È con grande piacere che saluto gli organizzatori ed i partecipanti al Campionato Mondiale Maschile di Curling di Cortina d’Ampezzo. Gli italiani si sono appassionati a questo sport in occasione delle Olimpiadi invernali di Torino e sono certo che il mondiale di Cortina d’Ampezzo sarà l’occasione per diffondere ulteriormente nel nostro Paese questa disciplina che richiede alta concentrazione, tenacia, spirito di squadra ed una perfetta condizione atletica. Mi congratulo vivamente con gli organizzatori per essere riusciti a portare per la prima volta il mondiale di curling in Italia e rinnovo a tutti i miei più sentiti auguri per il migliore successo dell’evento.

It is with the greatest of pleasure that I address the organisers and participants of the Men’s World Curling Championship of Cortina d’Ampezzo. Italians are extremely fond of this sport, as witness the Winter Olympics of Turin, and I am certain that the world championship of Cortina d’Ampezzo will be a further opportunity for the promotion in our country of this discipline that requires great concentration, tenacity, team spirit and a perfect athletic condition. I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the organisers for having brought the World Curling Championship to Italy for the first time, and I once again wish you every success for the event.

Il Curling: antico gioco sul ghiaccio, specialità olimpica già in epoche lontane e riammessa nelle edizioni dei tempi moderni, sarà protagonista a Cortina di un’appassionata competizione di livello internazionale. Cortina D’Ampezzo, infatti, ospiterà il Campionato Mondiale di Curling, servendosi di strutture di prim’ordine, quale lo stadio olimpico del ghiaccio, di un’impeccabile organizzazione e di quella capacità ricettiva, rinomata in tutto il mondo per ospitalità ed efficienza alberghiera. L’evento, che vede in gara le squadre di dodici nazioni, affascina particolarmente non solo gli abitanti del bellunese, che con questo sport hanno familiarità da oltre un secolo, ma anche i sempre più numerosi appassionati di questa storica disciplina. Sarà indubbiamente una grande festa, un avvincente spettacolo e una sana competizione, in cui peraltro ci auguriamo di conseguire i più alti risultati, visto il profondo impegno sempre dimostrato dai nostri atleti e dalle relative associazioni sportive. Agli organizzatori rivolgo un particolare ringraziamento per la dedizione con cui hanno curato la realizzazione di questo campionato internazionale e li esorto a proseguire nella strada intrapresa, affinché il Veneto possa continuare, gara dopo gara, ad affermarsi sportivamente nel mondo grazie sia ai successi dei suoi campioni che all’affidabilità delle infrastrutture e delle sue sedi tutte. Infine, agli atleti di ogni nazione in gara auguro di vivere questa esperienza con tenacia e determinazione per raggiungere così il miglior risultato sperato, perché i sogni diventano reali solo se ci si crede davvero. Curling: an ancient game on ice, already an Olympic discipline in ancient times and reinstated in modern Olympic Games, and soon to be the protagonist at Cortina of an exciting competition on an international level. Cortina D’Ampezzo, in fact, is to host the World Curling Championship, boasting first-rate structures such as the Olympic Ice Stadium, an impeccable organisation and a welcoming capacity which makes Cortina renowned throughout the world for her accommodating hospitality and efficiency. The event, which will involve competition between the teams of twelve nations, will be particularly attractive not only for the inhabitants of the Belluno area, who have been familiar with the sport for over a century, but also for the increasingly numerous enthusiasts of this historic discipline. It will undoubtedly be a great festive occasion, an exciting spectacle and a healthy competition, in which we hope to achieve the highest of results, seeing the great effort that our athletes and their relevant sports associations have always made. I thank the organisers in particular for the dedication with which they have brought about this international championship and I exhort them to continue along the road that they have taken, so that the Veneto Region will be able to continue, with each competition, to affirm its sports status in the world thanks both to the success of its champions and to the reliability of the infrastructures of all of its sites. Finally, I hope that all the athletes of every nation in the competition will bring to this experience the tenacity and determination needed to attain the best possible results, since our dreams only come true if we really believe in them. Buongiorno a tutti, in qualità di Sindaco del Comune di Cortina d’Ampezzo sono onorato di poter dare il benvenuto a nome mio e dell’intera Amministrazione Comunale a tutti gli appassionati di curling. Siamo orgogliosi di aver realizzato il sogno di ospitare i Mondiali del 2010, perché il curling nel nostro paese ha radici lontane, in quanto venne importato in Italia dalla vicina Svizzera nel lontano 1908 da alcuni nostri illuminati albergatori. Si tratta quindi di una disciplina ricca di storia, fascino e tradizione e siamo tutti impazienti di vedere gli atleti competere ai massimi livelli nello storico Stadio Olimpico, sulla scia della positiva esperienza dei Mondiali mixed doubles del 2009. Come Amministrazione crediamo fortemente nella capacità promozionale di questo sport oltre che nel valore in se dell’evento sportivo e pertanto l’abbiamo sostenuto in maniera attiva e concreta, convinti che riusciremo anche in questa occasione a far vedere al mondo intero cos’è capace di fare la “Regina delle Dolomiti”. Prima di salutare permettetemi di dire un grande grazie al Comitato Organizzatore, ed in particolar modo al suo Presidente Massimo Antonelli e all’amico di Cortina d’Ampezzo Franco Zumofen, per l’impegno e la professionalità dimostrate nella preparazione dell’evento; non dobbiamo naturalmente dimenticare tutti i volontari, gli