OPTIMISTIC FOR SOMETHING “BETTER” With the long, tumultuous elections behind us and a new President Elect about to be sworn in, many questions are being raised about where we stand as a nation. No matter which camp you reside in one thing is for sure… we all hope for better. Better business, better economy and better times all around. Amongst all of the uncertainty, we have actually seen a lot of movement in the children’s market. Retailers are shifting strategies and purchasing potential. All the while new brands are quietly popping up every day. And with promises of manufacturing jobs coming back to the states, these are all great signs of what the future could possibly bring.

Kids Creations Mabel + Honey is a new, colorful, kid-inspired clothing line that is designed by Mary Helen Studio, a Cincinnati-based fashion program, that teaches kids of all ages to explore the world of design, fashion, sewing, and creativity. Mary Helen, owner and creative designer of Mary Helen Studio, partnered with Carousel Brands to market and distribute Mabel + Honey because she wanted to concentrate her efforts into her studio, students, and design work while still bringing age-appropriate garments to households across the country. Helen muses, “I think Mabel + Honey’s partnership with Mary Helen Studio feeds off each other and inspires kids.” Mary Helen Studio allows kids to learn new skills and be confident in what they are wearing and who they are as a person. The spirit of confidence, strength, and beauty manifests itself in Mabel + Honey designs. Mabel + Honey’s spring designs are inspired by objects and events that incite inspiration, joy, and wonder in Mary Helen Studio’s kid designers. The Spring 2017 collection, delivering to retailers now, features whimsical oversized pockets, flared skirts, scallop layers, and colorful patterns paired together. The patterns chosen were inspired by things you would find in neighborhood parks, such as kites, butterflies, birds, and an assortment of flowers. Mary Helen Studio was created in 2012 to provide a place for children to be creative with kids their age. Helen explained, “When I was younger, I always wanted a place to sew and create. There was nothing available for kids. It was all geared towards adults. At Mary Helen Studio, we let children in on the design process and teach them first-hand about fashion and sewing.” Helen continues, “Seeing a kid’s sense of accomplishment when they finish a project is the most rewarding feeling. They are so proud and happy to have created something on their own!”

Apple Village —Text and photography by Janet A. Jacobs
M
ore than just a shopping destination, a visit to Apple Village is a special and delightful experience. The store is situated in a spacious locale set back a bit from the bustle of street traffic in Upper Montclair, New Jersey. Its thoughtfully selected merchandise is displayed in a cohesive and uncluttered manner, making it pleasant to wander and explore. It’s not surprising to learn that owner Alexandria Pavel’s prior job experience included visual merchandising and store design, as well as being brand manager and buyer for a fair trade store of non-profit organization Greenheart, in Chicago. “At Greenheart, I designed their store and built relationships with the artists,” she explains. “Our wholesale line from Greenheart was a tabletop collection.” Alexandria enjoyed merging handmade items with items from smaller designer companies, and growing relationships that led to building businesses together. This concept is now being continued at Apple Village. “I like to have the store be a surprising mix of merchandise, evoking imagination with items that are ethically produced, handmade, and a little boho, along with the funky and unexpected.”
14 | It’s a Kidsworld
Alexandria creates the “village” feeling of Apple Village by collaborating with other local businesses that help and support each other. The store holds many special events, such as “Story Time” with Frankie Faison, an actor who reads aloud from a picture- less book; “Baby and Me” yoga classes; and a workshop series called “Preparing for your Best Birth” which included segments about baby wearing with slings and carriers, birth preparation, and Alexandria’s own segment about designing eco nurseries. At an event with an Indian block-printing textile company every guest, both kids and parents, took home a tee shirt they had painted themselves.“We like to create an environment where people are comfortable and like to stay…a community space,” says Alexandria. The store’s whimsical mix of merchandise helps enhance this inviting feeling. Lighting, furniture, décor, toys, baby items and clothing represent a mixture of styles ranging from modern to bohemian, eclectic and funky. Apple Village keeps the eco mood strong with Plush Heads, a collection of decorative animal heads made of felt. The line is designed in the United Kingdom by Fiona Walker and ethically produced in India. Peruvian artisans are represented by a line of plush animals from Shupaca. Although they are made of alpaca, the characters are bears and other animals…but surprisingly not llamas! Also from Peru are beautiful pillows made from heirloom textiles, woven on looms by traditional methods. Dream catchers made from multi-fabrics and kid-size teepees from Little Brave Ones are strong sellers, as are washable 100% cotton rugs by Lorena Canals. And to help kids create a personalized environment at home, there are custom-made indoor clubhouse doors by The Clubhouse Company. The company’s creator uses all natural Alexandria Pavel materials to build

