Long Time Houston Business Celebrates 61 years in the Apparel Industry
Paty, Inc. announces the exciting celebration of their 61st Year Anniversary. The company has been in business designing and producing handmade baby gowns and infant apparel for many decades. Its’ rich history began in Lima, Peru in 1955 when two sisters began crafting their one of a kind infant garments in a small garage. The small business that started in Peru evolved into the celebrated Paty, Inc. brand that is a leader in Americanmade high-quality infant apparel. They specialize in infant layette gowns, rompers, and newborn sets and are also well known for their Signature Paty Knit fabric which is still manufactured in Houston. Though Paty is still true to its American-made roots, they’ve expanded their product line to include a Peruvian sourced Pima Cotton collection. The Pima Collection, which is a tribute to the company’s Peruvian legacy, features super soft Pima Cotton, hand embroidered designs, and new fabric prints. They’ve also launched a toddler collection last Fall that met a demand that stores have been asking for. Paty is available in their showroom at the Dallas Market Center and has market representation in Atlanta and Florida. For more information please visit www.patyinc.com

The Klein Group —By Janet A. Jacobs

peaking to Marilyn Klein by phone, one is immediately struck by her captivating warmth, charm, energy and enthusiasm for an industry she’s been part of for forty years. Although The Klein Group company was started“only” thirty-three years ago, Marilyn’s prior career history began ten years earlier, during the unique era of the 1970’s.“My first career was television and communications,” said Marilyn.” However, early on, I bought some children’s wear samples from a salesman and began to sell them out of my house in Houston. When one day a kid got bubble gum in my carpet, my partner and I quickly decided to open a store instead!” The rented store building they selected had formerly been a psychedelic-era “Head Shop”, and was badly in need of a make-over. The owner said, “If you clean it up you can have free rent for six months.”A welcome break indeed for a brand new business! One day a hippie-type couple walked into the store and began looking around. Although they didn’t look like the usual children’s wear customer, Marilyn and her staff gave them attentive and gracious service. A couple of weeks later two women came into the store: Ann Light and Sue Goldstein, authors of a wildly popular book of the time called “The Underground Shopper”. The prior“hippy”customers had actually been scouts looking for potential stores to be included in the next edition of the book.“Ann and Sue took our clothes and featured them on TV. Because of this break, we soon had so much business we had to open three stores! We ended up buying close-outs and expanded to ten traditional retail stores all over Texas.” Business boomed well into the 1980’s when the Texas economy took a turn for the worse. After being forced to close several stores, Marilyn took the advice of Irwin Chaiken, a colleague and friend who suggested she become a children’s wear sales representative. For Marilyn’s new career, Irwin

tried to change her individualistic, funky style of dressing by advising her to wear attire he thought more appropriate for a professional sales rep: a conservative business suit with shoulder pads and a foulard tie. When Marilyn walked into her first appointment dressed this way, the buyer, who she had known for years, said, “Why are you dressed like that? It’s not Halloween!” Doing things in her own inimitable style Marilyn began to build her new business, which has evolved steadily ever since. Since she’s had so much hands-on experience as a specialty store owner, this type of privately owned store has always been her first love. “I’ve sat on the other side of the table”, said Marilyn. “Specialty stores know what they can buy. Every team member has a purpose and they’re all great at what they do. They add so much to the business! They know that we want every customer to feel like our showroom is their home.” Another special advantage of The Klein Group is the ultra- creative window displays of the company’s showrooms in both Dallas and Atlanta. Currently the windows have a “Beauty Shop” theme, which has drawn lots of favorable attention. “I believe that windows show who you are, and what you represent.” Not surprisingly, The

Klein Group’s clever displays have won several window dressing competitions. The companies Marilyn represents include a variety of lines from babies to tween sizes. “We have had lines like Hannah Banana, Truly Me and Baby Sara, Lipstik, Cach Cach, Elisa B, Imoga and Mae Li Rose that have been with us for years and have helped make our showroom a success.”“We do Miss Me jeans and Silver jeans. Vintage Havana has been a great tween line for us. P.P.L.A. [People’s Project Los Angeles] was a contemporary women’s line that had shared the same contemporary adult showroom as Miss Me. We told the owner that they needed to do a tween line for us, and they did. It’s been a phenomenal success! For tweens, it’s all about comfort clothes—item tops, leggings.” Accessories are another huge category for The Klein Group. Marilyn said, “Bari Lynn is amazing. They started out small, and expanded from one little barrette to becoming a huge part of our showroom. It’s a very “on trend” line,
“Working with the Klein group has been everything for us. Marilyn deeply understood this brand from the get-go and it has been more than a rep/line relationship—it’s been a strategic partnership with someone who from very first meeting has felt like a very dear old friend.” —Meredith Madsen, CEO/Owner of GliterNation 34 | It’s a Kidsworld

