until nut-brown. Add flour and cook until flour and butter come together, stirring for several minutes. Remove from heat and slowly pour in hot milk, using a whisk to

1/2 tbsp freshly grated or ground nutmeg 125g grated Parmigiano Reggiano 200g large macaroni 75g Persian goat’s feta, crumbled 125g grated cheddar

prevent any lumps forming. Return to the heat and stir with a wooden spoon for another 10 minutes or until the sauce is shiny and coats the back of the spoon. Add nutmeg and grated Parmigiano Reggiano, stirring continuously until the cheese has melted. Cover the surface of the sauce closely with plastic film to stop a skin forming and set aside until needed. 4. Cook macaroni in a large saucepan of boiling salted water until al dente, drain and place in a large mixing bowl. Add the cheese sauce to the macaroni and mix well, add the pumpkin and toss through gently. Gently stir in the crumbled feta. Transfer macaroni mixture to a large baking dish, top with grated cheddar and bake for 10-20 minutes or until brown. 5. Serve immediately.

Country Chicken and Mushroom Pies Serves 4 Ingredients

For the Sour Cream Pastry

50g unsalted butter, softened

200g chilled unsalted butter

6 free-range chicken marylands

250g plain flour

Sea salt

125ml sour cream

Freshly ground black pepper 450ml chicken stock 7 large mushrooms 1/4 cup unbleached plain flour 200ml cream 2 tbsp oregano, thyme, Flat-leaf parsley, chopped 1 free-range egg 1/4 cup milk

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 200°C. Butter a baking dish and add seasoned marylands. Roast for 20 minutes and rest for 15 minutes. Heat the stock. In a large saucepan, fry sliced mushrooms in butter. Sprinkle the flour over the mushrooms and stir to coat evenly. Gradually stir in the hot stock and cream. Simmer gently until thickened. 2. Fold chopped chicken meat and herbs through mushroom mixture and season. Refrigerate until chilled. 3. To make the pastry, pulse butter and flour in a food processor. Add the sour cream and continue to pulse until the dough starts to incorporate into a ball. Wrap in plastic film and refrigerate for 20 minutes. 4. Roll the pastry to 3mm thick and cut to line pie dishes, leaving a lip over the edge. Cut out six smaller rounds – these are the pie lids. Fill the cases with chicken mixture. Egg wash the pastry lip and seal the lids in place. Trim the pastry and score the top of each pie. 5. Egg wash the pies and refrigerate for a minimum of 20 minutes. Increase oven to 220°C. Bake pies for 20 minutes. Reduce oven to 180°C and bake for a further 5-10 minutes until golden brown. kidsdomainmagazine.com.au kidsdomain

Cotton wool kids

With Australian childhood obesity rates continuing to climb, and more children than ever before developing self-esteem related issues, it’s time to un-do the far-reaching ‘cotton wool kid’ phenomenon. words JOSIE ROSE MILTON

T

hink back to your childhood... what are your most precious memories? I remember climbing trees, digging through soggy soil in search of worms and flying down the gravel hill on my yellow bicycle – at one point, hitting a big rock at full speed, which launched me over the handle bars and face first into the gritty terrain. I hurt myself, but I also learnt to avoid rocks. There is no denying that the world has become a more dangerous place, but isn’t that exactly why children need the tools to cope and adapt accordingly? Studies show that today’s children are a third less likely to play outside as their parents were when they were young. Recently, an Australian school banned handstands and cartwheels. Another prevented hugging. Kindergartens are stopping children from sitting on Santa’s lap and candles on birthday cakes are becoming a thing of the past. Instead of encouraging kids to walk or ride to school, parents are driving them due to an increased fear of ‘stranger danger’, road traffic and crime. Yes, these are real risks, but surely if we teach our children about these risks and provide them with the knowledge and tools to cope they will grow up with a real understanding of the world and possess the confidence to deal with and overcome potentially dangerous or risky situations.