whatever the client wishes for, including such imaginative themes as an ice castle, a Hobbit house, and a rustic log cabin. Apple Village even offers services to design residential and business spaces for children, such as a recent designing of a modern Pediatric dental service in Montclair. Clothing items displayed throughout the store include eco-friendly and organic collections along with funky tee shirts for little hipsters.“We do really well with Kickee Pants,”Alexandria says of the all-bamboo fabric collection. Rock tees by Rowdy Sprouts are especially popular. Their extensive line of raglan sleeve tee shirts and softly washed thermal polos feature graphics from both vintage and current rock groups, offering an option for everyone’s musical taste. No Biggie, an organic cotton line from Israel, offers updated baby designs such as coverall with deconstructed seams and paint splatter graphic. Best selling styles for babies often feature fun mottos such as the “Hug Life”
romper and tees by Little Dude ‘n Dudette, and “Same shirt, different day” tee shirts by The Bee & the Fox. Other popular styles include the “Hangry Cookie Monster” graphic onsie by Little Dilascia; rompers and coveralls by Young & Free, leggings and apparel for kids and women by Nooworks; and custom designed “Montclair” city logo items by Megan Lee Designs and Little Colley Design. While it’s easy to understand where the “village” part of the store’s name comes from, the “apple” reference is more surprising. Alexandria explains,” I find a lot of strength in apples. My great-grandfather lived to be 105 years old, and he was still climbing apple trees on the Greek Island of Andros. My son’s name is Milo which means apple in Greek. I like the idea of a strong village, a strong community.” Combining strong values, pleasing ambience and great merchandise will surely bring longevity to Apple Village.

Footwear Report
One Step Ahead —By Janet A. Jacobs
The children’s shoe market stays on its toes with exciting new brands and super-savvy retailers. Three fashion-forward professionals speak to It’s a Kidsworld about what’s one step ahead for kid’s shoes in 2017.
Geppetto’s by New Portugal, LLC For Carla Rocha, the creation of a special shoe collection was a natural evolution to her already established business, New Portugal LLC.“I started the business because I own a company that imports lines from Spain and Portugal. My customers were asking me for a special shoe to wear with our clothing. I started designing shoes as a favor to my clients,” says Carla. At a past edition of the ENK Children’s Club show in New York, Carla and her New Portugal lines were situated in a booth that was far from the main flow of traffic.“I was at the end of the end,” Carla says laughingly,“and no one knew me.” Naturally she was a bit concerned. However, the beautiful shoes she had brought to accessorize her apparel lines soon caught the attention of Allen Blum, founder of The Great American Shoe Show, and Francine Blum, a highly experienced children’s shoe sales representative. Carla explains,“Allen and Francine found me and began to bring clients to my booth to get their opinions about my shoes. Everyone felt the designs were beautiful.”This marked the beginning of Carla’s new business venture: Geppetto’s—a high quality children’s shoe collection produced in Spain. From the beginning it was important to Carla that Geppetto’s shoes reflect the same high standards as her clothing collections. The shoes are made Geppetto’s of the best quality leather and are produced in
28 | It’s a Kidsworld
Europe with old word craftsmanship.“You don’t find many places like these anymore,” Carla says of her shoe’s factories. “There are not many companies producing high quality shoes for children. We craft each shoe for the child.” Comfort and correct fit is also taken very seriously.“Sometimes I have an idea for a design, but when I meet with the maker to discuss it, he tells me it won’t be comfortable. We care a lot about the comfort of the child.” Carla follows international fashion trends to ensure that shoe colors and designs are up-to the-moment and right for the season’s apparel. For the Spring/Summer collection the color Rose Gold is very strong—a pretty rose pink with metallic shades. Geppetto’s is currently specializing in dressy shoes for girls, but there is already a smaller line of boy’s dressy shoes which will be expanding due to market requests. Carla feels strongly about the importance of meeting clients as well as meeting with the shoe makers in Spain. Her hands-on attention to all aspects of the business is the key to Geppetto’s continuing growth and success.
Livie & Luca Rose Ann Valencia, the Northeast sales manager for Livie & Luca, is happy to explain the philosophy that defines the company.“The brand offers a little whimsy,” she says. “We like to spread joy with our ‘Joyful Little Soles.’ Every one of our shoes is made with a lot of thought.”This helps explain why Livie & Luca shoes so often become cherished family keepsakes, especially the baby shoes.“There is a huge following for the brand, especially on social media,” says Rose Ann. The line was started eleven years ago by two women who had previously had no experience in the kid’s shoe market: Mitzi Rivas and Ami Garcia. While Mitzi is still behind a lot of the design inspiration, they now also work with in-house designer Lizzi Thayer. This high quality, all leather shoe line has since become a key resource for premium children’s shoes selling in high end boutiques throughout the United States, Canada and even in Europe. “We have a European look; we tend to use a full ‘last’ so the baby has plenty of wiggle room,” Rose Ann says. Other value-adding features include leather lining, which makes the shoes breathable; and four varieties of soles which add flexibility and durability. The fastest growing segment of the company is the baby collection, currently making up 20% of the line, while 65% of the business is in the Toddler range. At the request of customers, the brand has now expanded to include Youth sizes, further enabling Livie & Luca shoes to “Spread Joy” to kids of all ages. The all-important “fun” aspect of Livie & Luca is added with unique and whimsical design details. For fall the line featured an adorable shoe called the Molly, referring to a
sweet bunny character of the same name. The shoe was a cross between Mary Jane and tee-strap, and included cut-out bunny “ears” as part of the tee-strap. Equally clever styles include elephant and badger designs for boys. For spring, there’s a two-toned shoe with appliquéd cat and dimensional ear flaps. The Pio-Pio (meaning “Bird Song”) design has become a signature style, featuring a stitched bird available in a Powder Blue and Silver Metallic. The popular Petal shoe with raindrop cut-outs comes in a fun range including Marigold and Hot Pink patent leather. “We’re all about novelty in our brand”, says Rose Ann. “We rarely do black—we’re all about color. We sell Marigold shoes better than anyone! We’re definitely different... in a good way.”