albergatori, i ristoratori, gli esercenti dei bar, i negozianti e tutte le categorie economiche e sociali del paese che direttamente o indirettamente collaboreranno alla buona riuscita della manifestazione. Dear all, in my capacity as Mayor of Cortina d’Ampezzo, it is my honour to extend a welcome, in my name and on behalf of the entire Administration of the Town Council , to all curling enthusiasts. We are proud to have achieved the dream of hosting the World Championship of 2010, since curling in our country has faraway roots, having been imported to Italy from neighbouring Switzerland as long ago as 1908 by some of our enlightened hoteliers. Hence this is a discipline rich in history, fascination and tradition, and we are excited to see the athletes compete at the highest levels in the history of the Olympic Stadium, in the wake of the positive experience of the World Mixed Doubles of 2009. We of the Administration strongly believe in the promotional capability of this sport as well as in the intrinsic value of the sports event itself, and so we have supported it actively and concretely, convinced that on this occasion too we will succeed in showing the whole world what the “Queen of the Dolomites” is capable of. È nostro dovere ricordare il lavoro svolto in questa località perché il curling, assieme agli altri sport del ghiaccio, potesse conquistare presenze e prospettive importanti, soprattutto alla luce del successo di popolarità avvenuto ai Giochi Olimpici Invernali di Torino 2006. Con il fondamentale e generoso prodigarsi di dirigenti sportivi centrali e locali si è ripreso un cammino che vede la pratica del curling in crescita. Saluto perciò ben volentieri questa manifestazione che porta allo Stadio Olimpico il meglio del curling internazionale. È una grande occasione per consolidare attenzioni e interessi attorno ad uno sport affascinante. For the Italian sport of curling the World Men’s Championship 2010 is an important international event. We must remember the work accomplished here so that curling, along with other ice sports, may prosper and invite important future events. Cari amici, è con grande piacere che Vi do il benvenuto a Cortina d’Ampezzo a nome del Comitato Organizzatore che ho l’onore di presiedere. Organizzare un evento di tali proporzioni non è certamente cosa facile, ma la passione mia personale e di tutti i collaboratori per questo meraviglioso sport ha reso possibile superare ogni ostacolo. Cortina e Curling sono un binomio che ha origini antiche: abbiamo superato i cento anni di storia di questo sport nella nostra valle e quindi anche in Italia. A Cortina si sono svolti nel lontano 1955 i primi Campionati Italiani Assoluti e sempre Cortina, nel corso dei decenni, ha “sfornato” decine e decine di atleti che hanno avuto l’onore di rappresentare l’Italia nelle massime competizioni mondiali. Non si può infine dimenticare la tradizione del Torneo Estivo Città di Cortina, che da oltre quarant’anni alla fine di giungo ha visto e vede tuttora la partecipazione di squadre provenienti da tutto il mondo, formate da atleti che hanno raggiunto nella loro carriera i massimi livelli agonistici in campo internazionale. Ma per tutti noi il Curling non significa solamente agonismo e sportività ma anche e soprattutto amicizia e ospitalità; questo infatti è lo spirito che ci anima essendo il vero spirito del Curling; siate quindi i benvenuti nella nostra casa e nella nostra famiglia! Rinnovo a nome mio e di tutto il Comitato Organizzatore il più caloroso benvenuto ed ovviamente… buon gioco! Dear friends, it is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Cortina d’Ampezzo on behalf of the organising committee of which I have the honour of being president. Organising an event of such proportion is certainly no easy feat, although my own passion and that of all the other collaborators for this marvellous sport has ensured that every obstacle has been overcome. Cortina and Curling are a twosome with historical origins: we have a history of this sport in our valley, and hence also in Italy, that goes back over a hundred years. At Cortina, as long ago as 1955 the first Italian Championships were staged, and over the years Cortina has “turned out” dozens and dozens of athletes who have had the honour of representing Italy in the top world competitions. Finally, we must not forget the traditional City of Cortina Summer Tournament, which for over forty years at the end of June has seen – and still sees - the participation of teams coming from all over the world, formed of athletes who have reached the highest competitive levels of their career on an international scale. But for all of us Curling means not only competitiveness and sportsmanship but also and above all friendship and hospitality; in fact, this is the spirit that inspires us, the true spirit of Curling, and so I welcome you all to our home and family! a sempre terra di confine, Cortina racchiude in sé tutti i sapori del Veneto e del Tirolo. Entrambe le tradizioni sono tutt’oggi presenti all’interno della cucina ampezzana. Tutte le specialità tipiche e molte altre ancora possono essere gustate nei moltissimi ristoranti e all’interno dei caratteristici rifugi che alla gastronomia locale uniscono l’amore per la montagna e panorami mozzafiato. Il piatto ampezzano più noto e tipico è quello dei casunziei, ravioli a forma di mezza luna che possono essere rossi se ripieni di rape o verdi se impastati con spinaci o erbe mangerecce che crescono spontaneamente sui prati in primavera. Dal Tirolo arrivano i canederli, polpette di pane tagliato a dadini e ripieno di speck e spinaci, da servire in brodo e con burro fuso. Anche gli spaetzel, gli gnocchetti verdi conditi con panna e speck tipici della tradizione d’oltralpe, sono entrati a pieno titolo nella gastronomia locale. Dalla cucina veneta provengono i piatti a base di polenta. Per i più golosi non mancano strudel di mele, torte sacher, gelati con lamponi caldi e crostate con frutti di bosco.

