Family owned with female dentist and oral health therapist / oral myologist
NEW DENTAL SERVICE GOES BEYOND YOUR TEETH Going to the dentist isn’t just about brushing your teeth and cavity protection! Family owned Gold Coast Dental and Denture Centre is excited to launch the only dedicated area and special program for children with nonnutritive habits. The centre will be the only certified practice on the Gold Coast to offer the ‘Thumb Sucking Program’. Owners James and Imola Foster pride themselves on creating a child friendly environment and along with Dr Philippa McCarron their aim is to help children grow healthy teeth and jaws into adulthood. “Our team and practice has grown from a denture clinic to a family practice with a passion for early intervention, developmental assessment and detecting
growth in children’s oral health,” said Imola Foster. “We are parents of young children ourselves and the passion has come from lack of services for early years’ intervention.” Additional services offered include: • Tongue Tie assessment and release with laser. • Oral Myology – developing good oral habits around correct breathing, swallowing and oral habits. • Pre-orthodontic treatment with the Myobrace system. Imola and Dr McCarrons’ goal as mothers and providers is to help young children and families achieve the best growth of their child’s jaws.

I
can’t believe another school year is upon us already! As I prepare my own tribe for the return to school, my heart instinctively goes out to all the little ones that will be the ‘new kid’ this year – whether that’s starting childcare, stepping into Prep, joining a new school, or making the leap into Year 7. We’ve all been the new kid at some point, and no matter how old you are, it’s still a scary time. Even as adults – starting a new job or relocating to a new area – the ‘new kid’ stomach-churny feeling can quickly come flooding back. We’ve shifted schools recently, and as much as I encouraged my own kids to get involved and make new friends, when it came to doing it myself I really stumbled. Those first few afternoons at the school gates not knowing who to talk to. The first birthday party we were invited to and I’m found shuffling nervously under a tree whilst the kids happily slot into their new friendship groups. Needless to say, the littlies negotiated out of ‘new kid’ territory waaaaay faster than me! So, on the return to school, let’s remind our kids to include the new kid looking
lost at break-time. And on the school run, let’s look out for the new parent standing nervously at the gates. Reach out, smile and say ‘hi’. That small hand of friendship could make the world of difference to their school year, and you never know – you might just make a new friend. To get you ready for a new school year, this issue we are all about ‘Back to School’! One school shares their wisdom on transitioning from Year 6 to Year 7. And this year the school ranking system changes from OP to ATAR, so we find out what that means for our older kids. But the summer holiday isn’t quite over yet! So, we also have a huge guide to the best family-friendly day trips across the region. How many can you tick off before you the summer is over? And as always, with the region’s best kid-friendly events, news, reviews, products and more, it’s another bumper sunshine-filled issue just for you. Happy New Year!

A GOOD SWIM TEACHER CAN MAKE THE WORLD OF DIFFERENCE
When it comes to learning to swim, a good swim school and more importantly, a good swim teacher can make the world of difference to your child’s development. Terri-Anne Ransfield, Centre Manager from Kingswim believes it’s the little things that make learning the essential life skill of swimming an enjoyable and meaningful experience for parents and kids alike. “Whether it’s noticing the ‘first time flusters’ and providing some gentle assurance, helping Mum carry a few things or knowing when a particular child needs a little extra attention, these things make what can be a stressful experience enjoyable for everyone,” says Terri-Anne.

MOST INNOVATIVE SCHOOL AWARD FOR ST RITA’S
ow nude is your food? Miami State School is leading the way with their Nude Food initiative. Nude Food is all about trying to reduce the overall amount of waste the school produces and creating rubbish free lunchboxes by eliminating things such as plastic wrap, aluminium foil and sandwich bags. The school encourages students to bring food in containers, lunchboxes with separate compartments or anything with a natural wrapping such as banana’s and oranges. The Nude Food Coordinator at Miami says the children and parents are all getting on board and are extremely supportive of the nude food movement. The goal is to have 100 per cent nude food at the school. To further encourage the students, there is a weekly competition within the school to promote nude food and the class who has the most amount of nude food in their lunchboxes with the least amount of rubbish wins the nude food trophy.