Footwear Report
Ibiza Kidz Although Internet shopping can be convenient at times, there are some categories of shopping that simply must be done in person to be done correctly. High on that list is shopping for children’s shoes, as Carole Husiak of Ibiza Kidz knows well, having been part of the retail scene in New York City for twenty eight years. Ibiza Kidz offers an excellent selection of footwear for girls, boys and babies, along with a fun assortment of clothing and toys.“We emphasize the fact that you get great service here,” says Carole.“We’re a community shop... we support the local community and we get support in return.” One of the most important services they offer is to expertly fit each child’s foot to make sure they get the right shoe.“Every foot is different,” says Carole.“We regularly hear from parents that they ordered a shoe on-line and it didn’t fit. Every shoe has a ‘personality’—a certain width, an in-step. We know how to recommend the right shoe for each child… and we’re nice about it! That’s a big deal.” For this Fall/Winter season, the store’s main shoe labels are: Naturino, Stride Rite, See Kai Run, Tsukihoshi, Bobux, Camper; Saucony and Geox sneakers; Hunter and Gortex rain boots.“Right now we’re selling Gortex waterproof boots very well. We also sell lots of Uggs snow boots. Uggs came out with many waterproof options and they’re offering more variety of styles. I match the price of Uggs to their website—it’s what’s been happening trend-wise,” says Carole.“For Spring I’ll add to the mix. We’ll be getting Sun San’s Salt Water sandals. Their big feature is that they’re priced well and you can get them wet. We do a knock-out business with Salt Water, and also with Native—a plastic water shoe featuring great styling with perforated holes for water and to let the air in. I can’t keep them in the store!“ As for today’s shopping climate, Carole feels that consumers are becoming ever more price conscious, and are buying more in the moment than in advance. They’re concerned about spending and they want to make sure the shoe fits at the time of purchase. Ibiza Kidz customers are fashion-forward, not conservative. They’re looking for color, fun and funky designs—but the bottom line is they must be priced well.“We make shopping here a fun experience. We have toys, music, we offer a ‘Frequent Footer’s Club’ to build loyalty,” Carole says,“In this age you have to do that more than ever.”
