Dix Street School Dix Street Elementary Junior Lego Robotics
1st Grade
2nd Grade
3rd Grade
(Otsego) The Otsego Public Schools Science Technology Engineering Art and Math (STEAM) program held the Junior Lego after-school program, for 1st-3rd graders. Dix Street had more than 50 participants who built a Lego car to race down a ramp. Although there were guidelines, the students had the freedom to add their own pieces and parts to see how different elements would impact the vehicle’s performance. Each week, there’s a new twist to the “build” that shows students different sources of power and speed. The winning students in each grade received a “medal” and everyone had a great time designing and building their car!
St. Therese Elementary Students Win Honors, Invited To Attend Federal Reserve Banquet (Wayland) –3 students comprised one team in St. Therese School's annual participation in THE STOCK MARKET GAME. Teams are given a set amount of "funds" for a given period each fall. All teams are given the same amount of (imaginary) money to play the market on line. At the end of the game, the team that has made the most profit wins. This year, Haley, Zhanae and Mark won the regional honors and were invited to the annual banquet held at the Michigan branch of the Federal Reserve on May 11. (Unfortunately, they will be unable to attend as they will be away at science camp! Oh, the busy life of a 6th grader!) Teacher Hank Leverette has run the program for his classes for several years. Students enjoy the learning process as well as the competition. Money management and investment confidence are important life skills that are promoted throughout the program. One young St. Therese alumnus now earns his living by dealing and trading from home!
Student Hold Popcorn Sale In Support of Allegan County Sheriff’s Deputy, Brian Augustine St. Therese School 5th and 6th graders recently sponsored a popcorn sale in support of an Allegan County Sheriff's Deputy, Brian Augustine. 6th graders Leah Damveld and Bella Harnish spearheaded the program after Leah's dad, Allegan County Sheriff Deputy John Paul Damveld, shared that Deputy Augustine had recently been diagnosed colon cancer. The girls wanted to do something to support his family and make life a little easier during this difficult time. Leah arranged to have wrist bands printed for sale reading "BATTLE FOR BUTTER", Butter being a nickname Augustine had earlier received from his friends. The school popcorn sale was supported by St. Therese students and staff and members of the sheriff's department as well as local law enforcement agencies. Leah and Bella delivered the check to Deputy Augustine. (Bella on left, Leah on right.) Picutred in front of the school sign are Sgt. Brett Ensfield. Deputy John paul Damveld and Deputy Mike Hoffman. “There’s No Place Like Home” Do you enjoy sleepovers? What about summer camp? It’s fun to hang out with friends or have a new adventure. For some kids though, this can be a scary experience. Kids want to go and have fun with friends, but once there, they miss their own bed, parents and everything that’s a part of their home. It’s called being “homesick.” Homesickness is not a sickness like the flu or a cold. It means someone is upset, sad, scared, has a headache or stomach ache, or is just miserable. If you’ve been homesick and had to leave an event early, it’s alright. A lot of people get homesick even grown-ups. But there are some things you can do to make yourself feel less homesick, so you can stay at the sleepover or camp and enjoy your time away from home. ► Make friends at camp. Many kids are all feeling the same way you are at first. They need to meet someone to have fun with also.
Share your thoughts. Change your life.

► Keep busy. The more you do, the less time you’ll have to feel homesick. Even if you’re not completely into what you’re doing at first, you may soon start to have a good time. When you’re doing something fun, you’re not thinking about home. ► Bring a few familiar things with you. If you’re going to camp, take your pillow, bring pictures of your family or pet, or take your favorite blanket with you. Having familiar things with you is a great comfort. ► Keep in touch. If you’re going overnight to a sleepover, plan to make a phone call to your parents that evening and then again in the morning when you’re ready to be picked up. If you’re going to camp, plan to write letters, emails or text messages to stay in touch. ► Be positive. Look at the bright side of being at camp! There are so many things to do that you don’t get to do at home. Make up your mind to enjoy these experiences while you’re there. ► Talk to a camp counselor. If you’re away at camp, talk to a camp counselor if you start to feel uncomfortable. He or she may have more ideas to help you feel better. Your counselor may even be able to match you up with other campers who are feeling the same way so that you can begin to have fun together!