the KINDY TEACHER
hat does it take to be a great Kindy teacher? We chat to Claudia Smith, Early Childhood Teacher at the new Sanctuary Early Learning Adventure in Mermaid Waters to find out… WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND? I am originally from the UK, where I lived in the beautiful town of Nantwich in Cheshire. I relocated to the Gold Coast with my family 18 months ago and am loving this new way of life! My teaching career began 19 years ago when I started teaching adults ‘English as a second language’ in Poland as a way of funding my travels. Upon returning to the K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U
UK I continued as a lecturer at the local college and realised that whilst I loved teaching, what I’d really like to do is work with young children. Since qualifying in 2004, I haven’t looked back. I have specialised in teaching the Early Years throughout my career and the motivation to work in this area stems from my desire to give children a wholly positive start in their learning journey. WHAT DO YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR ROLE AS A KINDY TEACHER? I love so many things about this job but I love it most when I can see the impact that
the work we do is having. I love to see faces light up, happy smiles and contented cheerful children. WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO WHEN YOU AREN’T IN THE CL ASSROOM? I moved to Australia with my husband and children to be reunited with family who were already out here, so when I’m not in the classroom I’m exploring the Gold Coast with them. I love to walk along the beautiful beaches, I’m constantly in awe of the scenery and the nature. Everything is very different to our lives in the UK and being able to see things such as dolphins swimming past our back garden is simply amazing! J A N U A R Y / F E B R U A R Y 2019

PROFILE
IF YOU WEREN’T A KINDY TEACHER, WHAT WOULD YOU BE? I would still want to work in a career that involves helping and caring for people. Something I’ve always been very interested in, is working with children or adults with additional needs and finding ways to improve their life experiences. WHAT IS YOUR SUPERPOWER? Administering minor first aid with a ‘wet paper towel’ and a hug. WHAT IS YOUR NEVER-FAIL TECHNIQUE FOR SETTLING DOWN A WHOLE KINDY CLASS? Using music and action songs, I have a repertoire of songs I have built up over the years and will happily sing at any given time! WHAT PROGRAM DO YOU PL AN ON DELIVERING AT SANCTUARY? I plan to deliver a quality Kindergarten program that draws upon my wealth of experience, my daily observations and assessments of the children and my
partnerships with parents. In this way I can be confident that I am equipping the children I teach with what they need, whilst nurturing their individual learning preferences and making sure that they enjoy learning and want to come in every day. I use a variety of approaches, aiming to address the varying learning styles of all children whilst achieving the best possible results. I want to help the children I work with settle quickly and love being there, this means that singing songs, dancing, sharing stories and creating art will feature strongly in the daily program. WHY DO YOU FEEL THAT THIS APPROACH TO LEARNING IS IMPORTANT FOR KINDY KIDS? This style of learning is important because, essentially, it’s enjoyable, fun and relevant to each child. It is always my goal to make children feel confident to come in to Kindy, and transfer this confidence into independent learning. This provides those vital foundations ready to build on when they enter the next stage. I value the importance of developing children’s ideas through carefully planned

activities that foster their natural curiosity and challenge their understanding by taking it on to the next level. I aim for the children to feel secure, valued and see Kindy as a place they come to learn and have fun. The success of this first stage is crucial to further achievement throughout their future school career. It is vital therefore that this experience is the best I could possibly offer, which is what I always strive for. WHAT EXCITES YOU MOST ABOUT JOINING THE SANCTUARY TEAM AND THE NEW CENTRE? Having the opportunity to work with an amazing hand-picked team and being part of a culture that shares my philosophies is a very exciting next step for me. The centre itself is a fantastic new design, purpose built to achieve the best outcomes for children, maximising natural light, inspiring resources and exceptional outdoor play spaces all of which allow children to explore and learn.

EASING THE TRANSITION FROM YEAR 6 TO YEAR 7
oving from primary school to secondary school is both exciting and daunting for many children. Parents can help their children meet this educational milestone. Most students thrive on the new environment and the varied experiences that secondary school offers. However, some students find the move from the familiar to the less familiar to be challenging. The transition from primary school to secondary school happens alongside the transition from childhood to adolescence and includes many changes, both physically and emotionally. The transition may result in some uncertainty and even a sense of loss where students may have had leadership roles as the most senior students in the primary school and now find themselves as the most

junior members of the secondary school. For many students, starting secondary school can mean developing new ways of learning. Students are expected to be: • Responsible for their learning • Managers of their own time • Independent learners • Self motivated Here are some common questions that students have about transitioning, along with positive tips for how you can assist your child:
HOW CAN I FIND MY WAY AROUND IN A BIGGER CAMPUS? • Ask what assistance the school provides to help transition your child into secondary school – for example transition day, orientation day or buddy program. • Help your child review any orientation
material provided by the school – this may include simple but important information such as the location of the toilets.
HOW CAN I BE MORE ORGANISED AND PLAN AHEAD? • Make sure you know the school’s key dates – usually these are made available online or in a regular newsletter. (Make sure the school has your up-to-date contact details.) • Make sure your child is organised before the first day in their new school – uniform, school bag, books, etc. should be ready at least the day before to alleviate any rush or panic on the morning of the first day. • Encourage your child to wear their new school shoes around the house to make sure they are comfortable. Sore feet on the first day will detract from the positives. • Learn about school routines – school start K I D S O N T H E C O A S T.C O M . A U • K I D S I N T H E C I T Y.C O M . A U

