W

hen you’re sworn in to give testimony in court, you’re asked to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth under the glare of a judge, jury and assorted other people. That’s kind of intense when you think about it! You’re on the spot, potentially breaking a sweat and you’re in court to tell it like it is. But here at It’s A Kidworld Magazine, we look at the truth, the whole truth and nothing

but the truth from a slightly different bent and certainly with a less sweatinducing angle. Our truth is what’s happening in the industry…the good, the new and the exciting. So if you would please indulge us with a little bit of It’s A Kidsworld’s truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, you’ll get a chance to read about some very exciting retailers who have carved unique and exciting niche’s for themselves.

People might think Philadelphia is primarily known for the Liberty Bell, or Independence Hall, or the 76ers or even some killer cheesesteaks, but we know that’s not the sum total of the notables in the city. Karl’s for Kids, right in the heart of Center City, has been owned and operated by the Richman family for the last 85 years! Yes, you read that right…85 years! Equally impressive is the fact that they’ve been in the same building for 50 years. Yup, you read that correctly, too. Five. Zero. Fifty years! In today’s retailing environment, those are two similarly impressive achievements. The reasons for their incredible success and longevity is quite simple and almost poetic: they show as much of the beautiful merchandise as possible on their floor and in the showroom. They believe a store should be rich and inviting and filled with everything you might ever need to outfit that nursery just right, from furniture to clothing and everything in between. They’ve always believed that seeing an item is the best way to sell it. The visual sale is what distinguishes them from buying on the internet. And it’s not that they don’t believe there is some space for that type of sale. It’s just not the primary business model under which they operate. What’s worked for them and continues to allow them to be a leader in the industry is the concept of kicking the proverbial tires of car.

For something as life-changing as welcoming a bundle of joy into your life, Karl’s believes you shouldn’t have to be burdened with running from this store to that store to the other store to piece a nursery together. At Karl’s, everything is under one roof, which is how they can provide their customers with such extraordinary service. Add their extensive knowledge of the industry both for clothing and retail, it’s no wonder they’ve been around for as long as they have. When it comes to the furniture side of the business, Karl’s like to give the shopping public as much information as they can about what could be the furniture to last a child from birth through teens, from construction to materials to color choices. Gone are the days when a crib is just a crib. They want people to know that buying a crib means considering how this piece of furniture can evolve with the age of the child. Some of Karl’s stronger furniture vendors are Dolce Babi, who provide solidly crafted, innovative furniture that

focuses on safety, style and value, Romina Furniture, whose wood craftsmanship allows them to produce an extraordinary range of outstanding products in style and color and Heritage Baby Products, who carries collections distinguished by sophisticated styling and sturdy construction. From the perspective of clothing, Karl’s operates with the notion that layette to toddler is their sweet spot for their customers, though they do carry boys to size 20 and girls to size 14. They offer an old-school, but still very welcomed ability to choose a layette for a boy and for a girl, which is so unlike the big box stores. They also have an extensive collection of occasion wear for all size. And if you thought that was enough already, Karl’s also carries gear like Mima and Stokke strollers. With this volume and variety of products, you can’t help but appreciate how Karl’s works diligently to make the experience of having a baby as easy as possible.

You might think of South Hampton, New York as a trendy, summer-only kind of spot but that’s quite far from the truth. Take a look at a store like Bean 2 Tween, which opened 5 years ago, that carries infants, girls to size 16 and

boys to size 7. Though there is a component of the store’s business that seasonal, Bean 2 Tween has a solid market presence all year round. According to Jen Ginsberg, owner of this fabulous boutique, her goal is to make the store as welcoming a spot as possible, where kids come to meet, shop the hottest items and then walk into town. Jen’s selection of items for the store has to pass her feel-look test, which is something we love! She wants to make sure that the items she carries feel as good as possible, capture the essence of comfort and look as good as possible in every way, shape and form. She carries clothing that’s cool, but not too over the top, fashionable without being too mature, and fresh without being a flash-in-the-pan kind of look that will be in-style for all of 2 minutes. Another key to Jen’s on-going success is her use of social media. We as adults many think of Instagram as a kid-centric type of app but Bean 2 Tween has found an incredible way to leverage this social media. With over 2376 posts (and counting), Bean 2 Tween reminds followers regularly of their presence, style and relevance to the market space. Pink & Blues

Travelling down south and we mean to the south many think of as New York attached to the end of Georgia, we head to Florida, to the town of Plantation where the charming Pink & Blues can be found. Opened in 2010, Pink & Blues primarily focuses on the tween and junior markets with denim, t-shirts, loads of accessories and special occasion wear, which is a booming market. What Lisa Milgroom, owner of this hot spot, discovered through her years is that this clothing category was a seriously underserved market without variety and style. In the age of practically needing a bazillion dresses to make it through the Bar/Bat Mitzvah years, Pink & Blues created a shopping experience that was irresistible, satisfying to both the parent’s and daughter’s wishes! With an entire wall of special occasion dresses in the back of the store, Pink & Blues has cornered that market for many miles around with fit & flares, short skirts and very dressy Bima dresses. Personalized and initialed products are also a big niche for Lisa at Pink & Blues, from cosmetic and accessory bags to initialed leggings. Just like Bean 2 Tween, Pink & Blues has also done an outstanding job using social media to attract excitement and buzz. Posting at least once a day, P&B has attracted 2,493 followers on Instagram and counting. And they are using the technology in the way it was intended to be used. Their posts are thematic and fun and are so cute, with looping video and varied imagery. If we lived closer, we’d be there regularly. Who’d want to miss out on fun like that? Lisa says that many people come into the store with their phones and point to the

photo of the item they want. If that’s not ideal, we don’t know what is! Facebook is also used by Pink & Blues, though Lisa believes it skews more to the mothers. But it’s no worries for Lisa. The more exposure she gets via social media, the better.