Natura e Cultura

ortina come luogo di tradizioni, arte e cultura: mostre e salotti letterari di altissimo livello, incontri con personalità della politica, del giornalismo e dello spettacolo, manifestazioni culturali e musicali sono all’ordine del giorno nella Regina delle Dolomiti. Il Museo d’Arte Moderna ‘Mario Rimoldi’. Una collezione di circa 400 opere. In molti anni di collezionismo, Mario Rimoldi ha raccolto dipinti e sculture dei maggiori esponenti del Novecento italiano: De Pisis, Sironi, De Chirico, Carrà, Guttuso e Morandi sono solo alcuni degli artisti presenti nella collezione. Il Museo Paleontologico ‘Rinaldo Zardini’. Una delle più consistenti collezioni di fossili oggi esistenti: gusci di invertebrati marini, coralli, spugne, fossili d’innumerevoli animali. I reperti, provenienti tutti dall’area dolomitica, furono raccolti e catalogati dal ricercatore ampezzano Rinaldo Zardini e testimoniano l’evoluzione geologica delle valle ampezzana. Un’esperienza culturale en plein air: il Museo della Grande Guerra, costituito dai quattro Musei all’aperto del Lagazuoi, delle 5 Torri, del Sasso di Stria e dal Museo del Forte Tre Sassi. Si estende in un raggio di 5 Km e permette di conoscere i diversi aspetti della Grande Guerra in montagna. Grazie a una collaborazione italoaustriaca e al lavoro di numerosi volontari, le gallerie e le trincee sono state ripulite e ripristinate.

he period between April and the start of November, when in the Ampezzo Valley the white of the snow gives way to the full, bright and expressive colours of the warmer seasons- this is the best time to discover the marvels that the territory has kept guarded under the white mantle of winter. Enjoy the natural green spaces of summer and then the thousand colours in which the Dolomites are clothed in Autumn. And so Cortina is transformed into an immense gym with infinite proposals and numerous itineraries on foot or by bicycle.

Cortina Lifestyle Good local cuisine

raditionally a borderland area, Cortina embodies all the flavours of the Veneto and Tyrol areas. The traditions of both areas are still features of the Ampezzo cuisine. All the typical specialities and much more can be sampled at the multitude of restaurants and inside the characteristic refuges that combine the local gastronomy with love for the mountains and breathtaking scenery. The best known and most typical Ampezzo dish is casunziei, ravioli in the shape of a half moon that are red if made with beetroot or green if made with spinach or edible herbs that grow spontaneously in the meadows in spring. From the Tyrol we have canederli, balls formed of bread cut into cubes and filled with speck and spinach, to be served in broth or with melted butter. Also absorbed into the local cuisine are spaetzel, the green gnocchi topped with cream and speck that are typical of the tradition on the other side of the Alps. The Veneto cuisine has given us polenta dishes. If you have a sweet tooth you’ll enjoy the apple strudel, Sachertorte, ice cream with hot raspberries and fruits of the forest tarts.

Après ski and movida

o the vast opportunities to taste the local cuisine can be added the initiatives of the après-ski and night life venues. During his many years as a collector of works of art, Mario Rimoldi has collected paintings and sculptures by the main Italian artists of the twentieth century: De Pisis, Sironi, De Chirico, Carrà, Guttuso and Morandi are just some of the artists whose works are shown in the collection. The ‘Rinaldo Zardini’ Palaeontological Museum. One of the most extensive collections of fossils existing today: shells of marine invertebrates, corals, sponges and fossils of innumerable animals. The remains, all coming from the Dolomite area, were collected and catalogued by the researcher from the Ampezzo Valley Rinaldo Zardini and bear witness to the geological evolution of the Ampezzo Valley. The Museum of the Great War, an open-air cultural experience: consisting of the four open-air Museums of the Lagazuoi, the 5 Torri, the Sasso di Stria and the Museum of the Tre Sassi Fort. The museum extends over a radius of 5 Km, revealing to visitors the various aspects of the Great War as fought in the mountains. Thanks to a collaboration between Italy and Austria and to the work of numerous volunteers, the tunnels and trenches have been cleaned out and restored.