Self-confessed cotton wool mum, Doreena, 26, admits to being over-protective of her three young sons. “My boys are not allowed to go to their friends’ houses, catch the bus or play outside without supervision. I worry about them all the time – I think I’ll still worry this much even when they’re 21”, she explains. Jenni Pearce from Connect Psychology in Hyde Park specialises in child psychology and behavioural problems and urges parents to allow children to take small risks and learn from their own mistakes. “Parents have become extremely intense about parenting. They want to be the best parent with the best child, which often means preventing that child from ever feeling anxiety, fear, disappointment or grief – but these emotions are an unavoidable part of life. Parents need to ask themselves, ‘what’s the worst that can happen?’ As a child gets older, the risks become greater, but if you allow your child to take small steps from a young age you’re arming them with the confidence to make decisions and assess situations”, says Jenni. “Over protected children will go one of two ways as they get older; they will either become very timid and hesitant towards risk-taking, or they will rebel by taking extreme risks. Both of these situations are very worrying for parents.”

So whether it’s allowing your child to ride their bike down the street, play with a puppy, roll around in the dirt or do a handstand, these experiences all arm children with confidence and resilience. Little things Local mumpreneur Amanda Callcott from Brown Paper Packages talks about her daily juggle of after-school activities and trips to the Post Office! photography APPLESEED PHOTOGRAPHY words LAURA MAPPAS

I

Online Finds www.brown-paper-packages.com.au

16 kidsdomain

kidsdomainmagazine.com.au

t all started three years ago when Amanda, the now proud owner of Adelaide-based online store Brown Paper Packages, was getting set to pack her youngest daughter, Hattie, off to school. “After 12 years of raising children it dawned on me that I was going to be home alone,” she laughs, “I thought for a moment about returning to work, but couldn’t imagine going back to the long and unpredictable hours of advertising and marketing.” “I had always dreamt of starting my own business, I suppose a lot of mums do when faced with the possibility of having to return to the workforce. For me, it was the thought of potentially missing out on the girls’ after-school activities, concerts, sports days and the like that really put me off. I had been so fortunate to be able to devote those early years to my children and I couldn’t image life any other way.” Amanda’s penchant for gorgeous gifts sparked a thought, and from there she began trawling websites searching for ideas and inspiration for an online store that she would “fill with unique treasures from around the world!” “The initial set-up took about six months, with website design and sourcing stock

taking over my entire life! When we finally ‘opened’ the first sale was so exciting – we hadn’t done any advertising at that stage and, of course, hadn’t received any press, so the fact that someone had found us was exhilarating!” Since those early days Brown Paper Packages’ bespoke products have appeared in a long list of newspapers and national publications, such as Real Living, Home Beautiful, Woman’s Day and Grazia. “Our most surprising press to date was a feature in The National, a United Arab Emirates publication. Sometimes you forget that what is happening in a studio here in Adelaide is being seen by potential customers on the other side of the world!” Amanda’s dream of building a business that allowed her to choose her own hours has come to fruition, although she is quick to admit that having flexibility during the day to duck out to the children’s after-school commitments sometimes means then having to stay up until midnight to get her work done. “It can be a juggling act sometimes, and there are certainly times when the girls complain about the two trips a day we make to the Post Office“ she adds, “ but I wouldn’t have it any other way. For me it’s the best of both worlds.”

Silver story

A remote wheat and sheep station is the last place you would expect to find a booming jewellery business – yet that’s exactly where sisters Lisa O’Keefe and Stacey Clayton are running successful fine jewellery brand Koolaman Designs.

