Games begin Imaginative play aids in language development, literacy skills and social skills – oh, and it’s fun too! words LAURA MAPPAS

emember when kids used to play hopscotch and hide and seek? Times have changed but even in a world of iPads, kids’ laptops and toys that talk, there is still room for some good old fashioned fun – and more importantly it is this innocent play that leads to better language development and social skills for our kids. Speech Pathologist Jacqui Kendall from South Australia’s Department for Education and Child Development defines imaginative play as “any sort of play that children engage in that requires them to look beyond the ‘here and now’.”This might include using a cardboard box as a cubby house or making a cup of tea using a plastic tea set. Aside from being fun (and free!), imaginative play aids in the development of a range of important skills, such as language skills, problem solving skills and social skills. “It builds your child’s understanding of the world,” says Jacqui, “for example, when children play ‘mums and dads’ or ‘schools’ they are mimicking what they see in real life. This kind of play also encourages children to build their own vocabulary, broaden their understanding of different concepts, learn to listen, follow instructions and practice ‘using’ their language, all of which are pivotal in developing language skills and, later on, literacy skills.”

So the importance of this kind of play, in a world full of high-tech toys, is paramount and the role of us as parents is key in encouraging the use of our child’s imagination. “We have found that more and more children starting school are lacking these skills, so much so that we are now encouraging teachers to set up play stations in the classroom and suggesting students engage in different imaginative scenarios, like ‘at the restaurant’ or ‘at the supermarket’. While it may look like the kids
are just playing, it’s important for parents to understand that there is so much more going on. We need to value this as part of the curriculum and recognise the many skills a child is developing during ‘play time’.” It’s easy to instigate – a pretend tea party here or a make-shift cubby house there is all it takes to set the foundation for this kind of important play. And while you’re there why not take the time to join in? “Kids love nothing more than your time and attention,” adds Jacqui.

good life “ Business isn’t easy, it’s a bit of luck and a lot of hard work”

he’s got four kids, an immaculate home and, along with her husband of 31 years, Dino, is at the helm of one of Adelaide’s longest-running and most successful café chains, Caffé Primo. ‘How does she do it?’, was one of the questions at the top of my list when I met with the vivacious, immediately likable Lisa Vettese at the Tea Tree Plaza café. “I’m very lucky, I don’t need a lot of sleep,” was Lisa’s quick response. “Even as a 16-year-old I had two jobs, I like to be busy.” These days, while Lisa and Dino only run one of the 24 Caffé Primo outlets in South Australia – the rest are franchised – the mum-of-four’s days are still jampacked. On the morning I met with her she had been up since 5am sewing sequins onto a calisthenics outfit in preparation for a production on Friday night and had taken son Michael to a specialist appointment – all before our meeting at 10am.
“On a normal day I always come past the café in the morning – sometimes I’ll do some paperwork, on busy days I’ll still do the dishes. The kids say I’m too slow on the computer,” she laughs. The fact is the ‘kids’ now all play an integral part in the running of this successful family business. “The recipe to our success, if you like, is the fact that this is, and always has been, a family-run business. When people ask me if they should go into business I say not if you aren’t going to manage it yourself – no one will run your business like you. It isn’t easy,” she says, “it’s a bit of luck and a lot of hard work.” “The toughest and most exhausting times were definitely when the kids were young. Our youngest Michael was only six when we started the first Caffé Primo and it was a juggling act. Both Dino and my family also ran their own businesses so we didn’t have the option of dropping the kids off to be babysat, we had to take them with us. I can remember in the days before Caffé Primo when we owned three Pizza Havens and I would have the kids in the back of the car while I was delivering pizzas!” “On reflection, I suppose the key to juggling family and business is that you still need to allocate time for one another. Make sure you give your kids your time, even if it means you have to stay up late at night to finish the paperwork, as those early days define how they see the world.” kidsdomainmagazine.com.au kidsdomain

