Balancing Act We all want the best for our children, but how much is too much when it comes to extracurricular activities? words LAURA MAPPAS
14 kidsdomain
kidsdomainmagazine.com.au
Good intentions My son and daughter are five and three respectively and are already enrolled in a handful of activities designed to build skills and confidence. But is their busy schedule really building confidence or is it just wearing them out? Holly Auld, owner of Adelaide-based nanny agency Little Poppins, says, “out of school activities are certainly beneficial for building friendship groups and nurturing socialising skills, however children who come home exhausted after a week full of activities can sometimes develop concurrent behavioural problems as a result”. According to a recent study by James Cook University, however, the opposite can also be true. The study investigated the relationship between behaviour and participation in extracurricular activities in children aged five to eight and showed kids who participated in two or more activities for 80 to 90 minutes per week benefited, with improved behaviour in comparison to those children who did not participate.
Schedule activities in moderation, as well as
choosing activities that are
in line with the child’s age, temperament, interests and abilities Everything in moderation So the key is to schedule activities in moderation, as well as choosing activities that are in line with the child’s age, temperament, interests and abilities. “If an activity is too advanced the experience could cause frustration and if it isn’t engaging the child is likely to get bored,” says Holly. Andrew Davidson, director of Grasshopper Soccer Adelaide, says considering the child’s personality, as well as what you expect the child to achieve, is also important. “The activity needs to be right for the child’s age and sessions should be reasonably short so the child does not become overwhelmed.”
Importance of learning through play In the flurry to enroll our kids in everything from cooking classes and karate to baby ballet and piano lessons sometimes parents forget that the skill-building and confidence boost that comes from structured play can also be gained through unstructured, free play. “Unstructured play allows children to experiment and explore their world,” says Director of Emali Early Learning Sarah Benger. “It also allows children to learn from their own mistakes and experiences.”
We find the best nannies for us, then you. Little Poppins is Holly Auld's agency specialising in the discerning recruitment and assignment of only the best career nannies, babysitters, overnight carers and au pairs. Business Sisters Emma and Alice turned a great idea into an online success story, here’s how… words LAURA MAPPAS
W
Online Finds www.alandem.com
16 kidsdomain
kidsdomainmagazine.com.au
ith a background in commercial textile sales and a passion for interiors and styling Emma Willis made the decision to kick-start her now successful wall art business AL + EM 12 months ago, while on maternity leave with her first child. Joining forces with her sister Alice, the girls began designing their unique range of pin boards, which are now sold in selected stores in South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales, as well as on several online sites. “We came up with this idea about four years ago, but after having my daughter Evie I decided it was the right time to give it a go – I didn’t want to miss the opportunity and for someone else to fill this gap in the market,” says Emma. The sisters launched their online store in June 2012 and were overwhelmed by the response and feedback they received from happy customers. “People were telling us they had been searching for a product like ours – this feedback was amazing and really confirmed to us that we were on the right track!” Following the success of their website the girls began securing stockists in retail outlets around the country, as well as in
a selection of online stores. “Facebook and other social media tools have been a really big part of our business,” Emma adds. “We now have a fantastic online following and this certainly helps get the word out when we are releasing new products.” Sales growth and positive customer feedback has far exceeded Emma and Alice’s expectations in their first year of business. “It’s satisfying to receive your second or third order from repeat customers,” says Emma. “Knowing that they love your products is really something special. “I think our business works because we have a product that is different to anything else on the market,” says Emma. “We really wanted to bring empty wall space to life – why use a boring cork board hidden behind a door when you can turn your pinning space into a feature? “We’re also lucky to have a great working relationship. Alice and I both have a real passion for interiors, and a love of home and family. We’re both mums and so we look to our children for inspiration to create bright, fun and functional pieces that our kids would love!”

T
he theme and design of three-yearold Charlie’s room was inspired by mum Olivia’s favourite Marimekko fabric, the bright pops of green leading the way to what is now a fun, minimalist space. “I had always loved the Bo Boo fabric so I knew I wanted to include this somewhere in his room. I had a canvas custom made and it now happily sits above the mantle,” says Olivia, who is the owner of interior styling studio Liv Mac. Steering clear of the traditional boys’ colour schemes was another consideration, with the bright green colour palette a refreshing change to blues and reds. Other key items include a personalised Ikea wardrobe, which has been given a lick of blackboard paint, and the giant ‘C’ that hangs over Charlie’s bed. Olivia had the huge letter custom made and then painted it herself, once again using blackboard paint for a faded finish. The impressive Kartell Bookworm bookshelf from Space Furniture is also a feature – “I love this bookcase, it adds a touch of whimsy to the room and
it is a practical solution for Charlie’s many books!” Keeping books grouped according to colour is also an easy way to create a great visual. The Kartell Componibili bedside table adds continuity with its classic curved design. “This piece will easily transition to a more mature space as Charlie grows up,” says Olivia. “It’s also a great storage solution for nighttime blankets and teddies!” Other smart storage ideas include the large Lego boxes in coordinating colours and the Eames Hang-It-All, available from Living Edge. “This is a limited edition black Hang-It-All – it’s a more masculine alternative to the classic coloured version and it will again easily transition to a more grown-up space as Charlie gets older.”