N

amed after the sprawling country property where they have set up shop, Koolaman Designs’ owners, young mums Lisa O’Keefe and Stacey Clayton, represent the best of Australia’s new breed of entrepreneur – the online mumpreneur. Inspired by the love for their children, Lisa and Stacey set about designing unique jewellery to celebrate life’s special moments. The names of loved ones or personal messages are handstamped on sterling silver and Australian 9ct gold jewellery, creating bespoke symbols of love. Koolaman Designs’ legion of fans includes some of the country’s most stylish celebrities. Danni Minogue, Lindy Klim, Chris Brown, Masterchef Australia winner Julie Goodwin and Katrina Chambers from The Block are all fans. Channel 7’s Johanna Griggs wears her Koolaman Designs pendant every day (the ‘Mia’ pendant was a Christmas gift from her husband). With six children between them, and the demands of life on the land, the sisters face unique business challenges. “It’s funny how the peak seasons on the farm always coincide with the busy times for Koolaman Designs” says Lisa. “Mother’s Day is sowing, Father’s Day is shearing and Christmas is harvest!” The secret to their success? A unique, quality product, belief, passion in the business, incredible customer care and fast delivery. Koolaman Designs’ Facebook page is a wall of customer gratitude to their dedication and the sisters’ success has been recognised with both the AusMumpreneur Awards and the Handmade Mumpreneur of the Year 2010. In just five years, Lisa and Stacey are harvesting the rewards of their online business model. They have woven the DNA of love into Koolaman Designs to create a thriving online jewellery business that celebrates love and family. kidsdomainmagazine.com.au kidsdomain

Cornes, was one of the Expo’s Gold Sponsors and, in an effort to “give back” Katie-Lee donated 100 per cent of the gold coin entry fee to the SA charity. “Six kids every day are born with heart disease in Australia, that’s an alarming statistic,” says Katie-Lee. “By donating we’ll hopefully be doing something to help.” So, what is the difference between Kooky Kidz Market and the all-new Kooky Expo? “We really wanted to create an event for everyone,” explains Katie-Lee. “The Kooky Kidz Market is a great day out for mums, dads and kids, but the Expo has something for the whole community – from parents and kids to grandparents and locals wanting to just pop down and enjoy the entertainment while grabbing a bite to eat.” A fresh and local selection of food available

from the Kooky ‘Eat & Seat’ Zone included mouthwatering macarons from Lil Miss Macaron, steaming baked potatoes, authentic Brazilian sweets, organic coffee and more. While the bustling pamper section, which was a huge hit with teens, mums and grandmothers, offered massage, mini makeovers and hair and make-up. “The combination of great buys, fresh South Australian food and entertainment definitely seemed to work,” says Katie-Lee of the Expo’s success. “The next one will be held later in the year, so keep an eye out on our website for more details!” Next Adelaide event 14 July, 2013 at Greenwith Community Centre. nterior designers will tell you that the key to making a minamalist space work is to choose a stand-out piece of furniture and make it a focal point. The second rule of thumb is to select a single colour or colour theme and to subtely repeat it throughout the room in a effort to create a cohesive space. 13-year-old Maisie has cleverly ticked both of these boxes with a clean, clutter-free space that, while being awash with white and free of any of the teenage paraphernalia that usually fills a young girl’s room, still remains full of fun. “The room makeover was Maisie’s first move from a young girl’s room to a teenage room,” says mum Amanda of her eldest daughter’s recently updated space. “She’s very mature for her age and was very definite about what she wanted. First and foremost she wanted a space that was tranquil and peaceful, somewhere she can do her homework and relax.” The minimalist space certainly fits the brief with the vintage-style white iron bed taking centre stage, alongside a white Ikea desk and a RAR Eames Reproduction Rocker from online store Milan Direct.

Splashes of colour have been added with a bright geometric cushion, a pink Moroccan leather pouffe from Brown Paper Packages, an industrial hanging pendant light from Empirical Style and a string of jumbo felt ball garland that strategically hangs over the fireplace. A selection of paper artworks, including the Paper Cut Heart Art and the Marcelle Crosby Folded Dress artwork that is positioned above the bed, subtly echo the muted colour choices. “Maisie has a keen eye for detail, she actually spends a lot of time reading design books and home and lifestyle magazines so she knew exactly what kind of look she was after,” laughs Amanda. “Ultimately, I guess she has cleverly created a room that will grow with her and can be easily updated by simply changing a few accessories.”