Coloring Corner It’s Father’s Day On June 19! Footprints "Walk a little slower, Daddy," said a child so small. "I'm following in your footsteps and I don't want to fall. Sometimes your steps are very fast, Sometimes they're hard to see; So walk a little slower, Daddy, For you are leading me. Someday when I'm all grown up, You're what I want to be; Then I will have a little child Who'll want to follow me. And I would want to lead just right, And know that I was true; So, walk a little slower, Daddy, For I must follow you." ~ Author Unknown

Richard M. Nixon 37th President of United States, 1969-1974 Richard Milhous Nixon was born on January 9, 1913 in Yorba LInda, California. He grew up very poor. Nixon attended public schools and graduated in 1930. He went to college at Whittier College and Duke University Law School before beginning the practice of law. In 1940, he married Patricia Ryan and they had two daughters, Patricia and Julie. During World War II, Nixon served as a Navy lieutenant commander in the Pacific. On leaving the service, he was elected to Congress from his California district. In 1950, he won a Senate seat. Two years later, General Eisenhower selected Nixon, at age 39, to be his running mate in the presidential race. Nixon, a republican, was elected Vice President. He ran for President in 1960 but lost to John F. Kennedy. Then in 1968, he was elected President. His accomplishments while in office included revenue sharing, the end of the draft, new anti-crime laws, and a broad environmental program. The Environmental Protection Agency was created in 1970. As he had promised, he appointed Justices of conservative philosophy to the Supreme Court. One of the highlights of his first term as president occurred in 1969, when American astronauts from Apollo 11 made the first moon landing. Some of his most important achievements came in his quest for world stability. His summit meetings with Russian leader Leonid Brezhnev produced a treaty to limit strategic nuclear weapons. In January 1973, he announced an agreement with North Viet Nam to end American involvement in Indochina. In 1974, his Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, negotiated disengagement agreements between Israel and its opponents, Egypt and Syria. But the Watergate scandal brought divisions to the country and led to his resignation. When Nixon ran for reelection in 1972, it was discovered that five people from the Committee to Reelect the President had broken into the Democratic National Headquarters at the Watergate business complex. Two reporters for the Washington Post, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, uncova massive Nixon joins Presidents Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford, and ered cover-up of the Jimmy Carter at the White House, 1981

break-in. President Nixon had installed a taping system and when the Senate asked for tapes recorded during his time in office he refused to hand them over due to executive privilege. The Supreme Court did not agree with him and he was forced to give them up. The tapes showed that while Nixon was not involved in the break-in he was involved in its coverup. Faced with almost certain impeachment, Nixon announced on August 8, 1974, that he would resign the next day to begin "that process of healing which is so desperately needed in America." He retired to San Clemente, California. In 1974, Nixon was pardoned by President Ford. In his last years, Nixon gained praise as a statesman and took many foreign trips. He had authored many books on his experiences in public life and on foreign policy. Nixon suffered a stroke on April 18, 1994, and died four days later at the age of 81.

Tennis originated from a French game in the 12th century called paume (meaning palm). It was a court game where the ball was struck with the hand. Later it became jeu de paume and racquets were used. The game to evolve in Europe. In 1873, Major Walter Wingfield invented a game named Sphairistike. From this game, modern tennis had its beginning. Today, tennis is played both outdoors and indoors with racquets and balls. It can be played with two or four people, on a court of grass, clay, concrete, artificial turf, or wood. It is one of the world’s most popular sports by players of all ages. It is also a favorite spectator sport with star players, tournaments on television and as an Olympic sport. Tennis is a year round activity and a great total body workout. Not only does it help build hand/eye coordination, it helps players learn sportsmanship. Tennis looks easy, but the game takes a lot of practice to become great! The United States Tennis Association has modified the game, the equipment and the court to help the 10 and under crowd learn easier and enjoy it more! This program is called the U.S.T.A. QuickStart. In tennis, opposing players, each holding a racquet, hit a ball back and forth over a net.