CURLING HISTORY Curling Cortina

“T

utti pazzi per la stone”. E ancora “Fenomeno curling”, titolavano alcuni quotidiani italiani a ridosso delle Olimpiadi di Torino 2006. Uno sport nuovo, diverso, fuori dal comune che – a dispetto dei suoi oltre cinque secoli d’età - è uscito prepotentemente alla ribalta con gli ultimi Giochi Olimpici. Merito anche della presenza di una nazionale composta per gran parte da atleti provenienti da Cortina d’Ampezzo, che - guarda caso – è stata la prima località a “importarlo” in Italia. Il curling e Cortina, un legame strettissimo, quasi viscerale: una storia del passato, una realtà viva del presente e un concreto progetto per il futuro... Ad aprile 2010 in Italia si tornerà a parlare di Curling, con i Capital One® World Men’s Curling Championship. Una conferma in più sul ruolo di eccellenza che Cortina ha sempre rivestito nel panorama del curling italiano. Basti dire che a portarlo in Italia, negli anni ’20 fu proprio un cortinese, Leo Menardi, figlio di Giuseppe ed Emilia che nel 1906 avevano dato vita al Palace Hotel Cristallo.

I primi club italiani portano non a caso il nome dei due storici hotel della conca ampezzana: il C.C. Cristallo e il C.C. Miramonti a cui si susseguirono rapidamente il C.C. Cortina, il C.C. 66 e il C.C. Dolomiti, il C.C. Doria e il C.C. Tofane, molti dei quali sono ancora oggi in attività e vivaio di atleti di grande livello.

Gli inizi

Sulle date un alone di mistero

li indizi si perdono nella notte dei tempi. L’unica certezza è che già nel XVI secolo il curling si praticava in Scozia. Lo documenta l’incisione della Stirling Stone datata 1511 che contiene la prima citazione scritta di questo sport. Un gioco che in realtà doveva essere diffuso nel nord Europa come testimoniano due dipinti di Pieter Bruegel il Vecchio che immortalano alcuni contadini olandesi intenti a giocare sul ghiaccio con delle pietre. Qualunque sia la terra d’origine, il curling all’aperto divenne molto popolare in Scozia tra il XVI secolo ed il XIX secolo cioè fino quando il clima invernale rimase abbastanza freddo da permettere il formarsi, sugli specchi d’acqua, di uno strato di ghiaccio sufficientemente spesso. Non è un caso che proprio la città di Perth in Scozia ospiti la World Curling Federation, il massimo organo internazionale della disciplina. Attualmente il paese con il maggior numero di praticanti è il Canada, con oltre 1.300.000 tesserati.

Curling Cortina

“T

utti pazzi per la stone” (“Everybody’s crazy about the stone”) and “Fenomeno curling” were the titles in the Italian language that appeared in several Italian dailies in the lee of the Turin Olympics of 2006. A new and different sport, out of the ordinary, which – despite its being over five centuries old - came into the spotlights with a vengeance at the last Games with the successes of a national team consisting largely of athletes coming from Cortina d’Ampezzo, which also happened to be the first locality to “import” the sport to Italy. Curling and Cortina - a really close tie, the history of the past, a real live situation of the present and a concrete project for the future... In 2010 in Italy there will again be talk of curling, with the arrival of the Capital One® World Men’s Curling Championship – another confirmation of the role of excellence that Cortina has always played in the arena of international curling. Suffice it to say that Leo Menardi, the man who brought it to Italy in the 1920s, was from Cortina; he was the son of Giuseppe and Emilia, who in 1906 had opened the Palace Hotel Cristallo.

nitially it was played on the frozen lakes and at the main hotels, as a sort of entertainment for the guests. Some photos from the 1950s show the very lovely Brigitte Bardot, as always ahead of the times and in the forefront of fashion, getting to grips with the “stones” on the frozen rink of the Grand Hotel Miramonti. It was not by chance that the first Italian clubs bore the names of the two historic hotels of the Ampezzo Valley: C.C. Cristallo and C.C. Miramonti, closely followed by C.C. Cortina, C.C. 66, C.C. Dolomiti, C.C. Doria and C.C. Tofane, many of which are still active today, and still turning out high-level athletes. In 1955 Cortina hosted the first Italian championship, the most interesting curling event in Italy, which has been repeated every year since then. In 1973 Renato Ghezze, Paolo Da Ros, Lino Mayer Mariani and Andrea Pavani represented Italy at the World Championships in Regina, in Canada. Since that occasion no competition has ever taken place without the presence of a team from Cortina.