anary yellow and a scattering of soft greys, vintage-looking furniture and crocheted linen in a swath of nondescript neutrals create a sleep space that is whimsical, retro, fun and functional all at the same time. While pregnant with her first child, Starla, mum Hannah picked up a beautiful birch tree wall decal from Adelaide’s Bowerbird Bazaar Markets, which she used as a starting point for her newborn‘s nursery. “We didn’t know whether we were having a boy or a girl, so I wanted to keep the colours neutral,” says Hannah. She chose soft greys and yellow and, piece by piece, she began to create what is now a peaceful haven for threemonth-old Starla. “I knew I wanted a whimsical theme, so the birch trees were perfect – from the same market I also picked up a grey crocheted rug from Ladedah Kids. The cot is from Out Of The Cot on Magill Road, it’s obviously brand new but we loved it as it reminds my husband of the cot he had as a baby. It also fits in with the vintage-style theme and with the décor in the rest of our home.” Keeping up the yellow colour theme proved difficult, so Hannah had to resort

to a bit of DIY – a lick of paint on an old Bentwood-style chair and a bit of restoration to a chest of drawers from Ikea helped to create instant interest and colour. “I painted the top of the Ikea drawers yellow and picked up some Dr Seuss drawer knobs on eBay.” The drawers are now used to display a few carefully selected toys and special keepsakes, including ‘Giffy the giraffe’ (“my husband’s favourite toy from when he was a boy”) and a collection of Winnie the Pooh books that were special gifts from Hannah’s parents. “As far as toys and accessories go I have kept things fairly basic, with the exception of a yellow doll’s house that sits in the corner. I bought it a few years ago with plans to do it up properly with wallpaper, lighting, the works, but instead it just sat in the shed! So, I’ve now given it a coat of yellow paint and plan to do it up as Starla grows – who knows, maybe one day it might even become an heirloom!”

MINI PICASSO Bright pops of colour, an artistinspired food table and a bunch of creative kids is all you need to create an unforgettable art party. words REBECCA ATKINSON

C

olourful invitations attached to an oversized paintbrush gave partygoers a glimpse of what was to follow at birthday boy Sebastian’s 5th birthday celebration, and on the day the pint-sized ‘artists’ weren’t disappointed! A sign at the front door welcomed the little guests and ushered them toward the backyard, where the fun and games began. Crafty entertainment was provided by local business Splodge, who held a ‘Messy Monster Art Session’ that saw the children create a robot out of putty, paint the walls with spray paint and then make personalised hand prints to take home. Face painting was next on the agenda, with roaring tigers being the clear favourite on the day. The bright and cheery art theme was also carried through to the dessert table, which was decorated with bright paper pom poms from local business PomPom Wonderful (www.etsy.com/ shop/POMPOMwonderful) and colourful paint tins spelling out the birthday boy’s name, which were creatively hung above the long table by stepmum Rachel from Red Apple Events. The art-inspired food was displayed on paint palettes and coloured picture frames and included artwork cookies sitting on mini easels, cake pops featuring mini paint brushes, veg sticks in hummus cups and a fruit platter laid out in the colours of the rainbow. The finishing touches were the creative party bags, which were a welcomed departure from the usual sugar overload – art packs containing paint brushes, watercolour paint and a canvas so the kids could continue their creativity at home.

GIDDY UP! Hay bales, a horse-drawn cart and even ‘feed’ bags as favours, this clever mum thought of it all! styling LITTLE SWEET STYLING