unctionality is key,” says the mum-to-two and owner of online store Cot Couture. “Your child has to feel comfortable in their room – but it can be comfortable and look good too!” Jessica’s handmade linen collection features everything from colourblock designs to farm animals and traditional damask prints. “My favourite is a vintage range called Whimsy Meadow,” says Jessica. “My two boys and I all have special teddies that we have had since we were born – my son Dillan has a red teddy called Hollee, my son Logan has Bun Bun and I have a handmade bear called Mary. All three come to life in this collection!” “I guess when I started out back in 2007 my goal was to supply children’s bedroom accessories that are beautiful to look at and create a sense of individuality. I wanted mums and dads to have the resources to create spaces for their child that reflected who they are. That said, kids are continually growing and changing – my two get their rooms re-vamped every few months with new quilt covers and linen. We have just finished redecorating so after years of sharing they both finally have their own rooms, which now means double the number of re-vamps!” Of course, not everybody redecorates as often as Jessica (perk of the job!), which is why her collection also features timeless designs that can not only grow with your child but last through wash cycle after wash cycle. “All of the fabrics in my collection are pre-washed so the linen is guaranteed not to skrink or go out of shape, and the range of room décor, hand-painted canvases and unique accessories have all been road-tested by my boys!”
How she started… Jessica started her love affair with linen back in 2004 when, on a whim, she enrolled in a sewing class at her local Spotlight store. “I didn’t really enjoy sewing clothes, but I loved making homewares, especially cushions and blankets,” she says. “I didn’t like the range of fabrics that were available locally, so I used to buy my fabrics online from America. Then one day in October 2007, while I was on my exercise bike, I had an idea. I jumped off, ran to the computer and frantically began to write them down. Why couldn’t I create my own fabrics? There was definitely a market for it – and my husband and mum thought it was a good idea – so off I went!” “I did a lot of research and sourced fabrics that were special and unique – I decided early on that if I was going to do this I wasn’t going to compromise on quality, it was an important part of what I was trying to create. Handmaking fabrics is a lot more work, but I desperately wanted my products to be stylish and durable, and so making them myself was the best way of achieving both. I tried to source as many things as I could locally as I found this gave me more control over the process, and from there everything kind of fell into place. I had a number of suppliers and I was putting my own stamp on the collection with my personal designs.” After a lot of trial and error, hard work and persistence Jessica’s business has taken off. Five years later she is now about to start the next chapter – “this is a very exciting time for Cot Couture,” she says. “I have invested in a new 12-foot computerised quilting machine and I am about to launch a new project called Gryffinwood Studio, which will offer designs suitable for older children and their parents.”

hen Logan, five, was given the chance to choose a theme for his new bedroom – mum and dad Jess and Jason recently finished lengthy renovations after which both of their boys graduated to their own rooms for the first time – he didn’t hesitate. Superheros, please! “Logan’s always been a free spirit and a bit quirky,’ says mum Jess, “so when he had his heart set on a superhero theme I knew I couldn’t just create something using commercial toys and décor, it had to be a bit unique.” Jess started with a feature wall – of the Gotham City skyline! “I had my eye on this wallpaper from an English decorating website called Tangletree Interiors but I had no idea where I was going to use it, until now!” The wallpapered feature wall cleverly reflects Logan’s superhero theme while at the same time creating a contrast against the coloured adjoining wall. As for the furniture, a Queen bed (yes, that’s right, he’s only five but mum Jess insists “he’s the same weight and height as his eight-year-old brother so we thought we might as well invest in a bed that will
see him through to his teens!”) takes centre stage. “The bedhead and ensemble are from Forty Winks at Munno Para, their range and service is fantastic, and the cushions and linen are a mix from Cot Couture, Harris Scarfe and Spotlight. I always opt for solid colours on beds as cushions are so much easier and cheaper to change with trends. I made Logan the Superman cushion from fabric he chose and he actually made the little black and white zig-zag one by himself (with a little help from me!)”. Logan’s favourite furnishing is his yellow sun pendant light – “I wanted to add some colour in the corner of the room and this light from US site Lumens.com was perfect. A
combination of soft greys and natural wood were the starting point for mum Kirsty when it came to creating a peaceful haven for her newborn daughter, Winter. Kirsty wanted to design a nook in the master bedroom so Winter could be close by during those first few months, but was determined the ‘make-shift’ nursery would not turn into an unsightly space. “I wanted to create a simple, calm space that was clutter-free,” says Kirsty, who is also mum to nine-year-old Jasper and seven-year-old Tulip. “It was also important for me to make sure Winter’s little nook fit in with the style of the rest of the house. Our house is best described as quirky French provincial – I love anything linen and tend to always go for neutrals when choosing furnishings and accessories. I kept all of this in mind when deciding on the cot, furnishings, bedding and other bits and pieces I have put on display.” Kirsty started with a Seed Organic Cradle, which was borrowed from a family member, and added coordinating linen and a French provincial-style armchair. Other accessories include a Mamas & Papas ragdoll (a gift from Winter’s grandparents),
a beautiful dress that was handmade by Winter’s nan and a money box and rattle from local online store For Me and My. “To make sure the area didn’t become over-run with baby paraphernalia I decided to just display a few special gifts,” says Kirsty, who also used cards from family and friends to create a simple feature on the wooden window shutters. For now Winter can enjoy the peace and tranquility of this special space while mum Kirsty gets to work on her “real” bedroom. “I’ve already chosen all of the bedding and the room will be created around this,” she says, adding that the vintage rose on the ceiling of the room has been used as inspiration in the design. “The bedroom will be quite classic but it will also feature a few quirky pieces that will give it a bit of personality, like an original ‘70s fibre optic fountain light I picked up at a Sydney flee market a few years ago. I’m really happy we have finally found a place to put it on display!”

