Oceans: secrets under water!

June 8 is the World Oceans Day. Let’s celebrate and raise awareness of their importance and richness.

O

ceans are the lungs of the planet: they provide us with most of the oxygen we breathe. The same as plants during the photosynthesis, also the sea absorbs carbon dioxide, one of the most important compounds responsible forthe greenhouse effect! Oceans affect both the weather and the atmosphere. They act like heaters in winter and

like air-conditioning sources in summer: their currents deliver the heat from the Equator to the Poles. There are many living beings in the oceans, from giant whales to tiny creatures. Oil spills cause the death of numerous animals and underwater plants. Indiscriminate fishing and global warming are endangering our seas. It is high time we did something!

THE ARTIC OCEAN

THE ARTIC OCEAN

It surrounds the North Pole.

THE INDIAN OCEAN

THE PACIFIC OCEAN The largest in the planet. It takes up one third of the Earth’s surface.

THE ATLANTIC OCEAN

The warmest and saltiest ocean.

THE SOUTHERN OCEAN It covers 20% of the Earth’s surface.

It surrounds the Antarctica.

Did you know that… … 97% of all the water in the planet is seawater? … under the oceans there are mountains, valleys and trenches? … the highest mountain in the planet is not the Everest? It is the Mauna Kea, in Hawaii, whose height is 33,100 ft. Its base is below sea level and its peak emerges above the surface. … sunlight can only penetrate to a depth of 780 ft.? The height of an 80-storey building!

the logo: image is everything • Every World Cup has a different logo, which is very significant because it identifies the country and each specific championship. • The logo was chosen out of 125 different design proposals. • And the winner is… the winning logo is called “Inspiration” and it features three hands jointly raising the World Cup trophy.

the poster Brazil and soccer: only one identity • What we will remember of the official Brazil 2014 poster will be the legs of two opposing footballers fighting for a ball. • The legs are made up of different animals, plants and objects typical of the host country’s culture. • The colors are those of Brazil’s flag (blue, green, and yellow). • Among the animals on the poster, we can see the armadillo, the toucan, and the chameleon. We can also see the beach and the sun.

the mascot An eco-friendly armadillo

• The World Cup mascot loves ecology and goes by the name of Fuleco. • Its name is a combination of the words Futbol (soccer) and Ecologia (ecology) and it was chosen by 48% of the Brazilians who took part in a survey. • It is a three-banded armadillo, a cute little animal which is an endangered species. • Will it become the favorite World Cup mascot ever? What do you think?

the official song Soccer Rhythm, Ole Ola… • The World Cup song is called We Are One (Ole Ola). • It is sung by Jennifer Lopez, Pitbull, and the Brazilian singer Claudia Leitte. • It is great! You won’t stop humming it!

• Yellow and green are the colors of Brazil’s flag, but they also represent the tropical forest, the beach and the sun, which are the three reasons why everybody loves Brazil. o Brasil

World Cup Idols in their childhood!

Great soccer players have always dreamt about being aces; find out how they did it and enjoy the fun pictures from their childhood. Andrés Iniesta He plays in FC Barcelona. When he was 8 years old, his parents signed him up in the junior league of the Albacete Balompié

Club. At age 12, he was chosen by the Barcelona, and he moved there

alone. When he turned 18, his family moved with him. The effort was worth it!

Lionel Messi Known as “The Flea”, he used to be very shy as a little boy. When he was 7, he was admitted in the junior teams of the Newell’s Old Boys Club.

Back then, he was diagnosed with a condition that retarded his bone development. At age 13, he moved to Spain with his family to play in FC Barcelona, which

paid for the treatment he needed. He is the youngest player of the team to have played a match in the Spanish League.

Neymar Jr. This talented Brazilian young footballer plays for the Barcelona, and has become one of the best

players in the world these days. He got his name from his father, also a soccer player.

Neymar Jr. played in the U-17 and U-20 Brazilian National teams, and this is the first time he plays a World Cup.

Cristiano Ronaldo He was born in a very poor neighborhood in a Portuguese island called Madeira. His father used to be the changing- room guard of the

neighborhood soccer team. He began to play there. When he was 10 years old, he moved to Lisbon without his family to play in the Sporting’s

junior team. Nowadays, he is the only soccer player in the planet to have scored goals in every minute of the game, from 1 to 90.

Wayne Rooney As a kid, he used to box, since his father and then his older brother practiced this tough sport. When he was 10, he entered a soccer

club and he did not stop until he became a professional. In England school tournaments, he would score more and more goals every year. He even scored 117,

which attracted the attention of Club Everton’s talent hunters. Manchester United bought him when he was 18 for 18 million Euros.

Mesut Özil He is the star of the German National Team. He was born in 1988 and began playing soccer when he was very young.