The beginnings

An aura of mystery surrounds the dates

ts beginnings are lost in the mists of time. The only certainty is that curling was practised in Scotland as early as the XVI century. This is documented by the incision of the Stirling Stone, dating back to 1511, which contains the first written citation about this sport – a game that in reality was probably widespread throughout the north of Europe, as witness two paintings by Pieter Brueghel, the Elder, immortalising some Dutch peasants intent on playing with stones on the ice. Whatever its country of origin, open-air curling became very popular in Scotland between the XVI and the XIX centuries, for as long as the winter climate stayed cold enough to allow for the formation on the water of a thick enough layer of ice. It is not by chance that the city of Perth in Scotland hosts the World Curling Federation, curling’s most important international body. At present the country with the highest number of players of the sport is Canada, with over 1.300.000 members.

La partita si gioca da un’estremità all’altra: ogni giocatore lancia due stones (sassi di un particolare granito proveniente da una piccola isola scozzese di circa 19 Kg l’uno e dotati di manico) alternandosi con proprio avversario e cercando di avvicinarsi il più possibile al centro di un bersaglio disegnato sul ghiaccio. Lo skip è colui che lancia i due ultimi sassi ed elabora la strategia del gioco. Dopo il lancio, due giocatori si muovono sul campo precedendo di poco la stone e, utilizzando scope di crine oppure di panno, ne assecondano la traiettoria.

opo che i 16 stones sono stati lanciati e dopo aver conteggiato i punti (numero di stones vicino al centro rispetto a quelle dell’avversario) si ricomincia a giocare. Nelle competizioni ufficiali si disputano 10 mani/end, ma sono numerosi i tornei in cui il numero di end è 8, per una durata di circa 2 ore e mezza. È uno sport di abilità, che obbliga a pensare, a studiare le mosse dell’avversario utilizzando la tattica migliore, motivo per cui elemento fondamentale è la concentrazione.

GUARDIA (guard) la guardia permette di coprire un

punto, difendendolo. In questa immagine (fig. 2) la stone gialla fuori dalla casa va a proteggere la stone gialla a punto.

BOCCIATA (take out) in questa immagine (fig. 3) la stone rossa sta bocciando la stone gialla. La bocciata è più forte del tiro a punto e serve per portare fuori dal gioco la stone avversaria. Ogni mano (end) deve essere attentamente pianificata dalla squadra in modo da piazzare l’ultima stone più vicina al centro possibile. Ci sono alcuni fattori chiave che condizionano la strategia:

In ogni “mano” la strategia si basa innanzitutto su chi tira l’ultima stone poiché in questo caso la squadra tenterà di segnare più di un punto. Normalmente quando si ha l’ultima stone si cerca di tenere il centro del campo aperto (cioè senza stone) per poter entrare nel centro della casa con l’ultimo tiro. Al contrario se non si ha l’ultima stone si cercherà di “rubare la mano” e cioè ottenere il punto. Per fare questo la squadra rossa cercherà di prendere il controllo della parte centrale del campo, realizzando delle guardie (stone fuori dalla casa) in quest’area.

2. La mano

Nel considerare la strategia di gioco spesso all’inizio si è più difensivi per diventare più offensivi verso le fine della partita. Questo permette di abituarsi alle condizioni del ghiaccio e di comprenderne studiare le debolezze dell’avversario, mantenendo il punteggio sotto controllo. Molte partite sono vinte o perse nelle ultime mani.

LA REGOLA DELLA “FREE GUARD ZONE”

Nessun sasso posizionato nella free guard zone può essere rimosso dal gioco ad opera dell’avversario fino a quando le prima 4 stone della mano sono state giocate. La free guard zone è l’area antistante la casa, compresa tra quest’ultima e la hog line. In questo modo entrambe le squadre sono obbligate a giocare con una o più sassi davanti alla casa. Questo obbliga a strategie più aggressive.

fter the 16 stones have been thrown and the points counted (the number of stones near the centre compared to those of the adversary), play is resumed. In official competitions 10 ends are played, although in many tournaments 8 ends are played in a match lasting around two and a half hours. It is a sport of skill that requires the players to think carefully, studying the moves of the adversary and utilising the best tactic, and hence the fundamental element is concentration.

The basics: DRAW the image here (fig. 1, previous page) is of a perfect draw exactly on the tee line, in the centre of the “house”.

How to play T

wo teams, consisting of 4 athletes each, face each other on a frozen rink 44.5 metres in length. The match is played from one end to the other: each player throws two stones (made from a special granite coming from a small Scottish island, each weighing around 19 Kg and equipped with a handle), alternating with their adversary and trying to get as close as possible to the centre of a target marked out on the ice. The skip is the one who throws the last two stones and works out the strategy of the game. After the throw, two players move over the rink closely preceding the stone and, with the aid of horsehair or cloth brushes, assist their trajectory.