Little Miss Twin Star offers unique enamel jewelry, while I-Scream makes fun items, pillows and tote bags. “We even sell sunscreen for kids. It’s a lotion with glitter in it. When the glitter runs out, it’s time to put on more sun screen.”Baby shoes called First Steps make little fringed moccasins, and a leather shoe that can come plain or with a printed“scripture”prayer on the bottom of the sole. A company called Chooze designs purposely mismatched shoes with different prints featured on each shoe. From baby clothes to accessories, to the trendiest styles for tweens, Marilyn always tries to think“out of the box”.“I always say, if you keep doing the same things, you’ll get the same results,”she remarked. As for new enterprises, Marilyn and partners are currently promoting a separate company called Fluttersales. EURO WATCH SPRING/SUMMER 2016 —Text and photography by Janet A. Jacobs
I
t was a pleasure to kick off the Fall/Winter kids fashion season at Kleine Fabriek, Amsterdam. This show represented a wonderful selection of companies ranging from superb, classically Dutch lines such as Jottum and Oilily , to casual contemporary Dutch sportswear from Cars Jeans, Indian Blue Jeans and Petrol, to sophisticated sweater knitwear from Kidscase and more. Dutch designers are well known for adventurous color combinations and this season was no exception. Lebig intensified their already vibrant color palette with shiny fabrics and dazzling gold pieces, while Tumble ‘n Dry and many others featured shades of green for boys and girls. Kleine Fabriek has steadily increased its selection of international companies each season, now including many important labels from France, Italy, Belgium, Denmark and Spain. Belgium’s J‘n Joy made a welcome return to the show, recreating their world-famous brand of sun-drenched sportswear for every season, while Denmark’s Molo offered a huge line of clever printed styles, including a popcorn print and a vendor serving real popcorn from a cart! The trend seminars offered at Kleine Fabriek were a great tool to get an early view of the season’s new direction. Excellent presenters JUNIOR GAULTIER offered thoughtful and original observations, with some unifying 46 | It’s a Kidsworld

thoughts emerging: as the world grows ever more technological, there’s a greater desire for handmade things, do-it-yourself crafts and “digital craft” which merges the two worlds. The motifs of Oilily’s collection depicted hand knitting, sewing and painting, featuring a beautiful print inspired by a child’s finger painting. Nature influenced color palettes and graphic themes were stronger than ever, seen across the board in all age groups. Textural fabrics showed nature’s inspiration as in eco faux furs, distressed finishes and irregular surfaces. Designer Antoine Peters spoke about his capsule knitwear collection for Kidscase inspired by his newly born son. Other speakers focused on a need to slow down a bit to enjoy life more. And what better place is there to appreciate life than artistic, amiable Amsterdam? Pitti Bimbo, Florence, still the largest and most comprehensive show for children’s fashion, took a full three days and lots of energy to cover completely. On the show’s first day all visitors went directly from the registration area to the vibrant KidzFIZZ section, where an eclectic mix of creative companies showed their lines in open, boutiquelike stands. Well known designers including Anne Kurris and others exhibited alongside such talented creators as The Bonnie Mob , who showedan exceptional collection of sweater knitwear featuring characters set in North Pole scenes. The excitement generated in KidzFIZZ during the first morning continued throughout the rest of the show. The main pavilion of Pitti showcased top Italian collections and international brands, including key Spanish LITTLE ELEVEN PARIS companies like Boboli

Style Watch and Barcarola , who presented very enjoyable runway shows. In today’s world it’s a rare treat to see children’s clothes that are almost couture, such as the gorgeous collections of Quis Quis, Mimisol, Ermanno Scervino and others. Use of the finest fabrics, lavish embellishment and expert styling skills make these luxurious collections something truly special. Cesare Paciotti presented OILILY a luxe line with an edgier vibe, featuring lots of black and gold leather embellished with mirrors, and a shimmering reptile skin print in green and violet. Their elaborately studded shoes and accessories were especially popular. In general there were lots of high contrast black and white combinations shown in many collections, often accompanied by red: black and white stripes, dots and animal skin prints with a “Circus” theme at Laura Biagiotti; a black and white striped peplum sweater worn with white lace tutu at Twin Set; red (an important color this season) pieces decorated with black trim and jewels at Ermanno Scervino; and a striking optical interplay of black, white and red sweater stripes at Gaultier Junior. Outerwear was an important segment of many collections, especially shiny quilted bomber jackets; new takes on leather motorcycle jackets, including those appliquéd with pink fur at Philipp Plein; and plush jackets in a variety of faux furs. Twin Set, Simonetta, T-Love and Special Day all presented outstanding collections of feminine, fashionable girl’s wear with that unmistakable Italian flair. Funky boots and sneakers on the booth’s mannequins added a hip modern touch to the lovely ensembles. Moving on to Paris, buyers enjoyed a different ambiance and selection of exhibitors at the Playtime show. This venue is growing steadily at all three of their locations: Playtime Paris, New York and Tokyo. Baby and toddler collections 48 | It’s a Kidsworld

were especially well represented at Playtime, including a popular organic line from the Netherlands called Noesser. Stand-out designs were seen at Tootsa, featuring a great group of intarsia sweaters with an Arctic animal theme, and Le Chat Mechant, whose unique seasonal theme was the city of Brussels. Many smaller and newer companies found Playtime a great showcase to promote their lines to an increasingly international group of visitors. During the same week there was another trade show in Paris called Kid. This new kid’s show on the block was held in a beautiful building that was once Paris’s first department store, decorated with white walls, gold chandeliers and wooden staircases. In this elegant and intimate setting the carefully edited collections received lots of well earned attention. After years of absence from the kid’s trade show scene, it’s wonderful that Paris has re-emerged as an important city for top international children’s fashion.
