,W·V $ *UHDW 'D\ $W .LGV· :RUOG 1HZV Hi Everyone, I’ve been making classroom quizzes for the Kids’ World News for about 7 years now initially as a teacher for an academic segment during guided reading for the students not in the group. It has become something I do now to assist teachers in the same way even though I am retired. The Kids’ World News is delivered free to each school and public library at the beginning of each month. Most teachers are aware of it in the school but most teachers are not aware of the quizzes. I wanted to make sure it is on your radar. With MSTEP coming up as well as continued guided reading and independent work, this is a great way to engage students in real-life activity. The content of the paper is cross curricular with social studies, science and math being prominent. The connection to these quizzes is at https://www.kidsworldnews.org/quizzes. Current editions are also available online for viewing. Please feel free to share this FREE resource with other educators in the area. Dave Brigham Retired classroom teacher
If you would like to see Kids’ World News at your school or if you would like to be one of our proud sponsors, please call 517-285-6641 (e-mail: pat@kidsworldnews.org). If you would like to submit an article from your school (limit 150 words), e-mail: charles@kidsworldnews.net. Kids’ World News is designed to give exposure to all area schools, recognition of students and staff members. We welcome input from all our area schools. We do however, reserve the right to edit.

Our Holy Spirit Catholic School Teachers sponsored “Donuts with Dad’s this past March. This event provided an occasion for young students to share some special time with a parent or another adult important in their lives. Students also presented a special craft to their loved ones. It also provided the perfect chance for everyone to catch up with each other before school while enjoying fresh donuts and coffee. This was a morning cherished by all! There was no need to pack a lunch on this special day! The students at Holy Spirit enjoyed a delicious pasta lunch in honor of St. Joseph’s Feast Day. The entire school dined together and celebrated! Students were also sent home with a St. Joseph prayer card and candle to share with family that evening.

New Covenant Christian School celebrated National Reading Month in March by inviting Dr. Seuss into our classrooms through his many books. The Cat in the Hat came to read to us and the students had fun dressing up as some of the characters from Dr. Seuss’s books. We also enjoyed having the Jr. High students come to read to the elementary classes as well as challenging each student to read on their own. It was awesome to see so much participation from the students. To end the month, we watched a Dr. Seuss movie and ate popcorn. What a wonderful month we had!

Have Fun Learning Golf! Playing golf is a great way to stay healthy, get some exercise, enjoy the outdoors, spend time with your family, and have fun all at the same time! Golf is not an easy game to master, but children are never too young to begin playing. The earlier you start there is a better chance that bad habits will not develop. Learning golf the proper way, not only leads to better play but a more enjoyable experience. It’s good idea is to take some lessons. Many golf courses offer instruction for kids. Also, some driving ranges will have a professional on staff that will give lessons for children. For older children, golf is a recognized sport in school and many high schools have golf teams. Learning the basics of golfing includes having a good grip, the importance of alignment, good posture and the rules of golf itself. Golf takes a lot of dedication and practice to continue to improve your game.
Golf Facts ► The first game of golf was played at Bruntsfield links in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1456 AD. ► Golf is played within the area of land that is designated by a golf course. The course is between 5000 to 7000 yards in length. ► Each hole has a guideline for how many times it should take a golfer to hit the ball (known as stroke) to get it in the hole. This is called par. At the end of the course, golfers compare their scores on each hole. ► Players carry many types of golf clubs during the game. There are three types of clubs that are called

Fifth Graders Are Prepared for Emergencies
Doyle Dingman Associate Broker / Auctioneer
Fifth graders at St. Mary Catholic School have just become better prepared to weather a disaster or emergency, thanks to Jennifer Kramer, Preparedness Specialist at Livingston County Health Department’s Medical Reserve Corps. In February, Kramer taught students “LivReady, an emergency preparedness training program. The training is designed to teach kids the basics of emergency preparedness with the hopes that they will go home and teach mom and dad.

It was important to Principal Veronica Kinsey to make time for the LivReady training. “St. Mary has put a big emphasis on the health and safety of our students and their families,â€? Mrs. Kinsey said. “We participate in Project Healthy Schools and just made a number of school safety improvements. LivReady really complements our efforts.â€? Kids and families often take their preparedness a step further at home and add to their preparedness capabilities after having participated in the program.

Compliments of D r. H a n k Vaupel
Early Pre-K students at Greater Lansing Islamic School explored the colorful world around them. They learned about the primary colors through various fun activities, especially focusing on mixing colors to form a new color. The children enjoyed watching a primary color video, which had helpful visuals and auditorial. Some other activities were creating color tablets and color mixing glasses. This was a fun and hands on way to learn!

Do You Have Food Allergies? Lots of kids have food allergies! Some are allergic to seafood, milk, eggs, wheat, soy, peanuts - just to name a few. So, they have to watch what they eat at all times. No cheating either! Everyone has an immune system. That is what protects you from germs and diseases. Your immune system makes antibodies that help you fight off bacteria, viruses and other organisms that can make you sick. If you have a food allergy, it means your immune system mistakenly treats something in a food as if it’s dangerous to you! Your immune system releases “mast” cells to release chemicals in your bloodstream. One of these chemicals is called histamine. Histamine causes symptoms that affect your throat, respiratory system, skin, digestive system, eyes and nose. A food allergy can either react right away or wait a few hours. Some of the signs are tightness in the throat, hoarseness, wheezing, nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting, hives, tingling in the tongue or lips, rach or runny nose. In the worst of cases, the tongue could swell, blood pressure can drop, breathing tubes can narrow, it affects the heart, the blood vessels and more. Children at risk for this kind of reaction have to be very careful. If you think you may have an allergy to a certain food, talk to your parents. They will take you to the doctor to get it checked out. There are special doctors that are called allergists whom your family doctor may send you to. The allergy specialist will ask you questions about your problem and also ask about anyone else in your family who may have allergies, eczema or asthma. The allergist may also want to do a skin test to see how your body reacts to a very small amount of the food that is troubling you. The doctor will use a liquid extract of the food. They also may want to test you for other common allergy-causing foods to see if you react to them. Do NOT try this at home. It’s best
to do this at the doctor’s office because they have medicines to use if you have a reaction to the tests. Some allergists will take a blood sample (a RAST test) and send it to the lab mixed with some of the food you may be allergic to. There is no special medicine you can take for a food allergy. Some allergies can be outgrown and others you can have the rest of your life. The best way to deal with it is to AVOID eating what bothers you and READ the package labels to make sure the food is not part of the ingredients. Plus ALWAYS HAVE AN EMERGENCY PLAN with your doctor and parents if you have an accident. In some cases, you may be prescribed an epinephrine autoinjection devise like an EpiPen and should wear a medical alert bracelet to notify others of your allergy.