GUARD the guard allows for a draw to be covered, defending

TAKEOUT in this image (fig. 3, previous page) the red stone is taking out the yellow stone. The takeout is stronger than the draw and serves to take the adversary’s stone out of the game. Each end must be carefully planned by the team so as to place the last stone as near to the centre as possible. There are several key factors that affect the strategy:

1. The last shot

In each end, the strategy is based above all on which delivers the last stone, since in this case that team will attempt to score more than one point. Normally, when the team has the last stone, they try to keep the centre of the ice rink open so as to be able to get into the centre of the house with the last shot. In contrast, the team that does not have the last stone will try to steal and so get the point. To do this the team without last rock will try to gain control of the central part of the rink, making guards (stones out of the house) in this area.

2. The End

The strategy of the game is often more defensive at the start of play, becoming more attacking towards the end of the match. This allows the players to get used to the conditions of the ice and to get to know the weaknesses of the opponent, keeping the score under control. Many matches are won or lost in the last ends.

The â&#x20AC;&#x153;Free Guard Zoneâ&#x20AC;? Rule

No stone positioned in the free guard zone can be removed from the game by the opponent until the first 4 stones of the end have been played. The free guard zone is the area facing the house, between the latter and the hog line. In this way both teams are forced to play with one or more stones in front of the house. This makes for more aggressive strategies.

The keynote is fair play

uardando una partita di curling si ha ancora oggi la sensazione di assistere a uno spettacolo di altri tempi. Anche perché un ricco cerimoniale di regole non scritte avvolge questa pratica sportiva. Parola d’ordine fair play: è infatti una stretta di mano a dare il “LA” ai giochi e le congratulazioni reciproche sono d’obbligo a fine partita. Mentre gli atleti in campo sono i principali arbitri del gioco, deputati a mantenere la correttezza della partita: nessun trucco, nessuna volontà di disturbare l’altra squadra, in campo si è avversari, ma al termine della partita tutti sono amici, fanno parte di una grande famiglia, quella del curling. I giocatori si alternano, la concentrazione è palpabile dall’esterno. Lo spettatore per tre ore viene trasportato in un mondo parallelo, caratterizzato dai più autentici valori dello sport: competizione, professionalità e correttezza. Provare per credere.

n colpo ben eseguito è un piacere da vedere: le tradizioni secolari del curling vengono osservate e applicate nel vero spirito del gioco. I giocatori di curling giocano per vincere, ma mai di umiliare gli avversari. Un vero “curler” preferisce perdere piuttosto che vincere ingiustamente.

atching a game of curling, we still today get the sensation of witnessing a spectacle from past times. This is partly because there is a rich ceremony of unwritten rules governing the game. The keynote is fair play: in fact, a handshake starts off the game and reciprocal congratulations are de rigueur at the end of the match. The athletes on the ice rink are the main referees of the match, charged with maintaining correct behaviour throughout the game: no tricks, and no attempt to disturb the other team, who, although adversaries on the rink, are friends again at the end of the match, all part of the big family that is curling. The players alternate, the concentration is tangible to those watching. For three hours the spectators are transported to a parallel world, characterised by a more authentic sense of sportsmanship: competition, professionalism and correctness. Seeing is believing. well executed shot is a pleasure to see; it is good to see that the age-old traditions of curling are observed and applied in the true spirit of the game. Players of curling play to win, but never to humiliate their opponent. A real “curler” prefers to lose rather than win unfairly.

INTERVISTA ALLA SQUADRA ITALIANA Joel Thierry Retornaz , Silvio Zanotelli, Davide Zanotelli, Julien Michele Genre e Giorgio Da Rin. Sono questi i nomi della nazionale italiana che a Cortina, dal 3 all’11 aprile, difenderà i colori di casa durante i Campionati Mondiali Maschili di Curling. Sono 5 ragazzi giovanissimi, nati tutti tra il 1983 e il 1989, che sul campo hanno guadagnato il diritto di rappresentare l’Italia in questa importantissima competizione: dopo aver vinto il Campionato Italiano nell’edizione 2009 si sono battuti all’ultimo stone contro il cortinese C.C. Dolomiti uscendone vincitori. E proprio dal C.C. Dolomiti arriva il quinto giocatore, Giorgio Da Rin, che da avversario diventa compagno. L’atleta di Cortina scenderà sul ghiaccio con la doppia emozione di giocare sul ghiaccio di casa propria. Il resto della squadra arriva da Cembra, in provincia di Trento. Li abbiamo incontrati a pochi giorni dall’inizio dell’evento, non nascondono le tante aspettative e l’entusiasmo, il tutto condito dal giusto pizzico di emozione.

Perchè avete scelto il curling come sport principale da praticare?

Il curling si gioca da sempre sia a Cortina che a Cembra, ci siamo avvicinati o grazie ad amici o parenti che già lo praticavano o con i corsi organizzati dalle scuole. è uno sport che ti permette di viaggiare, di conoscere gente e posti nuovi, ma soprattutto ti trasmette molti valori.

Qual’è la caratteristica del curling che più vi affascina?