rom the moment guests arrived at Lila’s party they were whisked away to a magical far off land. A land where there was a towering cake in every colour of the rainbow and sandwiches in the shape of hearts. The journey began with guests following the Yellow Brick Road (some left over bricks painted yellow by mum Kate) to the back garden where Event Stylist Lisa from Whimsical Heart had worked her magic. Hessian and blue gingham fabric covered the food table, which was topped with cane baskets brimming with cleverly named bitesized sweets (such as Yellow Brick Rocky Road and Somewhere Over The Rainbow Jelly). “When deciding on the food I always try to incorporate the theme of the party as much as possible,” says Lisa. “In this case, I knew Lila really loved the Wizard of Oz movie so I found out which parts she liked the best and used table props and food to try and represent those scenes.” The result really did take you on a journey – from the Lion, Tiger and Bear Cupcakes (a party favourite!), to the Munchkin Land Juice and handmade pinwheels, every detail was exact. The Wicked Witch’s ruby shoes were even on display, poking out from underneath the cubby! “I sourced the shoes from a Salvation Army store,” says Lisa, “they came up great with a bit of glue and some red glitter!” According to Lisa it’s these little touches that make a good party a great party. A themed sign welcoming guests as they arrive, cleverly named food labels, decorative bunting and beautiful invitations (all supplied by Sassaby.com.au) set the scene for this special day and lots of little guests immersing themselves in the magical world of Oz completed the tale.

f your little girl’s idea of heaven is coloured pink then this pretty party is for you. Teacup biscuits, cupcakes laden with lashing of pink cream icing, fairy bread, fairy floss and popcorn cleverly carried in pink pint-sized cones took centre stage at Emily’s 5th birthday party. Event Stylist Heidi from Adelaide business Groovy Goose says you can easily recreate this look at home. “Paper lanterns and tissue pom poms are very girly and are a great decorative element for any girl’s party,” says Heidi. “It’s also a good idea to look around the house and try and tie in any ‘props’ you might have at home. For Emily’s birthday she wanted a bird theme so we used a vintage birdcage holding handmade fabric birds that was on display in Emily’s bedroom as a centerpiece on the food table. We also used a small ceramic birdhouse and further tied
the theme together using Vintage Swirl Birdie paper for the food labels and invitations.” For older children Heidi’s other pretty party tips include setting up a beauty bar, complete with mini bottles of nail polish and lipgloss in the colour of the moment – pink! This could then extend to the favour bags with miniature bottles of nail polish as a take-home gift. Tying the food in with the theme of the party is also a good idea, as is using beautiful lolly jars and vintage-style drink bottles to add a touch of old fashioned style. “Another fun idea,” adds Heidi, “is to make a batch of cupcakes and set up a decorating table where party guests can decorate their cupcake with pink icing, hundreds and thousands, mini pink m&ms and more. The kids will love it!”

I have a real love for the fabrics and styles of yesteryear – I only use vintage fabrics and buttons in my creations so they are all definitely one-of-a-kind!
How long have you been selling your vintage finds? I always have a little laugh when I think back to when I first started selling them – I was so nervous! My first ever market was a kids’ market in Norwood in 2010, I thankfully had lots of buyers so that gave me the confidence to keep going.
What’s your favourite kids’ shop? I don’t get out a lot at the moment so I usually shop online – I love Larkmade.com.au.
What’s your favourite kids’ homeware brand? Anything vintage!

What’s next? Little Luv recently embarked on a new venture, collaborating with a business partner on an exciting project called Lucky Ducky! The new range of products includes gift cards, gift tags and artworks using vintage kids’ books and games.
Describe your style I create one-of-a-kind age appropriate clothing for girls. I always try to choose bright prints and I love practical clothes. I spend hours each week sourcing fabrics that are hard to find and fit with my brand.
How has your range changed since you first started? When I first opened I had very limited clothing and mainly sold headbands and hair clips. My range has now expanded to include an extensive girls’ clothing range in sizes 000-7, as well as beautiful accessories that compliment my label.
What’s your favourite kids’ clothing brand? I have always loved Bebe – I adore their style and the prints they use.
What’s next? I hope to be able to expand my range to include sizes for older girls and I plan to look into securing some retail stockists during the next six months.