nterior stylist Jacinda, from Melbournebased design company Hide & Sleep, was employed to transform this small space for mum Adrianna, who wanted to create an area both of her children, Sophia, three, and Luca, four months, would love. “Adrianna wanted it to be a bit girly for Sophia, but also wanted to create a space that Luca would love and be able to grow into,” says Jacinda. The metal Incy Interiors bed was one of Adrianna’s few requests, she loved the industrial design and thought it would be a style Sophia could use now and Luca could inherit. “We chose the teal colour as this could be used for either a boy or girl and had linen custom made from Red Plum.” Three carefully selected prints by Nelly Ryan were chosen to balance the brightness of Sophia’s side (they also have a unisex theme, making them perfect for this shared space), while a comfy armchair from Noosh Kids softens the space. It also creates a cosy spot for bedtime stories! A book shelf placed at the end of Luca’s Stokke cot is a great place to store both Sophia and Luca’s books, and the modern storage boxes that were installed above Sophia’s bed are home to her many “treasures”. “Sophia has lots of little bits and pieces, so this was a great way of displaying them without cluttering the room.” Tying the two spaces together is the quirky retro curtains, which cleverly add colour, texture and personality. “These curtains were in the original room and Adrianna did contemplate replacing them. I later found out they were purchased on her honeymoon in Rio de Janerio, before she even had children. They’re such a great addition!”

A New Home An iconic drapery store on Walkerville Terrace is now the new home for Parade Children’s Wear. Designer and owner of Parade Children’s Wear Vicky Standish bought her first piece of fabric from the old drapery store on Walkerville Terrace back in 1968. Now, 45 years later, she has set up shop in the heritage store, creating an exciting new home for her children’s fashion boutique. Parade Children’s Wear originally opened its doors in 1994, back then it was a small boutique on Payneham Road before the store made the move to Jerningham Street in North Adelaide. Vicky explains it was a shoulder injury that, after 17 years, eventually led her to shut up shop late last year – “The injury, while incredibly inconvenient at the time, offered me the opportunity to devote some much-needed time to our online store,” she says. With the online boutique and Parade’s busy Facebook page now powering on, Vicky has again returned to her “first love”. “The new store still stocks the same brands everyone loves, such as Bebe, Fox & Finch, the original Marquise baby range and our popular year-round rugby tops, and custom orders are also available.” Parade Children’s Wear, 75 Walkerville Terrace, Walkerville. ARGH ME HEARTIES! Take a feather out of Captain Feathersword’s cap and host a pirate party to sink ships! words REBECCA ATKINSON

enry lives and breathes pirate adventures and treasure hunts so a pirate party was the obvious choice when mum Anna was planning his fourth birthday. Henry and his little guests took to the high seas (Anna’s backyard!) in their finest pirate costumes, swashbuckling toward the ‘Pirate’s Hideout’ (the decorated cubby house). The pirate flag was flying, there was a scattering of handmade signs painted on old timber, bunting, mesh lanterns and plastic skulls on stakes to set the mood. The skull and crossbones symbol also doubled as a fun cupcake topper and drink bottle label. Continuing the theme, Anna, who is also the owner of South Australian-based online stationery business Daisy Loves George, created the ultimate pirate party invitations, thank you tags and take-home treasure bags for all of the sword-wielding guests. After the party games were complete the pint-sized pirates dined on delicious homemade cupcakes and honey crackles, all displayed on a tiered stand. A homemade piñata provided plenty of pandemonium and each of the guests took home goodie bags filled to the brim with chocolate coins, ‘pirate’ bubbles and more.

right bunting in traditional Aztec colours, inventive party games including pass the sombrero, and a food table complete with self-serve tacos made this 11th birthday party a resounding success. Mum Amanda, the artful owner of online store Brown Paper Packages, has a definite eye for detail so it comes as no surprise that daughter Polly’s birthday party was eloquently styled and thoughtfully constructed, from the fun party games right down to the decorative chevon-stamped bamboo cutlery. “To help everyone get into the spirit of the party Polly’s friends were all given a bobble necklace, a colourful set of maracas and a moustache on arrival,” says Amanda. This not only proved to be a great icebreaker, but also provided some fun photo opportunities. The colourful decorations included bright paper fans, tissue pom poms, streamers and Mexican bunting from online store Candy Stripe Cloud, while the food table was brightly decorated with a pink and yellow tablecloth, runner and bright paper tableware. Mismatched metal chairs finished off the inviting setting. Continuing the colour infliction a bright yellow and white chevron overlay took pride of place on the dessert table, creatively positioned on top of a painted grey buffet. Sprinkle cupcakes, candy popcorn, jelly cups and lots of colourful lollies layered in apothecary jars were some of the sweets on offer after a lunch of self-serve tacos, burritos and nachos. After filling their bellies the party guests enjoyed a fun-filled afternoon of donkey piñata, pass the sombrero, pin the tail on the donkey and limbo!