and finish times, recess and lunchtime. • Have an emergency safety plan. Be clear about who your child should contact and what you expect them to do in an emergency.
HOW CAN I GET TO SCHOOL AND CLASS IN PLENTY OF TIME? • Learn about travel to school. Make a plan around the public transport timetable. Have a backup plan in case they miss public transport. If you plan to drive your child to school, do a trial drop off and pick up, and check for parking. Allow extra time on the first day. • Talk to your child about their timetable, including subjects and classrooms. Make a few copies of the timetable to keep in different places. Encourage your child to think ahead.
HOW CAN I COPE WITH AN INCREASED WORKLOAD? • Make sure your child gets enough sleep. • Create a consistent homework routine. • Create a comfortable place for your child to study. This should be a quiet place away from distractions.

Most students thrive on the new environment and the varied experiences that secondary school offers. As parents, the best thing we can do for our child is to be positive and enthusiastic. If your child feels nervous about starting secondary school, remind them this is completely normal. These nerves may last past the first day. Encourage your child to talk about what they might be worried about. Our pastoral programs at St Hilda’s School are designed to help our girls face transition times comfortably. We help the girls to be confident and give them skills to be capable. We also know that if girls are encouraged to connect with one another and have opportunities to contribute, they will find greater success. Tracey Maynard, Head of Junior School, St Hilda’s School
HOW WILL I MAKE NEW FRIENDS?
• Encourage your child to be friendly and discuss what it means to be a good friend. • Prior to school commencing, organise a get together with other students going into Year 7. • Support your child by encouraging them to get involved in extra-curricular activities, leadership roles, house activities and community service. •Talk to your child about peer group pressure. • Encourage your child to keep in touch with their primary school friends. It helps to be able to share and talk through experiences.
STUDENT TIPS
“Never give up. Try your hardest. Give everything a go. Be organised.” “Put yourself out there and don’t be afraid to speak up.” “Stay on top of your work, don’t leave it to the last minute.” “Be organised. Have a diary. Be positive!”

MAKING THE SWITCH FROM OP TO ATAR A new pathway to tertiary study for Queensland’s senior students is coming. Is your school ready?
F
rom 2019, a student who starts Year 11 in Queensland will graduate Year 12 with an Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank ATAR, replacing the Overall Position (OP). The system will bring Queensland into line with other states and territories around Australia who already use ATAR, but it’s a new era for the next generation of senior students (and their parents) in Queensland.
WHAT IS AN ATAR? An ATAR is a number ranging between 99.95 (highest) to zero (lowest) which reports a student’s rank position relative to all other Year 12 students. Designed to compare students who have studied different senior subjects, it is based on a student’s overall academic performance, and allows students outcomes to be better understood and more easily comparable. To be eligible for an ATAR, students need to complete five general subjects, or four general subjects plus either one applied subject or VET course at AQF Certificate III or above. In Queensland, successful completion of an English subject will also be compulsory, but students’ English marks may not necessarily be used to calculate their ATAR. Where the old system used to rely on teachers to compare and moderate assessments, it now combines school-based assessment with external exams. External assessment is developed and marked by the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA).
THE TRANSITION IN PRACTICE
To make the move as smooth as possible for their schools, Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) appointed Wayne Chapman as Senior Project Officer – Senior Schooling to plan and implement a transition program that ensured BCE teachers were at the cutting edge of innovation and deeply prepared for this major transition, Wayne said preparation processes across the BCE system had been strategic and thorough. orn and raised on the Gold Coast, Ben Hannant has a long list of accomplishments. A former Rugby League player, a State of Origin and Australian international representative and now the host of Gold Coast 90.9 Sea FM breakfast show, but Ben’s greatest accomplishment is being a husband to his amazing wife Emma and father to their seven beautiful children. We sat down with Ben to find out more about his family, life and traditions. YOU’RE ONE OF 11 CHILDREN, D I D Y O U A LWAY S WA N T A B I G FA M I LY F O R YO U R S E L F T O O? I had six brothers and four sisters and although we didn’t have a lot of money growing up, we had a lot of love in the house, sibling fights and joking around but a lot of love and laughter. When I was in my teens I was lucky enough to meet the right girl so we got married and decided to have a baby, and that turned into two, then three and now we’re sitting at seven kids and I love it! I feel like my life is full of wealth because of the joy my kids bring and I couldn’t imagine my life without them, it’s the best thing ever.
HOW WOULD YOUR WIFE AND KIDS DESCRIBE YOU? As someone who is always trying to improve and reach his potential. They will tell you I don’t like taking short cuts and I don’t want them taking short cuts. They’ll tell you I’m always trying to make myself and them better, to grow and to make ourselves the best we can be. WHAT IS YOUR GOAL AS A DAD? To make my kids the best citizens and the best role models who contribute to society. My Dad’s job was to make me better than him and my job is to make my kids better than me. My kids will be great husbands and wives and great fathers and mothers. The more time I put into my family, the more growth and happiness that will come. The more growth you have, the longer it takes, the harder it is and the more you’ll appreciate it. You never have growth in your comfort zone and you’ll never be comfortable in your growth zone.