His outstanding talent was so rapidly noticeable that he began playing for his home town team at age 8, where he played for 6 years. When he was 14, the professional

team Werden Bremen bought him for an extremely low price. Nowadays, his transfer is worth millions of dollars!

io de Janeiro is a city known all over the world because of its unique natural beauty, its rich history and the infectious joy of the Brazilian lifestyle. It is full of contrasts: impressive modern buildings hiding a magnificent colonial architecture, a reminder of past times when Rio used to be the capital of Brazil. But the most remarkable touristic attractions are its stunning beaches, the Sugarloaf Mountain, and the statue of Christ the Redeemer, located on top of the Corcovado hill. There are two most-significant celebrations to Brazilians: Christmas Eve and the famous Carnival. Maracanazo! This fantastic city is home to the Maracanã Stadium. Built for the 1950 World Cup, -the first World Cup host by Brazil- the Maracana was immortalized after the unforgettable Brazil-Uruguay final match, one of the most prominent chapters in the tournament history. That memorable afternoon, Uruguay beat the host team by 2-1 and became the World Champion. Such feat is remembered as “the Maracanazo.”.

Music on the web

Internet has changed people’s lives in many senses, and one of them is the way in which they relate to music. In this article, we will analyze such change.

T

homas Alva Edison created the first device capable of recording and reproducing the human voice: the phonograph. Since then, its evolution has included the gramophone, cassette players, CD players, and digital format players such as the mp3, among others, which are the ones we know nowadays.

Internet, music à la carte   Not long ago, people bought CDs, which brought from 10 to 15 songs each; then to have varied music it was necessary to buy several CDs from different bands. But the Internet changed it all! Formats have been modified: in a CD there was space for a few songs, but the development of the mp3 has made it possible to record one

or two hundred songs in just one CD! The same applies to the mp3 player. By means of the Internet, you can down-

load your favorite artists’ music and listen to it with any available player: any song you want is at hand. Access

to music, which used to be difficult in the past, has become widely spread thanks to the Internet.

On the web, music can be seen, listened to, and shared. YOUTUBE : When there was no Internet, we had just a few TV channels to watch music videos. That has changed and nowadays, thanks to YouTube and other platforms, you can watch all the videos you want, listen to all the music you like and if you dare, upload your own video.

dations. Napster offers over 17 million songs which you can listen either online or offline from your PC, cell phone or tablet. In addition, by using this app, you are helping artists while saying NO to piracy, since Napster pays copyrights to artists every time you listen to their music.

NAPSTER With the emergence of apps like Napster, you can access an unlimited number of artists depending on your music taste; you can discover new groups or bands by means of your network recommen-

VIRTUAL MUSIC STORES Virtual music stores are also available thanks to the Internet. You can buy music and download what you like the most.

BIOGRAPHICAL COMIC STRIP: Borges Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986). Argentine writer.

Jorge Luis Borges, an excellent Argentine writer and intellectual, was born in Palermo neighborhood, in the city of Buenos Aires, on August 24, 1899. As his family spoke Spanish and English, he learnt both languages from a very young age. He was only six years old when he told his father he wanted to be a writer.

He was appointed Director of the National Library and member of the Argentine Academy of Letters. In 1956, he taught English Literature at the University of Buenos Aires and became President of the Association of Argentine Writers. As regards the political sphere, in 1982 he opposed the invasion to the Falkland Islands by Argentine troops.

In 1914, his family moved to Europe and settled in Switzerland. Back then, young Borges wrote a few poems in French while he was in high school. His family returned to Argentina in 1921. Going back to his home town was the source of inspiration for his first book of poems, “Fervor de Buenos Aires.”

As a kid, he was afraid of mirrors. However, they became one of the most recurring symbols in his books. Two people caused a profound impact on his personal and literary life: his mother Leonor Acevedo and his wife María Kodama.

The subjects he was most interested in were the mythology, the mathematics, the theology, and the philosophy. He was also a chess enthusiast. Most of his writings are short pieces; poems, essays, and tales characterized by their clarity and depth.

Some of his most outstanding pieces are “El jardín de los senderos que se bifurcan”, “Luna de enfrente”, “El Aleph”, “El informe de Brodie” and “El tamaño de mi esperanza”. They have been translated into more than twenty languages! His unique style has influenced other authors like Umberto Eco, Roberto Bolaño, and Marguerite Yourcenar.

Borges and several of his writer friends created a fictional writer called Honorio Bustos Domecq. Working together, they all wrote and published a collection of detective tales signed by this unreal author.

Jorge Luis Borges died in Geneva, Switzerland, on June 14, 1986. Nowadays, he is acknowledged as one of the most prominent writers of the Spanish language and universal literature.