è un vero gioco di squadra: non puoi vincere se tutto e tutti non fanno il proprio dovere. Una partita è sempre in costante evoluzione e cambiamento, ricca di stimoli: è sempre facile definire la tattica da seguire, ma non sempre si riesce a realizzarla completamente e così bisogna essere pronti ad adattarsi alla situazione e cambiare in corso d’opera.

Due anni fa non ero nemmeno sicuro di qualificarmi alla fase finale di un Campionato Italiano, ora sono qualificato per un mondiale, troppo bello (Julien) Non me ne rendo ancora conto, credo. Cortina è il mio Paese, la mia famiglia, i miei amici. Il curling è il mio sport, la mia grande occasione. Cosa posso volere di più! Entrare allo Stadio Olimpico del Ghiaccio sarà un’emozione che immagino sia impossibile da dimenticare. (Giorgio)

Che cosa un giocatore di curling deve avere di più: muscoli o cervello? Come vi siete preparati a questo evento? Entrambi. La concentrazione e la lucidità mentali sono indispensabili, ma prestare molta attenzione alla preparazione atletica può fare la differenza: sul campo si è più freschi, più dinamici. Una partita dura quasi tre ore e durante una competizione importante come il mondiale si arrivano a giocare anche 14 partite… Direi che è fondamentale essere preparati.

Come vi sentite a partecipare a questo mondiale “in casa”?

“Mi sembra di rivivere le emozioni delle Olimpiadi di Torino sicuramente tutti gli occhi saranno puntati su di noi!. (Joel) Già è un sogno poter partecipare ad un Mondiale. In casa poi… (Silvio e Davide)

Tanto e duro allenamento. Lo sappiamo solo da fine gennaio che siamo qualificati, il tempo non è molto per prepararsi al top. Per fortuna avevamo già lavorato molto bene prima come società, partecipando a varie tappe di CCT in Europa.

Quanti di voi non chiuderanno occhio prima della prova finale? Io dormo!!! (Joel) Io credo di dormire (Davide) Forse io farò fatica (Silvio) Io NON dormo di sicuro!!! (Julien) Io non dormo già da ora. (Giorgio)

Qual’è l’avversario che temete di più?

Tutti in egual maniera!!! Dobbiamo anche stare attenti a noi stessi...

esiste spirito sportivo, quando uno dei due inizia ad infrangerne anche una sola, lo spirito sportivo viene a mancare.

Qual è l’insegnamento più importante che vi ha lasciato uno sport come il curling?

Il consiglio di uno sportivo alla società attuale.

Bisogna essere una vera squadra per vincere, altrimenti non si va da nessuna parte. Il curling è un sport pulito, dove il Fair Play e i veri valori sportivi ancora esistono e sono palpabili anche dall’esterno. Giocando a curling abbiamo imparato soprattutto che per accarezzare un sogno bisogna crederci fino in fondo: partecipiamo al Mondiale, questa ne è una bella prova.

Vedi sopra! rispetta le regole nello sport così come nella vita. A volte facendo sport si imparare a vivere meglio la vita, rispettando il duro lavoro proprio e degli altri. si impara a confrontarsi con il lavoro degli altri. Inoltre facendo sport si impara a vivere e a relazionarsi con un gruppo.

Definiteci quello che in tanti chiamano lo spirito sportivo.

Si vedrà. Venite allo stadio. Il calore del pubblico di sicuro ci può sostenere.

Ci sono delle regole da rispettare, tante regole (scritte, non scritte, morali, di gioco ecc...) se le rispetto io come il mio avversario allora

Un pronostico per questo mondiale?

These are the names of the Italian national team that will defend their team colours during the Men’s world Curling Championship at Cortina from 3rd to 11th April. They are 5 young men, all born between 1983 and 1989, who have earned the right to represent Italy in this extremely important competition: after winning the Italian Championship in 2006, they battled to the last stone against the C.C. Dolomiti from Cortina, emerging as the victors. It is precisely from the C.C. Dolomiti that the fifth player, Giorgio Da Rin, comes; he has gone from being an adversary to become their team mate. The Cortina athlete will go out onto the ice with the added emotion of playing on his home rink. The rest of the team comes from Cembra, in the province of Trento. We met the boys a few days before the start of the event; they could not conceal their many expectations and their enthusiasm, with an added touch of the right amount of emotion.

How did you prepare for this event?

A lot of hard training. We didn’t know we’d qualified until the end of January, and so we haven’t had a great deal of time to get fully prepared. Luckily, we had already been working very well before as a team, participating in various CCT stages in Europe.

Why did you choose curling as your main sport?

What is the feature of curling that fascinates you most?

Which adversary do you fear the most?

Curling has always been played both at Cortina and at Cembra; we came together thanks to friends and relatives who already played the sport or else through courses organised by the schools. It is a sport that gives you the chance to travel and to get to know new people and places, but above all it teaches you a lot of values.