Apart from buying uniforms and school books, I sit down with every one of my kids, every year just before school starts, I take them out one by one, with my daughters I take them out on a daddy and daughter date and with my sons I have some father and son time. My wife does the same with mother and son dates and our daughters on mother and daughter days. I sit with all of them one by one and find out where they’re at, whether they’re struggling with anything or need to talk about anything and we are religious so I give them a father’s blessing which is pretty cool and it gives them confidence for the school year. It’s really about communication with each of them to see where they may need help and giving them the tools to be able to handle what will be happening throughout the year. You can listen to all the stories, adventures and antics Ben and his family get up to every morning on 90.9 Sea FM’s breakfast show with Heather, Dan and Ben from 5am to 9am!

HELP-A
IS AT HAND From the moment you receive a special needs diagnosis for a child or a loved one, your life is altered forever. We chat to Stuart Kruger, founder of HELPA, to find out his story. TELL US ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE OF PARENTING A CHILD WITH AUTISM? My seven-year-old son has severe autism, and my experiences range from the good, the not-so-good, and the ‘oh… ok then’ bits! Following the initial diagnosis, I remember having so many thoughts running through my head: “I can’t be alone! But how can I find who else is going through something similar?” “If only I could just ask someone who understands what my child is going through. Anyone, anywhere!” “I can’t even remember what happened yesterday, let alone last week!” “Where did I put that form/ letter/ evidence? I just can’t keep on top of it all.” Something that became very clear, very quickly, was the benefits of having a wider social care system which recognises, acknowledges and supports the requirements that we (as parents and carers) have too. With 8,760 hours in each year, even if you receive excellent therapy and support during the week, you can’t take those specialists home with you. We found ourselves imagining being able to speak to a therapist in real time about a situation which was unfolding right at that moment. No need to wait for the next appointment, no need to drive anywhere – just a chance to deal with that one challenge, right now.
SO, YOU DESIGNED AN APP TO HELP! Yes! All our thoughts and experiences were the catalyst for designing HELPA. It’s a digital health app, co-designed by special needs parents and providers, for special needs parents and providers.

IF ONLY I COULD JUST ASK SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS WHAT MY CHILD IS GOING THROUGH. ANYONE, ANYWHERE?!
Our goal is to make it easier for families to share their experiences with others, no matter where they are in the world. There are some other great features, like being able to store documents digitally, and being able to capture the moments that matter by using image, video, and evidencebased inputs. You can use those tools to share information with participating therapists and clinicians, in real-time.
AND YOU HAVE THE SUPPORT OF LEADING FOUNDATIONS AND SERVICE PROVIDERS? Yes, we are very excited and proud to be working with AEIOU as an Australian partner,
HELPA is a digital app designed by special needs parents and providers. bringing more support to more families around the country. ANIMALPHABET
THE AFTERWARDS
By Jeff Kinney
By Julia Donaldson, illustrated by Sharon King Chai
When snow shuts down Greg Heffley’s middle school, his neighbourhood transforms into a wintry battlefield. Rival groups fight over territory, build massive snow forts, and stage epic snowball fights. And in the crosshairs are Greg and his trusty best friend, Rowley Jefferson. It’s a fight for survival as Greg and Rowley navigate alliances, betrayals, and warring gangs in a neighbourhood meltdown. When the snow clears, will they emerge as heroes? Or will they even survive to see another day?
New from acclaimed author Julia Donaldson comes a delightfully rich and interactive and picture book to take you on an adventure through the animal kingdom. Written as an interactive guessing game, with eye-catching artwork and an exotic array of animals to marvel over, can you guess who has more legs than a butterfly? And who is wrinklier than a hedgehog? With peep holes to explore, flaps to lift and rhyming text and bold colours, Animalphabet is a gorgeous book to treasure.