“M

olly has always loved horses – she puts on dressage shows for us in the backyard with a hobbyhorse and is always wearing her riding boots – so the theme for her 5th birthday was a given”, laughs mum Rebecca. A pony party at the picturesque Four Oaks Farm in Littlehampton was the perfect setting for an afternoon of horsing around. “It’s such a fantastic location,” says Rebecca. “The kids rode horses and had a turn on the horsedrawn cart before hopping aboard an old fire engine for a quick ride through the paddocks!” All this activity was followed by a sit-down lunch in a nearby barn. Rebecca, who is the owner of Little Sweet Styling, served lunch in personalised Kraft lunchboxes (available from www.littlesweetstyling.bigcartel.com) and presented the homemade cake on a vintagestyle dresser. “I have always wanted to use an old dresser for a desert table – I found this one in a hard rubbish pile, cleaned it up, put on some new handles and decorated it with handmade fabric garland. I was pretty happy with the end result!” Rebecca is clearly a dab hand at sensational birthday party styling, but she insists all of this can easily be recreated at home. “Moving away from the traditional food table adds interest and little extras such as ‘feed bags’ as favour bags (available from www.jgsnook. com.au) and sandwiches wrapped in countrystyle fabric add a great farmyard touch.” kidsdomainmagazine.com.au kidsdomain

DOUBLE TROUBLE Let’s face it; children’s birthday parties can be hard work. There’s the planning, the theming, the food… and the list goes on. Follow this mum’s lead and combine the bash! photography SUSIE STYLER PHOTOGRAPHY & COTERIE PHOTOS

T

ake a brand new cubby, some cleverly decorated food tables and six friends and what do you get? The perfect combined birthday bash! Mum-of-three Toni, owner of Fairydust Stylish Stationery, decided instead of hosting separate parties for her two youngest she would this year combine the celebrations and host one knock-out party the kids would love! “Theming proved a bit difficult,” says Toni. “We had to avoid anything too girly or boyish. I decided to use the kids’ new cubby as a starting point and developed the lemonade stand/garden party theme from there.” Toni chose red and pink as a colour palette and decorated the food table in two separate halves – pink on one side and red on the other. Colourful handmade paper flowers from Beetlebomb Everlasting Blooms finished off the table decorations and were again colour themed – red and blue for boys and pink and yellow for girls. The talented Jenna, former My Kitchen Rules contestant and owner of local business Le Pink Petite, supplied the delicious raspberry and lemon tarts, cookies and cupcakes. Aside from the deluxe cubby, which was decorated with bright tissue garland from Facebook store Blush Loves Mint, the other standout feature was the personalised lemonade stands. “A friend made these stands for me (she’s super creative!) and I decorated them with wire bird cages, colourful macarons and, of course, a glass drink dispenser filled with lemonade!”

Escape To The Country A move to the beautiful Yorke Peninsula inspired this mum-of-two to kick-start her own homewares store.

Bit about your business The White Shed is an online homewares boutique that sells beautiful furniture, cushions, prints, lamps and decorative accessories for the home. The idea originated in 2010 when I saw a gap in the Yorke Peninsula market for contemporary and modern country homewares.

Describe your style The White Shed is all about timeless interiors – modern country with a little bit of French influence. The focus is on black, white and neutral interiors.

How did you start out? After months of sourcing a range of beautiful furniture and homewares we opened our doors in February 2010. During those early days we operated from a converted shed on our farm, Ambleside, which is located on the Yorke Peninsula, but after Internet orders began to take over we decided to close our doors and re-open as an exciting new online store.

How have you managed to juggle home life and running a business? It is not easy! When you work from home you constantly work – ‘I’ll just reply to this email” or “I’ll just send this order confirmation” are things I often hear myself saying. Trying to create a balance means you often need to work long, late hours. The great thing is that it is flexible, if you want to have a day off to attend sports day you can. It just means somehow catching up on those hours later.

Valuable lessons learnt Stick with your own theme and style. You can’t cater for everyone. Put things in your store that look good together. An odd mix of products, colours and styles doesn’t sell well and you will have items ‘left on the shelf’. People come to know your style – my customers follow my blog, Facebook page and Instagram because they genuinely like my style.

What’s next?

What have been the main obstacles along the way?

Streamlining and reshuffling the store so it has less categories and some different products. This will make it more user-friendly for customers and more time efficient for me!

Delivery expenses to country SA are huge and therefore cut into the profit margin. Also the cost of sending orders out is always far more than the $10 flat delivery fee. Unfortunately, online shoppers don’t want to pay huge amounts for shipping so it is another cost I have to absorb and a problem I would still like to find a better solution to.