It is a true team game: you cannot win if everyone does not pull his weight. A match is in constant evolution and change, rich in stimuli: it is always easy to define the tactic to be followed but it is not always possible to achieve it fully, and so you need to be ready to adapt to the situation and change tactic during the game.

What must a curling player have more of: muscle or brain?

Both are equally important. Concentration and mental lucidity are indispensable, but paying close attention to athletic preparation can make all the difference: on the rink you are fresher and more dynamic. A match lasts almost three hours, and during an important competition such as the World Championship you might play as many as 14 games… I would say that it is essential to be prepared.

How do you feel about participating in this World Championship at home?

“I feel as if I am reliving the emotions of the Turin Olympics; all eyes will definitely be on us!.” (Joel) It is a dream, of course, to be able to participate in a World Championship, and at home too… (Silvio and Davide) Two years ago I wasn’t even sure of qualifying for the final stage of an Italian championship, and now I’ve qualified for a World Championship; it’s great (Julien) I don’t think it’s begun to sink in yet. Cortina is my home town, where I have my family and friends. Curling is my sport, my great chance. What more could I ask for? Walking into the Olympic Ice Stadium will be a feeling that I imagine will be unforgettable. (Giorgio)

What is the most important thing that a sport like curling has taught you?

You must be a real team to win, otherwise you won’t get anywhere. Curling is a clean sport, in which fair play and real sporting values still exist and are perceivable from outside. Playing at curling, we have learnt above all that if you want a dream to come true you have to believe in it right to the end; we are participating in the World Championship: this is proof enough.

Can you define what many people term sporting spirit?

There are rules to be respected, a lot of rules (written ones, nonwritten ones, moral ones, rules of the game and so on...). If I respect them all, and my adversary does too, then there is a sporting spirit; but when one of us begins by breaking just one of them, the sporting spirit is lost.

What’s your advice as a sportsman to our present-day society?

See the above! Respect the rules in sport as in life. At times, doing a sport teaches you to live your life better; if you have respect for your own hard work and that of others, you learn to measure your work against that of others. Moreover, by doing sport you learn to live with and relate to a group.

And a prediction for this World Championship?

We’ll see. Come to the stadium. The warmth of the spectators will be a definite support to us.

here will be a figurative graphic art competition for all students of the primary, middle and high schools of the Istituto Comprensivo Zardini (Cortina, San Vito, Vodo and Cibiana), the Polo Val Boite and the Istituto Montessori, as well as a literary competition for all high school students who prefer writing to graphic art.

he works of art will be displayed at the Olympic Ice Stadium of Cortina and will be judged by the athletes of the 12 nations participating in the Curling World Championship of 2010.

he literary works will be judged by the jury of honour consisting of Andrea Franceschi, mayor of Cortina, Angela Menardi, a curler who represented Italy at the 2010 Para-Olympic Games in Vancouver, and Kristian Ghedina, a player in the Italian national team and Alpine skiing champion.

Tradition and innovation, past, present and future: these are the keynotes of the wide range of products from t-shirts to sweatshirts and jackets. The graphic logos, treatments, colour codes and inscriptions all have about them an air of the past, in a classic style that is “a little vintage” and “a little aged”, but matched with models and fabrics that are the very latest fashion.

In particolare ringrazio la Federazione Italiana Sport Ghiaccio per aver dato il via a questa bellissima avventura e la World Curling Federation per aver creduto in Cortina, assegnandole il Campionato del Mondo Maschile di Curling; ringrazio inoltre il Comune di Cortina e la Società G.I.S. per il contributo economico e logistico fornito, la Provincia di Belluno, la Regione Veneto ed il C.O.N.I. per il patrocinio concesso, il Consorzio Cortina Turismo per aver creduto nel valore turistico dell’evento, collaborando nelle attività di promozione e comunicazione. Grazie anche a tutte le persone che hanno aderito al Comitato d’Onore ed in particolare al Presidente di tale Comitato Dott. Enrico Cisnetto per aver dato grande pregio all’evento, agli sponsor tutti che ci hanno sostenuto economicamente e agli oltre 200 volontari, senza i quali tutto questo non sarebbe stato possibile. Sperando di non aver dimenticato nessuno, ringrazio genericamente tutti quanti hanno voluto questo Campionato del Mondo, lo hanno sostenuto ed hanno in qualunque maniera contribuito alla sua realizzazione. In particular, I want to thank the Federazione Italiana Sport Ghiaccio (The Italian Federation of Ice Sports) for having given the go-ahead for this wonderful adventure and to the World Curling Federation for having had enough faith in Cortina to assign to her the Men’s World Curling Championship. I would also like to thank the Town Council of Cortina, the Società G.I.S. for their financial and logistic contribution, the Province of Belluno, the Region of Veneto and the C.O.N.I. association for their patronage, and the Consorzio Cortina Turismo for having believed in the value for tourism of the event by collaborating in the promotion and communication activities.