Our last stop on this east coast tour is to Teen Angel in Del Ray Beach and Parkland, Florida. Opened over 20 years ago, Teen Angel has over 15 employees for 2 stores, which means their motto is very simple. Customer Service is King. The store’s employees know all of the pieces from the stores and can find just the right item to complete a perfect outfit. When asked the ideal market for these stores, we were told the 7–16, pre-teen, junior and contemporary adult markets are their sweet spot. Within those market spaces, they focus on special occasion wear to sportswear, and everything in between. Each of the stores have over 3,000 square feet of space and that means they can stock the store with depth in variety and style in an unparalleled way. Because of this unique approach, this store has developed an extremely loyal following. A recent example of that loyalty is when one of their long-time customers who recently got engaged to be married and had been shopping their since she was 8 years old, one of her first stops was to Teen Angel to share the exciting news! Now that’s a loyal customer and such a sweet story!

Teen Angel is another store maximizing their reach with social media. With Instagram as their primary vehicle for that outreach, they currently have over 3,970 followers! All we can say is WOW! They post something at least once a day and rotate between product shots, store interior shots and other fun information. Another thing they’ve found to be amazing is that people fly into a local executive airport JUST to shop at one of their locations based on their Insta posts. Insane, right? Teen Angel also uses Facebook, which they’ve found appeals more to the teen’s mothers. But since they’re the ones with the cash flow, Teen Angel knows it’s time and social-media effort well spent. Brands that are hot with Teen Angel: Blank NYC, So Nikki, LA Made Clothing, Butterflies and Zebras, Sally Miller, and DL1961 to name a few.

So there you have it. The truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth according to It’s A Kidsworld. We know these stores have given you much to think about, particularly in how to duplicate their successes by using social media arena. Your bottom line will thank you as will, as will your customers!

Hey guys its Shayna here! I am so excited to have interviewed a beautiful teen all the way from Michigan! Courtney Newman, a girl who has amazing style and loves fashion. A trendsetter at her school who loves to feel confident in her clothing; she loves to make sure her appearance is the best it can be. She tells us that its ok to express yourself through your clothing and to show your true style, no matter what anyone says. She knows the “koolest” trends and she knows what’s in style and what’s not. She stays in the loop with all the new trends, reads fashion magazines and follows numerous fashionistas. Her love for fashion is beyond amazing and no matter what anybody says she will always express herself through her clothing. She shows off an incredible attitude towards fashion and thinks everyone should be able to show their true self through the clothing they wear. 1. Would you prefer to wear summer outfits or winter outfits? Winter outfits because I love jeans and sweaters! 2. For school how long does it take you to plan your outfits? I think about it before I go to bed and then when I wake up I sometimes will want to wear the same outfit but other times I will spend 15 minutes looking at my closet in the morning.

3. What and who is your inspiration for your style? I follow a blogger named Arielle Charnas whose instagram is @somethingnavy and she’s been my fashion inspiration ever since I found her blog and instagram account. 4. Do you read or watch anything fashion related to know what is in style? I have a monthly subscription to Vogue that I look forward to.


“Style is being confident in what you wear!” 5. Are you a trendsetter? I would like to think so! At my school I generally try and look good for school while some other people usually only go for comfort. Looking good makes you feel good so that’s what I always aim to do! 6. Do you wear jewelry with your any or all your outfits? I always wear my two necklaces. One is a gold monogram necklace and the other is a moonstone necklace that I never take off. 7. What is your favorite store to shop at and why? I love shopping at Aritzia because they have everything there! 8. How often do you go shopping? I shop probably 1-2 times a month. 9. How would you describe your style? I would describe my style as trendy! 10. Do your shoes determine your outfit choice or do you plan your outfits and chose the shoes later? It depends. Typically I know what shoes I want to wear and I style around them. 11. Do any of your friends inspire you for your fashion choices? Not usually. I like to have my own style but I like to shop with other people and get their opinions on fits. 12. Do you have a special outfit that you like to wear all the time? I’ve always had an obsession with shoes (because what girl doesn’t) and a special outfit to me is wearing a brand new pair of cool shoes to school or out for the first time!

13. Does your outfits change from the weekends to the weekdays? I do a lot of school work on the weekends so I tend to be a little bit comfier, but if I’m going out with friends I tend to wear similar things. 14. When you go out do you wear nicer clothing and true harder with your outfit choices or do you just throw on whatever you see? I try a little harder because I have a reason to look really good and its fun dressing up! 15. What is your go to outfit? Jeans and a t-shirt! 16. What stores do you shop at? Aritzia, Madewell, Guys N’ Gals (a Michigan boutique), Neiman Marcus, and I order a lot of stuff online off of Rag and Bone and other stores like that, that aren’t in Michigan. 17. Have you ever been to a fashion show before? No but I want to! 18. Has your style changed increasingly over the years? Now I tend to try a little bit harder in my outfits because I care about my appearance whereas 3/4 years ago I didn’t care as much.

19. Do you like to wear only name-brand clothing or will you wear anything? I will wear anything but I’m all for quality over quantity. 20. Do you think the new trends differ from up North to the East Coast? I think there are a few trends that might differ but as a whole its pretty much the same. 21. What is the trendiest style right now? Bombers, and tracksuits are making a comeback! Who thought Juicy Couture would reach Bloomingdales again!? 22. What advice can you give other stylish people like you? Style is being confident in what you wear! Don’t worry about what other people think about you. If you rock it and you wear it well then go for it! People talk out of jealously…
